Iraq’s most senior Shia cleric has issued a call to arms while Sunni-led insurgents seize more towns.

The call by a representative of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani came during Friday prayers, as the militants widened their grip in the north and east, and threatened to march south.

The deadly power struggle between these two rival versions of the same faith has flared into life as Sunnis in the extremist terror group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) advance on Baghdad, where flailing prime minister Nouri al-Maliki – who is Shia – begged his parliament to declare a state of emergency.

It is a battle being watched with trepidation throughout the Middle East, where the escalation of the traditional Sunni/Shia conflict threatens governments and national borders.

Already, ISIS has effectively established its own nation state – or Islamic caliphate – which spreads across the north of Syria and Iraq, taking no heed of the border between the countries.

5. Tanks roll into Ukraine despite Putin’s promise: Russia accused of stepping in while the West is distracted by Iraq

Russia was accused of sending tanks into Ukraine for the first time yesterday while the West’s attention was diverted by the chaos in Iraq.

The development threatens to destroy the tentative peace process just when the US and EU had hoped Vladimir Putin had agreed to ease tension.

Three T-72 tanks were in Snizhne, some 13 miles inside Ukraine, backed up by armoured personnel carriers, claimed Kiev. It was initially not clear if the tanks were Russian or under  the control of separatist forces sympathetic  to Moscow.

Russia uses T-72 tanks but Ukraine does not.

6. Planeloads of American diplomats and contractors EVACUATE from northern Iraq as Obama says he ‘won’t rule out anything’ in stopping jihadist violence spreading throughout the country

Three planeloads of Americans have been evacuated from a major Iraqi air base north of Baghdad as Al Qaeda-aligned militants have toppled cities in the country’s north and threaten to advance toward Baghdad.

The planes, loaded with diplomats and contractors stationed at an Iraqi airbase in Balad, flew out amid fears that the base could be surrounded by the militants.

The passengers included 12 U.S. government officials and military personnel who have been training Iraqi forces to use fighter jets and surveillance drones.

Thank you Wrath of Khan, UK Pete, Bains, Don L, and all. I am pretty confident there will be more today. As the Islamic faith has at it’s core, hatred, violence, Supremacism, conquest and a structure that may well have been the model for modern day organized crime, its unlikely that more events which require examination and comment will not occur today.

    Al-Husainy said he met with public safety officials, including the FBI and Dearborn’s police chief, yesterday.

    A group of local imams are convening tonight in Dearborn to discuss how to handle the situation.

    The types are: T-72MP, T-72AM, T-72AG, T-72AMG, T-72-120, T-72E, BMT-72, BTS-5B.
