Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Trump Approves Strikes Against Iran on Thursday but Abruptly Backtracks on His Decision – Report (sputniknews, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201906211075998209-trump-approves-strikes-against-iran-on-thursday-but-abruptly-backtracks-on-his-decision—report/

“Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated following the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ downing of a US Global Hawk spy drone that Tehran claimed had violated Iran airspace in Hormozgan province. Trump initially stated that Iran had made “a very big mistake”, but later stepped back from on his comment to retaliate.

US President Donald Trump approved a military operation against Iran after the downing of a US Global Hawk spy drone, but stepped back from launching it on Thursday night, The New York Times reported.

According to the report, military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike order as late as 7 p.m. (23:00 GMT) Thursday. Prior to that ,there were heated debates at the White House involving Trump’s top national security officials and leaders from Congress.

The outlet added, citing a senior Trump administration official, that aircraft and ships had been in position to fire missiles when the order came to cancel the operation.

Donald Trump initially approved attacks against a series of Iranian targets, including radar and missile batteries, The New York Times reported, citing multiple senior administration officials.

The operation, although underway, was abandoned in its early stages.

According to the report, it is not clear whether the attacks might still go forward.

The military operation was slated to take place before dawn Friday in Iran in order to “minimise risk to the Iranian military or to civilians,” The New York Times reported.

CENTCOM described the downing of an American RQ-4 surveillance drone as an Iranian attempt to disrupt the ability of the US to monitor the area following recent threats to international shipping and the free flow of commerce, adding that the incident had occurred in international waters.

US President Donald Trump initially said Iran had made “a very big mistake”, but later tempered his comments by suggesting to reporters that he doubted the drone’s downing was intentional.

The US President also noted that the incident would have been far more serious if the aircraft had been a manned vehicle, saying that it would have made “a big, big difference”.

The incident followed recent attacks on at least six oil tankers in the Persian Gulf region that the United States has blamed on Iran. Tehran in its turn has denied all the allegations.

Major General Hossein Salami, the commander-in-chief of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, stated on Thursday that the country had downed a US drone to send a “clear message” to Washington.

“Iran is not seeking war with any country, but we are fully prepared to defend Iran,” he said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has expressed Tehran’s intentions to prove that the United States is lying in its claim that its drone was downed by the Iranian army in international airspace. To that end he tweeted a map showing the location of the downing of the US Global Hawk spy drone, noting Iran had retrieved “sections” of the military drone – which originated in the UAE – in Iranian territorial waters.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated since May 2018, when the US President scrapped the 2015 nuclear deal, which curbed Iran’s nuclear programme, claiming that it failed to stop Iran’s ballistic missile programme. The US administration has since adopted a “maximum pressure” policy aimed at pressuring the Islamic republic into negotiating a ‘better’ deal, but appears to have achieved quite the opposite so far.”

  3. ‘Dangerous’ Muslim Brotherhood fatwa app in Apple Store’s top 100 downloads (thenational, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://www.thenational.ae/world/dangerous-muslim-brotherhood-fatwa-app-in-apple-store-s-top-100-downloads-1.877092

“A “dangerous hate” app linked to the Muslim Brotherhood has been in the top 100 downloads in the Apple store in a third of European countries since its launch, despite international calls for it to be banned.

The Euro Fatwa app, which was launched in April, was created by the European Council for Fatwa and Research, a Dublin private foundation set up by Yusuf Al Qaradawi, spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Touted as a guide to help Muslims adhere to Islam, critics including Germany’s security service, say the app is a radicalisation tool.

It contains an introduction by Al Qaradawi, now 93, in which he makes derogatory references to Jews while speaking about historic fatwas.

It also claims European laws do not have to be obeyed if they contradict Islamic rules.

Al Qaradawi, who lives in Qatar, is banned from the US, UK and France for his extremist views.

On learning of the app’s content, Google banned it within hours.

“While we can’t comment on individual apps, we’ll take swift action against any that break our policies once we’ve been made aware of them, including those that contain hate speech,” the company said.

But a month after The National informed Apple that the app contains hate speech, it is still accessible from the App Store.

“We are reviewing Euro Fatwa again for possible violations of our guidelines and, if we find content that violates our guidelines and is harmful to users, we will notify the developer and may remove it from the store,” an Apple spokesman said.

Apple was also contacted by Northern Irish politician Ian Paisley and German authorities.

The UK government has previously criticised those making the app available for download, saying it will take tough action on social media companies that help to promote hate.

So far no country has banned the app because they are only able to put sanctions in place against social media companies.

At one point this month, the Euro Fatwa App was ranked 55th in the German App Store.

“The app is a building block in the process of radicalisation,” said Germany’s federal office for the protection of the constitution.

The app was launched last month at the annual La Foire Musulmane, or Muslim Fair, in Paris, which was attended by tens of thousands of people.

It was introduced by Khaled Hanafy, a Cairo-born theologian and chairman of the Imams and Scholars’ Council in Germany.

French senator and member of the Gulf-French Friendship Committee Nathalie Goulet called the app “poisonous” on Twitter and called for it to be banned.

A former French anti-corruption magistrate said it was to blame for last month’s Lyon nail bomb terror attack, in which 13 people were wounded.

Retail outlets such as Google Play and Apple’s App Store can take it off the market but Apple continues to promote it.

The UK’s Home Office has advised technology companies that promote hate material that they will face action.

“No social media platform should allow themselves to be used to spread extremist propaganda,” a spokesman said in response to complaints about the app.

“We continue to work with our international partners and tech companies to tackle online terrorist and extremist propaganda, but we are clear they must go further and faster.

“That is why we are introducing a statutory duty of care to make companies take responsibility for the safety of their users, and an independent regulator to take enforcement action where they fail to do so.”

The UK government has published its Online Harms White Paper as a precursor to legislation that sets out expectations for tech companies to keep users safe online.

In 2015, an investigation into the Muslim Brotherhood by the British government concluded that membership “may be an indicator of extremism”, and that aspects of its ideology and tactics were contrary to the UK’s fundamental values.

Campaigners have repeatedly highlighted the dangers of Al Qaradawi’s web and social media presence for creating extremists.

“What makes Qaradawi unique from other extremists are the ways in which his presence is condoned by social media, specifically through Facebook and Twitter’s verified user checkmark,” Counter-Extremism Project researcher Joshua Fisher-Birch said this year.

