  2. As Turkey’s coup strains ties with West, detente with Russia gathers pace

    By ISTANBUL/MOSCOW- As Turkey’s relations with Europe and the United States are strained by the fallout from its failed coup, President Tayyip Erdogan travels to Russia on Tuesday to meet Vladimir Putin in a trip he may hope will give the West pause for thought.

    Turkish officials insist Erdogan’s visit to St. Petersburg is no sign that the NATO member and European Union membership candidate is turning its back on the West. Rather, they say, it is the next step in a rapprochement with Russia that started weeks before the July 15 attempted putsch.

    But the thaw with Moscow, which imposed trade sanctions nine months ago after Turkey downed a Russian fighter jet near the Syrian border, comes as Ankara’s relationship with the West could scarcely be more fractious.

    “A bomb blast at a Pakistani hospital killed at least 30 people and wounded dozens on Monday in Quetta, the capital of the violence-plagued southwestern province of Baluchistan, police said.

    The bomb exploded as mourners, mostly lawyers and journalists, gathered to accompany the body of Bilal Anwar Kasi, a prominent lawyer, who was shot and killed in the frontier city earlier on Monday, an eyewitness said.

    More than 50 mourners were entering the emergency department of the hospital to accompany Kasi’s body when the bomb went off, Faridullah, a journalist who was at the scene, told Reuters.

    At least 30 people were killed, with at least that many wounded as well, a police official who was at the scene told Reuters. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

    The motive behind the attack was unclear and no group had yet claimed responsibility…”

  10. Japan orders military to be ready for North Korea missile launch at any time

    Japan ordered its military on Monday to be ready at any time to shoot down any North Korean missiles that threaten to strike Japan, putting its forces on a state of alert for at least three months, a defense ministry official and media said.

    Up to now, Japan has issued temporary orders when it had indications of an imminent North Korean missile launch that it has canceled after a projectile had been launched.

    However, because some test firings are hard to detect, it has decided to put its military on standby for a longer period. The order will be reviewed after three months, state broadcaster NHK said.

  11. Tempers flare as temperatures soar at Rome’s ‘Gloomy Street’ migrant center

    ROME (Reuters) – Tempers are flaring between increasingly frustrated residents and boat migrants mostly from Africa using a well-known transit camp in central Rome as temperatures soar this summer.

    Italy is taking in thousands of boat migrants every week for a third year in a row, and friction is common between them and those who live along the path many take on their journey toward northern Europe.

    Set up by volunteers, the Baobab center, by Rome’s Tiburtina train station, was shut down by police in December in the wake of the Paris attacks and because the European Union wants Italy to stop migrants from moving on, not help them to do so.

    But Baobab volunteers quickly set up a camp on the street in front of the old shelter with tents and chemical toilets, serving three meals a day, and migrants have flocked there in their thousands.

  12. GPS Under Attack as Crooks, Rogue Workers Wage Electronic War

    Once the province of hostile nations, electronic warfare has arrived with little fanfare on U.S. highways and byways.

    Criminals, rogue employees and even otherwise law-abiding citizens are using illegal “jamming” devices to overpower GPS, cellphone and other electronic signals over localized areas. The devices are small and mobile — a common variety plugs into a vehicle’s cigarette lighter — making it difficult for law enforcement to identify the culprits.

    And experts say the threat to the Global Positioning System (GPS) — the critical space-based navigational, positional and timing network — is escalating as potentially more destructive “spoofing” devices become readily available

  13. World Vision NGO, accused of losing millions to Hamas, is Clinton Foundation partner

    The news broke last week: an investigation by Israel’s Shin Bet found that the Gaza organization of World Vision, the globe’s largest Christian NGO, had been thoroughly infiltrated by Hamas for a number of years. Since 2005, Muhammad El-Halabi, the operations manager of World Vision in Gaza, had funneled more than $7 million per year from the charity to the terrorist group – and not to the nominally political government of Gaza, but to Hamas’s so-called “militant wing,” which conducts the terrorist operations.

    El-Halabi, a Hamas operative from before his employment with World Vision, was detained by Israel in June 2016. World Vision protested his detention, and expressed unreserved support for him at the time.

