Gunmen have killed six people including a priest as Mass was being celebrated in a church in Dablo in northern Burkina Faso, officials say.
The attackers, said to number between 20 and 30, then burned down the church.
The town’s mayor, Ousmane Zongo, said that there was panic as other buildings were burned down and a health centre looted.
Jihadist violence has flared in Burkina Faso since 2016, and this is the third attack on a church in five weeks.

Sri Lanka: Muslim-owned businesses attacked in Kuliyapitiya
The Sri Lankan government blocked access to some social media sites and police imposed a curfew after a mosque and shops owned by Muslims were attacked, in Kuliyapitiya, Kurunegala District, on Sunday and Monday.
Footage from Sunday night shows a shack that reportedly belonged to Muslim residents on fire, as well as men on site arguing and shouting as police tried to control the situation.
Footage from Monday shows an increased police presence on the ground as well as a shop that was reportedly vandalised during the unrest.
The social media ban was reportedly put in place on Monday, blocking access to networks and messaging apps, such as Facebook and Twitter, after a dispute between Christians and Muslims started online.
A curfew was imposed on Sunday until the early hours of Monday morning as a precaution to avoid further attacks. According to reports, extra security forces were also deployed in the city.

Threat of more militant attacks contained – army chief
Sri Lanka’s army commander Mahesh Senanayake said the threat of more militant attacks has been contained and the security services have dismantled most of the network linked to the Easter Sunday bombings.
In an interview with Reuters on Friday, Senanayake said that investigators have established that the plotters had links to Daesh, but added that the authorities are still trying to establish how deep those contacts were.
“There is a link internationally, so we are working on those lines,” he said.
“Definitely there is an IS [Daesh] link. That doesn’t mean it was a direct IS [Daesh] hit. But we are trying to establish how deep it is in order to plan our [military] operations.”
The army chief said he expects the country to return to normal within days and wants the military to head back to their barracks soon.
Sri Lanka slaps controls on mosques
The Sri Lankan government on Friday ordered mosques to clamp down on extremists and to submit copies of sermons in new fallout from the Easter suicide bombings that left 258 dead.
The Ministry of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs said mosques must not be used for radicalising congregations.
“In view of the prevailing situation in the country, the ministry directs all trustees of mosques not to engage in or permit any gathering to promote or propagate hatred or extremism in any form,” the ministry said.
It said all mosques must submit copies of sermons given within their premises.
Country is safe – president
Sri Lanka’s president says “99 percent” of the suspects in the Easter Sunday attacks on churches and hotels have been arrested and their explosive materials seized.
President Maithripala Sirisena said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that Sri Lanka is now safe for tourists.
It’s been just over two weeks since a group of Sri Lankan militants carried out suicide bombings at churches full of people celebrating Easter services and at luxury hotels.
More than 250 people were killed in the Daesh group-claimed attacks.
Sirisena said he was not told of near-specific advance information from Indian intelligence sources about the plot and the attackers.
He told AP that the violence wasn’t a problem specific to Sri Lanka but rather “global terrorism.”
Threat persists despite arrests – prime minister
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament that his Buddhist-majority nation was a victim of extremists and needed international support to deal with the persisting threat.
“The danger is not over, we are now a victim of global terrorism,” Wickremesinghe said.
“Even if we have arrested or killed every terrorist responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks, extremists abroad can still cause trouble for us,” the PM said.
“We need intelligence sharing with foreign partners to deal with this challenge.”
Easter bombers killed or arrested – police chief
Sri Lankan security authorities have either killed or arrested all the militants responsible for the Easter suicide bombings that left 257 people dead, police chief Chandana Wickramaratne said on Tuesday.
Police have accounted for every individual involved in the April 21 attacks on three churches and three luxury hotels, Wickramaratne said in an audio statement.
“All those who organised and carried out the suicide bomb attack have died or is in our custody,” he said.
“The two bomb experts of the group have been killed. We have seized the explosives they had stored for future attacks.”
Schools reopen amid fears of more attacks
State schools in Sri Lanka resumed classes on Monday amid tight security after the Easter Sunday bombings, but many anxious parents kept their children at home over fears of more attacks.
Soldiers conducted a security sweep of schools on Sunday after state institutions were asked to re-open on a staggered basis.
Most classrooms were near empty despite the tight security and military patrols.
“I have decided not to send my son to school until the country returns to normal,” said Sujeeva Dissanayake, whose son goes to the state-run Asoka College in Colombo.
She and other parents were at the school to help provide security.
Mid-to-upper stream classes resumed on Monday, to be followed by lower grades at a later date.
Private schools, including Catholic institutions, remained closed.
Police discover suspected training camp for militants
Sri Lankan police on Sunday discovered a 10-acre camp in the eastern town of Kattankudy, where militants linked to the deadly Easter attacks are believed to have practiced shooting and bomb-making.
The walled terrain is nestled in a poor residential area on the outskirts of the home town of Zahran Hashim, who is believed to have been a key player in plotting the April 21 attacks.
The narrow, sandy plot is dotted with a cinderblock four-storey watchtower, as well as mango trees, a chicken coop and a goat shed.
“They wanted to show this place was normal. If someone comes to see, it looks like a farm. But what they were doing is terrorism,” said a senior police officer in the Batticaloa area, asking to remain anonymous because he was not authorised to speak to media.
Police found bullet holes in the wall on one side of the grounds, as well as long tubes suspected of holding bombs, the officer said.
Two owners of the plot of land have been arrested, the officer said.

