Reader’s Links for February 24, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

The Biden/Communist/Globalist murders have already started:

A week before, Texas begged for help and asked for DOE to lift federal regulations barring state’s energy output.

An Emergency Order from the Biden administration’s Department of Energy shows Texas energy grid operator ERCOT was instructed to stay within green energy standards by purchasing energy from outside the state at a higher cost, while knowing full well Texans could freeze to death in their homes with zero electricity as temperatures plunged into the single digits.

  2. I think people are waking up, and I know this sounds tired to say.

I posted something for sale on-line and received a response from a farmer who lives about a 7-hr. drive away. Without any prompts from me he calmly explained how weary his community was growing from government overreach. I did not interrupt so he talked and talked. He explained how economically devastating the lockdown was. How people were depressed from losing their regular lives and businesses. It was interesting for me to hear from another region unfiltered. And it occurred to me that the globalists were achieving their targeted uniform, borderless world, but not the one of their choosing. I think when Billy Gates and George Soros do their post-mortems to see where they went wrong they will have to admit their plan did not inject enough false hope into the populations. When one of the strongest, most resourceful members of society–a farmer–tells you he has had enough you had better listen. When hope is fading rebellion will rise, and unless the police state in your neighborhood is fully matured the truth speakers will resonate loud and clear, just like this great, weird, tattooed, big-mouthed, fat-lipped, arrestedly-adolescent and rebellious, heroic Chris dude. Karens will be swept aside. Even Karens in uniform may not be enough. The farmer ended our conversation by saying he had to go get his cattle in. I wondered what he thinks about synthetic meat.

This will be our summer of love. Emotional and economic dissatisfaction with self-serving governments and leaders are wearing thin enough for regular folks to mobilize, or at least mobilize if given a spark. Asking questions is not a crime. Thinking and speaking is not a crime. Saying that these things are not a crime tells you precisely where the real criminals are.

Forgetting the taste of freedom is not an option.

    • Even in Nazi Germany there were people who were “awake” , just like those in the USSR, both of whom listened to the BBC, with their illegal death sentence radios. But they could do nothing but watch and the rulers knew it.
In the west fighting for your own rights and those of your people has been bred out by the too many years of peace, affluence and propaganda. Add the blatant indoctrination of children and teenagers, and you have an absolute recipe for disaster in time of conflict.

    • It takes time for a rebellion to form, the American Revolution took between 15 and 20 years to build into open combat. We regulars on Vlad Tepes have been watching the oppression build for well over 10 years and it has just about reached peak frustration.

Down here in the States we are seeing the Democrats and their lap dog media show massive signs of panicking. In order to try and fool the people about where the political violence is coming from they have turned DC into an armed camp. Then they are vetting the Guard Troops that are sent to DC to see that there are no outspoken conservatives. This is a propaganda ploy but it also shows how desperate they are to shift the blame for the violence.

Next they are trying to purge all non Dem supporting modern liberals from the military. This will gut the military and once again shows desperation and fear of an armed mutiny by the Armed Forces. They are also working to purge the Federal Police of all non liberals. What they are doing with these purges is removing what control they have of the purged individuals. These are the individuals who have the training and experience to know that a counter revolution possible and to organize and carry out the Counter Revolution.

One of the things they will do is publicly talk about how long it will take before a revolution can start while behind the scenes they will be working to organize and carry out a counter revolution. Many of the Military and Police that are kept will know what is happening but their political masters who are not as familiar with military and insurgencies will be fooled. They are masters of disinformation but will fall for this disinformation campaign because it fits their ideas of what their domestic enemies are like.

      • My worry is that they will find a way to stop us communicating. My VPN takes half a dozen attempts to have a connection that accesses all the conservative sites I watch. The other 5 attempts I always have several missing , not VTB yet, but….
VPN servers like all else are home to some antiTrumpers and I am not the least surprised to find access limited. But when it becomes 100% policy as opposed to just being a leftist swine having fun then it will be a problem

  3. Court in Germany Sentences ‘Daesh Leader’ to 10,5 Years (sputniknews, Feb 24, 2021)

“A higher regional court in Celle, Germany announced verdicts in the trial of the alleged leader of the Daesh* terrorist group in the country.

Abu Walaa and his three co-defendants are said to have radicalised young people and sent them to battle zones, according to reports.

The court found the 37-year-old Abu Walaa guilty of support and membership in the terrorist organisation and sentenced him to ten and a half years in prison.

The three co-defendants, between the ages of 32 and 55, received prison terms of between four and eight years.

The Federal Prosecutor’s office demanded eleven and a half years imprisonment for Abu Walaa and between four and a half and ten years each for the other defendants. The defence pleaded for acquittal or significantly milder sentences. In the process, the court named a long list of other Islamists who are said to have been radicalised by Abu Walaa and a fellow defendant from Duisburg in the back room of his travel agency.

*Daesh (also known as ISIS/ISIL/IS) is a terrorist group banned in Russia”

  4. China Assails Five Eyes Intelligence Network ‘Axis of White Supremacy’ (breitbart, Feb 24, 2021)

“Members of the Five Eyes intelligence network were denigrated as members of an “axis of white supremacy” by Beijing on Tuesday, as China’s state-sanctioned media went on the attack just 48-hours after U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned “white supremacy” is an increasing threat to global security.

An editorial by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece Global Times — headlined “Five Eyes today’s axis of white supremacy” — said Canada, Britain, the U.S. and Australia were taking co-ordinated action against China.

Fifth member New Zealand was left out of the direct attack.

“They have formed a US-centred, racist, and mafia-styled community, wilfully and arrogantly provoking China and trying to consolidate their hegemony as all gangsters do,” the tabloid exclaimed, before delivering the racism allegation. “They are becoming a racist axis aimed at stifling the development rights of 1.4 billion Chinese.”

    The editorial continued:

Except for New Zealand, the smallest of the five countries and unwilling to get too involved in international conflicts, the other four are increasingly coordinating their attacks against China and have rapidly transformed from the intelligence-sharing mechanism into a political clique.

With a common language, a common historical background, and a coordinated attack target, such an axis is destined to erode international relations and allow hooliganism to rise to the diplomatic stage in the 21st century.

This is not the first time the tame Beijing mouthpiece has lashed out at Five Eyes intelligence network or its members.

As Breitbart News reported, last November it derided the alliance for daring to criticize China’s ugly crackdown on democracy in Hong Kong, spraying extra venom at Australia, which the Times sneeringly dismissed as a “vassal of the U.S.”

“The Five Eyes is more like a criminal gang in which the U.S. calls the tune and its pawns go fight for it or applaud it. The ‘little brothers’ dare not poke the bubble even if what Washington demands is unreasonable. As time goes by, this has become the ‘political correctness’ in the group,” the Times said.

Hu Xijin, Times editor-in-chief, is also fond of personally going on the attack:

The Times published the editorial in reaction to Canada’s decision this week to declare China’s treatment of its ethnic minority Uyghur population in Xinjiang an act of genocide and to petition the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to move the 2022 Winter Olympic Games from Beijing.

In President Donald Trump’s final days in office, the U.S. became the first to declare China’s actions in Xinjiang as genocide.”

