  1. OK – perhaps conspiracy theory area.

But, given that several days ago, an intern who attended Seth Rich in the ER stated that his wounds were non-life-threatening, but that all med staff except attending MD and one nurse were permitted to enter Seth Rich’s room following the initial emergency surgery, this 4chan/pol/ anon post adds a sinister twist to the whole story:

MANCHESTER, England — Salman Abedi, the 22-year-old British man believed to have killed 22 people in a suicide-bomb attack, had ties to al Qaeda and had received terrorist training abroad, a U.S. intelligence official told NBC News on Tuesday as the United Kingdom raised its terrorist threat level to the highest category.

The U.S. intelligence official, who has direct knowledge of the investigation, said Abedi, whose family is of Libyan descent, was identified by a bank card found in his pocket at the scene of the explosion after an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena. The identification was confirmed by facial recognition technology, the official said.

  3. Not sure what to make of this:

Following Sean Hannity’s embarrassing buckling on coverage of the Seth Rich case, sources at Fox News told Big League Politics that he was pressured to relent by one of the Murdochs.

“One of the Murdoch sons was all up his ass over this,” another insider told Big League Politics.

Prior to airtime, Hannity had tweeted, “huge announcement tonight about Seth Rich, Trump/Russian Collusion corrupt media, the liberal effort to silence me. And my future at Fox!”

But as we reported, it turned out that his “huge announcement” was that he was caving into pressure and would no longer be covering the story “at this time.”

While his statements on the show indicated that he was cowering to Media Matters, who had called for a boycott of his advertisers — it seems that one of Murdoch’s sons was actually behind it.

  4. Man pleads guilty to ‘marrying’ 14-year-old girl amid spate of underage girls forced to become child brides (independent, May 23, 2017)
    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/14-year-old-melbourne-mosque-girl-forced-marriage-man-20-years-older-a7750061.html

“A 14-year-old girl was forced to marry a man 20 years her senior in a Melbourne mosque, a court has heard.

In video footage of the ceremony, the young teenager can be seen dressed in a light-blue headscarf in a tiny room hidden at the back of the suburban mosque as she waits in silence to be married to a man she has reportedly known for just a few days.

The ceremony took place last September but the film has come to light amid a dramatic increase in reports of forced underage marriages in Australia in the past few years.

Mohammad Shakir, now 35, sobbed in court as he pleaded guilty to going through a formal ceremony of marriage with a person not of marriageable age at Noble Park mosque last September.

Australian network 7 News obtained the footage and reported the young bride was handed over for marriage by her parents in return for a AUD$1480 gold necklace.

The child’s mother watches on as the ceremony takes place, with the man conducting the ceremony asking the girl: “Do you take (this man) to live together and live according to Islam?”

    “Yes,” she responds quietly.

“As a wife, you have a duty to obey your husband,” the Imam tells the child bride after the ceremony as the groom signs papers.

The footage was found on the groom’s phone by police who arrested both him and the Imam, named as Ibrahim Omerdic, who performed the ceremony when he was leader of the Bosnian Islamic Society and Noble Park Mosque.

As part of groom Shakir’s plea, two charges against him that he had sex with the girl after the ceremony were withdrawn.

Shakir, who spent six months in prison awaiting the court case, shed tears after entering his plea during what was to be a pre-trial committal hearing, according to Australian media. The case was adjourned until September.

He was helped in court by a Burmese interpreter.

The teenager, who was in court, also wiped tears from her eyes.

Mr Omerdic, 61, also appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court charged with conduct that caused a minor to enter into a forced marriage.

He was sacked after he was arrested in November and his marriage licence was revoked. His barrister said the defence will contest whether there was a marriage and whether there was any intention to perform a marriage ceremony.

Between December 2014 and January 2017, there were reports of 57 child brides in Australia, where the legal age for marriage is 18. The marriage of a person aged 16 or 17 where the other person is aged 18 or over is considered only in “unusual and exceptional” circumstances.

