Both families moved to Windsor, Ont., in search of better job security, proximity to family and friends, and a larger community of Arabic speakers.

In 2015, community members in Lewisporte banded together to sponsor one family from Iraq and one from Syria through the blended visa office-referred program, holding fundraisers and taking donations to bring them to Canada.

A white African lioness stares blankly at the spectators crowded outside her small, steel-barred cage, her extraordinary coat dotted with numerous spots, the result of a fungal skin disease that has marred her once pristine fur.

The ailment is curable – or, rather, it should be. But at the Karachi Zoological Garden there are not enough vets to give proper treatment to its more than 850 animals, many held in cages built over a century ago.

The figures come from a study of rape cases from January 2016 to May 2017 and looked specifically at cases in which the victim did not know their attacker, Danish tabloid BT reports.

According to the study carried out by the newspaper, there were 12 convictions for rape in which the attacker was a stranger to their victim and in those 12 cases, 10 of the attackers came from migrant backgrounds or were immigrants.

The tabloid claims that the convicted rapists came from a variety of countries including Eastern European nations such as Bulgaria and Macedonia as well as countries outside of Europe like Somalia, Iraq, and Eritrea.

Inger Støjberg, Danish Minister for Immigration and Integration, commented on the study saying: “It’s something we’ve seen through many years that crime rates are much higher in immigrant circles than they are among Danes.”

  13. Finland Aims to Block Repeat Asylum Applications to Stop Swindle Tactics (sputniknews, Jul 5, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201807051066057472-finland-asylum-applications/

“At present, there are thousands of migrants whose asylum applications have been turned down. Many file new applications citing new grounds, such as religious conversion and homosexuality in an attempt to delay deportation.

Finland’s Interior Ministry is pushing to change the legal system in order to stop migrants from re-applying multiple times, as is currently allowed under the law, national broadcaster Yle reported.

Today, rejected migrants often launch their asylum processes anew in a bid to delay imminent deportation, the Interior Ministry said. Interior Minister Kai Mykkänen has stressed that the opportunity to abuse the system in order to create delays should be limited.

Both the number of repeat applications and their percentage of overall applications have grown in recent years, as thousands of migrants have received negative asylum decisions and are trying to avoid being sent back to their respective homelands. More than half of the repeat applicants are Iraqis, who also constituted the largest share of migrants arriving in Finland during the peak of the migrant crisis.

Right now repeat applications are not being considered if they use the same rationale as the initial one. The proposed changes would make it easier for authorities to deport people from the country if their first application was dismissed.

According to the Interior Ministry, any re-application must cite a clear, valid reason for granting asylum.

“If someone has new grounds for asylum, they must be presented as early and comprehensively as possible,” Interior Ministry senior specialist Kukka Krüger said.

Some of the most oft-cited reasons for re-application include conversion to Christianity and fear of persecution as apostate in one’s respective home country. Another typical scenario includes individuals citing their homosexuality, which they somehow failed to mention in the original application, as grounds for the new filing.

According to Krüger, though, such applications will be considered in practice even if the legislative change goes ahead.

In 2017, Finland made positive decisions on 40 percent of all asylum applicants in 2017, up from only 27 percent in 2016. According to Finland’s Migration Service (Migri), in 2016, mostly quick and easy applications were processed, in many of which the applicants clearly had no grounds for protection. Only in 2017 did Migri by its own admission move on to more challenging applications. The number of applications that Migri dealt with in 2016 totaled 28,000, falling to 9,400 in 2017.”

  14. Memes Are Safe: European Parliament Rejects Controversial EU Copyright Law (sputniknews, Jul 5, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201807051066064113-eu-law-copyright-parliament/

“The EU Copyright Directive, which is aimed at protecting the intellectual property of people who author material that is uploaded to the internet, has come under criticism because it could effectively lead banning parody content on the world wide web, such as viral memes, for example.

Members of the European Parliament in Strasbourg have rejected the copyright directive, with 318 voting against, 278 in favor and 31 abstaining.

Article 13 of the directive, which was rejected by European MPs, states that online media would be liable if its users upload or publish unlicensed content, including photos, videos, source code or music. According to the bill, such actions would require either that a license fee be paid, that the content be pre-filtered or that it be automatically censored.