    “Facebook rejected on Monday claims made by Germany’s state authorities that it was reluctant to co-operate with them on criminal investigations, saying many of the requests it received for user data were incorrectly formulated.

    Several regional interior ministers have complained that the social media group is hesitant to respond to requests for data and have called on the Federal Justice Ministry to introduce new laws.

    But Facebook said it had provided “round the clock assistance” to the authorities in Bavaria following a spate of violent attacks in Munich, Wuerzburg and Ansbach last month.

    A spokeswoman for the Justice Ministry said it was examining whether there was a need to change the law or whether there was a problem with its implementation.

    A recent spate of attacks in Germany has highlighted the importance security agencies give to working with social networks to uncover possible links to militant groups.

    Police said the Ansbach bomber had six Facebook accounts including one held under a false identity. Traces of an online messaging conversation found on his phone also suggest he was influenced by an unknown person up until the time of the attack, Bavaria’s interior minister said.

    Germany’s spy chief called on Monday for a more intensive exchange of information between social networks and security agencies in the fight against terrorism.

    “Social networks are an important communication method for jihadists. Therefore closer co-operation between the security agencies and the operators of social networks is necessary,” Hans-Georg Maassen, the head of the BfV domestic intelligence agency, told the Rheinische Post newspaper…”

  20. Russian strategic bombers hammer terrorists’ facilities in Syria

    “On August 8, 2016, six long-range bombers Tu-22M3, which took off from the Russian territory, have delivered a concentrated strike with high-explosive munitions against the facilities of the Islamic State terrorist organization in the areas east and northwest of Palmyra, near the communities of Es-Suhne and Arak,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

    As a result of the strike, the Russian bombers destroyed a command and control post and a large militants’ field camp near the town of Es-Suhne. The Russian strategic bombers also destroyed terrorists’ command posts, an underground ammunition depot, three infantry fighting vehicles, 12 cross country vehicles with large-caliber machineguns and also “a large number of the enemy’s manpower” in the area of Palmyra and Arak,” the ministry said.

  21. Pakistan: At least 53 killed as blast targets mourning lawyers in Quetta, Balochistan
    At least 53 people were killed and dozens injured after a bomb blast struck a gathering of lawyers at a civic hospital in Quetta in the Balochistan province of Pakistan, Monday, following the targetted killing of the President of the Balochistan Bar Association earlier in the day.

    The blast, which was reportedly followed by gunfire, targetted a group of lawyers that had gathered at the hospital to mourn the murder of Bilal Kasi, the President of the Balochistan Bar Association, who was shot by unknown assailants while on the way to work earlier on Monday morning.

    Local media, confirmed that lawyers and local media were among the casualties, with scores of lawyers and at least one cameraman killed in the blast. Pakistani authorities have stated that they suspect the blast was caused by a suicide bomber.

    Saudi Arabia maintains it is always ready to work with foreign countries to combat terrorism, but rarely speaks publicly on specific cases.

    A spokesman for the Saudi interior ministry, General Mansour al-Turki, said Saudi and German security experts had met and exchanged information over evidence showing that one of the attackers in Germany had been in contact through social media with a member of Islamic State using a Saudi phone number.

    Turki said the suspect was in an unspecified “country of conflict,” but declined to say whether he was a Saudi citizen.

    “The investigation is still ongoing between experts in both countries to try to find the parties to the case,” Turki told Reuters in response to a question on a report by news magazine Der Spiegel on Saturday.

    Spiegel said that traces of the chat indicate that both men were not only influenced by but also took instructions from people, as yet unidentified, up until the attacks….”

  25. Family of “Clock Boy” Ahmed Mohamed Files Lawsuit Against Former School

    Nearly one year after 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed was arrested for bringing a “suspicious-looking” homemade clock to class, his family has filed suit against his former Texas school district, the principal of the high school and the city of Irving.

    The lawsuit filed Monday claims that Ahmed’s civil rights were violated in the incident that made the 9th grader go viral last September.

    Accusations of racial and religious profiling fueled the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed. Even President Obama chimed in on Twitter, telling the boy: “We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”

    The charge — possession of a hoax bomb — was dropped, but MacArthur High School suspended Ahmed for three days.

