“SAUDI Arabia is being taken to court by the families of 800 9/11 victims who have accused the nation of being complicit in the horrifying terror attack that shook the world.
The families have filed legal action in a Manhattan court, claiming Saudi officials helped hijackers crash into the World Trade Center, killing almost 3,000 people in an act of catastrophic destruction.
Of the 19 hijackers who carried out the most deadly terror attack in modern history, 15 were Saudi nationals and three had previously worked for the kingdom.
The legal action claims officials from Saudi embassies helped to support hijackers Salem al-Hazmi and Khalid Al-Mihdar find housing, obtain cash and learn english 18 months before the attack.
The plaintiffs claim this allowed them to blend into the US landscape before carrying out the vile terror strike.
The lawsuit also claims a Saudi official stayed in the same hotel as several hijackers the night before the attack, and allegedly provides evidence the Saudi embassy in Germany supported lead hijacker Mohammad Atta.
Aviation lawyer Jim Kreindler told PIX11 News: “The Saudis were so duplicitous,”
“They claim to be allies fighting with U.S. against Iran, while at the same time working with the terrorists.
“There’s no question they had a hand in the 9/11 attacks.”
The lawsuit goes on to claim Saudi royalty funnelled money from charities into Al-Qaeda in a bid to appease the terror group.
Mr Kreindler has claimed the charities were “alter egos” of the Saudi government.
Many of the findings laid out in the lawsuit have been pulled from an FBI investigation into the horrific attacks.
Mr Kreindler added: “This lawsuit is a demonstration of the unwavering commitment of the 9/11 families to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for its critical role in the 9/11 attacks.”
It comes after Congress overruled Obama to pass JASTA – The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act – which allows americans to take legal action against countries who support terror.
Obama attempted to use his presidential veto to stop the act from passing, with then-Press Secretary Josh Earnest claiming it “could put the United States and our taxpayers and our service members and our diplomats at significant risk if other countries were to adopt a similar law”.”

Mock Slave Auction Stokes Tempers At Maplewood Elementary School
MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — When it comes time for fifth graders to learn about the history of colonization and slavery, it’s always a sensitive subject.
As CBS2’s Jessica Layton reported, parents like Tracey Jarmon-Woods said it became even more painful after what took place in a 5th grade classroom at her son’s school in Maplewood.
“There was a sale of a black child by white children in the classroom,” Tracey Jarmon-Woods said, “If you’re demoralized — sold on a block in 2017 — it may affect you the rest of your life.”
A mock slave auction earlier in the month was hotly discussed during after school pickup outside Jefferson Elementary School, and later at a board of education meeting.
“I’m disgusted, really disgusted a child was bought. That doesn’t make any sense,” one parent said.

Mexico threatens to ditch US corn imports
Mexico City (AFP) – Mexico has identified a potential weapon in its trade wrangle with US President Donald Trump: lucrative yellow cobs of American corn.
The Latin American nation imports billions of dollars’ worth of the yellow grain from the United States to feed its livestock.
But with Trump pushing to shake up the countries’ trade ties, Mexico is now threatening to buy from elsewhere.
That is worrying corn growers in some of the very same US states that voted heavily in favor of Trump: Iowa, North Dakota, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.
Trump has vowed to restrict free trade with Mexico in order to protect US jobs and industry.
But with Mexico gearing up for a potential trade battle, the effect could be the opposite — at least when it comes to corn.
“For US corn producers, Mexico is their number one export customer,” Thomas Sleight, president of the US Grains Council, told AFP.
“They are concerned about maintaining excellent relationships with long standing customers that they’ve built over generations.”

Federal investigators are examining whether far-right news sites played any role last year in a Russian cyber operation that dramatically widened the reach of news stories — some fictional — that favored Donald Trump’s presidential bid, two people familiar with the inquiry say.
Operatives for Russia appear to have strategically timed the computer commands, known as “bots,” to blitz social media with links to the pro-Trump stories at times when the billionaire businessman was on the defensive in his race against Democrat Hillary Clinton, these sources said.

Some of the stories were false or mixed fact and fiction, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the bot attacks are part of an FBI-led investigation into a multifaceted Russian operation to influence last year’s elections.
Investigators examining the bot attacks are exploring whether the far-right news operations took any actions to assist Russia’s operatives. Their participation, however, wasn’t necessary for the bots to amplify their news through Twitter and Facebook.

