The EU originally imposed travel bans and asset freezes on the Gaza-based Palestinian terrorist group, after the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda terror attacks on New York and Washington.
Hamas opposed the sanctions from the start, arguing that it is a legally elected government and therefore has the right to conduct military operations against Israel.

I am sure that Ian Kennedy, who writes earnestly in the Guardian about Charlie, doesn’t see it as arrogance. Indeed, I don’t accuse him of arrogance. Only of shortsightedness, and of being trapped intellectually in circumstances he can’t seem to think outside of – but also of assuming that he must be right in his thinking: that there must be no other way of seeing matters.
There are still Westerners who are not so intellectually trapped, although I don’t think there are that many left in Europe anymore. Most of them are in the United States now. It is here that intellectual liberty must not die, if it is to survive for mankind.

Economic growth needs to increase from its current sluggish rate. Growth was a mere 1.6% per year under Obama, compared to 3.5% under Reagan and 2.1% under George W. Bush. In the first quarter of 2017, it was only 1.2%.
To increase growth, we need to get rid of some of the unnecessary barriers to economic opportunity that have arisen in recent years, such as occupational licensing regulations that keep people from working. Occupational licensing has expanded from covering 5% of the workforce in the 1950s to 30% today.

The Chinese navy’s most advanced surveillance ship was detected in waters close to where U.S. and Australian forces are currently conducting joint military exercises.
The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Type 815 Dongdiao-class Auxiliary General Intelligence vessel was spotted operating off the northeastern coast of Australia, near Queensland, during the Talisman Sabre drills.
The Chinese spy ship was outside of Australia’s territorial waters but inside its exclusive economic zone, leading Australian defense officials to condemn the move as “unfriendly” and “provocative,” according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Saturday.
“Exercise Talisman Sabre is currently taking place in the vicinity. The vessel’s presence has not detracted from the exercise objectives,” Australian defense department officials told ABC. Over 30,000 troops are taking part in the ongoing exercises.

The statue comes to Manchester courtesy of Phil Collins. That’s not the singer who crooned, “You’ll Be In My Heart”, but the British artist who introduced East German instructors of Marxism-Leninism to Manchester with Marxism Today. Like the more famous Phil, he has his share of love songs, but it’s Marx and Engels, who are in his heart.
Manchester had no statues of Engels. Now thanks to Collins, it will.

The Trump Administration still hasn’t designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization as it was expected to do. Designation falls under the purview of Secretary of State Tillerson, who has chosen the Muslim Brotherhood and its backers in Qatar and Turkey over their Arab rivals.
Tillerson recently signaled his opposition to designating the Muslim Brotherhood in mid-June. He only has negative things to say about the idea.
His main point is that the Brotherhood’s political parties have representatives in governments like those in Bahrain and Turkey. That is irrelevant. If it was such a problem, Bahrain itself wouldn’t have banned the Brotherhood and the U.S. wouldn’t be dealing with the Lebanese government that has Hezbollah in it, which is designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
Tillerson also repeated the “non-violent” and “moderate” Muslim Brotherhood propaganda. He claimed that the Brotherhood’s political parties in governments “have become so by renouncing violence and terrorism.” That was false when the Obama Administration said it, and it is false now.
The disappointment in Tillerson’s position is made exponentially greater by the fact that now is an optimum time to designate the group.
The Arab world is putting unprecedented pressure on Qatar over its support of the Brotherhood and other jihadists in the Islamist swarm. Muslim foes of the Brotherhood are left wondering where the U.S.stands because Trump and Tillerson aren’t on the same page.

