Reader’s Links for April 26, 2020

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Honest conduits for information are largely gone. We need a list so people know of conduits that cannot be trusted. But, then, this list would be too long, and the truth of a particular conduit is not always black and white. Then you have to check the checker, so ultimately we all need our own b.s. meter.

Zero Hedge, for example, is a Russian-propelled doom-porn outlet whose prime directive seems to be to make America look bad. Credit to Yucki for opening my eyes to this. However within ZH there can be apolitical gems on economics replete with technical explanations that are quite helpful. So you have to sort through.

Sourced more frequently by ZH is something called The Strategic Culture Foundation.

    No surprise here.

Then we have Vlad’s experience yesterday with Twitter. Scroll down to yesterday if you missed that one. Twitter has decided political activism is more important than providing a basic service and running a business:

Netflix stock value has exploded under the lockdown. Now here’s another toxic outlet. I was scrolling through with my kid because we’d exhausted our own movie collection, and finally I had to declare, exasperatedly, that everything was political. “Of course,” replied the teenager to the slow-witted father.

He hid behind his turn of words and the lyricism he gave those words. That was dishonest. We see it from our most clever, wordy types.

Conversely, he understood electronic speed of media would enable mass panic. How right was this, now that we must poke through the economic rubble of our panpanic?

  3. Now it is official: Corona lockdown does not apply to refugees in Germany, only to Germans

The Corona hysteria has ensured that fitness centres and sports facilities throughout Germany remain closed. Even joint training of football, handball and other teams is not possible because of the ban on physical contact. Obviously, however, this only applies to Germans. Quite different in Elsterwerda in the state of Brandenburg, as the newspaper Lausitzer Allgemeine (article with a paywall) reports:There is standing – full of sadness and with proper distance to each other – a group of German recreational sportsmen in front of their supposedly closed sports hall. They discuss how things could go on during and after the lockdown. The group couldn’t hardly believe it when all of a sudden the light inside turns on and the training starts:but only for “unaccompanied minor refugees”. Dozens of young people practice team sports, work out, play. No distance, no masks, fully physical contact. Germans, however, have to stay outside. The crazy statement by the authorities: All young migrants live together in one institution. This could well be seen as a “family bond” and so they could do everything together – even do sports.Corona is facing German families with problems that cannot be overcome: daycare and school closed, jobs at risk, no money. But if you enter our country saying the magic word “asylum”, you don’t need to bother with such things and – thanks to the red tape – you can even enjoy the currently empty gym. Unbelievable!

  7. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to Take Delivery of New Stealthy Drone With 2,000 km Range – Report (sputniknews, Apr 26, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/military/202004261079098349-irans-revolutionary-guards-to-take-delivery-of-new-stealthy-drone-with-2000-km-range—report/

“First unveiled in late 2013, the prospective ‘Fotros’ drone, built by the Iran Aviation Industries Organization, was once thought to have been an abandoned prototype.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Ground Force plans to take delivery of an undisclosed number of long-range Fotros drones, the force’s drone division commander Col. Akbar Karimloo has revealed.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Karimloo indicated that the drones would be delivered sometime ‘in the near future’, with the decision to accept the unmanned aerial vehicle into service based on extensive meetings with the ministry of defence, as well as an evaluation of its features.

First unveiled in November 2013, the Fotros is a large multipurpose drone capable of engaging in reconnaissance and combat operations, with an operational range of up to 2,000 km and an endurance time of up to 30 hours. The drone is said to have a 7,600 meter flight ceiling, and the ability to be armed with precision-guided air-to-surface missiles or anti-tank missiles.

The drone’s outward appearance seems to be in line with design concepts found in many Western high-tech drone designs, including a bulbous nose similar to that of the US Predator drone, presumably containing the UAV’s avionics. Otherwise, the UAV matches many of the characteristics of drones produced by other major powers in the region, includes a straight wing design, a twin-boom tail, and rear-mounted engine.

In Shia mythology, Fotros (‘Petros’ or ‘Peter’) is a reference to a fallen angel banished to an isolated island for almost 700 years, his wings clipped as punishment for his weakness, but who was redeemed by Imam Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, one of the holiest figures of Shia Islam.

Iran is one of just a handful of countries in the world with the capability to produce domestic drone designs. In addition to the Fotros, the country has about half-a-dozen other military UAVs already in production. The country’s military industry has enjoyed success in the development and production of a wide variety of homegrown military equipment in spite of the fact that its military budget is several times smaller than that of its likely adversaries. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute estimates that the country spent the equivalent of $13 billion on defence in 2018. For comparison, the United States, Saudi Arabia and Israel spent some $649 billion, $67.6 billion and $15.9 billion on defence during the same period.”

  9. Kim Jong-Un won’t be dead until there’s a succession in place. I wouldn’t bet on what it will be
By J.E. Dyer April 26, 2020A few notes on the story in North Korea, which is the real story at the moment. It’s potentially the biggest opportunity in a generation. Whatever is going on right now, the day when it actually is that opportunity will come. We can hope this is it.