The U.S. federal government fears that in 2016, Russians conspired to overstimulate the American public with news favoring a particular point of view.
That’s the gist of the brief against Russia in a specific aspect of the Russia-hacked-the-election probe. The aspect in question involves getting to the bottom of this proposition, outlined by McClatchy today:
In other words, Russia allegedly tried to saturate social media with “pro-Trump stories.”
This allegation itself is far from proven. But even if it were proven – so what?
The FBI has apparently blown right past “so what,” and is moving out smartly to check and see if the publishers of “pro-Trump stories” were somehow colluding with the “Russian operatives” to hype their wares.

The presidential election in France officially got underway on March 18, when the Constitutional Council announced that a total of eleven candidates will be facing off for the country’s top political job.
The election is being closely followed in France and elsewhere as an indicator of popular discontent with traditional parties and the European Union, as well as with multiculturalism and continued mass migration from the Muslim world.
The first round of voting will be held on April 23. If no single candidate wins an absolute majority, the top two winners in the first round will compete in a run-off on May 7.
If the election were held today, independent “progressive” candidate Emmanuel Macron, who has never held elected office, would become the next president of France, according to several opinion polls.
A BVA market research poll for Orange released on March 18 showed that Marine Le Pen, the leader of the anti-establishment National Front party, would win the first round with 26% of the votes, followed by Macron with 25%. Conservative François Fillon is third (19.5%), followed by radical Socialist Benoît Hamon (12.5%) and Leftist firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon (12%).
For the first time, the two established parties, the Socialist Party and the center-right Republicans, would be eliminated in the first round.
In the second round, Macron, a 39-year-old pro-EU, pro-Islam globalist (platform here), would defeat Le Pen, a 48-year-old anti-EU, anti-Islam French nationalist (platform here), by a wide margin (62% to 38%), according to the poll.

The Media’s Cheery Ignorance about Islam’s Hostile Ideology

US President Donald Trump repeatedly rebukes the media for “dishonest” coverage and “fake news.”
Despite its fury over the accusations, however, the press continues to prove him right — albeit inadvertently.
Take a recent New York Times piece as an example. In their article, titled “Trump Pushes Dark View of Islam to Center of U.S. Policy-Making” (Feb. 1), authors Scott Shane, Matthew Rosenberg, and Eric Lipton cite a questionable source — Prof. Asma Afsaruddin of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at Indiana University — to prove their point that the president is promoting a “master narrative that pits the Muslim world against the West.” This, they claim, appeals to Trump supporters, “who know nothing of Muslims or Islam beyond news reports of terrorist attacks.”
Although Americans may be more familiar with Islamist attacks in Europe, North America, North Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent than with the perpetrators or the religion, it is the Quran’s content, the Prophet Muhammad’s sayings and conduct and current fatwas that, regardless of Trump’s rhetoric, have driven a wedge between the Muslim world and the West.