The Department of Homeland Security is continuing to use the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as an outreach partner, despite the Justice Department identifying it as a Muslim Brotherhood entity and designating it as an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorism-financing trial in American history.
CAIR’s Florida branch has published a letter from the DHS Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties thanking it for its years of collaboration. The author says it was written at the request of the Secretary of Homeland Security, General John Kelly. It is dated May 5 and can be seen at Pamela Geller’s website.
“The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appreciates your years of support and partnership with the Department’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, working on issues central to the DHS mission, including identifying civil rights and civil liberties concerns in the homeland security context,” it states.
The Justice Department designated CAIR as an unindicted co-conspirator during the trial of the Holy Land Foundation, a Muslim Brotherhood front that was financing Hamas until it was shut down. The Justice Department identified CAIR as an “entity” of the Muslim Brotherhood’s branch in America, specifically its “Palestine Committee” tasked with aiding the Hamas terrorist group.

The Islamist terrorist group Al Shabaab went house to house killing Christians in Kenya, International Christian Concern reported to Christian Today.
Three policemen were killed in a raid on Pandanguo village in Lamu county earlier this month. Terrorists later returned to the area to attack Christians in the villages of Jima and Poromoko.
“’If you were found to be a Christian you would be shot or slaughtered,” said Henry Divayo, the head pastor of a church sheltering Christians who fled the fighting.
“We are hosting more than 200 people in our church and we expect the number to increase as more families are evacuated from Boni Forest,” he added.
Food and security is currently being provided by the government and the Kenyan Red Cross, but more needs to be done.
“We need more well equipped police officers in churches, schools and hospitals,” he said.

Defend Europe Ship C-Star Detained And Crew Arrested In Cyprus Says Local Media
The ship has still to reach its intended destination.
The ship chartered by far-right group Defend Europe to hamper the rescue of refugees in the Mediterranean has been evacuated and its Captain and Deputy Captain arrested in Cyprus, according to local media.
The Kibris Postasi reports the pair were detained for allegedly forging false documents and the rest of the crew of the C-Star have been taken off and escorted to a local police station.
Satellite-tracking shows the vessel currently moored in Famagusta on the Turkish east coast of the Mediterranean island.
Defend Europe could not be contacted for comment but released a statement on their Facebook page accusing NGOs of bribing the ship’s Egyptian crew to apply for asylum in Cyprus.
The group has accused charities such as Save the Children of effectively acting as human traffickers by rescuing them from peril and chartered the C-Star to “document the doings of the NGOs, expose their collaboration with the human smugglers, and intervene if they do something illegal”.
Its intended destination is the port of Catania in Sicily where many of the NGOs operate from under the guidance of the Italian Coastguard.
The group’s latest tweet was picture of one such boat moored in the port.
But a sustained campaign by Hope Not Hate has meant every move by Defend Europe has been scrutinised.
The mission got off to a rocky start last week when it was briefly detained near to the Suez Canal.
The trip is being financed by a crowdfunding campaign which raised £118,000.
Save the Children has denied the claims made by such groups.
A spokesperson told HuffPost UK:
“Activities of far-right groups planning to disrupt search and rescue operations aimed at saving lives are deeply concerning.
“They ignore the moral and legal obligation to save lives at sea. Without NGOs and other search and rescue actors, many more lives, like the men, women and children we have rescued, would be lost. These activists wish to disrupt efforts to bring these people to safety.
“2016 was the deadliest year on record in the Mediterranean with more than 5,000 deaths at sea, and 2017 could be worse still. As things stand, the Mediterranean Sea is one of the largest unmarked mass graves in recent times. As a humanitarian organisation, our mission is to save lives and we go where children face the greatest risks.
“During 2016 Save the Children assisted in the rescue of 2,700 refugees and migrants. So far this year the total stands at almost 4,000, including more than 625 children.”

