“At least 52 members of Lebanon’s security forces have been injured during anti-government protests in Beirut, while 70 people have been detained, the Lebanese Internal Security Forces (ISF) said.
Since Thursday, Beirut and other cities have been gripped by protests with the demonstrators demanding that the government resign and action be taken to cope with the worsening economic situation in the country. The protesters blocked off major highways. In central Beirut, the rallies turned violent as the demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails on the police, while the security forces resorted to using stun grenades, rubber bullets and tear gas. Early on Friday, the ISF’s General Directorate announced that 40 security personnel were injured in the clashes.
“The number of those injured among the Internal Security Forces personnel has reached 52, while 70 people were detained while they were carrying out acts of vandalism, arson and robbery in Beirut,” the forces wrote on Twitter late on Friday.
The rallies erupted as the government sought to raise additional funds by introducing a $6 monthly tax on online calls made via WhatsApp and other mobile applications. On Thursday, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said the country’s economy suffered from a financial blockade and sanctions.
The tax was abandoned as the protests gained momentum. However, the rallies continued with dozens of people injured in the clashes between the security forces and the protesters.”

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An explosion rocked a mosque in eastern Afghanistan as dozens of people gathered to offer Friday players, causing the roof to collapse and killing 62 worshippers, provincial officials said.
Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar, said the militant attack wounded 36 others. He said it was not immediately clear if the mosque was attacked by a suicide bomber or some other type of bombing.
“Both men and children are among those killed and wounded in the attack,” he said.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but both the Taliban and the Islamic State group are active in eastern Afghanistan, especially Nangarhar province.
Zahir Adil, spokesman for the public health department in Nangarhar Province, said 23 of the wounded were transferred to Jalalabad, the provincial capital, and the rest were being treated in the Haskamena district clinic.
The violence comes a day after a United Nations report said that Afghan civilians are dying in record numbers in the country’s increasingly brutal war, noting that more civilians died in July than in any previous one-month period since the U.N. began keeping statistics.

Afghanistan: At least 62 killed in mosque bombing attack
At least 62 people have been killed and over 100 injured after a mosque was struck by a bombing on Friday in the area of Haska Mena in Nangarhar province.
Footage shows a number of the injured being taken to the Sehat Ama Hospital in Jalalabad.
“According to our colleague’s information, 25 dead bodies were moved to the hospitals, but most of the victims are still under debris, or under the roof of the mosque. The [death] toll can change,” said Nangarhar Provincial Health Department Spokesperson Zahir Adil.
Abdul Wahab, one of those injured in the blast, said “that mosque was for the whole village so around 300 people were in the mosque at that time, most of the people were under debris and killed, just maybe several people were rescued there.”
“The mosque was completely destroyed,” Wahab added.
According to reports, the bomb struck as worshippers gathered for Friday prayers and the force of the blast was so great that a section of the mosque’s roof collapsed. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

A female Muslim lay judge involved in an infamous court case that controversially used Sharia law principles has been convicted of gross fraud over false employment reports.
Ebtisam Aldebe, a former politician in the Swedish Centre Party, was convicted of fraud after filing employment reports and compensation claims for a total just over 150,000 Swedish Krona/SEK (£11,945/$15,335) on 138 separate occasions, Mitt I reports.
As part of her sentencing, she is expected to pay 150,000 SEK to the Solna District court along with a further 6,000 in daily fines.
“It is obvious that the purpose of her actions has been to hide the fact that she did not have the income loss for which she claimed compensation,” the court said in its judgement.
Aldebe denied the crime, saying: “I’m innocent, absolutely.” The Muslim lay judge will be able to appeal the judgement up until the 5th of November.
The former Centre Party politician became a controversial figure last year after she, along with another lay judge, ruled that a Muslim man accused of beating his wife was innocent because he came from a better family than his spouse.
The judges also questioned why the woman had gone to the Swedish police first to resolve the matter, rather than to members of the Muslim community.

RAHIM YAR KHAN: A ‘qari’ in Basti Khudali tied his 11-year-old student to a charpoy whereafter he beat him ruthlessly, police said on Wednesday, adding that they had arrested the madrassa teacher.
The ‘qari’, identified as Moulvi Muhammad Qasim, tied the minor boy, P*, to the charpoy with a rope and assaulted him with rods. Residents of the area, who heard the 11-year-old crying out in pain, arrived at the scene and alerted police.
The minor boy sustained injuries on various parts of his body and was consequently shifted to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
On the other hand, the suspect, Moulvi Muhammad Qasim, said he beat P* because the boy used to run away during lessons. However, officers at the Saddar police station registered a first information report (FIR) in this regard and arrested Qasim.

