HAMILTON ONTARIO – Groups protest against each other at Hamilton’s City Hall
An estimated 80 protesters, some espousing far-right views and some belonging to Hamilton Against Fascism, exchanged taunts at Hamilton City Hall on Saturday.
Two small political factions — one on the far left and one on the far right — gathered at Hamilton City Hall Saturday to protest each other’s opposing views.
One group, with many wearing yellow vests, said it was protesting “corrupt government,” immigration policies, carbon taxes and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The other group, under the umbrella of the Hamilton Against Fascism organization, showed up to counterprotest the so-called “yellow vests.”
In all, about 80 people attended.
Ed Bethune of Hamilton Against Fascism said his group was there to counter the far right.
“Every so often, the far right and fascist movement tries to rebrand itself to look more respectable and more legitimate,” he said. “This time around, they are trying to co-opt the yellow vest protests in France.”
His group was there “to oppose and expose” them for their anti-immigration, anti-Muslim, and white supremacist views, he said.
The two sides taunted each other while police watched from the sidelines.
Justin Long, wearing a yellow vest, said his faction was protesting “corrupt government in general,” the United Nations, and the federal government’s immigration policies that he feels are putting the safety of Canadians at risk.

‘President against his people’: Salvini openly backs Yellow Vest protesters, lashing out at Macron
In an extraordinary public EU feud, Italy’s Matteo Salvini and his coalition partner have thrown their support behind France’s Yellow Vest movement, while Salvini also accused President Emmanuel Macron of being against his people.
“I support honest citizens who protest against a governing president [who is] against his people,” said the Italian deputy prime minister.
However, the leader of the Northern League added that he “firmly” condemns the recent violence that has marred the protests.
Vice-President of the Council of Ministers of Italy Luigi Di Maio, who is the leader of the Five-Star Movement (M5S), urged the demonstrators on his party’s blog “not to weaken.”
Di Maio said that politics, in both France and Italy, “has become deaf to the needs of citizens who have been kept out of the most important decisions affecting the people.”
The Yellow Vest movement began in mid-November 2018 as a protest against a proposed hike in fuel costs. It has since grown to encompass wider discontent among French people over living standards and Macron’s policies. At its peak, more than 280,000 people gathered to protest on the Champs-Elysees on November 17.
Macron and Salvini have a well-documented rivalry and history of public name-calling. Most recently, in December, Salvini mocked the French president as a “lab mouse elected to keep the elitist political system in place.”
The pair have often locked heads over immigration policy during the Mediterranean migrant crisis. In typical fashion the disagreement descended into a war of words, with Salvini calling Macron and “international embarrassment” last October after policemen were spotted dropping migrants off in an Italian forest on the countries shared border.

As the resumption of the Brexit debate looms in the House of Commons, it is reported that the European Commission is haughtily retaining its refusal to consider any revision to the Withdrawal Agreement (WA); this attitude is also backed by the numerous leaders of European Union countries whom UK PM Theresa May has contacted. Those leaders assume that, like most of them themselves, the UK will eventually grovel before the Commission and accept its dictate.
The European leaders are too young, perhaps, to remember that most of their countries would have become German dominions and satellites if the UK had not refused to grovel to Hitler in July 1940 after the Fall of France, fighting on alone in Europe and North Africa. As Germany discovered later that its misjudgment of the UK would end with the devastation of Germany, today the UK is preparing resolutely for a no-deal Brexit that will cost it dearly, but the EU more dearly.
For one thing, the European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources, Günther Oettinger, warned on December 27 in an interview with the Westfälische Rundschau that EU members will have to pay up if the UK saves itself the estimated €42 billion that it would owe the EU according to the provisions of the WA. Merely in 2019, Germany itself would have to pay about half a billion euros extra (“ein mittlerer dreistelliger Millionenbetrag”). As for himself, he is planning to leave the European Commission for the private sector in the spring, that is, about the time when the UK is scheduled to leave the EU (March 29).

Recent days and weeks have witnessed the two groups maligning each other beyond anything previously seen. Fatah and Hamas have reached a new level of mutual loathing. At times, it even seems as if Fatah and Hamas hate each other more than they hate Israel.
Many in the West say they would like to see Israel and the Palestinians return to the negotiating table. They want Israelis and Palestinians to resume the so-called peace process. They are hoping that Israel and the Palestinians will manage to reach a historic agreement that would end the Israeli-Arab conflict and bring real peace to the Middle East.
The region, however, does not need a “peace process” between Israel and the Palestinians. It needs one of a different type. The “peace process” that the Middle East is crying out for is one between Palestinians and Palestinians, one that would end their bloody, internecine war.

