Reader’s Links for February 10, 2020

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Greta Thunberg Gets TV Series From BBC Studios

Series will follow life of teenage environmental activist

BBC Studios is making a TV show with 17-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The project was announced at the BBC Showcase trade show on Monday. No network, release date or number of episodes have yet been set.

Here is the description for the series, which comes from the studio’s science unit.

“The series will follow Greta’s international crusade, which takes her to the front line of climate change in some of the most extraordinary places on earth, as she explores what actions could be taken to limit climate change and the damage it causes.

As she travels Greta meets not only leading scientists but political leaders and business heavyweights, exploring the scientific evidence with them and challenging them to change.

The films will also charts her own journey into adulthood as she continues to be confronted by the real world consequences of inaction; and will share some of the quiet moments as she writes the impactful speeches that are now broadcast and analysed around the world, as she lives a teenage life like no other.”

Thunberg appeared in a video presentation last night at the 92nd Oscars, speaking on the power of documentaries. In the clip, she had a conversation with filmmaker David Attenborough, who she says inspired her to participate in climate-change advocacy.

“Climate change is probably the most important issue of our lives so it feels timely to make an authoritative series that explores the facts and science behind this complex subject,” Rob Liddell, who will produce the series, said in a statement. “To be able to do this with Greta is an extraordinary privilege, gettingan inside view on what it’s like being a global icon and one of the most famous faces on the planet.”

A NOTORIOUS jihadist has been preaching hate to an army of followers on YouTube just days after the Streatham terror attack, it can be revealed today.

Shakil Chapra,46, is an associate of ISIS recruiter Anjem Choudary and featured in the infamous Channel 4 documentary The Jihadis Next Door where he was seen calling for gay people to be thrown from buildings.

And the Sun Online can today reveal how the firebrand preacher – better known online as Abu Haleema – has been uploading new sermons to his YouTube channel.

In a video posted on Wednesday, just days after the Streatham terror attack he claimed to followers that a passage of the Koran says: “We will strike terror into the hearts of the kuffar [non-Muslims].

“We will strike terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve!”

In it, he recounts a story from the Koran about beheading non-believers.

Violent felon on parole accused of ambushing New York City police officers

Suspect to arraigned on attempted murder charges after witnesses say he opened fire inside a New York City police station just hours after targeting officers on patrol; Alex Hogan reports from the Bronx.

A police union says the men and women of New York City’s finest are now “declaring war” on Mayor Bill de Blasio following a pair of shootings targeting officers in the Bronx over the weekend.

The fiery rhetoric directed at the Big Apple’s Democrat leader — who has implemented several measures critics say are hostile to police – comes as the NYPD filed charges against suspect Robert Williams in both attacks.

“Mayor De Blasio, the members of the NYPD are declaring war on you!” the Sergeants Benevolent Association wrote in a tweet. “We do not respect you, DO NOT visit us in hospitals. You sold the NYPD to the vile creatures, the 1% who hate cops but vote for you.

  6. A pair of Russian satellites are tailing a multibillion-dollar U.S. spy satellite hundreds of miles above the Earth’s surface, a top U.S. military commander tells TIME, underscoring a growing threat to America’s dominance in space-based espionage and a potentially costly new chapter in Washington’s decades-long competition with Moscow.

Gen. John “Jay” Raymond, commander of the newly minted U.S. Space Force, says the Russian spacecraft began maneuvering toward the American satellite shortly after being launched into orbit in November, at times creeping within 100 miles of it. “We view this behavior as unusual and disturbing,” Raymond says. “It has the potential to create a dangerous situation in space.” Raymond says the U.S. government has expressed concern to Moscow through diplomatic channels.

  7. After Removing Vindman Trump Scrubs 70 Obama Holdovers From NSC – Schumer Demands Investigation

Army Lt. Col Alexander Vindman was escorted off the White House grounds and dismissed from the National Security Council Friday afternoon, according to reports. His twin brother Army Lt. Col. Yevgeny Vindman, who served as a lawyer on the NSC was also fired and left with Alex.

President Trump continued to drain the swamp as of last Friday he fired Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, just hours after firing Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the National Security Council official who testified at House impeachment proceedings against the commander-in-chief.

Like Vindman, Sondland testified at the impeachment proceedings.

But it seems that this isn’t the end.