Mr Paisley described the app as dangerous, calling on UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid to ban it and launch an urgent inquiry into the Muslim Brotherhood.

“It’s essential that the UK continues to lead the fight against extremist ideology and we co-operate with our neighbours to maximise this,” he wrote in a letter.

“A number of MPs have previously raised issues to do with the spread of extremist ideology and activity by the Muslim Brotherhood.”

The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt referred to Al Qaradawi’s role as a terrorist, supported by Qatar, when the four countries announced a boycott of Doha in 2017.

They said the boycott was in response to the country’s support for terrorism and harbouring supporters of extremism, such as Al Qaradawi.

The Egyptian-born imam has defended violence against US troops in Iraq and regularly delivered vehement lectures against the West on Qatari television.

He has also suggested that the Holocaust was “divine punishment” against Jews and called for Israel’s destruction.”

Meanwhile, ‘gay and trans panic’ defenses have been used in New York murder cases for decades.

The defense was most famously deployed during the high-profile trial of James Dixon, a New York man who fatally attacked trans woman Islan Nettles in 2013.

Dixon’s lawyers claimed their client was flirting with Nettles before he flew into a rage when he learned about her trans identity.

Dixon was reportedly embarrassed and mocked by friends for flirting with a person who was born a man.
He was eventually found guilty of manslaughter – a charge Nettles’ family claims is not adequate enough.”

Officials of the Police Department 14 yesterday provisionally arrested a 45-year-old Moroccan after he allegedly spat on, threatened and insulted two men of Jewish faith and police officers. According to the current state of the investigation, two men of Jewish faith have approached the police officer at the town hall portal and have indicated that they have been threatened by a man at the town hall. The man, a 45-year-old Moroccan, first tried to escape, but stopped at the request of the police officer. Suddenly the man ran to the two victims and spat on them. The officer intervened immediately. The 45-year-old behaved aggressively and uncooperatively and did not respond to the police officer’s intervention, so that the use of pepper spray was threatened against him. Because the man could not be calmed down, handcuffs were put on him. Despite the handcuffs, the man spat around again. Thereupon a spit protection hood was put on him. Throughout the entire operation, the man spoke alternately German and Arabic. 7. Kurdish Doctor Warns of ‘Ticking Bomb’ as Pundits Urge Finland to Take Back Its Daesh Relatives (sputniknews, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201906211076002551-daesh-wives-children-ticking-bomb-finland/

“Finland’s neighbours, Norway and Sweden, have already started taking back so-called “Daesh* kids” for humanitarian reasons, as officials declared they are powerless to stop their nationals from returning.

A group of 15 legal experts from leading universities in Finland and abroad have joined the ongoing debate on the fate of Finnish “Daesh brides” and “Daesh children” by reminding that it is constitutionally prohibited to prevent Finnish citizens from entering the country.

Citing the Finnish constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights, the pundits stressed in an opinion piece in the daily Helsingin Sanomat newspaper that no person may be deprived of the right to enter the territory of the state in which he is a national.

Therefore, they argued, the question is not whether the authorities should prevent re-entry, but whether they should assist in moving them from the crisis area to a safer location. In any case, they underscored, consular missions must not deny assistance as punishment for unlawful activity.

Another document they referenced is the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which demands that states always act in accordance with the principle of the children’s best interests.

“It is our understanding that all of the above means the government has an obligation to assist children and their guardians in returning to the country,” they concluded.

While the previous centre-right government led by Juha Sipilä rejected the idea of taking back Finnish nationals living in camps for Daesh relatives, the present left-of-the-centre government led by Anti Rinne remains undecided.

Interior Minister Maria Ohisalo of the Green Party said that the government has an obligation toward Finnish terrorists’ children, but added that she understands that many people may oppose the idea of welcoming them home.

By contrast, Kurdish doctor Nemam Ghafouri, now living in Sweden, argued that “Daesh brides” are as dangerous as their men, calling to bring them to justice and take away their children.

Having visited the notorious Al-Hol camp in Syrian Kurdistan, which she called “a veritable hell”, she suggested it has effectively devolved into a Daesh stronghold, with Daesh sympathisers calling the shots there. According to her, the women there show no remorse and nurse hope that the “caliphate” will survive through their children.

“These women are a threat to their children’s lives, our lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren. Leaving the children in their hands is a ticking bomb”, Ghafouri told Finnish national broadcaster Yle, suggesting that they don’t even deserve to be called mothers.

According to Ghafouri, a trial in Syrian Kurdistan or Iraq would be the best option. Finland, as a nation that experienced wartime conditions itself, may pioneer this option, she ventured.

Previously, Magnus Ranstorp, a senior terrorism researcher at the Swedish National Defence College, has repeatedly warned of the dangers that Daesh brides and widows present.

Nevertheless, Finland’s neighbours Sweden and Norway have already started to accept back their nationals from detention camps in Iraq and Syria. Meanwhile, dozens of Finnish women and children still remain in the Middle East.

  8. Norwegian Muslims, Sikhs Protest ‘Offensive’ ID Requirement to Show Ears (sputniknews, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201906211075999719-norwegian-muslims-sikhs-passport-requirement-protests/

“Many Muslim women have their ears hidden under a hijab or some other kind of Islamic headdress, while Sikhs wear ear-covering turbans. Baring ears would therefore constitute a “degrading” breach of the tenets of their faith, they argue.

A group of Norwegian Muslims have launched a campaign to remove the requirement for visible ears on passports and ID cards.

A total of 842 responses from organisations and individuals alike were sent to the government to remove the mandatory ear demand, the news outlet Document reported.

“The requirement for visible ears on facial photography is contrary to freedom of religion”, the Muslim Common Council of Rogaland said.

“As a Muslim, I ask the government to change requirement to show the ears in the passport image. We feel that it is very offensive and degrading to have to remove the ears from the hijab as it violates the rights of all Muslim women living here in Norway. We believe that this law limits our freedom”, a typical response from a private person said.

Turban-wearing Sikhs also joined the cause to remove the visible ear requirement. The Sikhs and Punjabis of Rogaland also supported the popular movement.

According to Ingrid Rosendorf Joys, the leader of the Council for Religious and Life Stance Communities (STL), the Sikhs are among those particularly affected.