First, to reiterate: The public knows very little about what’s going on in North Korea. Under the traditional circumstances up until the last 18 months or so, the U.S. government didn’t know a whole lot more than the public. Even with the Trump-Kim rapprochement, we can’t congratulate ourselves that our direct visibility into the machinations of the North Korean leadership has expanded that much.

That said, we aren’t without signals to interpret. South Korea, moreover, a U.S. ally and the nation most closely attuned to the North, watches as vigilantly as possible, and shares a great deal with us. South Korea is also as closed-mouthed as necessary for security and strategic latitude. The South Koreans will not be tipping their hand publicly on anything.

As to signals for interpretation, Adam Housley tweeted about a key one on Saturday. The 25th of April is Army Day in Pyongyang, and if the leader is at all able to be propped upright, it is basically unheard-of for him to miss it. Kim Jong-Un missed Army Day, with not even a recorded message being broadcast.

  10. Germany: Building sealed off for COVID-19 testing after residents violate restrictions

Around 450 residents of an apartment complex in Grevenbroich, North Rhine-Westphalia, were due to be tested for COVID-19 on Sunday after some of their infected neighbours violated movement restrictions.

The complex, known as ‘honeycomb houses’, was cordoned off by police while the German Red Cross set up a testing facility outside.

Eight people from two families living in the building were tested positive for the novel coronavirus earlier but reportedly violated the quarantine requirements.

  11. USA: Anti-shutdown protesters demonstrate in Miami

Protesters gathered outside Miami’s historic Freedom Tower on Saturday to demonstrate against the lockdown aimed at fighting the coronavirus pandemic, demanding the reopening of the economy.

“Businesses have suffered greatly in these times, small businesses are the workforce of America. We don’t, I’m not advocating for the complete opening of Florida. That would be irresponsible but I do want to give the liberty to be able to open responsibly to those businesses that are shut down. What is an essential business to the government might not be an essential business for me,” said demonstration organiser, Enrique Tarrio.

Tarrio, who is also the chair of the Florida Proud Boys and Florida Latinos for Trump, said that he organised the demonstration not only in Miami but also in Orlando and Tallahassee.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/04/26/lib-dem-councillor-apologises-tweeting-photo-bacon-solidarity/

“A Liberal Democrat councillor has been forced to apologise after tweeting a photo of a plate of bacon in “solidarity” with Muslims fasting for Ramadan.

Ian Manning, a county councillor in Cambridgeshire, was taking part in “Lib Dem Iftar”, where Liberal Democrats fasted with Muslims for one day on Saturday.

He tweeted a photo of a plate of bacon and boiled eggs, with the caption: “Up early to start my fast for #LibDemIftar! Really not sure I’ll get through to the evening but we’ll see!”

After it was pointed out to Mr Manning that Muslims do not eat pork, he deleted the tweet and apologised.

“Re food photo earlier. Important point is the fast. Allergies mean choices limited,” he said.

“This is a learning experience, and I’d prefer to be honest about…”

  14. Canada warns against use of anti-malarial drug chloroquine as coronavirus treatment

MONTREAL (AFP, REUTERS) – Canadian health authorities have issued a warning against the use of anti-malarial drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus infections or prevent reinfections.

“Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine can have serious side effects. These drugs should be used only under the supervision of a physician,” Canada’s public health agency said in a note posted Saturday (April 25) on its website.

“Health Canada is concerned that some people may be directly buying and using chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine to prevent or treat Covid-19,” it said, noting they can cause “serious heart rhythm problems.”

The European Medicines Agency on Thursday issued a similar warning about the drugs, whose promise as a coronavirus treatment has been touted by US President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile the total number of people killed by the coronavirus in Canada rose by under 6% to 2,489 in a day, official data posted by the public health agency showed on Sunday.

The figure for those diagnosed with the coronavirus had climbed to 45,791, according to a statement. On Saturday there were 2,350 deaths and 44,364 positive diagnoses.

    Summary
    Product: Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine

Issue: Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine can have serious side effects. Health Canada is concerned that some people may be directly buying and using chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine to prevent or treat COVID-19.

What to do: Use chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine only if it has been prescribed for you by a physician who is supervising your treatment. Contact your physician if you experience an irregular heart rate, dizziness, fainting, seizures, or other side effects while taking these drugs.

    Issue

Ottawa – Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine may cause serious side effects, including serious heart rhythm problems. The risk of these side effects may increase at higher doses, or if the drugs are used in combination with other drugs, such as the antibiotic azithromycin. Patients should use these drugs only under the supervision of a physician. Health Canada is concerned that some people may be directly buying and using chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to prevent or treat COVID-19 without a prescription.

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are approved prescription medications to treat malaria and certain autoimmune diseases, including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. They are known to potentially cause liver or kidney problems, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and nervous system problems such as dizziness, fainting, or seizures. The effects on heart rhythm, which in the most serious cases, may be fatal. Children are especially sensitive to these drugs, and even small doses taken by children can be dangerous.

Health Canada has not authorized any drugs to prevent, treat or cure COVID-19 and has warned Canadians about products making false and misleading claims.