  5. Madness in the Channel: Over 100 Illegal Migrants Brought Ashore in Two Days (breitbart, Feb 24, 2021)

“The migrant crisis once again hit British shores this week, as a stretch of warmer weather allowed a flurry of boats full of illegal aliens to set sail from France, with over one hundred migrants reaching the UK in the past two days.

On Monday, over 170 boat migrants in attempted to cross the English Channel, 49 of whom were brought ashore by the British Border Force at the Port of Dover.

An additional 77 migrants in four separate boats were taken ashore on Tuesday, with French authorities reporting zero interceptions, according to BBC reporter Simon Jones.

Despite the British taxpayer forking over an additional £28 million to the French to shut down the migrant routes, the latest crossings mean that over 300 illegals have already landed in the UK this year, the Daily Mail reported.

The migrant boats were said to have begun in the early hours of Monday morning, crossing under cover of darkness. However, the paper reported that the migrants were once again transported across the Channel by French authorities who met UK border officials halfway through the Channel.

The Daily Telegraph said that from the beginning of the year attempted crossings had risen by over 50 per cent over the same time period last year, from 630 to 950. The paper did note that border authorities in France and Britain managed to block 70 per cent of the attempts, up from 55 per cent last year.

On Tuesday morning, Brexit leader Nigel Farage reported that there was “madness in the Channel again today,” going on to claim “an illegal vessel landed at Walmer, Kent and 21 people are now on the run being hunted by the police.”…”

  6. Arrest Made Over Child Sexual Abuse Claims in Greek Migration NGO Programme: Report (breitbart, Feb 24, 2021)

“A former Greek theatre director was arrested over allegations of rape and sexual abuse, and is being investigated for possible sexual abuse of minor migrants who took part in a course facilitated by pro-migrant NGOs, a report claims.

Dimitris Lignadis, the former artistic director of the National Theatre of Greece, was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of sexual abuse of a 14-year-old in 2010 and another assault, but prosecutors have been called in to investigate other possible abuses of migrant minors from 2017 to 2018.

According to a report from Greek newspaper Proto Thema, Special Secretary for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors of the Ministry of Migration Irene Lovedakis called on prosecutors to look into any potentially illegal acts involving Lignadis and minor migrants who took part in a theatre course.

Antigone Lyberaki, the general manager of the NGO SolidarityNow, released a message on Facebook denying any connection to Lignadis saying, “Despite the unequivocal denial, some social media accounts continue to spread rumours that our organization and I personally had relations with Dimitris Lignadis.”

“We do not know what their motives are. Probably hostile to NGOs, probably want to cover up other relationships and disorientate justice investigations. In any case let them know that their fake news won’t scare us,” Lyberaki added.

Sofia Vgenopoulou, head of the Youth Stage at the National Theatre of Greece, spoke to Proto Thema saying that the programme involving minor migrants lasted around two years and that detailed information on the participants was kept along with the participating NGOs.

Vgenopoulou denied that Lignadis had been involved in the programme saying he did not teach in or design the programme and stated that the theatre had never received any complaints regarding the programme.

Sexual abuse of migrants in Greece has been suspected in the past with the US-based Mercy Corpos NGO placed under investigation over abuse allegations in 2017.

Last year in Italy, the head of another pro-migrant NGO was also placed under investigation for sexually abusing a migrant who presented photographs and video of the alleged abuse to investigators.”

  7. Lawmaker: Three people killed in clashes in southeast Iran (abcnews, Feb 24, 2021)

“Three people were killed over two days in clashes in the southeastern Iranian town of Saravan near the border with Pakistan, the semiofficial ILNA news agency reported.

An angry mob stormed the district governor’s office Tuesday, a day after shootings of fuel smugglers at the border left at least two people dead.

Tuesday’s ILNA report quoted Malak Fazeli, Saravan’s representative in parliament, as saying: “As far as I know, three people lost their lives while being transferred to the hospital.”

It was unclear whether all three people were killed in the border shootings or if one of the fatalities was a result of the chaos at the district governor’s office…”

  8. Suspected jihadist rebels kill 10 in northeastern Nigeria (abcnews, Feb 24, 2021)

“At least 10 people were killed and about 60 others injured in an attack by suspected jihadist rebels on the northern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, officials said Wednesday.

The governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum confirmed the attack and visited hospitals where the casualties were being treated.

“This is a new form of attack, totally different from the usual suicide bombing,” said Zulum. “It is worrisome and there is an urgent need to strategize to forestall further occurrence.”

The attack started at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday when deafening sounds of explosions and the cracking of shootings by assault rifles could be heard across the city, said residents of Maiduguri, the provincial capital of Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state with a population of about 800,000.

People were finishing work and many were preparing for evening prayers when the attack started and the outbreak lasted for hours, said residents.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack on Maiduguri, but it is suspected to have been carried out by Boko Haram, the Islamic extremist rebels who have been waging an insurgency in northeastern Nigeria for more than 10 years.”

  9. On February 10, 2021, John D. Guandolo, the President of Understanding The Threat wrote:

Friends, a number of people have sent me messages over the last week or so asking me how it is I continue to remain at Pease while all the world seems like it is going insane and crumbling around us. Here is my simple answer for what it is worth. When we realize there is very little in our lives we actually control – with exception of how we treat others and ourselves in our daily lives, and how well we preform our duties each day – and we consider there is a Creator of the Universe who is in charge and has got all of this under control, suddenly the realization sets in all is well. Not too complicated really.

Read it and choke as yet another part of the bureaucracy falls into line with the globalist CHEKA (FBI/CIA/DoJ etc.):

In yet another story purporting to confirm the left’s view of the world, Jana Winter reported in Yahoo News Friday that “the U.S. government is acknowledging for the first time that right-wing extremists were responsible for the majority of fatal domestic terrorist attacks last year, according to an internal report circulated by the Department of Homeland Security last week.” But as you might expect, it’s long on vague assertions and decidedly short on facts.

The report was produced by the Joint Regional Intelligence Center, which Winter describes as “a DHS-funded fusion center,” and was sent out to police nationwide. It claims that civil unrest and violence last year were primarily associated with “non-affiliated, right-wing and left-wing actors,” and that “right-wing [domestic violent extremists] were responsible for the majority of fatal attacks in the Homeland in 2020.”

That wretchedly written statement apparently says that most fatal attacks in the U.S. were perpetrated by both “right-wing and left-wing actors,” and yet “journalist” Winter and the “experts” she quotes all concentrate exclusively on the “right-wing extremism.” And to be sure, the report itself appears to be designed to give the impression that “right-wing extremism” is a genuine and major threat, while quietly admitting that there is a bit of violence on the left.

    • All one has to do is look closely at all the Muslims the Mail-in guy has appointed and you will understand where you are headed.

      Qur’an 8:72
“Those who believed, and migrated, and strove with their wealth and their persons in the cause of God, and those who gave them refuge and helped them, are the protectors of each other.”

“We need not rationalize Islam to them, need not appease their desires and distorted concepts. We will be extremely outspoken with them.”