Of these children, 34 were aged 16-17, 12 were aged 14-15, seven were aged between ten and 13, while four were under the age of 10. The majority of these offences took place in the Sydney area.

In the past two years, the child welfare group, Plan International Australia, identified another 250 cases of underage marriage across Australia.

Because the offence of underage marriage was not criminalised until 2013, police cannot prosecute for instances which took place before then. However, the number of cases being investigated by Federal Police doubled in the past year to 69.

The penalty for forcing a child into marriage is up to 25 years in prison. Such unions have no validity in law and are mostly kept hidden.

Pru Goward, the Australian Government’s Family and Community Services minister, told the Australian network: “It is deeply disturbing to think of little girls, pre-puberty, being considered for marriage and for people to be organising that marriage.”

Laura Vidal of The Freedom Partnership, which works to end modern slavery in Australia, said: “The long-term impacts of people being forced into marriage can be quite serious, including forced or unwanted pregnancies (and) withdrawal from education.”

The Board of Imams in Victoria issued a statement against forced and child marriages.

“Underage marriages are illegal in Australia. As Australian Muslims, we are required to observe and respect the laws of Australia,” the statement said.

The statement added that imams should meet both the bride and groom in person before the marriage ceremony to ensure they are of marriageable age and both consented.

Forced marriage including underage marriage is also on the rise in the UK according to figures released jointly by the Home and Foreign Office.

Statistics revealed a 17 per cent increase in the number of children believed to have been forced into marriage, usually with a much older man, between 2015 and 2016.

In 2016, the Forced Marriages Unit in the UK gave advice or support related to possible forced marriages in 1,428 cases, with 26 per cent of these involving victims below the age of 18.

The report from the Government stated that the FMU had handled cases relating to 69 different countries, with the six highest volume countries being Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Somalia, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia.”

  8. Hack, fake story expose real tensions between Qatar, Gulf (abcnews, May 24, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/qatar-state-news-website-hacked-fake-article-published-47598847

“Qatar said hackers allegedly broke into the website of its state-run news agency on Wednesday and published a fake story quoting the ruling emir making controversial comments. The purported fake story prompted Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to respond by blocking Qatari media, including broadcaster Al-Jazeera.

The alleged hack reflects the tensions and suspicions still running deep between Qatar, whose conservative rulers have strong ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, and the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which have outlawed the group.

The hack happened early on Wednesday morning and hours later, the website of the Qatar News Agency was not accessible.

The fake article quoted Qatar emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani as calling Iran an “Islamic power” and saying Qatar’s relations with Israel were “good” during a military ceremony.

The Qatari state television’s nightly newscast on Tuesday showed clips of Sheikh Tamim at the ceremony with the anchor not mentioning the comments, though a scrolling ticker at the bottom of the screen had the alleged fake remarks. They included calling Hamas “the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people,” as well as saying Qatar had “strong relations” with Iran and the United States.

“Iran represents a regional and Islamic power that cannot be ignored and it is unwise to face up against it,” the ticker read at one point. “It is a big power in the stabilization of the region.”

The hackers also purportedly took over the news agency’s Twitter feed and posted alleged quotes from Qatar’s foreign minister alleging a plot against the country by other Arab nations. It said the small, gas-rich nation had ordered its ambassadors from Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates withdrawn over the plot. The tweets were later deleted.

Sheikh Saif Bin Ahmed Al Thani, the director of the Qatar’s government communications office, issued a statement saying authorities had launched an investigation…”

The family of slain DNC staffer Seth Rich is calling on the Washington, D.C. police department to go public with details of the murder investigation, after ten months of near-silence from law enforcement officials and as theories continue to spread about the mysterious circumstances of Rich’s shooting death last July.

‘The family has full confidence in the Metropolitan Police Department’s ability to proceed with this investigation. But given the large amount of hearsay and conspiracy theories surrounding the case, maybe it’s time for the police department to be more forthcoming with information regarding the investigation and to update the people of Washington, D.C. on the status of the case,’ said Brad Bauman, a spokesperson for Rich’s family.