France to crack down on unauthorised ‘yellow vest’ protests: PM
PARIS: French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Monday (Jan 7) announced plans to ban participation in unauthorised demonstrations as the government scrambles to try to end weeks of violent “yellow vest” protests.
Seven weeks into rebellion marked by weekly clashes in Paris and other French cities, Philippe said the government would introduce a “new law punishing those who do not respect the requirement to declare (protests), those who take part in unauthorised demonstrations and those who arrive at demonstrations wearing face masks.”
He also announced plans to ban known “troublemakers” from taking part in demonstrations, in the same way known football hooligans have been banned from stadiums in the past.
In future, Philippe said, the onus would be on “the troublemakers, and not taxpayers, to pay for the damage caused” to businesses and property during the protests which began peacefully in mid-November over taxes but quickly became more radical.
Many of the “yellow vest” demonstrators are demanding that centrist President Emmanuel Macron resign, a demand dismissed as undemocratic by the government.
On Saturday, a group of protesters used a construction vehicle to smash open the doors of the building housing the ministry of government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux.
In other scenes that caused shock a former professional boxer was caught on camera beating up police officers.
“Those who question our institutions will not have the last word,” Philippe said, announcing plans to deploy 80,000 security force members nationwide for the next round of demonstrations.
‘THE ANGER OF THE PEOPLE’
The images of renewed violence and destruction in Paris on Saturday underscored the difficulty of containing a leaderless movement that appeared to be petering out at the end of 2018 but has since gained new momentum.
Around 50,000 “yellow vest” protesters took to the streets again on Saturday to denounce Macron’s policies, call for his resignation or demand more of a say in national law-making.
The police at times appeared defenceless, with former heavyweight fighter Christophe Dettinger, 37, filmed landing blows on officers guarding a bridge leading to the National Assembly.
Dettinger, known in the ring as “The Gypsy From Massy”, a town near Paris, turned himself into police in the capital on Monday morning.
In a video posted on YouTube on Sunday he described himself as an “ordinary citizen” acting out of anger with what he called the repressive tactics of the police.
“I am a yellow vest. I have the anger of the people in me,” he said.
Images of a policeman beating several protesters in the southern city of Toulon on Saturday were also widely condemned.
The police officer – a commander who was granted France’s highest award, the Legion d’Honneur, on Jan 1 – was referred to investigators after appearing to punch one protester in the face several times.
INCREASINGLY RADICAL
While the number of protesters has dwindled since December, the determination of a smaller but increasingly radical core of “yellow vest” protesters poses a dilemma for the government.
French police signalled a stricter approach last week when they arrested one of the leaders of the “yellow vests”, truck driver Eric Drouet, for failing to notify authorities about a demonstration.
The move led to criticism from political leaders on the far right and radical left, who have encouraged demonstrators to continue taking to the streets.
Budget Minister Gerald Darmanin on Monday sought to distinguish genuine protesters, who want lower taxes and more help for low-income families, from those “who are in the business of ultra-violence”.
“Faced with ultra-violence, we need to be ultra-severe. It needs to end,” he told RTL radio.
SUPPORT FROM ITALY
The “yellow vest” demonstrations have frequently turned violent since they began in mid-November, particularly on Dec 1 when crowds ransacked a museum in the Arc de Triomphe and daubed graffiti on the famed monument.
The protesters drew support from a unlikely source on Monday when the two leading figures of the populist government in Rome urged the “yellow vests” to continue, in comments which risk ramping up Italy’s war of words with Macron.
“Yellow vests, do not weaken!” Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio, who heads the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), wrote on his party’s blog.

