“Police in the Swiss city of Schaffhausen have defended their decision to fine a man who used the words “Allahu akbar” in public.
The incident in May 2018, which saw the man fined 150 Swiss francs (€132) plus 60 francs in administrative charges, came to light this week after the 22-year-old involved went public with his story.
The young man, named by Swiss media as Orhan E., said he used the Islamic phrase ‘Allahu akbar’, which literally means ‘God is [the] greatest’, to express his amazement after spotting a friend of his near Schaffhausen’s goods train depot.
While he was speaking in Turkish to that friend, he was approached by an off-duty police officer. The policewoman then fined him for causing a public nuisance because he had used the phrase Allahu akbar in a “loud and clear” manner.
Local police have since defended the fine, saying the officer acted appropriately.
“At the time, there was a possibility that people could have become afraid or shocked,” a media spokesperson for the force, Patrick Caprez, told local daily Schaffhauser Nachrichten. The phrase ‘Allahu akbar’ has often been used by terrorists before carrying out attacks.
Schaffhausen security chief Romeo Bettini also backed the force’s decision to fine the man.
Bettini noted the manner in which the phrase had been spoken was key in the 2018 incident and added police officers would have acted in the same way if someone had run around a local square swearing loudly.
“It is completely wrong to say this phrase [Allahu akbar] is forbidden in Schaffhausen,” he said.
He added police always used their judgement as to what constituted a nuisance.
But Orhan E. denied he “shouted” the phrase, as asserted by police in their original report.
“I didn’t want any problems and I spent two minutes trying to explain why I had said what I did,” he told Schaffhauser Nachrichten.
Speaking to Swiss news site 20 Minuten, the man said: “We use ‘Allahu akbar” as a greeting and in almost every second sentence. When the weather is good, for example. We use it when we want to say we think something is positive.”
But the young man said his attempted explanation at the time hadn’t helped. The officer had called for armed back-up and the 22-year-old was “manhandled” while police demanded that he apologize.
He added he was threatened with jail if he didn’t pay the fine.
“I was born here [in Switzerland] and have never experienced anything like this. We live in a free country with religious freedom. Arbitrary police behaviour is not acceptable,” he said of the incident.
The man paid the fine promptly because he was afraid of jail time, he said.
He also told the Schaffhauser Nachrichten he had now come forward because he had heard of another similar incident in December where a border guard allegedly punched a young man who had said “Allahu akbar”.
“Just because terrorists misuse these two words doesn’t mean I have bad intentions when I say them,” he said.
Amir Dziri, Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Fribourg, said he believed it was unusual to use the phrase Allahu akbar – often used in Islamic liturgy – as a greeting, but noted this could be youth slang.
The professor said police had acted appropriately but also expressed his sympathy for the young man.
“If he really used the phrase in a harmless context then one can understand that he felt discriminated against,” he said.
“If this phrase was criminalized across the board it would be impinge on religious freedom,” Dziri said.
Zurich anti-racism group People-of-Color has now launched a criminal complaint against police in Schaffhausen.”

“Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Naqdi, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Deputy Commander for Cultural and Social Affairs, said in an interview that Iran could easily defeat Saudi Arabia, and threatened to overrun American military bases in the Middle East.
In an interview that was originally conducted on 28 December by the Iraqi television network Al-Nujab, but translated only Wednesday by the Middle East Media Research Institute, Naqdi said that the “Islamic revolution in Iran will not back down” from the goal of bringing defeat to Israel.
Naqdi, a former head of the Basij militia, said that there is no doubt that Israel must be “annihilated and destroyed” while adding that neither Russia nor any other country could intermediate.
“We were, we are, and we will continue to be the soldiers of Imam Khamenei until our last breath and until the last drop of our blood. I myself will hoist the flag of the Islamic Revolution in Jerusalem, Allah willing,” the general said.
He also dismissed the possibility of a US attack in Iran: “America will not launch a war against Iran,” he told the interviewer. “If it does — a possibility that I rule out — we will destroy all its military bases in the region. We currently stand before the gates and barbed wire [surrounding those bases], and if they make a wrong move, we will cross those barbed wire fences.”
General called Arabia’s military capabilities as “very laughable.” “We have a Farsi proverb that goes, ‘You cannot compare an ant to an elephant.’ Saudi Arabia is incapable of controlling even its domestic front. It uses fighter planes to bomb small neighbourhoods in Saudi Arabia. I believe that Saudi Arabia is much weaker than you might think. If we gave the order to a division in any of our 30 provinces, it would be able to defeat and destroy Saudi Arabia. It’s true that Saudi Arabia has many advanced weapons, but it cannot face an army like Iran’s.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said American sanctions are putting pressure on Iran and its people, yet in comments posted on his website he added that “Iran will overcome sanctions, slap US in face again.” The remarks came as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Iraq, stating that the US would double down on commercial and diplomatic efforts in the coming weeks to “put real pressure on Iran,” according to the Times of Israel.
The United States withdrew from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the Iran nuclear deal, in May 2018. After the move, Washington opted to re-impose a series of sanctions against Tehran that had been lifted under the agreement. The first package of US trade restrictions came into force in August. Later, in early November, Washington expanded its sanctions, targeting core sectors of Iran’s economy.”

“FRANCE has called on Iran to immediately stop all activities linked to ballistic missiles that could carry nuclear weapons after Tehran said it could put two satellites into orbit in the coming weeks.
Foreign ministry spokeswoman Agnes von der Muhll issued the demand after President Hassan Rouhani announced two satellites would be sent into space using Iran-made missiles. Ms von der Muhll said: “France recalls that the Iranian missile programme is not conform with UN Security Council Resolution 2231. It calls on Iran to immediately cease all ballistic missile-related activities designed to carry nuclear weapons, including tests using ballistic missile technology.”
Iran, which considers its space programme a matter of national pride, insists its space vehicle launches and missile tests are not violations of UN resolution and will continue.

Under the resolution that enshrined Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers – which Washington pulled out of last spring – the country is “called upon” to refrain from work for up to eight years on ballistic missiles designed to deliver nuclear weapons.
Tehran and Washington have been at loggerheads since the US withdrawal in May, followed by the reimposition sanctions that were lifted under the multinational agreement in 2016.

Chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), Nazim Ali, made the allegation at the anti-Israel, Khomenist al-Quds Day march in July, 2017. As Breitbart News reported, Ali was recorded saying that victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, “were murdered by Theresa May’s cronies, many of which are supporters of Zionist ideology”.

A Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) spokesperson confirmed soon after that they “received a file of evidence from the Metropolitan Police in relation to the actions of an individual at a demonstration on 18 June 2017.”
That case did not proceed.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) then sought to privately prosecute Nazim Ali but on Wednesday the High Court upheld the original CPS decision.
In the judgment, it was revealed the CPS halted the prosecution because it did not believe anything Ali said was “threatening, either explicitly or implicitly” and therefore a prosecution under Section 5 of the Public Order Act would likely fail.
The law forbids public behaviour that causes “harassment, alarm or distress” to those nearby.
The CPS also felt Ali “qualified his statements by blaming the Grenfell tragedy on Tory Party policies” and “thus merely engaged in strident criticism of the Government”, Lord Justice Hickinbottom noted.
The Jewish Chronicle reports the CAA argued this was irrational, saying Ali’s words meant that Zionists had deliberately given money to the Tories to faciliate tragedies like Grenfell, where 72 people had died in a fire days before Ali spoke.
The Lord Justice ruled the Grenfell comments had to be “viewed in the context of the address as a whole” and no other part of Ali’s comments alleged “a deliberate and direct intention on the part of Zionists to murder people in high-rise blocks”.
He said the CPS decision to stop the prosecution was reasonable “when that sentence is looked at in context”.”