A terrorist plot inspired by the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US was foiled recently by French police, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner has revealed, defending his record after fatal stabbings at the Paris police HQ.
During his appearance on the France 2 TV show called ‘Vous avez la parole’ (You have the word) on Thursday, Castaner brought up for the first time last month’s arrest of “an individual who wanted to take inspiration from September 11.”
The wannabe attacker had a “project” to hijack a plane and was “getting organized” to do so, the minister said, offering no further details.
French media filled in some of the blanks later in the day, citing police sources. The suspect lived in the Hauts-de-Seine department, just west of central Paris, and is a French national under 30 years of age, according to these reports.
He was also reportedly considering carrying out the attack in another EU country, because France was under “too much surveillance,” according to these same sources. Police and the French counter-intelligence service DGSI reportedly did have him under surveillance for three to four months, as the suspect sought accomplices via social media.

Hundreds have been left without shelter after fires broke out at an overcrowded migrant camp on the Greek island of Samos. The incident marks the second of its kind in less than a month.

BAGHDAD: Armed men in uniform seized a prominent Iraqi blogger from his home Thursday, one of his relatives told AFP, after a wave of deadly anti-government protests earlier this month.
The authorities have not confirmed reports of Shujaa al-Khafaji’s arrest. The armed men who allegedly snatched him from his home did not identify themselves or hand over an arrest warrant.
Khafaji uses his Facebook page Al-Khowa al-Nadifa (meaning “Those Who Have Clean Hands” in Arabic) to publish posts on political and social issues. The page has some 2.5 million readers in Iraq.
Last month, he had faced cyber harassment after a string of attacks on military bases the Hashed al-Shaabi, the paramilitary force dominated by pro-Iran groups.
“On Thursday, at 5:30 am, a group of men in special forces uniform broke into his house and took him in the direction of the Al-Muthanna airport prison,” in central Baghdad, a relative of the blogger told AFP on condition of anonymity.

It has consequences that threaten liberty.
We have a serious governance problem.
Our system is based on separation of powers, because liberty depends on preventing any component of the state from accumulating too much authority — that’s how tyrants are born. For the system to work, the components have to be able to check each other: The federal and state governments must respect their separate spheres, and the branches of the federal government must be able to rein in a branch that oversteps its authority.
The steady federal encroachment on state authority has created an imbalance that probably cannot be rolled back. I want to focus on the collapse of inter-branch checks in the federal government.
This was the issue I dealt with in Faithless Execution. The thesis was that the Framers feared an agglomeration of power in the presidency they were creating, so they endowed Congress with significant checks on the executive. The ultimate one was impeachment. But this was supposed to be reserved for truly abominable misconduct. Though Madison concluded that impeachment was “indispensable” in light of the damage a rogue president could do, it also came with its own set of problems. Not least, impeachment might give Congress too much power over the executive. It might be invoked out of partisan mischief, rather than serious maladministration. Consequently, impeachment was made to be really hard to do.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver revealed on Thursday that the Chinese government insisted the league fire Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey over a now-deleted October 4 tweet supporting the protesters in Hong Kong, according to Time.
“We made clear that we were being asked to fire him, by the Chinese government, by the parties we dealt with, government and business,” Silver said in his first US interview about the league’s ongoing free speech scandal. “We said there’s no chance that’s happening. There’s no chance we’ll even discipline him.”
Speaking at the TIME 100 Health Summit, Silver noted that “The losses have already been substantial,” adding “Our games are not back on the air in China as we speak, and we’ll see what happens next.”

Itinerary for a trip to Ukraine in August organized by the Atlantic Council think tank reveals that a staffer on Rep. Adam Schiff’s House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence held a meeting during the trip with acting U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor, now a key witness for Democrats pursuing impeachment.
The Atlantic Council is funded by and works in partnership with Burisma, the natural gas company at the center of allegations regarding Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.
Taylor has been called by House Democrats to appear next week to provide a deposition as part of the investigation being led by Schiff into President Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Taylor himself has evidenced a close relationship with the Burisma-funded Atlantic Council, writing analysis pieces published on the Council’s website and serving as a featured speaker for the organization’s events. He also served for nine years as senior advisor to the U.S.-Ukraine Business Council, which has co-hosted scores of events with the Atlantic Council.
As Breitbart News reported, Thomas Eager, a staffer on Schiff’s House Intelligence Committee, took a trip to Ukraine in August billed as a bipartisan “Ukraine Study Trip” in which ten Congressional staffers participated.
Eager is also currently a fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Congressional Fellowship, a bipartisan program that says it “educates congressional staff on current events in the Eurasia region.” The pre-planned Ukraine trip was part of the fellowship program.
Burisma in January 2017 signed a “cooperative agreement” with the Council to specifically sponsor the organization’s Eurasia Center, the same center that sponsored Eager’s Ukraine trip.

