  1. Islamic misogyny in Indonesia re Sultan’s proposals that his dauughter succeeds him.

    The sultan’s brothers and sisters are not going along with it. They are outraged and most of them, like GBPH Prabukusumo, are now refusing to speak with the Sultan or attend royal events.
    “We are an Islamic royal family and the title is for a man. What would we call her the
     sultante? It’s impossible,” he laughs.
    He says the move is a dangerous break with hundreds of years of tradition and accused his brother’s family of being power hungry and greedy.
    And he sends a strong warning about what will happen.

    The ENCJ, which represents the EU members’ law courts, has slammed Poland and Hungary for altering its judicial system, which the EU criticized as harmful for democracy. The new ENCJ head, Kees Sterk from the Netherlands, has claimed that events in Poland and Hungary have reached a systematic level. The official has expressed alarm that other bloc members could follow their example.

    “The disease of Poland and Hungary could spread. It could spread to the neighboring countries. Who says that it won’t spread to other parts of Europe?” the official stated.

    The European Networks of Councils for the Judiciary is looking into the status of it members, who is representing Poland at the event. Hungary’s member has asked the body to interfere after the country’s government proposed a judicial reform.

      “Mississippi’s official state flag with the embedded Confederate battle flag is tantamount to hateful government speech that both has a discriminatory intent and disparate impact,” the six-page lawsuit declares. “The current official state flag … encourages or incites private citizens to commit acts of racial violence.”

      Mississippi is the only state that incorporates the Confederate battle flag into its state flag.

      The suit, filed against Gov. Dewey “Phil” Bryant (R), says the governor should be ordered by the court to remove the state flag from all government buildings. A spokesman for Bryant did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

      “Plaintiff fears for his safety and the safety of other African-Americans because of the state sanctioned hate speech communicated through the current flag,” the lawsuit states.

    “A Pakistani taxi driver in Switzerland accused of crimes including abduction has been given a short jail sentence for the rape and sexual assault of six passengers.
    In addition to the sexual assaults and rape, alleged to have taken place between

    February 2010 and March 2016, the defendant faced charges of multiple counts of attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH) at the trial on Wednesday, as he could have infected other people with HIV.

    The public prosecutor’s office said that on March 26th, 2016, the father-of-five picked up an 18-year-old Australian woman as a client in the early hours of the morning, the Luzerner Zeitung reports.

    Instead of driving her to the address she requested, the Pakistani stopped next to a small alleyway in Kriens and raped the teenager on the back seat of his cab, according to the indictment.

    “I did something that was sh**. But I did not use force, it just happened,” the 45-year-old said when questioned over the attack in court, where he spoke through an interpreter.

    Asked whether he raped the woman, the defendant told the judge: “The records say I did, but I say that I did not do it.”

    In addition to the Australian, who local media reports was visiting Switzerland on a language exchange trip, the taxi driver is also accused of sexually assaulting five other passengers, who were aged between 17 and 25 years.

    Lucerne Criminal Court heard how police were led to arrest the Pakistani after reports revealed a distinct pattern of behaviour in which he targeted intoxicated females and then groped them.

    In one instance he was driving two young women home from a ball. When one of them left the taxi, the defendant drove the woman’s friend to a secluded location rather than the address she had requested before pulling his victim’s underwear down and sexually assaulting her, the court heard.

    While the prosecution had requested a seven-year prison term for the accused, emphasising the seriousness of his crimes and his seeming lack of repentance, the judge sentenced him to just three years, six months of which would be unconditional.

    “Czech lawmakers have approved a government plan to increase the number of troops deployed in Afghanistan and other countries.

    The plan calls for the Czech Republic to deploy 390 soldiers in Afghanistan through 2020, up from the current 230, as part of the NATO-led Resolute Support mission that provides training, advice and assistance to local security forces.

    As many as 110 Czechs will serve in Iraq, including military training instructors, up from 49 at present. Some 120 soldiers will be dispatched to Africa’s Sahel region, including Mali, as part of a European Union force.

    Up to 385 Czechs will also serve in the Baltic states and Poland in NATO forces.

    Friday’s vote in the parliament’s lower house followed approval by its upper house, the Senate.”

    Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid says in a statement distributed to the media on Friday that Gen. John Nicholson’s remarks, made to reporters at the Pentagon from his Kabul office, were a “baseless claim.”

    Nicholson said Wednesday that “mid-level, senior-level Taliban leaders” are “engaging with Afghans,” adding that unspecified international organizations, foreign governments and other interested parties also are involved.

