August 8, 2009
Egyptian security forces uncovered a plot to kill Israel’s ambassador to Egypt and have arrested the suspects involved in the plan, Al-Masri Al-Youm reported Aug. 8. The suspects are members of the Zeitoun militant group, and according to security officials have been planning since 2007 to shoot Ambassador Shalom Cohen and blow up his home and the Israeli Embassy in Cairo. During their interrogation, the suspects claimed they were unable to get close enough to carry out their plan due to heavy Israeli security. The men also claimed to have trained in the Gaza Strip for the attack, and said they were also planning to blow up an Israeli-Egyptian natural gas pipeline, and Christian and Muslim religious sites in Egypt. Egyptian officials said the suspects likely did not have the capability to carry out the attacks.
