Islam, geopolitics and Islam-deniers for June 11 2014 – 3

1. Turkey ‘on alert’ as NATO convenes on ISIL invasion in northern Iraq

The state of Turkey was “on alert” late June 11 after 80 Turkish citizens, including Consul General Öztürk Y?lmaz, have been taken hostage by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, as Turkish authorities talked to their U.S. counterparts on phone and briefed their NATO allies at an emergency meeting.

2. New License Plates Say ‘South Carolina Stands With Israel’

Now, South Carolina residents have an additional option when it comes to making a statement with their official state license plates: showing their support for Israel.

The Jewish Pressreports that the vanity plate costs $7 and “those special license plates will have the message: ‘South Carolina Stands With Israel.’ The graphic on the plate will have intertwined flags of Israel and South Carolina.”

3. More evidence of a newly militarized police force.

(For those interested in the basics of state craft, a fundamental of democracy is not confusing the military with the police)

4. Law Society risks ‘undermining’ rule of law by promoting sharia, Chris Grayling warns

Chris Grayling, Secretary of State for Justice

Chris Grayling said: ‘The Law Society will need to satisfy themselves that nothing in the course of guidance undermines the principle that Sharia law is not part of the law of England and Wales.’ Photo: Geoff Pugh for The Telegraph

Chris Grayling, the Justice Secretary, has warned the Law Society that it must not “undermine” British legal principles with its new guidance and training for lawyers in Sharia law.

The Law Society, the professional body which represents solicitors, has faced criticism for running training courses in Sharia and for publishing guidance to help lawyers draw up ‘Sharia compliant’ wills.

Thank you M, ML, UK Pete, Buck and all the tipsters today.

  2. UK – Trojan Horse: Birmingham academy spent £50,000 on trip to Saudi Arabia using travel firm linked to school director

Oldknow Academy took 40 students and staff to Mecca and Medinah last year.

The Education Funding Agency (EFA) had raised financial concerns about two publicly-funded Muslim-only trips to Saudi Arabia in 2012 and 2013, the latter costing £47,200.

The school had described the Saudi Arabia tours as ‘‘modern foreign languages trips’’ with the ‘‘double benefit’’ of allowing students to perform Umrah, a religious pilgrimage.

Last May 40 students and eight staff travelled to Mecca and Medinah. The ten-day visit involved stays at luxury five-star hotels.
