    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-06/tuesday-is-execution-day-in-egypt/9512570

“Every Tuesday is execution day in Egypt, a trend established late last year with 23 men killed since the end of December…

In 2017, 49 “political prisoners” were hanged in Egypt, more than double the number executed in 2016.

Most were convicted on terror-related charges or for attempts to overthrow the state. Towards the end of February, a court sentenced 21 suspected extremists to death for planning terror attacks.

According to Amnesty International, Egypt is ranked sixth globally in the number of people executed, joining China, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.

Last month, the United Nations expressed “deep shock” at the rate of executions that began late last year and were particularly concerned about the lack of due process in military and civilian trials.

Human rights activists have also been unable to explain the timing of the executions.

“The number of deaths is unprecedented in every way,” says Islam El Rabie, a researcher with Cairo-based human rights group Adalah who examines the executions in the report, In The Name of the People.

Egypt’s civilian and military courts sentenced more than 330 people to death last year alone, with many trials often held in secret without public access for media or human rights groups…”

    • Whither Egypt’s Democracy?

      • Since his election as Egypt’s president in 2014, Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi has continued to fight against the Muslim Brotherhood and extremist Islamic organizations, such as ISIS. El-Sisi is doing his utmost to keep Egypt governing under a secular regime – even if it comes at the expense of civil rights.

      • At the same time, el-Sisi has deepened his security relationship with Israel to bolster his battle for control of the Sinai.

      • What can Egypt, or the rest of the world, expect, from upcoming presidential elections, which present the incumbent president with little or no opposition?

    • This is where the cultural differences play a major role, the Arabicized culture in the Middle East is heavily weighted to a brutal strong man leading the nations. The modern useful idiots are so indoctrinated in the idea that all cultures are equal and that all are pretty much the same look at what is done in Egypt and condemn the governments actions. Then when they replace a brutal man who is working to suppress the terrorist ideology with a man who supports terrorism they deny that what happened was easily foreseeable.

  3. Sri Lanka declares state of emergency after Buddhist-Muslim clashes (abc, Mar 6, 2018)
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-06/sri-lanka-declares-state-of-emergency/9520118

“Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency for 10 days to rein in the spread of communal violence, according to a government spokesman, after clashes erupted between majority Buddhists and members of the minority Muslim community.

Tension has been growing between the two communities in Sri Lanka over the past year, with some hardline Buddhist groups accusing Muslims of forcing people to convert to Islam and vandalising Buddhist archaeological sites.

Some Buddhist nationalist have also protested against the presence in Sri Lanka of Muslim Rohingya asylum seekers from mostly Buddhist Myanmar, where Buddhist nationalism has also been on the rise.

He said some people were instigating violence through Facebook and warned of tough action against them.

The unrest in the Indian Ocean island’s central district of Kandy began on Sunday after the funeral of a truck driver from the majority Sinhalese Buddhist community, who died days after he was involved in an altercation with four Muslims, the Government has said.

It was not clear why the initial altercation occurred, but on Monday a Sinhalese mob attacked Muslim shops, police said.

They said the body of a Muslim youth was found in a burnt-out house early on Tuesday.

Muslims make up about 9 per cent of Sri Lanka’s 21 million people. Buddhists make up about 70 per cent and ethnic Tamils, most of whom are Hindus, about 13 per cent.

The Government sent troops and elite police to the area on Monday and imposed a curfew. A curfew was reimposed in two districts of Kandy on Tuesday, police said.

The Government ended a 26-year civil war in 2009 with the defeat of Tamil separatist rebels.

Muslim communities were occasionally caught up in that violence but on the whole, Muslims managed to stay out of the war.”

    • Sri Lanka: Army rolls in as state of emergency declared after unrest

Sri Lanka declared a nationwide state of emergency after days of violent unrest between Sinhalese and Muslim communities, as shown in footage filmed in Kandy on Tuesday.

