I used to do TaeKwonDo and – despite the VERY STRONG principals of only using one’s fighting skills in defense – I am quite surprised this fellows colleagues (everyone attends some dojo under a master’s direction – even if just training for competitions like this) did not lay a beat-down on the fellow who clearly broke all rules of the sport by that kick. It is criminal assault – pure and simple.
Under standard competition rules – once you are off the mat due to being hit, pushed, out-maneuvered or just walking away – any actions is illegal (except a bow). In fact if you do not engage once a round has begun and move off the mat you will be levied penalty point for moving or staying outside the combat circle. The ref will caution you in case you don’t realize it but he will call the fight against you if you spend more than 1:30 outside the circle in a round. (I hasten to add is very hard to tell exactly in this shot as I know from camera lens type, distance and layout – can make a full floor configuration ie multiple fighting pads – disappear or seem completely flat with a telephoto perspective.) So nobody who walks away like this would expect a combat move against them. It is like a sucker punch.
On the other hand – it is also a rule that one never turns one’s back on any opponent – you bow at the end of a match, shake hands/butt gloves and walk away off to the side keeping adjacent to opponent until back to your team’s bench. This despicable action just reminds me of the last dirty trick in Million Dollar Baby.
I would call it attempted murder and the courts should also.
