    “Four civilians and a soldier have been killed as India and Pakistan continued to exchange fire in the disputed Kashmir region, officials say. A Pakistani military statement said the civilians have been killed in firing by Indian forces near the city of Sialkot since Sunday. India said one of its soldiers was killed in firing by Pakistani forces in the Samba area on Monday. Hostilities between the neighbours have escalated in the past year.

    Last week, Indian forces in Kashmir killed four Pakistani troops on the border after an Indian soldier was killed in an attack blamed on Pakistan. Pakistan said it had lodged a protest with the Indian high commissioner in Islamabad. A ceasefire agreed in 2003 remains in place, but it is often violated.

    In October, 16 people – nine Pakistanis and seven Indians – died when the two sides exchanged fire for several days. The two sides often blame each other for firing and shelling in the disputed region. A Pakistani military statement said four Pakistani civilians, including a woman and a teenage boy, had been killed since Sunday in “unprovoked firing and shelling” by Indian troops in the recent exchange of fire on the border. The statement said that Pakistani soldiers were “effectively responding to India’s [unprovoked] firing”.

    India’s government has not yet reacted to the Pakistani allegations. Earlier on Monday, an Indian soldier was killed in a clash in the Samba area, some 350km (217 miles) from Srinagar, the main city of Indian-administered Kashmir, officials said…”

The actual interview is slow going, I couldn’t listen to all of it, but the host’s introduction, the first 4 minutes, is refreshing. Nice to see Swedes fighting back. But dry, dry irony!

    “Thousands of Indians have fled from their homes as fighting between India and Pakistan spread along a 200-km (124 mile) stretch of the border in the disputed region of Kashmir. Tension between the nuclear-armed rivals has risen since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called off peace talks in August and clashes along stretches of their border have been erupting intermittently since October.

    At least 10 Indian and Pakistani soldiers and civilians have been killed in fighting over the past week. About 6,000 civilians in Indian-controlled Kashmir fled from their homes late on Monday as fighting moved to civilian areas, said Shantmanu, the divisional commissioner of Jammu region. About 4,000 left after fighting began last week.

    “We had a narrow escape and there is a war-like situation,” Sham Kumar, 54, from Sherpur village told Reuters. “Pakistani troops are using long-range weapons. It is the first time we have seen such intense shelling.” The violence comes days before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is due to visit India. President Barack Obama is also due to visit India later this month…”

  8. Reuters -Prominent Germans condemn anti-Muslim rallies

    Top-selling German tabloid Bild and 50 prominent Germans called on Tuesday for an end to what they see as rising xenophobia, a day after thousands of protesters in several German cities rallied against Muslim immigration.

    Monday’s rallies, organised by a new grassroots movement called PEGIDA, or Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West, have become a weekly event in the eastern city of Dresden.

    Some 18,000 people, the biggest number so far, turned out in Dresden but similar rallies in Berlin and the western city of Cologne were heavily outnumbered by counter-protesters who accuse PEGIDA of fanning racism and intolerance.

    Bild published a ‘No to PEGIDA’ appeal on Tuesday, covering the front page and a double page spread on page 2 and 3 with quotes from the 50 politicians and celebrities.

    “(They) are saying ‘no’ to xenophobia and ‘yes’ to diversity and tolerance,” Bild’s deputy editor, Bela Anda, wrote in a commentary. “We should not hand over our streets to hollow rallying cries.”

    In Dresden, the PEGIDA protesters waved Germany’s black, red and gold flag and brandished posters bearing slogans such as “Against religious fanaticism and every kind of radicalism”.

    One poster in Cologne called for “potatoes rather than doner kebabs”, a swipe at ethnic Turks who at around three million represent Germany’s largest immigrant community.

    Germany has some of the world’s most liberal asylum rules, partly due to its Nazi past. The number of asylum seekers arriving in Germany, many from the Middle East, jumped to around 200,000 last year — four times as many as in 2012.

    German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Germans to shun the anti-Muslim protesters, saying their hearts are full of hatred and argued that hostility towards foreigners has no place in Germany..

    In Cologne, home to a large Muslim population, there were 10 times as many counter-demonstrators as PEGIDA protesters. In similarly multi-ethnic Berlin, some 5,000 counter-demonstrators swamped around 400 anti-Muslim protesters, local police said.

    Cologne Cathedral and Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate switched off their lights to protest against the rallies.

    PEGIDA has nonetheless shaken Germany’s political establishment which some say could help the Eurosceptic party Alternative for Germany (AfD). But the AfD, dogged by internal power struggle, is split over how to deal with the movement.

    Bild’s campaign drew current and former politicians, celebrities and businessmen.

    “(PEGIDA) appeals to hollow prejudices, xenophobia and intolerance,” wrote former Social Democrat Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. “A look at our past and economic sense tells us Germany should not spurn refugees and asylum seekers,” he added.

    Others included Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, rock star Udo Lindenberg, 76-year old pop star Heino and former German soccer captain Oliver Bierhoff.

  9. TURKEY – ISTANBUL – Female suicide bomber attacks Istanbul police station -governor

    Jan 6 (Reuters) – A female suicide bomber entered a police station and blew herself up in Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet district on Tuesday, injuring two police officers, one of them seriously, the city’s governor said.

    The woman spoke English after entering the police station but her nationality and identity were unknown, Vasip Sahin told reporters at the scene.

  10. DAILY MAIL – Isis fighters ‘high on cocaine’: Huge bag of drugs found at home of Islamic State leader accused of drugging troops to boost morale

    Discovery suggests widespread drug-use within Islamic State ranks

    Kurdish fighters uncovered a bag of cocaine at the home of IS leader, Emir Abu Zahra, after killing him in a military operation deep inside the war-torn city of Kobane in Syria.

    The discovery in the Botan neighbourhood suggests widespread drug use within ISIS which is very much against the doctrines and principles of Islam.

    They believe Zahra distributed the drug among his fighters to boost morale –

    Despite the image they portray, there have been constant rumours of drug use within Islamic State ranks.

    The group’s leaders are believed to drug their fighters so they fight more bravely, although their enemies suggest this inspires reckless and ineffective attacks.

    Kurdish fighters have reportedly found mysterious pills, capsules and syringes on both dead and alive IS fighters.