“Egypt has deported two German nationals of Egyptian origin who had been detained last month over fears they were linked to terrorism in the Sinai.
Cairo Airport authorities deported Mahmoud Amr Mohamed Ezzat Abdel Aziz, 24, on arrival in Egypt from Saudi Arabia, Egypt Independent reports.
Abdel Aziz, a student at the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia, had been arrested after information was made available that he travelled in order to join Sinai Islamic terrorists.
The authorities added that since he did not commit any of the crimes stipulated by law and had waived Egyptian nationality, the authorities decided to deport him to Germany in coordination with the German embassy.
Isa El Sabbagh, from Giessen, was also repatriated on a flight to Frankfurt in coordination with the German embassy after being questioned by police.
Security officials say interrogations revealed Isa, 18, was believed to be an Islamic State follower and intended to join the group in restive northern Sinai, and is now banned from returning to Egypt. They say he’d been in contact with several IS members.
In 2014, Egypt declared a state of emergency in northern Sinai following a suicide bombing that killed 33 soldiers. The government said at the time, “the war in Sinai will last for a long time, as there are a lot of terrorists hiding in the peninsula, but this new level of attacks has put us in a new level of planning too in order to combat the terrorism there.””
Parliament REFUSES Petition to Reject UN Migrant Pact: ‘Already Been Agreed’ (breitbart, Jan 11, 2019)

“The British Parliament has refused to debate a petition to reject the UN compact on migration as it “has already been agreed by the UK Government.”
The petition, which has nearly 130,000 signatures, called on the Government to follow countries like the United States, Hungary, and Australia and reject the United Nations Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration, which is the first attempt at the “global governance” and institutionalisation of migration.
“The Committee has decided not to schedule a debate on this petition because the UN Global Compact on Migration has already been agreed by the UK Government,” said the response.
“The final text of the Compact was agreed by the UK Government in July last year. It was adopted by the UN General Assembly in December,” it added, before claiming that the compact is “not legally binding and cannot compel the UK Government to change its own immigration policies” despite legal experts warning that the agreement exists in a legal “grey area” and could be used to interpret national immigration law.
While Britain committed to the agreement at the Intergovernmental Conference in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 10th, the minimum number of signatures needed to trigger Parliament’s Backbench Business Committee to consider it for a full debate — 100,000 — had been reached a week before then, with Parliament only rejecting the debate Wednesday.
There has already been a precedent set for a country withdrawing from it, less than one month after it was formally endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in New York City: Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, who assumed office on January st, pulled out of the compact Wednesday, saying that his country would set its own immigration policy.
“Brazil is sovereign in deciding whether or not to accept migrants … Not anybody can come into our home, nor can anybody enter Brazil via a pact adopted by third parties. NO TO THE MIGRATION PACT,” President Bolsonaro wrote.
The United States was the first to announce it would not be signing the compact in November 2017, followed by Hungary, Austria, Australia, Israel, and several other countries.
There had been no debate by British lawmakers over the country’s entry into the agreement, despite the Conservative Government pledging to bring immigration down from the hundreds of thousands to tens of thousands a year in three consecutive General Elections.

Swedish Journalist: Teachers Have ‘Surrendered’ to Rising School Violence (breitbart, Jan 11, 2019)