“When we address people in this fashion and present to them the basic message of the comprehensive concept of Islam, the justification for changing from one concept to another, from one mode of living to another, will come from the depths of their being. But we will not address them with the ineffective argument, saying: Come from a system which is currently established to a system yet not applied; it will make only a little change in the established order. You should have no objection; you can continue to do what you have been doing. It will not bother you except to to ask for a few changes in your habits, manners and inclinations, and will preserve for you whatever pleases you and will not touch it except very slightly.

On the surface this method seems easy, but their is no attraction in it; moreover, it is not based on the truth. The truth is that Islam not only changes concepts and attitudes, but also the system and modes, laws and customs, since this change is so fundamental that no relationship can remain with the jahili way of life, the life which mankind is living. It is sufficient to say that it brings them both in general and in particular from servitude to men into the service of God, Who is One:
“Believe if one wishes or rejects if one wishes.”
“And if one rejects, then God is independent of His creation.”

“The question in essence is that of unbelief and belief, of associating others with God and the Oneness of God, and of Jahiliyyah and Islam. This ought to be made clear. Indeed, people are not Muslims, as they proclaim to be, as long as they live the life of Jahiliyyah. If someone wishes to deceive himself or to deceive others by believing that Islam can be brought in line with Jahiliyyah, it is up to him.”
“On the surface this method seems easy, but their is no attraction in it, moreover, it is not based on the truth.

Muruha – “flexibility” or temporary suspension of Sharee’ah to make Muslim migrants appear “moderate” and blend in until Muslims are numerically strong enough to enforce Sharee’ah.

Fitnah – seduce, tempt, lure, chaos, causing problems between people.

Imagine this – The world is faced with a pandemic, people lose their jobs, have great amounts of debt, along comes a person who promises them nirvana, a debt free life in exchange for just a few lifestyle changes.

      Taqiyya (Shia) Muda’rat (Sunni)
Tactical deceit for the purpose of spreading Islam —“Lie for Allah”.

      Kitman – Deceit by omission

Tawriya – Deceit by deliberate ambiguity

Taysir – deceit through facilitation ( not observing the tenets of Sharee’ah y making things easier.

Darura – deceit through necessity ( to engage in something “Haram” or forbidden such as drinking to exploit non- Muslims

You know what else is wrong with whites? They’re hung up on things like punctuality and rules

(Image: Karen Johnson, equity and inclusion administrator for the Washington State Department of Corrections)

White people, we have been hearing from the Left for decades, come flawed. The moment they leave the womb, they enter a world of privilege. In the white world, people succeed by virtue of merit — of being the best equipped or the most qualified. Such an approach enforces the inequality inherent in American society.

But the problems with whiteness are legion. New ones are being identified almost daily. Did you know, for example, that white people are obsessed with to-do lists, punctuality, and meaningless benchmarks like expertise?

These are just a few of the many keen observations made last November at a meeting of Washington Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee’s Equity Task Force. Karen Johnson, equity and inclusion administrator for the Washington State Department of Corrections, was presiding over the meeting dedicated to “removing health disparities by race/ethnicity/gender.”

    • and WORK ETHIC something of which many non Christian African males have utterly no comprehension nor care. In Africa the women did 90% of the work before the white man arrived and they still do most of it although now instead of sitting round a fire and boasting: “me great hunter”, the men now sit in a bar and boast “me great lover”.

FCC chair mum on efforts to deplatform conservative media; accused Trump of ‘assault on free expression’

Jessica Rosenworcel (Image: YouTube screen grab)

    By Chuck Ross

On Monday, the senior Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent out two letters: one urging cable and streaming providers to deplatform three conservative news networks, and another calling on President Joe Biden to make Jessica Rosenworcel the permanent chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission.

Rosenworcel would seemingly have some say over the proposal from the first letter, sent out by California Rep. Anna Eshoo, but she has so far stayed silent on the issue. Brendan Carr, a Republican FCC commissioner, called Monday for his fellow commissioners to publicly denounce the letter.

Rosenworcel’s silence is a reversal of sorts from 2017 when the Democratic FCC commissioner criticized President Donald Trump for an “assault on free expression” for proposing a review of broadcast licenses for NBC News affiliates.

  13. BBC – Amnesty strips Alexei Navalny of ‘prisoner of conscience’ status

Amnesty International has stripped the Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny of his “prisoner of conscience” status after it says it was “bombarded” with complaints highlighting xenophobic comments that he has made in the past and not renounced.

A spokesman for the human rights organisation in Moscow told the BBC that he believed the wave of requests to “de-list” Navalny was part of an “orchestrated campaign” to discredit Vladimir Putin’s most vocal critic and “impede” Amnesty’s calls for his release from custody.

But on review, Amnesty International concluded that comments made by Navalny some 15 years ago, including a video which appears to compare immigrants to cockroaches, amounted to “hate speech” which was incompatible with the label “prisoner of conscience”.

Alexei Navalny, who was almost killed in a nerve agent attack last year, is now serving a prison sentence widely seen as punishment for his opposition activism and big-splash investigations into the corrupt lives of Russia’s rich and powerful.

“We had too many requests; we couldn’t ignore them,” spokesman Alexander Artemev told the BBC, explaining that the team initially discounted Navalny’s previous statements – which he has not repeated – as “not relevant” in the light of his current, political persecution.

Amnesty’s offices worldwide, including that of the secretary general, were then hit with complaints from “so-called concerned citizens”, Mr Artemev says, in an apparently co-ordinated move.

Some of the calls to revoke Navalny’s prisoner of conscience status quoted a Twitter thread by Katya Kazbek, a freelance columnist published by the pro-Kremlin channel RT amongst others. She reposted Navalny’s controversial videos after his arrest in January, describing him as an “avowed racist” and accusing supporters of “whitewashing” his nationalism.

Ms Kazbek, a pseudonym, describes herself online as a “feminist, LGBT researcher, citizen of the world”, but her posts include praise of Stalin and also echo Kremlin claims that Alexei Navalny is controlled by the US government.

Since Navalny’s return to Russia in January after recovering from the attempt to kill him, other English-language Twitter accounts have regularly latched on to posts to slam him as a “vile white supremacist”.

In Russia itself, state media and officials have ratcheted up their portrayal of Navalny as a stooge of the West: an enemy agent working to destabilise the country.

In what Navalny claims was a crude attempt to tarnish his image, he was also found guilty this month of defaming a war-hero. Extensive coverage of that case on state TV and social media has likened him to a neo-Nazi.

A second notorious video from the early 2000s shows Navalny dressed as a dentist, interspersed with images of immigrant workers, calling for the removal of “everything that bothers us”, like rotten teeth.

But in a phone-in poll to the editorially independent Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy, just 1 in 5 listeners supported Amnesty International’s decision to delist Navalny.

Breakfast show host Alexander Plyushev called it “a huge victory for Russian state propaganda” and the move has already been hailed by RT editor Margarita Simonyan on Twitter, who noted the success of “our columnist” Katya Kazbek.

“Navalny has not publicly denounced his YouTube videos so our idea is that somehow he can relate to what he said,” Amnesty’s Alexander Artemev explained, though clearly uncomfortable with the decision and its implications.

“He cannot be a prisoner of conscience: that is someone who never advocates hate or violence or uses hate speech,” Mr Artemev argued, adding that Nelson Mandela had also been stripped of the status in the 1960s after advocating the use of force against the apartheid regime in South Africa

In January, Amnesty International decried Navalny’s arrest as “further evidence the Russian authorities are seeking to silence him” and called for his immediate and unconditional release.