“The requirement for visible ears is a disproportionate intervention in the freedom of religion”, she explained.

In 2014, new rules for passports were introduced in Norway. One of the requirements was that one should have visible ears on one’s photograph. Ears can be of great importance when identifying a person.

“The ears are as unique as fingerprints and only slightly affected by weight changes, makeup and aging. They therefore provide much information that may be important for the manual checking of passport applicants against submitted documentation and previously registered facial photos in the passport register of the same name,” the legal justification for the requirement said.

Back then, a large group of Muslims and Sikhs created the so-called Religious Freedom Group and gathered 3,600 signatures, which were subsequently sent to the Minister of Justice. However, the law was implemented despite the protests.

Norway’s Islamic community has been growing exponentially since the 1960s. At present, Muslims are estimated to constitute 5.7 percent of Norway’s population of 5.2 million.

Norway’s Sikh community is estimated at 5,000, of whom 250 are estimated to wear a turban.”

  9. Italy’s Salvini Deserves Nobel Peace Prize for Contribution to EU Security – AfD Lawmaker (sputniknews, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/201906211076002414-italys-salvini-nobel-prize-eu-security/

“A member of Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Beatrix von Storch, believes that Italian Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini should be given the Nobel Peace Prize for his “great contribution” to European security and fight against illegal migration.

“Matteo Salvini, as the Italian interior minister, has made a great contribution to the security and stability of Europe. By closing Italy’s borders, he has successfully curbed illegal migration to Europe as well as the smuggling industry, and thus shown what honest and decisive policies can achieve … I propose Matteo Salvini for the Nobel Peace Prize because he has exemplified a successful policy of stability for Europe and for saving thousands of lives, an example that others should follow,” von Storch said in a statement released by AfD.

The Italian politician has not yet publicly commented on the German lawmaker’s proposal.

The Italian government and Salvini’s Lega party are pursuing a hardline policy on migration. Salvini has repeatedly said that Italy could not remain Europe’s “refugee camp” while neighbouring countries close their borders and defend their frontiers with weapons…”

  10. Underage Migrant Reportedly Rapes Foster Family’s Daughter, Says He Thought It Was Legal in Sweden (sputniknews, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201906211075999368-underage-migrant-rape-sweden/

“While the suspect’s legal guardian pointed out the teenager’s progress at school and described the event as “one-off”, the court decided to place the alleged culprit into special care and later prosecute him for child rape.

An unaccompanied 17-year-old migrant boy is suspected of having raped a much younger girl in the foster family where he was placed. In his defence, he explained during the interrogation that this was perfectly legal in his home country, and no one told him otherwise in Sweden, the newspaper Lokaltidningen reported.

According to the victim, she was forced to have sex with the 17-year-old in April this year. He, in turn, admitted to having sex with her, but argued that he was unaware that this is against the law. Instead, he described it as “something happening between two children”.

“[NN] has admitted the event to some extent but stated that he does not know the laws that apply in the country with regard to sex and cohabitation. Rectors at schools are obliged to inform every single person about the rules that apply to sex and cohabitation in Sweden,” the administrative court said, as quoted by Lokaltidningen.

However, it also transpired that the accused was clearly explained the rules that apply in Sweden to sexual relations at his previous accommodations.

The suspect’s legal guardian pointed out that the 17-year-old does well at school. He also described the event as a “one-off” and stressed that taking the boy into special care would destroy his progress. However, the administrative court didn’t share this attitude and decided that the 17-year-old should be placed in special care for six months with immediate effect. In due course, he will be prosecuted for rape against children.

The investigation also revealed suspicions that the alleged culprit may in fact be over 20 years old. In this case, the penalty will be longer.

According to Swedish law, the penalty for child rape varies between two and eight years’ prison.”

  11. Turkey Warns U.S.: You Cannot Drop Us from F-35 Program (breitbart, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/middle-east/2019/06/21/turkey-warns-u-s-you-cannot-drop-us-from-f-35-program/

“The United States was warned Friday it cannot unilaterally drop NATO ally Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet program as the partnership agreement specifically forbids it, Turkey’s head of Defense Industries Directorate said.

“No single country can say they don’t want you and then remove you from the program,” Ismail Demir told the Reuters newsagency.

“This isn’t part of the agreement, this isn’t something you can just say ‘I exclude you’ about. The F-35 project is a partnership and nowhere in the agreement does it allow a unilateral removal of one country,” he added.

The U.S. has previously warned Turkey it would refuse to sell its high-tech F-35 warplane and other weapons systems if Ankara moves forward with the purchase of the S-400 missile system from Russia.

In April it delivered on that, suspending all deliveries until further notice.

Washington has since stopped accepting more Turkish pilots for training in the U.S. and halted delivery of equipment related to the program.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence also declared on February 16 the Trump administration has “made it clear that we will not stand idly by while NATO allies purchase weapons from our adversaries.”

Reuters reports the U.S. has looked to impose sanctions on Ankara under its Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), the possibility of which has spooked investors and helped cause a selloff in the lira this year.

Demir said such sanctions could have a brief impact on Turkey’s defense industry. “Our defense industry produces parts for the F-35, so in the event of sanctions being imposed, our industry would experience a rough patch, but we’ll then get passed this,” he said.”

  12. Migrant Transport NGOs Spending Millions Per Year on Operations (breitbart, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/06/21/migrant-transport-ngos-spending-millions-per-year/

“While many migrant transport NGOs have ceased operations over the last few years, a report claims that millions of euros are still being spent by those operating in the Mediterranean.

The number of NGOs operating off the coast of Libya has dwindled since populist Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini closed the country’s ports in 2018, but two NGOs remain — and according to a report from newspaper Il Giornale, and they have a combined spend of millions per year.

German NGO Sea-Watch, which currently has a ship with 42 migrants off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa, took in 1.7 million euros last year and 1.6 million the year before.

In 2017 alone, the NGO is estimated to have spent around 1.9 million euros including 456,000 euros to purchase the vessel Sea-Watch 3 and another 328,000 to keep the ship fuelled and operational.

Sea-Watch was allocated 421,000 euros towards the ship Sea-Watch 2 and another 70,000 for the fuel and maintenance of Sea-Watch 1. The NGO also has a small aircraft named Moonbird based in Lampedusa, used to locate ships in the Mediterranean, which they paid 359,000 euros to begin operations.

