  7. Italy: Sicily calls for clarity on AstraZeneca vaccine following soldier”s death

The health councillor of the region of Sicily, Ruggero Razza, called for the ‘utmost clarity’ regarding the investigations on potential possible connections between the AstraZeneca vaccine’s administration and severe adverse reactions, including the death of a 43-year-old soldier serving in Augusta, who died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday one day after getting the vaccine.

“The first autopsy carried out on the dead soldier says the opposite, that is, at the moment, there is no connection with the vaccine. I believe that we need the utmost prudence. There are thousands of citizens from all over the world who have had this [AstraZeneca] vaccine’s administration. We must carefully check our words, what is being said, and have absolute confidence in scientists and the judiciary for the investigations,” said Ruggero Razza.

Out of 20,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine that arrived to Sicily, 18,000 have already been administered.

The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) will further investigate the vaccine in the next days.

  8. Belgium: EU to propose vaccine certificate with info on COVID vaccine, tests and recovery

The European Union is contemplating the introduction of a new COVID-19 certificate combining information on vaccination, recovery from the virus and test results, said European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders in Brussels on Thursday.

“We are working on a certificate, it’s not a passport, it’s a real certificate like you said but it is not only about vaccination, it’s about the recovery for the people who have had the sickness, the vaccination, or the test,” Reynders said.

He emphasized that the bloc wants to avoid discrimination between EU citizens.

Reynders remarks came after an informal EU justice ministers meeting. He announced plans to adopt the certificate proposal in the next college meeting on March 17 with a view to conclude joint discussions between members states before the summer.

“I have explained also to the parliament, to start if it is possible a fast-track maybe procedure in the parliament, but also a real urgent procedure in the Council to be able to conclude the discussions before the summer, to have a real binding instrument to the 27 member states about the set of data that is needed to put on the certificate,” Reynders added.

EU countries suspend AstraZeneca vaccines amid blood clot reports

Several European countries have decided to temporarily halt the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as a precaution.

30 cases of blood clots have been reported among vaccinated people in Europe, where to date 5 million people have received the AstraZeneca jab.

So far, no link between the blood clots and the vaccine has been established, says the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Nonetheless Denmark, Iceland and Norway are halting AstraZeneca vaccinations for the time being.

  12. BBC – Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine not linked to blood clots, WHO says –

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is safe to use and not linked to increased risk of blood clots.

A number of countries, including Thailand, Bulgaria and Norway, have all paused rollouts in recent days over safety fears.

The suspensions followed reports that a small number of people had developed clots after receiving the vaccine.

But the WHO has encouraged countries to keep their vaccination programmes in place.

  13. Austria continues AstraZeneca vaccine rollout despite blood clot reports

[…]”The decision is made by experts. At the end of the review, you have to respect the result,” Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said at a press conference here on Friday, insisting that he would be vaccinated with AstraZeneca.

“There was no causal relationship, so I trust the experts,” said the chancellor.

  14. Thai leader cancels his vaccination at last minute as nation delays AstraZeneca roll-out

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and members of his cabinet have cancelled plans to receive the country’s first Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine doses.

Their decision, announced at the last minute on March 12, 2021, came as officials said Thailand would delay its planned roll-out of a vaccine programme using the shots amid reports of blood clots among some patients who received it in Europe.

  15. CBC – No link between AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clots, says WHO

The World Health Organization says there’s no link between the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine and recent incidents of blood clots in immunized patients.

Health Canada also stated there’s ‘no indication that the vaccine caused these events.’

  16. CNA – Global evidence shows AstraZeneca’s vaccine saves lives; blood clots likely ‘COINCIDENCE’: Expert

The World Health Organization has said there is no reason to stop using AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine.

The assurance comes after Thailand and several European countries halted the rollout amid concerns that the jab may increase the risk of blood clots.

Dr Bharat Pankhania from the University of Exeter shared his thoughts on the continued use of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

  18. U.S. Rejects Requests from Other Countries to Share Covid Vaccine Doses: Psaki

The White House says the U.S. will hold onto the small stockpile of AstraZeneca vaccine although it has yet to be approved in the for use.

“We’re following the exact same process that we did with the other three now approved vaccines, Moderna, Pfizer and J and J, and just as we did with those vaccines, as we awaited for the completion of the clinical trial,” said White House Coranvirus Response Coordinator Jeff Zients.

“We have a small inventory of AstraZeneca so that if approved, we can get that inventory out to the American people as quickly as possible as we just did with J and J. So AstraZeneca, we’re awaiting the clinical trial and then the decision by the FDA and CDC.”

This comes as American allies are struggling to get enough doses for vulnerable populations.