The Canadian government has repeatedly failed Omar Khadr, as the Supreme Court has demonstrated. It’s time it said sorry and compensated him.
In 2015, before becoming prime minister, Justin Trudeau said Omar Khadr, a Canadian citizen, deserved the protection of Canada’s judicial system.
Two years later, Trudeau’s government appears unwilling to compensate Khadr for the numerous times Canada withheld that protection from him.
It’s a shame, not to mention a missed opportunity.
After more than a decade of Ottawa failing its moral and legal obligations to defend Khadr’s human rights, Trudeau could help right the ship with a formal apology and financial settlement.
The Toronto-born Khadr was captured in Afghanistan at 15. Accused of throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. army medic, Khadr spent 13 years behind bars, most of them at Guantanamo Bay.
Khadr has said that, while in U.S. custody, guards threatened him with rape, physically abused him and once left him hogtied until he urinated on himself.
Canadian government reports show that, while at Guantanamo Bay, Khadr was subjected to sleep deprivation and solitary confinement in an effort to make him “more amenable and willing to talk.”
More damning still, the reports show Canadian officials knew about the “enhanced interrogation techniques” but assured the public he was being treated humanely.
In three separate rulings over the past decade, the Supreme Court of Canada has determined that the Canadian government acted illegally by sharing intelligence information about Khadr with the U.S.; violated Khadr’s constitutional rights by interrogating him at Guantanamo despite knowing he had been abused; and wrongfully placed Khadr in a federal penitentiary following his transfer to the Canadian penal system.
Canada’s role in Khadr’s Guantanamo interrogation “offends the most basic Canadian standards about the treatment of detained youth suspects,” the Court ruled in 2010.
On Friday, Ottawa announced the settlement of a $100-million lawsuit filed by Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin, three Muslim Canadian men who were imprisoned at the height of the War on Terror based in part on Canadian intelligence, and later tortured by Syrian authorities.
“We hope that the steps taken today will support them and their families in their efforts to begin a new and hopeful chapter in their lives,” said Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale and Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland in a joint statement.
Khadr and his lawyers have a long-standing $20-million suit against the Canadian government in relation to his abuse at the hands of foreign authorities.
But, as the Star’s Michelle Shephard reports, federal lawyers appear to be settling in for a prolonged court battle.
Khadr’s legal case is complicated. He pled guilty in 2010 to five war crimes, but has since recanted.
Khadr now says he does not know whether he killed the U.S. medic, and only confessed to get out of Guantanamo.
He was freed on bail in 2015, and is appealing his conviction — a process that could take years.
His guilt or innocence is not the issue here, though.
What matters is that, before even being afforded a trial, Khadr was abused in detention by Canada’s closest ally, with the knowledge of Canadian officials.
These breaches of government duty occurred before Trudeau’s tenure. But Friday’s settlement proves the prime minister’s willingness to rightfully take responsibility for past administrations’ mistakes.
The Canadian government has repeatedly failed Khadr, as the Supreme Court has demonstrated.
It should stop fighting him, apologize and settle, rather than litigate, this shameful case.

Judge Napolitano Pulled From Fox News After British Intel Wiretap Claims
Fox News’ Judge Napolitano is being kept off the air indefinitely after he made a claim that British intelligence wiretapped Trump Tower at Obama’s request.
According to the L.A. Times:
Fox News did not respond to inquiries about Napolitano’s status Monday. Napolitano was conspicuously missing from the network’s coverage of the confirmation hearings on Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch — an event in which he typically would have played a significant role. He has not been on the air since Thursday.
People familiar with the situation who could speak only on the condition of anonymity said Napolitano is not expected to be on Fox News Channel any time in the near future. Napolitano was not available for comment.
But Napolitano said on one program that “Fox News has spoken to intelligence community members who believe that surveillance did occur, that it was done by British intelligence.”
Fox News, however, did no such thing, forcing its anchors to walk back Napolitano’s statement.
“Fox News knows of no evidence of any kind that the now-president of the United States was surveilled at any time, in any way,” Shepard Smith told viewers Friday.
In a statement read on the Fox News program “MediaBuzz” on Sunday, Napolitano defended his comments. He said he “reported what the sources told me, reported it accurately and I do believe the substance of what they told me.”
Judge Nap is one of the truth tellers on Fox News. It would be a shame if they didn’t let him come back on. He will definitely make sure he is heard one way of another. Conservatives love Judge Nap!

Background
The Syrian Muslim Brotherhood formed the “Free Syrian Army” in 2011. In 2013, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood was being driven out of Egypt after a failed attempt to force Islamic Law on the Egyptian people. After their expulsion, the Egyptian Brotherhood then rallied with the Syrian Brotherhood to intensify the removal of the Syrian government in order to replace it with an Islamic one. At the time, the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood were also working closely with al-Qaeda in Iraq with a future goal of forming an Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
?The “Free Syrian Army” started out with two primary brigades: the Farouq and the Khalid ibn Walid. The Khalid ibn Walid brigade was funded and armed by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. The Farouq brigade consisted of Salafists (Saudi Arabian Wahhabists), who were armed and funded by Saudi Arabia and were affiliates of al-Qaeda. From the beginning, the “Free Syrian Army” and al-Qaeda worked together in many of their attacks on civilians in their attempt to take control of Syria.
But, in 2013, the Syrian Armed Forces were winning the battle against the Islamist takeover, and in order to reverse this, the Islamists needed an “intervention” that would assist and support their Islamist armies inside Syria.

