14 Afghan security men killed in two attacks (dawn, May 29, 2020)

“Fourteen members of the Afghan security forces were killed in two separate attacks on Thursday in the first deadly assaults officials have blamed on the Taliban since the end of a three-day ceasefire.
The temporary truce ended on Tuesday but an overall lull in the country’s grinding violence has largely held despite the latest attacks, raising hopes the militants and Kabul could soon start much-delayed peace talks.
Taliban fighters attacked a checkpoint in Parwan, north of the capital, early on Thursday, said Waheeda Shahkar, spokeswoman to the provincial governor.
“The Taliban have also suffered casualties,” she said, adding that seven members of the Afghan forces died.
District police chief Hussain Shah said Taliban fighters set fire to the checkpoint, killing five security force personnel. Two more were shot dead.
In the western city of Farah, Taliban gunmen mounted an attack on a police post, killing seven policemen, provincial police spokesman Mohibullah Mohib said.
“Eight Taliban fighters were also killed in the clash that lasted for half-an-hour,” he said, adding that four policemen survived the attack.
The Taliban did not comment on the attacks immediately. But Afghan government officials said the incidents were minor and the truce could still hold.
Afghan security forces, however, carried out air strikes in the south on Wednesday that police said had killed 18 “militants”.
According to Afghanistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission, civilian casualties fell by 80 per cent during the short truce…”

“British-Pakistani Raffia Arshad has become the first hijab-wearing deputy district judge in the United Kingdom, according to media reports.
Raffia Arshad, 40, was appointed deputy district judge on the Midlands circuit last week following a 17-year career in law.
According to a statement released by the Muslim Council of Britain, Ms Arshad was the first in a Western country to be appointed a judge in hijab and amongst a handful of female Muslim judges around the world.
Educated at a Grammar School in West Yorkshire, the newly-appointed judge was the first from her family to go to university. She has also written a book titled Islamic Family Law.
“This is an achievement not just for women but Muslim women. If ever there was a time to stand up and fulfil your professional aspirations, it is now,” she said.
Ms Arshad is married with three children, the statement said.

Hidayatullah Malik, a militant from the terrorist organisation Hizbul Mujahideen was the owner of the explosives-laden car which was used for a botched bomb attack in Pulwama on Thursday, Jammu and Kashmir police confirmed on Friday.
According to police, Hidayatullah Malik is a resident of Sharatpora in Shopian, South Kashmir and joined the terrorist group in July 2019.
“The Santro car which was used for IED belongs to Hidayatullah Malik, an active Hizbul Mujahideen militant who is a resident of Sharatpora Shopian. He had joined the militant ranks in July last year,” a senior police officer said.
On 28 May, the Indian Army along with state police foiled an attempt by terrorists to carry out a 2019 Pulwama-like vehicle attack on security forces in the Pulwama district of Kashmir. The police established checkpoints at various places to detain the car, which was moving with 45 kg of explosives.

With several search operations and terrorist encounters taking place in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian intelligence reports have suggested that terrorists trained in Pakistan are planning a massive attack in Kashmir.
Intelligence sources have alleged that 20 Taliban members have been receiving military training from Pakistan in Afghanistan to carry out terror strikes in Jammu and Kashmir after the Id-ul-Fitr holiday.

The warning comes a day after Indian security forces spotted and defused a vehicle laden with nearly 40kg of explosives in south Kashmir – an attempt to carry out “2019 Pulwama-style” car-bombing on a convoy of Indian security forces.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has repeatedly stressed that India is trying to divert the world’s attention from the “genocide” in Kashmir and warned that “a false flag operation” by New Delhi was “imminent” in India-administered Kashmir.
Khan’s remarks came after Indian security forces carried out a search operation in Sringar’s Nawakadal sector, in which the Jammu and Kashmir police claimed to have shot terrorists belonging to militant group Hizbul Mujahideen.