There are a number of medications being investigated to treat or prevent COVID-19, both in Canada and internationally. The best way to access experimental therapies is through clinical trials. Health Canada has authorized clinical trials with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19. Results from large, well-designed studies are essential to determine if the benefits of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine outweigh their risks in the treatment of COVID-19. To date, data from clinical trials are limited, and the results have not conclusively shown that any specific medications are effective against COVID-19.

Patients and health care professionals are reminded to report any suspected side effects to Health Canada. Health Canada will continue to closely monitor the safety and effectiveness of chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, and other drugs used in the treatment of COVID-19. It will take appropriate and timely action if new health risks are identified, and inform Canadians as necessary.

If you buy drugs online, you may be putting your health at serious risk. This is especially true if you order prescription drugs without being examined in person by a health care practitioner. Some Internet pharmacies are legitimate, but many offer products and services that are dangerous.

    What you should do
Use chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine only if it has been prescribed for you by a physician who is supervising your treatment.

Contact your physician if you experience an irregular heart rate, dizziness, fainting, seizures, or other side effects while taking these drugs.

Be cautious when buying drugs over the internet. If you have questions about whether an internet pharmacy is legitimate, contact the pharmacy regulatory authority in your province or territory.

Report any health product adverse events to Health Canada.

Report any complaints regarding unauthorized products to Health Canada.

    What industry professionals should do

Investigational use of approved therapies like hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine should be done in the context of a well-designed clinical trial.

Consult the Canadian product monographs for a full list of contraindications, warnings and precautions, adverse reactions and drug interactions.

Monitor patients closely if treated with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, especially
-If there are pre-existing heart conditions

    – When using higher doses

    – If prescribing in combination with other medications such as azithromycin that may prolong the QT interval.

  15. Lib Dem Leader Fasting for ‘Holy Month of Ramadan’ in ‘Solidarity’ with Muslims (breitbart, Apr 26, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/04/26/lib-dem-leader-fasting-holy-month-ramadan-solidarity-muslims/

“Sir Edward ‘Ed’ Davey, acting leader of the Liberal Democrats, has received criticism after revealing that he is fasting “for the holy month of Ramadan” in “solidarity with Muslims” affected by the coronavirus lockdown.

“It’s an early rise for me today, as I prepare for my first ever fast for the holy month of Ramadan,” said the dishevelled 54-year-old in a video message shared on social media.

“I want to show solidarity with Muslims who are in isolation during this month, and this evening there will be a Lib Dem iftar, when we have a virtual community meal together,” the MP continued.

    “So, Ramadan Mubarak.”

    A pre-dawn meal today

Preparing for my first ever fast in the holy month of Ramadan

For Muslims doing Ramadan in isolation, you are not alone!#RamadanMubarak

Sir Ed, who served as Energy Secretary during the former Cameron-Clegg coalition government between the Tories and the Liberal Democrats, did not win the plaudits he may have been hoping for, however, with the response to his message being overwhelmingly negative — and accusations of opportunistic “virtue-signalling” providing a common theme.

Many social media users also accused the left-liberal MP of cynical double standards, highlighting his comparative lack of “solidarity” with Christians during Lent — or any mention of the observance on his timeline at all, seemingly — or with religious minorities besides Muslims during their periods of fasting.

“Did you fast in Navratri @EdwardJDavey, the 9 sacred days for #Hindus which just concluded?” asked one user. [A]ny plans to do in [O]ctober month?”

They did not receive a response.

The anti-Brexit MP is not the only front-rank politician to receive flak for appearing to lavish a disproportionate amount of attention on Muslims in recent days, with Health Secretary Matt Hancock having received criticism for heaping praise on their Ramadan “sacrifice” on St George’s Day — but not mentioning the English national day at all.

Critics of the Health Secretary who accused him of having made no mention of Easter either were mistaken, as he did share an Easter Sunday message — although compared to his Ramadan message, which highlighted the Islamic holy month’s religious significance and the contributions of Muslims to public life, it was bland and generic, containing no direct references to Christianity or Christians.”

  16. Vandals Desecrate Catholic Church in Northern France (breitbart, Apr 26, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/faith/2020/04/26/vandals-desecrate-catholic-church-in-northern-france/

“The village church of Saint-Remy in northern France was found vandalized on Friday despite a coronavirus lockdown confining people to their homes.

The mayor of the town of Marly-Gomont, Dominique Delache, posted a message on his Facebook page to say he was “very angry” to have discovered the church vandalized, in which he notes that “the door was broken, the Easter candle destroyed, the microphone torn off and a fire extinguisher struck and sprayed throughout the church.”

“This is a lack of respect that shocks me deeply,” the mayor added, before announcing that until further the order the church will remain closed because “cleaning is complicated.”

The pictures below, supplied via Facebook, give an indication of the damage suffered.

According to the mayor, this was the second time that the church has been targeted in the middle of the night in the last two years.