Embattled FBI Director James Comey finally acknowledged publicly in congressional testimony that his agency is indeed investigating President Trump’s campaign for alleged ties to the Russian government and collusion regarding the November election.
The ongoing witch-hunt is probably a blessing in disguise for Trump. Democrats are putting all their eggs in one basket as they obsess over all these fuzzy and at times speculative connections between Trump and the Russians. They are feeding their crazed, Trump Derangement Syndrome-suffering base what nowadays passes for red meat. Normal people don’t care or they rightly intuit that the farfetched allegations that somehow some Russians hacked the election to favor Trump are nonsense.
The absence of evidence of collusion between Team Trump and Russia is overwhelming, for lack of a better word, and unless actual evidence of electoral mischief surfaces the public backlash against those crying wolf at some point is likely to be fierce.
It’s becoming like a continuous television adaption of Hans Christian Andersen’s short story, “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” for the 24-hour news cycle. Never has so much angst been generated over so little evidence.
Although it has long been FBI policy to neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation to avoid smearing individuals who eventually are exonerated of wrongdoing, Comey confirmed his agency is investigating any possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Barack Obama subordinated America’s national interests to his notion of global citizenship under the umbrella of strengthened multilateral organizations and international norms. He also believed that American power needed to be contained.
President Trump’s stated approach to virtually all issues relating to foreign policy is to put American national security and economic interests first. It explains his budget priorities, which would add billions of dollars for defense and border security, while cutting back on programs at the State Department undergirding so-called “soft diplomacy.” President Trump also views such global issues as trade, immigration, climate change and participation in multilateral institutions through the prism of “America first.” Thus, his budget blueprint would reduce U.S. funding contributions to the United Nations and multilateral development banks, while ceasing payments altogether to the United Nations’ climate change programs. It projects more reliance on America’s “hard power.”
However, aspirations are one thing. Implementation is another thing altogether. While it is far too early to grade the president’s performance in reaching his stated foreign policy goals, certain trends are emerging that raise concerns.

The high point of the day was the scheduled visit to the so-called “Island of Peace.”
The area, adjacent to the Naharayim electricity station, encompasses lands Israel ceded to Jordan in the 1994 peace treaty and Jordan leased back to Israel for continued cultivation by the Jewish farmers from Ashdot Yaakov who had bought the lands and farmed them for decades.
Israel’s formal transfer of sovereignty – and Jordan’s recognition of Jewish land rights to the area – were emblematic of the notion that the peace treaty was more than a piece of paper. Here, officials boasted, at the Island of Peace, we saw on-theground proof that Jordan and Israel were now peaceful neighbors.

6-The king wants to send you a message: If I fall, the Jordanians are crazy and may eat you alive. Jordanians hate Israel but they are mostly anti-Islamist and they are not willing to engage in wars. Evidence is how little they vote for Islamists.
7-Number of Syrian refugees is 650,000, and NOT millions. Number of Iraqi refugees is 160,000 (160K) and not millions either. I know this because I was the one in chrage of this matter when I worked for the US Department of State.
9-Jordan is safe for Israel because US controls our army and our intelligence. The king is rarely ever in the country.
10-I suggest you read this report for facts: Abed Al Maala, the Deputy Secretary General of the Jordanian Opposition, who stressed: “The king’s regime has raised this killer and systematically promotes terror. We got accustomed to it during the presidential election campaign: headlines in major media reminding us that there actually still exists something called the KKK. On November 1, only a few days before Americans went to the polls, the Washington Post found it worthwhile to devote an entire story to the fact that the KKK’s official newspaper (who knew the KKK had an official newspaper?) had endorsed Donald Trump. After Trump won, the Independent, a major British daily, ran a report with the headline “Former KKK leader David Duke: ‘We won it for Donald Trump.’” In January, the Huffington Post put up an article insisting that Trump’s dad had links to the Klan. And in February the New Yorker published a long, probing piece in which Evan Osnos sought to find something fishy in the fact that Trump didn’t denounce the KKK every ten minutes: “for months, as Donald Trump developed his political repertoire, he adopted an uncharacteristic reply for questions about fascism and the Ku Klux Klan: silence, or something close to it.” Aha! Gotcha! As if all this weren’t enough, the A&E network has apparently been running Generation KKK, an eight-part documentary series in which viewers were given a look at the lives of KKK members and their families.
It’s clear why the mainstream media are so fond of KKK stories. In a time when almost all the hate-driven violence is on the left, and when Islam poses a profound menace to American freedom and security, the KKK provides a handy diversion: Look, folks, the threat to our society is really on the right! Muslims aren’t adherents of a lethal ideology – they’re innocent objects of Klan hatred! Also, the KKK is great for guilt by association. To certain folks in New York and Los Angeles, pretty much all red-state families look alike, and the sight of a pathetic gaggle of losers on A&E waving swastika flags and wearing white hoods is enough to convince them that all of flyover country, from Pennsylvania coal country to the Central Valley, is one big Klan rally waiting to happen. And of course any time some KKK member expresses admiration for Trump, it offers a great opportunity to brand him and his entire administration as white supremacists.

