Moscow is helping Syrian Jews renovate their holy sites in the war-torn country, Russian President Vladimir Putin said this week, despite the fact that no Jews are known to live there and there is no formal community.
“We also help representatives of Judaism, we help Jews also in the restoration of their shrines in Syria, and we are in fact cooperating with them on an ongoing basis,” he said during a press conference in Budapest. He was responding to a reporter’s question about what the Kremlin is doing to improve the situation of Christians in the Middle East.

‘Her whole body shook’: Photo of 5-year-old cowering amid rockets goes viral
A photo of a five-year-old girl from Sderot cowering on the floor of her home as rockets rained down on her community went viral over the weekend, signifying to many the lasting trauma that years of repeated rocket barrages have done to innocents living near the border.
Sara Dahan, a 22-year-old single mother, posted the photo of her daughter Tahel online. She said her niece had accidentally taken it as the family gathered in the home’s protected space.
“My daughter! My own personal joy! The little girl who I promised to protect froze in place and simply would not move even though she was in the shielded room,” she wrote, referring to fortified concrete rooms that are mandatory in modern Israeli homes.
“Her whole body shook, she locked up on the floor and didn’t move, with her hands on her head. My girl, I’m so sorry you need to go through this.”
The photo was quickly shared on social media, with many expressions of sympathy towards the family as well as the impossible situation faced by residents of southern communities.

The time has come to seek a way out of the euro trap. There is a harmful dogma that the euro was the “normal” next step towards unifying western Europe. But the common European currency was not normal at all, because almost none of the preconditions were met.
Two decades after the euro’s launch, most of the necessary pillars of a successful global currency — a common state, a budget covering at least 15-20 per cent of the eurozone’s total gross domestic product, a eurozone finance minister and a ministry to go with the post — are still missing.
We rarely admit the real roots of the ill-advised decision to create the common currency: it was a French snare. As Germany unified, François Mitterrand, then French president, feared growing German power and believed convincing the country to give up its Deutschemark would be enough to avoid a German Europe. The chancellor of the time, Helmut Kohl, gave in and considered the euro the ultimate price for a unified Germany.
They were both wrong. We now have a European Germany, not a German Europe, and the euro was unable to prevent the emergence of another strong German power.
But the Germans also fell into the trap of the “too good to be true” euro. The inclusion of southern European economies in the eurozone led to an exchange rate that was weak enough to allow the Germans to become the strongest global export machine in the EU. This windfall opportunity made them complacent. They neglected to upgrade their infrastructure or to invest enough in future industries. They missed the digital revolution, miscalculated the emergence of China and failed to build pan-European global companies. At the same time, companies like Allianz, Deutsche Bank and Bayer launched fruitless efforts to conquer Wall Street and the US.
Most eurozone countries fared better before the euro than they did with it. According to analysis by the Centre for European Policy, there have been few winners and many losers in the first two decades of the euro.
The common currency was not needed for European success stories before 1999 and the majority of eurozone member states did not benefit from it later. During the 2008 financial crisis and the 2011-12 eurozone economic crisis, most members were badly hit, having piled up huge government debts. There is no free lunch and cheap loans often cost a lot later.
Alexandre Lamfalussy, the Hungarian-born economist, was right to tell us that a common currency was needed to strengthen the bond between European powers and defend the EU against the Soviets. There was only one snag: the final decision to create the euro was made in Maastricht in 1992, as the Soviet Union collapsed. The raison d’être of the currency ended precisely as it was being born.
The time has come to wake up from this harmful and fruitless dream. A good starting point would be to recognise that the single currency is a trap for practically all its members — for different reasons — not a gold mine. EU states, both in and outside the eurozone, should admit that the euro has been a strategic error. The aim of building a global western currency that vies with the dollar was a challenge to the US. The European vision of a United States of Europe has resulted in both open and hidden US warfare against the EU and the eurozone in the past two decades.
We need to work out how to free ourselves from this trap. Europeans must give up their risky fantasies of creating a power that rivals the US. Members of the eurozone should be allowed to leave the currency zone in the coming decades, and those remaining should build a more sustainable global currency. Let’s celebrate the 30th anniversary in 2022 of the Maastricht treaty that spawned the euro by rewriting the pact.

THE EUROZONE is a mistake, with most countries which signed up to the single European currency faring better before its introduction. Now all members should be given the option of an exit mechanism, the Governor of the Hungarian National Bank has said in a scathing assessment.
Hungary has not yet signed up for the Eurozone – those countries which use the euro as currency – which includes 19 out of the 28 EU member states. The country still has its own currency, the Forint – and Gyorgy Matolcsy’s withering assessment highlights the grave doubts within Eastern European countries including his own, as well as Poland and the Czech Republic, at the prospect of becoming members. The young girls then found themselves in a room full of strange, older Ottawa men who started touching them in a sexual manner. The girls were told they weren’t friendly enough, and the men became frustrated. In turn, an element of fear was introduced when the girls were told not to “piss us off” and that they needed to “behave.”
They were told to get ready to go to “work” at the casino, but before they were subjected to sex acts with adult men, one of the runaways texted an Ottawa police officer with the missing persons unit and the girls were rescued.