Police declared the march illegal on Friday, citing concerns over public safety, and a court on Saturday said the destination of the march – the main railway interchange with mainland China – could be attacked and vandalized.
Hardcore protesters have in recent weeks targeted mainland Chinese businesses, daubing them in graffiti and at times setting fires, while mainland Chinese living in Hong Kong have begun to express fears for their own safety.

In the incident, which has sparked massive outrage, two men and a woman entered Tiwari’s house in saffron – coloured clothing and carried a box of sweets on the pretext of a Diwali offering. Soon after walking in, the assailants opened the box, took out a firearm, sprayed Tiwari with bullets and fled. CCTV footage was recovered by the police.
Following a complaint against the two clerics by Tiwari’s widow, Maulana Anwarul Haque has been taken into custody for questioning.

“An Algerian illegal migrant who entered Britain via France after hiding in the back of a lorry has been jailed for strangling and sexually assaulting a teenager.
Khaled Meridja was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court after being convicted of one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted rape, the Oxford Mail reports.
“[Meridja] came upstairs and then he was trying to do stuff to me and I was [saying] ‘what the hell are you doing’ and I was trying to look for my phone,” recounted the migrant’s victim, who now suffers difficulty sleeping after being “forever changed” by that attack, during his trial.
“He was grabbing hold of my breasts and I [said] ‘what the hell are you doing, get off me’ and then he pushed me up against the wall,” she added.
“Then he was strangling me so much I could not breathe. He was just strangling me and I didn’t know what to do,” she said, telling jurors she thought she was “going to die”.
Describing the attack as a “determined attempt” to rape the unnamed teenager, who was sexually touched by Meridja while he strangled her and tried to pull down her trousers, sentencing judge Maria Lamb noted that “This incident only ended because she got away from you and not because you desisted.”
“She fled and fell down the stairs during the course of it… and was helped by a bus driver,” the judge recalled, adding that she commended “the public spiritedness and responsible [action] taken by the lady bus driver who helped a young woman clearly in distress.”
The migrant was only given a prison sentence of seven and a half years, however — and it is typically the case that criminals in England given so-called determinate sentences are automatically released on licence at the halfway point in their terms.
Criminals handed extended determinate sentences can be held in custody for longer — generally two-thirds of their sentence — but local court reports give no indication that Meridja received such a sentence.”

Russia expert Fiona Hill, who reportedly left the National Security Council on 19 July 2019 (i.e., six days before the Trump phone call to Ukraine on 25 July), testified in a closed-door hearing to Adam Schiff’s House Intelligence Committee this week. Hill had been brought to the NSC in the spring of 2017 as one of the staffing decisions in the transition from Michael Flynn to H.R. McMaster.
One might say that the problem with laying out Hill’s connections to the usual suspects of Spygate is knowing where to start.

Earlier this month, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) advised skipping the impeachment of Donald Trump and just proceeding directly to the penalty phase. She even specified what the punishment should be, writing on Twitter, “Impeachment is not good enough for Trump. He needs to be imprisoned & placed in solitary confinement.” She of course meant “impeachment is too good enough for Trump,” but if we’re going to dwell on Auntie Maxine’s dubious felicity with her native tongue, we’ll get nowhere fast.
Anyhoo, Waters is not the only liberal daydreaming about how best to make the president pay not only for his high crimes and misdemeanors but his lesser sins as well. As the Washington Post reports, “A small athletic-wear company from Oregon says it is taking a stand against President Trump and has chosen a 30-foot billboard in Times Square depicting him being hogtied in front of the White House to do so.”

Speaking to the Hungarian private broadcaster HirTV, Orbán warned in comments reported by euronews: “If Turkey sets off further hundreds of thousands on top of this, then we will need to use force to protect the Hungarian border and the Serbian-Hungarian frontier, and I do not wish for anyone that we should need to resort to that.”
Orbán’s comments come after the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, continued to threaten the European Union not to oppose his actions in Syria: “I say it again. If you try to label this operation as an invasion, it’s very simple: we will open the gates and send 3.6 million refugees your way.”
Orbán concluded: “The next weeks will decide what Turkey does with these people. It can steer them in two directions: take them back to Syria or set them off towards Europe.”

