National Guard called into Portland amid ‘widespread violence’ after election

The Oregon National Guard was called into the city of Portland after protests in the city turned violent Wednesday night, police said.
Local authorities declared a riot after groups of demonstrators destroyed property in the downtown section of the city, which the Multnomah County Sheriff’s office described as “widespread violence.”
“In the interest of public safety, Governor Kate Brown, under the advice of the Unified Command, has activated the use of the Oregon National Guard to assist local law enforcement,” the agency said in a tweet.
“Guard members are trained in crowd control and will be riding with local response teams. They are dressed in military-style garb, which is their uniform,” they added.
The outburst of destructive protests comes a day after the contentious presidential election was held Tuesday night, but no clear winner emerged by Wednesday in the contest between Joe Biden and President Trump.
On Wednesday, two groups of demonstrators rallied in separate parts of the city before making their way downtown by about 7 p.m. local time, Fox 12 reported.
Some of the protesters then ran riot in the city, destroying ATMS, vandalizing buildings and breaking windows, according to the report.

“Iran has enough “deterrent power” to repel any aggression coming from the regional countries masterminded by the United States, Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Deputy Commander for Coordination Rear Adm. Ali Fadavi said on Thursday.
“That’s why they [enemies] do not begin an aggression [against Iran],” Fadavi said, referencing Iran’s “great deterrent power,” as quoted in a report by Iranian news agency Tasnim.
In a warning to “certain regional powers,” the IRGC deputy commander said that any aggressor which resorts to assaulting Iran will “definitely suffer blows and defeat,” as quoted in the report.
At the same time, the Fadavi referenced Iran’s confrontation with the US rather than any of the regional powers, saying that Washington is avoiding a direct military confrontation with Iran and instead resorts to delegating the mission on regional countries.
Iran’s Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei was further cited in the report as saying in April 2018 that the US is aware that it will get an appropriate response if it starts a military action against Iran.
The long-standing row between Tehran and Washington reached a particular escalation in 2018. The US unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, prompting a decry among other signatories and Iran’s own gradual abandonment of commitments under the deal. It then followed up by a series of economic sanctions against Tehran and increased its military buildup in the region.
A military conflict is currently unfolding right next to Iran’s northwestern border in Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian-populated enclave inside Azerbaijan which exercises de facto independence. Tehran has repeatedly urged the warring parties to cease armed hostilities and settle the dispute politically.”

Khamenei’s tweet followed his remarks in a televised address to the nation on Tuesday, where he blasted “the US regime” for its “severe political, civil and moral deviations”, and suggested that “such a regime won’t last long”.
“Of course, if certain people hold office, they speed up its destruction, whereas with others it may take a little longer,” Khamenei said in the earlier remarks, adding that Iran’s “calculated and clear” policy toward the US wouldn’t change no matter who was in charge in Washington.
Khamenei’s Twitter trolling of Trump followed in the wake of a series of tweets by the US president Wednesday in which he accused his Democratic opponents of “trying to steal the election,” and pointed to “very strange” circumstances in key battleground states where his solid early leads “magically disappeared” after “surprise ballot dumps were counted….”

“A 76-year-old nun was assaulted on a bus in the multicultural city of Graz, Austria, according to reports. An Afghan migrant has been arrested.
The elderly sister was struck so hard in the head that her hearing aid was knocked to the floor, with the assailant fleeing the bus shortly afterwards.
The suspect, 19, was previously known to the authorities for a past history of assault and drug offences, according to the Catholic News Agency, and confessed to the crime — although the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter-Terrorism which apprehended him is yet to establish a clear motive.
The attack came around the same time as another anti-Catholic incident in which an Afghan migrant was arrested for bursting into St Stephen’s Cathedral in the Austrian capital of Vienna shouting “Islamic slogans”, which itself followed an incident in which around 50 youths of Turkish extraction swarmed into the city’s St Anthony of Padua church chanting “Allahu Akbar” and kicking confessionals and pews.