Bauman’s statement follows renewed interest in the murder investigation, amid claims that Rich may have been the source who leaked thousands of DNC emails to Wikileaks last summer.

LONDON (AP) — France’s interior minister says that the suicide bomber who targeted Manchester is believed to have traveled to Syria and had “proven” links with the Islamic State group.
Gerard Collomb said on BFM television Wednesday that British and French intelligence have information that British-born attacker Salman Abedi had been to Syria. He did not provide details, and said it is unclear whether Abedi was part of a larger network of attackers.

Collomb, who spoke with British Prime Minister Theresa May after the attack at an Ariana Grande concert that killed 22, said the two countries should continue cooperating closely on counterterrorism efforts despite Britain’s pending exit from the European Union.

    • Manchester Attack: Home Secretary Amber Rudd condemns US for leaks of shared British intelligence

Confidential details appeared in the US media apparently leaked by US intelligence

The Home Secretary has criticised the US after confidential details about the Manchester Arena attack appeared to have been leaked to the media by American intelligence officers.

Amber Rudd said US conduct had been “irritating” and said she had made clear to her American counterparts that such leaks “shouldn’t happen again”.

The episode comes just a week after US president Donald Trump defended his right to leak classified intelligence to other countries’ leaders. Mr Trump has also criticised leaking from the US intelligence establishment.

Asked on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme about the US leaks, Ms Rudd said: “The British police have been very clear that they want to control the flow of information in order to protect operational integrity, the element of surprise.

“So it is irritating when it gets released from other sources and I have been very clear with our friends that that should not happen again.”

Asked whether US conduct had compromised the investigation into the Manchester Arena attack, she said: “I wouldn’t go that far but I can say they are perfectly clear about the situation and that it shouldn’t happen again.”

A number of details about the Manchester Arena attack appeared in the US media – most notably on networks NBC and CBS – before British police had publicly released them to the UK media.

The initial death tolls, the fact the attack appeared to be a suicide bombing, and the name of the attacker, were all released through US outlets, apparently via leaky US intelligence sources.

Intelligence is shared between Britain, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand under the UKUSA agreement, the so called “Five Eyes” programme.

The latest leaks come after Theresa May personally expressed confidence in the US-UK intelligence sharing programme. Questioned about Mr Trump’s apparent leaking to the Kremlin, Ms May had said: “We continue to work with the United States and we continue to share intelligence with the United States, as we do with others around the world.”

‘Shouldn’t happen again’: UK home secretary chides US for leaking info on Manchester attack to press

    • Manchester bomber Salman Abedi’s father and brothers arrested, linked to ISIS, Al Qaeda

Manchester bomber Salman Abedi apparently wasn’t the only member of his family to harbor extremist views as Libyan officials arrested the suicide bomber’s father and two brothers, and uncovered what investigators called a plot for a new attack.

Hashim Abedi, who was born in 1997, was arrested in Tripoli on Wednesday evening by the Libyan counter-terrorism force Rada on suspicion of links to the Islamic State, and was planning a new attack on the Libyan capital, a government spokesman told Reuters on Wednesday.

The father of the bomber was arrested in Tripoli on Wednesday, a Libyan security spokesman told The Associated Press. The father, Ramadan Abedi, had said another brother of the bomber, Ismail, was arrested Tuesday.

What’s more, two U.S. defense officials confirmed to Fox News Salman Abedi spent three weeks in Libya prior to the Manchester bombing, retuning to England just days before the Ariana Grande concert where he launched his attack Monday.

Salman’s mother, Samia Tabbal, is belived to have returned to Libya, while the Facebook profile for his sister, Jomana, suggests that she still lives in Manchester. The mother was described in an article by The Guardian as a “very nice woman” who taught a friend’s daughter to read the Quran.