In 2018, the figures were similar, although the NGO has only deployed Sea-Watch 3 at sea since late 2017. Between January and October of 2018, Sea-Watch 3 cost 89,000 euros in diesel fuel, 102,000 euros for “external services”, 77,000 euros for maintenance, and 33,000 euros for legal fees.

Part of the legal fees are likely to cover the trial of Sea-Watch 3 captain Pia Klemp, who has been brought up on charges of aiding illegal migration and could face up to 20 years in an Italian prison.

Mediterranea Saving Humans is the other migrant transport NGO still operating in the area, with their vessel the Mare Jonio. The NGO has so far received 98,115 euros from “Italian civil society organisations” and other individuals, along with a credit line of 465,000 euros from the Banca Etica bank.

From October 2018 to March of this year, the group claims to have received another 518,533 euros from various crowdfunding sources.

According to the organisation’s website, the spending of the NGO is much higher than the number of donations and lines of credit, standing at 1.2 million euros as of March, spending 360,000 euros on the Mare Jonio and another 554,605 for six months of operating costs.

As with Sea-Watch, Mediterranea Saving Humans is also facing an investigation from Italian authorities with its head Luca Casarini being interrogated in April in regards to accusations of helping aid illegal migration.”

  13. Sweden Opens Door to Increased Chain Migration (breitbart, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/06/21/swedish-parliament-opens-door-increased-chain-migration/

“The Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, has voted in favour of making it easier for Syrian migrants and refugees to bring family members to the country, with only two parties voting against the proposal.

All of the parties in the Riksdag voted for the measure except for the centre-right Moderates and the populist Sweden Democrats (SD).

The two parties also voted against the so-called “high school law” which has allowed thousands of Afghan migrants to remain in the country, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.

Along with making “family reunifications” for Syrians easier, the Riksdag voted to extend a temporary residency permits order which was enacted during the height of the migrant crisis in 2015.

The Left party opposed the extension of the order — but only so it could argue that Sweden should return to an even more lax asylum policy, as was the case prior to the 2015 crisis.

Justice Minister Morgan Johannson commended the conservative Christian Democrats for supporting the family reunification motion in the Riksdag but was criticised by Moderates migration spokeswoman Maria Malmer Stenergard who said that Sweden had not yet recovered from the 2015 crisis.

“I’m even more worried after the debate, it’s clear that Morgan Johansson doesn’t see the problems,” Stenergard said.

The Swedish Migration Board predicts that the country will see around 8,000 new arrivals between 2019 and 2021 through chain migration under the family reunification programme.

A further 30,000 migrants living with a residence permit in Sweden that expires this year could also be eligible for family reunification, but must apply and be granted an extended temporary residency permit.

According to the Migration Board, 132,696 residency permits were given out last year with tens of thousands awarded to family reunifications.

As a result of mass migration, Sweden saw the second-largest population growth of any country in the European Union in 2016, and in 2018 it was revealed that migrants also have much higher birthrates than native Swedes who are choosing to have children later in life…”

  14. Revealed: Islamist Infiltration of French Public Services (breitbart, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/06/21/new-survey-reveals-islamist-infiltration-french-public-services/

“French media have leaked details from a report on Islamic extremism within the French public service, claiming that many in the public sector are concerned about Islamist infiltration.

The new report, which has been compiled by MPs Éric Diard of the conservative Republicans and Éric Poulliat of President Emmanuel Macron’s La République En Marche! (LREM/Republic on the Move), questioned senior officials, researchers, and workers such as police and firefighters about Islamic radicalisation.

According to leaked information from the report given to French news magazine Le Point, many of those interviewed by the MPs expressed concern over the issue, with one of the most poignant stories coming from a trade unionist from the RATP, the company in charge of the public transportation system in Paris. The trade unionist claimed that “premises are forbidden to women in terminals” and added that “practising Muslims are targeting non-practising female believers”.

Police also said that they had difficulty dealing with radicalised officers after they were discovered, citing a lack of legislation to help them dismiss those found to be radicalised.

Last year, it was revealed that a police officer in charge of the security for the staff of the satirical Charlie Hebdo magazine may have become radicalised after viewing radical Islamist material.

In January 2015, the offices of Charlie Hebdo were attacked by radical Islamic terrorists who killed 12 people, the majority of the victims being staff at the magazine.

In 2017, it was also revealed that despite being on the terror watch list, known in France as the S-File, another individual was able to become a police officer.

Nicolas Lerner, the head of the General Directorate for Internal Security DGSI, France’s domestic intelligence agency, also warned that religious spaces are no longer the only sources of radicalisation and added that educational environments “requires a certain vigilance” in combatting radicalisation.””

  19. Massive explosion at Philadelphia oil refinery: reports

This is the moment a massive fireball erupted from a 150-year-old oil refinery in south Philadelphia when a vat of butane exploded early Friday — in a spectacle that could be seen from miles away and felt as far as South Jersey, according to reports.

The blaze began at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions Refining Complex shortly after 4:20 a.m., according to police.

Workers were on site at the time, but were far enough away to avoid serious harm, authorities told NBC Philadelphia.

Video captured by Twitter user @nicetownbean showed the flames billowing from the complex, and then exploding into massive clouds of fire and smoke that turned the pre-dawn sky orange.

  20. Los Angeles wants to tax landlords for vacant units

Just when you think things in the city of Los Angeles couldn’t be any more dysfunctional, they manage to take the cake yet again. The City Council is seriously kicking around a new tax on property owners for leaving homes vacant.

Just think of it as the “Tom Bodett tax” — either landlords leave the light on for ya, or they pay up.

City Councilmen Mike Bonin, Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Paul Koretz and David Ryu have asked city staffers to come up with a plan for an “empty homes penalty” or vacancy tax.

“No bed in this city should be empty when people are being forced to sleep on pavement. … Empty-home penalties encourage landlords to keep people housed, and they help raise needed funds to create more affordable housing. This is an important tool for addressing one of the root causes of homelessness in L.A., and it is a step we desperately need to take,” Bonin said.

Bonin claims that there are over 100,000 vacant units in Los Angeles, and about 60,000 homeless people. So just give every homeless person a vacant place to live and voila! No homeless.

The problem with this so-called solution to homelessness is that the lights may be on, but nobody’s home.