The special measures permitting soldiers to be deployed in civilian areas will initially apply for ten days, at which point the deployment would need to be ratified by parliament

Arson attacks and riots have hit the central district of Kandy in recent days and there was similar violence in late February when mobs set fire to Muslim-owned businesses and a mosque in the east.

The violence in Kandy is understood to have been sparked when a group of Muslim men in Digana town were accused of killing a man belonging to the majority Sinhala Buddhist community, who make up about 75 percent of the population.

Muslim-owned shops were set alight in response and the violence spiralled out of control after monks from hardline Buddhist groups Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) travelled to the town to negotiate the release of the accused men.

Tensions between Muslims, who make up about ten percent of the population, and the majority Sinhala Buddhist community have existed for decades but have become more acute since the end of the civil war.

  4. Italy: Tensions run high in Florence as protesters rally against African vendor’s killing

Protesters overturned bins and damaged property in Florence, Monday, to denounce the killing of an African street vendor who was shot to death in the city centre earlier in the day.

“African immigrants marched through the streets of central Florence late on Monday chanting “no more racism” after an Italian man shot dead a Senegalese street vendor earlier in the day.

Police said Roberto Pirrone had fired six pistol shots at close range, killing Idy Dienec as he sold leather bags, umbrellas and trinkets on a bridge in the Tuscan city, one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations.

Later, dozens of immigrants marched through the historic centre of Florence, knocking over trash bins, motor scooters and large flower pots.

The shooting came a day after a parliamentary election in which politicians often portrayed migrants as criminals and called for mass deportations.

Police told Reuters on Tuesday that the murder was not racially motivated, citing testimony Pirrone gave to investigators after his arrest. Pirrone, who had a licence to carry a weapon for sport, was suicidal and lashed out in a state of confusion, investigators said.

But the timing of the attack raised suspicions among Florence’s large Senegalese community.

In the election, the anti-immigrant League became the second-biggest party in parliament.

“The fact that the elections went the way they did shows the kind of mood the country is in,” said Pape Diaw, a representative of the Senegalese community, before the march. “Italy has become a country where blacks are shot on the street.”

Last month a man with neo-Nazi sympathies and ties to the League opened fire on African migrants in the city of Macerata, wounding six before he was captured.

Dienec, the 54-year-old victim of Monday’s attack, had legally lived in Italy for many years, police said. But more than 600,000 boat migrants have arrived on Italian shores in the past four years, making immigration a top concern for voters during the campaign.

The League and the 5-Star Movement, which emerged as the largest party in the vote, both have promised to ramp up deportations of irregular migrants.

Monday’s shooting is not the first targeting African vendors in Florence. Six years ago, an Italian right-wing extremist shot dead two street sellers and wounded three others in a racist rampage.”

      • I’m sure it will all calm down when the Muslims start acting like decent humans. Anyone know how long that takes?

        • So far this happened in recorded history, at a rough guess at lease another 2,000 years maybe more.

  5. UK – Umar Haque, teacher who groomed boys for Isis-inspired terror, searched for transgender prostitutes

A teacher who groomed young children to join him on an Islamic State-inspired terrorist attack had been searching online for transgender prostitutes.

Umar Haque, 25, who infiltrated the school system, was convicted on Friday of preparing terrorist acts with targets including Tower Bridge and Big Ben in central London.

Haque had told police that gay clubs were also among the targets he was considering and said that he did not like Britain because of “mass fornication, mass illicit behaviour”.

The police investigation discovered that he had been searching online for transgender prostitutes but the jury at the Old Bailey was unaware of his hypocrisy. A listening device, planted in his car by MI5, had also picked up him discussing marrying young girls.

  7. FRANCE –Man attacked with machete in front of shocked diners at Paris restaurant

A man was attacked with a machete and reportedly “scalped” as he ate dinner with his wife at an Indian restaurant in Paris on Monday night.

Diners at an Indian restaurant in the 10th arrondissement of the French capital witnessed the shocking scene on Monday night when a man, who was also eating at the restaurant, was attacked and reportedly scalped at his table.