Earlier Abdel-Basit Haroun, a former security official in Libya, told The Associated Press Wednesday that he personally knew Ramadan Abedi, the father of Salman Abedi, and that the elder Abedi was a member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group in the 1990s. The group had links to Al Qaeda.

Although the LIFG disbanded, Haroun said the father belongs to the Salafi Jihadi movement, the most extreme sect of Salafism and from which Al Qaeda and the Islamic State group hail. Haroun added that Abedi, also known as Abu Ismail, had returned to the Libyan capital of Tripoli.

The LIFG was founded in 1995, and was involved in attempts to assassinate then-Libyan leader Moammar Qaddafi as well as violent clashes with Benghazi police. In 2002, a senior LIFG commander, Anas al-Libi, who also was a companion of Al Qaeda founder Usama bin Laden, was detained by U.S. forces for his role in the 1998 bombings of the American Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which killed more than 200 people.

The group also was involved in the bloody riots at Abu Salim prison near Benghazi in 1996 that killed more than 1,200 prisoners.

The LIFG reportedly teamed up with the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group in planning the May 2003 bombings in Casablanca, Morocco, that killed more than 40 people and injured more than 100. The group also has been linked to the 2004 attacks in Madrid that killed 194 people.

We don’t believe in killing innocents. This is not us.

      – Ramadan Abedi, the father of Manchester bombing suspect Salman Abedi
Ramadan Abedi escaped Tripoli in 1993 after Qaddafi’s security authorities issued an arrest warrant and eventually sought political asylum in Britain. The elder Abedi first immigrated to London before settling in the Whalley Range area of south Manchester, where they had lived for at least a decade.

The neighborhood is known to be home to a number of former LIFG members living in exile, including Abd al-Baset Azzouz – an expert bomb-maker who left Manchester to run a terrorist network in eastern Libya overseen by Ayman al-Zawahiri, Usama bin Laden’s successor as leader of Al Qaeda. Media in the United Kingdom reported in 2014 that Azzouz had 200 to 300 militants under his control.

In a telephone interview from Tripoli, Ramadan Abedi — who is now the administrative manager of the Central Security force in the Libyan capital — denied to The Associated Press that his son is linked to any militant group or the suicide bombing that killed 22 people.

The father of the alleged terrorist said that his family “aren’t the ones who blow up ourselves among innocents.” [ ...but only amongst unclean kuffars....??? ]

“We don’t believe in killing innocents. This is not us,” he said.

Abedi added that he spoke to his son five days ago and he was getting ready to travel from Saudi Arabia to Libya to spend the holy month of Ramadan with family and sounded “normal.” He said that his son visited Libya a month-and-a -half ago.

The Abedi family had apparently become concerned about Salman’s growing radicalization and a friend close to the family told The New York Times that his parents had seized the suspected bomber’s British passport. They had returned it when he said that he wanted to return to the holy Saudi city of Mecca, but instead flew back to the Manchester area.

While early reports were unclear whether the 22-year-old Abedi had acted as a lone wolf or in coordination with others, Manchester’s police chief told reporters on Wednesday that it is clear “this is a network we are investigating” as he gave an update on the probe into the bomb attack.

Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said Wednesday that police are carrying out extensive searches across Manchester as part of their probe.

Hopkins declined to comment on whether police have found the alleged maker of the explosive device used in Monday night’s attack.

Muslims currently living in Dar al-Kufr be reminded that the blood of the disbelievers is halal, and killing them is a form of worship to allah, the lord, king , and god of mankind. This includes the bussinessman riding to work in a taxicab, the yound adults ( post-pubescent “children” ) engaged in sports activities in the park, and the old man waiting in line to buy a sandwich. Indeed, even the blood of the kafir strett vendor selling flowers to those passing by is halal to shed- and striking terror into the hearts of all disbelievers is a Muslim’s duty. There is no shar’i requirement to target soldiers and policemen nor judges and politicians, but all kuffar who are not under the convenant of dhimmah are fair game. How can disbelievers ever dream of safety and security while Muslims suffer anywhere in the world and while the rule of allah is mockingly replaced by manmade monstrosities of democracy

  18. BBC Radio 5 Live goes off air as studio is evacuated

Listeners heard evacuation alert in background of broadcast and a pre-recorded tape began to play instead of the live show

BBC Radio 5 Live went off air today and switched to emergency pre-recorded audio when the studio was evacuated mid-way through a live broadcast.

