Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

  1. Channel 4 – Life after ISIS in the devastated city of Mosul

The ISIS caliphate may have been blasted from the map across Iraq and Syria – but its legacy remains.

A global coalition ousted the Islamist militia from Mosul in northern Iraq but at great cost.

When our Chief Correspondent Alex Thomson visited the old city he found an empty, devastated place where some even yearn for the return of ISIS.

One Illinois Lawmaker’s Very Real Plan To Push Jussie Smollett Out of Chicago

    Michael McAuliffe is furious.

McAuliffe is an Illinois state assemblyman from Chicago, and while plenty of other people are condemning “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett for making false claims that he was assaulted by two white men who hurled racist and homophobic taunts as they beat him, McAuliffe is taking concrete action.

The assemblyman will soon introduce a bill in the state legislature that would punish film companies for doing business with Smollett in Illinois.

“A lot of valuable Chicago Police Department man hours and resources were wasted chasing down a bogus crime arranged by Smollett,” McAuliffe said in a statement. “A lot of valuable Chicago Police Department (CPD) man hours and resources were wasted chasing down a bogus crime arranged by Smollett,” the Republican said“Hate crimes are serious and so is the time and effort of the CPD. He has cost Chicago a lot more than a $10,000 bond. Smollett should not be able to get anything more from the City of Chicago or Illinois.”

Under the legislation, movies companies would lose tax credits if they employ Smollett.,%202019%20at%2003:06:06%20PM

    • Michael McAuliffe is furious.

And so is a lot of Chicago’s thin blue line. They’d damn-well better stay furious until November next or they will only get more like this rank betrayal (pun intended) from the Party that Hates Rule of Law.

The Afro-circle-jerk that saw every one of the sixteen felony charges against Smollett dropped was offensive to all races. Most especially for Black CPD officers who—aside from the already lasting indignity of Affirmative Action—daily put their lives on the line, only to see their professionalism debased by the deliberate actions of some real racists.

No number of Zimmermanesque or Fergusonian media frauds—like Ashtrayvon’s Sizzurp Sendup or BLM’s Brownian motion-to-convict in their Show-Me State of Misery—could ever harm American race relations worse than this sort of cynical Black bigotry.

As usual, it isn’t just the actual crime’s dimensions themselves that are truly offensive. It is the sheer brazenness, coupled with weapons-grade stupidity, which makes everything so condescendingly insulting.

Smollett’s felonious acts were a “hate crime” against all American Caucasians, en mass. It requires no reach of imagination to impugn this liar’s motives with the explicit intent of inciting race wars.

These felonies were committed by Smollett with malice aforethought, full premeditation (there is a difference), and this legally fraudulent front operation included laying in wait to commit the major part of his crimes.

If the same team went on to repeat another fraud identical to this one, it would constitute a pattern of activities that meets RICO qualifications. The only difference being that this primarily is a racial syndicate but hardcore criminal nonetheless.

Just the diversion of manpower alone is sufficiently illegal in and of itself. Yet, there is a conspicuously low likelihood that those atop this food chain of racial botulism will actually answer for their crimes.

This sense of immunity—uncontaminated by any stain of conscience or morality—epitomized both 0bama administrations and these Back-of-the-Yards legal travesties have their familiar cloven hoofprints all over them.

From whatever little bottom-feeding Hollywood homo to the apex of this racial @$$holery, every last one of these Caucasian-hating bigots are willing and knowing accessories to this mass “hate crime.” against Whites.

Blacks around the world should be outraged at this flagrant defiance of truth and fairness. Especially so when it rightfully besmirches a fetish “racial figurehead” [vomit] like 0bama.

Instead, NOWHERE has there been a peep from the ANC, or whatever other Cannibal Congregation that might presume to an African voice of reason.

Small wonder that American Whites should be outraged by such flaunting of the legal system. Now, try to imagine the incandescent fury of honest Black Chicago police officers (or Chitown cops of any race for that matter).

Even if a prison-raped Smollett wound up lashed down to a blazing mattress, I still wouldn’t piss on the flames.

  6. Russian MoD: French, Belgian Intel Officers Plan Chemical ‘Provocation’ in Idlib (sputniknews, Mar 29, 2019)

“Illegal armed groups in Syria’s northwestern Idlib de-escalation zone are planning to use toxins against civilians to blame Russia and Syrian troops, Viktor Kupshichin, the head of the Russian Defense Ministry’s center for Syrian reconciliation said.

“According to data obtained by the Center for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides, illegal armed groups operating in the Idlib de-escalation zone are preparing a provocation to accuse Russia’s Aerospace Forces and the Syrian government troops of using poisonous substances against civilians”, Kupshichin told reporters.

Moreover, Belgian spies made videos of Russian air strikes on terrorist arms depots which they plan to use as proof of Russia’s chemical attacks in northwestern Syria, Viktor Kupchishin, the head of the Russian Defense Ministry’s center for Syrian reconciliation, said Friday.