Sri Lankan Catholics are celebrating Sunday Mass in their homes for a second week as churches remain closed after reports of possible fresh attacks by militants.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo, offered a televised Mass from his residence that was attended mostly by priests and nuns.
A letter from Pope Francis addressed to him was read out at the end of the service in which the pontiff says he prayed that “hearts hardened by hatred may yield to His will for peace and reconciliation among all his children.”
City near capital under curfew after communal violence
A city near Sri Lanka’s capital was placed under curfew by police on Sunday, following clashes between Muslim and Christian mobs two weeks after suicide bombings left 257 people dead.
A senior police officer said the restrictions were imposed to prevent an escalation of violence after attacks occurred in Negombo – north of Colombo – where over 100 people died in a church bombing.
“About two motorcycles and a three-wheel taxi had been damaged in the clashes,” the police officer told AFP. “We declared a curfew till 7:00 am (0130 GMT) to contain the unrest.”
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The country’s main international airport is located in the area, but police said there was no disruption to airport traffic.
The officer said an investigation was underway into the clashes, the first violence between Muslims and Christians since the Easter Sunday attacks targeting three churches and three luxury hotels in the country.

Also last week, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell filed for cloture to end debate on the nomination of Ken Lee, one of President Trump’s currently pending nominees to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. A Christchurch man has pleaded guilty to sharing a livestream video of last month’s Christchurch terror attack that left 50 people dead.
Phillip Arps, 44, pleaded guilty to distributing the video, which shows a shooter gunning down worshippers at Al-Noor mosque in Christchurch New Zealand on March 15, 2019.
Terrorist, Brenton Tarrant, used Facebook live to broadcast the 17-minute attack which left 50 people dead and 50 injured. He was later apprehended and charged.
Arps will be sentenced on June 14 and faces a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison for the crime of sharing the footage.
New Zealanders can also face up to 10 years prison for “knowingly” possessing a copy of the Christchurch shooting livestream or the shooter’s manifesto which he left in the wake of his attack. Corporations, including web hosts, face an additional $200,000 AUD fine under the same law for allowing users to have and distribute the video.

ROME (Reuters) – A close aide to Pope Francis has drawn the ire of Italy’s anti-immigrant Interior Minister Matteo Salvini by climbing down a manhole to restore electricity to hundreds of homeless people living in an occupied building.
Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, 55, whose job is to distribute the pope’s charity funds, went to the disused state-owned building near a Rome cathedral on Saturday night and broke a police seal to re-connect electrical circuit breakers.
To some, he was a hero of sorts by Monday morning as the news went viral. Rome’s left-leaning La Repubblica newspaper ran a banner headline calling him “The Pope’s Robin Hood” and praising him for doing the right thing under the circumstances.
“What can I say? It was a particularly desperate situation. I repeat: I assume all the responsibility. If a fine arrives, I’ll pay it,” Krajewski said in an interview in Corriere della Sera newspaper on Monday.
The building has been occupied since 2013 by Italians who had lost their homes and migrants. It houses some 450 people, including about 100 children.
It had been without power since May 6 because some 300,000 euro in electricity bills had not been paid.