According to the mayor, Western Macedonia has accepted the largest number of migrants and other regions in Greece should be the destination for any future transfers.
“Despite the government’s explicit assurances that no more refugees will come to the Municipality of Grevena as the competent ministry had acknowledged that our region is already carrying the heaviest weight in the region of Western Macedonia, we are eventually surprised by press reports and unofficial sources that other migrants are expected,” Dastamanis said, as quoted by the newspaper.
The deputy regional governor of the Grevena municipality Yiannis Yiatsios added that the area is housing a disproportionate number of migrants, which is placing a heavy burden on the region, the newspaper reported.
The Greek government has conducted multiple transfers of migrants from overcrowded camps on the island of Lesbos to the mainland over recent months. However, the mayor of Grevena, in Western Macedonia region, Yiorgos Dastamanis said that his municipality will not house any more migrants or asylum seekers.
In early May, the Greek government authorised the transfer of nearly 400 migrants from the Moria camp on the island of Lesbos to the mainland to ease overcrowding. According to humanitarian organizations, more than 19,000 people are crammed into the camp on the Aegean island.
More than a million migrants and asylum seekers have crossed into Greece by land or sea since 2014, according to the UN Refugee Agency. This includes nearly 10,000 people who have arrived in Greece so far this year.”

“A CHURCH has been defaced in a targeted attack, with a cross torn down and thrown to the floor.
According to reports, the church in the Kuzguncuk, Turkey was found with its cross, which is normally hanging on the door, dismantled and laying on the ground.
The cross is now remounted on the church door.
Security tapes revealed an unidentified person coming to the church, which is attended by Christian Armenians in the area, on Friday evening.
The person scaled the church gates and dismantled the cross.
Footage was handed to the relevant officials and according to International Christian Concern an investigation is ongoing.

Sepharade Kol Yehouda Synagogue in Cote Saint-Luc, Quebec desecrated.
On Wednesday, a congregant visited the synogogue to get some ritual items for use at home over the Shavuot holiday which began on Thursday night.
The synagogue has been closed for months on account of COVID-19.
He was horrified when he found Torah scrolls dumped on the floor and other religious items stuffed into toilets. It is unclear when the break-in and desecration occurred. The Montreal Police Hate Crimes Unit were contacted and an investigation is underway.
Drugs ring smashed with 140 CHILDREN among 650 arrests – £3m in drugs seized (express, May 29, 2020)

“POLICE have arrested more than 650 people and seized cash and drugs worth £3million as part of a huge crackdown on “county lines” from the Home Office.
Officers found more than 100 weapons, including firearms, and 139 “deal lines”, which are linked to unique phone numbers used by people to buy drugs.
Home Office figures released today show these were shut down between November and March.
The operations – which identified 140 children linked to the drugs trade – were carried out by the British Transport Police (BTP), the Metropolitan Police, Merseyside Police and West Midlands Police as part of new efforts to crackdown on organised crime groups.
The campaign was funded by £5m from the Government’s package of £25million to tackle “county lines”.
This is a type of gang model where young and vulnerable people are used as couriers to move drugs and money around the country.
Home Secretary Priti Patel warned she is “determined” to stop these drugs gangs “terrorising our towns and exploiting our children”.
She added the “impressive results” from the latest operation show the large investment is having a worthwhile impact.
Ms Patel said: “I am determined to roll up county lines drugs gangs and stop them from terrorising our towns and exploiting our children.
“I have seen first-hand the important work the police are doing to tackle county lines, and these impressive results show just how much of an impact our investment is having.”
“The police will always have my backing in tackling this threat and, crucially, protecting victims.”
British Transport Police have brought in dogs specialising in detecting drugs to their county lines taskforce.
Detective Superintendent Gareth Williams, who leads the operation, said: “Our taskforce works nationally, targeting the train routes used by gangs to transport drugs and cash.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) identified more than 3,000 unique deal line numbers last year, of which up to 1,100 were estimated to be active during any given month.
Nikki Holland, NCA director of investigations and joint national county lines lead, said the crackdown on county lines remains a “priority”, despite the challenges being brought on by the continued coronavirus crisis.
She said: “Protecting young and vulnerable people from county lines networks remains a priority for law enforcement, and our work continues despite the challenging situation the UK is facing with the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“We carry out operations daily and without warning, securing hundreds of arrests within a few short months.”
West Midlands Police alone West Midlands Police arrested 155 people and rescued 82 children in the crackdown on county lines drug gangs.
The force also seized 47 weapons, and drugs with a street value of £290,000.
West Midlands Police said it had “safeguarded” 82 children, meaning the force took measures to protect children from danger.
Chief Inspector Ronan Tyrer from the West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit said: “The funding has enabled us to create a taskforce dedicated to targeting top-tier drugs criminals operating in our region.
“These are people running drugs networks, exploiting vulnerable people and making large sums of money on the back of others’ suffering.
“These results are just the start: there will be many more warrants, arrests and seizures over the coming weeks and months.”
The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, David Jamieson said: “Clamping down on county lines operation is a huge task for police forces across the country and these results go to show the hard work of our officers paying off, reducing crime and potentially saving lives.
“Working with other forces to ensure we can close down county lines, safeguard young people and lock up the criminals at the top of these gangs is vital to tackling drug crime.”