The incident, which took place at a restaurant 8.30pm on Rue Cail, a street well known for its curry restaurants, saw two men whose faces were covered by hoods burst into the restaurant armed with a sword and a machete, according to French press reports.

The two men then attacked the man who was having dinner with his wife.

According to reports, the victim — a Sri Lankan man aged 35 — received several wounds to the head, elbow and wrist, suffering very serious injuries before he was taken to the nearest hospital. The victim remains in a critical state.

Meanwhile, the perpetrators managed to escape.

“He was scalped and had his arm and wrist severely cut,” a source close to the case told the French press.

It is believed that this terrible aggression could be part of a settling of scores in the Sri Lankan community and an investigation is underway.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, has told South Korean envoys that his country is willing to begin negotiations with the United States on abandoning its nuclear weapons and that it would suspend all nuclear and missile tests while it is engaged in such talks, South Korean officials said on Tuesday.

During the envoys’ two-day visit to Pyongyang, the North’s capital, which ended on Tuesday, the two Koreas also agreed to hold a summit meeting between Mr. Kim and President Moon Jae-in of South Korea on the countries’ border in late April, Mr. Moon’s office said in a statement.

“The North Korean side clearly stated its willingness to denuclearize,” the statement said. “It made it clear that it would have no reason to keep nuclear weapons if the military threat to the North was eliminated and its security guaranteed.”

A three-way deal has seemingly been reached in the complex web of Syrian politics.

BEIRUT – A three-way deal has seemingly been reached in the complex web of Syrian politics, allowing the Turkish Army to possibly move into Manbij, west of the Euphrates River, side by side with US forces, in exchange for letting the Syrian Army or allied military groups enter Afrin instead of Kurdish militias.

Implicitly, the Russians see this as a green light to march on the last remaining enclave of the armed opposition in Ghouta, the agricultural belt around Damascus, which they started doing — raising international outcry — on February 20.

There is nothing Syrian about the agreement, reached on their behalf by the Russians, Americans and Turks. Apart from that, all sides seem satisfied with it, with the exception, of course, of the Syrian opposition.

The Manbij deal was hammered out by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu during the former’s visit to Ankara. It allows the Turks to march on Manbij, a multiethnic city overrun by the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2014 and liberated by the nearly all-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in 2016.

FBI Director Christopher Wray reportedly asked deputy director Andrew McCabe to step down in light of some of the findings of the inspector general.

One aspect of the reported findings, however, stands out. Hundreds of the agency’s employees moved into their beautiful $124 million headquarters across the street from the White House in October as construction was still underway. Upon entering, they discovered rats also were making it their home, according to two sources who spoke to TheDCNF on the condition of anonymity.

The $124,000,000 price tag was double the original $55 million estimate and 25 percent over the $99 million estimate approved by Richard Cordray, the bureau’s first director. China defends hike in military spending as proportionate and low

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s increase in military spending for 2018, the biggest rise in three years, was proportionate and low, and Beijing had not been goaded into an arms race with the United States, state media said on Tuesday.

China on Monday unveiled an 8.1 percent rise in defense spending at the opening of parliament, fuelling an ambitious military modernization program and making its neighbors, particularly Japan and self-ruled Taiwan, nervous.

In an editorial, the official China Daily said the figure had prompted “finger-pointing from the usual suspects”.

“China’s defense budget is neither the largest in size – it accounts for just one-fourth of the military spending of the United States – nor does it have the fastest growth rate,” the English-language newspaper said.

“And if calculated in per capita terms, China’s military lags well behind other major countries.”

The defense spending figure is closely watched worldwide for clues to China’s strategic intentions as it develops new military capabilities, including stealth fighters, aircraft carriers and anti-satellite missiles.

BERLIN (Reuters) – Angela Merkel does not want Germany’s national anthem to be changed, her spokesman said after a member of the chancellor’s Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partner said words such as “fatherland” and “brotherland” should be made gender neutral.

