  1. Crosses must be mounted in all state buildings, Bavaria orders (thelocal, Apr 25, 2018)
    https://www.thelocal.de/20180425/crosses-to-be-mandatory-in-all-public-offices-in-bavaria

“Bavarian PM Markus Söder has announced that crosses must hang in all the state’s government buildings, saying the move is a “commitment to Bavarian identity and culture.”

Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder implemented his first government declaration in state parliament on Tuesday by saying that crosses are to be mandatory in all public offices in the southern state.

The crosses, which are to hang in the entrance area of all state administration buildings, are said by the Christian Social Union (CSU) politician to have an explicit symbolic value.

Söder asserted at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday that these should not be a religious symbol of Christianity, but rather a “commitment to Bavarian identity” and “cultural imprint”.

“The cross is not a sign of religion,” he said after the cabinet meeting. “This is not a violation of the principle of neutrality.”

The new regulation was approved by the cabinet, allowing the new cross mandate to take effect by June 1st. The ordinance applies exclusively to the offices of the state of Bavaria, and not to federal government or municipality offices in the region.

Alternative for Germany (AfD) officials reportedly welcomed the announcement, while other parties voiced their concern about the CSU’s religious policies ahead of state elections in six months’ time.

“Instead of nailing crucifixes to the walls of the authorities, it would do more justice to Christian responsibility to show mercy and charity in everyday political life,” said Bavaria’s state chair Sigi Hagl of the Green party.

The chairman of Die Linke, Bernd Riexinger, reacted similarly: “Instead of imposing a cross on every authority, the CSU should rather return to Christian values such as charity.”

Free Democrat (FDP) leader Christian Lindner said: “The way Markus Söder and the CSU permanently instrumentalize religions for party politics is reminiscent of (Turkish President) Erdogan. The Basic Law has no denomination!”

Söder immediately hung a cross in the entrance area of ??the Bavarian State Chancellery after the Tuesday meeting, emphasizing that the symbol should be seen as an expression of elemental values ??such as charity, human dignity and tolerance.

But the actual cross which was put up by the Minister-President does have a religious background. It hung in the Cabinet Room until 2008, was a gift from the former Munich Cardinal Friedrich Wetter and, according to Söder, was also consecrated by the religious figure.

In 2016, almost nine million of the approximately 12.8 million people living in Bavaria were members of a church – the proportion is significantly higher than in other federal states. The south German state is one of the most Catholic regions regions in the country.”

  2. German jails are at maximum capacity nationwide: report (thelocal, Apr 25, 2018)
    https://www.thelocal.de/20180425/german-jails-max-capacity

“Prisons across all German states are seriously overcrowded, according to a media report. In some states, attacks on prison guards have also increased.

According to a report published by Funke Media Group newspapers on Wednesday, there is a growing shortage of space in Germany’s prisons, with jails in most states having already reached full capacity.

A survey conducted by the Funke Media Group with the Ministries of Justice across all federal states showed a utilization rate in prisons as high as 100 percent, as was the case in Baden-Württemberg.

In other states like Bavaria, Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg and Rhineland-Palatinate, capacity utilization in jails averaged well over 90 percent for 2017.

According to prison experts cited in the report, “full occupancy” is defined as the point when a jail’s occupancy rate is at 85 to 90 percent. This puts most German jails in 2017 at or over full capacity.

In addition to a growing space problem within Germany’s jails, several states have also reported an increase in the number of attacks on prison personnel.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, the number of assaults more than doubled from 34 to 72 between 2016 and 2017. In Bavaria, however, the number has dropped from 65 to 50.

According to the media report, prisoners identifying as Islamists are of particular concern to the prison system.

Ministry officials reported that the number of “Islamist prisoners” in Hesse, for example, has more than tripled since 2013.

The chairman of the German Federation of Prison Employees, René Müller, told the Funke newspapers that the prison system in Germany is currently completely overloaded.

Union faction leader Volker Kauder (CDU) called for improvements to the conditions in German prisons. “The penal system must not be neglected any further,” Kauder said.”

  3. EU in migrant row as Brussels pushes plans to force children to be FINGER PRINTED (express, Apr 25, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/951081/eu-migrants-children-fingerprints-european-union-fingerprint-database-asylum-seekers

“THE EU is floating plans which would allow police to force migrant children to have their fingerprints taken, prompting concern from MEPs who believe youngsters could end up traumatised a result.