The organisation says it will continue with those calls, and to “do everything we can do reach that goal”.

  14. BBC – Attenborough gives stark warning on climate change to UN –

Climate change could, within a lifetime, destroy “entire cities and societies”, Sir David Attenborough has told the UN Security Council.

“I don’t envy the responsibility that this places on all of you,” the naturalist said.

Sir David Attenborough hid the truth about hundreds of walrus falling off Siberian cliffs to their deaths a few years ago – he insisted this was due to climate change, but we now know he was well aware the tusked beasts fell because they were being stalked by predatory polar bears. Since he was willing to tell outright falsehoods about dying walrus to powerful elites at the 2019 World Economic Forum, I expect he’d say anything to advance his agenda with members of the UN Security Council. In other words, lots of emotional hyperbole from a showman who wants to leave a legacy. This is not the dispassionate science we require to make sensible decisions about the future. Attenborough spouted contrived nonsense about walrus and now spouts contrived nonsense about climate change. Susan Crockford

  16. yahoo news – China Imposes New Rules to Restrict Independent Online Content Creators

China has this week imposed its tightest restrictions to date on the publication of original content online via short video and “self-media” accounts, in the latest escalation of its ongoing crackdown on public discourse that strays from the party line.

The country’s internet watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), has issued new regulations requiring bloggers, influencers and content creators on public social media accounts, known as “self-media,” to possess a government-issued credential in order to publish anything on a host of topics, which came into effect Monday. Other social media categories such as trending charts, hot search lists, push notifications and short video platforms will also be impacted. The CAC did not, however, provide detail on what kind of punishment will be doled out for violators

The new rules are the first change to the country’s policies on the matter since 2017. That year, China technically issued regulations that required anyone writing about political and military issues to be officially credentialed, but enforcement was spotty and lax. That is now set to change with this new revision, even as the range of what must be approved has broadened.

“The regulators want to control the entire procedure of information production,” Titus Chen, a political scientist at Taiwan’s National Sun Yat-Sen University looking at Chinese social media policy, told the AP.

This latest crackdown appears to have its roots in Chinese officials’ concern about the role “self-media” accounts and online-only outlets played in spreading information about the coronavirus pandemic. In its explanation of its new measures, the CAC specifically singled out these sources for having “maliciously creating rumors” and “severely impacted the stability and harmony of society” in the early days of the pandemic.

In December, officials sentenced citizen journalist Zhang Zhan, who live-streamed from the pandemic epicenter of Wuhan in the outbreak’s earliest days, to four years in prison.

At a press conference in late January that paved the way for these new rules, officials trumpeted the need to “strengthen order in online publishing.” CAC head Zhuang Rongwen said that his organization should see the regulation of self-media as “a preeminently important mission,” and must “give our regulators teeth and violators a long memory.”

China is now home to 940 million internet users, a population larger than than that of Europe and nearly triple that of the U.S, according to recently released data from the China Internet Network Information Center. More than 99% of those users access the web via mobile, meaning that self-media accounts have become increasingly important information outlets.

Analysts say that the new policy revision even puts creators who actively try not to be provocative and to work within the bounds of censorship in the crosshairs. They expect it to hobble independent reporting while boosting the reach of government-approved narratives.

The rules were decided to “standardize and steer public accounts and information service platforms to be more self aware in maintaining the correct direction of public opinion,” the CAC said.

To this end, China’s various privately held online media giants have put out their own notices to users explaining more specifics of how the directive will be implemented, since the companies themselves are responsible for policing and enforcement.

News and blog platform Sohu told users that those without the right credentials could not publish or even repost any breaking news or commentary on current affairs. Other off-limits topics include “articles and commentary on politics, economics, military affairs, diplomatic and public affairs,” as well as “taking out of context and distorting the content of Party and national history” and even any “breaking news and commentary.” Baidu issued a similar statement. Weibo CEO Wang Gaofei said in a comment online that credential-less users could discuss news originating from official sources, but could not publish news themselves.

Online clean-up campaigns occur regularly in China. Last July, the CAC led a three-month campaign to closely monitor self-media. On Feb. 4, it launched a month-long special censorship campaign “to create a happy, festival, healthy and peaceful online atmosphere for Chinese New Year,” a goal it said was particularly important due to this year’s 100th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Communist Party. It comes just ahead of the country’s key parliamentary meetings on March 4, a period when internet censorship is typically at its tightest.

Besides the usual push to “clean up illegal and unhealthy information,” the bureau said it would seek to “strictly regulate the behavior of celebrity hosts on live-streaming and short video platforms” and urge them to “conform to mainstream social values” approved by the party. It would also address “unhealthy online social behaviors” like cyberbullying.

If vaccine passports are a ticket to pre-COVID freedom, why are some people against it?

    • Deutsche Pravada – What’s behind coronavirus vaccine skepticism?

The data shows that vaccines are safe and effective — they reduce the number of hospitalisations and deaths.

      They protect the vulnerable.

But still there are many people who don’t want to take the COVID vaccine.

Even medical workers at the front line of the battle against the corona virus.

      Where’s the skepticism come from?

    • itv news – UK government to review Covid vaccine passport

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tasked Michael Gove with leading a review into the possible use of vaccine certificates – or domestic vaccine passports – for businesses in the UK.

The UK government has said it will “facilitate” vaccine passports for international travel but this latest move could see ‘Covid status certificates’ used within the UK.

They could identify people with vaccine immunity which would allow businesses to ensure their employees have had the jab or could be used to allow people to enter hospitality venues.

    • BBC – UK considers “vaccine passports” to prove Covid protection

Boris Johnson has said that the UK government is considering whether to introduce so-called “vaccine passports”.

The document could take the form of a vaccine certificate, providing evidence of Covid protection, and the NHS mobile app could be modified to carry the information.

But the prime minister was keen to emphasise the difficulties involved and it’s an idea that he and other ministers have dismissed in the past.

Boris Johnson said he was confident that all restrictions in England could be lifted by 21st June.

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the government is “fairly optimistic” there will be “no dramas” in connection with the overdose of the Pfizer vaccine given to two elderly Queenslanders.

Two elderly Queenslanders were injected with four times the recommended dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at an aged care home.

The doctor has been stood down from Australia’s coronavirus vaccine rollout program after giving the two patients the incorrect dosage.

“I’m told that in the clinical trials people were overdosed with no ill effects, so the government is fairly optimistic there will be no dramas in connection with this,” he said.

Some countries are considering travel bubbles for the vaccinated.

So will those who aren’t vaccinated be left behind?

    • yahoo news – Israel adopts law allowing names of unvaccinated to be shared

Israel’s parliament passed a law Wednesday allowing the government to share the identities of people not vaccinated against the coronavirus with other authorities, raising privacy concerns for those opting out of inoculation.

The measure, which passed with 30 votes for and 13 against, gives local governments, the director general of the education ministry and some in the welfare ministry the right to receive the names, addresses and phone numbers of unvaccinated citizens.

