The latest example of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdo?an’s folie de grandeur is the new presidential palace built at a cost of $615 million on Atatürk’s Forestry Farm in Ankara.
The farm was originally owned by the founder of the Turkish republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and donated to the Turkish state in 1937. It was declared a protected zone in 1992, a first-degree protected zone in 1998, but was reduced to a third-degree zone in 2011 to make way for what (then) Prime Minister Erdo?an determined would be an “unforgettable” new prime ministerial building. However, when he won Turkey’s first presidential election in August, Erdo?an decided he would move to the new complex instead of the traditional Çankaya Palace.

Internet users would be forced to pay a new federal tax on their monthly bills if the government approves regulations recently endorsed by President Obama, a member of the Federal Communications Commission predicts.
Commissioner Mike O’Reilly addressed what’s known as “net neutrality” at a Washington seminar on Friday. He spoke after Obama backed stricter rules by calling for preventing service providers from charging more for speedier service and for regulating them like telecommunications companies under a decades-old law.
That law requires telecommunications companies to pay into the FCC’s “Universal Service Fund” — and would likely require the same of Internet companies. But O’Reilly says history clearly shows that the fees would quickly be “passed off” to customers, just like they are now on monthly phone bills.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is planning to expand his controversial, grandiose presidential palace with a 250-room residential building, Ankara’s top architect confirmed on Thursday .
The additional residency complex will be built adjacent to the palace, confirmed Tezcan Karakus Candan, the chairman of the Turkish Chamber of Architects in Ankara.
“The residence where the president will live is set to be around 7,000 square metres, according to our calculations. It is about 4,000 square metres in surface. If each room is 20 metres, then it means he is building himself a residence with 250 rooms,” said Candan.

The Church of England Chooses Extremist Islam
It is troubling that the first non-Christian to address the Church of England synod can be linked to extreme Islamist networks. By inviting Fuad Nahdi, the Church is lending credence to the notion that only radical Islamism can represent British Islam. What hope, then, for those genuine moderates within Britain’s Muslim community?
A British Muslim activist is to speak before the Church of England’s general synod on November 18 — the first time a non-Christian has addressed the assembly.
Counter-extremism campaigners, however, have expressed disappointment that the Church would choose an activist accused of connections with extremist groups.
Fuad Nahdi, director of the British Islamic organization Radical Middle Way [RMW], has a long history of working with activists and groups tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, described by the former head of the MI6 as being, “at heart, a terrorist organization;” and Jamaat-e-Islami, the Brotherhood’s South Asian cousin, responsible for acts of genocide during Bangladesh’s 1971 Independence war.

Muslim speaks to Church of England synod for first time
A British Muslim addressed a Church of England synod for the first time on Tuesday in a discussion with Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby on the suffering of religious minorities in Iraq and Syria, Agence France-Presse reported.
Fuad Nahdi, head of Radical Middle Way, a think tank involved in inter-faith dialogue, recited an Islamic prayer and greeted the Anglican gathering with the Islamic greeting “salaam aleikum” or Peace be with you.
“The persecution of Christians in Iraq and Syria is heinous and totally unacceptable to any sane human being. But we should not forget that the Muslims have borne the brunt of these extremists,” Nahdi said during his speech.
Nahdi also spoke about growing anger among young Muslims in Britain in reaction to criticism that they face because of the actions of extremists they have nothing to do with “thousands of miles away”.
“All the pressure on us is to try and justify things that are unjustifiable,” he said, calling for peaceful existence and joint “fight against ignorance” by Christians and Muslims.
Also on Tuesday, Nahdi wrote in an article published in The Guardian newspaper that he hopes his appearance “as the first Muslim to address the General Synod shows that followers of these great religions can be allies”.
