Muslim scholars pride themselves on the “fact” the Qur’an is supposed to be an unadulterated book straight from the “Prophets” mouth (He was illiterate) and “pure” in their translations through the ages, so even the Qur’an that CAIR will send to people free of charge is filled with the verses of intolerance, hate, and Jihad. Given this, it is indeed strange that there are a dozen or so translations into English and none of them read the same as any other.
This Muslim narrative is to be found in a Hadith from Sahih Bukhari Volume 6, Book 61, Number 510
(According to the Koran and the stated beliefs of Islam, the Koran is an unedited and unchanged, single source manuscript, told to the illiterate Mohammad over his adult lifetime by the Angel Gabriel (Jibral). Supposedly unlike the Books of the Holy Bible and the Torah which were written over many centuries by many different authors.)
After the death of Mohamad, there were different opinions as who was to lead the Muslims, they developed into the beginnings of the many different sects and varying ‘schools of thought’ in the practice of Islam. As early as the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan the many different sects of Islam had differing versions of the Koran.
Uthman is perhaps best known for forming the committee which produced multiple copies of the text of the Qur’an as it exists today. The reason was that various Muslim centers, like Kufa and Damascus, had begun to develop their own traditions for reciting the Qur’an and writing it down with stylistic differences.
This copy of the Qur’an is believed to be one of the oldest, compiled during the Caliph Uthman’s reign.
During the time of Uthman, by which time Islam had spread far and wide, the differences in reading the Quran in different dialects of Arabic language became obvious. A group of companions, headed by Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, who was then stationed in Iraq, came to Uthman and urged him to “Save the Muslim Ummah before they differ about the Quran.” Uthman obtained the complete manuscript of the Qur’an from Hafsah, one of the wives of the Islamic prophet Muhammad who had been entrusted to keep the manuscript ever since the Qur’an was comprehensively compiled by the first Caliph, Abu Bakr. Uthman then again summoned the leading compiling authority, Zayd ibn Thabit, and some other companions to make copies of the manuscript. Zayd was put in charge of the task. The style of Arabic dialect used was that of the Quraysh tribe to which the Prophet Muhammad belonged. Hence this style was emphasized over all others.
Zayd and his assistants produced several copies of the manuscript of the Qur’an. One of each was sent to every Muslim province with the order that all other Quranic materials, whether fragmentary or complete copies, be destroyed. As such, when the standard copies were made widely available to the Muslim community everywhere, then all other material was burnt voluntarily by the Muslim community themselves. The annihilation of these extra-Qur’anic documents remained essential in order to eradicate scriptural incongruities, contradictions of consequence or differences in the dialect from the customary text of the Qur’an. The Caliph Uthman kept a copy for himself and returned the original manuscript to Hafsah.
While Shi’a and Sunni accept the same sacred text, the Qur’an, some claim that Shi’a dispute the current version, i.e. they add two additional Surahs known as “al-Nurayn” and “al-Wilaya”. Nonetheless, Shi’ites claim that they are falsely accused of this, as they believe, like the Sunnis, that the Qur’an has never been changed and it is with reference from Sunni hadith books that this inference is drawn not only by uninformed Shi’as but Sunnis too.
People have been burning the Quran since the early days of Islam, but they haven’t always been its “enemies”.
The third caliph, Uthman, became famous, or rather infamous, for Quran burning. Distressing reports had filtered to him from battlefield generals who were fighting against the Armenians and other nations on the edge of his burgeoning Islamic empire: different versions of the Quran were overheard being recited.
Caliph Uthman had a bold idea. He created a new edition of the Quran and demanded that all other editions be surrendered and burnt. Not everyone liked this. After all, Uthman was not one of the four people Prophet Muhammad had said Muslims could trust to issue the Quran. Ibn Mas’ud, on the other hand, was. He refused point-blank to surrender his collection of the Quran, which he claimed he got directly from Muhammad.
Ali, the one who was “Prophet” Mohammed’s son-in-law and the soon-to-be fourth caliph, at first refused to surrender his Quran to the flames. He finally gave in under pressure, but he was not at all pleased.
Some claim Ali’s displeasure led him to participate in the assassination of Uthman — staged while Uthman was reading his new version of the Quran. One report has the assassins dramatically screaming, “You changed Allah’s Quran!” as they plunged knives into the fading Caliph’s body. Ali’s followers, who became the Shi’ites, to this day feel that Uthman tampered with the Quran to deprive Ali’s family of the hereditary right to lead Islam.
Caliph Uthman’s bonfires dealt a severe blow to the prohibition of textual criticism of the Quran. Fortunately, some hidden pre-Uthmanic manuscripts survived to this day and have slowly come to light, although access to them has been limited: their very existence goes against the Muslim’s “party line” that the Quran has never been changed. We know that Ibn Mas’ud’s version was different from the modern Quran. For example, it did not include the important first Sura, known as the “Fatiha.”
Ali, Mohammad’s son-in-law, and fourth Caliph assassinate Uthman, the reigning Caliph, screaming that Uthman changed the text of the Qu’ran, further dividing Muslims into Shi’a, Ali’s followers, and Sunni and they have been bitter enemies ever since.
