There are various ways that the reactions of our viewers who fail to understand why we did not report on the deadly attack on a doctor in Offenburg reached us. For all those who have not heard about it: A Somali asylum seeker has apparently stabbed a 51-year-old family doctor in Offenburg (motive unclear) with a knife in Offenburg. So why didn´t we have that as the top story of the news?
First, let me clarify that the most important thing: killing a person is the worst thing you can imagine. My sympathy goes to the family and all those near to the 51-year-old doctor. And at the same time, anger seizes me when I read what happened in Offenburg. Yes, I condemn such a crime. The perpetrator must be held accountable with all consequence.
Now, I will explain how Tagesschau (Dailyshow/News) evaluates such a case. Foremost in my mind are the relatives of the victim, who might be reading/hearing about the death of their loved one. My aim is to do this in such a way without sounding cynical.
In the news, we report on things of social, national or international relevance. Things that are important to the majority of the approximately 83 million Germans. We can not report every murder case. I think that most of our critics would agree with that. Where opinions differ however, is the question of whether we should report if the suspect is an asylum seeker. In my view, we should do that when asylum seekers are disproportionately involved in homicides. That’s not the case, as far as we can research it. That’s why we decided against reporting.
Well, and now comes the sentence that is very important to me. All those who say that the doctor would still be alive today if this refugee had not come into the country are right. That’s right, that’s right. But I say just as clearly that this too is not a reason for me to report on individual criminal cases in the news, because the same still applies from what I have described above. I expressly acknowledge that it is perfectly legitimate to ask. Anyone who criticizes us for our attitude in the Offenburg case is not a racist. So accordingly, I will ignore the letters that accuse us of having reported on the death of a “colored” musician named Aretha Franklin instead of Offenburg.
Even though we are sad or angry at incidents like Offenburg, we continue to try to report with journalistic and ethical principles independently and impartially. That is what the public may rightfully expect of us.

Brazil state asks top court to halt Venezuelan migration
BRASILIA (Reuters) – The government of the northern Brazilian state of Roraima on Monday asked the country’s supreme court to halt the entry of Venezuelan immigrants, increasing pressure on the federal government to resolve a growing regional crisis.
Roraima’s request followed a weekend of violence in the state, where tens of thousands of Venezuelans have arrived in recent years, fleeing economic and political turmoil in their country.
“As a result of the grave conflicts over the weekend, the state of Roraima submitted a fastrack request … seeking the temporary suspension of Venezuelan immigration through the border,” the state government said in a statement.
The supreme court rejected a previous request by Roraima, as the Brazilian constitution mandates an open border.
The court is unlikely to agree to the new request.

Mr King told the FT that the law would apply to small social media apps as well as the bigger players.

A study published last month by the not-for-profit Counter Extremism Project said that between March and June, 1,348 videos related to the Islamic State group were uploaded on to YouTube, via 278 separate accounts, garnering more than 163,000 views.
The report said that 24% of the videos had remained online for more than two hours.
The BBC has asked Google, Twitter and Facebook to comment.
Google has previously said that more than half of the videos YouTube removes for containing violent extremism have had fewer than 10 views.
If the proposed regulation is approved, it will be the first time the European Commission has explicitly targeted tech firms’ handling of illegal content.”

SPAIN –‘Allahu Akbar!’: Knife-Man Shot Dead After Attacking Spanish Police
An Algerian migrant male was shot dead early Monday morning by Spanish police after he attempted to attack officers with a knife.
A female police officer fired on and killed the 29-year-old man outside the police station in Cornellà de Llobregat in Catalonia, Spain, the Catalan edition of elPeriodico reports. Besides the slain attacker, there were no reported injuries.
The man, who has been named by local media as Algerian-origin Spanish resident Abdelouahab Taib, attempted to gain access to the station at 05:52 Monday morning, claiming he wanted to make an inquiry. Once inside, he drew a large a knife and shouted “Allahu Akbar” [Allah is the Greatest] — the familiar Islamic phrase which has increasingly come to be associated with the opening stages of terror attacks across Europe in recent years.
He was shot in the reception area of the station by one of the officers present. An ambulance was brought to the scene but the Algerian male subsequently died of his wounds.
The station and the assailant’s residence have been cordoned off by police, who are now investigating the background and motivation for the attack. Spanish police say they are treating the incident as a terrorist attack.
Witnesses looked on Monday afternoon as specialist police units including the bomb squad, police sniffer dogs, specialist firearms, and forensics entered the block of flats where the assailant lived. The entry, which appeared to have been conducted on the assumption the property contained further potential hazards, was delayed while officers waited for a judge’s warrant to enter the premises.
A Tweet by the Mossos, the Spanish police, confirms the incident and the shooting of the aggressor.
In reaction to the attack, which police said was a “clearly predetermined” effort to kill members of the police, officers and police stations around Spain stepped up security Monday.