    Mujahid says that “American General Nicholson is making such fabricated statements to divert attention from his failures and keep the Washington media busy with false claims instead of exposing the failed Trump (administration’s) strategy” in Afghanistan.”

    “Malaysian police said Friday they have detained another 15 suspected militants, including several foreigners, for smuggling firearms and plotting attacks on places of worship.

    National police chief Mohamad Fuzi Harun said six Malaysians, six Filipinos, a Bangladeshi restaurant owner and a couple from a north African country were detained between March and May.

    Among the Malaysians was a 17-year-old student who made six Molotov cocktails he planned to use against entertainment outlets, churches and Hindu temples in Kuala Lumpur, Fuzi said. The student, a suspected Islamic State member, tested one of his devices in an open area and was detained in April, an hour after he produced a video on social media warning of the attacks, he said.

    The police chief said a 51-year-old Malaysian woman was held on May 9 during general elections for planning to ram a car into non-Muslims at a voting center. “In addition, the suspect also planned to drive into non-Muslim worship places using a car filled with gas cylinders as explosives,” he said.

    Fuzi’s statement said a 33-year-old Malaysian was detained after he was deported by Turkey for trying to slip into Syria to join the Islamic State. Two other Malaysians had planned to kidnap and kill police officers and also attack places of worship, it said.

    Fuzi said the African couple, both in their early 20s and suspected of having IS ties, were detained in April and since have been deported. Their specific home country wasn’t disclosed.

    The 41-year-old Bangladeshi was believed to be involved in smuggling weapons for terrorists.

    Another Malaysian and six Filipinos, aged between 22 and 49, were held in April in Sabah state on Borneo island for being part of a militant cell collecting firearms to wage “jihad” in Marawi city in the Philippines, he said. Marawi was the scene of a six-month militant siege last year.

    Hundreds of people suspected of having ties to the Islamic State have been detained in Malaysia in the past few years.”

  10. Like Roseanne, all Americans are just one bad tweet away from being fired

    If you use Twitter, you too are a public figure. And one egregious tweet could blow up your life.

    On Tuesday, ABC DIS, -0.51% cancelled the wildly successful reboot of “Roseanne” after Roseanne Barr wrote a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser in Barack Obama’s White House. Barr apologized, but the damage was done. Several members of her cast and ABC executives denounced her.

    The cancelation of Barr’s show came some 11 hours after she sent the original tweet. “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, who is black, said in a statement. ICM Partners talent agency also dropped Barr.

  11. Lions, tigers, jaguar on the loose at German zoo; bear shot dead

    BERLIN — Police killed a bear and were searching for two lions, two tigers and a jaguar that broke out of their cages in a zoo in western Germany on Friday. Police in nearby Trier told The Associated Press that all of the escaped animals were believed to still be on the grounds of the zoo in the town of Luenebach, near the border with Luxembourg and Belgium, but that area residents were being warned to stay indoors until they could be sure.

    Local broadcaster SWR had initially reported that lions and pumas had broken out of the Eifel Zoo, but police were able to determine that the missing animals were two lions, two tigers and a jaguar, the dpa news agency reported. A bear was shot dead, Sky News reported.

    The zoo did not pick up its phone and police did not have any further details about the developing situation.

    It was not clear how the animals escaped nor exactly when they got out.

    The escape came two years after another similar case in eastern Germany, when two lions broke out of their cages at the Leipzig zoo, the AFP reported.

  12. Tommy Robinson Drew Attention to ‘Grooming Gangs.’ Britain Has Persecuted Him.

    Tommy Robinson is a British political activist and “citizen journalist” who came to prominence in Britain almost a decade ago when he founded the English Defence League. The EDL was a street-protest movement in Britain whose aims could probably best be summarized as “anti-Islamization.” It emerged in the town of Luton after a group of local Islamists barracked the homecoming parade of a local regiment returning from service in Afghanistan.

    From their earliest protests the EDL’s members sought to highlight issues including sharia law, Islam’s attitudes toward minorities, and the phenomenon that would become euphemistically known as “grooming gangs.” In reality these protests often descended into hooliganism and low-level violence (naturally helped along by self-described “anti-fascists”). The authorities did everything they could to stop the EDL, and the media did everything possible to demonize them. In a foretaste of things to come, very few people made any effort to understand them. And nobody paid any price for (indeed many people benefited from) claiming that the EDL was simply a fascist organization and that anybody who even tried to understand them must be a fascist too. The usual prohibition against sweeping generalizations doesn’t seem to apply if the generalization tilts in that direction.