“To organize provocations, representatives of the French and Belgian secret services arrived in Idlib. Under their supervision, a meeting was held with the field commanders of the terrorist groups of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and Hurras Al-Din, as well as with the representatives of the pseudo-humanitarian organization ‘White helmets’”, Maj. Gen. Viktor Kupchishin said at a news briefing…”

  7. I thought I posted this video about an hour ago but can’t find it.

At about 42 minutes he is talking about the Obama administgration’s interfering in the Ukrainian election, and asks if the Russian interfering in the US election is payback for Obama messing around in the Ukrainian election?

    • Innit curiouser and curiouser that an über-commie KGB thug like Putin apparently hates Hillary in ways that not even Donald Trump can imagine? And here we were, all of us thinking that a mega-Capitalist like Trump would draw Vladimir’s crypto-Communist wrath faster than a pint in Dublin’s beer-drinking finals.

One can only speculate as to the schizoid love–hate relationship Russia’s Mafiya oligarchs must have with Trump. “All that money, and he gets to be President, too?! In fair elections!?!” It must be deeply traumatic for these bewildered, pinstriped leeches to even think about this.

We all know how these ambulatory vodka suction squads must be thinking there’s some sort of trick to this, or an inside track that they just aren’t privy to.

Well, there is a catch to all this. We patriotic Americans call it the Constitution and it’s a document that corrupt demons like them would shred faster than an industrial wood-chipper. Any link between it’s absence and Neo-Soviet Russia’s status as the world’s largest contiguous $h!thølé is purely coincidental.

Were it not for the urgency of Trump getting this entire world back on track, he would deserve to spend a lot more time tormenting the living shit mining the comedy gold out of his all-too-abundant foes.

  8. Tina Tchen to the Rescue
High-powered Obama fixer pulls strings for hoaxster Jussie Smollett.
    March 29, 2019
    Lloyd Billingsley

As the Chicago Sun-Times reported, “Michelle Obama’s former chief of staff said Wednesday that her behind-the-scenes communications with Cook County’s top prosecutor about the case involving actor Jussie Smollett were not intended at influencing the outcome of the case.”

The former chief of staff is Tina Tchen, who said in a statement: “I know members of the Smollett family based on prior work together. Shortly after Mr. Smollett reported he was attacked, as a family friend, I contacted Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, who I also know from prior work together. My sole activity was to put the chief prosecutor in the case in touch with an alleged victim’s family who had concerns about how the investigation was being characterized in public.”

It wasn’t clear if Tina Tchen, 63, was actually representing anyone in the Smollett family. On the other hand, with her BA from Harvard and JD from Northwestern, Tchen is well qualified to represent top-drawer clients.

“A high-powered lawyer, Tina’s career accomplishments have established her as a powerful advocate for gender equality,” explains the Harry Walker Agency, the “world’s leading speakers’ bureau” representing Jeff Flake and Stacey Abrams, “a dynamic in-demand duo,” along with Ben Rhodes, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and former UN boss Ban Ki-Moon, among many others.

  10. “Black Press Only” in Savannah Mayor’s Race
    March 29, 2019
    Daniel Greenfield

Segregation is back. But now this is supposed to be the “good kind” of progressive segregation.

With signs stating “Black press only” on the doors of the church where the meeting was held, white reporters were barred from entry, while black reporters for at least two television stations were permitted inside.

The event was coordinated by the Rev. Clarence Teddy Williams, owner of the consulting firm, The Trigon Group, who declined to discuss the entry policy.

Former Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson declined to comment before going inside, as did Chatham County Commissioner Chester Ellis.

Savannah Alderman Estella Shabazz, who also attended, said that she had once owned a newspaper and she was a member of the black press, but she declined to comment – when repeatedly pressed – on the policy barring white reporters from going inside.

  11. Eric Holder: America Never Great
A God complex on full display.
    March 29, 2019
    Matthew Vadum

America has never been “great” and those who embrace the Trump campaign slogan “Make America Great Again,” or MAGA, are racists, sexists, and homophobes, disgraced former Attorney General Eric Holder told his ideological comrades at MSNBC in an interview this week.

Since leaving office Holder has been spending his time plotting to turn the U.S. into a one-party state. He recently said the next Democrat president should pack the Supreme Court with leftists to combat what he called Republicans’ “power-grabbing antics.” Holder is now chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, a political action committee that claims “the political system is rigged,” and “the fight to fix it is now.”

But what is particularly disturbing is that Holder, cited with contempt by Congress and nearly impeached and who spent his time in office stirring up racial animosity for political advantage –he infamously called America “a nation of cowards” on issues involving race— is not an outlier on the Left with his ugly, anti-American views. His sentiments are largely embraced by the Democratic Party’s base across the country, the mainstream media, Hollywood, academia, and more or less by all those now running for the Democrats’ 2020 presidential nomination.

And if his repugnant opinions and leftist radicalism weren’t bad enough, his angry, sanctimonious, stomach-turning self-righteousness quite rightly makes conservatives want to throw things at their televisions.

  12. Immigration Fraud Threatens National Security
Soldiers at Fort Bragg arrested for alleged marriage fraud conspiracy.
    March 29, 2019
    Michael Cutler

With nearly all of the focus of the immigration debate centering on the abject lack of security along the U.S./Mexico border, other failures of the overwhelmed immigration system are being utterly ignored. Make no mistake: that dangerous border must be made secure against the illegal and uninspected entry of aliens, but the other failures of the immigration system are no less serious and pose no less of a threat.