Confused and concerned listeners took to Twitter on Wednesday just before 2pm to ask what was happening after hearing an evacuation alert in the background of Afternoon Edition.

The two presenters had been in the middle of an interview when it suddenly cut out and instead listeners heard the message: “You’re listening to BBC Radio 5 Live. We’re sorry we can’t bring you the scheduled programme at the moment.

  19. With threat ‘very high’, France set to extend state of emergency

Paris (AFP) – President Emmanuel Macron wants a sixth extension of France’s state of emergency since the Paris attacks of November 2015, his prime minister said Wednesday, adding that the terror threat “remains very high”.

The new president, elected on May 7, also wants legislation to boost the powers of the security forces, Edouard Philippe said, two days after the Manchester concert suicide bombing that claimed 22 lives.

“France and the United Kingdom are fighting the same enemy,” Philippe said after a meeting of his defence council. “The terrorist threat remains, in Europe, in our two countries, at a very high level.”

Macron is seeking a new extension of the state of emergency, which expires on July 15 after being extended “to preserve our democracy” — referring to France’s just-ended presidential election and upcoming legislative polls.

The president’s office earlier said he was seeking to extend the state of emergency until November 1.

  20. Manchester bomber had ‘proven’ links to Islamic State: French minister

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – The Manchester suicide bomber who killed 22 people at a concert venue packed with children had recently returned from Libya, a British minister said, and her French counterpart said he had links with Islamic State and had probably visited Syria too.

Interior minister Amber Rudd said Salman Abedi had likely not acted alone, and troops were being deployed to key sites across Britain to help prevent further attacks after the official threat level was raised to “critical”.

Police made three new arrests in South Manchester on Wednesday in connection with the concert bombing. They provided no details on the individuals held.

Rudd said up to 3,800 soldiers could be deployed on Britain’s streets, taking on guard duties at places like Buckingham Palace and Downing Street to free up police to focus on patrols and investigation. An initial deployment of 984 had been ordered, initially in London, then elsewhere.

The Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace, a draw for tourists, was canceled because it requires support from police officers, which authorities decided was not a good use of police resources given the threat level.

  21. John Brennan, James Comey, and the amazing evidence-free ‘Trump-Russia’ ‘investigation’ thing
    By J.E. Dyer May 23, 2017

Another oppo event came and went on Capitol Hill today, as former CIA Director John Brennan spoke in a House Intelligence Committee hearing on the theme of “Russia and mumble mumble something Trump.”

The FBI has reportedly been working on this theme since July 2016, doing Zeus only knows what (seriously; no one has clarified what the FBI is doing with its counterintelligence investigation), and we’re still at the “Russia and mumble mumble something Trump” stage. But let that pass.

This morning we got it straight from Mr. Brennan.

    http://libertyunyielding.com/2017/05/23/john-brennan-james-comey-amazing-evidence-free-trump-russia-investigation-thing/

    • She does a real good job of making Comey and Brennan look like partisan liars, they admit they have no evidence to support their conclusion which seems to be based more on wishful thinking then any thing else. This shows how much Obama and the Dems managed to politicize the intelligence and law enforcement groups of the US Government. I am worried about how we can clean out the Partisan political appointees without turning these groups into political partisans for the Conservatives.