The European Commission is proposing reforms to the Eurodac system, a fingerprint database for asylum seekers outside the EU.

These regulations would permit the authorities to forcibly obtain prints from minors over the age of 14 for the purposes of identification.

In addition, new rules would mean children as young as six could have their prints taken, providing they agree to it.

Defenders of the proposal say the taking of fingerprints can help to reunite migrant families who have been separated after arriving in the EU, as well as tracing children being held by criminal gangs.

But critics are concerned about the impact of being forced to comply could have on the children.

The EU have been discussing the proposal since September 2017, with the latest round of talks taking place today.

The subject of how to deal with the large number of migrants arriving in EU countries in 2015, when more then a million people arrived in the continent, has been the subject of fierce debate ever since.

Europol figures from 2016 suggest that 10,000 unaccompanied refugee children went missing in Europe over the previous two years, and the fingerprinting measures are partly in response to this…”

  4. Hatred of journalists on the rise worldwide, watchdog says

PARIS (AP) — Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders says hostility toward journalists is growing worldwide, often encouraged by political leaders — even in democratic countries.

The group’s annual global index of media freedom released Wednesday found an overall rise in animosity toward reporters and a drop in freedoms, notably in former Soviet states but also in countries from the U.S. to the Philippines.

The group says many democratically elected leaders “no longer see the media as part of democracy’s essential underpinning,” singling out U.S. President Donald Trump for his media-bashing. It also notes the recent killings of reporters in EU members Slovakia and Malta.

The watchdog says authoritarian regimes are trying to “export their vision” that media should be compliant.

It says hate speech targeting journalists is amplified on social networks by government-friendly trolls in India, Russia and elsewhere.

    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/04/25/number-swedes-wanting-fewer-asylum-seekers-doubles/

“The number of Swedes who want to see far fewer asylum seekers enter the country has doubled since 2015 to nearly half of the voting population.

A poll conducted by Ipsos found that the general Swedish attitude toward taking in large numbers of asylum seekers had radically changed since the height of the 2015 migrant crisis when only two out of ten people were for reducing the number, Dagens Nyheter reports.

“This is a dramatic change, not least because it has been so fast,” said professor of Political Science Marie Demker who teaches at the University of Gothenburg…”

  6. One in Three North Africans Want to Migrate Permanently, Number Rising (breitbart, Apr 24, 2018?
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/04/24/one-three-north-africans-looking-migrate-number-rising/

“The proportion of North Africans who want to permanently migrate has reached a record high, with almost half of young people wanting to move country if they get the chance.

Just under one in three (32 per cent) of 5,030 North African respondents to the Gallup World poll for 2017 said they would like to move abroad — a figure up from 28 per cent the previous year.

The desire to migrate was found to be strongest among younger North Africans, with the proportion of 15- to 29-year-olds jumping from 40 per cent in 2016 to 46 per cent the following year.

Almost a third (30 per cent) of people in the 30 to 49 age bracket said they would like to permanently migrate, rising from 24 per cent of those interviewed in 2016 by the pollster, which surveyed people living in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia…”

  7. Rights Watchdog Warns Voter I.D. Plans Discriminatory to Trans People, Minorities (breitbart, Apr 25, 2018)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/04/25/rights-watchdog-warns-voter-id-laws-discriminatory-trans-people-minorities/

“The government has been told it should scrap plans to crack down on election fraud because requiring voters to show ID at the polling station could “disenfranchise” transgender people and other minority groups in Britain.

Rules set to be trialled across Watford, Bromley, Gosport, Swindon, and Woking at local elections in May, with a view to rolling them out countrywide to combat fraud, will see voters required to bring identification documents such as a driver’s licence if they do not bring their polling card.

But the move is likely to hit “voters with protected characteristics”, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) warned, expressing concern that the precaution against election fraud could result in fewer votes from transgender individuals and non-whites.

In a letter reportedly leaked to the Observer, EHRC legal officer Claire Collier told the government that staff were “concerned” that “some voters will be disenfranchised as a result of restrictive identification requirement”.

“The requirement to produce identification at the given local elections will have a disproportionate impact on voters with protected characteristics, particularly older people, transgender people, people with disabilities and/or those from ethnic minority communities,” said the letter, which was sent to Cabinet Office minister David Lidington.