The majority of these failures center on the lack of resources for the enforcement of our immigration laws from within the interior of the United States, an issue I addressed in my recent article about the importance of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), a division of the Department of Homeland Security.

In addition to arresting illegal aliens, there are many other elements critical to the interior enforcement mission. One of the most critical is to conduct investigations to uncover immigration fraud, whereby aliens are provided with various immigration benefits such as being granted political asylum, lawful immigrant status and even U.S. citizenship to which they would not be entitled if all of the relevant material facts were known.

Such investigations are conducted by a subdivision of ICE known as HSI (Homeland Security Investigations

  13. Political School of Marion Maréchal Attacked Allegedly by Far-Left Antifa (breitbart, Mar 29, 2019)

“Far-left Antifa extremists have been blamed for the attack on the the political management school in Lyon founded by French former populist MP Marion Maréchal.

Ms Maréchal said she would be submitting a formal complaint about far-left extremist violence after the attack on her Institute for Social Sciences, Economics, and Politics (ISSEP) occurred late Tuesday night, Le Figaro reports.

A far-left extremist Antifa group named “Anti-fascist group Lyon” took credit for the attack writing on Facebook, “On the night of March 26th to 27th, we attacked ISSEP […] the school created by Marion Maréchal Le Pen which opened new year 2018 in order to form an elite of the far right.”

“Consider this attack as an answer to all racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic acts, as well as deadly anti-migration policies and the Christchurch bombing,” they added in the post which has since been removed.

Maréchal told Le Figaro, “We will use all legal channels to enforce the freedom of education in France, obviously violated by violent leftist militias and whose members are known to police.”

“They think they are free enough to claim their actions on their Facebook page. This is to say their feeling of impunity. In addition to filing a complaint, I will ask for an appointment with the prefect, the rectorate, and the mayor of Lyon to take preventative measures against such threats to the safety of my institution,” she said.

In a press release, the ISSEP said that the Antifa extremists had smashed a window with a hammer, attempted to force locks, and had covered the facade of the building with black paint.

The attack echoes that against the hipster-right Identitarian movement in Halle, Germany, that saw Antifa extremists attempt to break into their building with a drill and spray butyric acid inside. The extremists also set fires and smashed nearby cars.

Earlier this year a party office of the populist Alternative for Germany in Döbeln was firebombed, with many suspecting Antifa being behind the attack.

In Italy, far-left groups have been even more radical with an anarchist group bombing an office of Interior Minister Matteo Salvini’s League party in Treviso in August last year.”

  14. Soros Bankrolled Unverified ‘Hate Crime’ Database Used by Major Media Outlets
‘Documenting Hate’ receives data from SPLC, CAIR, and partners with more than 100 outlets

Liberal billionaire George Soros bankrolled a massive “hate crime” database that is used by more than 100 media partners—including Google News Labs, New York Times Opinion, and ABC News—to report alleged hate crimes, according to tax documents and interviews.

The database, launched following the election of President Donald Trump, is “unverified” and receives stories of alleged “hate” from the likes of the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), an organization currently in upheaval over charges of institutional racism perpetrated by its recently fired co-founder, Morris Dees, and the Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights group that was previously listed as an unindicted co-conspirator of terrorism.

Media partners involved in the initiative have access to the unverified database, and use it to report stories of hate in the Trump era.

ProPublica, an investigative reporting nonprofit based in New York City, launched the project, known as “Documenting Hate,” in 2017. The New York Times backed the project in January 2017 editorial, “Why We Need a Project to Document Hate Crimes.”

    • This one is almost too good to be true, the article may be reporting real news (Free Beacon has a good rep) or them may have fallen for a hoax.

  15. Turkey Plants Its Flag in Christchurch

BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 1,126, March 29, 2019

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: When, two days after the mass shooting in New Zealand, Turkish VP Fuat Oktay and FM Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu became the first high-level foreign government delegation to travel to Christchurch, they were doing more than expressing solidarity with New Zealand’s grieving Muslim community. They were planting Turkey’s flag as part of a global effort to expand support for President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an’s style of religiously packaged authoritarian rule – a marriage of Islam and Turkish nationalism – beyond the Turkic and former Ottoman world.

While showing footage of the March 15 shooting rampage in Christchurch, New Zealand at a rally in advance of the March 31 local elections, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdo?an declared, “there is a benefit in watching this on the screen. Remnants of the Crusaders cannot prevent Turkey’s rise.”

He went on to say, “We have been here for 1,000 years and God willing we will be until doomsday. You will not be able to make Istanbul Constantinople. Your ancestors came and saw that we were here. Some of them returned on foot and some returned in coffins. If you come with the same intent, we will be waiting for you too.”

Erdo?an was responding to an assertion by Brenton Tarrant, the white supremacist perpetrator of the Christchurch attacks in which 49 people were killed in two mosques, that Turks were “ethnic soldiers currently occupying Europe.”

  17. ‘Mother of all caravans’ forming in Honduras: More than 20,000 expected
Mexico Daily News March 28, 2019

[Ed. – The size of an (old-school doctrine) army infantry division. This doesn’t spontaneously happen because a class of people is feeling under-served at home.]