The latest appeal letter by the World Jewish Congress (WJC), written by its President, Ambassador Ronald S. Lauder, headlined “Is it Time for Jews to Leave Europe?” Lauder cited recent violent attacks against Jews. Current polls indicate moreover, that a majority of European Jews do not feel comfortable wearing clothing or jewelry that identifies them as Jews. Lauder added, “Make no mistake…the safety and security of European Jewry is in Jeopardy.”
The Manchester Evening News reported on September 8, 2015 that, “Moshe Fuerst, 17, from Prestwich was brutally assaulted and suffered a fractured skull at Bowker Vale Metrolink station (in Manchester, England). He was one of four Orthodox Jewish boys beaten up by a gang of three youths.” In another case of an anti-Semitic hate crime occurring in August, 2015 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, two elderly Jewish Holocaust survivors were brutally attacked by two thugs. The attackers called Shmuel and Diane Blog, 87 and 86, respectively, “Dirty Jews.” The beating left them wheelchair-bound, and cost Shmuel his sight. The Dutch foreign minister issued a statement before his meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he expressed concern about the rising wave of anti-Semitism in Europe.
What is abundantly clear is that the self-imposed moratorium on anti-Semitism that was kept in Europe immediately following the Holocaust is long gone. The influx of Muslim immigrants into Europe, many of them radicalized by intolerant imams, preaching anti-Semitic sermons and violence. The radical-leftist parties have solicited their votes, and use the Jewish state as the collective Jew. This has created a climate, which makes Jewish life in Europe less than safe. In addition, the rise of ultra-right parties with their traditional anti-Semitism add to the mix of European Jewry anxieties. The Jews have once again become convenient scape-goats in a continent that 72-years ago witnessed the murder of Six Million Jews.

Interesting idea, the big problem I see is finding Congress critters who are brave enough to do this.
One of Mark Levin’s Liberty Amendments that he wants to come out of an Article 5 convention is to limit Judges to one 12 year term. He also wants criminal charges for ruling anyway but original intent of the Constitution and the Legislature.

Swedish Police In Trollhattan Attacked by ‘Youths’
Several Swedish police were attacked by a large gang of “youths” who went on a rampage armed with rocks and fireworks in the city of Trollhattan over the weekend.
On Sunday evening a group of around 20 to 30 young men rioted and caused havoc in the Kronogården district of Trollhattan. Police say the youths were armed with rocks and fireworks, which they used to smash up a bus shelter. When police arrived on the scene, the gang attacked them with rocks that were so large they disabled their police car, Nyheter Idag reports.
An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, told the paper: “They attacked police and the guards inside the area, in Kronogården. It was preceded by two powerful explosions. I thought ‘this is no firecracker, these are some bombs that have gone off’. Those were real f***ing bangs, two around twenty minutes apart.”
Police officer Goran Carlbom said the incident began shortly after 7 pm. Police received a call that a gang of youths were causing trouble in the area. “There was a call regarding young people who fired rockets. Then it escalated to the shooting at a bus shelter,” Carlbom said.

Study: Third of France’s Young Muslims Hold Fundamentalist Religious Views
A study looking at the prevalence of radical ideology among high school students has found that French Muslims are much more likely to tolerate violence and to hold fundamentalist religious views than other pupils.
The National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) study involved more than 7,000 students, aged between 14 and 16, who were studying at 21 schools and four academies in France.
Sociologists who conducted the survey, Anne Muxel and Olivier Galland, stressed the sample is not representative of French youth as a whole.
The schools included in the study are located in poor areas, with overrepresentation in the student body of pupils from working class backgrounds (41 per cent), students with immigrant backgrounds (38 per cent), and Muslims (25 per cent).
The CNRS reported that 11 per cent of respondents overall adhere to religious fundamentalism, which rises to 32 per cent among Muslim youths.