According to the public body, such groups would be less likely to have identification and so would effectively be prevented from voting under the new system, despite the pilot requiring ID only if an individual fails to bring their polling card when they show up to vote.

In addition to the ECHR, which was ahead of its time regarding gender ideology when it recommended in 2010 that schools ditch skirts so as not to trigger “dysphoria” amongst female pupils who “identify” as boys, more than 40 other NGOs have called for the new rules to be scrapped.

Ruth Hunt, who heads gay rights group Stonewall, echoed the EHRC’s claim that access to photo ID “can prove very difficult” for minority groups and added that the government’s crackdown on voter fraud would likely pose additional challenges to transgender people or those who claim to be neither male nor female.

“For trans and non-binary people in particular this has the potential to cause significant problems, as some may not have photo identification that accurately reflects their gender identity. It’s not hard to imagine the challenges and confusion that could result from that in a polling station,” she said…”

  8. BBC POLL: Europe Most Socially Divided World Region, Due to Migration (breitbart, Apr 25, 2018)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/04/25/bbc-poll-europe-socially-divided-world-region-due-migration/

“A greater proportion of people in Europe believe their society is divided than people in any other world region, with immigration being the largest source of division in many countries, a study has found.

Half of the respondents in the UK said differences between immigrants and Brits was a source of social tension, followed by differences of religion (47 per cent), ethnicity (41 per cent), and political views (40 per cent).

Italians said they were the most divided by immigration (61 per cent), followed by the UK, Sweden (49 per cent), Germany (46 per cent), France (45 per cent), and Canada (40 per cent).

However, in the online Ipsos Mori poll of 27 countries for the BBC, it was politics that emerged as the main cause of division globally, identified by 44 per cent of the 19,428 respondents…”

    • Well, progressives and lib-types like diversity, some root words for which include division, difference and separateness, instead of unity and fraternity. My daughter is moving from an neighbourhood with a significant Muslim segment, not because they are necessarily bad people, but because they keep themselves separate and apart instead of becoming part of the community. They don’t really like us, but I guess that’s a two-way street for a number of reasons.

It predicted that the impact could be up to 45 per cent less intense than is widely accepted.

But the study emerged as other scientists said winter waves pounding the Scottish and Irish coasts have grown grow by up to 5ft 6in (1.7metres) over the past 70 years.

Rising sea levels and more intense storms are in line with global warming forecasts.

The study questioning the future intensity of climate change was carried out by American climatologist Judith Curry and UK mathematician Nick Lewis.

It is based on analysing the warming effect of greenhouse gases and other drivers of climate change, from the mid 19th century until 2016.

It forecast that future warming will be between 30 per cent and 45 per cent lower than suggested by simulations carried out by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel one Climate Change.

  11. Mock Shooting Alarms Crowd, Triggers Police Response At Movie Theater In CT

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – The sound of gunfire and someone shouting “Everybody down, everybody” shocked moviegoers sitting in the lobby of the Bow Tie Majestic 6 movie theaters Sunday night, but the incident appears to have been a juvenile prank.

Five children ranging in ages from 10 to 16 were arrested and face both criminal charges and potential school disciplinary action after police say they used toy cap guns to stage the mock attack in Stamford, reports CBS2’s Tony Aiello.

Police say three members of the group had noisy toy guns and fired them in the theater while shouting “everyone down” before fleeing the theater.

  12. China Assigns Every Citizen A ‘Social Credit Score’ To Identify Who Is And Isn’t Trustworthy
Country Determines Your Standing Through Use Of Surveillance Video, Plans To Have 600 Million Cameras By 2020

    http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2018/04/24/china-assigns-every-citizen-a-social-credit-score-to-identify-who-is-and-isnt-trustworthy/

BEIJING (CBSNewYork) — China is rolling out a high-tech plan to give all of its 1.4 billion citizens a personal score, based on how they behave.

But there are consequences if a score gets too low, and for some that’s cause for concern, CBS2’s Ben Tracy reported Tuesday.

When Liu Hu recently tried to book a flight, he was told he was banned from flying because he was on the list of untrustworthy people. Liu is a journalist who was ordered by a court to apologize for a series of tweets he wrote and was then told his apology was insincere.

“I can’t buy property. My child can’t go to a private school,” he said. “You feel you’re being controlled by the list all the time.”