The objective of the measure — valid for three months or until the Covid-19 pandemic is declared over — is “to enable these bodies to encourage people to vaccinate by personally addressing them”, a parliament statement said.

Israel, a country of nine million people, has administered the two recommended jabs of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against the coronavirus to roughly a third of its population.

As it emerges from lockdown, the country is restricting certain services, including access to gyms and indoor dining, to the vaccinated only, giving a so-called green pass to the fully inoculated.

That too has raised concerns about unequal access for those exercising their right to not be vaccinated.

During debate on the measure, Labor party leader Merav Michaeli accused right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “denying citizens their right to the privacy of their medical information”.

The statement from the parliament, or Knesset, said the personal information cannot be used for any purpose other than encouraging people to be vaccinated.

“The information will be deleted after its use within 60 days,” according to the law, and “a person who was contacted can demand that his details be deleted and that they not be contacted again.”

Haim Katz of Netanyahu’s Likud party defended the law as a means to promote vaccination.

“I’ve been asked what about people’s privacy: Is privacy more important than life itself?” Katz said in parliament, stressing the information would include nothing beyond the question of whether or not the person was vaccinated.

At a news conference, Netanyahu later called on Israeli citizens to be vaccinated in order to “return to normal life”.

The prime minister deplored misleading news about the vaccine, and said Israel aimed to fully inoculate 6.2 million people before the beginning of April.

“More than a million adults are not yet vaccinated,” he said, adding that “in the world, people are waiting for vaccines, (but) here vaccines are waiting for people”.

Israel has officially recorded more than 760,000 coronavirus cases and over 5,600 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

  18. Half of Asylum Seekers Entering Germany in 2020 Had No Identification (breitbart, Feb 24, 2021)

“According to information from the German federal Interior ministry, over half of the migrants who entered the country in 2020 came without any sort of identification paperwork whatsoever.

The information came as an answer to a question posed by libertarian Free Democrat (FDP) politician Linda Teuteberg, with the ministry stating, “In 2020, the proportion of first asylum applicants aged 18 and over without identity papers was 51.8 per cent.”

Teuteberg commented on the reply saying, “The fact that one in two first-time applicants cannot be identified on the basis of appropriate documents is a major challenge for our asylum system,” German broadcaster NTV reports.

2020 saw a total of 102,581 new asylum applications, over a quarter of them, or 26,520 applications, were for children born to asylum seekers in Germany.

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) stated that is had examined a total of 190,608 identity documents of asylum seekers and found that around 2.36 per cent or 4,488, were likely forgeries but it is unknown how many migrants submitted fake documents as many had multiple identification documents examined.

Despite the travel restrictions put in place to stop the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus, many countries in Europe still took in a large share of asylum seekers, like Germany.

In Sweden, over 9,600 asylum seekers arrived in the country during the first eleven months of 2020, a number that dwarfed its Scandinavian neighbours who took in significantly fewer asylum seekers last year.

In total, the European Union border agency Frontex stated that the political bloc saw 124,000 illegal migrants cross into member states in 2020, a drop to levels not seen since 2013.

Greece saw the largest drop in new arrivals, with a 76 per cent reduction in numbers while the Spanish Canary islands saw the opposite with an eight-fold increase compared to the year prior, as more than 22,600 migrants arrived on the islands.”

“Police in Slovenia have discovered 13 migrants from Iraq, including two children, who were hidden in a cargo truck, suffering from dehydration and a lack of oxygen.

Some of the migrants needed medical attention after they were found on Tuesday during a routine check at the border with Croatia, police in Novo Mesto said Wednesday.

The group had traveled for several hours from Bosnia and through Croatia, crammed in an airless, secret compartment inside a truck bearing Bosnian license plates, the police statement said.

The migrants were dehydrated and scared and some were already losing consciousness. They were given first aid on the spot while two people had to be taken to a nearby hospital.

The incident highlights dangers migrants face while trying to reach Western Europe, often with the help of ruthless smugglers. Thousands of people fleeing war and poverty in their countries have been stuck in Bosnia and the rest of the Balkans while seeking to move west.

“At least 41 people drowned over the weekend when their boat capsized in the Central Mediterranean, the U.N. said on Wednesday, the latest shipwreck involving migrants fleeing conflict-stricken Libya and seeking better life in Europe.

The U.N. migration and refugee agencies said in a joint statement that the dead were among at least 120 migrants on a dinghy that left Libya on Feb. 18. The shipwreck took place two days later, it said.

A commercial vessel rescued the survivors and took them to the Sicilian port town of Porto Empedocle in Italy, they added.

The tragedy started when the dinghy took on water about 15 hours after the migrants embarked on their perilous voyage, the UNHCR said, citing testimonies from survivors. Within hours, at least six people fell into the sea and perished, and two others drowned while attempting to swim to a boat spotted in the distance.

Later, the commercial vessel Vos Triton arrived, and attempted to rescue survivors in what the UNHCR described as a “difficult and delicate operation.” Many others died during the rescue operation, it said.

Only one body was recovered, and the missing included three children and four women, one of whom left behind a newborn baby who made it to Lampedusa., it said.

  22. Biden’s HHS Pick Advocates Sex Changes For Kids.

On Thursday, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee will hold a nomination hearing for Dr. Rachel Levine, President Joe Biden’s pick for Assistant Secretary of Health at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). There are plenty of reasons for the committee to be concerned about placing Dr. Levine in such an influential and powerful role.

During Levine’s time as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Levine and Pennsylvania’s Governor Tom Wolf drew headlines by engaging in a draconian campaign of threats against counties that questioned state COVID-19 guidelines and wished to reopen their local economies as local businesses fell further into despair.

Additionally, Levine infamously forced COVID-19 patients out of hospitals and into nursing homes and long-term care facilities, exacerbating the spread of the virus to the elderly and infirm, among whom it proved to be most lethal. Levine repeatedly downplayed this criticism, arguing it was a necessary part of the state’s coronavirus response, and that COVID-19 was already present in those facilities.

While Levine was actively putting these elderly residents at grave risk, Levine chose to personally play by a different set of rules by quietly removing a parent from a nursing home facility early on in the pandemic.

But while the draconian treatment of local Pennsylvania governments and the COVID-19 nursing home scandal should be enough to call Dr. Levine’s nomination into question, Levine’s commitment to imposing a radical gender ideology on our nation’s children should perhaps be of even greater concern to the Senate HELP Committee.

Most alarmingly, Dr. Levine has advocated for sex changes for pre-pubertal people, otherwise known as “children.”

A professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine, Levine has given lectures in various settings since at least 2012 on how to perform sex changes and gender conversion therapy on children.

According to Levine, children ought to be given the latitude to choose their own gender. Levine has advised adults to “try not to force them one way or other [sic]” and instead to follow the child’s lead.

“For prepubertal children,” Levine said in a 2017 speech at Franklin & Marshall College, “they might present in different ways. They might present at school in the gender they were identified at birth, or they might present as the other gender, or they might be more gender-fluid.” Levine has described children as young as five or six as “knowing” which gender they wanted to be.

Once, however, the child reaches the “young adolescent” stage, Dr. Levine recommends puberty blockers, a practice which Dr. Levine apparently followed at Penn State Hershey Medical Center as Chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine and Eating Disorders. In speeches, Levine describes prescribing puberty blockers and cross-gender hormone injections to children who expressed anxiety about the natural process of puberty.