France plans to introduce legislation to toughen sanctions on undeclared protests in response to violent “yellow-vest” demonstrations, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said on Monday in a hardening of the government’s stance on the unrest.
He spoke after rioters torched motorbikes and set barricades ablaze on Paris’s upmarket Boulevard Saint-Germain on Saturday, underscoring how protests against high living costs and President Emmanuel Macron have turned violent on the fringes.
“We need to preserve the right to demonstrate in France and we must sanction those who break the law,” Philippe told TF1 television.
“That’s why the government favours updating the law in order to sanction those who do not respect this obligation to declare protests, those who take part in undeclared protests, those who arrive at protests with balaclavas,” Philippe said.
He said the government could model the new law on existing legislation against football hooligans whereby individuals can be banned from stadiums. It could be introduced as soon as February, he said.
‘Thugs’ blamed for violence
Philippe also said the “casseurs,” or thugs, who have brought disruption and destruction to Paris and other major cities where shops have been looted and banks vandalized would be forced to pay for the damage they cause.
The latest “yellow vest” marches began peacefully but degenerated on Saturday afternoon as protesters threw missiles at riot police blocking bridges over the Seine.
Officers fired tear gas to prevent protesters crossing the river and reaching the National Assembly. One riverboat restaurant was set ablaze and a policeman was wounded when he was hit by a bicycle hurled from a street above the river bank.
Two months after they started blocking roads, occupying highway tollbooths and staging sometimes-violent street protests in Paris, the yellow vests aim to inject new momentum into a movement that weakened over the holidays.

UPDATE: Jasmyne Cannick, a communications and public affairs strategist who has worked with Gemmel Moore’s family, has announced that there will be a rally at 7 p.m. tonight at 1234 Laurel Ave., the home of Ed Buck, to call on the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department to arrest Buck and for District Attorney Jackie Lacey to “prosecute him for murder after another young Black gay man was found dead in his West Hollywood apartment of an apparent overdose.”
A young African-American man was found dead early this morning in the Laurel Avenue apartment of Ed Buck, where a death in July 2017 sparked a protest about its handling by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and about the reaction to the incident by Democratic Party politicians.
Sheriff’s deputies and the coroner were on the scene at 1234 Laurel Ave. at around 3:15 a.m. according to nearby residents.
The death on July 27, 2017, of Gemmel Moore, then 26, was deemed by the L.A. County Coroner’s office to be a result of an overdose of methamphetamine. A coroner’s report said drug paraphernalia was found in the home, along with sex toys and clear plastic bags containing what was suspected to be methamphetamine. The L.A. County District Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute Buck saying the evidence is “insufficient to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that (Buck) is responsible for the death of Gemmel Moore. Likewise, the admissible evidence is insufficient to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that suspect Buck furnished drugs to Gemmel Moore or that suspect Buck possessed drugs.”
Before the 2017 incident Buck, a gay white man in his early 60s, had been an active donor to Democratic candidates ranging from Hillary Clinton in her race for president to John D’Amico in his initial and successful race for a seat on the West Hollywood City Council.

“The ranks of prominent citizens opposed to a new Italian law cracking down on asylum-seekers swelled on Monday, with more governors announcing court challenges to the populist government’s measure.
The law, approved first in the form of a government decree and later by Parliament late last year, tightens criteria for migrants receiving humanitarian protection, granting that status only to victims of labor exploitation, human trafficking, domestic violence, natural calamities and a few other limited situations.
Previously, many asylum-seekers who failed to qualify for full asylum were accorded humanitarian protection, with Italy allowing them to stay for a fixed term and receive social benefits. Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who leads the anti-migrant League party, contends Italian authorities had been too elastic in the past in granting such protection.
The new law bans asylum-seekers from gaining residency, which is needed to apply for public housing or a place for their children in public nursery schools, as well as complete access to Italy’s national health care system. And those accorded humanitarian protection won’t be eligible for shelter in government-run facilities for asylum-seekers, sparking concern they’ll end up living on the street.
Piedmont Gov. Sergio Chiamparino told Sky TG24 TV Monday that he’ll ask Italy’s constitutional court to decide whether the law violates the Constitution. He said he’d join forces with Tuscany’s governor in the court challenge.
“A really wide movement is being created” to challenge the residency measure, Tuscany Gov. Enrico Rossi said in Florence. He explained that Tuscany’s challenge would take aim on the tightened criteria for humanitarian protection as well as the ban on achieving residency.
Umbria, another central region, also decided on a court challenge of the law.
Chiamparino said in the meanwhile his region would continue to provide full health care for asylum-seekers and insisted by doing so, he wasn’t disobeying the law.
“We are simply obeying a fundamental principle that someone with a health problem gets treatment,” Chiamparino said.
Last week, the mayors of Palermo, Naples and some smaller cities vowed not to implement the law. Others, like Milan’s mayor, sharply criticized the law, but said they would implement it unless courts ruled otherwise.
In Milan, on Monday evening, about 50 critics of the crackdown protested outside city hall. Some banged wooden spoons on pot lids to draw attention to their cause.
Among mayors criticizing the law are some from the 5-Star Movement, a government coalition partner. Livorno’s 5-Star Mayor Filippo Nogarin, while saying that laws must be respected, has slammed the measure as “anything but a good law, ethically and politically.”
Cracks have formed lately in the government coalition over migrant policy, with a prominent faction of the 5-Stars pushing for Italy to allow migrants rescued at sea from human traffickers’ unseaworthy boats to reach Italy.