Officials confirmed that Trump and national security adviser Robert O’Brien have cut 70 positions inherited from former President Barack Obama, who had fattened the staff to 200.

  9. During a Monday morning phone conversation, the Virginia State Police public relations department did not rule out knocking doors to enforce a suppressor ban.

Breitbart News called the Virginia State Police and noted Democrats are passing legislation to ban various firearm accessories. We specifically mentioned the suppressor ban which is currently moving through the state legislature and asked if, “Virginia State Police will go door-to-door to get those.”

The public relations official did not respond with a direct answer “yes” or “no” on going door-to-door. Rather, she said, “[No laws] have gone into effect, no laws have been formalized or finalized.”

She said they do not, “do the speculation because nothing’s been passed into formal law,” but made clear that their job is to “enforce and comply with the laws” once they are on the books.

On February 9, 2020, Breitbart News reported the legislation banning suppressors was passed by Democrats in the House of Delegates Public Safety Committee. The Washington Examiner reported the ban is expected to pass in the full House, and from there it moves to the Virginia Senate.

  10. A prominent German newspaper has admitted that the majority of migrants who make their way to Europe from across the Mediterranean sea are not legitimate refugees.

In a piece last week, Marcel Leubecher, a political editor for the popular daily German newspaper Die Welt, noted the significant uptick in the number of migrants arriving in Italy from across the Mediterranean.

In January, 1275 boat migrants arrived in Italy, including migrants that made it to shore by themselves without the help of NGOs. Leubecher then notes that number of migrants who arrived by boat has been “above the previous year’s figure every month since Septemeber.”

“Contrary to popular belief, the majority of those arriving in Italy are not refugees. The main countries of origin for boat migrants in January were Algeria, Ivory Coast, and Bangladesh according to the Italian Ministry of the Interior,” Leubecher wrote.

  11. It was December 7. Suzanne A. was delighted to introduce her family to this wonderful little restaurant. She had been there ten times. As a family, it was going to be the first time. For Danielle, her little sister’s birthday party, it was perfect.

There were eight of them that afternoon: his brothers and sisters and their respective spouses.

Because the restaurant is a “bring your own wine”, they also had four bottles of wine.

It was also a “bring your cake” that day: when Suzanne had made the reservation two weeks earlier, the owner had agreed that they would bring a cake for Danielle’s party.

Suzanne is therefore among the first to arrive. It is the owner’s wife who welcomes them. She recognizes the owner, who is passing the mop.

The guests arrive little by little. The bottles should be opened, someone says, at the table…

The owner’s wife, who wears the hijab, opens the bottles. But she warns the group: at half past twelve, I will have to remove the bottles and glasses …

Consternation in Suzanne’s table: take away the wine, but why?

Explanations from the owner’s wife: there is a group that made a reservation, very religious Muslims, they do not want there to be wine in the restaurant…

“She was nervous, she felt bad,” recalls Suzanne.

The group rebelled, no question of accepting such a diktat. They tried to parley (without success), to have explanations from the owner (unavailable, dixit his wife) and to propose compromises (depositing the bottles on the ground), nothing helps.

Jean-Pierre A.: “I saw the table, the table of the other group. She was in another section, far from ours. They wouldn’t have seen us, where they were from … ”

    • It sounds as though it might be a Halal-certified restaurant and the owner did not want to risk losing certification, should somene at the other table do a pre-authorized inspection. The owner wants to have her cake and eat it, too: the place should have had a sign posted outside it that no food or drink may be brought in.

    West Point Tackles ‘Toxic Masculinity’

“I’m being taught how not to be a man.”
    February 10, 2020
    Mark Tapson

If you are a good, committed cultural Marxist and your mission is to help dismantle the cultural, economic, and power structures in the capitalist West from within, how do you undertake such a grand task? How do you subvert an entire civilization? You undermine its foundations, and the most basic building block of all is the nuclear family. To deconstruct the family successfully, you must subvert masculinity, because masculinity is the warrior spirit of that nuclear family. To emasculate a civilization, you indoctrinate its youth to believe that the natural traits typically associated with masculinity – such as aggression, competitiveness, and emotional self-control – are poisonous to society and even to boys and men themselves. You convince men – especially society’s warriors – to reject their very nature altogether.