Europe has experienced a growing number of acts of vandalism and profanation of Christian sites, with the greatest number of such acts occurring in France, where churches, schools, cemeteries, and monuments “are being vandalized, desecrated, and burned at an average rate of three per day,” according to reports drawing from government statistics.

French churches and other Christian monuments have come increasingly under attack, with an average of nearly three churches per day targeted for vandalism over the past three years.”

  17. Saudi Arabia ends death penalty for minors and floggings (abcnews, Apr 26, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/saudi-arabia-ends-death-penalty-minors-floggings-70353516

“Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has ordered an end to the death penalty for crimes committed by minors, according to a statement Sunday by a top official.

The decision comes on the heels of another ordering judges to end the practice of flogging, replacing it with jail time, fines or community service and bringing one of the kingdom’s most controversial forms of public punishment to a close.

King Salman’s son and heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is seen as the force behind the kingdom’s loosening of restrictions and its pivot away from ultraconservative interpretations of Islamic law known as Wahhabism, which many in the country still closely adhere to.

In the face of some domestic opposition, the crown prince has sought to modernize the country, attract foreign investment and revamp Saudi Arabia’s reputation globally. He’s also overseen a parallel crackdown on liberals, women’s rights activists, writers, moderate clerics and reformers. The 2018 killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey by agents who worked for the crown prince drew sharp criticism internationally.

The latest royal decree by King Salman will spare the death penalty for at least six men from the country’s minority Shiite community who allegedly committed crimes while under the age of 18, including Ali al-Nimr, who had participated in anti-government protests.

Rights groups like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have long called on the kingdom to abolish the use of the death penalty, particularly for crimes committed by minors.

The president of the Saudi government’s Human Rights Commission, Awwad Alawwad, confirmed the latest decision in a statement Sunday, saying it helps the kingdom establish “a more modern penal code and demonstrates the kingdom’s commitment to following through on key reforms.”

He said “more reforms will be coming,” and that the two decisions “reflect how Saudi Arabia is forging ahead in its realization of critical human rights reforms even amid the hardship imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The decree expands on a previous order by King Salman issued in late 2018, which set a maximum 10-year prison term for minors in certain cases, except for crimes punishable by death. Now the 10-year maximum applies to all crimes by minors.

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court recently issued a directive to end flogging as a form of punishment sometime in April, according to a document seen by The Associated Press.

The public spectacle of whipping a handcuffed prisoner for often non-violent crimes had drawn some comparisons to the types of punishment carried out by extremist groups like the Islamic State. Saudi authorities had argued was a form of deterrence against potential criminals. Rights groups criticized the practice as inhumane.

The Supreme Court document said the decision was in line with the kingdom’s reforms and developments in the realm of human rights as directed by King Salman and overseen by the crown prince.

Five years ago, prominent Saudi blogger Raif Badawi was given 50 lashes before hundreds of spectators in the metropolitan city of Jiddah. It drew outrage and condemnation from around the world, including from many of Saudi Arabia’s Western allies. Badawi’s feet and hands were shackled during the flogging but his face was visible.

Badawi is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence and was ordered to pay more than $266,000 in fines on charges related to his criticism of Saudi Arabia’s powerful clerics on the liberal blog he founded.

While some crimes, such as murder, may carry fixed punishments under Saudi Arabia’s interpretation of Islamic law, or Shariah, many other offenses are considered “tazir,” meaning neither the crime nor the punishment is defined in Islam.

Discretionary judgments for “tazir” crimes, such as flogging, have led to arbitrary rulings with contentious outcomes. Muslim countries generally do not practice public flogging.”

  18. Activists: Turkish troops shoot dead 2 protesters in Syria (abcnews, Apr 26, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/activists-turkish-troops-shoot-dead-protesters-syria-70353121

“Turkish troops fired tear gas and live bullets at protesters blocking a major highway in northwest Syria early Sunday, killing two people and wounding others, opposition activists said.

The protesters have been blocking part of the highway near the government-held village of Nairab in Idlib province for weeks to prevent joint Turkish-Russian patrols.

Patrols on the M4 highway, which runs east-west through Idlib province, are part of a cease-fire agreement between Turkey and Russia signed in early March. The cease-fire ended an escalation in fighting that saw the Turkish military in rare direct conflict with Syrian government troops.

Turkish and Russian troops officially began joint patrols on March 15 on the M4. But the patrols had to be shortened because of protests by those opposed to the deal, which allows Russian troops to patrol rebel-held areas.

Turkey backs the opposition in Idlib, while Russia has been a main backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government. Moscow joined the war in 2015, helping turn the balance of power in Assad’s favor.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said Turkish troops removed debris from the highway Sunday morning and were met by protesters who threw stones at the force, which later opened fire. The Observatory said the two people killed were militant fighters.

The activist collective Al-Dorar Al-Shamia described the two killed as protesters, and said three others were wounded in Sunday’s shooting.

There was no immediate comment from the Turkish military.

Turkey has been working on opening the highway by ending the sit-in by supporters of militant groups in rebel-held parts of Idlib, led by the al-Qaida-linked Levant Liberation Committee.