“Mother of all migrants’ caravans’ is forming up in Honduras: interior secretary
Numbers could go higher than 20,000

Richard: As J.E. points out this is as large as an Infantry Division, this will be a logistics nightmare and I want to know more about 1) is the Caravaan real, 2) what is the composition of the caravan, 3) who is paying for it?

If this is true there is no way anyone can say that this isn’t an invasion, and if it gets close to the US Border POTUS will be justified in shutting down our Southern Border for a long time.

All of the signs say that something is going to start massive violence in one nation (No the Yellow Vest protests aren’t there, not yet) and the fighting will spread to the other nations composing what use to be Western Civilization. I don’t know what is going to happen or when but the signs are pointing to a major confrontation and explosion sometime this year.

“The murderous blockade (on Yemen) is a diplomatic house of cards, with no legal ground in international law,” Ulf Sandmark said in an interview with Tasnim.

  22. Egypt: Daughter of Senior Brotherhood Leader Faces Extended Stay in Custody (aawsat, Mar 29, 2019)

“An Egyptian court ruled to extend the detention of Aisha Al-Shater, the daughter of senior Muslim Brotherhood leader Khairat Al-Shater. Stretched out to 45 days, the detention extra time was approved in order to maintain ongoing investigations uninterrupted.

Aisha, alongside her husband, faces charges of belonging to an outlawed terror organization and terror funding.

Egyptian authorities blacklisted the Brotherhood as a terrorist organization in 2013.

Investigations revealed that the cell, to which Aisha belonged, knowingly called for protests with anti-state sentiment.

The Egyptian public prosecution also pressed charges such as engaging in public disinformation aimed at disrupting social peace and undermining confidence in the Egyptian state and its institutions.

In parallel, Egypt’s appeals court adjourned its ruling on what is publicly known as the Imbaba terror cell case. Its members are seeking to appeal verdicts that include death penalties and life imprisonment, initially issued over charges of belonging to a terrorist group and possession of illegal arms.

Last March, the Giza Criminal Court sentenced 10 of the Imbaba cell defendants to death and five to life in jail.

Investigations revealed that the defendants had consciously formed an armed terrorist network in the wake of the June 30, 2013 revolution, tasked with securing riots organized by the Brotherhood in Giza and that they participated in anti-police violence such as bombing police stations and plotting the murder of local officers.”

  23. Saudi Mineral Wealth Attracts $500Bn in 10 Yrs (aawsat, Mar 29, 2019)

“Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) revealed studies showing that the volume of the Kingdom’s mineral wealth is much more than the preliminary estimates at $1.3 trillion.

It pointed to the efforts and accelerated exploration program that will be implemented in the coming years to determine the size of wealth as it nears launching a database in April.

It also expected to attract $500 billion-worth investments over the next 10 years.

Preliminary studies conducted by the SGS and existing businesses confirm that the volume of wealth is much higher than this figure, Head of the SGS Hussein al-Otaibi affirmed Thursday in press remarks on the sidelines of the fifth annual forum, which was held in Riyadh under the slogan “Our Land”.

Regarding Saudi Arabia’s reserves of phosphates, Otaibi said the Kingdom is among the world’s top 10 countries having the largest phosphate reserves.

“We expect the Kingdom to be the second or third country by 2030 to produce phosphate fertilizers,” he said.

When asked about the Uranium reserves, Otaibi said Saudi Arabia has large reserves of uranium, according to recent studies.

“Currently, we are in the assessment phase, and current results have shown promising quantities with expectations of owning five percent of the world’s uranium reserves, and I think studies will prove more than this global ratio.”

He said the SGS will soon launch the first version of the geological database, noting that in collaboration with scientific bodies, ministries and other concerned bodies, it was able to collect historical information on the country’s geology, spanning more than 80 years.

Otaibi also pointed out that this database is stored in one place and is digitized and ready to be used, adding that the initial version has been launched and the first version is expected to be launched within a month for investors and those interested in geology and mining.

“We currently own about 70 terabytes of data stored in reports, maps and satellite images,” Otaibi explained, adding that this is a very large amount of information on minerals and mining.”

  24. DAILY MAIL – Rescued Taliban hostage ‘struck his estranged wife, tied her ankles and wrists with rope and forced her to have sex’ after terrorists held them and their children captive for five years

Caitlan Coleman, of Pennsylvania, testified Friday at Joshua Boyle’s Ottawa trial
Said she was ‘very scared’ of her husband who got ‘extremely angry’ and ‘hit her’
Boyle has pleaded not guilty to a number of criminal charges against Coleman
The pair were taken hostage by Taliban fighters in 2012 and were freed in 2017
They had three children – two boys aged 2 and 4 and a baby girl – in captivity
The purported acts allegedly occurred after they returned to Canada
A judge granted Caitlan’s request for full custody of the kids in July 2018
She had her and Boyle’s fourth child in 2018 and now lives back in Pennsylvania

The estranged wife of former hostage Joshua Boyle says he struck her, tied her ankles and wrists with rope and forced her to have sex during an incident following the couple’s forced captivity in Afghanistan.

Caitlan Coleman, 33, traveled from Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, where she lives with her family to testify Friday at her husband’s assault trial in Ottawa, Canada.