Additionally, Levine has expressed doubts about the “controversial” requirement in some standards of medical ethics that patients receive psychological evaluations before undergoing such drastic medical regimens.

The current protocols for gender-dysphoric youth, Levine stated in a 2017 speech, outline a two-step process: the prescription of puberty-blockers during the first stages of puberty, and then, after continued counselling, the introduction of cross-gender hormones between the ages of 14 and 16. Then, around age 18, the patient may undergo surgery. But, as Levine noted, there are sometimes exceptions. In certain instances, Levine has said, surgical procedures may be performed on patients under the age of 18.

Levine, however, has noted that doctors may discard the protocol and significantly “accelerate” the process when dealing with “street kids,” who do not come into clinics with their parents, and who may be tempted to buy hormones off the street. In such cases, Levine said, doctors may skip the blockers altogether and go straight to cross-gender hormones, presumably at ages even younger than the 14-16 range described above. Though common in the past, the practice of foisting experimental medical treatments on vulnerable populations, especially minors, is condemned by most medical ethicists.

In addition to the Pennsylvania nursing home scandal, Levine has previously come under fire for other questionable judgments, including an order requiring that two-year-olds wear masks in public, a one-night suspension of alcohol sales in restaurants on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and a state recommendation that Pennsylvanians take up sexting or subscribe to a pornography service like OnlyFans in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

It is unclear whether any senators will question Levine on these judgments, or on Levine’s radical transgender ideology. Thus far, opposition to Levine’s nomination has been muted at best. Meanwhile, polls have shown large majorities of voters oppose subjecting minors to sex changes and gender conversion therapy. Senators on the HELP Committee may want to press Levine, and other Biden nominees to HHS, about their support for such radical proposals.

  23. CBC partners with big tech to combat disinformation online

The CBC is joining Microsoft, Intel and several other major media and tech corporations in a new initiative meant to combat disinformation online.

The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) was announced on Monday in partnership with its founding members which include Adobe, Arm, BBC, Intel, Microsoft and Truepic.

According to a press release on the matter, the initiative was formed to “address the prevalence of disinformation, misinformation and online content fraud through developing technical standards for certifying the source and history or provenance of media content.”

“CBC/Radio-Canada is joining the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) through our participation in Project Origin, which we announced on December 5, 2019,” CBC’s Corporate Spokesperson Leon Mar told True North.

“Disinformation is a global challenge. We need global solutions. CBC/Radio-Canada is working with like-minded media and technology partners to strengthen measures to fight disinformation, as part of our ongoing work to ensure Canadians have access to trusted sources of news and information.”

According to Mar, the coalition builds on previous work done by the BBC-led Trusted News Initiative alongside social media giants like Google, Twitter and Facebook.

“[The public broadcaster] has been providing technical expertise as part of its contribution to Project Origin, in cooperation with the BBC, The New York Times and Microsoft,” said Mar.

“CBC/Radio-Canada believes that trusted sources of news and information for Canadians are vital to democracy.” 🙂 🙂 🙂

The move comes as the Canadian government is also seeking to impose sweeping regulations on tech companies through Bill C-10, which would expand regulations on traditional broadcasters to online publishers.

In addition, the government is looking to introduce legislation which would force companies like Facebook to pay for Canadian news content hosted on their platforms.

Similar regulations recently introduced by the Australian government have prompted Facebook to ban Australian news content on its platform entirely, citing unfair demands put on the social media giant by legislators.

Liberal Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault also announced that new legislation would seek to regulate online hate speech and other forms of offensive content.

  26. NPR – Evangelical Leaders Condemn ‘Radicalized Christian Nationalism’

A coalition of evangelical Christian leaders is condemning the role of “radicalized Christian nationalism” in feeding the political extremism that led to the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

In an open letter, more than 100 pastors, ministry and seminary leaders, and other prominent evangelicals express concern about the growing “radicalization” they’re seeing, particularly among white evangelicals.

The letter notes that some members of the mob that stormed the Capitol carried Christian symbols and signs that read, “Jesus Saves,” and that one of the rioters stood on the Senate rostrum and led a Christian prayer. The letter calls on other Christian leaders to take a public stand against racism, Christian nationalism, conspiracy theories and political extremism.

    The letter reads, in part:

“We recognize that evangelicalism, and white evangelicalism in particular, has been susceptible to the heresy of Christian nationalism because of a long history of faith leaders accommodating white supremacy. We choose to speak out now because we do not want to be quiet accomplices in this on-going sin.”

    “Baptizing” extremism with religion

“I am not trying to assign to people something that they didn’t want assigned to them — that they were moving and marching in Christ’s name,” organizer Doug Pagitt said during a recent Zoom call with other signers of the letter. Pagitt, who leads the progressive evangelical group Vote Common Good, highlighted the prayer shouted from the Senate rostrum, which was conducted in a style typical of many charismatic and evangelical churches.

“People from our very communities called people to this action in the days before, unleashed them into the Capitol, and then chose to baptize that action in the name of Christ,” Pagitt said. “And this is our time where we need to stand up.”

White evangelical Christians made up a critical part of Trump’s base, and a majority supported him in both 2016 and 2020. A recent survey by the American Enterprise Institute found that 3 in 5 white evangelicals believe — falsely — that President Biden was not legitimately elected.

Prominent white evangelical leaders have been among Trump’s most vocal supporters. Several, including Ralph Reed of the Faith & Freedom Coalition and Dallas-based pastor Robert Jeffress, have condemned the insurrection but remained steadfast in their support for Trump.

Signers of the open letter calling out Christian nationalism include Jerushah Duford, a granddaughter of the evangelical preacher, the late Rev. Billy Graham. In an interview with NPR, Duford said she was “heartbroken” by the events of Jan. 6, a feeling she said she experienced throughout the Trump years as she watched many white evangelical leaders align themselves with him.

“It felt like this was a symptom of what has been happening for a long time,” she said.

“White evangelical brothers and sisters, where are you?”

During last week’s Zoom call, Mae Elise Cannon, of the ecumenical group Churches for Middle East Peace, called out unnamed evangelical leaders who she said have declined to sign, citing concerns including how it would go over with their churches or religious organizations.

“White evangelical brothers and sisters, where are you?” Cannon said. “There’s a few of us on this call today, but let me tell you how many people said ‘no.’ ”

Another signer, Kevin Riggs, pastors a small church near Nashville affiliated with the Free Will Baptist denomination, which he describes as “to the right of everybody.” Riggs said in an interview with NPR that he may receive pushback from other pastors for signing the statement, but he expects his congregation, which devotes much of its time to working with people facing homelessness, incarceration and addiction, to support him.

“I wanted to sign this statement just to say that Christian nationalism is not only wrong, but it’s heretical,” Riggs told other leaders on the Zoom call, adding that evangelical leaders must take responsibility for “rooting out this evil in our churches.”
the guardian – Evangelical leaders condemn role of Christian nationalism in Capitol attack

Pastors reject ‘perversion’ of Christian nationalism and say they do not want to be ‘quiet accomplices in this ongoing sin’

More than 100 prominent evangelical Christian pastors and church leaders have spoken out against what they call the “perversion” of Christian nationalism and the role it played in enabling the violent insurrection at the US Capitol in Washington on 6 January.