    This is the terrifying moment a cyclist pulled an enormous ‘zombie-killer’ knife on a driver in broad daylight in south London.

    The terrifying dashcam footage shows a blue Volkswagen drive out into London Road, Croydon, forcing a cyclist to swerve to avoid being hit.

    With the car stuck in a line of traffic and unable to move, the enraged cyclist pulls a massive blade out and launches a frenzied attack.

  14. The Mexican Mafia’s Iron Grip on California’s Jails

    To the jailers of California, the Mexican Mafia is known as the gang of gangs.

    Any member of a Latino street gang sent to prison or jail in California likely has to abide by the rules and dictates of the gang while in prison.

    Even to the point of making peace with their long-time hated rivals.

    “They have the ability to turn gangs that are historically sworn enemies that fight on the streets into allies when they come inside our jail system,” said Commander Joseph Dempsey of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

    Author and former Los Angeles Times reporter Sam Quinones has chronicled the Mexican Mafia and associated Latino street gangs of California for two decades. Quinones says the gang’s power extended as its 30-year reputation for viciousness in the jail system won the allegiance of Latino street gangs throughout Southern California.

  15. Educational decline: Homeschooling surges as parents seek safer option for children

    After a gunman opened fire on students in Parkland, Florida, the phones started ringing at the Texas Home School Coalition, and they haven’t stopped yet.

    The Lubbock-based organization has been swamped with inquiries for months from parents seeking safer options for their kids in the aftermath of this year’s deadly school massacres, first in Parkland and then in Santa Fe, Texas.

    “When the Parkland shooting happened, our phone calls and emails exploded,” said coalition president Tim Lambert. “In the last couple of months, our numbers have doubled. We’re dealing with probably between 1,200 and 1,400 calls and emails per month, and prior to that it was 600 to 700.”

    Demands to restrict firearms and beef up school security have dominated the debate following the shootings, but flying under the radar is the surge of interest in homeschooling as parents lose faith in the ability of public schools to protect students from harm.

    And it’s not just the threat of school shootings. Christopher Chin, president of Homeschool Louisiana, said parents are also increasingly concerned about “the violence, the bullying, the unsafe environments.”

    “One of the things we’ve seen definitely an uptick in the last five years is the aspect of violence. It’s the bullying. That is off the charts,” Mr. Chin said.

    In his experience, a mass shooting won’t change the minds of parents satisfied with their children’s public-school experiences, but it can tip the balance for those already leaning toward home education.

    “I think what happens with these school shootings is they’re the straws that broke the camel’s back,” Mr. Chin said. “I don’t think it’s the major decision-maker, but it’s in the back of parents’ minds.”

    Brian D. Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute in Salem, Oregon, who has conducted homeschool research for 33 years, said school safety has increasingly become an issue for parents looking at teaching their kids at home.

    He said the top three reasons that parents choose homeschooling are a desire to provide religious instruction or different values than those offered in public schools; dissatisfaction with the academic curriculum, and worries about the school environment.

    “Most parents homeschool for more than one reason,” Mr. Ray said. “But when we ask families why do they homeschool, near the top nowadays is concern about the environment of schools, and that includes safety, pressure to get into drugs, pressure to get into sexual activity. It includes all of that.”

    After the Feb. 14 shooting in Parkland, Florida, vows by parents to pull their kids out of school erupted on social media, and some of them apparently followed through by making contact with their local homeschool advocates.

    “I talk with these people on a regular basis, and clearly after a shooting, more of them are saying, ‘Hey, we’re getting more phone calls, we’ve got more people at the beginner session asking about safety,’” Mr. Ray said.

    Not everyone agrees with the homeschool response. Takisha Coats Durm, lead virtual school teacher for the Madison County Schools System in Huntsville, Alabama, said that fleeing the classroom teaches the wrong lesson.

    “Even though it seems we may be protecting them, we may be sheltering them instead of teaching them to work and find a solution for the issues and not necessarily running away from them, because these things are going to happen,” Ms. Durm told WAAY-TV in Huntsville.

    Her comments came shortly after the May 18 shooting at Santa Fe High School, which left 10 dead, just three months after 17 were killed in the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

    Tracking the numbers

    While homeschool advocates are confident their ranks are growing, pinning down the number of U.S. at-home students is a challenge, given most states don’t keep count.

    A 2017 U.S. Department of Education report estimated 1.69 million homeschool students from ages 5-17 in spring 2016, using data from the National Household Education Surveys program, which mailed questionnaires to about 200,000 selected households.