At the height of the European migrant crisis in 2015, hundreds of thousands of people from the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa marched over Hungary’s southern border and deeper into Europe.
Hungary was able to reduce illegal crossings by 99 per cent after Prime Minister Orbán sealed the country’s southern border with Serbia, effectively shutting down the main Balkan migration route. Over the two-year period after the construction of the wall, border crossings fell from 391,000 in 2015 to just 1,184 in 2017.

Iran: Arbaeen marked with procession in Tehran
Thousands of Iranian worshippers joined a procession in Tehran on Saturday, as part of the annual observance of Arbaeen.

Democrats huff, puff, bluff and blow, but impeachment falls down
Democrats, who’ve done nothing but call for impeachment since 2016, who’ve done nothing but stage an “impeachment inquiry” that allows them to skirt normal processes of transparency while keeping the “I-word” alive and fresh in the press, have suddenly decided they don’t need no stinkin’ vote.
That’s after Rep. Adam Schiff, quasi leader of the skunk pack of Democrats, suddenly decided the whistleblower he dangled before the media, promising testimony that would blow the lid off impeachment and send President Donald Trump packing, has suddenly decided he don’t need no stinkin’ testimony.
The common denominator with these stunning reversals?
Both testimonies would’ve put Democrats in the position of having to stand and suffer some of their own fire.
They would’ve had to produce the goods, or pipe down and go away. And in the world of political poker, such as they’ve been playing, their only tool is the bluff.
Look at these rapidly changing times — first, Schiff on Twitter on September 27: “I want to thank the whistleblower for coming forward, and for their courage. I urge others to do so as well — notwithstanding the threats and intimidation. Our democracy depends on it.”

Chaos and violence have broken out in Mexico, even more than usual. The footage looks like something out of a war zone. This latest bit of anarchy began when Mexican law enforcement officers managed to arrest Ovidio Guzmán, one of the top drug lords in the country and son of the notorious kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
Unfortunately, Guzmán’s cartel was not willing to let the son end up in a U.S. maximum security prison like the father. Dozens of gunmen, armed with everything from machine guns to grenade launchers to sniper rifles, invaded the city where Guzmán was captured and started murdering police officers. The Daily Wire reports that the cartel militants also went searching for the family members of Mexican military personnel.

The comment was slammed by Åkesson, who responded: “I’m sorry, but it is so reality-free to hear you say that ‘we need labour and therefore it has been good that the municipalities receive refugees.’ It is completely devoid of reality. It will be an extreme burden on the municipal economy, and it directly affects the welfare system.”
Several municipalities across Sweden which have taken in large shares of migrants per capita have warned in the last several months that they may be facing financial crisis due to lack of labour integration of newly arrived migrants.
The municipality of Bengtsfors went as far as saying they faced bankruptcy if the national government did not come to their aid with a fresh infusion of cash to pay for migrants in the area…”

“A state of alert has taken over in Germany’s capital, Berlin, amidst fears of the return of German ISIS militants held by the Kurds in Syria.
Head of the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) Thomas Haldenwang have joined parties launching these calls.
In remarks to Der Spiegel website, Haldenwang said German security services shall be “vigilant” for the possible return of fighters.
“The conflict in northern Syria may lead to the release of foreign ISIS militants from prisons and their return to Europe,” he explained.
He also expressed fears that ISIS could regain power following the Turkish military operation in Syria.
According to the German government, Kurds in Syria have 84 German-national ISIS militants. Almost one third of them are classified by the German police as a threat, including 19 men and eight women.
The police believe they pose a high threat and could carry out terrorist attacks in the country.
Der Spiegel said 50 out of 84 fighters may remain free after returning to Germany since there is no evidence to prosecute them for their actions in Syria and Iraq.
The website added that at least four women with German citizenship have fled Kurdish prisons since the Turkish operation began a week ago.
A few months ago, German newspapers reported a visit by German intelligence agents to the Kurdish prisons, where foreign fighters remain, to “assess” German fighters there.
Germany refuses to take them back because it doesn’t have enough evidence to try them, meaning they will remain free.
Germany’s security authorities do not only fear the return of ISIS extremists but also fears the right-wing extremism, which has become an quivalent threat compared to fundamentalist militancy, according to Germany’s security assessment.
State interior ministers met on Friday to agree on additional measures that could be taken to combat the spread of the far right, especially after the attack on a Jewish synagogue a few days ago.”