Those looking to travel deeper into Europe through France now face Italian and French police, who are cracking down on well-known passages. “The flow of third world migrants must be brought to a halt, European leaders said over the weekend, with Sebastian Kurz calling for EU nations to begin blocking boats from Africa.
Der Standard reported the Austrian Chancellor [pictured above, left] held a telephone conversation with Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, in which the pair agreed that the situation with migrants being ferried across the Mediterranean was not sustainable.
“We are both of the opinion that the EU cannot just allow every ship to dock,” said Kurtz, urging other nations in the bloc to close their ports to boats carrying illegal immigrants.
According to a statement from Austria’s Federal Chancellery published Sunday, the Conservative head of state said migrant-laden vessels should be stopped at the EU’s external border, and asylum seekers either returned to their country of origin or delivered to a safe third country on mainland Africa.
The discussion between the two leaders came amidst a fresh row between Malta and Italy over migrants, with Italian Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli calling for sanctions on the tiny island nation over its refusal to open “its ports to solidarity” and take in rescue boats.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said the nation “will be forced to take action that would end the trafficking business forever,” if Malta refused to take responsibility over a batch of 177 migrants stuck on the Diciotti vessel, adding: “That means escorting people back to Libya”.
On Saturday meanwhile, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš [pictured top, right] urged Europe to send a strong message showing the continent’s doors have closed, declaring: “We must make it clear that the security of our people is the highest priority for us”.
“Evidence and developments from elsewhere in Europe” illustrate that “migration is a big problem and it needs to be stopped”, he said in an interview published Saturday, highlighting recent events in Sweden, where rampaging youths set fire to as many as 100 vehicles.
“First of all, we have to send a clear signal that Europe is closed and that no one can come in anymore. The message must be: ‘Stay home, we will help you there’,” Babiš told Prague newspaper Právo.
“I went to politics to fight for Czech interests and our security,” added the populist billionaire, who has been described by some as a ‘Czech Donald Trump’. “When I said that we would not take even one illegal immigrant, that is what happened.””

Foreign ministry requests EU intervention
(ANSA) – Rome, August 20 – The Coast Guard’s Diciotti ship carrying 177 rescued migrants will dock at Catania, Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli said Monday.
But Interior Minister Matteo Salvini won’t let any migrants off until the EU tells him they will go elsewhere, interior ministry sources said. “The gallant men of the coast guard,” Toninelli tweeted, “performed their duty saving human lives just 17 miles from Lampedusa”.
He added: “Now Europe must swiftly play its part.” Salvini won’t let the ship dock at Catania, however, until he gets assurances from the EU that the migrants will go elsewhere, interior ministry sources said Monday. The sources stressed that answers from Europe were expected.
Until they are provided, they said, no one will be allowed to get off the ship.
Earlier Salvini said the ship would be allowed to land in Italy if the European Union does its bit to redistribute the migrants.
Meanwhile the Italian foreign ministry “officially and formally” requested the intervention of the EU.
The Diciotti picked up the migrants last week after they were spotted in Maltese waters and Salvini has stressed they must be spread across the EU if the ship is to land in Italy.
Otherwise, he has said, they will be sent back to Libya.
Salvini said on Italian TV: “the ship may land in Italy, as long as the 177 migrants are distributed, in a spirit of solidarity by the EU, which is made up of 27 countries”.
“Let them pay us this courtesy to play their part, given that we have taken in more than 700,000 people who came by sea”.
He reiterated the intention of sending the 177 back to Libya unless the EU does its bit.

White House Rejects Deal from Turkey for Release of U.S. Pastor Andrew Brunson
The White House reportedly rejected a deal from Turkey involving the release of American pastor Andrew Brunson.
According to a senior White House official, the Turkish government claimed they would drop the terrorism charges against Brunson if the U.S. agreed to stop the investigation and fines against Turkish bank Halkbank. The U.S. reportedly refused the offer.
Brunson has been held in Turkey for two years on espionage and terrorism-related charges. He is accused of having ties to a group that allegedly organized a failed 2016 coup attempt.

