Reader’s Links for July 14, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

‘Every officer is up to speed on diversity training. Not so much ship handling’: Scathing official report finds US Navy is too woke for war because of risk averse, politically correct, control-freak top brass
Members of Congress commissioned the report on issues in the surface Navy
Came in response to fire on ship in San Diego and two ship collisions in Pacific
Retired Marine general and Navy admiral spoke with current and former officers
They identified a number of disturbing trends in Navy leadership and training
Many officers said that diversity training took precedence over warfighting
They claimed combat readiness had become a ‘box-checking’ exercise

A scathing new report commissioned by members of Congress has claimed that the Navy’s surface warfare forces have systemic training and leadership issues, including a focus on diversity that overshadows basic readiness skills.

The report prepared by Marine Lt. Gen. Robert Schmidle and Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery, both retired, came in response to recent Naval disasters, including the burning of the USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego, two collisions involving Navy ships in the Pacific and the surrender of two small craft to Iran.

The authors conducted hour-long interviews with 77 current and retired Navy officers, offering them anonymity to identify issues they wouldn’t feel comfortable raising in the chain of command.

The report found that a staggering 94 percent of the subjects believed the recent Naval disasters were ‘part of a broader problem in Navy culture or leadership.’

‘I guarantee you every unit in the Navy is up to speed on their diversity training. I’m sorry that I can’t say the same of their ship handling training,’ said one recently retired senior enlisted leader.

When reports began cropping up on social media on Tuesday that a mural of George Floyd had collapsed, it wasn’t immediately clear what had happened.

The mural was the work of artist David Ross, completed in July 2020 in a neighborhood in north Toledo, Ohio.

Ross, according to WTOL 11, had said “the artwork stands as a memorial and reminder to never forget what happened that day in May of 2020.”

It was painted on an aging brick building at Summit and Lagrange Streets, and initial photos showed the bricks collapsed into a pile at the side of the building. Some commentators suggested the old brick façade had simply toppled from bowing further outward over time.

Eh? According to Politico, “Biden allied groups, including the Democratic National Committee, are … planning to engage fact-checkers more aggressively and work with SMS carriers to dispel misinformation about vaccines that is sent over social media and text messages.” (H/t: New York Post)

The Politico report sheds no light on how exactly Biden-allied groups and/or fact-checkers would “work with SMS carriers” to “dispel misinformation.”

But SMS carriers, unlike social media, are not currently curating or claiming editorial prerogatives over users’ communications in any way. Their basis of operation fits the definition of a utility: they’re a paid service and users text what they want.

The examples used by Politico to illustrate “misinformation” are texts sent by a group affiliated with Turning Point USA, the organization led by Charlie Kirk. In what way do the Biden-allied groups propose to intervene to “dispel misinformation” sent in a text message? Politico doesn’t say.

  5. Afghan Withdrawal Opens the Way for China

China, which shares a tiny 47-mile-long border with Afghanistan, has long coveted developing closer ties with Kabul, not least because of the large, untapped reserves of mineral wealth that Afghanistan possesses. The indecent haste with which the Biden administration has undertaken its military withdrawal from Afghanistan not only raises the prospect of handing control of the country over to the hardline Islamist Taliban movement. It also presents China with a golden opportunity to extend its influence over this strategically important Central Asian country.

  6. Trump Releases Letter From Ex-US Attorney Alleging Barr Pressured Him Not to Probe Voter Fraud Claims

Former President Donald Trump on Monday released a letter he received from a former federal prosecutor in Pennsylvania last month outlining how the attorney was allegedly pressured by former Attorney General William Barr against investigating claims of voter fraud and election irregularities in the state.

William M. McSwain, who served as the chief federal law enforcement officer in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from April 2018 to January 2021, addressed a letter (pdf) to Trump on June 9 outlining his allegations.

The former president said in a statement releasing the letter: “U.S. Attorney from the Eastern District of Pennsylvania was precluded from investigating election fraud allegations. Outrageous!”

McSwain expressed in his letter to Trump his discontent with the instructions he said he received from Barr following the November 2020 presidential election.

