1. Paris police arrest Al-Jazeera journalists over drone
(If ever a word needed to be in single quotes, it is the word ‘journalist’ in the BBC headline above)
Three Al-Jazeera journalists have been arrested for the alleged illegal flying of a drone in Paris after being spotted by police in the Bois de Boulogne area.
A spokesman for prosecutors said there was “no relationship for the moment” between the arrests and mysterious drone flights over the city at night.
Al-Jazeera said the journalists had been “filming a report on the city’s recent mystery drones”.
Drones were spotted over city landmarks for a second night running on Tuesday.
2. Unlicensed drink-driver who was three times over the limit when he crashed his car avoids jail after court hears he has re-found Islam
(I find this alarmingly similar to this story from the UK a couple of years ago)
An unlicensed drink-driver who was three times over the limit when he crashed a friend’s car has walked free after a court heard he had re-found Islam and was living a more pious life.
Asif Masood, 40, ploughed a Ford Focus into a fire hydrant in Nottingham after driving over a roundabout following a drinking binge on November 17 last year.
The car’s wheel had come off, while tyre tracks and debris criss-crossed the road, magistrates heard.
When police arrived he was found swaying near his wrecked vehicle and told officers: ‘I’ve crashed my car, I’ve had lots and lots to drink and I don’t have a driving licence.’
He was breathalysed and produced a reading of 98 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35.
But Masood, who has nine previous convictions for 14 offences, walked free from court after magistrates heard he had re-found his faith and was now teetotal after quitting drink and drugs

5. Three men admit kicking tropical fish to death in late raids at north London retirement home
Three men have been convicted of killing 15 tropical fish by kicking them and pouring bleach into their tank.
Brothers Omar Khan, 20, and Suliman Khan, 18, and their cousin Yousuf Khan, 18, admitted killing the exotic fish collection during a series of break-ins at retirement home Ada Court in Maida Vale.
Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard they first sneaked into the home on January 25, pulling three fish out of the water and kicking them to death on the floor.
Returning again at 1.30am on January 31, they teased the remaining fish by yanking them out of their tank, before pouring in bleach and killing them all.
Ben Edwards, prosecuting, said: “You could see the fish trying to escape by jumping out of the tank, but the defendants put them back in.”