Penalizing the owners of vacant units is a typical big-government solution to an economic issue disguised as a remedy for homelessness. When all you have is a hammer, after a while everything starts to look like a nail.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has signed legislation clearing the way for Briarwood Presbyterian Church and its affiliated school, as well as a private academy in Madison County, to establish their own police forces.

The law passed during the most recent legislative sessions permits the church, Briarwood Presbyterian School and Madison Academy in North Alabama to hire police officers who are able to make arrests if crimes are committed on their properties.

  22. Iran claims downed U.S. drone was in its territorial waters, FAA issues air advisory

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 6:48 AM PT — Friday, June 21, 2019

Iran is continuing to insist the downed U.S. drone was in its territorial waters at the time of the attack. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif took to Twitter Thursday to release what he claims are the coordinates of the drone at the moment it was shot down.

Zarif stressed the U.S. has violated its airspace, and released maps to allegedly support his claims. The veracity of the maps could not be independently verified by One America News. Iranian officials also released video footage of Thursday’s incident.

    • Commander: Drone Attack Message to US, Iran Could Down P8 Aircraft with 35 Onboard

TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said that his forces could have shot down a US P8 aircraft with 35 on board which was violating Iran’s airspace, but decided to shoot down the drone to only send a message to Washington.

“We intended to send a message to American terrorists in the region,” Brigadier General Hajizadeh said on Friday, adding that his forces had also traced a military P8 aircraft violating the airspace of Iran.

“Along with the American drone was an American P8 aircraft with 35 on board, and it was also violating our airspace and we could have downed it too,” he said, adding, “But we did not do [shoot down] it, because our aim was to warn the terrorist forces of the US.”

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force shot down an American spy drone over the territorial waters of Iran near the Strait of Hormuz at dawn on Thursday.

The United States had confirmed that one of its reconnaissance plane was shot down by Iraniain air defenses, but denied that it intruded into Tehran’s airspace at the time.

On Thursday evening, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that his country has retrieved parts of the US Global Hawk that was shot down on Thursday morning from the country’s territorial waters, rejecting Washington’s claim that the aircraft was targeted in international waters.

“[The] US drone took off from UAE in stealth mode and violated Iranian airspace,” Zarif wrote on Twitter on Thursday night, adding that the Global Hawk drone “was targeted near… Kouh-e Mobarak” region in the Central district of Jask in Hormuzgan province after the aircraft violated Iran’s airspace.

Zarif even provided the coordinates where the US aircraft was intercepted, and added, “We’ve retrieved sections of the US military drone in OUR territorial waters where it was shot down.”

In an earlier tweet, Zarif stated that Iran “will take this US new aggression to [the] UN and show that the US is lying about international waters”.

The Iranin foreign minister noted that Tehran does not want war, “but will zealously defend our skies, land and waters”.

Commander of the IRGC Major General Hossein Salami stressed that the move should alert Washington officials to stay away.

The incident sent “a clear message” to the US and other enemies that Iran will show a firm and crushing response to any aggression, Salami stated.

“Borders are our red lines and any enemy which violates them will not go back home and will be annihilated. The only way for enemies is to respect Iran’s territorial integrity and national interests,” the major general noted.

    • Iran: Revolutionary Guard Corps display wreckage of alleged US drone

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) displayed the wreckage of an alleged US spy drone in Tehran on Friday, which the IRGC Aerospace Force claim they shot down a day earlier, after it purportedly breached the Iranian airspace.

Commander of the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (AFAGIR), Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, said that the US drone’s wreckage “is an [evidence] of the US encroachment on Iran’s airspace territory.”

Hajizadeh went on to say, “This is not a passenger aircraft, but a spy drone. It is the most important, the most expensive, state-of-the-art spy aircraft in the world. Well, what if we did the same to the US? What would be their reaction towards us?”

According to the Iranian commander, the US drone was warned “four times” by the IRGC Aerospace Force. He noted that “what we have done was our duty,” adding that defending the country’s national security “is our redline.”

On Thursday, the IRGC said that the US spy drone violated the Iranian territorial airspace before it was shot down by the IRGC Aerospace Force in the southern province of Hormozgan. Washington has maintained that the drone was in international airspace.

  23. Trump says he aborted retaliatory strike to spare Iranian lives

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he had aborted a military strike on Iran because such a response to Tehran’s downing of an unmanned U.S. surveillance drone would have caused a disproportionate loss of life.

In a series of early morning tweets, Trump said U.S. economic sanctions against Iran were having an impact and more were imposed late on Thursday following the destruction of the U.S. drone by an Iranian surface-to-air missile.

Trump said the plan was to hit three different sites in response to the drone’s downing, and that he was told 150 people would have died.

“Ten minutes before the strike I stopped it, not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone. I am in no hurry, our military is rebuilt, new, and ready to go, by far the best in the world,” Trump tweeted.

Earlier on Friday, Iranian officials told Reuters that Tehran had received a message from Trump warning that a U.S. attack on Iran was imminent but saying that he was against war and wanted talks on a range of issues.

News of that message, delivered through Oman overnight, came shortly after the New York Times reported that Trump had called off air strikes targeting Iranian radar and missile batteries at the last minute.

  24. ‘I Love Thee, China’: North Korea woos Xi in lavish state visit

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed that strengthening bilateral ties, at a time of “serious and complicated” international affairs, was good for regional peace, North Korean state media said on Friday.

Xi arrived in Pyongyang on Thursday for a two-day visit, the first by a Chinese leader in 14 years, and received a lavish welcome that included a performance of the song “I Love Thee, China” and thousands of people holding up placards that formed a picture of Xi’s face and the Chinese flag.

China is the North’s only major ally and Xi’s visit is aimed at bolstering Pyongyang against pressure from U.N. sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs and a breakdown in denuclearization talks with the United States.

The visit also comes a week before Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump meet at the G20 summit in Osaka amid an ongoing trade dispute.

Video footage and photos released by North Korean state media showed Kim and Xi with wide smiles at Pyongyang airport. They drove through the streets of the capital in an open top limousine, and later attended a “Mass Games” propaganda show.

The show – titled “Invincible Socialism” – was specially prepared for Xi’s goodwill visit and included songs such as “No New China without Communist Party” and “I Love Thee, China”, the KCNA news agency said.

One sign in Chinese read: “Happy to see you Grandpa Xi”.