Erdogan invokes patriotism, Islam as lira remains under pressure
ISTANBUL (Reuters) – President Tayyip Erdogan appealed to Turks’ religious and patriotic feelings ahead of a major Muslim holiday on Monday, promising they would not be brought “to their knees” by an economic crisis that has battered the lira currency.
The lira has tumbled some 40 percent this year, hit by worries about Erdogan’s influence over monetary policy and a worsening diplomatic rift with the United States. The sell-off has spread to other emerging market currencies and global stocks in recent weeks.
Highlighting the increased tensions, the U.S. embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara came under brief gunfire early on Monday by unknown assailants in an attack condemned by Erdogan’s spokesman as a bid “to create chaos”. Nobody was hurt. A person was later detained, Anadolu news agency said.
In a pre-recorded address to mark the four-day Eid al-Adha festival, which starts on Tuesday, Erdogan, a pious Muslim, sounded a characteristically defiant note as he lashed out at those selling the lira.
“The attack on our economy has absolutely no difference from attacks on our call to prayer and our flag. The goal is the same. The goal is to bring Turkey and the Turkish people to their knees – to take it prisoner,” Erdogan said in the televised address.

Iranian man stabs young woman to death on the street in Düsseldorf, Germany
This Monday morning in the city of Düsseldorf , an Iranian man stabbed a German woman to death in the street.
The victim died in a hospital shortly after the knife attack.
Police are urgently searching for the perpetrator, whom they now know to be an immigrant from Iran.
She’s already searched the apartment, but she hasn’t found the man. A special task force SEK was deployed.
A police spokeswoman reported that the woman’s injuries were so severe that she died in hospital less than two hours after the crime. How old the woman was, the police did not want to tell, but it is said to be a young woman.
The perp is apparently on the run with the murder weapon, a knife. The cops couldn’t find it at the scene. A homicide unit has been set up, the spokeswoman added. He had not been found in his apartment in the Bilk district. The apartment had been searched. A special task force (SEK) also provided support. An eyewitness described that the victim walked screaming across Bach Street at about 7.30 in the morning and called for help – persecuted by a man who cried out loud.

TAIPEI (Reuters) – Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on Monday the self-ruled island would not bow to pressure after her high-profile trip to Latin America, including stops in the United States, which drew criticism from China.
China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has ramped up military and diplomatic pressure in an attempt to assert Chinese sovereignty over the island, even as the U.S. government makes fresh overtures to it.

Recommended replacement for Democratic Party’s new slogan: ‘We hate America’

Last month, the Democratic Party unveiled its new campaign slogan heading into the midterms. Their choice? “For the People.” Although the slogan deserved — and received — ridicule because of its communist overtones, the phrase doesn’t quite capture the true sentiment among Democrats seeking to take the House in November and the White House in 2020.
A far more truthful slogan would be “We hate America.”
We saw this most recently in the self-destructive observation that “America was never that great” made by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a speech last week, but Democrats’ loathing for the nation go further back that that. “I hate America” was certainly the message that carried Barack Obama to victory in 2008, when he promised (threatened?) to “fundamentally transform the United States of America,” then went on after winning the White House to go abroad and apologize for the nation’s “arrogance.”
Now the sentiment has emerged again in statements made by the party’s leading contenders for the presidential nomination in 2020. Let’s take a look.

Maybe the belief that the president harbors murderous intent toward his enemies was prompted by the claim on MSNBC last week that “10% of Republicans would support Trump killing their parents.” At least John Heilemann, the commentator who uttered those words, assured his shocked fellow panelists that he was just blowing smoke.
Not so the New York Times’s Michelle Goldberg, who was a guest last Friday on MSNBC’s “Meet the Press Daily.” The discussion turned contentious early when with Goldberg challenged the fact that President Trump is the leader of the free world. The term leader of the free world harks back to the Cold War and has been used ever since as a synonym for the United States or its current sitting president.
When fellow panelist John Podhoretz, evidently mindful of this history, protested that Donald Trump is by default the leader of the free world, Goldberg insisted that that title belongs to Angela Merkel. Those up with current events might submit that Angela Merkel is barely the leader of Germany, but I digress.