    • BBC NEWS – Ex-CIA boss suspicious of Trump team ‘contacts’ with Russians –

    • BREITBART – Ex-CIA Director John Brennan Refuses To Say Whether Russia Holds Damaging Info On Hillary Clinton

[…]This prompted Rep. Tom Rooney (R-Fla) to ask Brennan whether he found in his review of the evidence that there was “more damaging evidence of Secretary Clinton that was not revealed?”

“And if it wasn’t revealed, what does that say about their – the Russian ability to be actually rooting for her to win?” he asked.

Brennan replied: “Well, yeah, we can talk about it in closed, but, as I said, I think that they anticipated that Secretary Clinton was going to win the election. And so they – I believe that they tried to damage and bloody her before the election.”

“But also, I would have anticipated that, had she been elected, that their efforts to denigrate her and hurt her would have continued during her presidency. So if they did collect more information about her that they did not release, I think they were probably husbanding it for a – another day.”

Brennan was talking hypothetically about the Russians “husbanding” information on Clinton for “another day” if they did indeed collect any such information.

Later in the hearing, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) returned to the matter and asked for a clear “yes or no” answer as to whether the CIA had knowledge of the Russians holding damaging information on Clinton.

Gowdy asked: “Congressman Rooney and you were discussing, generally, the motive and I think it is – let’s just assume it’s a given that the Russians did not like Secretary Clinton – did not like President Obama, for that matter – and desired negative things for her.

“But they also thought she was going to win. Was it your testimony that all of the information stolen was not publicly disseminated?”

      The exchange continued:

BRENNAN: No. I said, if they had collected additional information, as I think was implied, that the – the effort to try to further hurt her if she became president – that information – any type of derogatory information about her could have been husbanded for post-election period.

GOWDY: All right. But do you know if negative information was husbanded, to use your word, and not disseminated?

BRENNAN: Again, I – I – I think that would be inappropriate to talk about in an – in an open session like this.

GOWDY: Is it inappropriate to both – I get not asking you about the nature of it. Is it inappropriate to answer yes or no, whether or not that information was husbanded but not disseminated?

BRENNAN: My – my request would be that we could talk about that in closed session.

GOWDY: OK. I’ll honor your request, and we’ll talk about that in a little bit.

This is not the first discussion about the Russians holding potentially damaging information on Clinton or her camp.[…]

    • Bloomberg – Trump-Russia Question Fade

Proving collusion is far more important to the nation’s long-term interests than Trump’s attempts to shake off the investigation.

The Trump-Russia scandal has changed. The latest leaks are all about President Donald Trump’s acute discomfort with the investigation into his 2016 campaign’s possible collusion with the Kremlin, not about the collusion itself. This is a dangerous bit of bait-and-switch: Soon, it may not even matter whether or not Trump or his associates accepted help from President Vladimir Putin or those working for him.

In 2002, a poll revealed that 65 percent of Americans didn’t remember enough about Watergate to tell the basic facts to another person. At the same time, 63 percent said Richard Nixon’s actions were serious enough to warrant his resignation. Almost two-thirds of the American public would be unable to say exactly what Nixon did, whether he knew in advance about the Democratic National Committee burglary (there’s no evidence that he did) and what he undertook to cover it up (schemed to replace the investigating agency and hide evidence).

In today’s fast-moving world, it won’t take 40 years to get there. No one will care about the major differences between Trump-Russia and Watergate if the basic plot appears similar — and now, it does.

All the recent leaks are about Trump trying to shake off the Russia investigation. There is the “Comey memo” telling of Trump’s suggestion that the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director drop the investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. There’s Trump’s admission that he was thinking about the “Russia thing” when he fired James Comey. There’s his alleged remark to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that firing “nut job” Comey eased the Russia-related pressure on him (Lavrov denies Trump said this). And there are the latest reports that Trump attempted to get Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers to say publicly that they had no evidence of Trump-Russia collusion.

That’s suddenly sounding like an attempted cover-up, Nixon-style. Next thing we know, special counsel Robert Mueller will be demanding that the White House release recordings of Trump’s conversations about the scandal (if they exist, as Trump has hinted), the way Archibald Cox once did with Nixon. And perhaps, who knows, there will be enough evidence to charge Trump with obstruction of justice tied to his trademark impatience or something far more serious.