Boyle, 35, has pleaded not guilty to a number of criminal charges for alleged offenses against Coleman, including assault, sexual assault and unlawful confinement.

Coleman told court Friday: ‘Some of the details are a little bit fuzzy, but he was angry over the fact that I told him that I didn’t want to have anal sex, which was something that he expressed to me that he wanted and that he felt he had a right to have with me.

‘I was feeling I can’t do this anymore.I suggested to Josh I was going to take the children and leave. I just can’t do this anymore.

‘He got extremely angry. He hit me. My face. He was very, very, very angry at me, that I can’t try to leave him.

‘He took ropes he kept in a bag and he started to tie my hands and legs. I wasn’t resisting him. I was very scared of him so I was just doing what he was telling me to do.’

She claims he then bound her wrists behind her back and tied her ankles together and refused to untie them.

In testimony via closed-circuit television to keep away from Boyle, Coleman added: I think I might have asked him, ‘Why?’ He explained that he couldn’t trust me; that I would leave if he untied me. I started crying and I think I was pleading with him to untie me.

‘I was never to disagree with him, even on small things,’ she said. ‘In the past, he made it clear he didn’t feel any guilt hurting me.’

Boyle and his wife were taken hostage in 2012 by a Taliban-linked group while on a backpacking trip in Afghanistan.

The couple had three children during their five years in captivity. She had their first son in 2013, their second in 2015 and their daughter in 2017.

At some stage during the captivity, she also miscarried another baby girl.

The family was rescued in 2017 by Pakistani forces. Boyle was arrested in December that year. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

He is expected to claim in court that his estranged spouse consented to the ‘physical, sexual, and emotional’ abuse after the trauma of her kidnapping.

A partial gag order was lifted as the trial started, revealing that all but one of the 19 charges relate to his American wife.

The other victim in the case has not been named in accordance with a legally mandated publication ban.

Boyle and his wife were taken hostage in 2012 by a Taliban-linked group while on a backpacking trip in Afghanistan.

Coleman described in documents how Boyle who she says tricked her into going to Afghanistan in 2012 where they were kidnapped by the Taliban, piled onto her suffering during the five years they were held against their will.

Coleman added that her husband, who was arrested for sexual assault within days of returning to Canada, had been obsessed with extremist Islam for years.

‘I would like to stress, most strongly, that for more than a decade, the respondent (Boyle) has had an interest in extremist ideologies and in the complete subservience of women.

‘I have never shared that interest,’ she said.

Coleman claimed he tricked her into going to Afghanistan in 2012 by first taking her to Central Asia, when she was five months pregnant, and then telling her they would enter the Taliban stronghold for him to pursue a story as an aspiring journalist.

In late January, Boyle was determined fit to stand trial – though he was transferred from prison to a secure mental health facility for further assessment and psychiatric treatment.

The pair married in 2011 during a different trip in Central Asia. Before setting off when she was pregnant, they split up briefly.

Boyle, who denies abusing her and says she was neglectful of their children and him in captivity, explained in his own court submissions how they met online.

They both, he said, had an interest in BDSM and travel.

‘We both enjoyed BDSM. We both wanted to travel by way of backpacking, and we both wanted to see the world,’ he said.

He contended that Coleman knew about his plans to travel to Afghanistan and that she did nothing to look after the children in captivity.

Boyle even claimed their captors referred to him as the children’s mother and father because Coleman apparently did so little.

Before marrying Coleman, Boyle was married to the sister of Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr and the daughter of a senior al-Qaida financier who had contacts with Osama bin Laden.

Caitlan Coleman’s devastating portrait of a completely dysfunctional marriage

    • NATIONAL POST – Joshua Boyle trial: Caitlan Coleman testifies about forced sex, bondage

‘He was very, very, very angry at me, that I can’t try to leave him,’ Coleman testified

Former Afghanistan hostage Caitlan Coleman says her husband, Joshua Boyle, made her live under a strict set of written rules in Ottawa that set out her duties as a mother and wife and punished her when she failed.

Coleman, 33, presented court with a copy of the handwritten rules issued by Boyle in December 2017, two months after they had returned to Canada from Afghanistan.

“He said following this list wouldn’t make me a good person, but it was the bare minimum he would expect of me, and I would be punished if I did not follow the list,” Coleman testified during her second day on the witness stand.

Among other things, the list required Coleman to ensure their three children ate breakfast, prayed and made their beds by 8 a.m.

She had to take cold showers, Coleman said, since Boyle believed they promoted stamina, self-control and hair growth.

She had to sleep nude, “plan interesting sex” twice a week, address others in the house as “sir and madame” and ensure that Boyle spent himself — ejaculated — 14 times a week.

“You must ask for chastising every time you think you have failed,” reads the handwritten note, which also has columns that set targets for Coleman’s weekly weight loss and Boyle’s ejaculations.

Coleman told court that Boyle spanked her as a form of “chastisement,” sometimes violently.

Once, she said, after failing to meet the required number of ejaculations, Boyle made her select something with which to be spanked. Coleman said she chose a broom — “I didn’t think it would be too bad,” she explained — and Boyle struck her hard seven or eight times across the buttocks with the broom handle as she stood with her hands against their bedroom wall.

“After that, he gave me a hug and told me to do better next time,” she said.