    Citing a pattern of disproportionate disciplinary actions for black students in the Irving Independent School District and a history of anti-Muslim sentiment in Irving, the lawsuit alleges that Ahmed was discriminated against based on his race and religion. It also claims his Fourth Amendment rights were violated when he was interrogated by police and principal Daniel Cummings for over an hour without the presence of his parents before he was arrested.

    Ahmed’s family no longer lives in Texas. They moved to Qatar in October. But in June, they returned to Irving for summer vacation. That’s when they hired Hutchinson & Stoy, the Texas firm also representing a Baylor University student who claims the school ignored reports that she was raped by a football player.

    Irving ISD and city officials have not yet commented on the suit.

    Although a previous demand letter from the family threatened to sue the city and the school district for a combined $15 million, no specific dollar amount in damages is named in this lawsuit.

    “I lost a lot of things in my life,” Ahmed recently told The Washington Post. “The number one thing people think about me is that I’m living ‘the life’ .?.?. But I can’t build anymore. My dad doesn’t have a job anymore. I moved from my house to an apartment. I lost my place for building things. Over [in Qatar] it’s very boring, I can’t do anything. The only thing I can do is use the Internet.”

  26. Why the Obama Administration is now Concerned About Election Rigging

    If you talk to most self-identifying Democrats, election fraud doesn’t exist except in conspiracy theories in the minds of conservatives.

    But Democrats all of sudden start believing those conspiracy theories when they see that their preferred candidate loses or risks losing.

    U.S. officials are concerned about the possibility of election rigging this November, but only because the DNC computer systems and Hillary’s emails were hacked. If they can be so easily hacked, then how vulnerable are our electronic voting machines? Roll Call reported:

    With the stakes running high, the Obama administration has said it is attuned to the threat and is looking at ways to mitigate it. “There is a vital national interest in our election process,” Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson said Wednesday. “We are actively thinking about election cybersecurity right now.”

    One step the administration is weighing, Johnson said, is to include the electoral system as part of the nation’s critical infrastructure, putting it on par with the power grid and financial sector. Such a move would make the election system eligible for federal protection.

    Johnson also said that in the short term he is considering sharing a list of “best practices” with state and local election officials to help secure the integrity of the voting process. But in the long run, he said, the nation will need to invest in the cybersecurity of the entire electoral system.

    That documentary was produced in 2006 in response to the voting anomalies in the 2000 and 2004 elections – both of which George W. Bush won. So, when Republicans win, obviously there’s vote-rigging going on. When Democrats win, Republicans are sore losers and “conspiracy theorists” for bringing up election rigging.

    • I have only watched the first 20 minutes of the documentary and it does seem to be designed to imply that the Republicans are the ones stealing the elections. My experience is that the Dems routinely steal elections and are very upset when we mention what they do.

    The Patriarch of Antioch accused Western countries of hypocrisy in their fight against Islamist extremism by caring about oil more than refugees.

    A senior Syrian priest accused Western countries of abandoning their principles and allowing Islamist extremists to massacre Christians in the Middle East because they are blinded by their lust for oil, according to the Christian media outlet Crossmap.

    Patriarch Ignatius Joseph III Younan of the Syriac Catholic Church of Antioch made the remarks to a meeting of the Knights of Columbus in Toronto.

  28. Moroccan Teen Self-Immolates After Her Rapists Released
    The eight men who raped Khadija al-Swaida reportedly threatened to release pictures of the rape they had taken unless she dropped the charges.

    A teenage Moroccan girl set herself on fire after her rapists were released from prison.

    She was pregnant when she died.

    “Eight young men abducted the girl,” according to the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH) “and then took turns to rape her.”

    The attack took place last year when Khadija al-Swaidi, from Ben Guerir, 43 miles north of Marrakesh, was 16.

    Despite the police arresting seven suspects, shortly followed by an eighth, a prosecutor decided to grant the suspects a provisional release.

    They then threatened her saying they would “publish pictures of the rape which they had taken with their mobile phones unless she dropped the complaint against them” according to the head of the AMDH Omar Arbib.

