Britain’s new press regulations were roundly condemned across the world this morning as a threat to free speech.

The new rules left American commentators “horrified and shocked” at what they considered to be a “crazy idea”.
They said that the “shameful compromise” would never be allowed in the USA because it breaches the First Amendment.
The Kremlin-funded broadcaster Russia Today described the guidelines as a “threat to press freedom”.
The reaction came after the cross-party agreement was attacked by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the international body that polices human rights.
Britain, with its long running democracy, is often held up as a beacon of liberty.
Killer James Holmes ‘is now a Muslim who prays five times a day’
The killer showed off a lengthy, thick beard during a court appearance earlier this month, and a prison source has claimed it is a symbol of his new-found faith.
The source said Holmes has turned to Islam as a way of justifying his horrific murder spree in an Aurora, Colorado cinema on July 20 which left 12 people dead and 58 people wounded.

USA – Lawyer to push for 5 daily group prayers for Lindh, other Muslim inmates, instead of current 3
INDIANAPOLIS – A lawyer who helped American Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh and other Muslim inmates win the right to hold daily group prayers in a high-security unit said he’ll ask a judge to order that they be allowed to pray together five times a day, as Islam requires.
Chris Burke, a Bureau of Federal Prisons spokesman, said that since March 12, inmates of all religions housed in the Terre Haute federal prison’s Communications Management Unit have been allowed to pray together three times per day.
[…]Those housed in Lindh’s unit are considered extreme security risks and their interactions are closely monitored. Until this month, inmates housed in the unit were only allowed to pray together once per week or during Ramadan or on other significant religious holidays. At other times, inmates had to pray alone in their cells and hope to hear each other through the walls.
[…]it was clear that 32-year-old Lindh sincerely believed that Islam mandates that Muslims pray together five times a day and federal law requires the prison to accommodate his beliefs — which praying simultaneously inside their cells did not do. She also noted that Muslim inmates in other federal prisons were allowed to hold daily group prayers.
“A central tenet of the Islamic faith is the obligation for adult Muslims to engage in five daily prayers, or Salat,” she wrote. “By prohibiting Mr. Lindh and the other Muslim prisoners who hold similar beliefs in the CMU from praying in each other’s presence, the Warden has denied Mr. Lindh and these other prisoners the religious exercise of daily group prayer,”
Prison officials said during the trial on Lindh’s lawsuit that allowing group prayers every day would pose a security risk and that inmates had used religion as cover for gang-like activity, but the judge dismissed those arguments as insubstantial.

Myanmar – 2 dead – 3 mosques destroyed and burned in Meiktila
YANGON–Two people including a Buddhist monk were killed and at least three mosques were destroyed after riots broke out in a town in central Myanmar, police said Thursday.
Around 200 people fought in the streets after an argument in a Muslim-owned gold shop turned violent in Meiktila on Wednesday, according to a post on Myanmar Police Force’s Facebook page.
“One injured monk and Than Myint Naing, 26, who were being treated for their injuries died from their burns at hospital,” it said.
Police imposed a curfew from evening to early morning to control the situation.
“People tried to burn down the mosques,” one local police officer told AFP.
The unrest comes amid heightened concerns over Muslim-Buddhist relations in Myanmar, where communal conflict in the western state of Rakhine has left at least 180 people dead and more than 110,000 displaced since June 2012.
An initial report on the police Facebook page late Wednesday said anger spread after one man was injured during the row in the gold shop.
The report said a mob then descended on the area and destroyed some buildings.
It said six people were hospitalised, and that the Buddhist monk and a Muslim man later died from their injuries. A subsequent police report omitted the religion of the second man.

Ironically (but unsurprisingly as it is a British news article), it’s a completely crappy article that is a perfect example of British style journalistic incompetance. There’s absolutely no elucidation of what exactly has changed. No explanation of what the rule or law is or exactly how it has curbes the freedom of the press.
The journalist dodges the only imporant information by making the story about other peoples opinions about the event instead of the actual event – which he ignores entirely.