Angler in his 60s dies ‘after yobs pelted him with rocks using a CATAPULT’ as he fished with his two brothers on lake in grounds of Kent’s 15th century Lullingstone Castle (dailymail, May 29, 2020)

“An angler has died after yobs allegedly pelted him with rocks using a catapult as he fished with his two brothers in a boat on a lake at a 15th century castle.
The man in his 60s died in the grounds of Lullingstone Castle in Eynsford, Kent, following the attack at 5pm yesterday by the yobs who were stood on a bank.
It is not yet clear whether the victim was actually struck and if he became ill after the attack in the picturesque Darent Valley between Sevenoaks and Dartford.
Police said this afternoon that the victim, who has not yet been named, ‘may have been involved in an altercation’ with two youths before he died.
Witnesses reported seeing armed police arrive and administer CPR before paramedics also tried to save the man’s life, but he died at the scene.
His daughter is said to have rushed to the scene where she let out what one witnesses described as a ‘piercing scream’ when she learned her father was dead.
‘She did not know what had happened and said she was just told that her father had been injured,’ said a witness.
‘The woman was at the police cordon and asked to see him and was told that he was dead. She was in tears and let out a really high pitched scream.
‘She said she last spoke to her father that morning. It was awful to see.’
Police have yet to confirm they have launched a murder investigation and have not said what led to the incident or if the death was caused by a rock.
A police source said a catapult was likely used to launch the rock at the elderly man, who is from the Essex area and was visiting the castle’s lake to go fishing.
The victim’s Volvo estate car remains behind a police cordon. Police have not made any arrests or issued a description of those they want to question over the incident.
Local residents said the lake is a dammed part of the River Darent which flows around the grounds of the castle.
One said: ‘One person said he was in the grounds of the castle and that he was fishing. There is a private lake on the grounds where you can pay to go fishing.
‘It’s quite expensive I think. Eynsford has a very high population of elderly people and a lot of them go fishing.’
The 42-year-old said yobs have been wreaking havoc in recent weeks, adding that a group of about up to 30 men aged in their 20s or older have been targeting locals.
Writing to local Tory MP Laura Trott on her Facebook page, Stephen Jury said: ‘Something needs to be done!
‘The level of anti-social behaviour in and around the villages has become a joke and there isn’t a policeman in sight until it is too late!
‘Why does it take the death of an innocent man for something to be done? I just feel for that poor man’s family but something like this was coming!’
Ms Trott, who became MP for Sevenoaks in December’s election, said: ‘All our thoughts go to the victim’s family and loved ones at this time.
‘I am speaking with the police and the local councillors this morning and I will raise your concerns regarding rising anti-social behaviour as a matter of urgency.
‘This is something a few constituents have also emailed me about and I am very concerned by the reports.’
She called for anyone with information to get in touch with police urgently.
However, there is no suggestion that it was members of that group who were allegedly throwing rocks yesterday.
A cricket club manager was allegedly threatened with a broken bottle recently, and the man said they also tried to steal a woman’s dog in nearby Farningham.
He added: ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if they were involved. Eynsford is usually so peaceful, but it’s been a nightmare over the past few weeks.’
The entrance to Lullingstone Castle remained taped off by police today. An officer and marked car was guarding the castle gate which was closed.
One woman, who walks her dog past the castle every day, said: ‘I’ve been told by someone who lives in the castle it was an angler there who (died).
‘She seems to think there were three brothers fishing on the lake there and stones were being thrown at them. It’s shocking. Two of them came in and went home but one of them never did. They’re quite elderly.
‘I was on that cricket pitch yesterday and there must have been a group of at least 20 to 30 people.
‘Kids have been coming down on the train because it’s a nice spot by the river. And during the height of lockdown this village road has been busier than the A20 with daytrippers.’
Her friend added: ‘There’s been so much trouble over the weekend. There have been yobs causing a lot of trouble at a local shop and on the local cricket pitch.
‘They pulled out hanging baskets and were throwing stones. We don’t have that sort of trouble round here.
‘There’s an old boy who tends the cricket pitch and he was threatened with a broken bottle last weekend.’
Another man from Sidcup, who goes for walks in the village, said the Lullingstone golf course was closed because it had been ‘trashed by horses and bikes’.
One concerned neighbour said there had been previous incidents by the lake where people had been stealing fish.
She said: ‘It’s a really beautiful lake down there in the castle. The only issue I’ve known in the past with the fishermen is they’ve had issues with people coming to steal the fish because they’ve got some lovely ones in there.
‘That is a known problem. All we saw was the police cars come racing past yesterday.’
Her partner added that he had stumbled across dumped laughing gas canisters near the castle while on a walk.
Nearby roads were closed and forensic officers searched fields close to the grounds. An air ambulance was also seen circling above the picturesque village.
Another witness said yesterday: ‘I came out and saw armed police running up the road. Other officers told me it was now a crime scene.’
A Kent Police spokesman said: ‘Kent Police was called at 5.21pm on Thursday, May 28 to reports of a disturbance in the grounds of Lullingstone Castle.
‘Officers and South East Coast Ambulance Service attended and a man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene.
‘It is reported he may have been involved in an altercation with two boys or teenagers near to a lake within in the grounds, prior to his death.
‘Investigators are appealing for information from anybody who was in the area, including dog walkers, anglers and golfers, who witnessed the incident or saw two young people in the vicinity of the lake between 12pm and 7pm.
‘They are also keen to obtain video footage from any vehicles that travelled along Castle Road or Shoreham Road, and any cyclists or joggers in the area between these times.'”

