    Elaine Duke, the acting secretary in charge of defending the US from terror attacks, warned small scale knife and vehicle attacks were only a means to gain funding from supporters and keep followers engaged in their unholy war.

    It comes as MI5 boss Andrew Parker warns the UK is facing an unprecedented threat from terrorists.

    Speaking at the US embassy in London, Ms Duke said: “The terrorist organisations, be it ISIS or others, want to have the big explosion like they did on 9/11. They want to take down aircraft, the intelligence is clear on that.

    “However, in the interim, they need to keep their finances flowing and they need to keep their visibility high and they need to keep their members engaged, so they are using small plots and they are happy to have small plots.”

    Her comments follow a wave of terror in the UK, including the London Bridge, Westminster Bridge and Manchester arena attacks which had a combined death toll of 40 while leaving 347 injured.

    She added: “Creating terror is their goal and so a van attack, a bladed weapon attack, causes terror and continues to disrupt the world – but does not mean they’ve given up on a major aviation plot.”

    The security expert, who was elevated to the position after General John Kelly became President Trump’s right-hand man, claimed the UK faces unique challenges on terror compared to the US.

    She added: “We think the level of terrorist threat against the United States too is extremely high…”

  2. Trump celebrates Diwali at White House, hails contributions of Indian-Americans

    United States (US) President Donald Trump has celebrated his first Diwali at the White House during which he hailed the incredible contributions of the Indian-American community and said he valued his very strong relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    Trump and his daughter Ivanka was joined by senior Indian-American members of his administration including Nikki Haley, his Ambassador to the United Nations and Seema Verma, Administrator, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

    Ajit Pai, Chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission and Raj Shah, Trump’s Principal Deputy Press Secretary also joined Diwali celebrations yesterday.

    “As we do (celebrate Diwali) so, we especially remember the People of India, the home of the Hindu faith, who have built the world’s largest democracy,” Trump said in a Facebook post along with a video of his Diwali celebrations inside the Oval Office.

    NR: Realpolitik or not, this is a shrewd move by Trump. It is crucial for the West to prise (the traditionally non-aligned) India away from its Communist leanings. Fortunately, Beijing already is doing a splendid job of this right now. That said, Red China remains the (soon-to-panic) elephant in the Asian hen house whose looming collapse spells severe, if not disastrous, complications for the entire region.

    Be that as it may, New Delhi’s continued dalliance with Russia—especially regarding armament purchases—is a matter of great concern. At the very least, Moscow will offer less than nothing in the way of genuine encouragement with respect to eliminating corruption. As in: These multi-million and multi-billion arms deals are irresistible opportunities for baksheesh to cross more palms than a hypoglycemic thrush.

    Amongst the BRIC countries (i.e., Brazil, India, China, and Russia), only India has the potential to rapidly attain Second World status in any sort of near-term time frame. While Communist China is struggling rather valiantly to gain this same Second World rank—their long-standing subscription to toxic policies like OFOC (One Family One Child) and total disregard for widespread environmental devastation points towards some serious stumbling blocks. A glaring lack of Democratic multiparty traditions, nonexistent religious freedom, slow adoption of the English language, and little in the way of free speech all point towards Beijing being the proverbial tortoise to New Delhi’s modern cheetah.

    There are few other nations on earth so well-poised to become valuable strategic allies for the West than India. However sad it is that Hindus persist in maintaining ultra-racist tendencies, much like those of the Chinese—examine how many cross-race intermarriages you have seen between Indians versus Chinese (or Asians in general)—there remains a lack of the “Master Race” syndrome so often demonstrated by both Chinese and Muslims (in that order).

    Anyhoo, if the West is shopping for an ally to oppose Russian and Red Chinese influences, there are few better starting points than India. Recruiting the Subcontinent should be a top priority when it comes to attenuating the sway of Moscow and Beijing, be it regional or global.

        A bit more disturbing is: Who, exactly, does Israel sell arms to?

        As in: “Two of the top ten recipients of Israeli arms are Muslim nations.”

        This issue, regarding exactly who Israel sells weapons and technology to, remains one of my central concerns and objections about Tel Aviv’s game plan. Especially when it involves the migration of weapon designs between America and Communist China. Any clarification is very much welcome.

        • Once I was at an Amnesty International protest and there was a few people mumbling criticism of Stephen Harper because he was selling a large amount of Canadian made C7 rifles to the Saudis. They felt it was wrong to do so. So I asked, “How far away is Saudi Arabia?” and they said, “I dunno, ten to twelve thousand miles?” and I responded, “what is the range of a C7 rifle?” and the Amnesty guy said “oh i guess a mile and a half”, and I said, “Give the Saudis all the rifles they want free. Charge for the ammo if you must but I don’t see how this can possibly be a lose for us.