This January, cadets at West Point, the United States Military Academy, were required to attend educational events for “Honorable Living Day,” the academy’s third such day hosted during the short tenure of Superintendent Lt. Gen. Darryl A. Williams. The first was held last February and focused on eliminating sexual assault and harassment at the academy, which has been co-ed since 1976. The second, held last semester, called upon cadets, staff and faculty to improve the culture in order to combat sexual assault further.

At this most recent Honorable Living Day, the goal was to “expand the discussion beyond sexual assault and talk about how all aspects of the community can come together and promote an atmosphere of honorable living to include diversity, inclusion and acceptance of people from differing backgrounds, races and genders.” Lt. Gen. Williams described the curriculum as being “connected” to improving combat readiness.

  14. In China, the Doctor Who Warned About the Coronavirus Was An Enemy of the People

And was crushed – just like enemies of the people in the West.
    February 10, 2020
    Robert Spencer

Li Wenliang, 34, the doctor in Wuhan, China who warned about the coronavirus, has died of the virus, after becoming an enemy of the people in China for sounding that warning. USA Today reported Friday that “Li had already become a national hero for alerting fellow doctors Dec. 30 in an online post about the emergence of a SARS-like illness, warning them to wear protective clothing to avoid infection. Li, along with seven others in Wuhan, were later arrested by local security police on charges of spreading rumors and forced to sign a document disavowing his statements and agreeing to quit speaking out.” You probably didn’t realize how much the People’s Republic of China was like the U.S. today, did you?

No, I am not referring to President Trump dubbing the establishment media the Enemy of the People. Their smug elitism, contempt for the American people, or at least for those in flyover country, and their fawning support for all the enemies of the United States make that appellation abundantly justified. There is no sense whatsoever in which those craven and dishonest hacks are like Li Wenliang – that is, someone who called attention to a genuine problem and was punished for doing so by authorities whose sole concern was the bottom line.

  15. Trump vs. Sanders Will Be MAGA vs. Anti-MAGA Election

Bernie Sanders supporters don’t believe in God or America.

What is inside the soul of a Bernie Sanders supporter?

As the socialist senator from Vermont becomes a serious candidate for the nomination, even if he never gets there, it’s important to investigate what is fueling this radical transformation of the Democrats.

A new Pew survey provides us with some valuable insights into what makes Sanders supporters tick.

The Sanders base is irreligious, whether agnostic, atheistic, or unaffiliated with any major religion.

While Sanders is, like Karl Marx, of Jewish ancestry, he has never been a practicing Jew. Instead, he has spent the bulk of his career aligning with anti-Semitic figures. His deputy press secretary had accused the “American Jewish community” of treason. He regularly campaigns with racists like John Cusack who tweeted an anti-Semitic Nazi meme. Bernie doesn’t like Jews, and Jews don’t like Bernie.

  18. Busted: Secretary of State Pompeo Speaks to US Governors – Says China Has a List of Sell-Out Governors and He Has Seen It (VIDEO)
Jim Hoft by Jim Hoft February 10, 2020 375 Comments

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke to the National Governors Association last week. During his speech Pompeo told the governors that China is keeping a list of the governors and China is rating US governors as “friendly, hardline, or ambiguous.” China knows who is “friendly” and who have sold out.

Then Secretary Pompeo dropped this bomb, “Last year a Chinese government-backed think tank in Beijing produced a report that assessed all fifty of America’s governors on their attitudes toward China. They labeled each of you friendly, hardline, or ambiguous. I’ll let you decide where you think you belong, someone in China already has. Many of you, indeed, in that report, are referenced by name. So here’s the lesson. The lesson is that the competition with China is not just a federal issue which is why I wanted to be here today.”

    Pompeo has seen the list.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control of the United States Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions against CONVIASA, a Venezuelan airline with its headquarters near Caracas .

According to Steven Mnuchin, the regime uses the state airline to move corrupt officials around the world to boost support for its criminal organization. The Trump Administration will not allow the regime to continue robbing people and abusing state assets.

Also, the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, explained that Maduro and his corrupt cronies use Venezuela’s state owned airline to support their illegal regime.

Alexander Vindman came off as more loyal to Ukraine than his oath to the United States and that he should face an Article 15 or court martial for his conduct. Gohmert made the comments in an interview on the WMAL-AM/FM Mornings On The Mall show with hosts Mary Walter and Vince Coglianese broadcast in the Nation’s Capital.