Mina Mangal, who worked as a television presenter before entering politics, was shot dead at close range in Kabul on Saturday.

The motive remains unclear but one line of inquiry is a family dispute.

A video emerged from the University of Bouzéreahin Algeria of a fight between students over eating practices in public during Ramadan. The video went viral the internet in the past two days.
In the video, a student who was eating in public in Ramadan day was attacked by a group who can be heard inciting others against the student for eating in public and inside the university’s campus during the holy month.
The assault on the young student which was documented in video, was followed by a brawl involving dozens of students in a dispute over the issue of eating in public during Ramadan.
The identity of the student who was eating was not revealed, some speculated even that she is non-Muslim. Meanwhile, the students who attacked her and incited others against her were confirmed not to be part of the students’ community and from outside the campus.
The video shed lights on the controversy of eating and drinking in public during Ramadan in Muslim-majority countries splitting opinion between calls to respect individual freedoms while others for respecting the Ramadan fast.
It has always been a debatable topic between conservatives who call for respecting the holy month which requires no eating in public for Muslims or non-Muslims, while liberal activists call for freedom of practice and beliefs. Democracy has a different meaning in the EU and its leaders than it has among what can laughingly be called its voters. The great irony in the EU is that it has resulted in Germany effectively winning WW2 without firing a shot. Now it is importing people who have no compunction about finishing off the second part of the German program — elimination of the Jews.
As far as I am concerned, the EU is no different than the Weimar German government which resulted in the legal accession of Hitler to power. They have allowed globalist lunatics to take charge of the EU.
My idea for the destruction of the EU is simple. If it wants to be a single unified country, it gets a single team in Soccer’s World Cup. It won’t survive the soccer hooligans.

At a graduation ceremony at Liberty University over the weekend, Vice President Mike Pence warned students that it has become “acceptable and even fashionable to ridicule and discriminate against people of faith,” and that they should “be prepared for persecution.” This was a gentle – one might say Christian – way of describing what has become an all-out war on believers. This war got into high gear in the 1960s with the banning first of prayer and then of any reference to the Christian foundations of American democracy in the public schools. Once atheism became the only constitutionally protected religion, the war on Christianity became a central source of the political divisions that followed.
Mike Pence is perhaps the most decent man in politics, but he and his wife Karen have been the target of relentless attacks by LGBTQ radicals who have conducted vigilante campaigns against Chick Fil-A, the Colorado Baker, and religious institutions across the country for the crime of being Christians. This war reached a turning point more than 40 years ago with Roe v. Wade’s invention of a constitutional right to kill unborn children – a direct assault on the belief of every Christian in the sanctity of human life.