          The Israelis likely feel the same. It is infinitely safer for Muslim nations to shoot each other than gang up on Israel and make Israel kill them in self defence. Israel loses no matter what happens except when there is no conflict. Better to let the Muslim states enjoy their wars between themselves.

            I could not agree with you more. Please note my reference to “multi-million and multi-billion arms deals”. These are the serious problems.

            Selling Arab countries non “dual-use” technologies (i.e., small arms and ammunition that DO NOT include RPGs or Stinger MANPADS) works just fine for me.

            The more that these barbaric loons snuff themselves with such gleeful abandon, the better off all world populations are (including peaceful Muslims).

        You already replied to my lengthy comment about India’s critical role in creating a pro-Western bloc against Communist China. All that this requires is for Modi to grow a fecking brain about who really gives a rusty fü¢k regarding India and whatever prospects there are for the world’s Hindu population.

        If New Delhi keeps up their counterproductive and divisive strategy of walking both sides of the street (like a Jonesing crack whore), then all that they have to look forward to is whatever upcoming nuclear confrontation will happen with Communist China—not to mention Pakistan—which, most likely will go entirely undefended by the West.

        Essentially, for India, it’s go (BIG) “NATO” or go (HOME) it alone. After all, who else is going to ask India to get onboard right now? Certainly not Red China. Clasping Russia as an ally is little better than grasping a boat anchor after abandoning ship.

        Please correct me if I’m wrong but the BRIC alliance seems more than a little dead. With China’s endlessly manipulated currency swirling in the proverbial, glistening porcelain receptacle, and Russia’s own Ruble nailed to the mast of their dependence upon a faltering (i.e., monetarily challenged) petroleum economy—one that is increasingly punctured by a desperately competitive Muslim Middle East quest for petrodollars—how can Moscow continue pretending that there’s any friendship with its Islamic pals (i.e., Syria) that are dedicated to driving terrorist attacks throughout everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere including Russia as well?

      Amongst the many essays that I’m currently researching is one (a work in progress), titled “The Silent Jihad”. It addresses how too many of Islam’s existing attacks upon Western nations involve psychosexual and socioeconomic predation.

      The cruel and vicious, non-militaristic challenges poised by Islam against all issues point towards the most brutal, and unprecedented responses ever poised against Western forces. By comparison, nuclear weapons will seem humane.

      All of which is why I continue to predict their use and, just the same, deplore the likelihood of their engagement.

      The world that (ostensibly) bequeaths a North Korean or Iranian Pandora’s Box of Nuclear Weapons cannot simultaneously assure global safety. Again, thank you for your declared and determined reporting.

    Thirteen rebels among the few dozen Islamic State loyalists holed up in the decimated heart of Marawi City were killed in the operation and Malaysian Mahmud Ahmad was likely among them, taskforce deputy commander Colonel Romeo Brawner said.

Read a quran and then tell me if Islam was written to be an enemy to all others or not.   18. Catalonia crisis: Spain moves to suspend autonomy

    Spain is to start suspending Catalonia’s autonomy from Saturday, as the region’s leader threatens to declare independence.

    The government said ministers would meet to activate Article 155 of the constitution, allowing it to take over running of the region.

    Catalonia’s leader said the region’s parliament would vote on independence if Spain continued “repression”.

    Catalans voted to secede in a referendum outlawed by Spain.

    Some fear the latest moves could spark further unrest after mass demonstrations before and since the ballot on 1 October.

    Spain’s supreme court declared the vote illegal and said it violated the constitution, which describes the country as indivisible.

  19. Spain to trigger direct rule on Catalonia to crush independence bid

    (CNN)The Spanish government said Thursday it would begin the process to impose direct rule on Catalonia in an unprecedented move to crush the region’s independence bid.
    In a statement from Madrid, the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said it would invoke Article 155 of the constitution, a provision that allows the central government to suspend the autonomy of the Catalan regional administration.
    Rajoy’s Cabinet will meet on Saturday to agree measures to “restore the constitutional order” in Catalonia, where a banned referendum on independence took place earlier this month. The plan will then be put before the Senate, where Rajoy’s Popular Party has a majority, for approval.

    The statement did not spell out what steps would be taken under Article 155, but the provision gives Madrid the power to take over the running of Catalan institutions and force new elections. It has never been invoked before.