    Those findings would indicate that homeschooling has been flat since 2012, but Mr. Ray estimated there were 2.3 million homeschool students in spring 2016, using figures provided by the 15 states that track homeschoolers, as well as Maricopa County, Arizona.

    His figure represented a 25 percent increase between 2012-16. During the same period, the U.S. school-age population grew by about 2 percent.

    “My bottom-line summary is that it’s been growing at an estimated 2 to 8 percent per year, and that’s compounded,” Mr. Ray said.

    In Louisiana, which does ask homeschoolers to report their kids, Mr. Chin said there were 30,134 homeschool students registered in January, up from an estimated 18,500 to 20,000 in 2011.

    “Homeschooling has exploded in our state,” said Mr. Chin, who homeschools his five children with his wife in New Orleans. “If homeschoolers were their own school district in our state, we would be the sixth largest in the state.”

    Texas doesn’t require registration, but Mr. Lambert, who homeschooled his four now-adult children, estimated that the state has about 150,000 families and more than 300,000 students being taught at home.

    “In fact we have more students being homeschooled in Texas than we have in traditional private schools in Texas, and that’s quoted by a number of our state officials,” he said.

    His organization sponsored a poll last year that found safety ranked fourth among reasons parents decide to educate their kids at home.

    “I’m required by law to place my kids in a public school or private or homeschool, but the state is not accountable in terms of the safety of these children,” said Mr. Lambert. “So we get lots of calls from people saying, ‘Hey my kid’s being bullied, my kid’s being attacked, and the school either can’t or won’t do anything about it, so we’re going to take care of our child. We’re withdrawing him.’”

    Like Mr. Chin, he said a highly publicized school shooting may come as the tipping point for parents already inclined to pull their kids out of the public system.

    “When a shooting happens, I call it the straw that basically breaks their idea of the public schools,” Mr. Lambert said. “They’ve already been thinking about it, and now somebody gets stabbed, or another teacher beats up another kid, or another kid beats up another teacher, and they say, ‘You know what? We don’t want to be there.’”

    • While I can agree with the poverty of teaching quality in many schools and actually like home schooling, I can see that introverted children will just make a bigger mess when they enter the world as adults as they will still be exposed to bullying and have absolutely no defences against it. At least at school they learn to cope. My brother a pacifist like me (then) was bullied mercilessly until 14 when he finally decided that appeasing scum was pointless as they never stopped and he decided to show his Krav Maga training. It worked far better than appeasement.

    HONG KONG – Shrouded in Chinese military secrecy and hidden from the eyes of journalists, Beijing’s build-up of man-made islands on reefs deep in the maritime heart of Southeast Asia is a vexing story to report.

    Reuters deputy head of graphics Simon Scarr, based in Singapore, had previously dealt with private sector satellite imagery providers but always felt more could be done within the highly competitive field.

    Late last year in a conversation with Earthrise Media, an independent group helping journalists obtain and analyze satellite data, Scarr wondered if it would be possible to count buildings on China’s seven man-made islands in the Spratly archipelago of the hotly contested South China Sea.

    During a six-week period, Earthrise digitally scrutinized hundreds of images dating back to 2014 when China started rapidly building up those islands. Reuters journalists checked the data with a range of military and academic contacts.

    On a spread sheet of figures confirming extensive construction across the South China Sea, one number stood out – Subi reef was home to nearly 400 buildings, more than expected and nearly double the number on similar islands.

    By now, everyone has heard of Roseanne Barr’s offensive tweet about Valerie Jarrett. I’m pretty sure everyone understands Barr wasn’t likening Jarrett to “Planet of the Apes” in a good way.

    Barr has apologized, with apparent sincerity. But ABC has canceled her wildly successful TV show – just as apparently, because ABC and Disney were waiting for a pretext to cancel a product their executives find politically distasteful.

    The distaste was about Roseanne showing a certain level of support for President Trump (if by no means sycophantic or full-throated support, from what I could tell), as the outsize political phenomenon he undoubtedly is.

    Meanwhile, equally offensive comments by other celebrities, about political figures on the right (or, more specifically, figures associated with Trump), have no such consequences.

    “I would just say that the United States military’s had a lot of experience in the Western Pacific taking down small islands,” Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, director of the Joint Staff, told reporters, according to Voice of America. “It’s just a fact.”

    “We have a lot of experience in the second World War taking down small islands that are isolated. So, that’s a core competency of the US military,” he added, noting that people “shouldn’t read anything more into that than a simple statement of historical fact.”