A 24-year-old man who authorities say was among masked Antifa supporters attacking conservatives at a June demonstration in Portland, Ore., was sentenced Friday to nearly six years in prison in connection with a brutal baton assault.
Gage Halupowski pleaded guilty to second-degree assault after authorities accused him of using a weapon against a conservative demonstrator who suffered blows to the head that the victim claims left him with a concussion and cuts that required 25 staples to close.

UPDATED: Sweden’s national bomb squad has been called out to 30 blasts in the last two months – and 100 this year – with a police analyst calling it ‘incredible’ there have been no fatalities.
In the early hours of Friday, police were sent out to an explosion in central Malmö. Windows were shattered, a car damaged, but no one was injured. Three suspects were held shortly after the blast.
Just a couple of hours later police were called out to a blast in Växjö. The same morning a car was demolished in a blast at a car park in Landvetter, Gothenburg. No one was injured.
They were the latest incidents in a trend that has so far seen twice the number of explosions in Sweden this year as the same period last year. The Local investigated what’s behind the blasts in this article this week.

He also declared that Iran is now working on a prototype centrifuge which would be 50 times faster as those that are allowed by JCPOA.
Salehi made this reveal to state television on the 40th anniversary of the US embassy takeover in Tehran, adding that the IR-6 centrifuges are capable of producing enriched uranium 10 times as fast as the first generation IR-1 centrifuges that were permitted by the deal which limited Iran to using only 5,060 of the IR-1s.

This was the second time Brig. Gen. Shekarchi has warned the US about the dangers of a conflict with Iran. The intelligence agencies are also reportedly worried about Pakistan’s mobile telephone network spilling over into Indian territory and India’s paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) has allegedly asked police in Punjab state to ban the possession of Pakistani SIM cards.

To aid those who are working with women and girls returning from Daesh-held territories, the ISD put together guidance that offers an insight into the complex combination of factors that they claim spurs radicalisation.
The guidance, which says it seeks to overthrow the simplistic view carried by the mainstream press that marriage is a dominating factor in many such cases, is based on interviews with intervention providers who worked with more 250 radicalised women and girls in the UK and the Netherlands.
The ISD team says beyond love or marriage, profound feelings of social exclusion, rebellion, and the appeal of sisterhood often motivate the so-called “jihadi brides”.
Undoubtedly, marriage is a factor in many cases, states the research, but adds:
“A simplistic view of the motivations of women and girls affiliated with Islamist extremism can reinforce misleading stereotypes and biases that suggest that women are passive followers rather than active, ideological supporters.”
Travelling to the proclaimed caliphate was perceived by some to be an opportunity for achieving a “true and pure Islamic life”, spurred by a desire to be part of something “bigger and divine”, according to the research.
Other stated factors were feelings of social exclusion or individual experiences of discrimination.
The guidance also says rebellion against society and parents sometime played a factor, along with female empowerment and a rejection of “western feminism”.
Contentious Repatriation Issue
According to unverified reports around 100 British women and girls left the UK to join Daesh, making up 12 per cent of all British citizens who travelled to Syria and Iraq to join the group.
UK judges are currently considering the Home Office’s decision to revoke the citizenship of one such woman, Shamima Begum.
Begum fled to Syria with two fellow pupils from Bethnal Green Academy, in east London in February 2015, married a Dutch convert to Islam, and had three children, all of whom died.
Since surfacing at a refugee camp in February, Begum expressed a desire to return to the UK, although she did not regret joining the terrorist group.
After this and other controversial statements, the then home secretary, Sajid Javid, revoked her British citizenship.
The woman, who is of dual nationality as her parents were born in Bangladesh, launched an appeal against the Home Office’s move, alleging she had been left stateless.
Bangladesh has officially denied Begum has dual citizenship, saying she is a British citizen by birth and has never applied for Bangladeshi nationality.
The UK government claims that under Bangladeshi law, Begun is a citizen by descent, and cannot be made stateless by losing her British citizenship.
According to the woman’s lawyers, Begum cannot go to Bangladesh as “if she arrived covertly she would be hanged.”
Against the backdrop of this and other similar high-profile cases, in October, former Shadow Home Secretary and ex- Brexit Secretary David Davis said Britain risks becoming a “shameful anomaly” if it doesn’t repatriate its nationals, as aid organisations, such as Save the Children, have estimated that at least 30 British women and 60 children born to British mothers were living in a camp for Daesh relatives in Syria.
In an article in The Times, Davis stressed that if the government doesn’t address this problem, those children will become Britain’s enemies in the future.