The surprise offensive was announced Tuesday by the Tahrir al-Sham alliance, which is dominated by the jihadist Fateh al-Sham Front, once linked to Al-Qaeda.
“This afternoon, Tahrir al-Sham began preparing for military operations against (regime) army positions in Hama province,” said Tahrir al-Sham press officer Imad al-Din Mujahid.
Tahrir al-Sham published photos of a massive explosion that it said was a suicide attack against a government checkpoint inside Suran.
Hama province is of strategic importance to President Bashar al-Assad, separating opposition forces in Idlib from Damascus to the south and the regime’s coastal heartlands to the west…”

“Moody’s Investors Service has taken rating actions on 17 Turkish banks, changing the ratings outlook from stable to negative on 14 of the lenders.
The ratings of one additional bank were also downgraded with a negative outlook, while the ratings of two other banks were affirmed with outlooks unchanged.
The outlook change was prompted by the deterioration of the outlook for Turkey’s credit profile as captured by Moody’s decision to change the outlook on Turkey’s Ba1 government issuer rating from stable to negative on March 17, said the rating agency.
Moody’s on March 17 changed Turkey’s rating outlook from stable to negative. Moody’s also affirmed Turkey’s government debt and issuer ratings at Ba1.
On March 20, Moody’s said its decision to affirm and change the outlook from stable to negative on the long-term deposit and debt ratings of 14 banks reflects Moody’s expectation that these banks’ ratings would come under pressure from a combination of the weakening capacity of the government of Turkey to provide support in case of need, as implied by the negative outlook on the sovereign rating; and the increasingly adverse macroeconomic environment in Turkey.
“Economic prospects have worsened significantly since Moody’s last rating action on Turkish banks in September 2016 and the rating agency expects this will negatively affect the banks’ asset quality, earnings generation and capital and may lead to heightened foreign currency refinancing risk,” read the statement.
The affected institutions include Akbank, Alternatifbank, HSBC Turkey, ING Turkey, Finansbank, Ziraat Bank, Halk Bank, Vakiflar Bank, Turk Ekonomi Bankas?, Garanti Bank, Yap? Kredi Bank, ?? Bank, TSKB and the GRI Export Credit Bank of Turkey.
Moody’s also downgraded ?ekerbank long-term deposit ratings from B1 to B2 and standalone Baseline Credit Assessment (BCA) from b1 to b2 and assigned a negative outlook to the long-term deposit ratings. The action captures Moody’s expectations that the financial fundamentals of the bank will deteriorate more in the adverse operating environment than other rated Turkish peers.
Moody’s affirmed Burgan Bank’s local and foreign currency deposit ratings at Ba3 and its BCA at b2. The outlook on the long-term deposit ratings remains stable, given the expected resilience of the bank’s financial fundamentals despite the challenging environment.
Moody’s also affirmed Denizbank’s local and foreign currency deposit ratings at Ba2 and its BCA at ba3. The long-term deposit ratings continue to have a negative outlook. The outlook reflects Moody’s expectation that while the bank’s fundamentals remain compatible with the current rating level, Denizbank shows some vulnerability to further deterioration amid the current operating environment.”
CANADA – OTTAWA – Ahead of M-103 debate, duelling mobs clash on Parliament Hill over Islamophobia
OTTAWA – More than two dozen police officers had to separate duelling mobs on Parliament Hill Tuesday afternoon after the two groups spent their lunch hour hurling loud and often profane epithets at each other in support of or in opposition to an anti-Islamophobia motion debated in the House of Commons Tuesday evening.
A handful of men in each group nearly came to blows but for the clutch of RCMP officers standing between them.
One group of about 35 people perched itself on the steps in front of Parliament’s Centre Block to protest Motion 103 or M-103, introduced in the House of Commons by Iqra Khalid, a Pakistan-born Liberal MP from Mississauga, Ont.
A handful of the anti-M-103 protestors were wearing “Soldiers of Odin Canada” sweatshirts.
Soldiers of Odin, on its Facebook page, says it is a non-profit dedicated to defending the charter of rights and freedoms but its critics allege it is an anti-immigrant, anti-refugee group.
The counter-protest mob of about 25 called out the Soldiers of Odin protestors as “Nazis” and “fascists” and chanted “Soldiers of Odin, go back to Sweden.”
In response, the counter-protest group was called “Communists” and “anti-Canadian” by the group protesting M-103.