“Swedish journalist Joakim Lamotte has spent time lecturing in schools across Sweden and claims that violence is on the rise because many teachers have simply given up on attempting to deal with the problem.
Mr Lamotte made his comments in a post on Facebook following a series of articles from Swedish broadcaster SVT that highlighted the problem of violence in schools.
“I saw a lot of schools in crisis in the years I went around and lectured. I often met teachers who surrendered, while pupils did exactly what they wanted,” Lamotte said, and gave an example of a school where he had lectured saying that pupils felt free to shout at him while at least eight teachers were present and did not act.
Lamotte claims he asked the teachers later why they had not kicked out the troublemakers.
“Their answer is completely bizarre. The teachers say that the guys in question are violent and have been suspended during periods from school. No one in the faculty has the desire to risk threats and abuse.”
“Other incidents I have encountered in my work are pupils who became violent at a school in Bohuslän because one day they were only served pork in the dining room,” he noted, and claimed in several schools teachers would not walk by themselves out of safety concerns.
“Threats, beatings, and stabbings now occur every day in Swedish schools and it increases dramatically. At the same time, teachers are getting less power while authorities and politicians are completely paralysed,” he noted.
In a recent article on school violence, SVT revealed that within the last five years Sweden had seen 224 incidents involving various kinds of weapons including knives. In the last year alone, there were 54 incidents with weapons, the highest of the past five years.
Total reports of threats, robberies, and physical violence in both primary schools and secondary schools have doubled within the same five year period according to the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
Mr Lamotte also sounded the alarm regarding sexual abuse in Swedish schools in 2017, saying there had been a wave of sexual assaults by newly arrived migrants and that teachers were too afraid to speak out on the issue in case they were branded racists.”
Report: UK Govt Failed to Deport 50,000 Rejected Asylum Seekers (breitbart, jan 11, 2019)

“The British government has failed to deport more than 50,000 rejected asylum seekers in a seven-year period, with most asylum claims being made by economic migrants rather than genuine refugees, a report has found.
A report has found that of the 80,813 asylum applications refused by the Home Office or withdrawn in the seven years to the end of 2016, only 29,659 individuals were removed. 51,154 remained.
Between 10,000 and 15,000 applications filed each year have no valid claim, and less than half of those have been removed, with removals falling from 15,000 per year in the early 2000s to fewer than 5,000 (2,541 enforced removals and 2,301 voluntary departures) last year.
The findings were published in a report by former UK Border Force chief David Wood for the think tank Civitas, which highlighted that “A large number of those claiming asylum here are not refugees but economic migrants with no legal claim to remain here, who exploit the asylum system to prolong their stay, often indefinitely.”
Mr Wood, who was also Director-General of Immigration Enforcement and a 31-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police’s organised crime and corruption units, recently weighed in on the sudden increase in the last two months of 2018 of Iranian boat migrants landing on Britain’s shores, warning that illegals and people-smugglers would use the UK Border Force cutters and rescue units as a “taxi service” to get them across the English Channel.
Writing in Controlling Britain’s Borders: The Challenge of Enforcing the UK’s Immigration Rules, Mr Wood said on the matter of the Channel migrants that, “As with the Mediterranean route, facilitators are paid to organise these crossings, and will resort to even less seaworthy vessels as the certainty of ‘rescue’ increases.
“The profits of the organised crime groups thus grow as the strategy succeeds with the migrants reaching the UK. The crime groups are then motivated to increase their lucrative trade.”

Paris (AFP) – French officials said Friday they expect planned “yellow vest” demonstrations this weekend to be bigger and more violent than a week ago, as the protest movement which had shown signs of fatigue at the end of 2018 gains fresh impetus.
National police chief Eric Morvan told France Inter radio he expected “a return to a level of mobilisation seen before the Christmas holidays”, for the ninth consecutive Saturday of nationwide protests, which have been characterised by clashes with police and destruction of property.
On January 5, around 50,000 people wearing the movement’s trademark high-visibility vests demonstrated in Paris and other cities, an increase over late December but far below the nearly 300,000 that turned out for the inaugural protest in mid-November.