And the list is now getting longer as every Chinese citizen is being assigned a social credit score — a fluctuating rating based on a range of behaviors. It’s believed that community service and buying Chinese-made products can raise your score. Fraud, tax evasion and smoking in non-smoking areas can drop it.

  13. Richard: By turning down refugee status in Mexico they have (under US law) lost the right to claim refugee status in the US. Not that the open borders advocates care about what US law says.

The Central American Caravan That Angered Trump Has Reached The US Border

The arrival of the group, made up primarily of Central Americans, sets up a confrontation over US asylum laws.

A migrant caravan that began its journey through Mexico a month ago has reached the US border, where its arrival will set up a confrontation between the Trump administration’s anti-immigration policies and US laws that require the United States to grant asylum to people with valid persecution claims.

A group of about 130 women and children arrived Tuesday afternoon in Mexicali, on the Mexican side of the US border, after an overnight bus trip from Hermosillo, in Mexico’s Sonora state. They were expected to be followed by as many as 500 other migrants late Tuesday and Wednesday.

While media attention to the caravan has dropped in recent weeks, the Trump administration has been keeping a watchful eye on the caravan’s progress. Kirstjen Nielsen, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said Monday that her agency was monitoring “the remnants” of the caravan.

“If members of the ‘caravan’ enter the country illegally, they will be referred for prosecution for illegal entry in accordance with existing law,” Nielsen said in a statement. “For those seeking asylum, all individuals may be detained while their claims are adjudicated efficiently and expeditiously, and those found not to have a claim will be promptly removed from the United States.”

  14. MS-13 member tries to sneak into U.S. as illegal immigrant child

An MS-13 gang member tried to sneak into the U.S. last week by posing as an Unaccompanied Alien Child (UAC), the Border Patrol said Tuesday, hoping to take advantage of lax American laws that give UAC a quick foothold in the U.S.

Agents said Herbeth Geovani Argueta-Chavez was part of a group of 61 illegal immigrants nabbed as a group in Arizona.

“During initial interviews, he falsely claimed to be an unaccompanied juvenile in hopes of being released,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

Agents continued to press Mr. Argueta-Chavez, who then admitted he was actually an adult, not a minor. He also admitted he was part of MS-13 — though he claimed he was trying to leave the gang.

CBP said Mr. Argueta-Chavez, 18, is from El Salvador.

UAC from El Salvador and other Central American countries are given special treatment compared to Mexicans. Under the law, court decisions and government policy, they are required to be processed and quickly released to social workers, who then try to connect them with sponsors who will take them here in the U.S. — despite their unauthorized status.

They are supposed to show up for deportation cases, but most do not, instead disappearing into the shadows.

UAC have created a new pool of recruits for Mara Salvatrucha-13, the violent gang better known as MS-13, here in the U.S.

But Mr. Argueta-Chavez’s case underscores another danger: gang members attempting to make bogus UAC claims to gain a foothold.

  15. Federal judge orders complete restart of DACA

Deepest blow yet to Trump’s phaseout

A federal judge delivered another blow to President Trump’s attempt to roll back the Obama-era DACA program, ruling Tuesday that last year’s revocation was illegal and the entire program could have to be restarted.

That goes beyond other judges, who had also ruled the phaseout illegal but had only ordered Homeland Security to accept renewal applications from people who’d already been awarded DACA before. Judge John D. Bates’s ruling would require a full restart, meaning even illegal immigrant “Dreamers” who’d never been approved before would now be able to apply for DACA.

The judge imposed a 90-day delay on his own ruling to give the government a chance to reargue its case, but for now the ruling stands as the most severe blow yet to Mr. Trump’s phaseout.

Judge Bates said the government never gave an adequate justification for revoking DACA, so its decision seemed “arbitrary and capricious” — which makes it illegal under the Administrative Procedures Act.

“The Department’s decision to rescind DACA was predicated primarily on its legal judgment that the program was unlawful. That legal judgment was virtually unexplained, however, and so it cannot support the agency’s decision,” he wrote in his 60-page ruling.

He added: “It was also arbitrary and capricious in its own right, and thus likewise cannot support the agency’s action. For these reasons, DACA’s rescission was unlawful and must be set aside.”

  16. Trump’s travel ban faces U.S. Supreme Court reckoning
By Lawrence Hurley and Andrew Chung
    •April 25, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s administration goes before the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday to defend the legality of his travel ban targeting people from several Muslim-majority countries, one of the most contentious actions of his presidency.