The bill has faced harsh criticism from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, net neutrality expert Tim Wu, internet pioneer Vint Cerf and other specialists in the field.

First proposed in 2016, the document was intended to update copyright rules in order to tackle piracy and to introduce “fair pay” for artists and media when the fruits of their labor were used online and in real life. Opponents of the bill, however, have claimed that it would endanger freedom of expression and the public’s access to information.”

  15. 10,000 police officers took sick leave due to stress or anxiety over the past year – the largest number in history  (dailymail, Jul 5, 2018)
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5919575/10-000-police-officers-took-sick-leave-stress-anxiety-past-year.html

“Nearly 10,000 police officers took time off sick suffering from stress or anxiety over the past year – the largest number in history.

Freedom of information requests reveal that the number of officers taking time off with stress has rocketed by an astonishing 77 per cent over the past four years.

In the year to March 2014, 5,460 officers took time off for stress, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, but this had soared to 9,672 in the year to March 2018.

With 122,000 police officers in the country, that’s nearly one in 12 taking time off because of the stresses of the job. The Dorset, Essex and Nottinghamshire forces did not respond to the FoI request, meaning the true number of officers with stress is likely to be over the 10,000 mark.

The highest number signed off were at the Met, with 1,086 officers off sick in the past year.

Manchester (720) and the West Midlands (601) were next, while the lowest figures were from Wiltshire and Durham, with just 70 officers each off sick with stress.

Ché Donald, vice-chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said the figures were ‘no surprise’.

He said: ‘Officers are still under increasing demand.

‘Numbers haven’t changed and you’ve got a pressure-cooker environment exacerbated by the job itself which involves exposure to traumatic incidents. Police officers are broken.

‘If you don’t reduce the strain that officers are under, even with the best occupational health in the world, all you are going to have is a steady stream of officers wanting to access that service. We know the causes but we are only tackling the symptoms.’

Mr Donald said more officers were needed on the streets to plug the gaps and that nothing will change unless numbers were boosted. He added: ‘We need to have an honest conversation with the public about this.

‘We are policing 2018 with 1995 numbers and crime has changed. We need to ask – are we fit for purpose? Something needs to change. Otherwise the future remains bleak.’

One police officer, who asked not to be named but who has been with the Met Police for more than ten years, said this week that officers were increasingly taking time off sick with stress because they felt they had no support.

He said: ‘Most of the officers I know feel there is very little support for them in their moment of need.

‘Many of us are out there by ourselves – the days of two bobbies strolling down the street is long gone. We are dealing with an increase in crime at the same time as officer numbers are cut and the strain on officers is sometimes overwhelming.

‘I have seen many friends leave the service in the past five years because they cannot take the daily stresses any more.’

A spokesman for the Home Office said: ‘It is the responsibility of chief officers – supported by the College of Policing – to ensure the welfare of their staff.’

He added: ‘The Government takes the issue of police wellbeing very seriously and has invested in programmes, including targeted mental health support and £7.5 million over three years for a dedicated national welfare service, to directly support officers.’”

“Former Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has slammed a proposal by the populist Sweden Democrats to hold a referendum on European Union membership calling the prospect of a vote “dangerous”.

The former leader of the Moderate Party called the proposition of an EU membership referendum, which was advocated by Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson last month, as, “not just a bad idea, it’s a dangerous idea”, Aftonbladet reports.

“Firstly, the EU has a major impact on political stability in most of Europe. Secondly, it is crucial to our economy. The single internal market is crucial for a foreign trade-dependent nation like Sweden,” Bild said.

Claiming that the Sweden Democrats wanted to throw the country into the same situation as the UK after the Brexit vote, Bildt said: “It’s the single biggest danger to Sweden’s prosperity development in the future.”…”

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/egypt-sentences-14-life-belonging-banned-islamists-56378259

“An Egyptian court has sentenced 14 people, including an adviser to an ousted Islamist president, to life in prison for membership in the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

The state-run Al Ahram news website reported on Thursday that out of the 14, eight were sentenced in absentia.

Thursday’s verdict by the Cairo Criminal Court included 15-year-sentences that were handed down to six other defendants while one person was sentenced to 10 years. The verdicts can be appealed.

Along with Brotherhood membership, charges included possessing firearms, violating citizens’ personal freedoms and disrupting constitutional provisions.

