South Korea to freeze deployment of THAAD missile defense pending environmental probe

SEOUL – South Korea will suspend any further deployment of a controversial U.S. missile defense system until an environmental impact assessment ordered by new President Moon Jae-in is finished, his office said Wednesday.

Seoul agreed last year under Moon’s ousted predecessor Park Geun-hye to deploy the powerful missile intercept system to guard against threats from nuclear-armed North Korea despite angry opposition from Beijing, which views it as a threat to its own military capabilities.

(One wonders what the environmental impact might be of ten or fifteen South Korean naval vessels sinking off the Korean peninsula. Or a smoking ruin of a South Korean city with nuclear fallout from primitive and dirty weapons.)

  3. The South Korean President has a spine like a wet noodle, he is going to delay and stall until it is too late and then blame the US for his failure.

    China see the Dems attacking President Trump and is pushing knowing that the politics of the moment make it hard for President Trump to order an attack on North Korea. The past 8 years have shown the South Koreans, Japan, The Philippines and Taiwan that the Dems don’t care about them and will sell them out at a moments notice. These nations are also watching the attacks on President Trump and are afraid that the Dems will manage to remove him from office leaving them at the mercy of the unknown VP Pence. All of this uncertainty is driven by the Dems quest for total political power in the US and is leading us down the path to a major war that will have to be fought overseas while we are fighting a guerilla war inside the US.

    This mess is going to leave Europe to the tender mercies of the treasonous Socialist politicians and the Islamic Invaders. This is why the coming war is going to last for a long time.

        Hispania was a Roman colony from a couple hundred years before the birth of Christ. The religions were all over the map, just like the rest of the barbarian lands that comprised the Roman Empire.

        Christianity eventually came to dominate most of the Iberian peninsula, but there was no sense of “nationhood” or “Christendom”. That came much later, after the “Reconquista” was all but complete at the end of the 15th century. The elaboration of the myth was a deliberate, political nation-building exercise.

        The Moorish invasion was, in fact, a series of invasions over hundreds of years. Wild tribes would pour in from North Africa, settle down, and get civilized. Then another wave of “fundamentalist” head-choppers would sweep in and threaten “moderate Muslims” every bit as much as Christians. The resident peoples allied with neighboring domains irrespective religious persuasion.

        It’s a long story. Too much revised history, layers on layers of junk. A political weathervane.

      I hate to say it Richard but, I told you so.

      This is a no win situation. S Korea is being pushed by China and it isn’t certain where they will land. If they won’t allow the US to defend them then I’m not sure what they think will happen. An “environmental report”? Are you kidding me?

      S Korea is a first world country with a vibrant economy and a very educated populace. The United States has guaranteed that. As with so many other countries, S Korea takes it for granted that the US will bear the burden of defense. And, as a petulant child, feels free to mock us at the same time. Do they not realize that half their major city Seoul would be wiped out in a matter of minutes if the NORKOS decided to attack?

      This is not conjecture, this is fact. Mr. Moon is playing a game he is bound to lose.

      All I can say is I am so happy that my son left there. He was paid a lot of money and liked a lot of things about the country but was sick of the terrible weather and the small ex-pat community of which he was a member.

        You would think so. Let’s face it, those THAAD rocket exhaust plumes might knock down a couple of dandelions as they are launched to intercept North Korea’s SRBMs, and we can’t have that now, can we?!?

        It is important to remember that South Korea’s Chaebol (think Japanese Zaibatsu), has some $52 billion invested in Red China. Right there is a major pressure point that Beijing can apply to Seoul.

        At least Trump has forced Red China’s hand in terms of revealing that it is engaging in just another episode of the usual pi ying. This is rather important because it places all of Communist China’s other moves (e.g., South China Sea islands) in a more sinister cast than they had been attempting to project.

        Even if South Korea’s leadership is dumber than a bag of hair, the international community is getting a solid glimpse of how and why North Korea continues to destabilize the East Asian quadrant, courtesy of Beijing’s support.

            What few people realize is that Korean reunification simply is not on the map (so to speak). The parsimonious Chaebol is having none of it and without their direct and enthusiastic cooperation the peninsula will remain divided for many decades to come.

            Clearly, the global community is willing to cower before Psycho Fat Boy’s throne and ignore this world’s most profound human rights abuses in order to avoid making some truly difficult choices.

            This is why I am morally obliged to admire Trump’s willingness to put the squeeze on both Red China and its NORKie lap dog. Without that one meaningful gesture, this gruesome farce would continue unfettered and unabated.

      • South Korea has a large and professional military that is (most of the time) chomping at the bit to be allowed to move north and reunify Korea. Their military and most of the civilians know what will happen, this is why the current President is turning chicken. They are not sure that the US air power combined with the South Korean air power will be able to suppress the Northern artillery. It can suppress a lot of the artillery and destroy it within a week or two but during the time it takes to destroy the artillery Seoul will take a lot of damage.

