Sairin delivered his statement in response to Joanna Datuk Kitingan, chairwoman of the State Level Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan Organising Committee, vowing to continue to help Muslim women to get permission to partake in the pageant.
She claimed that it is important to practice inclusivity during the event as it helps “promote Kadazandusun culture.”
Sairin, however, argued that while he strongly supports the chairwoman’s “efforts in promoting the culture and traditions of the Kadazandusun community through Unduk Ngadau”, he also agrees with his colleagues in the Islamic community that Muslim women should not participate in the pageant.”

Trump spent three hours at a U.S. air base meeting with American troops during his visit. The president defended his decision to withdraw 2,000 U.S. forces from neighboring Syria, saying the U.S. military had all but eliminated IS-controlled territory there.

Marysville police are asking for the people who shot at the getaway car to come forward.
MARYSVILLE — The plan was simple: Steal tools and pawn them for money.
That’s what two men, 22 and 23, reportedly had in mind when they showed up to the Coastal Farm & Ranch store in Marysville on Saturday afternoon, according to a police report. They allegedly took four nail guns, each worth over $400, walked out of the store and got into a Honda Civic.
They didn’t expect to be surrounded by about six customers with guns raised.
One customer was standing in front of the car, yelling at the alleged thieves to get out.

“A judge on Wednesday ordered Belgium to organise the return of six Belgian children and their mothers from a Syrian refugee camp overseen by Kurdish forces.
The children, all aged six or under, are the offspring of alleged jihadist fighters and Brussels has so far resisted calls for their repatriation.
Wednesday’s ruling touches only on these six, but human rights defenders fear as many as 160 Belgian minors are trapped in the conflict zone.
A lower court had previously rejected a demand lodged by two women, each mother to three of the children, for their home government to intervene in the case.
But the Flemish-speaking Court of First Instance in Brussels has overturned that, ordering Belgium to take “all necessary and possible measures” to return them.
The state has been given 40 days to act or face fines of 5,000 euros per day per child.
And the court instructed Belgium to make contact with camp authorities, perhaps working through the diplomatic channels of a fellow European Union state.
Belgium must provide the children and their mothers with the appropriate identity papers to ensure a safe return.
As a proportion of its population, Belgium has been one of the main suppliers of Europeans travelling to fight for Islamist extremist groups in Syria and Iraq.
In all, more than 400 adults are thought to have left to join groups like the Islamic State or Al-Qaeda since 2013, and a much smaller number have returned.
But jihadist factions are under pressure now, both from US-backed Kurdish forces in the east of Syria and from the Russian and Iranian-backed Syrian government.
European governments fear returning jihadists will bring violence home but the presence of non-combattant family members has complicated security policy choices.
Belgium has argued that it has no consular representation in a Syria gripped by war since 2011, and is unable to help Belgian families there.
But Kurdish officials denounce the failure of European governments to take responsibility for what they say are 584 women and 1,250 children in their zone.
In the Belgian case, the two mothers aged 25 and 26 are in the Al-Hol refugee camp in far north eastern Syria, only a short distance from the Iraqi border.
“They have no freedom of movement,” Anouk Devenyns, a court spokeswoman and magistrate, told AFP as she commented on the ruling.
If the mothers are detained as suspected extremists on their return, they will be allowed to maintain contact with their children in Belgium, she said.”
German army ‘could recruit EU citizens’
Seven years after Germany scrapped conscription, its defence chief has said employing EU citizens is “an option” to fill expert posts.
Army general inspector Eberhard Zorn said the forces had to “look in all directions in times of a lack of qualified personnel”, such as doctors and IT specialists.
The armed forces have been beset by years of under-investment.
Germany aims to increase its military by 21,000 personnel by 2025.
It has also pledged to raise its defence budget from 1.2% to to 1.5% of its gross domestic product by 2024, in the face of criticism from President Donald Trump that it does not meet the Nato target of 2% of GDP.
Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen said in an interview on Thursday that 182,000 uniformed soldiers were now employed by the army, a rise of 6,500 in two years. Within seven years, that should reach 203,000.
She said the army was now made up of 12% women and this year alone one in three people applying to be an officer was a woman.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – A Russian blogger critical of the authorities was sentenced to six years in prison on Wednesday, his lawyer said, in an extortion case critics say is politically-motivated.
Alexander Valov, whose blog had been critical of the authorities in the southern Russian city of Sochi, was charged earlier this year with extorting money from federal lawmaker Yuri Napso.