The incident was one in a series of violent encounters — slaps to the face, biting, spanking, a Christmas Day choking incident — that Coleman described in court Friday.

Coleman said she didn’t tell anyone about the violence, even though she became increasingly convinced that Boyle would kill her.

“I could see that being the eventual end,” she told court.

In what she said was the most difficult incident to recount, Coleman said her husband hit her in the face and knocked her to the floor after an argument about anal sex that ended with her threatening to take the children and leave.

Coleman testified that on the night of Nov. 27, 2017, Boyle became angry when she told him she didn’t want to have anal sex, something she found uncomfortable.

“It was something he expressed to me he wanted and that he had a right to have with me,” she told court.

Boyle has pleaded not guilty to 19 charges, including assault, sexual assault, confinement and criminal harassment.

Coleman is the primary complainant in the case.

Coleman testified she became upset and frightened when Boyle continued to insist on anal sex: “I was feeling I can’t do this anymore. I suggested to Josh I was going to take the children and leave. I just can’t do this anymore.”

She might have raised her voice, Coleman said, and was definitely crying.

“He got extremely angry,” she said. “He hit me. My face.”

She walked toward the cloak closet to leave the apartment, Coleman said, when Boyle grabbed her and knocked her to the floor. He told her that she couldn’t leave, she said.

Coleman said she sat on the floor for some time before Boyle came back and told her to go to the bedroom and take off her clothes.

“I wasn’t resisting him,” Coleman said. “I was very scared of him, so I was just doing what he was telling me to do.”

Boyle kept ropes and other BDSM paraphernalia in a bag beside the bed. He bound Coleman’s wrists behind her back and tied her ankles together — she wasn’t sure if she was blindfolded — but, after intercourse, he refused to remove the restraints.

“I think I might have asked him, ‘Why?’ He explained that he couldn’t trust me, that I would leave if he untied me. I started crying and I think I was pleading with him to untie me.”

Boyle, she said, agreed to untie her if she remained quiet for 30 minutes. After that time passed, Coleman again asked to be untied, but Boyle refused.

“I said, ‘You promised.’ His only response to me was, ‘I lied.’”

She waited for him to go to sleep before she extricated herself and went to bed.

“Looking back, I should have tried to leave,” she told court, “but I just didn’t. I just lay down.”

A month later, she testified, in mid-December, Boyle again struck her when she struggled against his attempts to penetrate her anally.

“I believe I was saying, ‘No, no.’ I was trying to convey, ‘No, you know I can’t do this…’

“He wasn’t able to enter me, so, after a period of trying, he stopped and hit me on the face and said, ‘F— you.’”

Coleman said she believed she was struck with his fist.

“It hurt, but it wasn’t the hardest he ever hit me. It wasn’t one of the worst hits,” she told court.

Coleman testified by closed circuit television from another room because she did not want to be in the same courtroom as Boyle.

Earlier this week, Coleman told court that the final two years of her captivity in Afghanistan were marked by physical and emotional abuse from Boyle, who spanked her as punishment and slapped, punched, bit and choked her during bouts of anger.

Coleman, 33, said the abuse continued after the family was rescued by Pakistani forces in October 2017 and returned to Canada.

Coleman will testify about the night of Boyle’s arrest early Monday, after which it’s expected she will face cross-examination by defence lawyer Lawrence Greenspon.

  25. Amnesty International: Syrian regime and Russia continue targeting civilians (memo, Mar 29, 2019)

“Amnesty International said that the forces of Bashar Al-Assad regime continue the deliberate targeting of health centres, furnaces and neighbourhoods in Idlib, northern Syria, with the support of Russia, indicating that this falls within the framework of “war crimes.”

In a report issued on Thursday and entitled: “the Syrian government forces launched illegal attacks on civilians and health centres,” the organisation said:

“the regime forces increased during March the frequency of aerial targeting of residential neighbourhoods in the vicinity of the Aleppo-Damascus International Highway, pointing out that these attacks forced thousands of civilians to flee to areas close to the Turkish border.

The report quoted the director of the Middle East office of the organisation, Lynn Maalouf, saying that:

“the Syrian government continues to ignore the laws of war and the safety of civilians’ lives, despite the passage of eight years of war in the country,” noting that the military victory (of the regime) came after the killing of tens of thousands of civilians and destruction of populated cities.”

Maalouf pointed out that the ongoing attacks on Idlib are similar to those in Aleppo (north), Daraa (south) and Damascus countryside.

She added that “the Syrian government forces’ targeting of hospitals, health centres, furnaces and schools is forcing people to leave. The Syrian government, supported by Russia, uses the same illegal military tactics which lead to forced displacement and mass displacement.”…”

  26. Lebanon court convicts Saudi prince who tried to smuggle drugs (memo, Mar 29, 2019)

“The Mount Lebanon Criminal Court issued a guilty verdict in the case of the Prince Abdul Muhsin bin Walid bin Abdul Muhsin bin Abdul Aziz for smuggling about two tonnes of Captagon drugs on his private jet while heading from Beirut to Saudi Arabia on 26 October 2015.