Egypt has cracked down severely on Islamists since the 2013 ouster of President Mohammed Morsi, who hailed from the Brotherhood, following mass protests against his one-year divisive rule.

The Brotherhood was designated a “terrorist organization” months after Morsi’s ouster.”

  18. SLÀV performances has been cancelled

The Montreal International Jazz Festival (FIJM) cancels all performances of SLAV because of the racial controversy surrounding the show staged by Robert Lepage.

In a statement released Wednesday morning, the organization of the Festival claims to have been “shaken and strongly affected by all the testimonials received.” It apologizes to those who have been injured, and adds that this was not their intention at all.

African-American musician Moses Sumney withdrew from the FIJM on Tuesday due to SLâV’s presence in the lineup. Mr. Sumney blames the show for being led by a white man (Robert Lepage) and a white singer (Betty Bonifassi) performs songs composed by African-American slaves. The 28-year-old Californian said on Twitter that he could not present his music to the Festival in good conscience after learning that they continued to defend this event publicly.

On Wednesday, the Jazz Festival said inclusion and bridging between communities is essential. The organization of the summer event states that the decision to cancel future performances was made in agreement with Betty Bonifassi.

In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Robert Lepage promised “to react to the controversy by the end of the week.”
SLV has been at the heart of a controversy since last week, when many voices have spoken out against the presentation of the show, which, they say, represents a racist appropriation of black culture.

Whites should not enjoy the history, culture and suffering of blacks, said Lucas Charlie Rose, a hip-hop artist who even organized a rally against the show.

Joined by The Canadian Press on Wednesday, activist Vincent Mousseau welcomed “this first step to make the Montreal and Quebec art scene more anti-racist”…..

  21. RAND: Terror Has Cost EU Countries £160 Billion Since 2004 (breitbart, Jul 5, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/07/05/study-terror-costs-eu-countries-160-billion-2004-2018/

“A study by the RAND Corporation has revealed that from 2004 to 2016, terrorism cost European Union countries £160 billion ($210bn) with France and the UK losing the most.

The report, which was prepared for the European Parliament, says that as a result of terrorist acts, the UK economy lost £38.6 billion ($51.1bn) following the 7/7 bombings in 2005, while France lost an estimated £38 billion ($50.3bn) within the same period that saw the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attacks and the Bataclan massacre later that same year, as well as a large number of other, smaller terror events.

“Besides the obvious physical devastation and emotional trauma, there is a negative impact on economic growth in the countries where these terrorist attacks take place. When you bear in mind the infrequent nature of terror events in Europe, the GDP losses that occur to national economies are notable,” senior RAND economist Marco Hafner said.

Mr Hafner added that terrorism can also have an impact on the psychology of people and companies and may change their spending habits. The phenomenon was clearly seen in places like Paris, where following the 2015 terrorist attacks, tourism to the French capital dropped significantly.

“Some people may value their future less and ‘live in the moment more.’ These effects can impact how people consume and save, potentially leading to an increase in consumption and decrease in savings and investment rates by companies. The end result is economic losses across Europe,” Hafner said.

RAND noted several potential policies to curb terrorism including strengthening ties between European law enforcement agencies but noted some of the recommendations “could have implications for human rights legislation and data protection across the EU”.

One major policy proposal from the think tank was to counter terrorist financing. Earlier this year, French investigators were able to identify 416 financial donors to the Islamic State terror group.

Paris prosecutor François Molins noted the large number of “micro-transactions” used by Islamic State supporters and security services claimed the group may be sitting on as much as £2.7 billion in cash.”

  22. Trump will tell NATO nations U.S. cannot be the world’s piggy bank

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (Reuters) – President Donald Trump will tell fellow NATO countries at next week’s summit that the United States cannot be “the world’s piggy bank,” White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said on Tuesday.

“What the president is going to do is go into these meetings with the mindset to protect the American people, stand with our partners and allies – but as he has said many times before America is thought so often to be the world’s piggy bank. And that’s gotta stop,” Gidley told reporters as Trump flew to West Virginia. Trump has pressured some NATO allies to significantly increase military expenditure.

  23. Merkel warns of worldwide financial crisis

BERLIN –– German Chancellor Angela Merkel raised the specter of a new global financial crisis as she warned of the potential fallout from a trade war with the U.S., saying tariffs on European cars would be “much more serious” than levies on steel and aluminum.