Liberals have declared Monday Lt. Col. Vindman Day and started a hashtag, #LtColVindmanDay, to support him. Until Friday Vindman, a refugee from Ukraine, had helmed the Ukraine desk at the National Security Council in the White House.

  25. Pakistan Summons Indian Diplomat Over Alleged Cross Border Firings on Civilians (sputniknews, Feb 10, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/military/202002101078277257-pakistan-summons-indian-diplomat-over-alleged-cross-border-firings-on-civilians/

“Pakistan has summoned an Indian diplomat in Islamabad three times in one week over ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC). The armies of the two nuclear-armed nations have been shelling each other along the border for the past few weeks and casualties are reported on both sides.

The Pakistan Foreign Ministry summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner Gaurav Ahluwalia on Monday, accusing New Delhi of targeting civilians across the Line of Control (LoC), the de-facto border between the two countries in the Kashmir region.

This is the second summoning of an Indian diplomat in three days.

The Pakistan ministry, in a statement, claimed that civilians are being injured in border villages located along the LoC, adding that Islamabad has lodged a “strong protest at ceasefire violations by India along LoC in Jabbar, Sandhara, Sumbal Gali and Dabsi villages of Kotli district”.

Due to the “indiscriminate and unprovoked firing by the Indian forces” at least 10 civilians have been injured, the Pakistan Foreign Ministry’s statement noted.

On Saturday, Pakistan accused Indian security forces of killing one civilian in the Chirikot sector, along the LoC.

The media arm of the Pakistan Armed Forces claimed that Indian troops over the last 24 hours have resorted to unprovoked fire with mortars and heavy weapons in the Jandrot and Nikial sectors along the LoC, deliberately targeting the civilian population.

“Pakistan army troops responded effectively to Indian unprovoked cease fire violations. One Indian soldier killed, three injured, including a Major, while substantial damage inflicted on Indian posts which initiated fire,” the Pakistan armed forces Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) media wing said.

A Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that by raising tensions along the LoC and the Working Boundary, India cannot divert attention from the worsening human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan has called upon India to respect the 2003 Ceasefire agreement and maintain peace along the border.

The Indian defence ministry on Monday accused Pakistan of firing at Indian villagers during 2019. As per details released by the defence ministry, there were 3,479 incidences of Pakistani security personnel firing at India in 2019. The Pakistan army accused India for violating ceasefire agreements in over 3000 incidences in 2019.

“Very often terrorists attempting to carry out reconnaissance to facilitate infiltration also become casualties and these are then depicted as civilian casualties to portray India’s action as being aggressive, thus attempting to draw attention of international media and divert attention from terrorist support provided to Pak proxies and terrorists trained by Pakistan,” Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh suggested at parliament on Monday.

Relations between India and Pakistan have traditionally been tense over competing claims to parts of the Kashmir region, since the countries gained independence from the British Empire in 1947.

The two sides have been engaged in continuous firing on the border since February 2019, after the Indian Air Force allegedly destroyed the Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp in Balakot inside Pakistan. Pakistan, in a retaliatory action, reportedly brought down an Indian MiG jet and captured its pilot, who was later released. The Indian Air Force claimed it downed an F-16 in the process.”

    • Pay close attention to this one, this man has spend a long time thinking about what is happening and what would happen if China invades. I can’t find any mistakes in what he is saying, and since he is a lot closer to the Mainland then we are he has a much better grasp on the Mainland’s economy and on how good their military is. He makes a very good point about how neither China nor the Mainland have fought a war in a long time, both sides will be fighting a training war as they fight for (Taiwan) survival and (the mainland) conquest. The lack of blood troops to be in leadership positoins will make the butchers bill a lot higher for both sides.

“Sardines” rally in Bologna. (Andreas Solaro, for AFP.)

“?lea iacta est” — “The die has been cast” — Julius Caesar.

My heart sank when I saw the flash mob, nicknamed the Sardines, crowding the 15th-century Piazza Maggiore in Bologna to oppose Matteo Salvini’s Lega campaign launch in the PalaDozza, waving their banners and chanting their slogan: “Bologna non si Lega!” The allegedly grassroots political movement decided to take a stand against the League and its charismatic leader in the Emilia-Romagna district, an area that has long been a fervent Communist stronghold since the time of the Second World War.

