2. Bosnia arrests 15 suspected jihadists

BOSNIAN police arrested 15 people Wednesday on charges of joining or aiding the flow of European-based Islamists to the wars in Syria and Iraq.

“Fifteen people were arrested” in an operation across the capital Sarajevo and several other Bosnian towns, Kristina Jozic, a spokeswoman for the state police agency SIPA, said.

6. BBC: Reported Ebola deaths approaching 2000

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says more than 1,900 people have now died in West Africa’s Ebola outbreak.

WHO head Margaret Chan said there were 3,500 confirmed or probable cases in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

“The outbreaks are racing ahead of the control efforts in these countries,” she said.

On Thursday the WHO is holding a meeting to examine the most promising treatments and to discuss how to fast track their testing and production.

7. Al-Qaeda chief Zawahiri launches al-Qaeda in South Asia

Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has announced in a videoed message the creation of an Indian branch of his militant group to “raise the flag of jihad” across South Asia.

In the 55-minute video posted online, Zawahari pledged renewed loyalty to Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

Correspondents say his stated allegiance is an apparent snub to Islamic State (IS) militants.

8. Many muslims in Denmark would prefer to live in an Islamic state.

“The extremist group ISIS “probably” won’t be defeated under the current Obama administration, Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday. “This, as the President has said, is going to have to be a sustained effort,” Blinken said. “It’s going to take time, and it will probably go beyond even this administration to get to the point of defeat.”

After the beheading of journalist Steven Sotloff by ISIS militants, Obama faced a chorus of bipartisan calls from Congress to act more aggressively and come up with a concrete strategy to combat ISIS, beyond the ongoing targeted airstrikes in Iraq…”

“An American college graduate from Boston, who has been on the run from the FBI for years, is suspected of joining ISIS and leveraging his computer skills to spread the Iraqi terror group’s propaganda on social media, a senior law enforcement official told ABC News.

Ahmad Abousamra, a dual American-Syrian citizen, was born in France in 1981 but grew up in the upscale Boston suburb of Stoughton under the watchful eye of his father, who was a prominent endocrinologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He attended the private Xaverian Brothers Catholic high school in Westwood up until his senior year when he transferred to Stoughton High. There he was on the honor roll, school officials said, and went on to make the Dean’s List at Northeastern University…”

  3. Saudi Sentences American, 23 Others for Terrorism (abcnews, Sept 3, 2014)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/saudi-sentences-american-23-terrorism-25236709

“A court in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday sentenced an American and 23 other people to prison on charges they created a terrorist cell and planned attacks on foreigners and oil pipelines. The official Saudi Press Agency reported that their sentences range from two to 27 years in prison for planning attacks against Saudi Arabia and its smaller neighbor of Bahrain.

The state report said the U.S. national was sentenced to 17 years prison, six of which are for cyber-crimes. He was ordered deported after completing his sentencing. The years he has already spent in prison will be counted as part of his sentencing.
State media did not release any names, did not disclose further details on when the attacks were planned and did not say when the men had been arrested. All have 30 days to appeal.

The group also includes one Yemeni while the rest are Saudi. The Specialized Criminal Court, created in 2008 to try terrorism cases, slapped them with travel bans after prison.Other charges against various members of the group include financing terrorism, embracing “deviant ideology”, disobeying the king, using the media to support terrorism, providing shelter to wanted people and training for combat.

Countries around the world are growing increasingly concerned that battle-hardened extremist fighters are training a new generation of international fighters that could launch attacks back home. Those fears have gained urgency because of the horrific methods of Islamic State fighters in Syria and Iraq.

Saudi Arabia, which at times turned a blind eye to its citizens taking up arms against its foes in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, criminalized fighting in conflicts abroad this year…”

  4. Kerry: ‘The Real Face Of Islam Is A Peaceful Religion’ [VIDEO]

Secretary of State John Kerry took pains to separate the brutal Islamic terror organization ISIS from its broader religious affiliation on Wednesday, taking time out from a statement on beheaded journalist Steven Sotloff to claim that “the real face of Islam is a peaceful religion.”

Kerry spoke to a largely-Islamic audience at the State Department Wednesday, which had assembled to recognize State’s new “special representative for Muslim communities,” Shaarik Zafar. But the planned event was overshadowed by the brutal beheading of Sotloff by ISIS fighters in Iraq, pushing the secretary to again publicly condemn the group.

“Those who have murdered James Foley and Steven Sotloff in Syria need to know that the United States will hold them accountable, no matter how long it takes,” he warned in his speech.