In an address to Germany’s lower house of parliament Wednesday, Merkel cited President Donald Trump’s threat of targeting U.S. imports of cars from Europe, which risk hitting Germany the hardest. She backed efforts by the European Union and U.S. negotiators to reach a deal this month.

“The international financial crisis, which ensured that we now act in the framework of the (Group of 20), would never have been resolved so quickly, despite the pain, if we hadn’t cooperated in a multilateral fashion in the spirit of comradeship,” Merkel said. “This has to happen.”

As the leader of Europe’s biggest economy, Merkel underscored her resolve to fight for the survival of post-World War II global institutions under attack by the Trump administration. At the same time, she renewed her counterattack against U.S. criticism of German exports by saying that the U.S. has a trade surplus with the EU if services are included.

“This is taking on the contours of a trade conflict. I don’t want to use words that go any further,” Merkel said in her speech. “It’s worth every effort to try to defuse this so that this conflict doesn’t become a war.”

  24. WhatsApp ‘horrified’ over India lynchings, promises action

WhatsApp said Wednesday it was “horrified” by a spate of lynchings in India sparked by false rumours shared on its platform as the government accused the messaging service of irresponsibility.

More than 20 people have been killed in India in the last two months, according to media reports, after rumours were spread on smartphones about child kidnappers, thieves and sexual predators.

The attacks — usually targeting outsiders — have left authorities scrambling to mount an effective response, with awareness campaigns and public alerts having limited effect.

A stern statement issued by the electronics and IT ministry late on Tuesday expressed the government’s “deep disapproval” to the senior management of WhatsApp over the “irresponsible and explosive messages”.

“The government has also conveyed in no uncertain terms that WhatsApp must take immediate action to end this menace,” it added.

    • WhatsApp in India says partnership with government, society needed to combat misinformation

MUMBAI (Reuters) – Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp messenger service has responded to a call from India’s technology ministry to curb the spread of false information on its platform, saying such a task required a partnership between the pair as well as with society in general.

India is WhatsApp’s biggest market with over 200 million users. But false information on its app this year has contributed toward the triggering of mass beatings of more than a dozen people, at least three of whom have died.

On Sunday, five more people were lynched in the western state of Maharashtra on suspicion of being child abductors.

The rise in such incidents prompted the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Tuesday to ask WhatsApp to take immediate steps to prevent the circulation of false information and provocative content.

The ministry also said WhatsApp “cannot evade accountability and responsibility” when such services are abused by users to spread such misinformation.

  25. Uganda leader says social media used for ‘lying’, defends tax for access
    [Reuters]
    By Elias Biryabarema

KAMPALA (Reuters) – Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has defended the country’s new social media tax, saying Ugandans were using such platforms for “lying”, and squandering the nation’s hard currency on fees to foreign-owned telecoms firms.

In May Uganda’s parliament passed new tax laws that introduced a levy of 200 shillings ($0.05) per day for access to a range of online services.

The platforms that have been identified by the country’s revenue service for the tax include Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Google Hangouts, YouTube, Skype, Yahoo Messenger and many others.

The tax, collected by mobile phone internet service providers since July 1, is equivalent to about 20 percent of what typical Ugandan users pay for their mobile phone data plans.

In a statement on Twitter, Museveni described social media as a “luxury by those who are enjoying themselves or those who are malicious…all the moral reasons are in favor of that tax.”

Ugandan social media users, he said, were “endlessly donating money to foreign telephone companies through chatting or even lying.”

    • Facebook and Apple Disagree on How to Curb Fake News for U.S. Midterms

(Bloomberg) — Apple and Facebook have figured out how to keep us glued to their devices and platforms. But they haven’t figured out how to curb the misinformation that plagued them during the 2016 election and have struggled to regain public trust. And now, in the run-up to the 2018 midterms, they certainly don’t agree on a solution.

Last week, Apple launched a human-curated political news section to help readers steer clear of falsehoods surrounding the midterms. The company’s announcement reignited a fiery debate with Facebook about whether tech giants should hire people to curate news or rely on algorithms instead.