  25. ‘Drone’ shootdown by Iran: This time it’s a big deal; *UPDATE* Graphic presentations from Iran; CENTCOM’s version
    By J.E. Dyer June 20, 2019

[See second/third UPDATE at bottom of text. – J.E.]

Iran was the first to announce having shot down a U.S. “drone” on Thursday, near the Strait of Hormuz, but the Pentagon quickly confirmed it.

In the time it has taken to assemble this post, President Trump has come out — after a meeting with his military staff at the White House — and suggested that someone in Iran was “loose and stupid” and may have shot the aircraft down unintentionally. That would indicate Trump isn’t anxious to pull a trigger, which I’m not going to jump on one way or another. He may know something the public doesn’t about the Iranian chain of command and intent attending this event. (I tend to doubt that, given the vague and speculative nature of his wording, and the unlikelihood of rogue shootdowns by assets under the command of the IRGC and hence the Ayatollah Khamenei.)

But Trump will know, as the military does, that this is a significant escalation.

    https://libertyunyielding.com/2019/06/20/drone-shootdown-by-iran-this-time-its-a-big-deal/

Richard: There are many important take away’s from this article.

    1) There is independent civil aviation radar recordings confirming that the drone was in International Air apace when shot down.

    2) There have been many short range missile attacks on US assets in Iraq in the past few days.

    3) We really don’t have enough data to speculate on why PT called off the air strike. He has access to a lot more info then we do so we need to wait to see what is going on behind the scenes.

    4) We can all agree this is a real humongous deal that has the potential of exploding into a major war.

    • There are a bunch of people talking about what will happen if/when we retaliate against Iran. While a major war is a real threat most of the people doing the analysis are ignoring reality. Yes China, Russia, Pakistan and Afghanistan will turn against us. There is little to no chance that Japan, India and the other small nations in the Far East will join the fight against us. We are the only thing that is keeping China from attacking them, also most of them are having problems to one degree or another with their internal Islamic population or are forbidding Moslems to enter their nations.

As I am writing this I am listening to the “China Uncensored” hour long video about the Hong Kong protests. As I said before we have to keep in mind that China might have ask Iran to draw the worlds attention to the Iranian sector to give China a freer hand in Hong Kong. One reason I am saying this is one person has a sign saying the people on the mainland are supporting the protesters. The CCP may decide that unless the crush the protests they will lose control of China. I don’t know how much of a stretch that idea is but keep it in mind. Everyone (inclucing me) tend to think of all of the problems as separate problems requiring separate actions. In reality many of them are related and there is a close relationship and they are both in economic trouble because of US sanctions.

  26. Former Equality Chief: Islamophobia Definition a ‘Bullies’ Charter’ for Censorious Muslims (breitbart, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/06/21/former-equality-chief-islamophobia-definition-a-bullies-charter-for-censorious-muslims/

“Britain’s former equality tsar Trevor Phillips OBE has warned the sweeping new definition of “Islamophobia” is a “bullies’ charter” for Muslims inclined to censor criticism of Islam and Islamic practices.

Phillips, a former Labour politician and son of African-heritage migrants from British Guiana — now Guyana — who served as head of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) quango and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) which succeeded it from 2003 to 2012, warned that the definition would “make it illegitimate to criticise anyone who uses the fact that they are a Muslim or defending Muslims to make it impossible to contest their point of view”.

The definition, adopted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims, defines Islamophobia as “rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness”, and has been endorsed by MP including London mayor Sadiq Khan, anti-Brexit Change UK (CUK) leader Anna Soubry, Labour’s David Lammy, and his controversial colleague Naz Shah, who once ‘liked’ and retweeted a social media post suggesting Muslim rape gang victims should “shut their mouths for the good of diversity”.

Phillips cautioned that “What’s actually happening here is that the definition is the foundation of a bully’s charter.”

“You get a university or local authority to adopt this extremely vague, wide-ranging definition. Anyone who says something that could be presented as in any way related to Muslims can then be shouted down,” he explained.

“Essentially they are told they are Islamophobic, that they are bringing the institution, council or Government department into disrepute under their employment contract. That makes them sackable.”

The Government has yet to formally adopt the definition, with Equalities Office officials noting that the law “defines ‘race’ as comprising colour, nationality and national or ethnic origins, none of which would encompass a Muslim or an Islamic practice”, according to The Telegraph.

Even the usually politically correct National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) has expressed “some concerns about the proposed definition of Islamophobia”, suggesting it was “too broad”, “could cause confusion for officers enforcing it”, “be used to challenge legitimate free speech on the historical or theological actions of Islamic states”, and ultimately “undermine counter-terrorism powers, which seek to tackle extremism or prevent terrorism.””

  28. Russia: FSB detain 12 Muslim terrorists during counter-terrorism op in North Caucasus

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) carried out raids against suspected members of the Takfir wal-Hijra radical Islamist group in the North Caucasus republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, footage released on Friday shows.

The officers seized multiple weapons, CD disks with extremism-related material and extremist literature during the searches.

“Members of the criminal group were spreading ideas of radical Islam, they made attempts to oust municipal officials and had plans to create on the territory of the North Caucasus a state with Sharia form of government. Twelve members of the extremist organisation were detained, one of them in Moscow. All of them are residents of the Karachay-Cherkessia Republic,” a statement from FSB said.

      • These busts in the Caucasus really hit home. Hard.
Maybe because they speak Russian, look Russian – like people I know and love.
Maybe because the arrests are so no-nonsense, compared to the obfuscation we’re familiar with in the West.

And Russia is loaded with dangerous tards. Numbers can’t be trusted, but Moscow might have the largest tardish population of any city in Europe.

  29. So, what should we do with the Monica Hesses of this world?
By Howard Portnoy June 21, 2019

If you don’t know the name Monica Hesse, don’t berate yourself unduly. I never heard of her myself until I saw her byline above an opinion piece that ran in yesterday’s Washington Post. I still don’t know much about her except that, according to her Post bio, she was educated at Bryn Mawr College and Johns Hopkins University, both prestigious institutions of higher learning, and is a columnist for the paper’s style section. I also surmise, based on the tone and tenor of her column, that she suffers from a god complex.