But where is Russia in this anymore? As a Russian opposed to the current Kremlin regime but interested in the long-term relationship between the U.S. and my country, I don’t much care what Trump told members of the U.S. intelligence community and how they replied. Perhaps that’s obstruction of justice and perhaps it isn’t; we already know that Trump’s handling of the situation is clumsy in the extreme. Instead of clearing the way for the investigation, he has been criticizing it, and that makes him look guilty. But I’m far more interested in the original subject of the investigation: Did the Trump campaign actually get help from Moscow, and if so, did they accept it wittingly or unwittingly?

Answering these questions would mean some specific steps on the part of a politically impartial investigation.

It would need to establish who hacked the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s campaign officials. I know the U.S. intelligence community thinks it was “the Russians,” but that’s only an opinion, although, we’re told, based on some non-public evidence. In the Watergate case, the burglars were exposed.

It would need to establish who handed over the stolen data to WikiLeaks.

It would need to figure out whether anyone on the Trump campaign was in contact with the hackers, the leakers or those who controlled them; in the latter case, it would also mean establishing a connection between the controllers and the hackers and leakers. The Watergate investigation established a connection between the Nixon campaign and the burglary.

And if it succeeded at that — and two years passed between the arrest of the plumbers and Nixon’s impeachment — it would need to find out whether Trump knew about the contacts and authorized them or hid them. The Watergate investigation never proved that Nixon had prior knowledge of the plot.

None of the many revelations so far have addressed any of these issues that must be at the core of a serious investigation. Sally Yates, the acting Attorney General fired by Trump for refusing to defend the travel ban, testified to senators that “we believed that Gen. Flynn” — a top campaign adviser and Trump’s first national security adviser — “was compromised” with the Russians. There are stories about Trump’s former campaign chief Paul Manafort’s work for deposed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his failed business venture with Russian aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska; about a Russian state bank helping to fund a Trump-branded project; about a man named Carter Page, whom no one can remember in Moscow or Washington, but who apparently knows some suspicious Russians. But there are no leaks or journalistic investigations that would actually indicate collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin in releasing material that may have helped Trump win the election.

On Tuesday, former CIA Director John Brennan testified to the House Intelligence Committee that he had concerns, without citing specific evidence. “I encountered and am aware of information and intelligence that revealed contacts and interactions between Russian officials and U.S. persons involved in the Trump campaign that I was concerned about,” he said.

That’s the really important matter to investigate. If Putin and Trump — or people working for them — actually made a deal to swing a U.S. election, that calls for impeachment and treason charges. If Trump was complicit in such a plot, he shouldn’t be president. If he tried and failed to shut down investigations that later revealed collusion by his underlings without his knowledge, it’s a more complicated matter.

For now, the public case against Trump appears to be about his clumsy interactions with U.S. intelligence officials, not about any evidence of collusion. This threatens to further chill delicate and extremely important relations between the U.S. and Russia for petty political reasons. I also fear that Russian people will be stigmatized in the U.S. regardless of whether they have anything to do with Putin’s Kremlin. If Trump is undone by this secondary, derivative scandal, soon no one will remember exactly what happened and the collusion story may be validated by default, as far as most Americans are concerned.

I hope Mueller’s investigators will remember what they’re investigating, and I hope they do an honest job.

  22. BREITBART – U.S. Spending £150K to ‘Reduce Terrorism’ by ‘Promoting Positive Narratives’ of Migrants in Europe

The U.S. embassy in Belgium has allocated $200,000 (£154,000) for a group
    to ‘counter violent extremism’
through pushing ‘positive narratives’ of mass migration to Europe.

NGOs and nonprofits have until 29 May to apply for the year-long grant, for which they will be asked to “provide positive narratives concerning refugees and immigrant populations” and “dispel the narratives of extremist groups that incite violence and provide alternative narratives”.