Apple has used human editors to curate news content in “Top News” and other specialized sections since the application first launched in 2015, and said it will continue to do so for the midterm elections news section. The company uses a combination of human editors and machine learning to manage more tailored content in personalized feeds for users.

“News was kind of going a little crazy,” said Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook at the recent Fortune CEO Initiative, subtly referring to Facebook’s struggle with the foreign actors such as Russia, profiteers and bots that took advantage of its News Feed algorithms for financial and political gain during the presidential election. “We felt the top stories should be selected by humans,” Cook said.

  26. Mueller Taps More Prosecutors to Help With Growing Trump Probe

(Bloomberg) — Special Counsel Robert Mueller is tapping additional Justice Department resources for help with new legal battles as his year-old investigation of Russian interference with the 2016 election continues to expand.

As Mueller pursues his probe, he’s making more use of career prosecutors from the offices of U.S. attorneys and from Justice Department headquarters, as well as FBI agents — a sign that he may be laying the groundwork to hand off parts of his investigation eventually, several current and former U.S. officials said.

  27. Fish for flour? Barter is the new currency in collapsing Venezuela

RIO CHICO, Venezuela (Reuters) – Under the midday sun, dozens of fishermen wait to sell their day’s catch by a lagoon in the town of Rio Chico on the Caribbean coast of Venezuela. But they aren’t expecting cash in return.

Instead, they’re swapping mullets and snappers for packages of flour, rice and cooking oil.

“There is no cash here, only barter,” said Mileidy Lovera, 30, walking along the shore with a cooler of fish that her husband had caught. She hoped to exchange it for food to feed her four children, or medicine to treat her son’s epilepsy.

  28. Maduro warns Venezuela army over Trump ‘invasion’ plans

Caracas (AFP) – President Nicolas Maduro urged his armed forces Wednesday to be on guard following news reports in the United States that a year ago President Donald Trump raised the possibility of invading Venezuela.

“You cannot lower you guard for even a second, because we will defend the greatest right our homeland has had in all of its history,” Maduro said at a military ceremony, “which is to live in peace.”

He alluded to reports in the US press which said that last August Trump asked foreign policy advisers about the possibility of invading Venezuela, which the Trump administration has derided as a corrupt, leftwing dictatorship.

Trump raised the idea in August 2017 during a meeting about sanctions the United States has imposed on oil rich Venezuela, CNN said, quoting a senior administration official.

Trump’s advisers said no, as did Latin American leaders with whom Trump also raised the idea, CNN said.

  29. Major medical convention in San Francisco canceled, unsafe streets cited as reason
By Howard Portnoy July 4, 2018

Tony Bennett may have left his heart in San Francisco, but a huge medical convention will not be leaving its dollars in the City by the Bay, according to CBS affiliate KPIX. The organizers of the event claim its members don’t feel safe on the streets.

Tourists once took home memories of famed cable cars. These days, too often it is of the image of someone begging, or dancing in circles, or just wandering around the streets intoxicated or mentally ill.

“You can smell it,” says one tourist.

“I come from a third world county and it is not as bad as this,” says another.

The individuals may have been reacting to a malodorous 20-pound bag of human excrement that someone left on the sidewalk last Saturday in the city’s Tenderloin district. Or perhaps it was to the open-air urinal that the city installed in its Dolores Park in 2016 in the hopes of discouraging public urination on the streets.

  30. Judge shuts down federal prosecutors in ‘prejudice’ ruling: No more shots at the Bundys
By Daily Caller News Foundation July 4, 2018

A federal judge rejected prosecutors’ request Tuesday to reconsider her dismissal of the case against Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, his two sons and friend Ryan Payne.

U.S. District Judge Gloria M. Navarro dismissed conspiracy charges against the four men on Jan. 8 after finding that prosecutors had acted “with prejudice” throughout the trial, The Oregonian reported. Federal prosecutors violated federal law and failed to share evidence favorable to the defendants case with the court. (RELATED: Bundy Case Dismissed, Judge Orders Rancher Released)

“The Court’s finding of outrageous government conduct was not in error,” Navarro wrote in her 11-page ruling, obtained by The Oregonian. “On the contrary, a universal sense of justice was violated by the Government’s failure to provide evidence that is potentially exculpatory.”

The prosecutors’ request did not make any new arguments or bring forth any evidence that Navarro had not already considered in her decision to dismiss the case.