Trump’s travel ban – the third version of a policy he first sought to implement a week after taking office in January 2017 – blocks entry into the United States of most people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. Chad was on the list announced in September, but Trump removed it on April 10.

The conservative-majority, nine-member court has never heard arguments on the legal merits of the travel ban or any other major Trump immigration policy, including his move to rescind protections for young immigrants sometimes called Dreamers brought into the United States illegally as children.

It has previously acted on Trump requests to undo lower court orders blocking those two policies, siding with him on the travel ban and opposing him on the Dreamers.

A ruling is due by the end of June.

  18. British Politicians Declare War on Knives
Having failed to thwart crime with gun bans, British officials now want to restrict what may be the most useful tool ever invented.

It turns out that when you pass laws disarming people in an attempt to prevent violence, criminals who habitually disregard all laws don’t make exceptions for the new rules. In London, crime still thrives despite the U.K.’s tight gun controls and the British political class is now desperately turning its attention to restricting knives.

A flurry of recent headlines reveal that London now has a higher murder rate than New York City, a metropolis of nearly identical population and one long considered more vulnerable to crime. “London police investigated more murders than their New York counterparts did over the last two months,” Reuters reported earlier this month. “In the latest bloodshed, a 17-year-old girl died on Monday after she was found with gunshot wounds in Tottenham, north London, a day after a man was fatally stabbed in south London.”

  19. On pizza regulations, Trump slices differently than his own FDA commissioner

As the owner of 18 Domino’s stores in Texas, I do not cut corners, whether on pizzas or complying with the law. Unfortunately, on May 7 the law will become especially burdensome and unhelpful to my customers. That day, President Trump’s FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb will implement a nationwide, Obama-era menu-labeling rule requiring restaurants with 20 or more locations to post in-store menu boards listing the calories of every item sold.

I fully support efforts to ensure consumers have access to nutritional information, and my customers deserve accurate information delivered to them at the point of sale. I would not have lasted 36 years in this industry and succeeded as a Domino’s franchisee over the past 20 if I were working against the interests of my customers. At the same time, small business owners like me deserve a fair accounting of the rule’s costs. But the rule as codified by Gottlieb fails on both counts, and Trump must direct Gottlieb to fix the rule before it goes into effect.

  21. Judicial Watch: Obama State Dept. put Russian ambo at 2016 RNC. JW wants the records on that
    By J.E. Dyer April 25, 2018

This is one we can certainly get behind. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has come in for no end of grief from Democrats and the media for having had brief interactions with former Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July 2016. The interactions at the RNC have been routinely depicted as suspicious and in need of “investigation.” Indeed, they figured large in the call for Sessions to recuse himself from any decision-making role in the counterintelligence investigation of supposed Russian interference in the 2016 election.

But Judicial Watch points out that Kislyak was at the convention in Cleveland as part of a State Department program that brought him there.

  22. Mom speaks out on preschool’s decision to ‘dissuade’ students from using term ‘best friend’ (abcnews, Apr 25, 2018)
    http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Family/mom-speaks-preschools-decision-dissuade-students-term-best/story?id=54695395

“Is it bad to have a best friend?

One Massachusetts mother is speaking out after her child’s preschool issued a restriction on kids using the term.

Christine Hartwell told ABC News that in early March, her 4-year-old daughter Julia came home from Pentucket Workshop Preschool in Georgetown and informed her that the teacher told her that she is no longer allowed to use the term “best friend” at school.

Unaware that this was a new policy, Hartwell said that she spent several days reaching out to Julia’s school to find out what had ensued.

“I spoke to the assistant director and I said, ‘My daughter is very upset; before I address it with her, I need to know in the context of what happened, what was said and how did it happen,'” Hartwell recalled.

Hartwell said that the assistant director and the director of the preschool told her that Julia used the term “best friend” in a loving way, but that it can be “exclusive and hurt other children,” which is why they asked her to refrain from saying it again.

“I said, ‘Do you see [that with] this policy, this all-inclusive philosophy, my child was excluded?'” Hartwell said. “My child was shamed. My child was made to feel sad. My child was made to feel like she did something wrong.”

The preschool allegedly told Hartwell that Julia would be persuaded to not use the term “best friend” while she’s amongst a larger group of children. But Hartwell argued that her daughter is only 4 years old, and using the words “best friend” is something that she does often.