Germany Considering ‘Mosque Tax’ to Free Local Muslims From Foreign Clout
Right now, most Muslim religious institutions in Germany reportedly rely on foreign assistance. The Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs is believed to be one of the largest organizations contributing to German mosques, as it exerts influence over more than 800 Muslim communities across the country.
Lawmakers from Germany’s grand coalition government are mulling introducing a “mosque tax” for the country’s Muslims, according to Deutsche Welle.
Burkhard Lischka, a lawmaker from Germany’s other governing party, the Social Democrats, described the initiative as something which is “worthy of discussion”, arguing that a mosque tax could help Islam in Germany become more independent.
The lawmakers’ proposal stipulates the introduction of a special tax to be paid by all practicing Muslims in Germany, which would then be redistributed by the government among officially registered Islamic religious institutions.
A similar tax is already in place in Germany and some other European countries for Catholic and Protestant Christians.
Mosques in Germany currently rely on donations amid concerns about their possible financing by foreign organizations and governments. All this comes in light of the growing clout of the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DITIB), which is directly controlled by Ankara and is considered to be one of the largest organizations contributing to Muslim religious institutions in the country.
According to official estimates, between 4.4 million and 4.7 million Muslims currently live in Germany.

The German government is considering a new “mosque tax” for the German Muslim community to pay for its own mosques rather than rely on foreign funding.
Similar to the church tax, the proposal is backed by Christian Democratic Union (CDU) parliamentary group vice-president Thorsten Frei who argued that a tax would allow Muslims in Germany to break free of foreign influences, Die Welt reports.
Mr Frei said the aim of the tax would be “that Islam in Germany emancipates itself from the influence of foreign states and gains a stronger domestic orientation.”
Michael Frieser of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) also backs the concept saying, “The goal must be self-financing to ensure the independence of the mosque communities,” and added that the tax would make funding of mosques less opaque than is the case with some foreign funding.
The Social Democrats (SPD), which are also part of the grand coalition with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU and the CSU, are also open to the idea according to SPD expert Burkhard Lischka who said the policy was “worthy of discussion” but said that a mosque tax would require more planning saying, “there is still a long way to go.”
Germany, along with neighbouring Austria, allows churches to take in taxes from members of the church with the Roman Catholic church in Germany raising £5.6 ($7.1) billion in 2017.
Turkey is one of the largest sources of foreign funding for mosques in Germany, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an officially opening a “mega-mosque” in Cologne at the end of September which was largely funded by the Turkish government.
As a result of the funding, the Turkish government has been able to expand its political influence, which the Council of Europe criticised, calling on the Erdo?an government to cease funding mosques and other Muslim cultural projects.
One of the main Turkish-German Islamic associations, DITIB, has also been the subject of controversy when it was revealed that imams belonging to the organisation had been spying on worshipers on behalf of the Erdo?an regime.

Dolkun Isa doesn’t have the money or powerful backing that most people who successfully lobby Congress have. But he’s going up against the government of China anyway.
Isa is the head of the World Uyghur Congress, an international nonprofit group that represents millions of ethnic Uyghurs who want independence from China’s repressive rule. They accuse the Communist Party of trying to suppress their religion and dilute their culture. Activists like Isa say Uyghurs are regularly subjected to inhumane conditions, psychological abuse, and forced indoctrination.
A series of recent reports documenting China’s alleged human rights abuses against Uyghurs stirred alarm among politicians on Capitol Hill. So Isa went to Washington in November to meet with powerful legislators in hopes of gathering more American support for his community.
He may have some reason to be optimistic. Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Bob Menendez of New Jersey recently co-sponsored “The Uyghur Human Rights Act,” in an attempt to punish Chinese officials for allegedly holding at least 1 million Uyghurs in internment camps.
“This is something from a horror movie … not something you imagine happening in the 21st century,” Rubio told VICE News. “We cannot allow our foreign policy, our commitment to human rights, to be decided by whether or not there will be retaliation.”