    Distraught, she set herself on fire and died later from the burns while in hospital.

    In 2011, Morocco adopted a new constitution enshrining gender equality into law. In 2014, the country repealed a law that allowed rapists to escape justice as long as they married their victim.

    Morocco launched a probe into her death and re-arrested six of the suspects.

  29. Turkey: The State and the Systematic Use of Mob Violence
    The government apparently uses the mobs to shape the society as it wishes. Minorities and dissidents learn to know their place or just leave.

    Following the July 15 failed coup in Turkey, pro-Erdogan mobs across the country have attempted lynching not only against surrendering soldiers who took place in the coup attempt, but also against civilians just walking down the streets who they decide are anti-government.

    The latest victims were in Ankara and Istanbul.

    Ankara: Turks beat fellow Turk for “not holding Turkish flag”

    In Ankara, a young was beaten on the night of July 30 by three assailants for not holding a Turkish flag. A video (see below) of the assault has gone viral.

    The initial reports and social media accounts that shared the video said the victim was a French tourist. But the Turkish newspaper Birgun discovered that the victim, Mustafa Turan Caliskan, was an ethnic Turk from Yozgat, a central Anatolian city in Turkey.

  30. Turkey’s Shift From the West: Is Erdogan Switching Teams?
    Erdogan’s desire to reinstate the death penalty is more than just a policy statement. It may be a sign that Turkey is aligning itself with Russia and Iran.

    Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his million-strong supporters at a rally August 7 that if parliament voted to reinstate the death penalty for Turkey, he would support the move.

    Speaking at the mass gathering, dubbed the Democracy and Martyrs’ Rally, Erdogan vowed, “If the nation makes such a decision (in support of death penalty), I believe political parties will abide by this decision.

    “It is the Turkish parliament that will decide on this (death penalty) given the sovereignty rests with the nation…I declare it in advance, I will approve the decision made by the parliament.”

    The declaration is more than a statement of policy. Reinstating the death penalty is a strategic decision for Turkey indicating with whom the “Islamist democracy” has decided to align. After years of trying to enter the European Union, but falling short of the EU’s requirements — especially on the sticking point of adherence to international human rights standards — it appears Turkey has decided to snub Europe and throw its alliance elsewhere.

    “Several associations of judges in Germany have proposed a headscarf ban for judges and trainee lawyers, claiming that this is a necessary measure if neutrality is to be upheld in court.

    At present, the German Constitution does not ban citizens from wearing religious symbols. Only in Berlin does a ban exist for employees of city authorities (see below).

    But two judicial organisations – the Association of German Administrative Judges and the German Association of Judges – as well as the Ministers for Justice in the states of Baden-Württemberg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, are suggesting that judges and junior lawyers should be prevented from wearing the headscarf when they are in court.

    They argue that the external expression of religious conviction means that the judicial duty of neutrality is not upheld in the courtroom.

    Augsburg case

    The current debate surrounding the wearing of headscarves by judges and trainee lawyers was sparked off by a case in the Bavarian town of Augsburg in June earlier this year during which a 25-year-old trainee lawyer took the Bavarian legal system to court because they banned her from wearing a headscarf. She subsequently won the case.

    The Augsburg Administrative Court declared that the headscarf ban for legal trainees, which had been issued by the Federal Ministry of Justice in 2008, was an attack on religious freedom and had no legal basis, as Bavaria does not have a law which prevents trainees from wearing symbols of their faith.

    This was the first complaint of its kind against the headscarf ban for judges and trainee lawyers in Bavarian law courts.

    Advocates of the headscarf ban

    Following the Augsburg there have been several calls to impose a headscarf ban in courts.

    Guido Wolf, Minister for Justice in the state of Baden-Württemberg and member of Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is currently working on a law to ban judges and trainee lawyers from wearing a headscarf.

    Additionally, Uta-Maria Kuder, Minister for Justice in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and also a member of the CDU, said that obvious expressions of religion in court are inappropriate, because judges and prosecutors represent the state.

    “Because there is a particularly strict requirement for state neutrality in the courtroom, every external indication of a lack of objectivity should be avoided,” Kuder added.