  20. Cambridge University students given trigger warnings for Shakespeare plays

    Academics say degree of sensitivity will ‘curtail academic freedom’

    have criticised “trigger warnings” after Cambridge University students were warned about “potentially distressing topics” in plays by Shakespeare.

    English literature undergraduates were apparently cautioned that a lecture focusing on Titus Andronicus and The Comedy of Errors would include “discussions of sexual violence” and “sexual assault”.

    According to The Telegraph, the trigger warnings were posted in the English Faculty’s ‘Notes on Lectures’ document which is circulated to students at the university.

  21. Drudge, Facebook, NYT readers could face libel suits for sharing ‘fake news’

    Political content on the internet, paid or not, should face substantial federal regulation to eliminate undefined “disinformation,” and users of platforms and news feeds, from Facebook, to Twitter, to the Drudge Report and even New York Times, could be punished for sharing “fake news” from those sites, the former Democratic chair of the FEC is urging.

    In a broad proposal that adds threatening libel suits to regulatory plans already pushed by Democrats on the Federal Election Commission, ex-chair Ann Ravel believes that there is support for expanded regulation in the wake of reports foreign governments spent $100,000 on 2016 political ads on Facebook.

    She would include “fake news,” not just paid ads, to be regulated, though it’s never defined other than the Democrat’s description of “disinformation.” And anybody who shares or retweets it could face a libel suit.

  22. U.S. bill to regulate internet ads gains bipartisan support with McCain

    (Reuters) – U.S. legislation that would impose new disclosure requirements on political ads that run on Facebook and other websites received support on Wednesday from Senator John McCain, giving a bipartisan boost to a bill already popular among Democrats.

    McCain, a longtime supporter of regulating campaign finances, and two Democratic senators, Amy Klobuchar and Mark Warner, plan to introduce the legislation on Thursday, according to a statement from their offices on Wednesday.

    Republicans control the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, so bills generally need Republican support to advance.

    Online political ads are much more loosely regulated in the United States than political ads on television, radio and satellite services.

    The lack of regulation was highlighted last month when Facebook Inc, Alphabet Inc’s Google and Twitter Inc said that they had found election-related ad buys on their services made by people in Russia in the run-up to last year’s U.S. presidential election. Non-Americans are generally not allowed to spend money to influence U.S. elections.

      In a shallow attempt to pass sweeping Federal regulation under the rationalization of countering “foreign interference” ex-FEC-chair Ann Ravel believes that there “is support for expanded regulation in the wake of reports foreign governments spent $100,000 on 2016 political ads on Facebook.”

      She would also use regulation to “improve voter competence,” according to the new proposal titled Fool Me Once: The Case for Government Regulation of ‘Fake News.’ Ravel, who now lectures at Berkeley Law, still has allies on the FEC who support internet regulation. The paper was co-written by Abby K. Wood, an associate professor at the University of Southern California, and Irina Dykhne, a student at USC Gould School of Law.

      The proposal immediately came under fire from the Republican FEC commissioner who for years has been warning of the left’s effort to regulate political talk they don’t like, especially on conservative newsfeeds like Drudge.

      Lee Goodman told Secrets, “Ann’s proposal is full blown regulation of all political content, even discussion of issues, posted at any time, for free or for a fee, on any online platform, from Facebook to the NewYorkTimes.com.”

      He was especially critical of the undefined nature of “disinformation” to be regulated and the first-ever call for libel suits to snuff out talk Ravel doesn’t like.

      In their proposal, the trio wrote, “after a social media user clicks ‘share’ on a disputed item (if the platforms do not remove them and only label them as disputed), government can require that the user be reminded of the definition of libel against a public figure. Libel of public figures requires ‘actual malice,’ defined as knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard for the truth. Sharing an item that has been flagged as untrue might trigger liability under libel laws.”

      Goodman said, “A fatal flaw of Ann’s proposal is that it cannot define what is, or is not, ‘disinformation’ in a political message. Nevertheless, it proposes to tag threats of libel lawsuits and liability to thousands of American citizens who might want to retweet or forward a message that somebody else subjectively considers to be ‘disinformational.’ I call that the big chill.”

      And Andrew Woodson, an elections lawyer and partner at Wiley Rein LLP added, “Any proposal built on intimidating Americans from sharing news stories on social media is headed in the wrong direction.”

      They also want to build a national database of all regulated political ads and discussions, a potential invasion of privacy especially for bloggers or people who comment on news and Facebook posts, Goodman warned.

      “Americans should not be required to sign a national registry everytime they post a political video on YouTube,” he said.