The Lebanese Court, headed by Judge Abdul Rahim Hamoud, and both Judge-counsellors, Rania Bishara and Sara Berresh, convicted the Saudi prince of drug possession and trafficking. The prince and Yahya Shaimi Al-Shammari were sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment with hard labour. However, it was then reduced to six years, and a 10 million Lebanese pounds fine, which is equal to about 15,000 dollars.

According to Sputnik, the Criminal Court upheld a one-year prison term for each of the Saudi suspects Bandar Al-Sharaoui, Zied Al-Hakim and Mubarak Al-Harthy. They were also required to pay a 2 million Lebanese pounds fine, which is equal to $3,000.

The Court also sentenced the Lebanese fugitives Hassan Jafar, Ali Ismail and Marwan Kilani to penal servitude and fined each one of them 100 million Lebanese pounds, which is equal to 150,000 dollars, in addition to confiscating all of their lands and possessions.”

  27. Vox leader wants to build a wall to stop immigrants coming to Spain – and he wants Morocco to pay for it (thelocal, Mar 29, 2019)

“The leader of the Spanish far-right party Vox is following in the footsteps of Donald Trump with demands for a wall at the border to stop the flow of immigrants.

Santiago Abascal believes that not only should “insurmountable walls” be built at the borders of Spain’s north African enclaves to halt “the wave of illegal immigrants”, but that Morocco should foot the bill.

In a new book published this week, called “Santiago Abascal: España vertebrada” Abascal reveals more about the immigration policies of the Spain’s newest political party.

He argues that as Morocco “ sends waves of immigrants across the border” it should be one to pay for the cost of walls at the borders in Ceuta and Melilla, Spain’s two enclaves on the North African coast.

He also argues that the army should be sent in to patrol the borders until the walls are erected and should be given “the necessary orders” to defend them.

Abascal, a 42-year-old from the Basque Country, also wants to introduce new measures to prevent NGOs from helping stricken migrants and rescuing them at sea.

He wants to stop “those NGOs that collaborate with mafias and go to the African coast to collect human trade”.

The leader of Vox, which won its first seats in the Andalusian parliament in regional elections last December and is set for a sizeable share of the vote in the general election on April 28, also wants to construct a “psychological wall” against migration.

He believes that “the great wall that we should be building is a psychological one and consists of informing immigrants that those who enter illegally in Europe will never be able to regularize their situation nor will they have the right to stay, nor will they have social assistance, nor will they be given a health card,” he insists.

Polls suggest Vox, which campaigns against illegal immigration and “radical” feminism, will become the first far-right party to win seats in the Spanish parliament since the late 70s and could emerge as a kingmaker in Spain’s increasingly fragmented political landscape.

The party, founded in late 2013, sent shockwaves through Spain after winning a surprise 11 percent of the vote and 12 seats in a regional election in Andalusia in December.”

  28. Swedish anti-deportation activist granted retrial (thelocal, Mar 29, 2019)

“A student activist who grounded a flight to delay the deportation of a rejected Afghan asylum seeker will face a retrial.

The Court of Appeal for Western Sweden has overturned the judgement in activist Elin Ersson’s case, due to comments one of the lay judges made months before the trial. In February, Ersson was fined Elin Ersson 3,000 kronor ($325) by a district court for breaking aviation law.

The judge described Ersson as a “criminal” in a comment on a news article.

“This statement must be considered as damaging the trust in the lay judge’s impartiality in the case,” the court of appeal wrote in a statement.

There were no dissenting opinions when the district court found Ersson guilty, with the exception of the lay judge, a member of the anti-immigration Sweden Democrat party, who had argued for a tougher punishment of 14 days in jail. That judge was removed from his role after the earlier comment came to light, but Ersson appealed the fine.

“The court of appeal’s decision isn’t surprising. After the statement the lay judge made on social media, there was no possibility for him to be seen as impartial. It’s also important that the court of appeal maintains high standards of impartiality in court, even in cases that raise a lot of attention among the public,” Ersson’s lawyer Tomas Fridh told the TT newswire.

Swedish courts use lay judges appointed by political parties to help the presiding professional judge. They are not qualified legal professionals and fulfill the role more commonly played by juries in countries like the UK or the US. In district courts three lay judges accompany one professional judge.

But the political influence on the lay judge appointment process is the root of a common criticism of Sweden’s legal system.

While in principle every Swedish citizen over the age of 18 is eligible for nomination, in practice, parties put forward their own members for the positions. By taking the judicial oath lay judges swear not to allow personal political views to influence their decision making, but studies have shown that those political affiliations may nonetheless impact verdicts in criminal cases.

Ersson protested against the Swedish government’s policy of not halting deportations to Afghanistan by boarding an Istanbul-bound flight carrying an Afghan man who had been denied asylum. She refused to sit down until he was let off, which meant that the flight could not take off.

She livestreamed her protest on Facebook, where it was viewed over five million times. Eventually, she was told that the man would be let off the plane and she also disembarked.”

  29. Victims of fatal domestic violence double in Sweden (thelocal, Mar 29, 2019)

“The number of people in Sweden killed by a partner or ex-partner more than doubled between 2017 and 2018, new statistics from National Council on Crime Prevention (Brå) show.

The potential cause of the increase is not yet clear, but an expert at Brå told The Local the high figure was “surprising”.

