Ottawa U prof fights extradition to France on terror charges

Ottawa U is the university that allows leftist and islamic students to break significant laws, such as malicious pulling of fire alarms, to shut down anyone speaking on campus with whom they do not agree. I cite the attack on the attempted speech by Ann Coulter, and another by Ottawa U’s own prof, Janice Fiamengo.

It turns out that a sociology prof. there is alleged to have been part of a bomb attack against a Jewish community building that killed 4 people in the 80s and injured many more.

The Supreme court has upheld the extradition order and he should be facing French courts soon now.
Ottawa Prof. Hassan Diab is facing charges of bombing a Paris synagogue in 1980. Four people were killed and dozens of others were injured.

Israel to seek UN recognition of Yom Kippur as holiday

As Israel reached the 65th anniversary of joining the United Nations, it launched a campaign to have Yom Kippur recognized as an official holiday on the U.N. calendar.
The U.N. officially recognizes 10 holidays, including Christmas and Eid al-Fitr. Absent from the official holidays, though, is a Jewish one. A holiday at the U.N. entails a day without meetings, committee hearings or official events. Several among Israel’s delegation to the U.N. have complained that being compelled to show up to work on Yom Kippur is troublesome.

  2. Mass funerals for the dead of the Turkey mining disaster as fury mounts at Prime Minister’s aide who kicked mourner

Funerals for those killed in the Turkey mining disaster have taken place today as fury mounted at the prime minister’s aide who kicked a mourner.

Yusuf Yerkel, one of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s aides, has admitted kicking a protester who was being held on the ground by Special Forces police officers.

The incident, which has led to widespread anger on social media, occurred as Erdogan visited Soma in the wake of the coalmine tragedy.

  4. Syria conflict: Times journalists beaten during capture (BBC, May 15, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-27422530

“A reporter and a photographer working for British newspaper The Times have been badly beaten while being briefly held by a rebel gang in Syria.

Anthony Loyd and Jack Hill were returning to Turkey from Aleppo when they were seized on Wednesday.

They were reportedly freed after members of the Islamic Front, a coalition of rebel groups, intervened.

Dozens of journalists have been killed, injured or kidnapped in Syria since the conflict began in 2011.

The men had been on a three-day trip to the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, which has come under fierce aerial bombardment as government forces try to end a long-standing stalemate in the city.

They were on their way back to the Turkish border when their car was intercepted and they were taken to a warehouse in a nearby town.

Mr Loyd, a reporter for the Times, was shot twice in the legs, and both men were badly beaten to stop them trying to escape, the newspaper said.

The journalists, who have both won awards for covering conflicts, reportedly recognised their captors as being the same as those charged with providing them safe passage to the Turkish border.

The BBC’s Jim Muir in Beirut says it seems the pair were double-crossed by the very rebel group that was supposedly protecting them.

The men crossed the border to Turkey on Wednesday evening after being released, the Times reports.

  5. Nigerian villagers fight off attacks by Boko Haram (CNN, May 15, 2014)

“Residents of three villages in northeastern Nigeria took security into their own hands this week, repelling attacks by Boko Haram insurgents and killing more than 200 of them, residents and officials said.

Hundreds of Boko Haram fighters stormed the villages of Menari, Tsangayari and Garawa in the ethnic Shuwa-dominated Kalabalge District on Tuesday. Boko Haram — the group responsible for the kidnapping of nearly 300 schoolgirls from the same region — was met with stiff resistance as locals put up a fierce fight, witnesses said.

A month has passed since the girls were kidnapped, and the Nigerian government has been accused of not acting swiftly or efficiently enough to protect villages in the region threatened by Boko Haram.

In the three villages attacked Tuesday, gunmen arrived in dozens of all-terrain vans, armored tanks and motorcycles, but villagers quickly mobilized and engaged the attackers in a prolonged battle….”