UK: ‘Punish a Muslim Day’ hoaxer arrives for Old Bailey sentencing
A man from Lincoln who admitted to sending ‘Punish a Muslim Day’ letters to politicians and Muslims, appeared at the Old Bailey Court in London on Friday to receive his sentencing.
On October 12, the 35-year-old British national pleaded guilty to 15 offenses, including soliciting murder and staging a bomb hoax, after having sent letters containing the phrase ‘Punish a Muslim Day’ to Muslim politicians, former Prime Minister David Cameron and the Queen, among others.
Threatening letters were also sent to other Muslims, and to mosques, some of the containing suspicious white powders.
Hoax bomb letters linked to Parnham date back to 2007.
The court is awaiting a doctor’s assessment, requested by the presiding judge, and will adjourn before handing him a sentence, according to the Old Bailey.
France: VTC drivers launch ‘snail operation’ to block Paris roads
More than 100 VTC (tourist transport, with driver)-registered chauffeurs took to the streets of Paris on Friday, for a second day of protest.
The strikers, many of whom wore yellow vests, gathered at Porte d’Orleans in the French capital and launched a drive-slow operation (dubbed ‘snail operation’) on the Paris ring road, reportedly slowing traffic towards Orly airport.
The protesters are demanding a minimum fare, tax benefits on fuel, and a reduction in the number of license cards, according to local media reports.
Trial postponed for French boxing champ who hit police
Christophe Dettinger, the former professional boxer who attacked police officers during the most recent gilets jaunes protests in Paris, is on remand pending his postponed trial, now set for February 13.
Mr Dettinger, who is originally from Essonne (Ile-de-France) and was lightweight boxing Champion of France in 2007 and 2008, was captured on video repeatedly punching at least one police officer.
He was arrested on Monday December 7 after handing himself in to police.
Originally due to be judged immediately, Mr Dettinger was able to obtain a legal postponement of his trial, to allow him to prepare a case.
In a video published on Facebook just ahead of his arrest, he said: “I wanted to present things the way I see them. I have taken part in all of the Saturday protests in Paris. I have seen the repression, I saw police tear-gassing us, I saw the police hurting people, gassing older people.”
He said: “I am a normal citizen, I work, I just about manage to reach the end of the month, but it’s complicated. I am protesting for all retired people, for my children’s future.
“I am a gilet jaune. I have the anger of the people within me…I am proud of being French, and I am neither extreme right nor extreme left. I love my country.”
Attempting to explain his actions, he said that during last Saturday’s “Act 8” protest, he was once more attacked by police, together with a friend and his wife. This caused him to “react badly”, he said.
Soon after his arrest this week, some gilets jaunes protesters set up a crowdfunding page on the website Leetchi, in a bid to “support” Mr Dettinger and his family.
The page managed to gather over €117,000 via more than 8,000 donations, but following a political backlash, Leetchi decided to take the page down on Tuesday December 8.
In a statement, the website said: “Leetchi works to ensure that funds collected will only be used to finance legal costs, in accordance with our T&Cs and legislation. Our T&Cs forbid all incitations of hatred or violence.
“Taking into account the actions of Christophe Dettinger, no other use of the crowdfund would be acceptable. The funds will only be transferred if we are given just cause.”
The events come as a new poll showed that overall support for the gilets jaunes protests is on decline.
Just 31% of French people said that they actively “support” the movement; a drop of 10 percentage points compared to a similar poll from three weeks’ ago.
Yet, 60% admit to feeling some “support or sympathy” for the protesters’ plight. Just 31% of people said they were “hostile” to the protests.
Two in five (41%) French people said they intended to “participate in one way or another” in the “big debate” proposed by the government, to help the country out of crisis.
Another 40% said they “did not expect to take part”, and 18% said they “still do not know”.

Paranoia: Macron Govt Wonders if Italy, ‘Foreign Powers’ Funding Yellow Vests
An MP belonging to French President Emmanuel Macron’s La République en Marche! (LREM) has proposed that “foreign powers” could be behind the violent Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vest) protesters, naming Italy specifically.
LREM MP Marlène Schiappa, who serves as Secretary of State for Equality between Women and Men, made her comments in response to a crowdfunding campaign for French boxer Christophe Dettinger, who fought with police barehanded at Act VIII of the Yellow Vest protests in Paris in what became a viral video posted across France, L’Obs reports.
Supporters of Dettinger initially used the French crowdfunding website Leetchi to raise money for his legal costs but were shut down after raising over 146,000 euros in a 48-hour period. The site claimed that the donations had been closed due to the initial goal having been reached.
Ms Schiappa said she wanted more information on those who donated to the cause of the boxer but added that she did not want “an Excel spreadsheet with the names of the donors of the Leetchi fundraiser, it does not concern me at all.”
“The question I asked,” she continued, “is: who finances the rioters? Foreign powers? The question is not is not incongruous, given the positions of Italian officials.”
Earlier this week Italian deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Five Star Movement Luigi Di Maio expressed his support for the movement saying, “In France, as in Italy, politics has become deaf to the needs of citizens who have been kept out of the most important decisions affecting the people. The cry that rises strongly from the French squares is ultimately: ‘let us participate!”
Populist Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, the coalition partner of Di Maio, also gave support for the movement but condemned the violence associated with some of the protests.