In an open letter released on Wednesday, the evangelical leaders say they are speaking out now because they do not want to be “quiet accomplices in this ongoing sin”.

They call on all church people to clarify that Christianity is incompatible with “calls to violence, support of white Christian nationalism, conspiracy theories, and all religious and racial prejudice”.

The letter, first reported by NPR, notes that the evangelical community in the US has long been susceptible to the “heresy” of Christian nationalism – the belief that the country is fundamentally Christian and run by and for white conservative Americans. The signatories blame that tendency on church leaders accommodating white supremacy over many years.

As a result the ideology of Christian nationalism was allowed to flourish and helped to legitimize the 6 January attack by giving participants the false impression that their actions were “blessed by God”, the religious leaders said.

The presence of Christian nationalists was evident during the insurrection. Rioters carried signs proclaiming “Jesus Saves” and “In God We Trust”, and crosses were erected among the crowd.

A video of the unfolding catastrophe filmed by the New Yorker magazine showed one of the seditionists saying a prayer from the rostrum of the US Senate. He said: “Thank you Heavenly Father for gracing us with this opportunity to stand up for our God-given unalienable rights … and to send a message to all the tyrants, the communists and the globalists that this is our nation, not theirs.”

Among the influential figures who signed the letter were Jerushah Duford, granddaughter of the TV evangelical preacher, the late Billy Graham. She told NPR that the events of 6 January had long been brewing. “It felt like this was a symptom of what has been happening for a long time,” she said.

White evangelical Christians remained remarkably loyal to former president Donald Trump in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. They voted for him on both occasions by about 80%, exit polls showed.

A survey by the American Enterprise Institute earlier this month found that 60% of white evangelicals continue to believe Trump’s “big lie” that last November’s election was stolen from him and that he should have been returned to the White House.

    • Sign on: Evangelical Leaders Statement Condemning Christian Nationalism’s role in the January 6th Insurrection

      Evangelical Leaders Statement
Condemning Christian Nationalism’s role in the Insurrection January 6

As leaders in the broad evangelical community, we recognize and condemn the role Christian Nationalism played in the violent, racist, anti-American insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6.

We recognize the damage done by radicalized Christian Nationalism in the world, the church, and in the lives of individuals and communities.

We know from experts on radicalization that one of the key elements is a belief that your actions are “blessed by God” and ordained by your faith. This is what allows so many people who hold to a Christian Nationalism view to be radicalized.

While we come from varied backgrounds and political stances, we stand together against the perversion of the Christian faith as we saw on January 6, 2021. We also stand against the theology and the conditions that led to the insurrection.

Over the centuries, there are moments when the Church, the trans-national Body of Christ-followers, has seen distortions of the faith that warranted a response. In ages past, the Church has responded by holding emergency councils in order to unilaterally denounce mutations of the Christian faith, and to affirm the core values at the heart of Christianity. It is in that spirit that we unite our voices to declare that there is a version of American nationalism that is trying to camouflage itself as Christianity — and it is a heretical version of our faith.

Just as many Muslim leaders have felt the need to denounce distorted, violent versions of their faith, we feel the urgent need to denounce this violent mutation of our faith. What we saw manifest itself in the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, is a threat to our democracy, but it is also a threat to orthodox Christian faith. The word “Christian” means “Christ-like.” As leaders in the Church, we do not agree on everything, but we can agree on this — Christians should live in a way that honors Jesus, and reminds the world of Him.

As Jesus himself said, “They will know that you are my disciples by the way you love” (John 13:36). No Christian can defend the unChristlike behavior of those who committed the violence on January 6. Not only was it anti-democratic, but it was also anti-Christian.

On January 6 we saw the flags claiming Trump’s name, calling for violence, and raising the name of Jesus. We saw images of a police officer being beaten with an American flag and another being crushed in a doorway. We know an officer was murdered in the act of insurrection. We witnessed the cross and the gallow being erected. We saw and heard the prayer the insurrectionists prayed from the Senate desk in Jesus’ name. Many of us recognized the content, the structure, and the style of that prayer as matching our own churches and faith.
But we reject this prayer being used to justify the violent act and attempted overthrow of the Government.

We have witnessed the rise of violent acts by radicalized extremists using the name of Christ for its validity in the past, including the deadly actions in Charlottesville in 2017. We join our voices to condemn it publicly and theologically.

We recognize that evangelicalism, and white evangelicalism in particular, has been susceptible to the heresy of Christian nationalism because of a long history of faith leaders accommodating white supremacy. We choose to speak out now because we do not want to be quiet accomplices in this on-going sin. But we also want to celebrate the long tradition of prophetic Christian witness in this nation that has challenged white supremacy and violent Christian nationalism. Though the KKK in the South claimed the symbol of a Christain cross, prophetic Black Christians formed and discipled children in Birmingham, Alabama who led a nonviolent witness in the face of dogs and firehoses. Though an appeal to “biblical values” has been used to demonize immigrants, undocumented Christians in America today have led a movement that insists upon the dignity and full humanity of all undocumented people. There is a powerful Christian witness for the common good in our past and in our present. White evangelicals in America can grow in faithfulness by following this cloud of witnesses, including the many white freedom-fighters who risked their lives standing up for love in the face of violence and hatred.

We urge all pastors, ministers, and priests to boldly make it clear that a commitment to Jesus Christ is incompatible with calls to violence, support of white Christian nationalism, conspiracy theories, and all religious and racial prejudice.

Just as it was tragically inconsistent for Christians in the 20th Century to support the Ku Klux Klan and Nazi ideology, it is unthinkable for Christians to support the Proud Boys, Oathkeepers, QAnon, 3 Percenters, America Firsters, and similar groups.

We urge faith leaders to engage pastorally with those who support or sympathize with these groups, and make it clear that our churches are not neutral about these matters: we are on the side of democracy, equality for all people, anti-racism, and the common good of all people.

Instead of seeing the United States as God’s chosen nation we thank God for the church around the world that calls people of all races, tongues and nations to the knowledge and love of God. Instead of seeing any particular political leader or party as divinely appointed, we believe in the prophetic and pastoral ministry of the church to all political leaders and parties. Instead of power through violence, we believe in and seek to imitate the powerful, servant love practiced by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Our faith will not allow us to remain silent at such a time as this. We are also aware that our world needs more than a statement right now… we need action.

Every one of the signers of this declaration is committed to taking concrete steps to put flesh on our words. We will combat bad theology with better theology. We will resist fear with love. We will tell the truth about our nation’s history.

We will seek to repair and heal the wounds of the past. We will seek racial justice on a personal, ecclesial, and systemic level.

We will support organizations led by people of color. We will listen to and amplify the voices of people of faith who have been marginalized by the colonizing force of white supremacy and Christian Nationalism.

We will do our best to be faithful to Jesus, and to those Christ called “the least of these.”

  29. Houthis Form Specialized Taskforce for Tracking Fighters who Fled Battlegrounds

“Houthi leader Abdul-Malik Badreddin al-Houthi has ordered the formation of field teams tasked with tracking and capturing militants fleeing battlefields in Yemen, especially those raging in Marib governorate, well-informed sources said.