Physicists Propose Perfect Material For Lasers
Weyl semimetals are a recently discovered class of materials, in which charge carriers behave the way electrons and positrons do in particle accelerators. Researchers from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Ioffe Institute in St. Petersburg have shown that these materials represent perfect gain media for lasers. The research findings were published in Physical Review B.
The 21st-century physics is marked by the search for phenomena from the world of fundamental particles in tabletop materials. In some crystals, electrons move as high-energy particles in accelerators. In others, particles even have properties somewhat similar to black hole matter.
MIPT physicists have turned this search inside-out, proving that reactions forbidden for elementary particles can also be forbidden in the crystalline materials known as Weyl semimetals. Specifically, this applies to the forbidden reaction of mutual particle-antiparticle annihilation without light emission. This property suggests that a Weyl semimetal could be the perfect gain medium for lasers.
In a semiconductor laser, radiation results from the mutual annihilation of electrons and the positive charge carriers called holes. However, light emission is just one possible outcome of an electron-hole pair collision. Alternatively, the energy can build up the oscillations of atoms nearby or heat the neighboring electrons. The latter process is called Auger recombination, in honor of the French physicist Pierre Auger (pronounced oh-ZHAY’).
Auger recombination limits the efficiency of modern lasers in the visible and infrared range, and severely undermines terahertz lasers. It eats up electron-hole pairs that might have otherwise produced radiation. Moreover, this process heats up the device.
For almost a century, researchers have sought a “wonder material” in which radiative recombination dominates over Auger recombination. This search was guided by an idea formulated in 1928 by Paul Dirac. He developed a theory that the electron, which had already been discovered, had a positively charged twin particle, the positron. Four years later, the prediction was proved experimentally. In Dirac’s calculations, a mutual annihilation of an electron and positron always produces light and can not impart energy on other electrons. This is why the quest for a wonder material to be used in lasers was largely seen as a search for analogues of the Dirac electron and positron in semiconductors.
“In the 1970s, the hopes were largely associated with lead salts, and in the 2000s – with graphene,” says Dmitry Svintsov, the head of the Laboratory of 2D Materials for Optoelectronics at MIPT. “But the particles in these materials exhibited deviations from Dirac’s concept. The graphene case proved quite pathological, because confining electrons and holes to two dimensions actually gives rise to Auger recombination. In the 2D world, there is little space for particles to avoid collisions.”
“Our latest paper shows that Weyl semimetals are the closest we’ve gotten to realizing an analogy with Dirac’s electrons and positrons,” added Svintsov, who was the principal investigator in the reported study.
Electrons and holes in a semiconductor do have the same electric charges as Dirac’s particles. But it takes more than that to eliminate Auger recombination. Laser engineers seek the kind of particles that would match Dirac’s theory in terms of their dispersion relations. The latter tie particle’s kinetic energy to its momentum. That equation encodes all the information on particle’s motion and the reactions it can undergo.
In classical mechanics, objects such as rocks, planets, or spaceships follow a quadratic dispersion equation. That is, doubling of the momentum results in four-fold increase in kinetic energy. In conventional semiconductors — silicon, germanium, or gallium arsenide — the dispersion relation is also quadratic. For photons, the quanta of light, the dispersion relation is linear. One of the consequences is that a photon always moves at precisely the speed of light.
The electrons and positrons in Dirac’s theory occupy a middle ground between rocks and photons: at low energies, their dispersion relation is quadratic, but at higher energies it becomes linear. Until recently, though, it took a particle accelerator to “catapult” an electron into the linear section of the dispersion relation.
Some newly discovered materials can serve as “pocket accelerators” for charged particles. Among them are the “pencil-tip accelerator” – graphene and its three-dimensional analogues, known as Weyl semimetals: tantalum arsenide, niobium phosphate, molybdenum telluride. In these materials, electrons obey a linear dispersion relation starting from the lowest energies. That is, the charge carriers behave like electrically charged photons. These particles may be viewed as analogous to the Dirac electron and positron, except that their mass approaches zero.
The researchers have shown that despite the zero mass, Auger recombination still remains forbidden in Weyl semimetals. Foreseeing the objection that a dispersion relation in an actual crystal is never strictly linear, the team went on to calculate the probability of “residual” Auger recombination due to deviations from the linear law. This probability, which depends on electron concentration, can reach values some 10,000 times lower than in the currently used semiconductors. In other words, the calculations suggest that Dirac’s concept is rather faithfully reproduced in Weyl semimetals.
“We were aware of the bitter experience of our predecessors who hoped to reproduce Dirac’s dispersion relation in real crystals to the letter,” Svintsov explained. “That is why we did our best to identify every possible loophole for potential Auger recombination in Weyl semimetals. For example, in an actual Weyl semimetal, there exist several sorts of electrons, slow and fast ones. While a slower electron and a slower hole may collapse, the faster ones can pick up energy. That said, we calculated that the odds of that happening are low.”
The team gauged the lifetime of an electron-hole pair in a Weyl semimetal to be about 10 nanoseconds. That timespan looks extremely small by everyday standards, but for laser physics, it is huge. In conventional materials used in laser technology of the far infrared range, the lifetimes of electrons and holes are thousands of times shorter. Extending the lifetime of nonequilibrium electrons and holes in novel materials opens up prospects for using them in new types of long-wavelength lasers.