“A night of urban violence and rioting erupted in the Paris suburb of Montigny-lès-Cormeilles on Wednesday night following the death of an 18-year-old motorcyclist which was blamed on police.
Seven individuals aged from 16 to 32 were arrested in connection with the riots, which saw seven surveillance cameras and 12 garbage bins destroyed, and projectiles launched at the town hall and several police stations in the area.
Forty-five police officers were deployed to restore order, including officers from neighbouring municipalities.
The death of the teen took place on a railway track at around 6:45 pm. He was struck by a train while trying to cross using a pedestrian crossing between Franconville and Montigny-lès-Cormeilles with his mini motorcycle.
Rail traffic was halted along the line until midnight. Residents who heard the accident initially thought that a train had derailed. “When we saw the phone, the shoes and the puffer jacket, we understood,” one resident told the newspaper, Le Parisien.
Shortly after the accident, local youths began blaming the police for the death of the teen, the deputy departmental director of public security for Val-d’Oise said. An official French police Twitter account denied the accusation, labelling the allegations “fake news”.
A resident denied a police connection, saying: “They are convinced that the young man was being chased by the police, but no. We were there immediately afterwards. There was no one.”
The case echoes another incident a month prior in which a motorcyclist had been injured after an accident involving police in Villeneuve-la-Garenne.
Police were once again blamed for the incident and cities and towns across France saw rioting and attacks on police in various no-go areas for multiple nights despite France being under lockdown due to the Wuhan coronavirus.
Earlier this month, the commune of Argenteuil saw multi-night riots after the death of a motorcyclist who lost control of his motorcycle near a police vehicle. Cars and other items were set on fire and police were also attacked with Molotov cocktails.”

“Illegal migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats threaten to drown themselves or their children in order to keep the French ships back, according to reports.
Migrants from coronavirus-infected camps on the French coast have been crossing the English Channel in record numbers, with many seemingly being escorted into British territorial waters by French ships rather than intercepted and turned around.
The British government, which has paid the French government millions of pounds to stop migrants from using their country as a launchpad to Britain, has defended this state of affairs — exposed by Brexit leader turned investigative reporter Nigel Farage — on grounds that the French authorities allegedly cannot intercept the migrants request assistance under international law — and that the British authorities, similarly, cannot turn the boats around but must bring them the rest of the way to England to lodge their bogus asylum claims.
Many members of the public are sceptical of these explanations, given the Australians implemented a successful policy of turning back migrant boats years ago — but new reports reveal the French have claimed a new excuse for not intercepting migrants, as the individuals apparently threaten to throw themselves or their children overboard if their ships get too close.
“When rigid-hulled inflatable dinghies are approached by French patrol vessels, the migrants threaten to jump overboard or throw their children into the water to prevent officials from helping them,” reported Richard Ford, home correspondent for The Times, on Thursday.
“The French have little option but to back off and shadow the boats until they are close to a UK Border Force vessel,” he suggested.
It seems clear, however, that migrants behaving in this manner would be committing a variety of crimes under international law and the domestic laws of both Britain and France — and yet neither country has given any indication that it is arresting the illegal migrants crossing to Britain for such acts.
It also remains unclear why the migrants could not, once picked up by the UK Border Force or received on shore, still be sent back to France, as the international conventions against so-called “push-backs” are not legally binding.
Home Secretary Priti Patel is “planning to bring in new laws after Britain leaves the EU to make it easier to return cross-Channel migrants to France”, according to The Telegraph.
The wording of the report, perhaps unintentionally, exposes the illusory nature of Brexit, which technically took place in January, as so long as Britain remains in the present “transition period” with the EU it remains a member-state in all but name, still subject to the bloc’s laws, judges, trade policy, and migration regime.”