    Neutral clothing is a symbol of impartiality

    So, why are a number of judges’ associations advocating the headscarf ban for judges and trainee lawyers at the moment?

    Ministries of justice throughout Germany currently require judges to wear a standard uniform consisting of a black robe with a white shirt or blouse underneath, as well as a white bow tie, cravat or neckerchief.

    The fact that “male and female judges are all dressed the same indicates to the parties involved that […] it [the outcome of the case] does not depend on the person, but solely on what the law says”, maintains Chairman of the Association of German Administrative Judges, Robert Seegmüller.

    In cases where the litigants have other religious convictions than Islam, it is especially important that neutrality of clothing is maintained, he went on to say.

    If judges were to wear headscarves in addition to their basic uniform, people’s trust in the impartiality of the justice system could be shaken, the German Federation of Administrative Judges also stated.

    Previous cases

    But this isn’t the first time that the headscarf question has been debated.

    Back in September 2013, a Muslim lawyer was forbidden from wearing a headscarf in a Berlin courtroom, the reason being that she should show religious neutrality when working as “an organ of the legal system”.

    Under the Neutralitätsgesetz (Neutrality Law) in Berlin, employees of any of the city authorities are banned from wearing any kind of religious or ideological symbol. However, discrimination on religious grounds is not permitted at all.

    “The Neutrality Law has nothing to do with indifference to religion or limitation of religious freedom. […] It is called the Neutrality Law because there are areas like schools, courts and the police, in which the state must maintain strict neutrality,” Mayor of Berlin Michael Müller told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.”

    “An ugly stand-off has unfolded at a church in Regensburg, where the local diocese has filed charges against four families of Roma refugees, who took shelter inside. Police were reported to be clearing the building.

    A month of talks have proved fruitless at the Catholic St. Emmeram community center in Regensburg, Bavaria, where four Roma families from various Balkan countries have been taking shelter since early July. The church itself has stopped providing food, while local refugee helpers have been barred from taking food inside. Late on Monday, local activists reported that the community center was being cleared by police – even though the refugees said they had agreed to return to their own countries if they could get help organizing this from authorities.

    On Friday, the local Catholic diocese pressed charges of trespassing on the refugees, issuing a statement saying that it had been left with “no other choice than to increase the pressure,” though it added that “an emergency doctor is reachable.” Some 16 people are understood to be still in the center, including five children and a six-month-old baby – though at one point some 50 were sheltering inside.

    The situation, which has been become increasingly fraught over the past month, escalated last Thursday, when talks ended in a stalemate after the Roma made what the church described as “non-satisfiable conditions” – in other words, as Stephan Dünnwald of the Bavarian Refugee Council explained, this meant that the refugees had asked for some kind of guarantee that they could stay in the country.

    But, in the meantime, the remaining families inside the church have said they would like to leave. According to a statement from Sunday by the Bavarian Refugee Council, three families have said that, for “lack of alternatives,” they would like to return to their home countries (Serbia, Macedonia, and Kosovo), while the fourth said they would like to return to the state of Baden-Württemberg, where they have “residential tolerance status.”

    In return, they have asked for the church to supply food until their voluntary return can be organized, as well as help from the Caritas charity and the foreigners’ registration office. In its statement condemning the church’s actions as “outrageous,” the Refugee Council accused the church and the authorities of showing a lack of will in helping the refugees to leave. “The apparent claim of the central foreigners’ authority of the Oberpfalz region, that voluntary leave could not be organized from Regensburg, is factually wrong,” the statement read.

    “They would find a way if they wanted to guarantee the voluntary exit from the country,” said Gotthold Streitberger of the Bavarian Refugee Council.

    Streitberger told DW that he had been prevented from entering the center, and that the church had threatened the security guards with dismissal if they did not stop food being taken in. “Some people came with food and the security guard said politely that it can’t be taken in, so they tried to set it down outside, and the children wanted to come out and take it, but that was banned too,” he said.

    Tense situation

    “The refugees are very tense and nervous at the moment,” he said. “They don’t understand why they are being starved out now that they’ve said they want to leave.”

    What’s Coming Is Going to Be a Mess

    The last two months alone have seen Britain leaving the European Union, terror attacks, cop killings, Deutsche Bank nearly collapsing, the German long term interest rates set at negative, to name a few.