NR: This previously unregulated specificity in electron-positron annihilation is essential to avoiding the production of waste heat. Increases in thermal energy tend to disrupt alignment of atomic lattice structures (i.e. solids) by inducing kinetic movement in atoms that would be better suited to performing their originally intended function (e.g., conducting electricity in copper wire).
As structures heat up, they become less able to produce their originally proposed effects. This can be useful in electrical heaters (where the nichrome wire increases in resistance as its temperature rises), but is totally counterproductive in a majority of industrial and precision control applications.
Eliminating any need for that energy dissipation at the outset precludes requirements for whatever cumbersome and inefficient heat exchanger technologies typically used to remove waste thermal byproducts. This renders more compact designs that can operate in continuous modes, much like an air-cooled machine gun. The benefits that this one small innovation can confer add up into gigawatts of saved energy and trillions of dollars-worth in conserved materials and consumed space.
If one merely considers the cost savings of launching laser-armed satellites with significantly reduced payload weights—currently running around $10,000 US Dollars (USD) to $25,000 per kilogram ($4,500 to $11,000 per pound)—shaving off just a few ounces, while making everything smaller and more power efficient, represents a major strategic advantage.

This is but one more step towards small form factor devices that will enable Dr. McCoy’s “tricorder” (as originated by Gene Roddenberry). Please recall that there are existing cancer treatments that center on triggering vascularly delivered oncological antagonists through exposure to subcutaneous infra-red laser light.
As in, light shining through your skin activates chemotherapy on a strictly localized basis which relies upon the vascular endothelial growth factor exuded by tumors to accrete encapsulated medication that is concomitantly released through envelope breakdown by laser radiation.

In fact, many of the most crucial advances involving fabrication of integrated circuits have arisen from progress made in the purity and stoichiometric (structural) aspect of substrates (i.e., wafers) and the associated gases or chemicals used in this modern marvel of subtractive and additive processes.
Likewise, this new development of Weyl semimetals may drive power efficiencies in one of the most versatile technologies ever invented since the steam engine. Whether credit is given to Hero of Alexandria, Newcomen or Watt—considering how the external combustion changed the entire course of world history (e.g., the Industrial Revolution)—a fundamental upgrade in lasing mediums promises everything from Star Trek to Star Wars and beyond.
Incidentally, they’ve already discovered effects that may produce a lightsaber.

Apple v. Pepper had an interesting outcome with Justice Kavanaugh writing a decision joined by the lefty justices, but not the conservative ones, to allow customers to sue Apple on antitrust grounds over its app store.
Despite that, it’s a common sense decision.
Apple has total control over where its customers can buy apps from. The pretense that it’s the developers, not it, in the driver’s seat, is nonsense.
From the conservative perspective though, this case is largely interesting because it may be the biggest challenge to the dot com monopolies in some time.
Apple’s walled garden of apps is a fairly typical example of a dot com business model that depends on creating a narrow marketplace, eliminating competition, and then controlling who gets to play inside, while disavowing all responsibility for it.
Justice Kavanaugh was not on board.

India: Protesters in Kargil express rage over rape of minor
Protesters took to the streets of Kargil on Monday to demand the death penalty for a 21-year-old man alleged to have raped a three-year-old child in the North Kashmir’s Bandipora district in the previous week.
Holding placards reading “Hang the rapist”, “Punish the Guilty” and “Death to the Rapist”, protesters marched and chanted calling for justice for the victim.
“These acts humiliated the whole of humanity and on behalf of Mutahhary Educational Society Kargil, I demand very harsh punishment to the culprit. And the rapist should be hanged to death,” said student Sakina Bano.
According to reports, protests also took place in other areas of the district, turning violent in some locations and leaving a number of security personnel and civilians injured.

