Romanian Supreme Court overturns election of 19,000,000 people’s votes

From YouTube description:

The favourite to win Romania’s controversial presidential election has launched an extraordinary series of attacks in an exclusive interview with Sky News, less than a day after the election was cancelled. Calin Georgescu, the populist politician who rose from obscurity to the brink of victory, said he had been the victim of a “coup d’etat” that had exposed “the corrupted regime” of his nation. He said the court that had cancelled the election, pointing to the impact of an alleged Russian interference campaign, was “a dictatorship” designed to protect “the oligarch system that wants to protect what it has stolen”. Need to know more about this. The election was cancelled? Who are the parties and what are their policies?

More later hopefully.

UPDATE: Reading the Sky News piece, anyone who has been paying attention can see this is the same Trump Russia Collusion line of action used against President Trump in 2016. Nearly identical, except in Romania they cancelled the election in ADVANCE instead of trying to undo it afterwards.

[…]

Romania‘s constitutional court released an unprecedented verdict on Friday afternoon that the entire election would be cancelled after naming Russia as the nation behind a hybrid attack designed to magnify Mr Georgescu’s social media campaign.

The court has also claimed that Mr Georgescu, who is not aligned to any political party, broke campaign finance rules after saying that he had spent nothing. I put both of these allegations to him directly, and he denied them both.

Firstly, on Russia, he said: “It doesn’t exist – there aren’t any – any – links between me and Russia. I’ve only got a relationship with Romanian people.

“They cannot accept the victory of the Romanian people. Here elections have been manipulated for 35 years. The power has been stolen.”

UPDATE 2: From a comment under this post that certainly seems totally reasonable and consistent with many other variables since 2008

Comment:
I’ve posted about this issue last week (friday-saturday) on jihadwatch.

Basicly insofar most of the people see it this way: the US sent a threatening/warning message that they are not really happy with Calin Georgescu winning the first round of the presidential election.
Because some of his policies:
– closing off the wheat corridor. As in they will not allow Ukrainean wheat into the country. Regarding Ukrainean wheat there is already a huge uproar in most of the neighbouring/region countries, because the Ukrainean wheat does not comply with EU standards and regulations. Therefore it is a lot cheaper than the locally produced wheat. Also other agriculture products. (Ukrainean agricultural products can be produced using banned chemicals in the EU.) This is not really just a romanian issue as i mention, most of the neighbouring countries are also unhappy about it, as their farmers are hit hard with the greatly reduced prices.
– the other one is that he plans to stop all military(and possibly financial) support given by Romania to the Ukraine.

Some folks see it this way, the US whistled and the Romanian Supreme Court danced to it and annulled an election a week after the election.
So it actually greatly hurt the trust placed in the democractic institutions, the goverment instutions and agencies. And also did not do good for US-Romanian relations.
It also undermined the trust with the EU and its institutions as well.

I am from the extended region.
when i wrote the above, i was called a russian troll though, there are still a lot of speculations going on as information is a bit hard to come by. However so far what everyone agrees on is that all this happened after they received the message from the US, where they are voicing their concern about the election results.

  2. This Croatian analyst offers an intriguing take. He groups the Ukraine, Romania, Syria and other regions as a crescent of chaos meant to bleed Russia a la Mackinder’s Heartland theory.

I don’t think he has worked it all out, but he is provocative enough to not dismiss. For instance how, he asks, did Syria fall so quickly after all it has endured. Its own trained 200,000 troops to maybe 30,000 jihadis and no resistance? Despite knowing what was coming? His trap theory remains unclear to me, though.

Ps- you don’t come across as a troll to me, ConcernedReader

    • I checked it, and based upon my security/historical/geopolitical studies there are a few wrongs. (The Russians don’t care about theory but care about soldiers and weaponry is one. This is simply not true, you can check the Red Army casualties later on when they were on the offensive. Or in the current Ukrainean war. Scorched earth tactics, to remove everything a foreign invasion force can use as a source to reinforce their armies have been used for hundreds if not thousands of years. It is a well known and established defensive strategy/tactic. This is how smaller countries won against the germans a thousand or so years ago. Some almost scorching 1/3 of their country)

I also have read/heard from other sources that Tartus and the Latakia bases have not been abandoned, but actually they are guaranteed to be left alone by the rebels. But we will see what the actual truth is, but i doubt they would allow tartus to be lost. (Most of western media reports on the ships are not present based on satellite pictures. Not to mention if they abandon these bases, they would blow them up, so nobody can use them after they evacuate. They would not make the same mistake that the US made in Afghanistan)

A third issue is, that he mentiones that Assad and his forces had 8 years to prepare. Which is true, however the major source of income, the oild fields were denied for them to use. As they have been occupied by US forces in 2019. And since then they have not been given back to the Syrian(Assad) government.

It still does not make his theories about a trap unlikely though.
Just i think the trap he thinks about is not the same with which the Russians came up with. Assad’s arrival to Moscow points towards something different than attrition tactics, but i have too many theories.

If you check out NATO, US, EU and so on communication about how the islamist rebels have taken over and liberated Syria within days…all their communication is similar. Syria can now be free and such. Also the syrian rebel leader, uses “revolution” these days instead of jihad, allthough i cannot be sure that it is because of deliberate media mistranslation or that he was “enlightened” by certain advisors.

What i am expecting in the immideate and foreseeable future, is islamistic terror events happening. En masse, and it will again not look good for Nato/EU/US, which also will effect the Ukrainean efforts.

There are a few other things he missed or did not hear about. But it is not surprising, for instance i did not know about the BYD and chinese investments there. (About the nuclear power plant i knew, i just forgot about it.) One would need to focus entirely on one region, but even then it is becoming impossible as things are so entwined. Is why usually geopolitical strategist have a lot of analysts at their disposal.