The vital highway, which runs through northern Syria from the Mediterranean to the Iraqi border, has been partially closed since 2012. Some sections of the M4 remain under rebel control, unlike the north-south M5 highway, which Syrian forces completely recaptured in the latest offensive.

Turkey and Russia already conduct joint military patrols elsewhere in Syria. Following an agreement that halted Turkey’s attack on Kurdish forces in October, soldiers from the two countries monitor an area of northeast Syria along the Turkish border.”

  19. Kim Jong Un In ‘Vegetative State,’ Japanese Media Claims

A Japanese magazine is reporting that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is in a vegetative state after falling gravely ill following heart surgery.

    • Report: Kim Jong Un in ‘vegetative state’ after stent procedure gone wrong

Japanese magazine cites medic as saying delay in a simple surgery left Jong Un in a severe condition

As mixed signals are coming regarding the state of North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, an unconfirmed report in the Japanese media claims that Pyongyang’s leader may be in a “vegetative state.”

According to by Shukan Gendai, a Japanese magazine, during a visit to a rural area earlier in April, Jong Un unexpectedly collapsed, clutching his chest.

Citing a member of a Chinese medical team in North Korea, the outlet claimed the North Korean leader was rushed to a nearby hospital, with help from Beijing called in at once.

Jong Un reportedly required a stent procedure — a surgery that involves a tube placed into a congested blood vessel to ensure that blood circulation can continue.

While the procedure in question is not too complex, the magazine’s source said, the surgeon was not used to dealing with patients with obesity and was too nervous during the operation, resulting in a delay which left Kim Jong Un in a “vegetative state.”

  20. Coronavirus Crisis: China Isn’t Going to Win

“Is China Winning?” This was the cover headline that the British weekly The Economist unfurled earlier this month for a lengthy report on how the major powers might emerge out of the current coronavirus crisis.

This is not the first time that a section of Western media, often including The Economist, pronounce the Western democracies, especially the United States, as losers in comparison with rivals and/or enemies.

In the 1980s, the magazine beat the drums for “Japan As Number One”, echoing Ezra Vogel’s book-length rodomontade for the so-called “faultless economic model.” In the 1990s, The Economist, with President Suharto on its cover, predicted the rise of Indonesia as one of the world’s top economic powers. And in 2005, the magazine offered another sensational cover with the headline: “Has Iran Won?”

But to return to China “winning”, the issue at hand, one might question the very premise of the presumed game in which the People’s Republic is supposed to emerge ahead of the pack. As a global catastrophe, rather than a stage for international competition, Covid-19 is unlikely to produce any winners.

Even if “winning” is intended to refer to refer to the extent of the human and economic damage caused by the pandemic, predicting China’s triumph may be open to question. At the time of writing, Beijing has admitted to 82,000 cases of Covid-19 and 4,632 deaths, remarkable for a population of over 1.5 billion.

  21. the guardian – Hungary prepares to end legal recognition of trans people

Trans people fear more discrimination as Orbán pushes through law defining gender based on ‘sex at birth’

Hungary’s rightwing government looks likely to push through legislation that will end the legal recognition of trans people by defining gender as “biological sex based on primary sex characteristics and chromosomes” and thus making it impossible for people to legally change their gender.

Trans people and rights activists say the law, which has been introduced into parliament as attention is focused on the coronavirus pandemic, will increase discrimination and intolerance towards trans people. Many will try to leave the country, while those who do not have that chance will face daily humiliations.

“In Hungary, you need to show your ID to rent a bike, buy a bus pass or to pick up a package at the post office. It basically means coming out as trans to complete strangers, all the time. The good version is they are nice about it, but there are situations where people turn quite hostile,” said Ivett Ördög, a 39-year-old trans woman living in Budapest.

Hungary’s anti-immigration prime minister, Viktor Orbán, has prompted a wave of international criticism during the coronavirus pandemic by adopting legislation that allows him to rule by decree indefinitely. Parliament is still sitting, but instead of focusing on fighting coronavirus, it is dealing with issues such as the new trans legislation.

Bernadett Szél, an independent MP who has opposed the law in parliament’s judicial committee, described it as “evil” and “a step back in time”. During a hearing in the committee, she tried to read out a letter from trans people explaining how harmful the law would be for them, but was shut down by the committee’s chair, who described the letter as “not relevant”.

Szél also criticised the timing of the bill. “We have a pandemic going on and all of us should be focusing on two things: healthcare issues and helping people financially to secure their wellbeing. What is happening in Hungary is a scandal,” she said. It is not clear when the bill will be put to a vote, but observers say its passage through committees suggests the government is pushing ahead with it.

The law also opens up the possibility that it could target people who have already made a legal change and now live with a gender that does not match their “sex at birth”, the planned new gender category on official documents.

“We think it’s likely that they don’t plan to go after people who already changed, but we just don’t know,” said Tamás Dombos, a board member of the Háttér Society, a Hungarian organisation focused on LGBTQI rights.

Legal experts say the new law will be in violation of European human rights case law, leaving it open to challenge in both the Hungarian supreme court and the European court of human rights (ECHR).