Arrest follows extensive briefings by HOPE not hate and other partners, and follows previous detention in Egypt.
Reports out of Northern Cyprus suggest that the C-Star, the former floating armoury being used by right-wing extremists to hinder humanitarian rescue vessels in the Mediterranean, has been stopped, its crew forced to leave and its captain arrested.
According to a report by the largest Turkish Cypriot newspaper, Kibris Postasi (Cyprus Post), the C-Star’s captain and his deputy were taken into custody – allegedly over false documents – and the ship was evacuated.
This follows briefings and representations made by HOPE not hate and other NGOs to the local authorities.
Misleading statements
The C-Star is currently anchored in the port of Famagusta, under jurisdiction of the northern Turkish half of Cyprus. Defend Europe’s vessel had been changing its crew in Cyprus and was preparing to set sail again today.
According to the Ankara Degil Lefkosa blog, Defend Europe told the port’s customs and immigration authority that the C-Star was “an EU ship aiming to rescue refugees from the sea”.
However, the ship is neither an “EU ship” – given it was previously flagged under the Djibouti, and probably now the Mongolian, flag – nor do its intentions involve “rescuing” refugees.
On the contrary, as HOPE not hate has highlighted in our extensive briefings, Defend Europe’s stated intention of returning refugees to north Africa is likely to violate legal obligations to refugees, potentially placing them in further danger.
The blog also notes that “it is questionable why an ‘EU’ ship is not using a European Union port in the RoC [Greek-speaking Republic of Cyprus] but prefers using the Famagusta port in the north”.
This aligns with a comment from the Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (CJRCC), which told HOPE not hate that it cannot stop the ship in Famagusta as it is part of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus and thus outside its jurisdiction.
(While the Republic of Cyprus is part of the EU, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus – which is recognised only by Turkey – is not.)
However, the CJRCC stated that if the C-Star went within the waters of the Republic of Cyprus, it would do what it could to stop it.
Disturbing comments
As Buzzfeed News recently revealed, one of Defend Europe’s most ardent champions, alt-light journalist Lauren Southern (who accompanied the group’s first attempt to harass a rescue ship in May) has spoken of using “nets to potentially stop the motors of smaller boats” travelling towards Libya.

Queste pratiche scandalose confermano che le Ong sono pronte a fare qualsiasi cosa per impedirci di rivelare la situazione nel Mediterraneo”. USA – Man sentenced to 120 days in prison after fish cut in half
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) – A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 120 days in prison after police say he cut a pet fish in half during a domestic dispute.
The Bristol Press reports 33-year-old Juan Vega pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of breach of peace. As part of his plea deal with the state prosecutor, one count of cruelty to animals was dropped.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance at a Bristol home April 27. Police say Vega damaged property at the unnamed victim’s home after an argument, and the victim’s 9-year-old son told officers the family’s pet beta fish was killed.
The prosecutor says the fish killing “really did traumatize” the child.

ITALY – MILAN – Police detain dozens of migrants in Milan train station
MILAN — Italian police detained several dozen people Wednesday outside Milan’s main train station as the city deals with a new wave of migrants.
Police said Wednesday they detained 36 people in a move aimed at combating increasing criminality around the heavily used station.
The blitz comes a week after a Guinean immigrant stabbed a police officer in front of the station and weeks after a 20-year-old Italian-Tunisian man who had been previously arrested on drug charges pulled a knife on two soldiers and a police officer inside the station. The Guinean was later expelled.
Italian cities are under renewed pressure with the arrival of tens of thousands of migrants in the south and ever-tighter border controls in the north. Milan’s Central Station has continued to be a gathering spot, despite efforts to move migrants to shelters and other locations in the city.
Milan’s official for security, Carmela Rozza, said officials are committed to ensuring safety for commuters and tourists passing through the station and to transform the piazza outside the station into a place where people can gather for events.
“Everything that we have done so far has not been sufficient. We will continue until it is clear to the delinquents that the Central Station is not a place to loiter,” Rozza told reporters following the police action.

Police detained 36 men in Duca d’Aosta square in front of Milan’s central railway station, Wednesday, reportedly on drug trafficking charges and is in response to increased crime in the area. During the operation, the area was sealed off with no access to the underground station.
The footage shows the men being taken away by police officers and put on buses. The detained were further brought to the central police station for questioning.