After the Cold War, what is the biggest threat to America? The debate between Obama and Romney famously bogged down over the question of whether Russia was our biggest geopolitical foe. While Obama slammed Romney’s answer as a Cold War relic, after losing the next election, his party defines its foreign policy and domestic opposition around the fear that Russia is now more of a threat than ever.
Answers by other politicians have ranged from the structural, the national debt and internal divisions, to the inanimate and absurd; Bernie Sanders’ claim that global warming is our top national security threat. But assessments that name conditions rather than threat vectors are unhelpful because even when they are right, they tell us to address a weakness or failure, rather than meeting an external threat.
Being able to name and define external threats is vital for reaching informed national security decisions.

It’s fair to say that ex-congressman John Conyers (D, Mi.), who represented Michigan’s 13th district, was not a good guy. The octogenarian congressman willingly attended Farrakhan gatherings, signed on to anti-Israel legislation and was eventually forced to resign amid a string sexual harassment allegations. It’s also fair to say that his replacement, Rashida Tlaib, who identifies as “Palestinian,” is a walking train wreck by comparison.
In the hours following her inauguration, Tlaib demanded Trump’s impeachment, called him a “mother f*cker,” admitted that she used this language in front of her child, displayed a map in which the State of Israel was replaced with “Palestine,” insinuated that U.S. Jews maintain dual loyalties (this coming from a woman who draped herself in a “Palestinian” flag and garb during her inauguration) and implied that U.S. politicians are controlled by Israel.
This behavior is to be expected from someone like Tlaib, whose unhinged anti-Israel and anti-Semitic vitriol is well known. In fact, Tlaib is so anti-Israel that even the anti-Israel J Street withdrew support for her. What is surprising is the Democratic Party’s near-complete silence on the matter. The calumny of dual loyalty is nearly as old as antisemitism itself and is regurgitated with banal regularity by conspiracy theorists on the hard-right and left. Former KKK leader David Duke and Tlaib find common ground on this matter. Tlaib’s ally, the Farrakhan-supporting Linda Sarsour recently invoked the same anti-Semitic trope.

Why President Trump Shouldn’t Worry About a National Emergency “Precedent”

I am sympathetic to the argument that President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to build a wall would set a dangerous precedent that would then be abused by the Democrats to carry out radical gun control or global warming measures.
The problem with the argument is that I don’t think we’re at a point in history where there’s anything to restrain them from doing it anyway.(I don’t think that there is anything to prevent the Dems doing anything they want. The violent radicals are in charge of the Dems and are going to continue in charge for at least a decade, probably more.)
We just came off an administration that unilaterally passed its own version of illegal alien amnesty. And that illegal amnesty was then backed up by Democrat judges who have been insisting that Trump must abide by it.(This was done by Executive Order which was at best problematic and at worse out right illegal.)
This behavior had no precedent. But, much like ObamaCare’s abuse of reconciliation, it happened anyway.(Plus Obama care originated in the Senate, the Dems calling the penalty a tax made the entire bill illegal, the Constitution says all revenue bills have to orginate in the House, the People’s house. The Senate is suppose to be the States house to ensure that the rights of the states aren’t violated.)
If this were the Clinton administration which, as bad as it was in certain areas worked with Republicans and respected certain basic laws, precedents and public opinion, I would say that it’s a legitimate concern.
Obama completely broke the rule of law to force a radical agenda down America’s throat. And did so with judicial backing.(This illegal action by Obama has destroyed the rule of law in the US, it will take decades to restore the rule of law and to rebuild our confidence in the police forces.)
There’s no reason to think that a future Dem in the White House won’t be pushing a more radical agenda. The brakes are off the Left.
If we can build a wall now, it may help stop Texas from going the way of California, which would hand the Dems a permanent White House slot. And then we would pine for the moderate governance of Barack Obama.
So I’m sympathetic to the argument, but I don’t think it applies anymore. Precedents don’t matter. There’s a radical left at the wheel that will do anything it can to get its way, regardless of the norms, precedents or rule of law. It has the full backing of its judges and the media.
And it has to be fought on those terms.
Anything else is a failure to deal with reality.