The New York-based international non-governmental organization, Human Rights Watch, warned on April 26 that “Pakistan’s government should be alarmed by recent reports of trafficking of women and girls to China. These allegations are disturbingly similar to the pattern of trafficking of ‘brides’ to China from at least five other Asian countries.”
One week later, Pakistani authorities arrested 12 suspects — eight Chinese nationals and four Pakistanis — in a case involving the sex trafficking of young Pakistani women to China. Many had been sent as so-called “brides.” Most of them, some as young as 13, belong to Pakistan’s Christian minority.
After the arrests, Jameel Ahmed Khan, a senior official at Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), told Gatestone Institute that a preliminary investigation revealed that the sex traffickers lured young Christian girls from poverty-stricken families to China by promising them a “better life” there — and providing their parents with a monthly stipend. Khan said that although it appears that hundreds of girls have been sold this way into prostitution, the exact number is under investigation.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., sent a letter to Attorney General William Barr Monday calling for him to investigate former Secretary of State John Kerry for potential violations of the Logan Act or the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
President Trump had previously called on Kerry to be investigated after it was revealed that Kerry had been in secret talks with the Iranian government in a bid to salvage the Iran nuclear deal after Trump backed out of it.
“As you know, former Secretary Kerry’s actions since leaving office have come under scrutiny as they related to the Iran nuclear deal, known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” Rubio said in the letter to Barr.
“The American people deserve to know that U.S. laws are enforced regardless of any individual’s past position,” he added. “The Department of Justice should therefore make a determination on whether or not former Secretary of State John F. Kerry’s recent actions related to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran potentially violate the Logan Act or the Foreign Agents Registration Act.”

In a particularly disingenuous article, The Washington Post ran an op-ed authored by human rights lawyer and Muslim personality Arsalan Iftikhar titled “Calling the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization will scapegoat all Muslims.” The article postulates that “Nearly 7 million American Muslims would become the primary domestic target of such a designation.”
Putting aside the fact that the Muslim population in the U.S. is about 3.5 million, this suggests that all American Muslims are somehow affiliated with or sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood. Somehow, according to the logic of the article, any criticism or stain on the Brotherhood is condemning the entire American Muslim ummah and is therefore “Islamophobic.”
“Many people believe that this Muslim Brotherhood designation is simply a political smokescreen to criminalize Muslim civic life,” writes Ifikhar.
Missing in this and the other articles that whitewash the Brotherhood is the influence and reach of the Brotherhood’s lobby in Washington and Britain.

Mehdi Hasan seems to be everywhere on TV these days. Reliably Trump-obsessed cable channels like CNN and MSNBC relish the opportunity to promote a foreign-born Muslim guest who, they believe, has the credibility to call the president and his supporters racists and white supremacists.
And Mr. Hasan, for his part, is relishing both the spotlight and the opportunity to make his case directly to an anti-Trump audience in the United States.
After spending the last several years claiming to be concerned about hostile countries interfering in American politics, though, it’s a bit jarring to see the employee of a state-run media outlet hostile to the United States appear so frequently on CNN and MSNBC.
By promoting Mr. Hasan, these cable news outlets are facilitating the insertion of foreign propaganda into the American political debate.
Mr. Hasan works for al Jazeera, the Qatari-owned media enterprise that advances the interests of the state and its royal family. When he speaks, he’s no less a government spokesman than Kellyanne Conway or Sarah Sanders.…
What these networks are doing is unwittingly participating in an information operation. Because CNN or MSNBC’s viewers agree with Mr. Hasan’s anti-Trump message, they’ll trust him on other issues as well.…

Qatar’s spending spree in Washington has brought dozens of law, PR, lobbying, and political strategy firms onto Qatar’s side. Qatar donates massive sums to prestigious think tanks like the Brookings Institute and the International Crisis Group.
The goal? Making western elites either dependent on Qatari largesse or hopeful of becoming a recipient of it, softening American opposition to Qatar’s support for terrorism and Islamism, and pressuring lawmakers and the media to take up rhetorical arms against Qatar’s regional rivals, US allies Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.…

However, thousands of environmental activists and at least five Democratic presidential candidates have repeated the talking point.
Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal is also built on the incorrect claim there’s only 12 years left to avert catastrophic global warming.

