As I understand it this was a former journalist and trade unionist who started on the left in his youth and then gradually turned to more conservative values as he grew older, now he is dead at 59.
I do not think the term right wing really covers who this man was and the politics he hoped to introduce in Ecuador.
Unless opposing corruption and gangsterism is right wing in itself now.