African media reports that Kenya may soon be forced to relinquish control of its largest and most lucrative port in Mombasa to Chinese control.
Other assets related to the inland shipment of goods from the port, including the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi, and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), may also be compromised in the event of a Chinese port takeover.
Kenya has reportedly taken extremely large loans from the Communist government for the development of some major highways, and especially for the SGR, which will form a crucial transport link to and from Nairobi for the import and export of goods through Mombasa.

What does the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas do when it is not firing rockets at Israel or sending Palestinians to clash with Israeli soldiers along the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel? It sends its security officers to arrest, interrogate, intimidate and harass anyone who dares to criticize Hamas.
It is not as if anyone was expecting Hamas to act differently. The terms democracy and freedom of expression have never been in Hamas’s dictionary. For Hamas, it is either you are with us or you are against us. There is no third option for Palestinians living under Hamas’s rule in the Gaza Strip, even for those who were previously associated with Hamas, but later changed their minds and dared to express a different opinion or, worse, criticize the Islamist movement.
In the past week alone, Hamas has arrested two Palestinian academics on suspicion that they voiced criticism of the group: professor of biology Salah Jadallah and writer Khader Mihjez.
Jadallah was arrested earlier this week after he posted a comment on Facebook in which he accused the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip of enjoying a comfortable life while Palestinians were wallowing in poverty and misery. In the December 19 post, he wrote: “It’s a life of hypocrisy, lies and quackery when an official lives in luxury while his people are overstrained and impoverished.” He went on to accuse the Hamas officials of stealing funds earmarked for the people in order to build villas and mansions for themselves.

When Turkey first applied for full membership in the European Union in 1987, the world was an entirely different place — even the rich club had a different name: the European Economic Community. In March 2003, just a few months after he was elected Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdo?an said that Turkey was “very much ready to be part of the European Union family.” In October 2005, formal accession negotiations between Turkey and the EU began.
Today, 31 years after the first date, the alliance seems to be broken, with no signs in the foreseeable future of a marriage between two perfectly unsuitable adults. “The ACLU is creating more national immigration policy than the federal government.” That was Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones back in 2015, after the American Civil Liberties Union sent letters to sheriff’s departments across the country explaining that immigration detainers are requests, not commands, and threatening legal action with those sheriffs who comply.
Since more than 200 jurisdictions failed to honor all ICE detainers, Jones said, “we’ve become a de facto sanctuary state.” California is now an actual sanctuary state, and has made false-documented illegals, even violent criminals, a privileged, protected class. The ACLU still takes measures to ensure that no criminals ever get deported.
Of the 1,303 immigrants at Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department facilities in 2017, 83 percent of those detainees were Hispanic. That year ICE conducted 51 interviews at county facilities, barely 2 percent of all law enforcement interviews that took place. Yet ACLU attorney Sean Riordan expressed concern about, “the experiences people have had in being transferred from sheriff’s custody to ICE custody.”
The ACLU also strives to keep the U.S. border open for virtually anybody who wants to cross it, for any reason. In August, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its decision to remove asylum protections for victims of domestic and gang violence.