“Belgium saw a population growth of 61,235 people in 2019 with 89 per cent of the growth coming from immigration, according to figures released by the Belgian statistics office Statbel.
The country also saw 6,820 more births than deaths in 2019 which represented 11 per cent of the total population growth, but the birthrate has slowed significantly from around 2017 with births being consistently under 120,000 a year since that year.
Migration has driven nearly all of the population growth in 2019, according to the agency, with Belgians returning to the country being the largest group of migrants followed by 10,259 Romanians, 4,983 Moroccans, and 4,067 French nationals.
Flanders saw the majority of the population growth, increasing by 40,074 people compared to French-speaking Wallonia, which increased by 11,448 people. The Brussels region saw an increase of 9,913 and Brussels itself saw the largest growth of any major city in the country.
Belgium follows many other European countries which have seen population growth almost solely due to mass migration in recent years. In Germany, the country saw an increase of 918,000 during the height of the migrant crisis in 2015 and another 316,000 the following year.
A report released last year claimed that mass migration into Germany had dramatically increased the number of migrant-background residents to the point where where they now represent 25.5 per cent, or one in four, of the overall German population.
Among young people in Western Germany, the demographic shift is even more pronounced. A 2018 report from the German Federal Statistical Office revealed that 42 per cent of children under the age of six came from migrant backgrounds.
Nearly all of the European Union countries, aside from a few exceptions such as Ireland and France, also have negative birthrates, with Italy having just 7.3 births per thousand inhabitants in 2018.
Several countries have also revealed a disparity between the number of children born to native women and migrant-background women, with migrant-background women generally having far higher birthrates.”

New report alleges killings, mass detentions in Ethiopia (abcnews, May 29, 2020)

“A new report by the rights group Amnesty International accuses Ethiopia’s security forces of extrajudicial killings and mass detentions even as the country’s reformist prime minister was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
The report issued Friday says security forces killed at least 25 people in 2019 in the East Guji and West Guji zones of the restive Oromia region amid suspicions of supporting a rebel group, the Oromo Liberation Army, and a once-exiled opposition group. And at least 10,000 people under suspicion were detained between January and September, with most “subjected to brutal beatings.”
The government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who was awarded the peace prize in December for sweeping political reforms and restoring ties with neighboring Eritrea after two decades of hostilities, did not comment on the report, which comes amid concerns that some repressive measures have returned.
Tensions among some of Ethiopia’s more than 80 ethnic groups have risen, along with some calls for more autonomy, and the new report also documents some of the intercommunal violence in the Oromia and Amhara regions, the country’s most populous.
Such violence is a concern as the country faces a crucial national election, now delayed because of the coronavirus, that will be a measure of support for the country’s changes since Abiy took office in early 2018.
With no election date set and mandates for the executive and regional and federal legislatures ending in October, political parties are disagreeing on strategies for how to avoid a potential constitutional crisis.
Amnesty acknowledged that Ethiopian authorities have made notable progress in changing the country’s bleak human rights record. But “with elections on the horizon, these violations and abuses could escalate out of control unless the government takes urgent measures to ensure security forces act within the law,” said Deprose Muchena, the group’s director for East and Southern Africa, adding that “authorities must also recognize that holding diverse political views and opinions is legal.”
The new report blames a range of actors for the violence during 2019 including regional police special forces, local administration officials and armed youth and vigilante groups. The rights group noted that in the new, wider political space some politicians have been “stirring up ethnic and religious animosities,” sparking violence in five of the country’s nine regional states.
“The research finds a horrendously botched security operation at work in Amhara and Oromia regions characterized by impunity that is difficult to imagine in present-day Ethiopia,” Amnesty said. Former detainees told the rights group about multiple cases of arbitrary arrest and detention of family members, including children, when security officials couldn’t find the person they sought to arrest.
In the Oromia region, the government in January 2019 launched a law enforcement offensive against the Oromo Liberation Army, which had staged armed attacks in the region. The armed group broke away from the political wing of the once-exiled Oromo Liberation Front, which under Ethiopia’s reforms returned to the country to pursue a peaceful political agenda.
In the Amhara region, “at least 150 people were killed in inter-communal conflict in which the security forces were complicit,” the report said, noting that at least 58 ethnic Qimant, who seek more autonomy, were killed within 24 hours in January 2019. “The attacks and counter-attacks led to internal displacement of thousands of ethnic Amhara and Qimant people.”
The deputy head of the Amhara Regional Peace and Security Bureau told the rights group that more deaths could have occurred if the security forces had not been deployed and rejected the claim that security forces were complicit in some of the attacks.
Several other government offices did not respond to the report, Amnesty said.
Two opposition groups reacted to the new report with further allegations.
“The report covers the period up to the end of 2019. However, the situation in the Oromia region specifically has gotten progressively worse in 2020 with a substantial rise in mass incarcerations, extrajudicial killings and destruction of property in provinces that were not previously affected,” said a joint statement issued by the Oromo Liberation Front and Oromo Federalist Congress.
“The report is further proof that the new administration has not parted ways with the practice of forcefully stifling dissent.””