    Tensions between the U.S. and China have been building in the South China Sea in recent weeks.

  20. Hungary aims to criminalize aiding illegal migration in ‘Stop Soros’ bill

    BUDAPEST (Reuters) – Individuals or groups who help migrants not entitled to protection to submit requests for asylum or who help illegal migrants gain status to stay in Hungary will be liable to jail under legislation submitted to parliament on Tuesday.

    Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government has also proposed amending the constitution to state that an “alien population” cannot be settled in Hungary, rejecting European Union quotas to distribute migrants around the bloc.

    In power since 2010, the right-wing nationalist Orban has tightened state control over the media and campaigned on a platform of fierce hostility to immigration – policies that have put him in conflict with the European Union, which funds development policies to the tune of billions of euros a year.

    The new bill also says that foreigners who sought to enter Hungary via a third country in which they were not directly exposed to persecution would not be entitled to asylum.

    The draft legislation, which was immediately condemned by the U.N. refugee agency, is part of Orban’s campaign against EU migration policies and against George Soros, a Hungarian-born U.S. financier known for funding liberal causes.

    The legislation comes only weeks after Orban was re-elected by a landslide, and shows a hardening of his stance just as crucial talks begin about the EU’s next budget which proposes spending cuts in ex-communist countries of central Europe.

    The text of the legislation, known as the “Stop Soros” bill and posted on parliament’s website, said: “Those who provide financial means … or conduct this organizational activity (for illegal immigration) on a regular basis will be punishable with up to one year in prison.”

    “We need an action plan to defend Hungary and this is the STOP Soros package of bills,” the interior ministry said in a comment accompanying the legislation.

    It said there were international and also Hungarian organizations helping the entry of illegal migrants to Hungary, adding: “Sanctioning these is justified.” It did not name any groups.

    The government has said the bill intends to deter illegal immigration Orban says is eroding European stability, and risks undermining Hungary’s Christian culture.

    While more than one million mainly Muslim migrants have entered the EU since 2015, few have sought to settle in Hungary. Official data show that in 2017 a total of 1,291 migrants obtained some form of international protection in Hungary, mostly Afghans, Syrians and Iraqis recognized as refugees.

    The U.N. refugee agency UNHCR urged Hungary to scrap the draft law restricting non-governmental organizations, saying it would deprive refugees and asylum-seekers of vital services and encourage “rising xenophobic attitudes”.

    “UNHCR is seriously concerned that these proposals, if passed, would deprive people who are forced to flee their homes of critical aid and services, and further inflame tense public discourse and rising xenophobic attitudes,” the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said in a statement in Geneva.

    FIERCE CAMPAIGN
    The new “Stop Soros” bill no longer contains a 25 percent tax that its previous version in February wanted to impose on foreign donations to non-governmental organizations that back migration.

    But the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, which provides legal aid to asylum-seekers, said the bill was still “unacceptable in a democratic state” and against European democratic values.

    “The government threatens those who stand up for human rights with the criminal code,” the committee said in a statement, stressing that its activities were all lawful.

    Soros was publicly vilified during Orban’s campaign for April elections. Orban’s anti-immigration stance is particularly popular with voters in conservative rural Hungary.

    Orban has accused Soros and the NGOs funding him of plotting to undermine Hungary’s Christian character by flooding it with immigrants, an allegation Soros has repeatedly denied.

    The proposed constitutional amendment submitted on Tuesday would also provide a legal basis for the establishment of new administrative courts and a high court to deal with lawsuits concerning the public sector, flagged by the justice minister earlier this month.

    abrina wind from Eschede is desperate. Together with her ten-year-old daughter, she lives in an apartment building on Rebberlaher Strasse. The small family felt comfortable – until in October 2016 Sudanese asylum seeker Muhsin (name changed) moved into the neighbouring house and changed everything. Several refugees are accommodated in the residential building of the municipality of Eschede, but Muhsin stands out among the peaceful and well-integrated new citizens through his aggressive behaviour.

    Drunk, the Sudanese is said to regularly threaten not only Sabrina Wind, but also other residents such as Marleen Beister, Michael Besoke and Winds landlady Babet Felsmann. He is also said to have harassed the employees several times in the Escheder Edeka store. In the parking lot of the market, Muhsin is said to have laid down on the floor with an imaginary machine gun and “shot” passers-by. The list of incidents and police missions is long, the community has documented everything meticulously.