Boko Haram crisis: Regional force takes shape (BBC, Feb 25, 2015)
“Military chiefs from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Benin and Niger are finalising their strategy for a 8,750-strong regional force to tackle the militant Islamist group Boko Haram.
In the last few weeks, the Multinational Joint Task Force has retaken several towns captured by the militants in north-eastern Nigeria.
Now, the regional chiefs are preparing for a major ground and air offensive due to start next month – and are meeting in Chad this week to set out the command structure.
The force will be led by a Nigerian commander, after which the position will rotate among the members….”
Yemen ex-leader Saleh ‘amassed up to $60bn’ – UN probe (BBC, Feb 25, 2015)
“Yemen’s former president Ali Abdullah Saleh is suspected of amassing $30bn-$62bn of assets during and after his time in power, UN experts have said.
They said Mr Saleh was believed to have transferred much of the wealth abroad under other names.
Yemen is the poorest country in the Middle East. It is in political turmoil, with Mr Saleh widely thought to retain a key role behind the scenes.
Mr Saleh has in the past denied allegations of corruption.
He was Yemen’s leader for 33 years before being forced from power in one of the 2011 Arab uprisings.
The report said Mr Saleh’s assets included property, cash, shares, gold and other valuable commodities spread across at least 20 countries.
“The origin of the funds used to generate Ali Abdullah Saleh’s wealth is believed to be partly from his corrupt practices as president of Yemen, particularly relating to gas and oil contracts,” it says.
Illegal activities produced private gain amounting to “nearly $2 billion a year over the last three decades”, it alleges.
“Many have argued that the country’s spiralling debt and economic problems would be alleviated with a repatriation of these alleged stolen assets,” the report noted.
It was authored by a panel of experts who monitor UN sanctions on Yemen.
The security situation in Yemen deteriorated sharply after President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi resigned in January following a takeover by a Shia militia group, the Houthis.
The UN experts said Mr Saleh, with the backing of large parts of the army, had “colluded with the Houthis in what resulted in a coup d’etat” against Mr Hadi.”
@5……retards.Now you feel offended by fish, you sick, sick poor excuses for men.You need to be force fed bacon.
Taking a delight in killing hapless pet fish by putting bleach into the water and stomping on them in order to kill them for the ‘fun’ of it is bad enough in itself. What compounds the psychopathy is that they knew it was in an old people’s retirement home. The elderly residents must have seen these fish as pets. One can only imagine the way this attack has made them feel.
It’s just another more subtle form of terrorism. The perpetrators should be jailed and taken to court in a civil action to make them replace everything they have destroyed – and do community service at retirement villages for years.
Nasty, pathetic, brainless pieces of sh*t.
Argentina Congress votes to dissolve intelligence agency (BBC, Feb 26, 2015)
“Argentina’s Congress has approved a bill to scrap the country’s intelligence agency.
The Intelligence Secretariat will be replaced with a new federal agency that will be accountable to Congress.
The proposal was drafted last month by President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, following the death of special prosecutor Alberto Nisman.
She accused a rogue agent of feeding misleading information to Mr Nisman, who was investigating the government.
The lower house of Congress voted 131 to 71 in favour of the bill. It had already been passed by the Senate.
During a six-hour-long debate, opposition lawmakers repeatedly expressed their discontent with the fact that under the new law, oversight of all wiretaps will be moved from the intelligence services to the General Attorney’s office.
They said they felt uneasy about the close ties between the government and the current General Attorney….”
Kabul bomb hits Turkish embassy car (BBC, Feb 26, 2015)
“A suicide attack on a Turkish embassy vehicle in Kabul has killed at least one person, Afghan officials say.
The bomber rammed a vehicle carrying explosives into the car in the Afghan capital’s diplomatic quarter, reports said.
In a text message, the Taliban said it carried out the attack, which happened around 08:00 (03:30GMT).
There have been sporadic attacks in Kabul recently. In November, a British embassy car was targeted by a bomber.
Five people were killed in that attack, including one British national.
Another attack took place in January, when a suicide bomber hit a European Union police vehicle, killing a passer-by.
Thursday’s blast took place outside the Iranian embassy, which is next to the Turkish mission.”
Dozens of Australian women ‘supporting terrorism’ (BBC, Feb 26, 2015)
“Up to 40 Australian women have taken part in terror attacks or are supporting militant groups, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has said.
She told parliament an increasing number of women were going to Syria and Iraq to join husbands fighting with Islamic State (IS) or marry a militant.
Dozens of Australian nationals are thought to have joined IS.
Australian officials are worried about the effect of returnees, and on those who support them, on domestic security.
Ms Bishop said that women accounted for nearly one-fifth of all foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq, but that it “defied logic” that women would join groups such as IS….”
German Jewish Leader: Don’t Wear Kippa in Muslim Areas (abcnews, Feb 26, 2015)
“Germany’s top Jewish leader is suggesting that Jews shouldn’t wear the traditional skullcap, or kippa, in areas with large Muslim populations.
Josef Schuster, the head of the Central Council of Jews, told rbb Inforadio Thursday that Jews in Germany generally feel safe, though security measures need to be evaluated frequently.
Schuster says that “hiding is not the right way” of dealing with worries about anti-Semitism.
But he says it’s right to ask whether, in areas with high Muslim populations in Berlin and elsewhere, “it really makes sense to identify oneself as a Jew by wearing a kippa, for example, or whether it’s better to wear different headgear there.”
Security worries among European Jews have been stoked by recent attacks in Paris and Copenhagen.”
Recall this recent related link: An Israeli barber has created a yarmulke design that uses human or synthetic hair rather than traditional materials like suede or velvet to craft a skullcap that allows religious European Jews to keep a lower profile in the face of rising anti-Semitism.