TV commentators compared the phenomenon — which drew 7,000 onto the streets of Modena, 25,000 to the Piazza Duomo in Milan, 30,000 to the Piazza della Repubblica in Florence, 10,000 to the Piazza San Giovanni in Rome, 40,000 to the Piazza Castello in Turin, and many more to demonstrations staged in Naples and Palermo — to the Girotondi and Purple People who had marched against Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in the past.

But this was much more uniformly organized and far better orchestrated. It’s as if the people behind it had mastered the art of choreographing a spontaneous outburst of indignation through the experience they had already gained during the various Colored Revolutions the world has witnessed over the last few decades.

Indeed, in Rome, the Sardines’ thin-faced and floppy-haired de facto leader, Mattia Santori, lived up to his probable paymaster’s expectations by demanding that Giuseppe Conte’s government condemn hate speech, withdraw laws that placed barriers in the way of migrants coming to Europe, and welcomed the return of the Open Seas initiative facilitating relatively easy transit between North Africa and Italian ports for so-called refugees, which was temporarily stopped by Salvini’s government.

It’s the very same multicultural agenda that George Soros so generously sponsors through his Open Society Foundations and their adjuncts like the Central European University. The faculty there would no doubt choose to suspend the capability of sovereign countries to deport dangerous immigrants, and prefer instead for the EU in Brussels to create new protections for those very same people — principles that underpinned very similar protests in Paris, Brussels, and Berlin.

AG Barr launches Presidential Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice

Commission launched to address problems plaguing law enforcement; panel reaction and analysis.

Charging that so-called “sanctuary” cities that protect illegal immigrants are jeopardizing domestic security, Attorney General Bill Barr announced a slew of additional sanctions that he called a “significant escalation” against left-wing local and state governments that obstruct the “lawful functioning of our nation’s immigration system.”

Speaking at the National Sheriff’s Association 2020 Winter Legislative and Technology Conference in Washington, D.C., Barr said the Justice Department would immediately file multiple lawsuits against sanctuary jurisdictions for unconstitutionally interfering with federal immigration enforcement, and implement unprecedented national reviews of left-wing sanctuary governments and prosecutors.

“The department is filing a complaint against the State of New Jersey seeking declaratory and injunctive relief against its laws that forbid state and local law enforcement from sharing vital information about criminal aliens with DHS,” Barr said.

That was a reference to New Jersey Attorney General Law Enforcement Directive 2018-6, which the DOJ says illegally bars officials from sharing the immigration status and release dates of individuals in custody. It also requires New Jersey law enforcement to “promptly notify a detained individual, in writing and in a language the individual can understand” if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) files an immigration detainer request for the individual.

“We are filing a complaint seeking declaratory and injunctive relief against King County, Washington, for the policy … that forbids DHS from deporting aliens from the United States using King County International Airport,” Barr continued.

    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/2124726/ecuador-arrests-iranians-travelling-fake-israeli-passports

“Authorities in the Ecuadorian capital Quito arrested two Iranians who were attempting to travel to Spain using fake Israeli passports.

According to news reports, the pair – a man and woman in their 20s – attempted to leave the South American country for the Spanish capital Madrid but were discovered to be in possession of forged travel documents, which used personal information of two Israelis.

The Iranians reportedly arrived in Ecuador using fake passports at the end of last month and attempted to travel a few days ago.

Their original Iranian passports were also found in their possession. It is unclear why they were holding fake passports or whether they were affiliated to Iran’s intelligence services, although it might be because an Israel passport holder does not require an entry visa to visit Ecuador.

In March of last year, Argentinian authorities apprehended two Iranians with forged Israeli passports that “were riddled with spelling mistakes in Hebrew”, according to local media at the time.”

  31. Iranians Feel Strain of Turmoil and Sanctions
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/2124716/iranians-feel-strain-turmoil-and-sanctions

“On a crisp winter’s day the snow glistens on the mountains above Tehran, but the mood is as heavy as the pall of pollution that often shrouds Iran’s capital.

In a country weighed down by sanctions, shaken by protests and stressed by military tensions with the United States, many Tehranis struggle to hide their pessimism.

“Life is really hard right now. The situation here is unpredictable,” said Rana, a 20-year-old biology student walking in the upmarket district of Tajrish.

It is a part of the city where young women subtly thwart the Islamic republic’s conservative dress codes, opting for short coats, stylish make-up and scarves revealing ever more hair.

But, despite such relative liberties, Rana said she feels trapped.