“She calls so many children on a daily basis her best friend,” Hartwell explained. “I’m her ‘best mom,’ There’s a ‘best teacher.’ This is developmentally appropriate langauge that children use. She’s 4. For many kids, their hearts are open.”

She went on, “I don’t want my daughter to think or feel that is a bad thing. We have been teaching her for four years to be inclusive, to be loving, to be kind. She’s so social. She’s going to say this again. I don’t understand how to ‘police it’ or how to ramify it to tell them to stop because this is what 4-year-olds do.”

Rachel Simmons, leadership development specialist at the Wurtele Center for Leadership at Smith College in Massachusetts and author of “Odd Girl Out,” said that you cannot make a child’s behavior change by making a word go away.

“It might have been easier for this school just to talk about what a good healthy best friend looks like instead of telling kids not do it at all,” Simmons said in a statement to ABC News. “By telling kids not say that word, it is probably going to make kids worry more about who their best friend is or isn’t or wanting to have one just so they can be part of something taboo.”

Simmons added, “What this school is doing … is misguided because it is focusing on a word and not the behavior. And it is in the behavior where our kids really have the potential to change.”

After speaking with school officials, Hartwell said she suggested having an open forum or a larger parent-teacher conference to discuss new rule of placing a ban on the term “best friend.”

Hartwell alleges that the school declined to participate or allow her to utilize the parent email list to organize such a meeting.

“If this is their philosophy, make it known, make it official and or have a discussion with parents,” Hartwell said. “Let them say their piece. You are dealing with their children.”

Pentucket Workshop Preschool declined ABC News’ request for a comment.

In a letter addressed to Hartwell, the school maintained its decision to “dissuade” children from using the term “best friend” at their facility. Hartwell shared the letter with ABC News.

“It has been our experience (which spans decades) that the use of the term ‘best friend’ even when used in a loving way, can lead other children to feel excluded. We feel that instead of encouraging children to have best friends, which can ultimately lead to the ormation of ‘cliques’ and ‘outsiders,’ it is much more developmentally helpful to encourage children to have a broader group of friends, and foster inclusion at this particular age. As part of our philosophy we do encourage the children to have a broad group of friends.”

Hartwell said she has since pulled her child out of the preschool.”

  26. ‘Before France is no longer France’: Politicians, figures sign anti-semitism manifesto

    • Dar al-Iftaa denounces French call to omit verses of Quran

The Dar al-Iftaa-affiliated Observatory of Islamophobia denounced a call by former director of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Philippe Val, to delete verses from the Holy Quran, which in his view call for fighting the Jews and Christians. The Observatory described the call as “hateful racism”.

The Observatory said in a report on Tuesday that Val had claimed to have garnered 300 signatures in favor of the idea by well-known figures in France, most notably former President Nicolas Sarkozy, former Prime Minister Manuel Carlos Valls, and the famous singer Charles Aznavour.

The Observatory denounced “such dangerous calls launched by some from time to time, causing attacks and antagonism against Muslims there, and creating a conflict among the people [of France]”.

These calls also uphold views that say that “France is not a land that welcomes Islam”, the Observatory added.

Marion Marshall Lyon made a similar statement before 2015 but was strongly rejected by the Republican Party and politicians, who considered it a racist invitation against French law, the Observatory’s statement said.

The Observatory called for a strong reaction against these “racist calls” along the lines of the previous reaction, stressing that giving these invitations an opportunity to grow feeds the phenomenon of Islamophobia on the one hand, and strengthens the feelings of Muslim minorities in France of marginalization and racism on the other, in turn, causing extremism to grow.

It called on the French society to adhere to the law which respects the exercise of religious rights and affirms the freedom of belief.

It also appealed to the Islamic institutions and bodies in the West to unite and work to apply the correct morals of Islam and revive the idea of coexistence with non-Muslims while respecting the law and maintaining the principles of religion away from conflict and division.

    • jihad watch – Hugh Fitzgerald: A Manifesto On Islamic Antisemitism Shows the France That Has Come to Its Senses

[…]This letter makes several important points: for all the absurd talk about Muslims “being the new Jews,” in France it is clear that the “new Jews” are still the Jews. […]

[…]Finally, the manifesto calls for verses of the Koran calling for the “murder and punishment of Jews, Christians and disbelievers” to be removed on the grounds that they are “obsolete.” That’s a good many verses in the Qur’an that would have to be removed. The uncompromising division of the world between Believer and Unbeliever, Muslim and non-Muslim, is not tangential, but rather central, to Islam.