French ‘yellow vest’ protests planned for Saturday, New Year’s Eve
PARIS: The “yellow vest” anti-government protests that have rocked France will be held on Saturday and New Year’s Eve, and continue into 2019, several sources in the movement said on Thursday (Dec 27).
“The yellow vests are still mobilised,” said Laetitia Dewalle, one spokeswoman of the protest movement which does not have a traditional leadership structure.
Several of the movement’s representatives said a seventh straight Saturday of protests will take place across the country this weekend.
Yellow-vest representative Benjamin Cauchy said protesters would be out on New Year’s Eve as well, “to show that the mobilisation will not end in the new year”.
Cauchy also warned that if the concessions made so far by President Emmanuel Macron did not add up, “we will end up with a large-scale mobilisation in late January”.
Earlier on Thursday, Paris city officials said that New Year’s Eve celebrations on the Champs-Elysees will go ahead despite the protest plans on the famed avenue.
Tens of thousands of tourists and locals traditionally ring in the new year on the wide shopping boulevard, which ends with the Arc de Triomphe monument.
The Champs-Elysees has since last month been the epicentre of repeated violent protests against Macron’s government, with the Arc de Triomphe ransacked on Dec 1.
While the numbers turning out at protests across the country have dwindled dramatically, several thousand people are listed on Facebook as planning to attend what it calls a “festive and non-violent event” on New Year’s Eve.
Paris officials said they would continue as planned with preparations for a fireworks display and sound and light show on the Champs-Elysees under the theme “fraternity”.
The avenue is a regular gathering point for national celebrations such as Bastille Day, the Tour de France and France’s victory this summer in the football World Cup.
But on recent Saturdays it has been the scene of violent clashes between riot police and “yellow vest” protesters who accuse Macron of favouring the rich with his policies.
The movement sprang up online in October and spiralled into the worst crisis of Macron’s presidency, with tens of thousands blocking roads and protesting across France.
Macron sought to defuse the crisis in mid-December by announcing a €10 billion (US$11.4 billion) package of measures to help pensioners and low-paid workers.
Since then the “yellow vests” have been split between moderates willing to engage in dialogue with the government and others intent on remaining at the barricades.
Priscillia Ludosky, who launched an online petition against rising fuel taxes in May that is credited with a major role in sparking the movement, said the measures announced by Macron were “insufficient and without any real desire to improve the living standard of the French”.

New Year’s Eve celebrations on the Champs-Élysées in Paris will go ahead despite plans for another “yellow vest” anti-government protest on the famed avenue, city officials said on Thursday.

Ohio Legislature Overrides Gov. Kasich’s Veto of Gun Owners Rights Bill
Ohio Governor John Kasich — who wants everyone to know that he’s “a Second Amendment guy” — vetoed a gun owners rights bill that reached his desk earlier this month. The bill had been overwhelmingly passed in both the house and senate and speculation at the time was that there were enough votes in both houses to override the postman’s son’s veto.
That speculation proved to be accurate. As fox8.com reports:
At the time, Kasich said signing the stand your ground law “would be detrimental to the safety of all of our citizens.” In reality, he was upset that the legislature refused to pass a gun violence restraining order bill that he could sign.
The bill shifts the burden of proof from lawful gun owners who use firearms for self defense to prosecutors. The bill also preempts local gun control laws in the state.
This will probably ruin the governor’s whole week. Lawful gun owners in Ohio, however, are no doubt celebrating the victory.

Somalia bans Christmas – “We are a Muslim country”
Around 100 million Christians worldwide are discriminated against or persecuted according to current estimates. A drastic example is Somalia. The East African country has even banned the Christian Christmas.
Christmas can’t be celebrated by hundreds of Christians in Somalia this year. The government of the East African country banned the Christian festival on Wednesday and ordered the security forces to stop Christmas celebrations across the country.
Religious Affairs Minister Sheikh Mohamed Kheyroov told Radio Mogadishu, “We are a Muslim country and there is zero tolerance for such un-Islamic celebrations in our country.”
In Somalia, the vast majority of the population believes in Sunni Islam. The Islamist militia Al-Shabaab has been spreading fear and terror for years. The extremists want to build a so-called theocracy.
100 million Christians are persecuted worldwide
Somalia is not an isolated case. According to current estimates, around 100 million Christians worldwide are persecuted or discriminated against, said Wednesday the president of the Catholic aid organization Missio Munich, Wolfgang Huber.
Huber said, especially in countries where Christians are in the minority, the situation has worsened. In Pakistan, for example, there are always attacks. “We live in a state of constant fear because we do not know where extremists may plan an attack,” said Pakistan Bishops’ Conference Chair and Missio Project Partner, Archbishop Joseph Coutts.
Discrimination also exists in India, in African countries such as Kenya, South Sudan and Egypt. Important for a peaceful coexistence is the inter-religious dialogue on the ground, emphasized the mission.