Sea Watch reiterated the fear that “their psychological and health state may markedly worsen”.
It said “on board the Sea watch we are registering episodes of people refusing food.
“We can’t believe that all this is happening a few miles from European coasts”.
Sea Watch and Sea Eye- another NGO ship with 17 migrants aboard – have been off Malta for days as Italy and other countries have refused to open their ports to the migrants.
Meanwhile, the German government said Monday that it was willing to take in some of the 49 asylum seekers stranded on two NGO-run rescue ships after being saved in the Mediterranean.
“The German government expressed very quickly its willingness to participate (in the reception of the asylum seekers on the ships) within the remit of a solution of European solidarity,”
German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert told a press conference when asked about the people saved by the Sea Watch and Sea Eye vessels.
He said Berlin was engaged in “intense talks” with the European Commission and was supporting Brussels’ efforts to find a solution.”

A far-right German politician has been left for dead in brutal attack, his party has said.
Frank Magnitz, chairman of Germany’s AfD party, was badly beaten by three alleged assailants on Monday.
He is believed to have been jumped after leaving a New Year’s reception in Frankfurt’s Goethe Square.
Graphic images posted on the AfD Bremen Facebook page showed Magnitz lying in a hospital bed with a gaping head wound.
Describing the attack as a ‘politically-motivated attempted assassination’, the AfD said Magnitz was knocked unconscious and suffered a number of blows to the head.
He was reportedly saved after a builder intervened and chased off the three suspects, who remain at large.
He remains in hospital in a serious condition, a party spokesman said.
They added: “Today is a black day for democracy in Germany.”

Note: A few months back, I took a group of kids/young adults to a reptile zoo. Fun time was had by all.
But, one of the families visiting said zoo on a very quiet day included a toddler – 14 months or so old, according to the best of my estimation.
Part of the visit to the reptile zoo included a ‘hands-on’ session where 3 specimens were brought out, described and we were permitted to touch them. These are rotated during various visits and include an insect/tarantula (or similar)/scorpion, a type of lizard or turtle, and a snake. At some times, there was a change-up and a baby lemur was brought out, but that was the ‘general formula’ for the ‘hands-on’ part of the exhibit.
Brilliant – my little science students were excited and thrilled…in the true sense of the word ‘thrilled’ for the female ones…which is in itself interesting, because research has found that infants, as young as 1 month, have a markedly different response to spiders (that was specific to the study – the other categories were not tested in this particular study I had come across) with female infants having much more marked response to these than male infants. But, I digress…
On this particular day, a constrictor snake approximately 2.5m long was brought out as the final and most spectacular bit of the hands-on bit.
Well, no sooner was the snake outside its tupperware (with breathing holes drilled in) container than this toddler threw a most spectacular fit.
Now, I have raised a few kids of my own and have worked with autistic kids that throw fits – so I am completely familiar with ‘extreme toddler fits’. This was nothing like that!
Yes, the reaction was totally extreme – but the fear and panic that toddler exhibited was more primal than anything I have ever seen before – from humans or non-humans, when faced with predators.
Mom had to leave the room with the baby, and you could still hear the primal terror when they were 3 rooms away!!!
Which is a long way of saying that yes, we, humans, may believe ourselves to have transcended primal fears instilled into us by the necessity of surviving in a predator-filled world – but we have not.
We have just learned to find better excuses to label it in different ways – and some of us, by adulthood, have found ways of trying to suppress this suvival-beneficient-programming, but it is still there. Just below the surface.
And it is precisely BECAUSE it is palpably still there, and because they resent it, THAT is why SJWs and their ilk attack and attempt to destroy anyone who does not willfully act in opposition to this instinct…and why it makes them feel righteous and pious to do so.
They, too, feel it – but want to pretend that they do not have this, in order to fit in socially with the ‘tabula rasa’ fallacy (which they are brainwashed into believing by our neo-Marxist educators), and thus feel the need to destroy anyone who does…
