Police have arrested the husband of an Iraqi woman beaten to death in her home eight months ago for what initially looked like a racially motivated hate crime, U-T San Diego reported, citing jail records in El Cajon, Calif., in San Diego County.

Kassim Alhimidi, 48, was booked into jail Thursday evening on one count of first-degree murder. He is being held without bail.

“After months of hard work, we determined that this homicide was a result of domestic violence,” El Cajon Police Chief Jim Redman said Friday, NBCSanDiego.com reported.

Shaima Alawadi, 32, was found bloody and unconscious with multiple skull fractures in her family’s home on March 21. She died in the hospital three days later.

    WASHINGTON: The United States plans a $6.7 billion sale of 20 heavy cargo aircraft and five refueling planes to Saudi Arabia, the Pentagon announced on Friday, in a deal to be approved by Congress.

    The multibillion-dollar deal includes the cost of training, logistical support, parts and associated equipment for the aircraft, said a statement released by the Defense Department’s agency for foreign arms sales.

    Notice of the deal was sent to Congress on Thursday, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency said, noting the proposed sale of 20 C-130J-30 Super Hercules planes and five KC-130J aircraft — an extended-range tanker version of the C-130s — would sustain Saudi Arabia’s “aging fleet.”

    Congress has 30 days to raise objections, otherwise the deal will be concluded.

    The statement said the sale would “contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.”

    Riyadh has significantly increased its military spending in recent years and in 2010 signed a $60 billion arms deal with Washington, the kingdom’s biggest defense supplier.

    And at the end of 2011, the two countries announced the signing of a $30 billion deal to provide Saudi Arabia with 84 new fighter jets, a move the United States said sent a “strong message” to the Gulf region.

    The Pentagon has announced plans to sell $6.7 billion in military aircraft and other equipment to Saudi Arabia.

    The sale would include 20 C-130 cargo planes and five refueling aircraft.

    The Pentagon says Saudi Arabia requested the planes. Officials say the sale would contribute to U.S. national security by helping improve the security of a friendly country. They call Saudi Arabia an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.

    The Pentagon also says the Saudi fleet is becoming obsolete and needs modernization.

    Congress must approve the sale.

    Saudi Arabia Seeks $6.7 Billion of U.S. Transport Planes

    Saudi Arabia plans to buy 20 C-130J military transport planes, five KC-130J refueling aircraft and related equipment from Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) valued at about $6.7 billion, the Pentagon said today in a statement.

    The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of the potential sale to Saudi Arabia, the agency said in a statement posted on its website. It said Saudi Arabia needs the airplanes to “sustain its aging fleet, which faces increasing obsolescence,”

    The C-130J-30 variant of the four-engine turbo-prop plane that Saudi Arabia is seeking has 15 extra feet of fuselage compared with the plane’s standard model, according to Lockheed, the plane’s maker. The extra space lets the plane carry two additional cargo pallets, according to Lockheed’s website. The KC-130 J refueling plane is also made by Bethesda, Maryland- based Lockheed.

    The proposed “sale to Saudi Arabia represents the largest foreign military sale of C-130s in the program’s history,” Peter Simmons, a Lockheed spokesman said in an e-mail.

    Lockheed Martin rose 64 cents to $90.56 at 1 p.m. in New York trading after climbing 11 percent this year.

    The possible sale also includes 120 engines, including 20 spares made by London-based Rolls Royce Holdings Plc (RR/), and 25 Link-16 Multifunctional Information Distribution Systems made by Rockwell Collins Inc. (COL) based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

    Saudi Arabia received its first C-130 in 1965, according to Lockheed Martin’s website. The Middle East kingdom now operates 50 older models of the transports, Simmons said.

    The proposed sale of the transport planes follows the Pentagon’s announcement this week that Qatar and United Arab Emirates are seeking U.S. missile defense systems valued at as much as $16.4 billion.