    But over the next couple of years, it’s going to get a whole lot worse. As economies worsen, there will be more social unrest, more angry people, and crazier politicians. Somebody will try to come along on a white horse to save us all, but she usually makes it worse.

    Are we at a point right now where it feels like it’s accelerating. People all over are very unhappy about what’s going on. If you read history, there are a lot of similarities between now and the 1920s and ’30s. That’s when fascism and communism broke out in much of the world. And a lot of the same issues are popping up again.

    Brexit could be a triggering moment. This is another step in an ongoing deterioration of events. It’s also an important turning point because it now means the central banks are going to print even more money. That may prop the markets up in the short term.

    We have a strange economy. Markets look like they’re fine. But underneath the surface, most stocks are not doing well. Most stocks around the world are down. Most stocks in the United States are down. In 2015, when the market averages were flat, twice as many stocks were down on the New York stock exchange as were up. And in the last nine months, earnings are down in the United States. A recession is starting, it is already in place. But if you look at the averages and the bond market, they still go up.

    That’s because all the central banks are running their printing presses as fast as they can, and Brexit means they’ll run them even faster. Except for the central banks printing a lot of money, the entire market would have tanked by now.

    Five men had been charged with murder, but only 28-year-old Adam Abdulahi and 25-year-old Ahmed Warsame were handed a lifetime sentence at Gothenburg District Court on Monday morning.

    The other three were sentenced to 14 years in jail in accordance with Swedish law, because they were under the age of 21 at the time, reported the Expressen tabloid.

    Another three, aged 19-22, were found guilty of aiding and abetting. One was sentenced to 14 years in prison, another to ten years and the third to seven years. All eight have consistently denied the charges.

    In at least 23 municipalities, officials plan to place refugee children directly into the public school system even if they haven’t yet mastered the local language.

    Broadcaster TV2 surveyed officials in Denmark’s 98 municipalities on their plans to educate refugee children. Of the 75 municipalities that responded, 23 of them said that refugee kids would be placed in normal classes rather than special introductory courses that have been offered in the past. A number of additional municipalities said that they are considering following course.

    In most instances the school officials said that special language training and other initiatives would be available to the refugee children, but that hasn’t stopped the Danish Union of Teachers (Danmarks Lærerforening) from criticizing the plans.

    “Under all circumstances, this will mean that a student who doesn’t speak Danish will require something extra and that will naturally take away from the other students,” the union’s deputy chair, Dorte Lange, told TV2.

    Although his municipality told TV2 it would not be placing refugee children in normal classes this year, Aalborg Mayor Thomas Kastrup-Larsen said that mixing refugees with other Danish children as soon as possible is a wise strategic move.

    “It is an investment that is made based on what will provide the best integration and the best school, while also proving to tbe the most effective in the long run,” he said.

    Local Government Denmark (Kommunernes Landsforening), an interest group for all of Denmark’s 98 municipalities, said that around 6,000 refugee children will enter the public school system this year.”

    “A series of attacks linked to asylum seekers have taken place in Austria in recent weeks including one in which two young mothers pushing prams were attacked in a park in broad daylight.

    The man reportedly started groping and fondling one of two young women out walking with their prams in Lower Austria.

    When the second young mum tried to stop him, he had attacked her instead and reportedly tried to rip off her dress. Together the women managed to shout and attract attention and the man ran off, but was arrested a short while later by police.

    Police say he is a 20-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan, who arrived in Austria in the spring, and is currently being held in investigative custody.

    The incident in St. Georgen am Ybbsfelde follows a dozen or so similar incidents involving a small minority of asylum seekers in Austria this year that, having been widely covered by the media, have boosted support for the far-right Freedom Party.

    In other incidents last week, in the town of Wolfsberg in Carinthia a 29-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan was arrested and detained after attacking his 21-year-old girlfriend with a knife. According to the Krone newspaper, he was angry she could not stop her infant son from crying.

    In a third incident in the city of Mödling, a group of young asylum seekers reportedly groped a girl in the restroom of a restaurant.

