Ottawa: Three politicians take a brave and principled stand with the Jewish people

Please read the story details and the the contrasting choice the Mayor of Calgary took. One paragraph is below:

[…] In sharp contrast to Calgary’s stance, Ottawa hosted a similar ceremony on December 10th in Westboro. The event was notable for the participation of the Mayor, who not only appeared and spoke but also lit the first candle alongside a federal MP and a municipal councillor representing the ward where the ceremony took place. […]

Ottawa Mayor speaks at event and lights one candle:

Federal MP, Yasir Naqvi addressed the issue of antisemitism in Ottawa:

City Councillor Jeff Leiper:

Normally, a politician doing what appears to be pandering to a demographic would not be interesting. But in this case, it shows an actual value. A position. And one which in terms of absolute numbers and imputed views of a group, reflects one person as opposed to ten for each with values that are hostile to the very existence of Jewish people. And that is just the Muslims, not even considering the socialists/communists who view Jews as a group which will not be easily destroyed as an identify, and worse, seen as quintessentially middle class. Kulaks.

So for these politicians to both participate, and say what they said was meaningful. There was likely personal risk in it for them. And one can’t help but wonder if their more practical advisors suggested they not do this.

So suddenly, this is something that is interesting to a news site.

    • Not agreeing with the principles does not make it an unprincipled stance. Just a principled one you do not like. Which is fair enough.