The demonstration dissipated peacefully with the assistance of the police and, hours later, MPs debated M-103. It will be put to a vote on Thursday afternoon. Given that the Liberal majority in the House of Commons supports M-103, it is certain to pass.
Khalid seeks to accomplish three things with M-103: First, that the House “condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination;” second, that the House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage be instructed to study the issue of “eliminating systemic racism and religious discrimination including Islamophobia;” and, finally; that the federal government collect data on hate crimes for further study.
The motion is not a piece of proposed legislation. Indeed, many opponents of the motion and commentators often refer incorrectly to M-103 as “a bill.” It is not and, should it pass in a House of Commons vote, it would create no new laws nor would it change any laws.
Nonetheless, the Conservatives remain opposed to the motion and, on Tuesday, they argued for some changes to the wording of the motion, changes which they argued would strengthen the intent of the motion, namely to find a way to combat rapidly rising incidences of anti-Muslim hate crimes.
There is something quite perverse about the discussion of Motion 103,” Conservative MP Garnett Genuis told the House of Commons. “Effectively, Canadians have been divided on a motion, when there seems to me to be very little substantive disagreement on the underlying topic. Canadians, and all Parliamentarians, agree that discrimination against anyone is unacceptable.”
But Genuis, like other Conservatives and like the M-103 protestors earlier in the day, argued passage of the motion could be the basis for the future restriction of speech rights.
“The word ‘Islamophobia’ can be used to mean both discrimination against Muslims and criticism of Islamic doctrine or practice. It is important that we not conflate the two – religious people deserve legal protection, but religions do not,” Genuis said. “People should not discriminate against individuals, but should feel quite free to criticize the doctrine, history, or practice of any religion.”
The Liberals were buying none of that.
“Unequivocally and without hesitation, I can state that this motion is not an attempt to control or limit speech,” said Liberal MP Peter Schiefke, who represents a Montreal-area riding.
Nonetheless, Conservative MP David Sweet asked Khalid to modify M-103.
“M-103 could have affirmed the right to freedom of speech so Canadians can respectfully criticize any religious practice they believe to be wrong, including the one I adhere to and cherish,” said Sweet, a Christian.
“Instead of pursuing these changes in an effort to have a meaningful, inclusive and non-partisan study on the matters of racism and religious discrimination — a debate that should unify us — the Liberals have decided that there are more political points to win by ramming this motion through regardless of the legitimate concerns.”
New Democrats picked up on the politics of the M-103 debate, accusing both Conservatives and Liberals of being stiff-necked partisans more interested in scoring points.
“It is my hope that we can turn the page today and I call on both Liberal and Conservative members to set aside their partisan politics and unite with one voice on this motion,” said NDP MP Jenny Kwan.
The NDP voted with the Conservatives last month on a Tory MP’s motion to “condemn all forms of systemic racism, religious intolerance, and discrimination of Muslims, Jews, Christians, Sikhs, Hindus, and other religious communities.” That motion failed because the Liberals voted against it.
But the NDP will also vote Thursday with the Liberals in favour of M-103.
“There is no question that we have a duty as members of Parliament to set an example and speak out against all forms of discrimination and hate wherever we see it,” Kwan said.

Israel plans mass evacuation if war erupts again
JERUSALEM (AP) — If Islamic militants in Gaza or Lebanon go to war with Israel, they could find their usual targets empty.
Israel is drawing up contingency plans to evacuate up to a quarter-million civilians from border communities to protect them from attacks from Hamas, Hezbollah or other Islamic militant groups.
The mass evacuations would be the biggest in Israel’s history, part of a bigger plan where the army works with municipalities to keep civilians safe.
All sides have been preparing in case a new round of warfare breaks out, although Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed group sworn to Israel’s destruction, currently is tied down in Syria’s civil war fighting in support of President Bashar Assad. It also comes amid an uptick in tensions between Israel, Syria and Hezbollah.