    The young woman was also licked on her face by the group of men, according to Krone, but after she struggled and screamed, the group left.

    The mayor of Mödling has said he is fed up with some young, unaccompanied refugees from Afghanistan causing similar problems…”

    A church, a house and other personal property were vandalized with graffiti that said “Black Power” as well as vulgar words Saturday morning in Danville.

    The Rev. Brian Martin of Christ the King Lutheran Church on Franklin Turnpike said that at around 7 a.m. Saturday, police notified him of the vandalism.

    “Black Power,” “BLM and vulgar words were spray painted on the outside of the church.

    The house next to the church and a shed were vandalized as well. Reports of an apartment complex with similar graffiti also spread.

    And another church was also targeted with Black Lives Matter graffiti as well.

    A Chinese tourist on a grand tour of Europe was accidentally identified as a migrant and drawn into Germany’s migration system, finding himself locked in a migrant camp for two weeks after he attempted to report a crime.

    The 31-year-old tourist, who spoke no English or German, had his wallet stolen while sightseeing in the country. But when attempting to report the theft he accidentally made the complaint in Heidelberg town hall rather than the police station. While signing a form he believed to be a crime report about his stolen possessions, the Chinese national was inadvertently signing a government asylum application, reports local paper the Dülmener Zeitung.

    By signing the paper, the tourist set in motion a bureaucratic process from which he was unable to then escape — he was stripped of his Chinese passport and visa by the German authorities, given “refugee documents”, X-rayed, had his fingerprints scanned, and “medically examined”. Through this whole process, the tourist apparently did not offer resistance, nor was he able to ask for an explanation of what was happening.

    Germany’s Rheinische Post reports the remarks of local Red Cross director Christoph Schlütermann who said because the Chinese man had “a lot of respect for authority”, he was “comfortable” having his documents taken and being examined after believing he reported a crime. “He simply did as he was told”, he said.

    The merchants of Big Racism, or the Racism-Industrial-Complex (RIC), oscillate between two contradictory assertions. On the one hand, they assure us that there are no differences between blacks and whites in terms of criminality, that blacks are disproportionately arrested and incarcerated because of “racist” criminal justice system. Yet, on the other hand, they admit that while blacks do indeed engage in criminal activity to a far greater extent than do whites (or, for that matter, any other racial group), this is a “legacy” of slavery and Jim Crow.

    To repeat, these two propositions are mutually contradictory. For the time being, though, let’s focus on the latter.

    Numerous thinkers, black, white, and other, have successfully, repeatedly, debunked the legacy of slavery argument. Without regurgitating their arguments, though, I’d prefer instead to consider a conveniently neglected part of the history of slavery in the New World, that part of the past that involves white slaves. After all, if the enslavement and oppression of their ancestors explains the high rate of criminality among blacks today, then, presumably, it’s true as a general principle that slavery and oppression ultimately lead to criminality. But if this is true, then the enslavement and oppression of whites of yesteryear should’ve led to marked criminality among today’s whites.

    Did Erdogan engineer it himself?

    It is not clear yet whether the July 15, 2016 failed coup in Turkey was an authentic coup by frustrated military officers, and conceived by the Turkish U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, as claimed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, or an insidious plot by Erdogan to complete his dictatorial takeover of the Turkish state. In the process, he is set to destroy the last vestiges of the Ataturk legacy of Turkish secularism, guaranteed by the judiciary and the military. It would seem somewhat curious that Erdogan was able to escape from the so-called plotters who allegedly raided the hotel in the Aegean resort town of Marmaris, where the vacationing Erdogan had been staying during the coup. It is furthermore mysterious that the plane taking him back to Istanbul was miraculously able to avert the “plotters” jets and helicopters supposedly set to assassinate him while hovering nearby.

    What is abundantly clear is that Erdogan did not wait an extra minute to execute his plan to destroy all of his perceived opposition. He issued a new presidential decree last Sunday that introduced sweeping changes to Turkey’s military in an attempt to bring the armed forces further under civilian authority, or more precisely, under his authority. A decree, the third issued under a three-month state of emergency declared after the attempted coup, gives the president and prime minister the authority to issue direct orders to the commanders of the army, air force and navy.