However, at least five Democrats running for president in 2020 invoked the “12 years left” talking point as a sign of how seriously they took climate change to build support among the environmental left. On Sunday, however, Ocasio-Cortez seemingly flipped her position on the 12-year deadline. Her “world ending” warning was only “dry humor,” and that “you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal,” she tweeted.

Italy: Forza Nuova supporters protest pro-refugee mayor outside Rome Uni
Supporters of the far-right Forza Nuova (FN) party marched up to the Sapienza University in Rome, to protest against former pro-refugee mayor of Riace, Domenico ‘Mimmo’ Lucano, who was supposed to give a lecture in front of students.
The protesters shouted anti-refugee slogans, and held numerous party flags and banners denouncing Lucano as the ‘enemy of Italy’.
Addressing the attendees, Forza Nuova President Roberto Fiore said, “He is speaking today to university students in Rome. He is giving a masterclass on how he managed to marry 80-year-old Calabrian citizens with African women, on how he has destroyed his city, despite having received hundreds of thousands of funds.”
“It is a shame that immigration is constantly justified from the most important powers of the Vatican. The only objective is the profit,” he added.
A counter-protest was organised by the students of the university, drawing hundreds of people to voice out their support for Lucano. Heavy police presence ensured that the opposing rallies were kept far from one another. Lucano was arrested in October 2018 for allegedly helping illegal immigrants to stay in Italy by arranging marriages of convenience with Italians, but these charges were later dropped. In April 2019 he was charged, along with 26 other people, in connection with allegations that they helped people whose asylum applications had been rejected remain in Italy.

“Libyan Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and the Libyan National Army’s offensive against Tripoli represents a threat to international peace, the European Union warned on Monday, May 13.
“The LNA military attack on Tripoli and the subsequent escalation in and around the capital constitutes a threat to international peace and security and further threatens the stability of Libya,” the E.U. Foreign Affairs Council said in a statement after a meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers.
“Furthermore, it enhances the risk of increased terrorist threat across the country.”
E.U. foreign ministers had earlier held talks on the crisis, which deepened dramatically last month when Haftar, whose LNA holds the east of the country, launched a bid to seize Tripoli, seat of the U.N.-recognized Government of National Accord.
The statement, issued after E.U. ministers met the Libyan prime minister, Fayez al-Sarraj, also voiced concern about the “impact on migration flows” the fighting was having.
Libya, which has been wracked by chaos since the 2011 uprising that killed longtime leader Muammar Qaddafi, has long been a major transit route for migrants desperate to reach Europe.
Around 60 people died on the weekend when their boat capsized in the Mediterranean after leaving Libya for Italy.”

“Four police officers were killed and nine people wounded when militants detonated a bomb hidden under a motorbike in the southwestern Pakistan city of Quetta, police said on Monday, May 13.
Tehrik-i Taliban Pakistan, the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Two of the wounded were also police, senior police official Abdul Razaq Cheema told AFP.
“Two of the injured are critical,” he added.
The motorbike was parked outside a mosque where police personnel were posted in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province.
The attack came days after Baloch Liberation Army separatists attacked a luxury hotel in Balochistan’s second city, Gwadar. Five people including a soldier died in the hotel attack.

“Around 10 armed assailants tried to attack the prison at around 1600 GMT but were repelled because the security forces were already aware of an impending raid,” a security source told AFP.
“There are no deaths in our ranks for the moment,” Bazoum tweeted.
The security source said the assailants infiltrated the Koutoukale market to launch their attempt on the prison.
The Koutoukalé prison, around 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Niamey, was previously attacked in October 2016 by assailants aboard motorbikes wielding explosives.
Considered to be Niger’s most secure prison, the facility holds the country’s most dangerous detainees, including jihadists from groups active in the Sahel and militants from Nigeria’s Boko Haram. It also holds prisoners from neighboring Mali.
Niger faces insurgency on two fronts: the southeastern Diffa region near Lake Chad is increasingly frequently hit by Nigeria-based militants, primarily the Islamic State West Africa Province faction of Boko Haram.