    The residents are scared. Wind is particularly concerned about her little daughter. “She doesn’t dare to pass him anymore,” says Wind and means Muhsin. This also applied to numerous school children who crossed Rebberlaher Straße every day. Wind suffers greatly from the situation, and in the meantime she has been diagnosed with sleep disorders.

    However, there is no medical explanation for Muhsin’s behavior. The residents suspect that he suffers from a post-traumatic stress disorder due to war experiences. It is noticeable that the Sudanese only rampage in an alcoholic state. “He’s not dangerous when sober,” says Besoke. The Escheder, who has also been involved in the “Initiative Together” in the past, emphasises that the residents generally welcome refugees. However, Muhsin is dangerous and needs help. “You can’t leave him to himself,” says Besoke.

    Wind has already talked to the community several times, but the administration is also overwhelmed with the aggressive asylum seeker. “We feel left alone,” says Eschede’s mayor Günter Berg. The community has already set some levers in motion to defuse the situation. For example, the municipality has applied for a counselor for Muhsin, but the district court has not yet decided on this.

    Berg also contacted District Administrator Klaus Wiswe. Wiswe again contacted the Ministry of the Interior of Lower Saxony with the request to transfer Muhsin to a state recording institution. “An answer is not yet available”, Marcus Carteuser from the district of Celle announced. The Ministry of the Interior considers the district to be obliged to “take appropriate measures”, as it says on CZ request. Muhsin’s application for asylum is now to be processed by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) as a matter of priority.

    It remains unclear what a solution to the situation in Eschede might look like. The competent authorities reject the responsibility. The fact is that a compulsory therapy for Muhsin cannot be ordered, according to the district. Charles Sievers (FDP), member of the district council, is following the case closely and insists on help for Muhsin. “We owe him that because we took him in,” says Sievers.

    Who would have believed that within certain communities, there could be more supporters of the radical Arab Palestinian agenda than supporters of the free, democratic and altruistic State of Israel. The relentless Arab Palestinian deceitful and well-organized propaganda, with the irrational support of many in the Western Media, may be a part of this transition.

    The Democratic Party in the USA used to be a staunch supporter of the just cause of the State of Israel, but a recent Pew Research Center report showed a dangerous shift in this attitude. Within the more radical liberal branch of the Democratic party, about 38% will be anti-Israeli while the supporters of Israel will be only about 26%. When you look at the overall numbers as they relate to the Democratic party, you find that about 31% will be anti-Israeli and only 33% will be pro-Israel. On the other hand, within the Republican party, about 74% will be pro-Israel.

    If one wants to know what the intentions of the Radical Palestinians, Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran are, one should just listen to them. They are not bashful.

    Despite an absolute bipartisan support for moving the USA Embassy to the legitimate Capital City of Israel, Jerusalem, there were no Democratic members of Congress in attendance at the opening ceremony of the US Embassy in Jerusalem. Even more surprisingly, Chuck Schumer, who voted in Congress against the Iran Deal, criticized President Trump bitterly for exposing the bad intentions and the lies of the Iranians, and for withdrawing from the originally ill-conceived Iranian Deal, implemented by President Obama via an executive order, without the ratification by Congress.

    Norway has the world’s sixth highest GDP per capita. Or maybe the eighth. Its rank varies according to whether you’re listening to the IMF, the CIA, or the World Bank. Depending on whose list you go by, it’s bested by somewhere between three and five tax havens (Luxembourg, Switzerland, Monaco, Singapore, and Ireland) and two or three small oil-rich countries (Qatar, Brunei, the UAE). As with the latter nations, Norway’s rank on these list is artificially inflated by its massive petroleum income, which is pumped out of the North Sea and poured directly into the planet’s largest sovereign wealth fund. The cash in this fund theoretically belongs to the Norwegian people, but they have no access to it, and no well-traveled outside observer exposed to the everyday lives of average subjects in King Harald’s realm would ever imagine that this is, on paper, one of the very richest populations on earth.

    No, they’re certainly not poor. But one day the oil will run out. And, soon enough, if they have to start drawing on it, the oil fund will disappear. Then what? Well, by then the country may well be an Islamic monarchy and solving that problem will be the job of the new emir. In the meantime, however, the Norwegian economy is increasingly burdened by welfare-state outlays to immigrants (overwhelmingly Muslim) and their children. You might think a government drowning in oil profits would take advantage of that boon to lighten the burden on entrepreneurs and thus encourage the development of new business sectors. Instead, Norway does pretty much everything it can to make life extremely tough for potential start-ups.