“But here today, what is really important — and I want to take advantage of this podium and of this moment, to underscore as powerfully as I know how — that the face of Islam is not the butchers who killed Steven Sotloff,” he continued, to immediate applause. “That’s [ISIS].”

“The face of Islam is not the nihilists who know only how to destroy, not to build,” Kerry went on. “It’s not masked cowards whose actions are an ugly insult to the peaceful religion that they violate every single day with their barbarity, and whose fundamental principles they insult with their actions.”

“The real face of Islam is a peaceful religion based on the dignity of all human beings,” the secretary asserted. “It’s one where Muslim communities are leading the fight against poverty. It’s one where Muslim communities are providing basic health care and emergency assistance on the frontlines of some of our most devastating humanitarian crises.”

President George W. Bush often explained to the American people that Islam was a peaceful religion, claiming “Islam is peace” five days after the September 11, 2001 attacks. He still felt compelled to make that assertion at the end of his term, following nearly eight years of war against Islamic terrorism.

President Barack Obama has also felt it necessary to educate Americans on Islam’s peaceful nature. “The religion teaches peace, justice, fairness and tolerance,” he said in 2010. “All of us recognise that this great religion cannot justify violence.” And in July 2014 he declared that Islam shares “the values of peace” with other religions and cultures.

U S Sec of State John Kerry discusses ISIS in Iraq at News Conference in Kabul

    • John Kerry: Scripture Says U.S. Should Protect Muslim Countries Against Global Warming

Wednesday at a ceremony to appoint Texas lawyer Shaarik Zafar to be special representative to Muslim communities, Secretary of State John Kerry said it was the United States’ Biblical “responsibility” to “confront climate change,” including to protect “vulnerable Muslim majority counties.”

Kerry said Scripture, in particular the Book of Genesis, make clear it is our “duty” to protect the planet and we should look at Muslim countries “with a sense of stewardship of earth,” adding, “That responsibility comes from God.”

A woman has been found ‘beheaded’ in a back garden in north London after witnesses said a man went “on the loose with a machete”.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing in Nightingale Road, Edmonton just after 1pm today.

They found a woman collapsed in the garden of a property.

There is no suggestion the killing had a terrorist motive, the Press Association reported.

  10. Official: American May Be Key in ISIS Social Media Blitz

An American college graduate from Boston, who has been on the run from the FBI for years, is suspected of joining ISIS and leveraging his computer skills to spread the Iraqi terror group’s propaganda on social media, a senior law enforcement official told ABC News.

There he was on the honor roll, school officials said, and went on to make the Dean’s List at Northeastern University.

But Abousamra’s life changed drastically in 2004 when prosecutors say he and co-conspirators traveled to the Middle East with the goal of fighting and killing Americans in Iraq.

Once abroad, two alleged co-conspirators of Abousamra’s, Tarek Mehanna and another unidentified individual, worked as effectively the “media wing” of al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), a 2009 indictment against Abousamra and Mehanna says. AQI later would evolve into the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

[…]Terrorism observers have noted ISIS’s media savvy, from viral meme-like postings and hashtag campaigns on Twitter to elaborate full-production videos – efforts that can multiply the perception of ISIS’s breadth and power in Syria and Iraq.

“ISIS understands very well that in order for an act of terrorism to be effective, it needs to actually terrorize people,” said Peter Neumann, Director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR). “The act of communication that follows the act of violence is almost as important as the act of violence itself.”

  11. Court chides Belgium over terror suspect Nizar Trabelsi

The European Court of Human Rights says Belgium was wrong to extradite a Tunisian terror suspect to the US, where he is accused of plotting to kill Americans abroad.

Nizar Trabelsi, once a professional footballer in Germany, faces a possible life sentence in the US with no prospect of review, the court said.

An irreducible life term breaches the “prohibition of torture” article in the European Convention on Human Rights.

Trabelsi was jailed in Belgium in 2003.

He is now in prison in the US, facing further terror charges, having been extradited last October.

In Belgium he was found guilty of planning to attack a Nato air base, Kleine Brogel. US military staff work at the base in Belgium and it houses nuclear missiles.

The US indictment says he met al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in early 2001 – the year that al-Qaeda carried out devastating attacks in the US. Trabelsi was arrested in Brussels just two days after those attacks.

The court ruling in Strasbourg on Thursday also found that Belgium had violated Trabelsi’s “right of individual application”.

Article 34 of the convention prohibits authorities from interfering with a suspect’s right of appeal. The court found that Belgium had made it more difficult for him to exercise that right, by keeping him in solitary confinement and with limited contact with the outside world.

The judges told Belgium to pay him 60,000 euros (£48,000; $79,000) in damages and 30,000 to cover legal costs.