“The quality of life isn’t good at all — we have pollution, angry people, high prices,” she said, pointing also to a “huge class gap” and Iran’s deepening “isolation”.

Iran’s economy has been battered since US President Donald Trump in 2018 abandoned an international nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions and a “maximum pressure” campaign.

When Iran hiked petrol prices in November, nationwide protests erupted and turned violent before security forces put them down amid a near-total internet blackout.

Tensions with Washington escalated in early January when a US drone strike killed powerful Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad.

Iran retaliated by targeting US forces but then accidentally shot down a Ukrainian airliner, killing all 176 people on board, in a tragedy that sparked anger at home and abroad.

Rana said she still feels “sad” about the disaster that claimed the lives of many young people who had left Iran to study abroad.

    – ‘Angry with Trump’ –

One young Iranian who has chosen to stay in her country is Pegah Golami, a 25-year-old engineer who was shopping three days ahead of her wedding.

“The country’s economic condition is now really difficult, especially for youths,” she said, dressed in a chic coat and suede boots.

“I feel very bad… my friends have decided to leave. But I, as an Iranian, decided to stay and build my country.”

The strains of a violin filled the air as a busker tried to make himself heard above the noise of the heavy traffic.

The economic situation is also hurting Mohammadreza Khademi, vice-president of the Delham Tabesh company that sells smart technology devices from Italy for luxury homes.

His company took a hit after the renewed sanctions tripled costs, forcing it to lay off 20 of its 30 employees.

“The end of 2018 was awful and all of 2019 was not good at all,” said Mohammadreza.

“I will continue to run my business. I will try to have that line of production in Iran locally, but it is super difficult to change,” he said, adding that “I am angry with Mr. Trump”.

    – ‘We feel hopeless’ –

If the mood is glum in Tehran’s middle and upper-class districts, it’s even worse in the poorer areas of the sprawling city of eight million people.

In the southern district of Molavi, a melange of architectural styles gives way to a maze of alleyways and shops where craftsmen practice time-honored trades.

Only a few women are seen on the streets, most of them dressed in chadors and many carrying freshly baked flatbread.

Mehdi Golzadeh, a businessman who imports goods from Asia, looked exhausted as he walked out of a grocery store.

“Living in Iran has become very hard. With this economic situation, one can’t import anything, and Iran doesn’t have the materials” needed to make such products, he said.

“I am single… One can’t start a family on this meager income. We feel hopeless.”

Akbar Gharibvand, a 50-year-old shop-owner and father of five, said his income is “just enough to eat and survive”.”

    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200210-us-forces-to-start-withdrawing-from-15-bases-in-iraq/

“US forces have started to withdraw from 15 bases across Iraq according to a report by Sky News Arabia.

France, Germany and Australia have also submitted requests to the joint special operations command to set up the withdrawal of their own forces from the country, the chair of the Iraqi parliamentary defence committee, Badr Al-Ziyadi, is reported to have said by Bloomberg.

“The next government is responsible for setting a timetable, whether for the exit of foreign forces or the presence of military bases in some areas, especially in the Kurdistan region,” added Al-Ziyadi. “There is no movement or sorties of the coalition forces at the moment.”

However, a correspondent for Israel’s state-owned Kan tweeted that a US official told him the reports were not accurate and that the US is “continuing our fight with the Iraqi military against [ISIS]”.

The report follows the claim by Ali Akbar Velayati, the senior foreign policy adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Saturday that the American era in the region, especially in Syria and Iraq, has come to an end.

Velayati’s comments were made during a ceremony commemorating the 40th day after the assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani of the Quds Force, which he said paved the way for the imminent US withdrawal from the region…”

  35. Erdo?an: Social media has turned into trash
    https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/erdogan-social-media-has-turned-into-trash-151917

“Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an on Feb. 10 slammed the “irresponsible” use of social media, dubbing it as an “idle” platform.

“The responsible use of internet has been gaining more importance. Technology addiction is only one of these threats. Today, we face crowds who turned into modern slaves due to technology addiction,” Erdo?an said.

“We want to see individuals who use technology with freedom and awareness; we do not want to see modern slaves,” he added.

The president’s remarks came during a speech at the inauguration ceremony of “National Computer Emergency Response Center.”

“In this sense, social media has become garbage and an idle platform,” he said.

Erdo?an also vowed to protect Turkey against the complications of irresponsible social media use, where people “get harassed, defrauded and slandered.”