Muslims were quick to respond. Within a day, they had denounced the letter, claiming that it unfairly stigmatized Islam.

As reported by Agence France-Presse, the letter sparked anger from Muslims who said their religion was being unfairly “put on trial.”

Unsurprisingly, there was the usual display of victimhood. The signatories were “blaming a whole religion for the actions of an extremist minority.”

[…]“The only thing we can agree on is that we must all unite against anti-Semitism,” said Ahmet Ogras, head of the French Council of the Muslim Faith umbrella group.

Dalil Boubakeur, rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris (a man paid by the French state, and always held up as the very model of a moderate Muslim), said the manifesto “subjected French Muslims and French Islam to an unbelievable and unfair trial.”

“It creates a clear risk of pitching religious communities against one another,” he said in a statement.

[…]This manifesto may represent a watershed. Truths have been told that cannot be un-told: that not the Muslims, but the Jews, are the “new Jews”; that Jews in France are 25 times as likely as Muslims to be the victims of attack; that Muslim antisemitism is virulent and is based on the clear meaning of many Qur’anic verses. Those verses, which preach hatred of Jews, Christians, and other non-Muslims, have to be rendered “obsolete,” the manifesto declares, if France is to remain France. In France, the large-scale presence of Muslims has created a country that is now, for the French and for other, non-Muslim immigrants, much more unpleasant, expensive, and physically dangerous than it would be without that presence. Former Prime Minister Manuel Valls memorably said that “France without its Jews would be unthinkable.” But just how unthinkable would France be without its Muslims? Or, to put it more acceptably, at least without those Muslims — a great many, alas — who refuse to treat as “obsolete” the Qur’anic verses that preach murder and persecution “of Jews, Christians, and disbelievers”?

  31. A Texas dad playing with his children at a local playground got quite a surprise when the police showed up to question him, stating that his pro-gun shirt was “making other parents uncomfortable”. Troy Johnston and his two daughters, ages four and six, stopped at Castle Park on March 30, so the children could enjoy the park’s swings and maze, he told Blue Lives Matter.

Several other parents approached Johnston while his daughters were playing, alerting him to the fact that a woman was very irate with the verbiage on his shirt and was threatening to call the police and warning other parents not to go into the park because of “a man with a gun”. Johnston was legally and openly carrying his handgun on a hip holster.

According Benbrook Police Department (BPD) Corporal J. Reese, a woman contacted the department at approximately 3:21 p.m., and reported a “suspicious person” with a “gun holstered to his chest,” was wearing a shirt that read “You control your kids, I’ll control my guns.”

  32. Dave Zirin of The Nation magazine, is apparently furious that “racist” President Donald Trump is preparing to issue a posthumous pardon for Jack Johnson, America’s first black heavyweight boxing champion.
Johnson, who died in 1946, was sentenced to ten months in prison in 1912 on a charge that was filed only because he was a black man. Therefore, a pardon makes sense, but strangely, even our first black president Barack Obama refused to right this century-old wrong.

Trump was approached with the idea of a pardon for Johnson by Hollywood action picture star Sylvester Stallone. Trump himself made a note of this in an April 21 tweet.

“Sylvester Stallone called me with the story of heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson,” Trump wrote. “His trials and tribulations were great, his life complex and controversial. Others have looked at this over the years, most thought it would be done, but yes, I am considering a Full Pardon!”

  33. Michael Bowman, a 53-year-old contract engineer who lives in Columbia City, Oregon, has refused to pay taxes, or even file a return, since 1999 due to his pro-life position. He stands with 60% of Americans against allocating public funds to abortion clinics.

“I’m not a tax protester. I love my country,” Bowman said to The Oregonian. “I have a duty to my country. I have a duty to my conscience.”

Due to his refusal to pay taxes from 2002-2014, the IRS has been on the attack. The Oregon Department of Revenue began garnishing wages directly from Bowman’s bank account in 2012. He responded by leaving only the minimum balance required in his account and cashing out all his paychecks.

Bowman’s defense, according to his attorney Matthew Schindler, was that he was careful to be fully transparent about his reasons and actions step by step, down to the last detail. All his checks were cashed under his own name and he showed the government full transparency with all his earnings.