It does not help though that having debates about such issues(USA, RUSSIA, CHINA, UKRAINE, ETC.) is becoming near impossible. Because everyone is approaching them from a very high emotional perspective.

  3. Huh…did not really think it will get on the front. I just wrote it as a quick summary to make folks aware what is happening in this corner of the Earth/EU.

There is still a lot of speculation going on. But since friday this seems to be a consensus among some of the folks.

I cannot read the original romanian articles, but i can get to non-english source material from a few neighbouring countries.
Currently most of the media outlets are trying to explain what happened.
Depends on what kind of media you read, the interpretetation varies.
Georgescu is not really a candidate many of the neighbouring countries are happy about, as he is very chauvinistic(especially regarding the native minorities) and a fan of the romanian Iron Guard.
What this also caused is a huge constitutional issue, as there is no precendence or legal way on how to solve the presidential issue. Since Iohannis’s term will be over. So as to say a form or presidential interregnum is coming, this also extends to some other things regarding the state.

Seems like the joke about the bad and good democracy in action.

To add a bit of further insight, both the presidential candidates who got into the second election round are quite chauvinistic so the neighbouring countries are not really fond of either of them. (I am not fond of them either.)
But what this kind of election interference shows is quite troublesome.

The USA already has “openly” interfered in many elections in the region. Their Ambassadors, NGO’s etc. supporting/endorsing certain parties or their programs. Usually progressive and/or parties in opposition.
(This is why i was called a russian troll i think, i mentioned this another post.)

I find it a bit hypocritical that when i mention that yes, we know that Russia and China do interfere in the elections of the region, but so does the USA. It has done so for decades, so nothing surprising. (For instance even not accepting certain PM’s visits or visiting them can also be considered election interference.)
It is just this level of direct interference that we witnessed in Romania is what is actually getting folks a bit startled or riled up.

As an FYI, the EU also has threatened Italy that if they do not vote in accordance to their likes, they can lose a lot of EU money as well.
(Probably like how Hungary and Poland have not been given EU money for quite while. The moment that Poland elected a new government suddenly the payouts started to happen.)

    • Georgescu is not ?ovinist you idiot
I am Romanian and I speak the language and understand the need if my people
      You are an uninformed idiot
All of you that comment here have no f ING clue

      • Instead of railing against the people here, why not write a post explaining the situation. We are not your enemy.

In fact the post was supporting the voters of Romania and opposing the supreme court decision to negate the election.

From what little I understand, it looks to me that they pulled the same Russia Collusion hoax against the winning candidate they did to Trump.

If I have that wrong, I would actually appreciate your explanation of what did happen with supporting links.

One or the other of us is misunderstanding the situation here.

        • Ok
1989 December the west and the kgb started the “ revolution “ in Romania.Peole where killed
          Ceau?escu was killed
But the hydra body was maintained
In the 90 s Italians came and bought lots if land
Then the industry which was weak but productive enough for us was sold to foreign Investiors.
In fact this foreign entities after purchase they started to dismantle all that was jndustry
So from a self sustaining nation we become a consumer nation
Romanian that want to invest and create where showed the door and all the advantages where given to corporations
Agriculture which was good was starting to be decimated
Especially the animals with false corpses
( sacrifice to stop the spreading )
          Next chapter tomorrow

  4. Update:
Toni Grebla president/leader of the Permanent Electorat Authority (EAP) is likely to be called back.
The USR party (basicly their name means Save Romania Alliance), which is an opposition party has initiated the removal of Toni Grebla, president/leader of the Permanent Electorat Authority (EAP). (This is basicly an Authority/Agency that is overseeing elections. Interference, clean election etc.) The reason being (of USR) that why did not the Authority start an investigation against Calin Gerogescu, who has broken the regulations of the law/code that deal with the financing of the campaign(for election).

(There is also a petition signed so far by 50K folks to remove Toni Grebla. AEP’s leader is appointed by the Parliament so USR is asking for both the houses to be called for a meeting in order to have him removed.)

Seems that Calin Gorgescu had apparantly submitted 0 lei as expense regarding his campaign cost. It also seems that Georgescu had connection with Grebla, and Grebla’s wife has openly campaigned for Georgescu.

The Attorney General(well basicly the equivavelent of it) has started its own investigation regarding illegal campaign financing against Georgescu.

Georgescu stated that he did not have any kind of expense regarding the promotion that took place on social media sites. (Which lead to him to receive over 2 mio votes.) However secret service reports state that apparantly in the last few weeks during the campaign, the promotion material for Georgescu spread exponencially, and it was backed up by “a state participant”. (I am guessing they meant a foreign state here, and not some kind of a romanian state actor.)

The authorities held an investigation at Bogdan Peschir’s place, who was a supporter of Georgescu’s campaign, where they found 7 mio dollars.
They are currently accusing him with purchase of votes, money laundering, cyber fraud. He is also accused of violating the restrictions of the 2002/31 goverment edict’s 5th article on/about prohibition of fascistic, racist and xenophobic symbols and organizations.

tried to translate to my best abilities, but it is quite late here:)

      • If it is so, then feel free to correct me.
It took me about an hour or so to try to correctly translate a fresh article that was posted about the situation.
Of course it was not Romanian article, but translations of romanian articles.
If you know more about the issue, if you know why he is not a chauvinist, or why allegedly he is called so, feel free to correct me.
But i cannot really do anything to being called this and that.

If you know better, take the time and inform us, so we can see clearer.

Whether he is chauvinist or not though is beside the point, the most important thing is the direct intervention and interference of the romanian presidential election. Which is to this extent without precedence in the region. (At least for the past 34-35 years from US side.)

      • Calm down, Jan. You are among friends here. Just explain what is happening in Ru. We all want to hear from the grassroots.