In Marib, Houthi ranks continued to sustain grave losses, triggering panic among remaining fighters from the Iran-backed group. Armed militants fled fierce clashes in the governorate in droves.

Hundreds of Houthis abandoning their posts in battlegrounds west and north of Marib has created a sharp shortage crisis for coup forces. Combatants bolted from fighting in the Sirwah, Hilan, al-Mukhadrah, al-Kasarah, Reghwan and Mudghal districts.

Some of the deserters secretly returned to their hometowns and villages without notifying Houthi leaders.

Aziz al-Jaradi, a senior Houthi commander who heads the group’s preventative security unit, was tasked with forming specialized teams for chasing down and capturing the deserters and detaining Houthi supervisors who are refusing to join the fight in Marib.

Some Houthi officers have declined to recruit more soldiers for battles in the governorate, leaving the group’s ranks depleted.

Following their leadership’s directives, Houthi intelligence agents tracked down deserters and raided their homes. Initial reports suggest that hundreds were apprehended by the group across seven different Houthi-run governorates.

According to local sources, Houthi agents warned the families of fighters who fled the battleground that they will be treated as traitors and will be subjected to harsh punishment.

Over the weekend, the newly formed tracking teams arrested around 45 escapee fighters in Dhamar governorate, locals told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Racial discrimination and extreme sectarianism were among the prime factors driving recruits to abandon Houthi ranks, locals explained.

Around 190 fighters were arrested in Sanaa and over 69 were detained in Ibb governorate, they affirmed.

Those arrested are being given an ultimatum: either return to fighting on battlefronts or face torture and imprisonment.”

  31. Father murders daughter for ‘honour’ in Lahore

“In another brutal incident of ‘honour’ killing, a woman was murdered by her father in Lahore’s Shalimar area on Wednesday over suspicion of being in a relationship with a man.

The woman, Shahnaz Bibi, was a mother of six, and had recently started living in a separate house with her children following a divorce with her husband, Kashif.

According to initial information, the father, identified as Akram, suspected his daughter of being a relationship with a man named Zubair.

On seeing the two together, apparently inside Shahnaz’s house, the father opened fire, killing Shahnaz on the spot and injuring Zubair.

A case was registered against the father with the Shalimar police by the victim’s mother, Shamim Akhter.

The police had started legal proceedings after arresting the accused.

At least 83 women were killed in the name of honour in Lahore in 2020.

The police filed charges against the accused in 62 cases after arresting them, while 21 cases were being investigated.

About the reason for the prevalence of honour killing, scholar Dr. Anam Fatima said the issue was linked with the importance of reputation in societies.

Male empowerment has existed for ages as it is rooted deeply in most societies of the world, she said.

Men from traditional cultural backgrounds follow the principle of “male dominance,” viewing women in their traditional domestic roles.

There is growing concern among such men, originating from traditional cultural backgrounds, that in alien lands “their” women may get “tainted” by the surrounding dominant culture.

In order to avoid this, they may become exceedingly strict about religion, assume aggressive attitudes and at times resort to violence.

She said being dishonoured in an ‘honour culture’ is often considered a fate worse than death and the dishonour of one person can stain many others. This is what drives people in such cultures to engage in honour killings.

Men who are socially deprived and economically constrained may tend to develop “narcissistic enjoyment” by exercising power over women, the scholar added.”

  32. Turkey slams EU for not having enough concern over PKK

“Turkey’s presidential spokesperson on Feb. 23 condemned a statement by the European Union’s lead spokesperson for external affairs over the EU’s support for a Turkish opposition party.

“For once, you could perhaps be concerned about the PKK, a terrorist organization on the EU list, which brutally executed 13 people in Gara, Iraq. Or would that get you into trouble with the PKK lobby?,” Ibrahim Kal?n said on Twitter regarding Peter Stano’s statement.

“The European Union is gravely concerned about the continuing pressure against the HDP and several of its members, which has materialized lately through arrests, replacing elected mayors, what seem to be politically motivated judicial proceedings and the attempt of lifting parliamentary immunities of Members of the Grand National Assembly,” Stano’s statement said, referring to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP)….”

  33. More than 140 soldiers detained over suspected FETÖ links

“Turkish security forces detained more than 140 soldiers on Feb. 23 in operations centered in the western Izmir province over alleged links to the FETÖ, the group behind the 2016 defeated coup.

Operations were held across 47 provinces in the country, with the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Izmir issuing detention warrants for a total of 148 suspects, 103 of whom were on-duty.

A colonel, as well as lieutenants, majors, captains, sergeants and specialist sergeants were among those sought in the operations against the alleged presence of FETÖ in the Turkish Armed Forces, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The suspects are accused of communicating with FETÖ’s “covert imams” – senior FETÖ operatives – via pay phone.

Twelve of the suspects belonged to the land forces, while 47 were from air force, 18 from the navy, 38 from the gendarmerie, and 19 from the coast guard. Fourteen of the suspects were graduates of military schools that were disbanded after the coup attempt.

FETÖ and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gülen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which left 251 people killed and 2,734 injured.

Ankara also accuses FETÖ of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.”

  34. Cross-border anti-terror operations are Turkey’s legitimate right: Erdo?an

“Turkey’s counter-terror operations within and across its borders are the country’s legitimate right as well as “humanitarian missions,” President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an said on Feb. 24, emphasizing that Ankara would continue these military operations.

“Terrorist operations conducted in and outside Turkey’s borders is a legitimate right,” Erdo?an said while addressing his party members at the parliament.

Ankara will not ask for approval from foreign actors to fulfill the “mission of brotherhood and friendship” imposed on the government by Turkey’s “thousand-year existence in its geography,” he stressed.

“We will not stop until we secure all our borders deep enough,” the president said, referring to Turkey’s cross-border military operations.

He also said that all countries should back Turkey’s fight against terrorism…”

  35. Migrants found in a truck in Czechia, one infected with UK COVID-19 variant

“On Monday, police discovered eight illegal migrants in a truck in Pardubice in the northeast of Czechia. Although some of them claimed to still be children, police immediately ruled that out in all but one of them and took them to a detention facility. One of the foreigners had the UK COVID-19 variant.

The truck arrived in Pardubice on Monday. According to the police, none of the migrants tried to run away. The detainees also had to take a coronavirus test, according to

“One of the detained foreigners had a positive test result with suspicion of the so-called UK variant. Of course, all detainees must remain in quarantine,” police spokeswoman Eva Maturová said on Thursday.

Furthermore, four of the foreigners claimed that they were not yet 18 years old. Because they did not have any documents, an expert assessment of their age was made, which showed that only one of them was a teenager.

Migrants often lie about their age as it is harder to deport those under 18 and in many nations underage migrants receive more generous benefits.

Five of the foreigners have already ended up in the Czech detention facility, and the other ones will follow. The Social and Legal Protection of Children office took custody of the youngest migrant.

The spokeswoman also noted that since the beginning of the year, 38 illegal migrants, mostly from Afghanistan, had been detained in the Pardubice region. Almost all of them were registered as asylum seekers in Romania and all said that their destination country was Germany or France.”