  7. Herd Immunity to Herd Mentality
    Paul Kengor
    11-14 minutes

When my family and I contracted COVID last November and December, we sighed that at least we wouldn’t need to get vaccinated. We need not worry about investigating which of the experimental vaccines we might reluctantly consider injecting into our bodies, especially the non-conventional mRNA-based vaccines (i.e., Pfizer and Moderna), which are quite new and quite concerning. But hey, at least we were contributing to the herd immunity that the nation and world were eagerly racing toward. (Yes, you can thank us for our suffering.)

Indeed, recall the goal: If Americans could achieve the right combination of people who had been infected with COVID and survived it — i.e., herd immunity — and people protected from the virus through artificial vaccine-induced immunity, we would be all set, perhaps by the summer of 2021. That was where the nation stood.

Healthcare workers and community leaders in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina have started a new campaign called “doses to doors”.

    10-13 minutes

Law enforcement is a state right.

Our founders knew that concentrating too much power in any one federal agency – especially a law enforcement agency – could lead to a tyrannical police state. It was one of their greatest fears. After all, they knew a thing or two about tyranny, and it was something they wanted to avoid at all costs.

As a result, today’s federal law enforcement agencies have very limited authority and very specific missions: Border Patrol patrols the borders, of course; DEA investigates narcotics; and the ATF enforces archaic alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives laws.

The FBI has by far the broadest powers, but it too is constrained by a very specific set or rules and guidelines from the U.S. Attorney General – a process called predication. Contrary to what’s depicted on television, before FBI special agents can swoop in and take over a case, they must first have a federal predicate – they must believe that a federal crime or national security threat exists before they can investigate.

  16. China Threatens Nuclear War if U.S. Continues Investigating COVID-19 Origins

What is it Beijing’s leaders fear?
Wed Jul 14, 2021 Michael Ledeen

The Chinese are warning about an impending nuclear war if the United States does not cease its investigation into the origins of the COVID pandemic. They warn that the Americans must call off their probe into the sources of the disease — a warning which has prompted many American analysts to conclude that the leaders in Beijing fear discovery of the truth: that they — the Chinese Communists — are the source of the pandemic.

The Chinese Communists have long experimented with bioweapons, and have apparently continued the nasty habit, both recruiting Western scientists and putting them to work on Chinese projects, and smuggling Westerners into projects within China itself. One of the world’s top China experts, British citizen Roger Garside, foresees a mounting crisis, since Beijing will have to confront a triple whammy: a financial crisis, a moral vacuum, and widespread corruption. In an interview he gave recently about his new book, Garside summarized the situation grimly: China is outwardly strong but inwardly weak.

The oil-sector protesters stressed that they will continue their strike and will further expand their activities if their demands are not met. The demonstrations have been spectacularly effective and continue to grow.

According to the “official” statistics, the expansion of the strikes has been little short of amazing. Since the beginning of the strike, the movement has expanded to more than 70 companies in more than a dozen cities, including Tehran, Arak, Isfahan, Ahvaz, Abadan, Mahshahr, Jask, Gachsaran, Damavand, Behbehan, Bushehr, Kangan, Qeshm, Khark, Urmia, Kerma, Bandar Abbas, and Ilam. Given the poor reporting from Iran, it’s necessary to assume that the real numbers are substantially higher.

The strikers have gathered global enthusiasm, including explicit support from the United States Department of State, and now from the White House.

The Biden Administration has kept the worst of Trump’s policies in the Middle East, and reversed the best policies. The people of Afghanistan already endure the catastrophic results while the Lebanese suffer the indignities of defeat and invasion. “Ending endless wars” unites Trump/Biden, and will only result in more wars, US entanglements, and challenges from enemies around the world.

The most dramatic contrast is the ongoing conflict between India and China, which also entails an ideological conflict. The Chinese assert that a ruthless totalitarian regime is required to effectively govern a nation of more than a billion souls, while the Indians argue that only a democratic government can effectively manage such a task.

Both regimes have sent substantial numbers of troops to the borders, and China’s dictator recently proclaimed that it might be time for a change in Chinese public statements. Xi Jinping told a meeting of the Politburo that Beijing needed to make its international statements more “credible, likable and respectable.”