The U.K. government has reportedly told President Trump he must not meet Brexit architect and former U.K. Independence Party leader Nigel Farage when Trump visits the U.K. later this month.

The U.K. Daily Telegraph, citing a source within the British government, reports that 10 Downing Street made it clear that Trump “must not meet Farage” during his working visit to the U.K. on July 13.

Trump has embraced Farage, who is also a Fox News contributor, and called him “the man behind Brexit” during the 2016 campaign.

Farage told Fox News he would not comment on any conversations he had with the White House but said the Telegraph report was “utterly consistent” with past behavior from the U.K. government.

“The one thing they do not want me doing is having a photograph with the U.S. president when he’s in London with both of us saying ‘Brexit is a great idea, why doesn’t the government just get on with it?’”

  34. AUSTRALIA – BRISBANE – Christian fundamentalists confront Muslim leader at Brisbane mosque to condemn Islam

Police have been called after an ugly confrontation broke out at a Brisbane mosque between activists describing themselves as Christian documentary makers and Islamic leaders.

The group of at least four activists, who were involved in a similar incident at the Kuraby mosque yesterday, confronted worshippers at a Darra mosque in Brisbane’s south-west just before midday on Thursday.

When they were denied access, a heated argument broke out between self-declared activist Logan Robertson and Ali Kadri from the Islamic Council of Queensland.

Mr Kadri asked: “I’m trying to talk to you in a nice manner, why are you responding in such an aggressive manner?”

Mr Robertson replied: “Because I hate the religion of Islam. I don’t hate Muslims, I hate the religion.”

Police intervened and forced the group to leave the property.

Authorities said a group of up to six men went to a mosque at Kuraby yesterday and harassed some of the worshippers in the lead-up to 1:00pm prayers.

Nobody was injured in the incident and no charges were laid.

Mr Kadri said a teenage boy was verbally abused during yesterday’s incident and was called a terrorist.

“Why did you abuse a 15-year-old Muslim kid then?” Mr Kadri asked.

Mr Robertson replied: “We didn’t abuse him.”

Mr Robertson, who said he represented the Pillar Baptist Church at Ipswich, also claimed he was part of a group making a film on Islam.

“We’re making a documentary about your false religion that’s what we are trying to do,” Mr Robertson said.

“You are not a patriot, you are a hateful hatemonger — that’s what you are, my friend,” Mr Kadri said.

“Despite you being a hatemonger, I don’t hate you.”

‘What’s next, will they come into our houses?’

Mr Kadri said the men were “extremists” and likened them to “white ISIS [Islamic State]”.

“Unfortunately if we don’t rein these kind of people in this country, then these people in absence of law will not only just harm minorities like us.

“They are going to harm their own people who don’t agree with them … so to me, he is an extremist,” Mr Kadri said.

“I think these kinds of people are white ISIS.”

Mr Kadri said security would be increased at mosques around the state and most of them would now be locked at night.

“I don’t think there is any justification for these kind of things … our mosques are a peaceful congregation,” he said.

“Do we have to wait for somebody to get killed before we realise? This kind of hatred has to be addressed and condemned.

“Before, it was individuals on the corner street … now they’ve actually come inside a mosque — what’s next, will they come into our houses?”

Not long after the confrontation inside the Darra mosque, police stopped the men on the side of a road and confiscated their camera equipment.

“We’ll continue making our documentary,” Mr Robertson said.

He told media he was not racist.

“We’ve got Asians in our church, there’s Pacific Islanders in our church — there’s all types of races in our church. We’re not racist at all, it’s about a religion,” he said.

    Who is Logan Robertson?

A self-proclaimed pastor of the Pillar Baptist Church, which opened at Goodna, west of Brisbane, within the past 12 months.

It is not affiliated with the mainstream Baptist denomination.

The church declares it is anti-abortion, anti-gay and anti-Islam.

Mr Robertson posts sermons on social media and also released a “documentary” critical of the Mormon faith.

On the church’s website, Mr Robertson describes his church as a “New Testament Independent Fundamental Baptist Church”.

“Our Church is a friendly group of believers who have a strong desire for truthful biblical preaching, that isn’t watered down or compromised,” the website says.

In New Zealand, Mr Robertson sparked controversy by saying people in gay marriages should be shot, and that New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern should “get in the kitchen where women belong”.

