3. ISIS Is About to Destroy Biblical History in Iraq
Last month, a new marauder descended on Nineveh and the nearby city of Mosul. He, too, came down like the wolf on the fold, but his cohorts brandished Kalashnikovs from pickup trucks, not shining spears; their banners were the black flags of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham.
The risk now—the virtual certainty, in fact—is that irreplaceable history will be annihilated or sold into the netherworld of corrupt and cynical collectors.
Soon afterward the minions of the self-appointed caliph of the freshly self-declared Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, paid a visit to the Mosul Museum. It has been closed for years for restoration, ever since it was looted along with many of Iraq’s other institutions in the wake of the culturally oblivious American-led invasion of 2003. But the Mosul Museum was on the verge of reopening, at last, and the full collection had been stored there.

5. Now this one rocks the mega-mosque. A guy wearing a costume was arrested in the main meccan mosque for being a distraction.

US diplomat Tom Malinowski expelled from Bahrain (BBC, July 7, 2104)
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-28204511
“A US diplomat has been ordered to leave Bahrain after meeting with members of a leading Shia opposition group, say Bahrain officials. Tom Malinowski, US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, went to Bahrain on Sunday.
While there, he met with members of Al Wifaq, a move which the the Foreign Ministry of Bahrain says intervened in the country’s domestic affairs.
Protests by members of the majority Shia population have been ongoing.
Mr Malinowski “held meetings with a particular party to the detriment of other interlocutors, thus discriminating between one people, contravening diplomatic norms and flouting normal interstate relations”, state news agency BNA reported….”

5/ Looked like the return of Muammar Qaddafi.
3/ This sort of event used to make a good argument for European colonial plunderers never giving any of the stuff back. But does it really matter now? The way things are going, a Muslim will blow up the Assyrian collection in the British Museum sooner or later, probably with a surgically-implanted bomb. Talk about a target-rich environment. And I see from the floor plan that the goodies the Empire looted from King Sennacherib’s palace are conveniently distant from the Islamic Room.
Afraid you’re right, don.
It just kills me, though. One of the most inspiring moments in my life was seeing the Tutankhamum exhibit when it was in London.
There was a highly stylized Golden Calf.
Or calf-like, dainty beastie I could see myself worshipping only a few short millennia ago.
I was a kid steeped in Bible. There in front of me were the breast-plates, the tables — designs spelled out in those boring stretches of Exodus and Numbers — All of it opened a whole new world for me.
I’ve been fortunate to visit Tut in his Cairo home, and I hope that’s becoming a reasonable thing to do again with the new government, and that the boy king can look forward to another 3,000 years without being smashed in or melted down.
Some of this stuff is going into the private collections of very wealthy people. Like those who used to live in tents until oil money put flags on those tents.
Once stowed away, we won’t see them again. As good as lost.
The lose of the historical artifacts is one of the major crimes of this new world war, unfortunately the people who are suppose to be working to protect them are too politically correct to try and do anything.