The ruling does not overturn two other federal courts, who had previously blocked the phaseout, which was supposed to take effect Monday. But it does offer a needed boost as the Justice Department appeals those other two rulings.

According to Åberg, he has managed to find some 750 cases of hate speech emanating from Swedish social media accounts and reported them to the police.

For his work campaigning against Swedish citizens making disparaging remarks online, Åberg is in the running for newspaper Aftonbladet’s award which celebrates “everyday heroes who demonstrated courage, civil courage and humanity,” Aftonbladet reports.

  27. BUDAPEST — Just weeks before Hungary’s parliamentary election, a court is expected to rule on a case that has come to symbolize Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s anti-migrant agenda for both his supporters and opponents.

The court in the southern city of Szeged is due to give its verdict in the retrial of a Syrian man convicted of terrorism and jailed for 10 years for his role in a confrontation between police and asylum-seekers on the border with Serbia in 2015.

Orbán’s government has repeatedly held up the case as an example of the Hungarian state’s hard line on asylum-seekers and staunch defense of its borders — and of its battles with the European Union over the rule of law and democracy.

  28. US: Muslim Calls for Murder Increasing

In December 2017, four imams — at mosques in North Carolina, New Jersey and Texas — called for killing Jews. Two of the imams quoted from a hadith that says:

“The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him”.

Two other imams, respectively, asked Allah “to destroy the Zionists and their allies, and those who assist them” and “to wreak vengeance upon the plundering oppressors”.

Prior to these December calls, in July 2017, two imams in California (Riverside and Davis) also called for killing Jews. One imam quoted the hadith above. He later apologized, claiming that “The last thing that I would do is intentionally hurt anyone, Muslim, Jewish or otherwise. It is not in my heart”.

It may not be in his heart, but it was in his mouth, and it is in the Quran and the hadiths, which are filled[1] with supremacist and violent references not only to Jews, but to all non-Muslims.

During the final months of the Clinton email investigation, FBI agent Peter Strzok was advised of an irregularity in the metadata of Hillary Clinton’s server that suggested a possible breach, but there was no significant follow up, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter.

Sources told Fox News that Strzok, who sent anti-Trump text messages that got him removed from the ongoing Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, was told about the metadata anomaly in 2016, but Strzok did not support a formal damage assessment.

  31. Eager to deport migrants, German AfD scouts out Syria situation (reuters, Mar 6, 2018)

“Lawmakers from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) are on a fact-finding trip to Syria, said members of the anti-immigrant group, which wants Syria to be classified a safe country of origin in a move that would make it easier to deport failed asylum seekers.

Syrians make up the biggest single group of asylum seekers among the more than a million migrants fleeing war and poverty who have arrived in Europe’s largest economy since mid-2015.

The migrant influx, facilitated by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s 2015 decision to open Germany’s borders, was a boon for the anti-immigrant AfD. It won 12.6 percent in September’s election, becoming the biggest opposition party and the first far-right group to sit in the German parliament since the 1960s.

A statement by the lawmakers posted on the Facebook page of Christian Blex, an AfD parliamentarian in the regional assembly of the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, said that he and six other AfD members – some of them lawmakers in the national parliament – were on a private visit to Syria from March 5.

“The experiences the MPs gain will enable them to rationally evaluate the situation in Syria regarding continuing discussions about classifying it as a safe country of origin, which would also affect the decision about halting deportations of rejected asylum seekers,” the statement said.

The AfD regularly lambasts the media as unreliable and the statement said they did not trust German coverage of Syria, and so the lawmakers would seek to find out first-hand about life in liberated areas of Syria and the government’s efforts to provide services for returning refugees.

The AfD in November proposed repatriating half a million Syrian refugees, saying the war was nearly over and that President Bashar al-Assad had urged refugees to return home.

However, fighting is continuing in many areas, the United Nations says, in a complex civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people since 2011 and forced millions to flee in the worst refugee crisis since World War Two.

Germany has not deported anyone to Syria since 2012 and in December extended that policy until the end of 2018.