“There’s very clear case law on this in the ECHR, so it’s very likely it will be challenged soon after it’s implemented. But the court takes years, and the decisions are always individual. People will probably get compensation but it won’t mean they get new documents,” said Dombos.

Until 2016, the procedure for legally changing gender in Hungary was fairly straightforward, said Dombos, but for the past three years, authorities have been reluctant to implement the law, meaning there is a backlog of people waiting for decisions on their applications for gender changes. “My request has been sitting there for a year, and this new law will mean it will be fully rejected,” said Ördög.

Orbán’s government has become more hostile towards the LGBTQ+ community in the past two years, moving from generic language about traditional values and the benefits of heterosexual marriage to openly discriminatory language, such as comparing homosexuality to paedophilia.

“This kind of language was not present before, and now it is no longer just discourse, it’s going to become policy,” said Dombos.

Although it will still be possible for people to change their names, in Hungary there is an official register of allowed names compiled by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and this list is gendered. There are no names approved for both genders. “I cannot change my legal name to anything that doesn’t give me away as a trans person,” said Ördög.

Even without the new law, life for trans people in Hungary is filled with obstacles. Amanda Malovics, a 30-year-old trans woman, left Hungary in 2015 for London, with one suitcase and enough money to last a month, she said, as she felt uncomfortable starting her transition in Hungary.

In Britain she has changed her name by deed poll, which means that bank accounts, bills and the rest of her life in London can be conducted under her new name. As soon as she needs to travel, however, she is faced with using her Hungarian passport with her old name and gender. She applied to change her gender in Hungary last year but, like others, has had the application stalled.

“I live and breathe as a woman, I look like a woman, I am present in myself as a woman and I identify as a woman, but my ID says otherwise. I absolutely hate travelling, because of this. There’s massive fear and anxiety every time,” she said.

Now, she says, she is waiting until she qualifies for UK citizenship to receive a passport in her new name, and at that point will consider making the difficult decision to revoke her Hungarian citizenship. She believes many other Hungarian trans people will also leave.

“It’s pointless for me to belong somewhere where I’m not wanted or welcome,” she said.

  22. Leftist Groups Claim Anger of Rioters Across France ‘Legitimate’ (breitbart, Apr 26, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/04/26/leftist-groups-claim-anger-of-rioters-across-france-legitimate/

“A number of leftist groups, including political parties and trade unions, have signed a letter declaring the anger that led to the widespread riots over the last week in France is “legitimate.”

The letter, which is signed by the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) trade union, the Collective Against Islamophobia in France, Revolutionary Feminists, the Communist Party of Workers of France, and many others, claims the riots are an expression of “legitimate anger”.

Published on the Bondy Blog website, a blog formed after the 2005 Paris riots and catering toward the highly migrant-populated suburbs of France, the letter states that such areas are on the “front line” of the coronavirus outbreak.

“Racist discrimination, already unbearable, is reinforced by police impunity and violence and humiliation are increasing… We can add the discriminatory curfew imposed on the inhabitants of these neighbourhoods by the city of Nice,” the letter states.

“Inequalities and discrimination must be vigorously fought and abolished… we will take part in this just fight for equality, justice, and dignity,” they added.

Bondy Blog has previously been criticised by historian Guylain Chevrier following the “Theo Affair” in 2017 that saw widespread riots in and around Paris after a black male named Theo claimed police has brutally beat him and purposely inserted a baton into his rectum.

Mr Chevrier accused Bondy Blog of “pushing for violence” and said the site “systematically supports urban violence, disorders, whatever their causes, against police around which we cultivate hatred and through it, that of the State, of the Republic.”

The latest riots to spread across France began over the past weekend and have continued for several days with a number of police and firefighters attacked by youths in so-called “vulnerable” areas in towns and cities across the country despite strict lockdown measures to halt the spread of the Chinese coronavirus.”

  23. Former Senior CIA Officer Urges Reform of US Intelligence

Politicized senior intelligence officers, politicized intelligence, intelligence failures, and restructuring of US intelligence. All these topics are of tremendous importance to US national security. Recently I have written on how US intelligence is trying to confirm whether the Wuhan Coronavirus (COVID-19) leaked from a Chinese lab, but it has been slowed, in part, by the CIA’s ‘decimated’ clandestine intelligence networks in China. Yet, while US intelligence is facing many challenges abroad, the challenges within might be the most serious.

One retired 25-year veteran CIA officer is leading the fight to fix and reform US intelligence. Brad Johnson spent his entire CIA career fighting America’s enemies in the shadows, but after retiring he has a new mission — to depoliticize, rebuild and reform US intelligence.