“At least 40 people fleeing extremist violence in northern Mozambique drowned when their boat sank, according to officials and reports in local media.
The boat had set off from Palma, a coastal town near the Tanzanian border, and picked up the majority of its 74 passengers near Namandingo, according to the Mozambican news services, Mediafax and Zitamar News.
The boat hit rocks and sank near Ibo island, said the reports.
At least 32 people were saved, but about 40 people drowned, according to the Portuguese news agency, Lusa. The boat was overloaded as it ordinarily carries about 30 people, reported Lusa.
The drownings occurred as thousands of people are fleeing the extremist violence in the northern part of Cabo Delgado province, many of them taking boats to get to safety.
More than 12,000 refugees arrived on 250 boats that came to Pemba, Cabo Delgado’s provincial capital, in the last two weeks of October, reported Mediafax, citing a local government document which said more than half of the arrivals were children.
More than 400,000 people have fled their homes in northern Mozambique because of the conflict with the extremists, Doctors Without Borders said this week. The NGO said that around 100,000 internally displaced people have sought refuge in and around Pemba and “lack clean drinking water and are exposed to malaria with barely any protection, while they remain in unsanitary, crowded conditions, increasing the risk of an outbreak of measles, diarrhea or COVID-19.”
The medical charity said it requires urgent support from the Mozambican government to be able to meet the basic needs of the displaced people.
“If no immediate action is taken, this situation will rapidly deteriorate,” Alain Kassa, the Mozambique country director of Doctors Without Borders. He called upon the “Mozambican authorities for support to mobilize additional humanitarian staff and supplies without delay.”
The organization suspended its operations in the Cabo Delgado towns of Mocimboa da Praia and Macomia earlier this year due to insurgent attacks and shifted operations to Pemba and Metuge where it set up camps for the displaced.”

“The office of Belgium’s federal prosecutor says two underage people suspected of plotting what it called a terror attack have been arrested.
Aged 16 and 17, they were arrested on Oct. 31 following raids in the cities of Eupen and La Calamine, located in the province of Liege. The prosecutor’s office said they are suspected of “attempted terrorist assassination and participation in a terrorist organization.”
The two minors have been placed in a youth protection center.
According to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, the two suspects had recorded a video of allegiance to the Islamic State group and are suspected of planning a stabbing attack against police officers.
The arrests were made before Monday’s attack in Vienna, where a man who had previously tried to join IS went on a rampage in the Austrian capital and fatally shot four people before he was killed by police.

“Greece’s coast guard towed a boat carrying 65 asylum-seekers to a port on the country’s western coast after it was found to be in distress in the Ionian Sea, authorities said Thursday.
The Migration and Asylum ministry said that 35 of those on board were from Turkey, 15 from Afghanistan and many of the others from Iraq.
Fifty-seven had already applied for asylum in Greece, it said, adding that they would be transferred to refugee centers, while those who had no documentation would apply for asylum.
Two people believed to be the boat’s crew members were sent to court.
It was the second case this week of Greek authorities intercepting migrant boats off the western coast of Greece, where they were believed to be heading to neighboring Italy.
On Wednesday, the coast guard said it received a call about a yacht in distress off the coast of the island of Corfu. Coast guard vessels picked up 25 people, including nine children, from the boat.
The coast guard said the adults were arrested for violating immigration laws, while the children were placed in protective custody. Authorities were searching for three people believed to be part of a migrant smuggling ring.”

“A pair of 12-year-old pupils in Strasbourg have been placed under investigation after allegedly claiming that Samuel Paty deserved to be murdered for showing his class cartoons of Mohammed.
According to the Strasbourg prosecutor’s office, the pupils are said to have agreed with the murder of the teacher, who was killed on October 16th by a Chechen radical Islamic terrorist refugee in the street and beheaded.
A judicial source layer confirmed that the two were under investigation, L’Alsace reports.
A similar incident also took place at the Louis Arbogast College in Mutzig where two 14-year-olds refused to take part in a minute’s silence for Paty and instead engaged in violent behaviour, according to Saverne Court prosecutor Aline Clérot.
In Poitiers, two Afghan migrants were arrested on Monday at an asylum centre after they promoted terrorism on social media, specifically calls targeting French president Emmanuel Macron and France.
The investigations and arrests come after several other arrests for those who have praised the actions of Chechen terrorist Abdoullakh Anzorov since his attack.
A 43-year-old man incarcerated in prison in Amiens was sentenced to eight months after he remarked on the killing to other inmates: “It’s good for him, he [the terrorist] did the job well, don’t touch my religion, my prophet.”
Another man, 42, in Colmar was sentenced to six months in prison for both praising Paty’s murder and for telling a probation officer that he wanted to carry out a similar attack in an effort to ultimately kill himself.
President Macron and his government have also cracked down on Islamist-linked groups after the terror attack, including the NGO Barakacity that was dissolved last week.
Following the dissolution of the group, its founder Idriss Sihamedi requested asylum from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.”