        What they are not figuring into the equation is what will happen when China allows Kim to attack with nukes nad there is a very limited number of anti missile weapons. As with the run up to WWII the peace at any cost crowd is saying that if we don’t build defenses the enemy won’t attack. This type of mentality refuses to learn from history and are their actions are the cause of many wars. We saw the same thinking during the Cold War with the Mutually ASsured Destruction doctrine that the Soviets never bought into, they continued to build radiation shelters for there people while we destroyed ours. For all I know Russia is still building and updating their shelters.

      • In a way I can sympathize with Moon, Korea and Japan to a much lesser extent will suffer the major damage in the coming war and at least initially the ground combat will be done by Korean personal. Korea will to a very large extent be destroyed, bombed back into the stone age, by the war and it will be Japan and the US that does the rebuilding. What Moon is doing is trying to buy off China by groveling, cringing and anything else Moon things will work. The problem with this approach is that it insures that when the war does happen the devastation will be much worse.

        • I keep harping on it, but Chinese money has a loud voice. South Korean politicians and business fat-cats churn out anti-American propaganda and snare the sheeple.

  4. Before, even before we turn to face the subject of Islam incompatibility with the rest of humankind. There is a schism a subject so black and white that it boggles the mind on how we are going to stand outside it’s realm, the bubble of lock step to the abyss that lemmings perceive as their DNA coded right to periodically plunge in mass. Liberal, whatever vs conservative in it’s various hues. Something seeks our destruction as a planet and we immediately, as a species, first face the other way to seek consensus between Liberal and Conservative that there is, in fact, a threat at all that is at hyper speed demanding capitulation of us or it’s eradication form earth. One or the other, Now. Is this the old Cain and Able or Apple in Garden. Islam is certainly not bothered by these discussions. Rise up at command, in mass, millions, from the kneeling position, draw knives, run hollering down the street looking for the offending Infidel. In Mass, mindless, worldwide and you get a box of raisins for doing a good job. South K. thinks N.K. will play nice if you kick the U.S. out? We need to cull the earth’s population but not by atom bombs. And not by one world governments Ideology of Mega Cities.

    Under “Sunshine 2.0,” as the South Korean media have dubbed his plans, Moon wants to reopen an industrial complex where North and South Koreans work together, just north of the de-militarized zone. He says he’s open to meeting the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. And he says he’d like to re-evaluate a deal the previous, conservative president Park Geun-hye signed with the U.S., to install a missile defense system in South Korea.

    Moon wrote in his autobiography that South Korea should “learn how to say no” to its historic ally, America.

    “So a lot of people are worried [that] if Moon Jae-in is elected, we’re going to have rocky relations with the United States,” says Kim, the political scientist at Asan. “First of all, President Trump is not really popular in Korea. And second of all, there’s a really thorny issue: the THAAD deployment.”

    THAAD is an acronym for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, the name of the U.S. defense shield designed to shoot down North Korean missiles. It was declared operational this week.

    Moon says that rather than arming up, he wants to negotiate with the North. One of his reasons is very personal: His parents are from there. They were rescued by a U.S. warship in 1950, after the Korean War broke out. Moon was born in the South, just before the war ended.

    “Critics call him a red — a communist — because his approach to North Korea is dovish,” says Tae Ki-soo, Moon’s biographer. “Moon treats North Koreans as human beings, because of his parents.”

    But defectors from North Korea, whose escape stories pull at South Koreans’ heartstrings, are some of Moon’s most vocal critics. Some 3,000 North Korean defectors vowed this week to leave South Korea if Moon is elected president.

    In the banquet room of a high-rise hotel in Seoul last week, North Korean escapees sang the South Korean national anthem, and pledged allegiance to the South’s flag. Representatives from most of South Korea’s political parties gave speeches, wooing the defectors’ votes ahead of Tuesday’s election. The conservatives parties got hearty applause, but the response to liberals was barely lukewarm.

    “Moon Jae-in should not be president,” says Lee Yu-mi, one of the banquet’s attendees, who defected from North Korea 11 years ago. “He’s too soft. He’ll give money to the North, which will strengthen the regime there.”

  6. Talking to Korean students about North Korea, they are all in favour of unification. Catch is they don’t want to pay for it. Using the example of Germany, the infrastructure upgrades would cost at lost a third of today’s average South Korean salary.

    There is also the very real shanties, Sao Paola style that could spring up from North Koreans on the mountains surrounding South Korean cities. South Koreans are proud of what they have accomplished, they don’t want to spoil it by quick unification with the north.