To fulfill his new mission, Johnson — who retired as a Senior Operations Officer with the CIA’s Directorate of Operations and was Chief of Station (COS) at various US embassies — founded Americans for Intelligence Reform. As Johnson writes in American Military News (AMN):

  24. Israeli Professor Shows Virus Follows Fixed Pattern

Professor Yitzhak Ben Israel of Tel Aviv University, who also serves on the research and development advisory board for Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, plotted the rates of new coronavirus infections of the U.S., U.K., Sweden, Italy, Israel, Switzerland, France, Germany, and Spain. The numbers told a shocking story: irrespective of whether the country quarantined like Israel, or went about business as usual like Sweden, coronavirus peaked and subsided in the exact same way. In the exact, same, way. His graphs show that all countries experienced seemingly identical coronavirus infection patterns, with the number of infected peaking in the sixth week and rapidly subsiding by the eighth week.

    https://townhall.com/columnists/marinamedvin/2020/04/15/israeli-professor-shows-virus-follows-fixed-pattern-n2566915

    • That 8 week cycle is interesting, does this make it more likely to have been built in a lab or less likely?

We know the number of nasty infections with the quarantine, what would the number have been without the quarantine? What do the new models using the new data say? That is the question I never hear answered, unless that question is ask and answered you aren’t taking a complete look at the quarantine and you are makinig conclusion from inadequate data.

  29. CBC – Intelligence officials from U.S., South Korea say Kim Jong-un is alive

There has been speculation about the health of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, including rumours he may have died.

Intelligence officials from the United States and South Korea say he is alive.

Rumors are swirling about Kim Jong-un’s location and health.

These North Korea experts showed us how they collect information about his secretive regime.

    • Turkish Radio & Television – What happened to North Korea’s Kim Jong-un?

Speculations have spread on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s health and whereabouts, since April 15, when he failed to attend celebrations on the country’s biggest national holiday. Here are some of the rumours.

    • DAILY MAIL – Kim’s Alive! South Korea says despot Jong-un is NOT dead as defectors from his evil regime also say they believe he is still healthy

Foreign adviser Chung-in Moon said South Korea’s position is that Kim is alive
Aide said Kim had been living in the Wonsan area of the country since April 13
Vice director of Hong Kong Satellite Television said a source told her Kim died
Japanese media outlet claimed he was in ‘vegetative state’ after heart surgery
Moon’s comments appear to have poured cold water on the swirling rumours

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is ‘alive and well’, a South Korean official has said.

Foreign policy adviser Chung-in Moon said his government’s position is firmly that the despot is not dead.

The aide said Kim had been living in the Wonsan area of the country since April 13, adding to Fox: ‘No suspicious movements have so far been detected.’

Rumours of his death emerged from the vice director of Hong Kong Satellite Television Shijian Xingzou, who claimed a ‘very solid source’ told her Kim was dead.

She has 15million followers on Chinese social media Weibo, and is also the niece of one of the country’s foreign ministers.

Separately, a Japanese media outlet claimed Kim was in a ‘vegetative state’ after he underwent heart surgery earlier in the month.

The despot has not been seen publicly since April 11 when he led a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party committee of policy makers, North Korean state media said.

But Chung-in Moon’s comments appear to have poured cold water on the astonishing claims that he had passed away.

North Korean defectors agree, saying it is hard to believe the information would be leaked by his trusted aides.

Joo Sung-ha, a North Korean defector turned journalist, said in a Facebook post reported by the New York Times that it was reasonable to believe Kim had health problems, but that he had zero trust in reports why the leader has faced a medical emergency. ‘The health of the Kim family is the secret among secrets,’ he said.

Thae Yong-ho, a former North Korean diplomat who also defected, said it was hard to believe any reliable information about Kim had been leaked by his most trusted aids.

He said while he worked in the country no one was aware of Kim Jong-il’s death until 2011, when they gathered in an auditorium and saw an announcer dressed in black.

North Korea has never said who would succeed Kim if he died, but analysts believe his sister Kim Yo-Jong would likely take over until his children grow up.

The dictator’s 250-metre-long train has been seen near his Wonsan holiday complex on satellite images as recently as April 23, according to news website 38North.

It was parked at a station reserved for the Kim family. The website said although the dictator’s whereabouts remain unknown, the trains position suggests he has visited the resort.

The most recent photos, from April 23, show the train preparing for departure.

Kim’s private jet, frequently used for trips to Wonsan, remains on the runway in Pyongyang, South Korean broadcaster SBS reported.

The Wonsan complex includes nine large guesthouses and recreation centre, as well as a shooting range and covered dock believed to be for a yacht.

At the centre of the grounds is a large building that was constructed shortly after Kim Jong-un came to power in 2014.

US Senator Lindsey Graham added to speculation of his death, telling Fox News last night he believes reports on the leader’s health.

He said: ‘Well, it’s a closed society, I don’t know anything directly. But I’d be shocked if he’s not dead or in some incapacitated state because you don’t let rumours like this go forever or go unanswered in a closed society, which is really a cult, not a country, called North Korea.

‘So I pretty well believe he is dead or incapacitated.

And I hope the long-suffering North Korean people will get some relief if he is dead, and President Trump’s willing to do business with North Korea in a win-win fashion.

‘So, if this guy is dead, I hope the next person who takes over will work with President Trump to make North Korea a better place for everybody.’

Senator Graham has regularly made comments on the state of North Korea’s regime and is seen as an influential policy adviser to President Trump.