Egypt: Series of Blasts in Cairo Kill 1, Wound at Least 7 (nbcnews, Feb 26, 2015)
“A series of blasts in Cairo on Thursday killed one person and wounded at least seven, Egyptian security officials said, the latest in a wave of attacks using homemade explosives that authorities blame on Islamist militants.
The officials said four bombs exploded in the residential districts of Imbabah and Mohandiseen in the Egyptian capital, which is home to some 18 million people. Later, a blast outside a police station in the nearby Warraq district wounded four people, including a police conscript.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media….”
#2 he had re-found Islam and was living a more pious life.
Most Muslims become Jihadis once they have re-found Islam
I hope the security agencies are keeping an eye.
Why do judges impose minimal sentences on Muslims, even when the crime is serious. If the same crime had bbeen pereptrated by a non-Muslim, the sentence would be much heavier. Sentences on Muslim rapists raping young girls/children is a case in mind.
Beautiful exotic fish, openly swimming in their tank for all to see giving pleasure and comfort for those elderly to enjoy. Surely it is Haram?
Because what righteous anger is there not to invoke, within these emotionally repressed young men, to want to beat to death and throw acid in their fishy faces?
Those similar emotions invoked towards the uncovered head of a woman with makeup that shimmers… Her power to create a smile. Happiness. Vitality. A great to be alive feeling. The fresh air of freedom.
Where will this practice of tortured children’s minds to submit to the fearful memory of the Pervert Prophet Mohammad ever end?
It won’t. The politicised police have been told to look away from childhood abuse, as these are the minds of future generations controlled by Laws that prevent free speech on the pretext of causing offense. Yet all insults really do is make you aware something else is controlling you, when you become outraged, and that realization of how your fat ego can be easily manipulated, will save you.
It never was about Colors of Diversity. It was about having Monotone in the fish tank.
IS militant ‘Jihadi John’ named as Mohammed Emwazi from London (BBC, Feb 26, 2015)
“The masked Islamic State militant known as “Jihadi John”, who has been pictured in the videos of the beheadings of Western hostages, has been named. The BBC understands he is Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born British man in his mid-20s from West London, who was known to UK security services. They chose not to disclose his name earlier for operational reasons….
Friends of Emzawi told the Washington Post that he was raised in a middle class area of West London and studied computer programming at the University of Westminster…..”
aye…..nothing to fear here then,jolly good show,move along there,just a lone wolf………
Guess he couldn’t find work in his field.
Islamic State fighters destroy priceless Iraq antiquities
Hardline Islamist militants in northern Iraq have destroyed a collection of priceless statues and sculptures dating to the ancient Assyrian era, according to a video published online.
The Islamic State video showed men attacking the artefacts, some of them identified as antiquities from the 7th century BC, with sledgehammers or drills, saying they were symbols of idolatry.
“The Prophet ordered us to get rid of statues and relics, and his companions did the same when they conquered countries after him,” an unidentified man said in the video.
The articles destroyed appeared to come from an antiquities museum in the northern city of Mosul, which was overrun by Islamic State last June, a former employee at the museum told Reuters.
The militants shoved statues off their plinths, shattering them on the floor, and one man applied an electric drill to a large winged bull.
The video showed a large room strewn with dismembered statues, and Islamic songs played in the background.
Lamia al-Gailani, an Iraqi archaeologist and associate fellow at London-based Institute of Archaeology, said the militants had wreaked incalculable damage.
“It’s not only Iraq’s heritage: it’s the whole world’s. It’s human heritage,” she told Reuters.
“They are priceless, unique. It’s unbelievable. I don’t want to be Iraqi any more,” she said, comparing the damage to the dynamiting of the Bamiyan Buddhas by the Afghan Taliban in 2001.
As well as Assyrian statues of winged bulls from Nineveh and Nimrud, Gailani said the Islamic State hardliners appeared to destroy statues from Hatra, a Hellenistic-Parthian city in northern Iraq dating back around 2,000 years.
Islamic State espouses a fiercely purist school of Sunni Islam, deeming many other Muslims to be heretics. They have destroyed Shi’ite and Sufi religious sites and attacked churches in the parts of Syria and Iraq under their control.
“Muslims, these relics you see behind me are idols that were worshiped other than God in the past centuries,” the unidentified man in the Islamic State video said.
“What is known as Assyrians, Akkadians and others used to worship gods of rain, farming and war other than God and pay all sorts of tributes to them.”
Wonder what took them so long.

CBC – Syrian jihadists believed to have recruited 6 young Quebecers
At least six young Quebecers from Laval and Montreal have left the country in January to join militants in Syria.
According to early information, two of them appear to be young women from Laval, while at least one of the young men is from Montreal. It is not yet known where the other three men are from.
Some of those who left are students at Montreal CEGEP Collège de Maisonneuve.
“We’ve been informed about three yesterday and in fact, those three names — they were students in our college for the last [semester], but not this [semester],” said Brigitte Desjardins of Collège de Maisonneuve.
They reportedly flew out of Montreal-Trudeau international airport to Turkey as a path into Syria in mid-January.

AUSTRALIA – Bendigo councillor Elise Chapman tweets genital mutilation image to mosque supporter
A local councillor opposed to the building of a mosque in Bendigo sent a disturbing image of babies with mutilated genitals to a woman who supported the development.
City of Greater Bendigo councillor Elise Chapman tweeted the image to a Bendigo woman on Sunday, writing “Oh we could have this here too? Would you like your fanny sliced off?”.
The tweet was a photograph of five girls, who appear to be aged no older than two, crying as they lie on the floor with blood seeping from their wounds.
Fairfax Media has decided not to publish the image.
[…]The woman who tweeted Cr Chapman on Sunday did not wish to be identified. She said she had simply wanted to show support for the mosque.
“I did not put in a complaint, although everyone was pushing for it and I was beginning to consider it,” she said.
“The whole thing just really upset me though.
“I felt almost threatened, the way she spoke, the photos she shared, all from showing my own, personal support for Bendigo’s mosque.”
The Islamic Council of Victoria have been contacted for comment.
Cr Chapman’s Twitter account was suspended about 6pm. A Twitter spokesman had earlier said he could not comment on specific cases but encouraged the reporting of offensive material.
A petition calling for the removal of City of Greater Bendigo councillor Elise Chapman from council is circulating online.