Such sentiments may reflect a desire to make China more attractive, and to downplay the longstanding style of Chinese “wolf-warrior” propaganda.

    Time will tell.

  17. QUEBEC – Nothing is coincidence.

A television drama series, a weekly probably, that has been airing since 2016 (according to Wiki) on TVA, will feature a new character this year, one that portrays a Conspiracy Theorist aka ‘Complotiste’.

Knowing that Canada’s Minister of Heritage and Culture has been pouring money into Canadian content, it’s not a far leap to understand this new character on that show is meant to disparage anyone who goes against the narrative.

“Martin Drainville will slip into the skin of a conspiracy theorist in the next season of L’échappée.

“Martin Drainville, for his part, will become Anatole Dufresne, a strange and distrustful man who likes to publish conspiracy videos on the web. A man “who stirs up shit everywhere he goes,” said the actor, smiling.

We’re in a zone that’s a bit topical these days: he’s not a conspiracy theorist, but he believes in conspiracies,” explained Martin Drainville. He believes that there is a great machination, he has animus toward journalists and the government.

He is convinced of it, and quite organized in his speech. He is very intelligent and articulate, as many of these people are. It’s nice, because it takes me completely elsewhere, away from what I usually do.”

Note: TVA caters to a mostly unilingual French clientele whose IQ might be 105 and certainly lower. Politically, the broadcaster specializes in half-truths and deliberate omissions. During the Trump-era, it was a carbon copy of CNN (probably worse, if that’s possible).

  18. DAILY MAIL – Moderna launches clinical trial testing whether its COVID-19 vaccine leads to miscarriages or stillbirths in pregnant women or birth defects in newborns despite thousands of mothers-to-be receiving the shot

Moderna will soon conduct trials to determine whether their vaccine is safe for pregnant women

The CDC does not recommend for or against pregnant women getting vaccinated

Pregnant women are more likely to suffer from negative outcomes from COVID-19

Other studies are being conducted to determine how effective the COVID-19 vaccines are for pregnant women

Moderna Inc will soon start testing its COVID-19 vaccine on pregnant women.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company announced the trial on Monday, and it expected to begin on July 22.

Scientists will observe the potential side effects the vaccine will have on the pregnant women, the infants, and whether the vaccine could cause complications in pregnancy.

Pregnant women remain in a small group of people who the vaccine has not been fully verified to be safe for.

While pregnant women are eligible for COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S., they are not professionally recommended to take it or not, as there is little data on the vaccines effects on pregnant women.

Earlier this year, the World Health Organization recommended against pregnant women getting the vaccine, before later walking back that advice.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Moderna has not yet began to recruit for the study.

They plan to enroll 1,000 women aged 18 or older who are currently pregnant.

The women all must have received a dose of the Moderna COVID vaccine within the 28 days before their last menstrual period before pregnancy.

Moderna is looking to find trends of pregnancy complications or negative pregnancy outcomes -such as a miscarriage or a stillbirth – among the women who received their vaccine.

The company will also monitor the infants born from the women in the study for one year to find any potential congenital malfunctions, or traits like low birth rate on any other diseases at a young age.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that pregnant women can protect themselves from COVID-19 by getting vaccinated, but they should make the decision on an individual basis after conversations with their doctor.

The agency reports that over 130,000 pregnant women have received at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, with 9,000 having received the Moderna’s.

Studies conducted using the vaccine on pregnant animals found no negative outcomes, per the CDC.

The agency also does not have a solid recommendation for women that are breastfeeding, though a study from April found that antibodies from the vaccine could pass through breastmilk.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has also begun a study on women who have received the vaccine to see if they are developing normal levels of antibodies.

The NIH notes in their announcement of the study that pregnant women are more likely to suffer negative outcomes, including death, from the virus.

Some research also shows that women who contract COVID while pregnant are more likely to require a premature birth or a C-section delivery.

People who have other conditions that may leave them more vulnerable to the virus, like cancer, develop lower antibody levels from the vaccine than others do, according to other research.

The Moderna shots are the second most common vaccine used in the United States, having been distributed 135 million times.