Overall, the number of cases of deadly violence in Sweden fell slightly in 2018, but remains at a high level with 108 such cases reported, down from 113 the year before (of which five victims were killed in the April terror attack, including four women). The term ‘deadly violence’ refers to crimes classified as murder, manslaughter, and assault which led to the victim’s death.

One of the biggest changes year on year was the proportion of incidents of deadly violence in which the perpetrator was a partner or ex-partner of the victim.

Almost a quarter of the cases, 26 in total, were carried out by a partner or ex-partner – more than twice as many as the previous year, when there were only 11 such cases.

Although most victims of deadly violence were male (69 percent), most people killed by a partner or ex-partner were women, with this kind of violence accounting for 67 percent of all murders of women: 22 women in total.

Only five percent of the men who were victims of deadly violence were attacked by a partner or ex-partner.

The proportion of women who were victims of deadly violence in general remained unchanged; a Brå report from 2017 stated that “the victim is a woman in around a third of all cases of deadly violence, and this has been the case throughout the 25 years that Brå has collected information”. This was also the case in 2018.

Over the period 2012-2017, an average of 25 women died each year because of deadly violence, but the number who died at the hands of their current or former partner was around half that figure.

Between 1990-1995, an average of 17 women died each year at the hands of a current or former partner, a figure that fell to 14 women each year by the period 2010-2015. In 2014, a total of 16 women were killed by a partner or an ex, and 12 women were killed in 2015.

In 2018, 22 women and four men died due to domestic violence, meaning that the figure for women (Brå did not have available figures for men) was much higher than the average figures from the past few decades.

“The number of 22 is very high over average, so it’s surprising, actually,” Nina Forelius from Brå told The Local.

However, she noted that variations sometimes occur year-to-year, and that the apparent stark rise “doesn’t necessarily mean anything” in terms of long-term trends or specific causes.

She added that the figures were “statistics, not an analysis” and said: “In June, Brå is releasing a research report, which is an in-depth study [into deadly violence] in which we’ll look at perpetrators, methods, and this kind of factor.”

If you need to speak to someone about domestic violence, you can contact Kvinnofridslinjen, Sweden’s National Women’s Helpline on 020-50 50 50, or Akillesjouren, a helpline for men suffering from domestic violence, on 08-29 63 99.”

  30. ‘Daesh landlord’ Jawad Bendaoud sentenced to four years in prison (france24, Mar 29, 2019)

“A Frenchman who rented his flat to the ringleader of the 2015 Paris attacks during a massive police manhunt was sentenced to four years in prison Friday for “hiding terrorists”.

Jawad Bendaoud was convicted on appeal of hiding Islamic State group jihadist Abdelhamid Abaaoud and his accomplice Chakib Akrouh, who holed up after the November 13 attacks in Bendaoud’s apartment in the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis.

He remained calm when the ruling was read out, just shaking his head slightly.

Bendaoud was the first person to be tried in France over the synchronised shooting and suicide attacks on the Bataclan concert hall, national stadium and several cafes in which a total of 130 people were killed.

The attacks were the worst in France since World War II…”

  31. Radical cleric Abu Hamza launches ‘make or break’ legal battle in US Supreme Court against terror convictions five years after being jailed for life (dailymail, mar 30, 2019)

“Hook-handed hate preacher Abu Hamza is desperately trying to mount a ‘make or break’ legal challenge to overturn his terror convictions in the US Supreme Court.

The radical imam, who preached at Finsbury Park mosque in north London in the 1990s, has pleaded with his lawyer to lodge another appeal in letters seen by The Telegraph.

The 60-year-old – whose real name is Mustafa Kamel Mustafa – was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole in 2014 after being convicted of 11 terrorism charges.

Letters to his lawyer reveal he plans to appeal against nine of his convictions. During their correspondence, he seemed to blame his lawyer, Michael Bachrach, of ignoring requests for updates on an appeal lodged in October, the newspaper reports.

The ruling led to two of his Hamza’s convictions being reversed, including one for helping his followers travel to Afghanistan to join Al-Qaeda in 2000. It resulted in Hamza’s convictions being reduced from 11 to nine.

In a November letter, the hate preacher wrote: ‘Please Michael, struggle to do my request in this letter… It is a make or break matter; I have no choice as I have no more room for manoeuvre. I am asking for the sincere effort not the result.

In another letter, sent this month, Hamza begged for his lawyer to respond, saying: ‘I have not heard from you in some time. I never received an of what i have been requested for ages despite I sending you many reminders [sic].’

Hamza is currently being held at the ADX Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado.

His lawyer said the appeal should be filed within two months, and if approved it’ll be ruled on by judges in 2021.

Mr Bachrach told The Telegraph he’s likely to argue the court’s original verdict in 2014 was ‘invalid’ because one of the witnesses had received incorrect treatment, the paper reports.

The radical cleric will fight for acquittal or a reduced sentence and will ask to be sent back to the UK – where he was originally serving an eight-year sentence before being extradited to the US in 2012.

Since he was convicted of 11 charges in October 2015 he has been kept in solitary confinement, only being allowed out of his cell for an hour a day.

Before US prosecutors won their eight-year legal battle to extradite him from the UK in October 2012 he was locked up at Belmarsh in south east London – where things were quite different.”