“Private schools are making hundreds of thousands of pounds from Vietnamese children who are entering Britain on student visas then disappearing, it has been revealed.
Children thought to be as young as 15 are being brought to the UK by suspected trafficking gangs through legitimate visas sponsored by private schools, an investigation by The Times found.
Despite the students paying for a term at school they then often going missing within weeks of starting at the school.
The investigation carried out by the paper uncovered at least 21 Vietnamese children who have vanished from boarding schools and private colleges across Britain in the past four years.
The investigation was carried out without the schools’ knowledge.
They are mostly girls with what is known as the “private school visa”. Police and the Home Office are investigating the disappearances, but many of the youngsters remain unaccounted for.
Eight Vietnamese children have gone missing from the £25,000-a-year Chelsea Independent College, a west London school owned by Astrum Education, a for-profit body.
According to a former member of staff, one girl ran away at night through a fire escape, causing a “panic” among staff.
At Abbey College, Malvern, Worcestershire, which says that it has educated “the children and grandchildren of kings, heads of state and other preeminent global figures”, a 15-year-old girl from Vietnam who started at the school in September 2017 failed to return after Christmas.
All the schools and colleges identified followed protocol and reported the disappearances to police and the Home Office. All the children arrived in Britain on Tier 4 child visas, which are sponsored by schools and do not require an English language test.
A former teacher said: “At holidays they wouldn’t come back — there would be no answer on the phone. It was a loophole – someone realised this was a way of getting Vietnamese girls into the system.”
Astrum Education Group said that it had been targeted by “organised criminal activity”. It has reviewed safeguarding procedures…”

Copenhagen Primary School in Islington, North London, said youngsters were being equipped with survival techniques to tackle a “fear culture” which prevents parents from allowing them to leave their homes.
Staff invited a mixed martial arts expert and a charity battling the causes of knife crime to speak to pupils from Years 3 to 6 last month.
The children, aged seven to 10, learnt what was best to do if approached by someone carrying a knife and they were given talks about how to choose a “better path”.
Amardeep Panesar, head teacher at the Treaty Road school, told the Islington Tribune: “In our Copenhagen community, the parents have a fear culture and don’t let children out.
Even in terms of going to the local park, it is a frightening event for them and I am not surprised.
“So in terms of educating the children, we need to teach these kinds of techniques to survive so that they can enjoy all the things that other children enjoy.
“To me there is a fear factor in this particular community, they are absolutely frightened to let their children out and these children could be losing part of their childhood.”
The knife-crime event was organised by the Give Back London (GBL) charity.
They brought in mixed martial arts expert Yan Sophokleous who taught the children to hit an attacker in the private parts and run away if someone puts a knife to your neck.
GBL founder Chiney Foong said: “It’s unfortunate that we have to come in at this age but we want to get them before they get to an age where they already are involved in crime.””

“THUGS who attack police officers are getting away scot-free with only a tiny number being sent to jail, shocking figures reveal. Two-thirds of attackers are never prosecuted for assaulting police, and just four per cent who end up in court are put behind bars.
The startling statistics emerged as police leaders estimate an assault on front line bobbies happens every four minutes. Many say the justice system is failing to protect the force and called for more prosecutions and harsher sentences as a deterrent. According to the latest figures, 26,295 assaults on police were recorded in England and Wales in 2018. But only 8,265 thugs were convicted. Just 1,103 were sent to jail.
More than 1,500 were given either suspended prison sentences or conditional discharges. Community sentences were handed to 2,800 offenders, while 2,427 were fined.
But there were only 280 cases where magistrates ordered attackers to pay compensation to the injured officers.
A new law came into force this year doubling the maximum jail term for thugs who assault police and emergency workers to 12 months.
However, police leaders are pressing for greater punishments to curb the rising tide of violence against police on the streets.
The figures, from courts in England and Wales, are for the offence of “assault on constable” and do not include more serious attacks like wounding and attempted murder.
Director of public prosecutions Max Hill, QC, has held talks with police chiefs to discuss their rising concern over the number of offenders charged with attacking police.
But officially recorded statistics fail to give the full picture, say some experts. The number of attacks on officers and other emergency workers is “vastly under reported,” according to the Police Federation.
Data collected in England and Wales by the federation suggests there are more than two million physical attacks on police every year.
The federation is calling for improved access to more protective equipment.
A Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said yesterday: “The director of public prosecutions has met with police colleagues to listen to their concerns. We have now agreed a joint approach and updated CPS guidance on prosecuting assaults on emergency workers will be published shortly.”
The dangers faced by police have been highlighted in recent months by several shocking incidents, including the killing of Thames Valley PC Andrew Harper.”

A mass protest in Tehran on Monday commemorated the 40th anniversary of the US embassy takeover by university students in 1979.

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Scores of people were injured in Hong Kong during a chaotic weekend of anti-government protests that left one man in a critical condition, authorities said on Monday, and China called for a tougher stance to end months of unrest.
Twelve police officers were also injured during the weekend clashes, with more than 300 people ranging from 14 to 54 years of age arrested between Friday and Sunday, police said.