“The US Department of State has approved thousands of requests made by older men wanting to bring their underage spouses or fiancées to the Land of the Free, government data collected by the Associated Press reveals.
In reviewing data from 2007 to 2017, reporters found that the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which is the agency that first examines petitions before passing them to the State Department for approval, received some 3.5 million petitions during that period of time.
Of the 3.5 million petitions, the State Department gave their seal of approval to 5,556 cases that detailed applicants, 149 of whom were aged 40 and older, wanting to bring their minor spouses or fiancées stateside. Another 2,926 approvals were given to minors seeking to bring older spouses to the US.
The agency also approved 204 requests made by minors reportedly wanting to bring their minor spouses. There were also 5,000 cases that saw adults petitioning on behalf of minors who wanted to bring their spouses to the US.
Data reviewed by the news agency also revealed that in the majority of the cases, girls were the younger partner in the relationship. In one case from 2011, authorities approved a petition submitted by a 14-year-old girl who was requesting that her 48-year-old spouse in Jamaica be allowed to relocate to the States.
According to the report, USCIS considers whether the marriage is legal in the home country of the spouse and in the US state where the petitioner resides. Once the petition clears the USCIS, it’s up to the State Department to give the final say.
In a statement to the publication, officials with the USCIS did not expand on the State Department’s process; however, they did indicate that roughly 2.6 percent of claims are rejected. Countries making the most petitions to admit minor spouses to the US included Mexico, Pakistan, Jordan, the Dominican Republic and Yemen.
At the age of 13, Naila Amin, a dual citizen from Pakistan, was forced into marrying her first cousin, who at the time was 26 years of age. The pair were initially betrothed to one another at the ages of eight and 21.
“My passport ruined my life,” Amin told the outlet. “I was a passport to him. They all wanted him here, and that was the way to do it.”
“I want to know: Why weren’t any red flags raised? Whoever was processing this application, they don’t look at it? They don’t think?” she questioned.
In Amin’s case, the petition ultimately fell through after she ran away from her New York City home, instead opting for an arduous life that saw her in and out of foster care and group homes before being able to get back on track.
But the matter of child brides isn’t only linked to petitions submitted to the USCIS. A 2017 report by the Tahirih Justice Center, an advocacy organization focused on protecting the rights of immigrant women and girls, found that more than 200,000 children under 18 were married in the US between 2010 and 2015. Some states allow individuals as young as 16 to marry, with some requiring a parental consent.
In January 2018, KNOX News profiled the case of a young woman who was 13 years old when her parents held a religious ceremony to bless her marriage to man in his mid-20s. For years the woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, lived with her husband. The pair are now separated, and fighting for custody of their daughter.
Data reviewed by AP was first obtained in 2017 by the Senate Homeland Security Committee at the initiative of US Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), who serves as the chairman of the committee, and then-US Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO). The two lawmakers have since criticized the USCIS for delaying the delivery of the report for more than a year.”

Three men, armed with what was described as a ‘machete’ and a baseball bat, escaped the scene in a small van along Vauxhall Road out of the city.
The victim and his sister were both taken to hospital where his condition is described as stable and his sister also received treatment.