Kyle Kashuv, the antagonist of her op-ed, which is sanctimoniously titled “So, what should we do with the Kyle Kashuvs of this world?” is a survivor of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting who was admitted to Harvard University before he was un-admitted on June 3. The motive for the university’s recission of his acceptance, he acknowledges, was the airing of “egregious and callous comments classmates and I made privately … when I was 16 years old … in an attempt to be as extreme and shocking as possible.”

Once again the oh so tolerant left shows that if they don’t like you you don’t have any rights. They have tried and convicted him base on a stupid teen age stunt and are now going to ensure that he never gets any more schooling and will never get a job that isn’t pushing a broom.

  30. Oregon Senator Doubles Down Against Out-of-Control Lib Governor: ‘Come Heavily Armed’

urmoil between the Oregon governor and the state’s legislature has officially reached shocking new heights.

In order to prevent the passage of a far-left climate change bill, Republicans have said that they are “prepared to take actions” if Democratic Gov. Kate Brown gets law enforcement involved, who will supposedly force, — via arresting — conservative members to the state legislature to vote.

Republican Sen. Brian Boquist implied in a shocking video captured by Pat Dooris from KGW8 news that he’s willing to take drastic action should state troopers come to arrest him.

“This is what I told the superintendent,” Boquist said, referring to OSP Superintendent Travis Hampton. “Send bachelors and come heavily armed. I’m not going to be a political prisoner in the state of Oregon. It’s just that simple.”

  32. Italian President Stands Against Salvini: Welcoming Refugees a ‘Duty’ (breitbart, Jun 21, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/06/21/italian-president-welcoming-refugees-duty/

“During a speech for World Refugee Day, Italian President Sergio Mattarella claimed that all Italians have a “duty” to welcome refugees.

The Italian president stressed that Italy has a “high moral and legal commitment” to accepting refugees citing it as a core principle of the Italian constitution, Il Giornale reports.

“The refugees remind us every day, forcefully, of stories of suffering, discrimination, separation from families, lands, and roots,” Mattarella said.

“Every people in its history has been the victim of tragedies of this nature. The serious difficulties that afflict peoples of regions even close to us deserve careful reflection on the causes of these tragedies and on the answers they require,” he added.

While the Italian President said it was a duty for Italians to welcome refugees he also admitted that Italy should not act alone saying action “must be coordinated and shared by the international community and, above all, at the European level”, arguing that the European Union must adopt a Europe-wide policy.

He went on to add that the EU “must be a protagonist to develop a common policy that is able to mitigate conflicts and support the security and development needs of the peoples most exposed to humanitarian crises, through a structured partnership with the countries and communities that host refugees and asylum seekers”.

The comments come in stark contrast to those often made by populist interior minister and de-facto Italian leader Matteo Salvini who has closed Italy’s ports to migrant transport NGO ships and reduced the number of incoming migrants by upwards of 90 per cent.

Salvini’s policies have also led to a sharp decrease in the number of migrants drowning in the Mediterranean sea.

Mattarella has previously made it known he is not the biggest fan of the current populist coalition government, having initially rejected the coalition between Salvini’s League and the Five Star Movement in May year.

Following the initial rejection, many Italians took to social media to call for the impeachment of Mattarella.”

  33. Toronto Sun – MANDEL: Mentally-ill attacker who targeted Canadian soldiers a terrorist — Crown

A man with schizophrenia who attacked soldiers at a North York recruitment centre in 2016 is mentally ill, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a mentally ill terrorist.

Federal prosecutors will go to the Ontario Court of Appeal next week to argue Ayanle Hassan Ali should be retried after a judge found that the anti-terrorism section of the Criminal Code enacted after 9/11 isn’t designed to capture a “lone wolf” involved in terror activity and acquitted him on nine terrorism charges.

“Lone-wolf terrorists are a serious problem in Canada and abroad and their recent ‘successes’ may inspire others,” prosecutors argue in their factum filed with the appeal court ahead of Monday’s hearing. “The trial judge’s interpretation impedes the ability to arrest and charge the lone wolf.”

Regardless of the outcome of the appeal, little would change for Ali, who’s currently being held in the secure forensic unit at Hamilton’s St. Joseph’s Healthcare for treatment. The Crown agrees he’s mentally ill and should be found NCR on the terror charges. The difference, though, is that he would now be labelled a terrorist.

“The trial judge’s approach would erase the distinction between lone wolf terrorists and ordinary criminals,” prosecutors said. “A lone actor who commits an act of serious violence for a religious or ideological purpose, intending to intimidate the public, should be stigmatized with a Section 83 terrorism conviction.”

The attack lasted less than a minute.

On Mar. 14, 2016, Ali forced his way into the Yonge St. recruiting centre intent on becoming a jihadi martyr. “I have a licence to kill, I have a green light to kill,” Ali had written in his diary. “One soldier is all it takes, just one.”

He punched the first soldier repeatedly in the head, took a large kitchen knife from his folder and lunged at him, leaving a three-inch gash in the corporal’s arm.

When a sergeant rushed out of her office, Ali gave chase and narrowly missed slicing the back of her neck. He then tried to slash and stab at another sergeant, who in the chaos, had slipped on spilled coffee and fallen to the ground.

With his first blow, the blade hit the floor. Ali then continued stabbing him in the head and torso, but luckily, was now using the wrong end of his weapon.

After he was disarmed and restrained, Ali “appeared to be laughing, smiling, and giggling, and on something.” Others describe him as “not present” and “lost in the clouds.”

He told a paramedic Allah sent him “to kill people.” He told forensic psychiatrists who later examined him that soldiers were a “legitimate target.”

Ali was charged with three counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of assault causing bodily harm and one count of carrying a weapon — all “for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with a terrorist group.”

Last year, Justice Ian MacDonnell acquitted him on all terror charges and not criminally responsible for the lesser included offences of attempted murder, assault and weapons offences. “The intention of Parliament in enacting (the relevant terror legislation) was not to capture the kind of lone-wolf criminal behaviour engaged in by the defendant,” MacDonnell said.

Ali’s lawyers argue that the trial judge got it right and the Crown’s appeal argument is absurd and should be dismissed. “From both a common sense and legal perspective, this was a just result. Mr. Ali is mentally ill — not a terrorist,” they wrote in their factum.

This isn’t the only decision regarding Ali under appeal by the Crown.