Warning that “violent extremist groups are using advances in technology … to spread their propaganda and attract new recruits and inspire individuals more than ever before”, the U.S. embassy says the winner of the grant should be “creative”, and spread “counter messaging” about mass migration “into the cyber realms of gamers, bloggers, and digital activists where the war of ideas is really being fought”.

The grant winning group should promote ‘positive, tolerant messages’ about migrants and people of foreign origin, through “TV, radio, [the internet], and [via] social-media campaigns”, states the embassy document which outlines the project.

Other objectives mentioned in the grant’s announcement include “amplifying the role of women in building secure, tolerant families and communities”, and “directly working with schools … to engage young people in activities that provide exposure to moderate viewpoints and eliminate bias”.

The embassy aims for the programme, which can be completed anywhere in Europe, to “be sustainable beyond the life of the grant”.

According to the embassy in Belgium, which is one of the countries that U.S. President Donald J. Trump has yet to appoint a new ambassador to serve in, the grant to pedal rose-tinted views of mass migration will “reduce violent extremism and terrorism by promoting a comprehensive approach to address violent extremist challenges in Europe”.

More than a million migrants flooded into Europe in 2015 after German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced an open borders policy. Since then, Europe, Germany in particular, has seen suicide bombings, axe attacks, and a truck rampage, with numerous asylum seekers amongst the perpetrators.

    How to Defeat Suicide Bombers

A suicide bomber set off his explosives outside the Manchester Arena while concert-goers were leaving after the performance.

This indicates the limits of security measures: While it’s possible to screen those going inside, there will always be vulnerability outside the security checkpoint. In Iraq, lines of people waiting to go through security checkpoints were often struck by suicide bombers.

Israel found itself under incessant assault from suicide bombers during the Second Intifada (2000-2005) and figured out how to defeat this terrible menace through a combination of offensive and defensive security measures.

The number of suicide attacks in Israel fell from 53 in 2002 to none by 2009, through still-ongoing efforts by the IDF to disrupt West Bank terror cells before they can strike.

What the Israelis learned is that suicide bombers do not work alone: they require other people for indoctrination and preparation. Stop those other people – who are not suicidal – and you can prevent the human fuse from being lit.

  24. President Trump’s Visit to the Middle East

The royal welcome President Trump received in Saudi Arabia and his meetings with a long list of Arab and Muslim leaders provide him with the image of the authoritative leader of a superpower and the demonstration of a united front against Iran and the Islamic State.

The U.S. administration’s drive to promote the political process between Israel and the Palestinians marks the first opportunity in many years for a different, more realistic process. Even if it is not currently possible to reach a final status agreement, there is a greater chance than in the past to implement interim arrangements. This might improve the reality on the ground and create an environment more conducive to reaching a final status agreement in the future.

Just minutes after it became clear that what happened in Manchester was a terrorist suicide attack many media repeated the traditional calls to ignore the danger and the meaning of such attacks.
The ugly lie was repeated, that terror is a part of everyday life in big cities and we should not be paying so much attention to it. Cynics got more worried about the potential hurt feelings of Muslims than for the victims and their families.
The liberal Brittish newspaper “Indipendent” wrote that the answer to this attack was to continue living the way we used to. As if nothing had happened. I wonder when will these media and organizations finally say that perhaps there is a systematic problem. Exactly how many attacks would that take? One every week? Every day?

No, this is not normal, it is not a part of life in a big city and we must not pretend that life simply goes on. For 22 children and their parents life is over. I would guess the article they wrote in the Washington Post, if I had to guess, I would say that letter was done with help… I think this case is being managed at various levels by people who don’t want this case investigated… That is sort of a dangerous new development in recent years, that there’s pressure to just stop covering a story entirely… There’s these narratives to try to stop a discussion and stop these investigations altogether rather than just provide a different viewpoint to it.