Trump campaign to request recount in Wisconsin
President Trump’s campaign said Wednesday it would request a recount in the state of Wisconsin, where Democratic nominee Joe Biden has a razor-thin lead but multiple outlets have projected the former vice president to win.
“There have been reports of irregularities in several Wisconsin counties which raise serious doubts about the validity of the results. The President is well within the threshold to request a recount and we will immediately do so,” Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said in a statement.
Biden was up by a little more than 20,000 votes in Wisconsin Wednesday morning, with nearly all local jurisdictions having completed the unofficial count of the votes. No networks had called the state for Biden at the time of the Trump campaign’s announcement. The Associated Press and CNN declared Biden the winner in Wisconsin later Wednesday afternoon.
Wisconsin offers 10 electoral votes, which could prove crucial to either candidate. Trump won the state by less than 1 percentage point in 2016 and Biden has pushed to return the state to the blue category this year.

One day after the election, the results are still pending and will likely depend on the rust belt. President Donald Trump holds a strong lead in the state of Michigan, but the city of Detroit and their mail-in and absentee ballots have yet to be officially tallied.
In news that will likely cast further doubt on the election results, tens of thousands of absentee ballots arrived in large U.S. Postal Service boxes at the TCF Center in Detroit, Mich. on Wednesday morning at 3:30 am. The TCF Center, formerly Cobo Hall, is where the absentee ballots are counted for Wayne County, which is the home of Detroit.

Nevada Voter Alleges Fraud: I Went to Vote and Was Told I Already Voted
A Nevada woman alleges somebody stole her mail-in ballot and voted in her name. She’s part of a federal lawsuit by the Trump campaign demanding the state to stop counting illegal votes.
“I went to vote and was told I already voted,” Jill Stoake said during a Nov. 5 Trump campaign press briefing. “I pursued the matter and in years past I always voted in person. This time, they mailed out the ballot and somebody took my ballot. They also took the ballot of my roommate.”
Nevada decided to mail ballots to all registered voters this year, a move that has led to problems.
Before the primaries in Clark County, Nevada, which covers the Las Vegas metro area, more than 223,000 mail ballots bounced due to old or wrong addresses, according to the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), which tallied the data.
PILF, a right-leaning election watchdog, also found that some Nevada voters registered at commercial addresses, which the state doesn’t allow. When a PILF investigator visited some of the addresses, he found no sign of the voters actually living there. One address was an empty lot.

The “Drug Addiction Treatment and Recovery Act” will transition Oregon’s drug policy from a punitive, criminal approach to “a humane, cost-effective, health approach.”
“People suffering from addiction are more effectively treated with health care services than with criminal punishments,” the bill reads. “A health care approach includes a health assessment to figure out the needs of people who are suffering from addiction, and it includes connecting them to the services they need.”