The German upper and lower houses of parliament decide which countries go on the list of safe countries of origin.

Blex posted photos of busy roads, a swimming pool and buildings along with a caption which said they had arrived in Damascus and added: “You hardly see any military. There are adverts for mobile phones and televisions. Normal daily life.”

Blex said in a separate Facebook posts that the delegation had spoken to representatives of the Syrian parliament and met Syria’s Grand Mufti Ahmed Badr al-Din Hassoun, who Blex said called upon all Syrian refugees to return home. The lawmakers said they also plan to visit education facilities.

The visit takes place as Russia has offered Syrian rebels safe passage out of the Damascus enclave of eastern Ghouta, setting out a deal by which the opposition would surrender its last major stronghold near Damascus to Assad.”

  32. Brotherhood Supreme Guide “dying slowly” in Egypt, says his daughter (memo, Mar 6, 2018)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20180306-brotherhood-supreme-guide-dying-slowly-in-egypt-says-his-daughter/

“The daughter of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide wrote on her Facebook page yesterday that her father is suffering from illnesses contracted inside the Egyptian prison where he is being incarcerated and doesn’t have any blankets or soap.

Duha Mohamed Badie said that her father is “dying slowly” in Tora prison.

“Blankets have been taken away [from my father’s prison cell]. He has been sleeping on the floor for more than a year now, and without blankets. The only chair in the cell has been taken away,” she wrote.

Since a 2013 military coup that ousted President Mohamed Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood, the group’s leaders and members have been subjected to an unprecedented crackdown. A series of arrest campaigns has left hundreds behind bars.

Many members of the Brotherhood, like Badie, are facing multiple trials in multiple court cases and are serving prison sentences or being held in pre-trial detention.

The Egyptian government has banned the Muslim Brotherhood and accuses members of perpetrating violence and terrorism, which they have repeatedly denied.

Mohamed Badie, 74, is suffering from several health problems: “He cannot sit on the floor or get up without leaning on that chair, and he cannot prostrate or even kneel [during the Muslim prayer]. He used to pray [sitting] on that chair.”

Duha Badie also complained that her father is not even allowed to use the washroom in privacy. Officers “storm cells at any time,” violating Badie’s privacy, she wrote.

Duha Badie asked, “How can [this happen to] an old man who has been denied [family] visits for a year and a half, and has been held in solitary confinement for nearly five years?””

  35. Elephants kill 10 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh: UN

GENEVA (AFP) – Elephants searching for food have trampled 10 Rohingya refugees to death in multiple incidents, the UN said on Tuesday (March 6), announcing a new plan to foster “safe coexistence” between animals and sprawling refugee settlements.

Some 700,000 people from Myanmar’s Rohingya community have fled over the border to Bangladesh since August, following an army crackdown that the UN has said amounts to an ongoing campaign of “ethnic cleansing”.

Refugee camps have shot up in Bangladesh’s border area of Cox’s Bazar, including Kutupalong which is now the largest refugee camp in the world.

Living conditions for refugees remain extremely difficult despite a growing international response, but the United Nations refugee agency said the threat from elephants had emerged as a new concern.

“The area now occupied by the Kutupalong refugee settlement has long been an important habitat for Asian Elephants. There are about 40 elephants in the area and they move between Bangladesh and Myanmar in search of food,” the Geneva-based agency said in a statement.

“When wild elephants attempt to pass through the camp they inevitably come into contact with people, which is where the danger arises.

“Tragically 10 refugees have been killed by frightened elephants inside the settlements. Other people have been injured and lost the little property they had,” the statement further said.

UNHCR announced it had formed a partnership with International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which has experience in Bangladesh helping people live alongside wild elephants.

The plan includes trainers who can teach refugees how to respond when an elephant approaches, including by detering it from entering the camp.

Myanmar and Bangladesh have announced provisional plans for the Rohingya – a mostly Muslim ethnic group – to return home to Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state.

But rights groups and the UN have warned that conditions for their return are not close to being in place.
