A small detail in EuroPol’s report “European Union Terrorism Situation and Trend Report 2014” underlines the cowardice of the EU when it comes to confronting Islamic terrorism.
“European Union (EU) Member States reported no terrorist attacks specifically classified as religiously inspired terrorism for the 2013 period. However, in at least two attacks, the role of religious radicalisation appears to be evident. On 22 May 2013, an off-duty British army soldier was murdered in the vicinity of army barracks in Woolwich, London (UK). The attackers initially used a car to run him over, before repeatedly stabbing him with bladed weapons. The two suspects – British Muslim converts of Nigerian descent – were arrested at the scene. Further arrests of their associates were made from May onwards. The assailants were self-organised but previously had links to radical Muslim groups in the UK (al-Muhajiroun and its later incarnation, the Sharia4 movement).16 One of the suspects was also believed to have attempted to travel to Somalia in the past in order to join Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahidin (HSM, Young Mujahidin Movement). Both attackers were convicted of the murder in December 2013.
On 25 May 2013, just three days after the aforementioned attack, a French soldier was targeted in a non-fatal knife attack in La Défense near Paris (France) by an individual who converted to Islam and radicalised in an extremely short period of time.”

USA – [Muslim] woman arrested for attacking 9-year-old [Muslim ] girl at school with hammer
Oakland – California – A third-grader was beaten with a hammer inside a local school restroom. The [ Muslim ] woman police say is responsible is another child’s mother and an old grudge may have been what fueled the attack.
The young girl was brought to the ER at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland but we’re told her injuries are not serious.
The school district identified the woman as Haseemah Diame, a well-known volunteer at the school. Both Diame and her victim are new immigrants from Yemen.

I am not certain that reason compels us to be contemptuous of all religion. The fact is that the most successful humans from a Darwinian point of view are religious. Christian, and unfortunately for our values, Islamic. It seems that secular humanism or just current post-Christian secularism allows the kind of self discipline and self sacrifice required to marry for more than temporary hedonism and raise children. This is especially true of Christianity as Islam tends to warp things into hedonism despite its rhetoric to the contrary.
At times, it seems life is about a series of necessary illusions. Esthetics, love and so on among them. So a set of myths, or as I prefer to look at them, organizational principles that allow people to function well while making counter-intuitive or counter-hedonistic choices are fully reasonable things that religion can offer. Remember, just because a thing isn’t true does not mean belief in it has no effect. And as we will never know everything, its good to acknowledge what works as well as what is repugnant irrespective of the truth of its avatars and deity’s existence.

On CBS Face the Nation, David Ignatius of The Washington Post revealed what apparently was common knowledge in informed circles that such a swap had been under consideration four years ago. However, it was objected to by then Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullins. Further, both GOP and even several prominent Democrat Senators had objected to such a release. Ignatius underlined the controversy the prisoner swap created with these comments;
I think this is going to be politically controversial because the people who are being released, the five people being released from Guantanamo are very dangerous Taliban cadre. These are people in one case, the deputy military commander, in another case, the deputy chief of intelligence.
In two cases, the (UNINTEL), they’re people who worked directly to facilitate Al Qaeda during Al Qaeda’s time in Afghanistan. So for that reason, I’m told ,under Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and chairman of Joint Chiefs Mike Mullen, it was judged that these people were just too dangerous to let go.
And one thing that’s changed that allowed this release is that the current Secretary of Defense and Chairman had decided that was an acceptable risk. We’ll have to see details about how they will be held. How we can make sure they’re not back on the battlefield before this one-year period that part of the deal is up. It remains to be seen.
Also of concern was the position of Hillary Clinton who served as Secretary of State at the time of those discussions and presumably had knowledge of them. Further, David Sanger of The New York Times indicated that Qatar, which has relations with the Taliban, had endeavored to negotiate a deal for the exchange of Sgt. Bergdahl for the GITMO Detainees last year which fell apart. That the exchange was connected to the timetable for exit of US forces from Afghanistan. The Taliban had established an office in Qatar last year, aAnd reportedly secret negotiations began in earnest this past February.
President Obama following a secret trip to Afghanistan announced this past week maintenance of a residual force of less than 10,000, bringing home the vast portion of the US International Security Afghanistan Force troop contingent. The objective is to wind up formal operations in Afghanistan and withdraw completely before the 2016 Presidential elections. At the Rose Garden press conference , the President said:
We are committed to winding down the war in Afghanistan, and we are committed to closing Gitmo. But we also made an ironclad commitment to bring our prisoners of war home. That’s who we are as Americans. It is our hope Sergeant Bergdahl’s recovery could potentially open the door for broader discussions among Afghans about the future of their country by building confidence that it is possible for all sides to find common ground.