“An invasion of locusts has spread across Pakistan, officials said Friday, causing damage to crops and orchards and posing a threat to food security in an impoverished Islamic nation already struggling to tackle a virus pandemic that has caused more than 1,300 deaths.
Massive swarms of the desert locust, which experts say originates in Africa and is the most destructive of the locust species, began damaging crops in Pakistan last month.
But the situation worsened this week and authorities began dispatching aircraft and spraying machines filled with pesticides mounted on vehicles to eliminate the insects, which are roughly the length of a finger and fly together by the millions.
Farmers could be seen wading through clouds of the insects as some tried to kill them with sticks.
Chaudhry Asghar, an agriculture officer in Multan, said millions of desert locusts had already damaged orchards, crops and vegetables.
“We have intensified efforts to save our crops from any further invasion of locusts,” Syed Fahar Imam, minister for National Food Security, said Friday. He said the government will buy five more aircraft for spraying crops.
The insects have wreaked havoc on swathes of farmland in eastern Punjab, southern Sindh and southwestern Baluchistan provinces. They also attacked crops in the northwest bordering Afghanistan.
The locusts have also brought agricultural destruction to neighboring India, where critics pointed the finger at Pakistan as a new breeding ground for the desert locusts. Pakistani officials said no country should blame another for the situation, but all affected countries need to make collective efforts to prevent a possible food crisis in the region.
Farmers say while crops of rabi, a type of grain, were sown in winter and harvested in the spring, locusts are damaging cotton and vegetable crops sown in April.
“I have already lost my cotton crop and vegetables because of these locusts,” Abdul Rehman, a farmer in Baluchistan province, said. He asked what they would eat if the locusts continued unchecked.
The National Disaster Management Authority said resources were being mobilized and operations were underway to curb the locust invasion.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has struggled to contain the spread of the coronavirus, with more than 64,000 cases confirmed and more than 1,300 fatalities.
The country reported 57 virus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, its most in one day since the outbreak began in February. Infections increased in Pakistan, including Islamabad, recently after the government eased lockdown restrictions — ignoring warnings from medical professionals.”

“Bosnian police said Friday that two men were killed in an apparent clash among migrants in a northwestern region near the border with Croatia.
Thursday’s incident happened amid stepped-up movement of migrants in the Balkan region toward Western Europe following the easing of measures against the new coronavirus.
A police spokesman said officers responded to a call from locals who reported a clash between migrants in a small village outside the town of Cazin toward the Croatian border.
On their way to the village, police found two bodies with stab wounds on the road and several migrants trying to help them, spokesman Ale Siljdedic told The Associated Press.
The victims did not have identification documents with them and an investigation is underway to resolve the incident, he said.
Thousands of migrants have been stuck in the Balkan countries during the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the new coronavirus. Those in Bosnia want to cross into European Union member Croatia and move further west from there.
Siljdedic said about 100-150 migrants arrive daily from other parts of Bosnia to his northwestern region near Croatia. He said police expect the flow to pick up as the weather gets warmer.
Migrants from the Middle East, Africa or Asia must cross a mountainous region in order to reach Croatia from Bosnia. Many spend months in Bosnia and make several attempts to cross before succeeding.
Croatian police have faced accusations of using violence to halt migrant entry, which they have denied.”