The two-dose vaccine from AstraZeneca has received emergency approval from the European Union and World Health Organization, but not in the U.S.

Now U.S. partners are prodding President Joe Biden to release the supply, noting that the administration has lined up enough doses of the three already-approved vaccines to cover every American adult by the end of May and the entire U.S. population by the end of July.

EU member states’ ambassadors this week discussed the challenge of accessing US-produced doses of the AstraZeneca shots.

The German government said on Friday it was in contact with U.S. officials about vaccine supplies, but stressed that the European Commission had the lead when it comes to procuring shots for member states.

Even though it is not approved in the U.S., well over 10 million doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine are stockpiled in the country for domestic use and cannot be exported under the terms of the company’s agreement with the federal government.

Drug manufacturers that received federal assistance in developing or expanding vaccine manufacturing of doses were required to sell their first doses to the U.S. In the case of AstraZeneca, whose vaccine was initially expected to be the first to receive federal emergency use authorization, the U.S. government ordered 300 million doses – enough for 150 million Americans – before issues with the vaccine’s clinical trial held up its approval in the U.S.

As foreign regulators have moved ahead with approval for the shot, the U.S. has not dropped its contractual claim on the initial doses produced in the U.S.

That policy has also come under criticism from U.S. neighbors like Canada and Mexico, which have been forced to seek vaccine manufactured on a different continent, rather than across the border. Its enforcement comes as the Biden administration has purchased enough doses of Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson to be able to inoculate 150 MILLION MORE PEOPLE THAN ITS POPULATION by the end of the year.

The U.S. has also ordered 110 million doses of vaccine from Novavax, which is expected to file for emergency approval as soon as next month.

Coronavirus vaccine – weekly summary of Yellow Card reporting
    Updated 11 March 2021

This report covers the period 9 December 2020 to 28 February 2021.

    Events with a fatal outcome

Vaccination and surveillance of large populations means that, by chance, some people will experience and report a new illness or events in the days and weeks after vaccination.

A high proportion of people vaccinated in the vaccination campaign so far are very elderly, many of whom will also have pre-existing medical conditions.

Older age and chronic underlying illnesses make it more likely that coincidental adverse events will occur, especially given the millions of people vaccinated.

It is therefore important that we carefully review these reports to distinguish possible side effects from illness that would have occurred irrespective of vaccination.

Part of our continuous analysis includes an evaluation of natural death rates over time, to determine if any specific trends or patterns are occurring that might indicate a vaccine safety concern.

Based on age-stratified all-cause mortality in England and Wales taken from the Office for National Statistics death registrations, several thousand deaths are expected to have occurred, naturally, within 7 days of the many millions of doses of vaccines administered so far, mostly in the elderly.

The MHRA has received 227 UK reports of suspected ADRs to the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine in which the patient died shortly after vaccination, 275 reports for the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine and 4 where the brand of vaccine was unspecified.

The majority of these reports were in elderly people or people with underlying illness.
Usage of the AstraZeneca has increased rapidly and as such, so has reporting of fatal events with a temporal association with vaccination however, this does not indicate a link between vaccination and the fatalities reported.

Review of individual reports and patterns of reporting does not suggest the vaccine played a role in the death.

A range of other isolated or series of reports of non-fatal, serious suspected ADRs have been reported.

These all remain under continual review, including through analysis of expected rates in the absence of vaccine.

There are currently no indications of specific patterns or rates of reporting that would suggest the vaccine has played a role.

  21. Netherlands: 22 nursing home residents dead within two weeks of first mRNA shots

AMERSFOORT, NETHERLANDS — St. Elisabeth Nursing and Guest House residents received their first mRNA shots on January 30. What happened thereafter shocked staff and the families of residents.

At least 22 residents died in the last two weeks at the facility, according to RTV Ultrecht in the Netherlands. St. Elisabeth houses elderly people with dementia and other cognitive disorders. It’s unclear whether the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna shot was the culprit, as the country is utilizing both.

Board member Evelien Bongers believed the shots would eradicate the threat of COVID-19 within the facility. But it had the exact opposite effect.

“It is very intense and very intensive. For the residents, for their families and loved ones and for our staff,” she told RTV. “It is not only intense because of last week, but also because the virus has been asking a lot of us for so long.” The carnage may not be over, as more deaths “cannot be ruled out.”

Similar incidents are happening across Europe. A Spain nursing home stopped administering Pfizer BioNTech shots after 46 residents died within days of the first jab. At least 10 senior citizens in Germany died within four days after Pfizer shots.

Norway reported 23 deaths in early January, mostly elderly, after Pfizer shots.