“Like a player collapsing as they lose Twister, the government has reached too far forward and stretched way too far back,” Schindler said in his motion to dismiss.

Then, U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman made a monumental ruling last week, taking Bowman’s side on the felony charge. The IRS did not prove to the court that Bowman concealed any income or tried to deceive the U.S. government in any way. The prosecution still has the door open to re-introduce the charge, but they are currently deciding whether it is worth it for a case with such a rock solid defense.

  34. A high-ranking official at the Obama Justice Department attempted to shut down the FBI investigation into the Clinton Foundation while Hillary Clinton was running for president in 2016, according to a report (pdf) by the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General.

The revelation is part of a report on Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe that led to his firing in March. McCabe told investigators that on Aug. 12, 2016, he received a call from the principal associate deputy attorney general who “expressed concerns about FBI agents taking overt steps in the Clinton Foundation investigation during the presidential campaign.”

“Are you telling me that I need to shut down a validly predicated investigation?” McCabe fired back.

McCabe described the conversation as “very dramatic” and told the inspector general’s office that he “never had a similar confrontation” in his entire FBI career.

“This is a dramatic change, not least because it has been so fast,” said professor of Political Science Marie Demker who teaches at the University of Gothenburg.

Along with the increase in the number of voters who wanted more restrictive asylum policies, the number of Swedes demanding more asylum seekers also greatly decreased from 26 per cent to only 12 per cent.

  39. A device that resembles an old phonograph may soon be used to jam and shut down vehicles like the one that killed 10 people in Toronto.

The van driver who killed 10 Toronto pedestrians on Monday showed that a terror technique that ISIS pioneered in Iraq and Syria in 2015 remains terrifyingly effective against unsuspecting urban populations. But the U.S. military is working on a new weapon to stop vehicle-born terrorist threats, one that could help police departments as well.

The Defense Department’s Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program, or JNLWD, is pushing ahead with a new direct energy weapon that uses high-powered microwaves to stop cars in their tracks without damaging the vehicle, its driver, or anyone else.

The jammer works by targeting the car’s engine control unit causing it to reboot over and over, stalling the engine. Like an invisible hand, the microwaves hold the car in place. “Anything that has electronics on it, these high-powered microwaves will affect,” David Law, who leads JNLWD’s technology division, said in March. “As long as the [radio] is on, it holds the vehicle stopped.”

  40. Israeli sources reported that an extreme leftist group funded by the NIF and European governments is trying to use Israel’s justice system to stop the US’ historic Jerusalem embassy move.

By: Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

The extreme left-wing Ir Amim organization has joined a few Jerusalem citizens in petitioning the High Court of Justice (HCJ) to stop the construction work necessary to change the American consulate in Jerusalem into an embassy, reported Mako and Mida, two Israeli news sites.

Much of Ir Amim’s funding comes from abroad, including NIS 6.5 million from the American-registered New Israel Fund (NIF) over the last eight years, according to NGO Monitor. Over the same period, Ir Amim also received nearly NIS 2 million from the EU, NIS 3.6 million from Germany, and millions more from other countries that object to the democratically elected Israeli government’s internal affairs.

Concerning Ir Amim’s battle to fight the embassy move, the court decided not to issue an interim order last week to stop the work while it decides whether or not to accept the petition, Mida reported. Judge Solberg, who made the decision, noted that the chances of the petition being accepted are low. Still, the state is scheduled to give its response later this week, and a discussion will take place on May 7th.

Alfie Evans’ parents are headed back to court after Alfie defied his court-ordered death and breathed on his own for 17 hours without life-support.

Doctors at Alder Hey Hospital removed Alfie from assisted breathing at 9:17 p.m. local time after U.K. judges approved plans to end his life support treatment despite the fact that hospital staff missed the initial court ordered time, 12 p.m., for ending his treatment, according to The Sun.

Tom Evans, Alfie’s father, said that it was apparent within minutes of being removed from assisted breathing that Alfie was breathing on his own, leaving doctors “gobsmacked.” Alfie continued to breathe throughout the night, for 17 hours, and is still alive despite being temporarily denied water, food, and oxygen assistance. Doctors expected him to last only minutes after being taken off life support. (RELATED: Judge Strikes Down Appeal For Alfie Evans’ Life)