Federal prosecutors are also contesting a decision by the Ontario Review Board last July that would eventually allow Ali to go unaccompanied to Mohawk College across the street from the psychiatric hospital.

His psychiatrist described Ali as a “kind, careful, considerate, soft spoken person” but conceded his “risk includes his potential to act out on political or radical ideas and that there is no treatment for that.”

Funny, but isn’t that the definition of a terrorist?

  34. MEK – People’s Mujahedin of Iran supporters march in Washington DC

… the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK) march on the streets of Washington, DC, on Friday, June 21.

The rally is set to show solidarity with the anti-government protests reportedly ongoing in Iran since December 2017, while also coming amid worsening relations between Iran and the US.

The escalating tensions between Iran and the US began after the latter accused Iran of being responsible for the attacks on several oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

    • MEK is no good.

Their tweets and videos of protests supposedly from inside Iran are bogus. It’s hard to sort out MEK-sourced junk from genuine material, but we should try.

Unfortunately they’re the best mobilized in the West, great at organizing high-profile events. A sinister cult that has very little support inside Iran, and is definitely NOT a friend of ours.

Is twitter personality “Heshmat Alevi” a real person or a composite, MEK entity?. Everybody quotes him, from The Jerusalem Post to social media Influencers (vectors of disinformation).

      The Mojahedin e-Khalq Aren’t America’s Friends
And even Iranians who hate their current regime don’t want the MEK.

      • There’s a large, regime-friendly Iranian population established in the West. Including dual citizens and children of people who left Iran 40 years ago.

They are Twisted-Raghead OPERATIVES. Several worked in 0’s administration at senior levels of staff. There’a a lobby that calls itself National Iranian American Council (NIAC, imitation American-Israeli AIPAC).

This infiltration is much in evidence now. The media is either in the tank or useful idiots for the Death-to-America enemy. NIAC’s Trita Parsi is given extensive exposure on CNN, maybe elsewhere, too.

  35. Jordan: Hundreds rally in Amman against Trump’s Bahrain workshop

Hundreds of Jordanians took to the streets of the capital Amman on Friday to protest against the Bahrain economic workshop, part of the so-called ‘Deal of the Century’ proposed by US President Donald Trump as a solution for the decades-old Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Footage shows demonstrators, both men and women, waving Jordanian flags and Muslim Brotherhood flags marching on the streets chanting slogans rejecting the proposal.

Ali Abu al-Sukkar, a leader of the Islamic Movement dedicated the march “to the mercy of the martyr Mohammed Morsi, where he had courageous positions in Palestine and Gaza” adding that the march is a rejection of the Bahrain conference “where the Arab governments are weak, and to be with the people and with the Palestinian cause.”

The US is slated to hold an international economic workshop in Manama, Bahrain on 25 and 26 June seeking to encourage investment in the Palestinian territories as the first part of Donald Trump’s Middle East peace plan.

Traian B?sescu, a former commercial navy ship captain, was president of Romania from 2004 to 2014.

B?sescu was recently elected as an MEP as part of the European People’s Party from Romania.

Earlier this week Traian B?sescu slammed EU inaction on migration in what he sees as the organization’s inability to protect its borders.

Traian Basescu wants to use military fleets to stop illegal immigrants from invading Europe.

  38. Leveraging Iran

BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 1,205, June 21, 2019

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Mainstream analysis of the current crisis in US-Iran relations revolves around “maximum pressure” sanctions and potential American military contingencies. There is another move, however, involving a unique set of knights on the regional chessboard – and one that comes straight out of Tehran’s own playbook.

The Trump administration’s sanctions and shows of force against Iran have thus far only elicited the usual defiance and threats from Tehran, which is reportedly accelerating production of enriched uranium, is not in compliance with the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) according to the Americans who walked out of it, and is still seeking illegal technology for WMD. Meanwhile, the Europeans led by Germany continue to appease the Islamist regime in Tehran, despite the revelation that its Hezbollah proxy was engaging in terror activity in the UK shortly after the conclusion of the 2015 JCPOA. Despite wishful thinking, insightful analysis indicates that sanctions are unlikely to cause Iran to behave, break Hezbollah, or affect Iraqi proxies funded by Baghdad. Predictions of a major US-Iran conflict are nothing new.

Pressure on Iran does work, but it needs to be the right kind of pressure. There are plenty of kinetic options for targeting Iranian assets and proxies without ground forces, but the administration does not want war in the Gulf. Tehran knows this and is continuing its malign activity in the grey zone of plausible deniability, using proxies and covert operations.

    • Deterring Iran After the Nuclear Deal: Report Launch and Panel Discussion
      Friday, March 31, 2017 10:00 am – 11:30 am
      CSIS Headquarters

Although the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear program is working, the United States has largely been unable or unwilling to deter Iran’s incremental extension of regional power and threshold testing in the Middle East. A new report by the International Security Program at CSIS, “Deterring Iran After the Nuclear Deal,” seeks to better understand and analyze Iran’s strategy, motivations, and military and paramilitary development; explores a set of policy pathways for the United States to counter challenges from Iran; and provides a recommended Iran deterrence strategy for the Trump Administration and U.S. Congress to consider.

Join us for the report launch of “Deterring Iran After the Nuclear Deal,” featuring a panel discussion on Iran’s regional activities post-JCPOA, implications for the Middle East, and policy options for the Trump administration and U.S. Congress to counter Iran’s destabilizing behavior and capability development.

  39. Border Patrol chief: ‘Family units’ from 52 countries have illegally crossed the border
Melanie Arter, CNSNews June 20, 2019

[Ed. – This doesn’t just happen. There are only 34 sovereign countries in the Americas other than the U.S. And very few of the illegals are from south of the Isthmus of Panama. For this many people from all over the world to be storming our border, there has to be coordinated incentivization and organization going on.]

Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost: Family Units from 52 Countries Have Illegally Crossed the Border

(CNSNews.com) – U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost told Congress Thursday that in addition to the Central American countries that make up the Northern Triangle, illegal immigrants from 52 countries have illegally crossed the U.S. southern border.

“Smugglers falsely advertise a safe journey to the border, misleading families that anyone who arrives with a child will not be deported under current U.S. policies. While smugglers primarily target the Northern Triangle, family units from 52 countries have illegally crossed the southern border so far this year, Provost said during opening testimony at a House Homeland Security subcommittee hearing.