“Suspected militants beheaded over a dozen men and teenagers participating in a male initiation ceremony in northern Mozambique, local sources said Wednesday, in the latest violent incident in the country’s insurgency-hit northeast.
The dismembered bodies of at least five adults and 15 boys were found on Monday, scattered across a forest clearing in Muidumbe district.
Islamist militants operating in the area had attacked several nearby villages over the weekend, looting and burning down homes before retreating into the surrounding thicket.
“Police learned of the massacre committed by the insurgents through reports of people who found corpses in the woods,” said an officer in the neighboring Mueda district who asked not to be named.
“It was possible to count 20 bodies spread over an area of about 500 meters,” he added.
“These were young people who were at an initiation rite ceremony accompanied by their advisers.”
An aid worker in Mueda, who also declined to be named, confirmed the massacre had taken place, saying some of the boys had come from that area.
She said body parts had been sent to their families for burial on Tuesday.
“Funerals were held in an environment of great pain,” said the worker, hired by the World Food Programme to assist citizens displaced by the unrest.
“The bodies were already decomposing and couldn’t be shown to those present.”
Mozambican authorities have not yet commented on the deaths, and provincial police did not respond to multiple telephone calls from AFP outside office hours.
Jihadists have caused havoc in Mozambique’s northeastern Cabo Delgado province over the past three years, ravaging villages and towns as part of a campaign to establish an Islamist caliphate.
The militants have stepped up their offensive in recent months and violently seized swathes of territory, terrorizing citizens in the process.
In April, jihadists shot dead and beheaded more than 50 youths for allegedly refusing to join their ranks.
The unrest has killed over 2,000 people since 2017, more than half of them civilians, according to the US-based Armed Conflict Location & Event Data group.
Over 400,000 others have been displaced by the conflict and sought refuge in nearby towns and cities.
Around 10,000 people fled to the provincial capital Pemba via boat over the past week alone, Doctors Without Borders said Tuesday, raising concerns over access to clean water and sanitation.
Little is known about Mozambique’s jihadists, who call themselves Al Shabaab — although they have no known links to the group of that name operating in Somalia.

Elite European Anti-Jihadist Task Force Takuba Takes First Steps in Sahel

“Inside a military base in northern Mali, a concrete bollard emblazoned with French, Estonian, and Swedish flags marks a zone reserved for a new anti-jihadist unit of elite European troops.
Dubbed Task Force Takuba, the new joint deployment marks a coup for France, which has sought partners in its long fight against Islamist militants in Africa’s vast Sahel region.
French troops first deployed to Mali in 2013 after a jihadist insurgency broke out in the country the previous year.
But despite their presence, jihadist violence has spread to neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger.
Thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed in the conflict, and hundreds of thousands more have had to flee their homes.
Anger at the seemingly endless insurgency in Mali also fueled protests against president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, culminating in his ouster in a military coup on August 18.
At the base in the city of Gao, about a dozen French and Estonian soldiers from Takuba sit under an awning, surrounded by storage containers and light military vehicles.
They discuss their first mission: A sweep operation conducted in the lawless Mali-Burkina Faso border region last month, alongside local troops and French regulars.
Takuba troops are tasked with supporting elite Malian soldiers, who use motorbikes and pick-up trucks to zip into territory lost to jihadists at high speed.
“Malian armed forces arrived alone in the villages so that the population could see them,” said the commander of the Franco-Estonian unit, who gave his name as Aurelien, while the Europeans worked “discreetly.”
Despite their different backgrounds, the polyglot force had little trouble working together.
“For our unit, it’s the first time we work with the French,” said an Estonian soldier. “So far there is no problem of interoperability.”
Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and the United Kingdom all made a political commitment to send special forces to Mali in March. French special forces will also participate.
But Takuba is still in its initial stages, and it is not yet clear when the different countries will deploy their troops — with many countries requiring prior parliamentary approval.
‘Other Europeans Will Join Us’
France currently has 5,100 soldiers spread across the Sahel as part of its Operation Barkhane — and has lost some 45 soldiers since first intervening in Mali in 2013.
At a French forward base in Menaka, a town about an hour’s drive east from Gao, engineers are preparing for the arrival of more European special-forces units.
A French commander who gave his name as Cedric said he expected Czech counterparts to arrive soon. The Czech parliament approved their deployment last month.
A successful beginning for Takuba is considered crucial to its long-term success.
And for France, which is hoping to eventually draw down its own military commitment in the region, the stakes are high.
A 150-strong Swedish unit is also scheduled to deploy early next year, along with three Blackhawk helicopters.
This unit — unlike other European contingents in Takuba — will carry out rapid-response missions instead of shadowing local troops.
Italy too has authorized the deployment of up to 200 soldiers, but it is not yet clear when they will arrive.
“We hope that other Europeans will join us,” said Commander Aurelien, pointing to the need for extra support in securing the lawless border region in Mali and Burkina Faso.”