      Ravel is clearly concerned about how the internet is used to influence voters and is also worried voters aren’t educated enough to know they are being given bad info. She is also worried about the financial disclosure, sometimes not required if no money is involved.

      “The money involved in online political advertising is more diffuse than ad buys on traditional media. Like traditional ads, some ads produced for the Internet have high production costs. Others, like memes, are free to create. Unlike television and radio ads, some online ads are placed for free. Posting an ad to one’s Facebook Page, or tweeting it into a politically active social network in hopes it goes viral, costs nothing. Advertisers might pay a platform to promote the ad and place it in certain users’ newsfeeds. They might also buy ‘likes,’ ‘shares,’ and ‘retweets’ outside of the platforms, from ‘troll farms’ and ‘sock puppets,’ which are humans who create false profiles and boost content, or from ‘bot armies,’ which are machines mimicking human behavior to boost content,” the trio wrote.

    As a follow-up to Tuesday’s story about Russian uranium officials’ collusion with the Clintons in order to gain access to the U.S uranium supply, the Hill reports that it spoke to the attorney of the American businessman who served as an undercover FBI confidential witness.     Republican lawmakers are threatening to scuttle President Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) nominees after reports suggested the agency will reduce biofuels that are mixed in with gasoline.

    “Plenty of senators” are considering opposing Trump EPA picks, unless the agency backs off a plan to dial down the renewable fuel standard, Sen. Chuck Grassley said Tuesday. Pruitt is floating the idea of dramatically reducing the standard, Politico reported prior to Grassley’s comments.

    “Hold up EPA nominees. I think there’s plenty of senators would do that,” Grassley told reporters when asked how he planned to hold Pruitt and Trump to the fire. The Iowa Republican also said that he would be willing to go all out to maintain the standard.

    “I’ll oppose any effort to reduce blending levels or undermine the integrity of the RFS,” Grassley said in a statement late Tuesday. “I’m watching this issue closely and plan to hold the administration accountable.”

    The Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip on Thursday dismissed US and Israeli demands that it lay down its arms and recognize the Jewish state, saying the terror organization was to debate “when to wipe out Israel.”

    The remarks came during a closed roundtable discussion between Yahya Sinwar and Gazan youth about the ongoing reconciliation negotiations with rival Palestinian faction Fatah, to which some media outlets were invited to attend.

    “Over is the time Hamas spent discussing recognizing Israel. Now Hamas will discuss when we will wipe out Israel,” Sinwar said, according to the Hamas-linked news agency Shehab.

    A Hamas spokesperson released a few official quotes from the meeting. This Sinwar comment was not included in the transcript, which featured the Hamas leader again rejecting disarmament and Israel recognition.

    “No one in the universe can disarm us. On the contrary, we will continue to have the power to protect our citizens,” Sinwar said, according to the statement. “No one has the ability to extract from us recognition of the occupation.”

    Since its inception nearly three decades ago, Hamas has sought to destroy the State of Israel.

    A celebrated Canadian human rights lawyer urged MPs to be careful in their use of the term Islamophobia, saying “fear of some elements of Islam is mere prudence.”

    David Matas, an Order of Canada recipient who began his career as a clerk for the Chief Justice of Canada in the 1960s, delivered testimony Wednesday before the M-103 committee hearings in his capacity as senior counsel to B’nai Brith Canada.

    “Not every fear of Islam is Islamophobia,” Matas said to the House of Commons Heritage Committee, noting that anyone who is not afraid of the various radical Islamic terrorist outfits in the world is “foolhardy”.

    “Islamophobia does not appear in a vacuum,” Matas told MPs. “It grows out of a fear of incitement and acts of hatred and terrorism coming from elements of the Islamic community.”

    The Winnipeg-based lawyer, who ran for office years ago as a Liberal, recommended the committee take a “dual focus” approach on both those victimized by Islamophobia and those within the Islamic community inciting hatred and terrorism.

    Following Matas’ testimony, Shimon Fogel, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, urged the committee to aim towards a more precise definition of Islamophobia.

    M-103 was nominally designed to denounce, and study, all forms of racism and discrimination, but has faced extensive controversy for singling out Islam.

    Fogel pointed to a Toronto District School Board booklet’s definition of Islamophobia that included mere dislike of political Islam as worthy of censure.

    “This incident exposes significant problems with relying on ad hoc, inadequate definitions of Islamophobia,” said Fogel.

    On Monday, Muslim author and Sun columnist Farzana Hassan told the committee her concerns about how the term is used in other countries to suppress criticism from within the faith.