He has praised the President’s handling of the North Korea crisis and decision to hold talks aimed at denuclearising the peninsula.

Graham’s declarations followed the news that Kim Jon-Un had failed to appear for a national holiday – Military Foundation Day – on Saturday.

Despite the suspect absence, a senior Pentagon official said US intelligence had found no sign of unusual military activity in North Korea that would suggest something was awry.

An anonymous source told Newsweek: ‘Regional militarizes in the Western Pacific and Asia, including those of our partner nations, remain at readiness levels consistent with historical norms.

‘We have observed no indications or received any additional information to make a conclusive assessment on the status of North Korean leadership or health of Kim Jong-un.’

The official said the Pentagon continues to monitor the situation very closely, but also remarked speculations surrounding Kim’s health may not be completely unfounded.

Citing the presence of the dictator’s train at his Wonsan compound and his uncharacteristic failure to attend two major national events, the official claimed there is ‘certainly credibility to report that [Kim] is either in a serious health condition or potentially deceased.

The official added: ‘Since he is perceived as a deity in NK, his death would instantly trigger nationwide indications, so there is potential that the government had delayed an announcement in order to have everything in place to maintain security across the country.’

Chung-in Moon was not the only one to downplay speculation about his death.

US President Donald Trump also downplayed reports Kim was gravely ill on April 23.

‘I think the report was incorrect,’ Trump told reporters, but he declined to say if he had been in touch with North Korean officials.

  30. Michael Moore stumbles upon the truth about so-called ‘green’ energy
    By Andrea Widburg

Michael Moore is worried about Earth, although he’s not focused on fossil fuel and cow farts. Instead, he’s worried because he just discovered that green energy is a scam. That’s the point in his new documentary, Planet of the Humans, which was released Tuesday for free on YouTube. In a long and poorly written introduction on the YouTube page, the people who made the video explain that the green revolution could have worked out if only the whole movement hadn’t sold itself out to the rich and powerful, resulting in a sham and a scam.

  31. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is facing rising criticism over a controversial directive in March requiring the state’s nursing homes to accept coronavirus patients from hospitals, when few had the equipment or training to deal with those patients.

The directive, dated March 25, stated (original emphasis): “No resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to the NH [nursing home] solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19. NHs are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.”

The New York Times reported Friday that “California, New Jersey and New York have made nursing homes accept Covid-19 patients from hospitals.” The Times added: “Although there is no evidence so far that the practice has allowed infections to spread in nursing homes, many residents and advocates fear that it is only a matter of time.”

  32. UK: Dozens More Illegal Boat Migrants Brought Ashore Despite Coronavirus (breitbart, Apr 26, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/04/26/uk-dozens-more-illegal-boat-migrants-brought-ashore-despite-coronavirus/

“Dozens of illegal boat migrants were brought ashore at Dover after being intercepted in the English Channel by the Border Force, despite coronavirus outbreaks in migrant camps in France.

On Friday, the Border Force brought ashore 76 migrants attempting to cross the Channel in five small boats. There were 55 men and 21 women on the boats, who claim to be from Iraq, Iran, Yemen, and Kuwait.

An estimated 400 boat migrants successfully reached British shores in April, the highest amount of illegal crossings ever recorded in one month. Fears of coronavirus outbreaks within the migrant camps at Calais and Dunkirk are believed to be driving the increase in migrant crossings.

In response to the fears that migrants are importing the Wuhan virus, Dover MP, Natalie Elphicke said that migrants attempting to cross the Channel should immediately be sent back to France or at least face mandatory quarantines upon arriving in England.

“France’s lockdown means people need permission just to walk the dog. So how come hundreds of migrants can still pile into small boats and illegally motor into Britain?” Elphicke asked in comments reported in the Daily Mail.

“We know that the coronavirus has infected the French camps,” she said.

“The French have been paid tens of millions of pounds [by British taxpayers] to stop these dangerous journeys being made — it’s vital the Home Office make the French honour their obligations in order to stop the further spread of the virus into Britain.

“Given the public health risk, anyone arriving who is not returned must be immediately quarantined for 14 days to protect public health – and safeguard the Port of Dover’s vital role in supplying the nation with food and medicines,” Elphicke concluded.

Since the beginning of the year, an estimated 831 migrants have successfully crossed the Channel into Britain, four times as many as were recorded during the same time period last year.

Attempting to enter the country illegally by boat or other means does not guarantee that a migrant will face deportation, as in Australia.

Those who are brought ashore are given the opportunity to apply for asylum, in line with the European Union regulations which Britain is still bound by during the Brexit transition period, and the Home Office admitted that just 155 illegal boat migrants have been deported back to Europe since January of 2019 — a very small percentage of those who have arrived.

The leader of the Brexit Party, Nigel Farage said of the latest migrant crossings: “This continuing flow of illegal migrants makes many of us very angry. What will [Home Secretary Priti Patel] do about it?”

The Home Secretary has consistently said that she is “determined” to end the illegal crossings, but there is no indication that the government will begin to immediately send boat migrants to France — a safe, first world state far from any conflict zones — rather than bringing them ashore as usual.”