He was rebuked by Baptist Churches of New Zealand in 2014, who said he had never been affiliated with their denomination.

“The NZ Baptist churches have been demeaned by his vitriol, leaving many of our Baptist church members and pastors wrongly implicated by Robertson’s actions,” the church said.

New Zealand police reportedly launched an investigation into Mr Robertson but dropped the case on the basis there was no evidence to suggest he had committed any crimes.

  35. Brian Ross Parts Ways With ABC News After False Report On Trump

After 24 years with ABC News, Brian Ross announced on Monday that he’s parting ways with the network. The decision comes a little over six months after Ross falsely reported that Donald Trump ordered adviser Mike Flynn to contact Russian officials during the 2016 campaign — a claim that sent the stock market diving and left the Democrats’ salivating over the belief they’d finally got their evidence of “collusion” to take down Trump.

“After a great run of 24 years, we have decided to pack up and move on from ABC News, an organization that has meant so much to us,” Ross and longtime executive producer Rhonda Schwartz said in a statement Monday. “While we are signing off from ABC News, we are hardly leaving investigative journalism. There is much more to do.”

  36. Hezbollah’s Indefinite Presence in Syria

    by Sirwan Kajjo
    July 5, 2018 at 5:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/12608/hezbollah-syria

After weeks of shuttle diplomacy allegedly carried out by Russia and Israel, Iranian forces and allied militias — including the so-called “military wing” of the Lebanon-based organization Hezbollah, all of which has been designated as a terrorist group by the US — reportedly began to withdraw from parts of southern Syria, near Israel’s border. According to other reports, however, many Hezbollah fighters, disguised as members of the Syrian army, have simply remained on their bases to escape being targeted by the Israel Air Force. Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Israel’s air force has carried out sporadic strikes against Iranian and Hezbollah bases and convoys across its neighbor on the north. After more than seven years of fighting alongside the Assad regime in Syria, the Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah is highly unlikely to make an easy exit from the war-torn territory, no matter what supposed agreements are reached or promises made.

In a televised speech on “Quds Day” — which Iran has marked every year since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 — Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah addressed his supporters as follows:

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/12608/hezbollah-syria

      • …What must Israel do to prevent this?

The Syrians are advancing southward against the last rebel strongholds in the Daraa area. The IAF must stop that advance by striking at the movement of forces and Syrian positions. The drawing of heavy casualties must be added to the list of Israeli objectives in Syria.

This is of crucial importance because of the unique demographic attributes of Israel’s enemies, the Alawite regime, its Hezbollah supporters, and even the Iranians.…

    • Israel lays down red lines for postwar relations with Syria

As Syrian army continues its offensive on rebel-held areas near the Golan border, Israel signals it expects 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement to be honored; ‘We must do everything to clarify to the Russians and the Assad government that we won’t accept any armed presence in demilitarized areas,’ says Minister Erdan.

  38. Richard: I don’t remember enough German to search for the related video can one of our German Friends do that?

In an apparent attempt to sweep under the rug a recent double homicide in Hamburg, Germany, authorities there censored the story. They also raided the apartments of a witness who filmed a video describing the murder, and a blogger who posted the video on YouTube.

The murder, which made headlines worldwide, occurred on the morning of April 12. The assailant, Mourtala Madou, a 33-year-old illegal immigrant from Niger, stabbed his German ex-girlfriend, identified as Sandra P., and their one-year-old daughter, Miriam, at a Hamburg subway station. The child died at the scene; her mother died later, at the hospital. The woman’s three-year-old son witnessed the murders.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Madou — who initially fled the scene, but then called the police and was arrested shortly thereafter — acted “out of anger and revenge,” because the day before the incident, the court had denied him joint custody of his daughter.

It later emerged that for months Madou had been threatening to harm Sandra P. and the baby. A senior public prosecutor told reporters that the police investigated the woman’s charges, but had concluded that the “threats were not meant seriously” and did not pursue the case.

Furthermore, half a year earlier, in October 2017, a judge revoked a restraining order that Sandra P. had obtained against Madou two months earlier, on the grounds that he saw “no evidence” that Madou had threatened her. That was when Madou’s threats increased and he explicitly announced: “I’m going to kill our daughter, and then I kill you!”
