Algerian soldiers have shot dead a heavily armed Islamist in the Tebessa region on the northeastern border with Tunisia, the defense ministry said Sunday.
“As part of the fight against terrorism, an army detachment in Tebessa shot down… a terrorist” near the area of Ain Mdila on Saturday, the ministry said in a statement carried by the national news agency APS.
A Kalashnikov assault rifle and a large quantity of ammunition and explosives were seized during the operation, it added.
Four smugglers brandishing Kalashnikovs threatened an Italian Coast Guard motorboat involved in one of several operations that rescued more than 2,000 migrants leaving Libyan shores on Sunday.
Italian Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said the gunmen used a small boat to speed to the scene some 50 miles (80 kilometers) off the coast of Libya, where security is rapidly deteriorating.
After threatening the rescuers who had taken aboard the migrants, three of the smugglers jumped onto the then-empty migrants’ boat and took off with it.
A Cabinet Minister has warned that a “creeping cultural acceptance” of anti-Semitism is taking over in Britain.
Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said that a recent series of anti-Semitic acts across the country had been “almost casual”, warning that the “irrational hatred of Jews” could return to Europe.
Mr Pickles visited Auschwitz this week for the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp where over 1 million died. Following the visit, he cautioned that “only the most naïve” would dismiss the potential risks for Jews in Europe.
5. Here is something I never thought I would see. Someone from a New York Comedy show actually trying to present something factual and important.