“Turkey will never surrender to a virtual world where [people’s] rights are being violated,” he underlined.

He added that offenses in the cyberworld should get penalties like they do in the real world.

“We need to strengthen our people’s bonds with the real life,” he said.

“We truly have productive, qualified and active youngsters. We expect our youth to use the potential the internet provides in the best way,” he said.

Erdo?an also urged the younger generation to produce “useful content.”

He said that the government will provide the necessary support to “turn the information the youth gathered from the internet, into a product.”

Erdo?an also said that with the newly established cyber security center, Turkey aims to be one of the top players in the matter.

For that, qualified experts are needed and an academy to train officials has also been established, he said.

“We are doing the necessary works for [the academy] whose doors are open to all our youth, without ant prerequisites,” he said. “We are discovering qualified young people.”

Erdo?an also said that attempting to put up a fight against cyberattacks with conventional methods will not yield concrete results.

“It’s like trying to use paper as a shield against a bullet,” he said.

“That’s why we kicked off the national technology move. We are using every means available for indigenous and progressive technologies to embrace every institution and individual,” he added.

    136,000 cyberattacks in 2019

Underlining the importance on the struggle against the complications of the virtual world, Erdo?an said that Turkey is one of the most targeted countries in cyberattacks.

According to the figures the president provided, the number of cyberattacks exceeded 136,000 in 2019. He conveyed that this figure was 9,000 in 2016.

These attacks are not on the individual level, but directed against the state, he stressed.

“We need to attach more importance to the security dimension of this issue. Otherwise we will hand in our critical systems to others and will not be able to prevent our country from becoming a technology garbage,” Erdo?an said.”

  36. 44 irregular migrants held in Aegean Turkey
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/44-irregular-migrants-held-in-aegean-turkey/1730092

“Turkish security forces on Monday held 44 irregular migrants attempting to cross into Europe through the country’s Aegean Balikesir province, said security sources.

Patrolling in the Aegean, Turkish Coast Guard teams noticed a group of people trying to get to the Greek island of Lesbos, and intercepted their boat and held the migrants, said the sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Among the migrants were nationals of Afghanistan, Somalia, Gambia, Togo, and Mali. They were later transferred to provincial migration offices for legal processing.

In 2019, Turkish authorities held nearly 455,000 irregular migrants across the country, including about 60,000 trying to cross the Mediterranean.

As many as 268,000 irregular migrants were held in Turkey in 2018, 175,000 each in 2017 and 2016, and 146,000 in 2015.

About 28,000 human traffickers have also been rounded up by the authorities in the past five years.”

  37. Human Rights Watch urges Mali to investigate massacres
    https://www.france24.com/en/20200210-human-rights-watch-urges-mali-to-investigate-massacres

“Human Rights Watch on Monday called on Mali to bring to justice jihadist and ethnic militants who killed more than 450 people in the centre of the war-torn country last year.

Massacres committed in the centre of the West African country amounted to “the deadliest year for civilians” since 2012, the NGO said in a report.

Mali has been struggling to contain an Islamist insurgency that erupted in the north in 2012, and which has claimed thousands of military and civilian lives.

Despite the presence of foreign troops, the conflict has since spread to the centre of the country as well as neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger.

Human Rights Watch pointed to the ethnic mosaic of central Mali as the “epicentre” of violence in the country.

“Armed groups are killing, maiming, and terrorizing communities throughout central Mali with no apparent fear of being held to account,” said report author Corinne Dufka in a statement.

Ethnic killings increased in central Mali following the emergence of the Katiba Macina group in 2015.

Led by jihadist preacher Amadou Koufa, Katiba Macina has recruited mainly from among the Fulani people and has been accused of ethnically-motivated attacks.

Other ethnic groups such as the Bambara or the Dogon have formed self-defence groups, which have in turn been accused of reprisal massacres.

Fourteen Fulani people were killed in central Mali in January, for example, in an apparent spate of ethnic violence.

Interviewing 147 victims or witnesses to attacks, Human Rights Watch said that at least 456 people were killed in central Mali last year, and hundreds more were wounded.

It said while Malian authorities convicted about 45 people for “smaller incidents of communal violence,” they had yet to question or prosecute the leaders of armed groups.

“The Malian government’s failure to punish armed groups on all sides is emboldening them to commit further atrocities,” Dufka said in a statement.”
