Reader’s Links for January 20, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Moderate conservativism may now exist only behind closed doors. I think the speed of the collectivists’ success has caught everyone off guard. By using a mere grain of truth (flimsy or not), and repeating it loud and long enough to an ear-tired population, the left learned how to make a beautiful pearl of power.

Capturing the main stream media really was the coup, in the end. The PT phenomenon was unexpected but overcome. After all, does an invading army not secure tv and radio stations first? Now begins the “normalization” phase of the revolution, at least in the mind of the occupier. A few people may have a problem with this, we know. Now, the machinery must get behind those closed doors.

  2. There are different card games out there hard to tell what ‘news’ is really parody.

The 23-year-old forensic psychology graduate, encouraged by her father, decided it was time to break with the centuries-old tradition of sexual inequality in playing card decks that rank men above women.

“If we have this hierarchy that the king is worth more than the queen then this subtle inequality influences people in their daily life because it’s just another way of saying ‘hey, you’re less important,” she said in an interview. “Even subtle inequalities like this do play a big role.”

After a lot of trial and error, she designed a genderless deck in which the images of a king, queen and jack were replaced with gold, silver and bronze.

    • “After a lot of trial and error… …king, queen and jack were replaced with gold, silver and bronze”

Obviously, no Ace in the deck.

  6. Madrid explosion: ‘Four dead’ as blast destroys building sending smoke above Spain capital (express, Jan 20, 2021)

“AT least four people have been killed in a gas explosion in downtown Madrid, while 10 are understood to have been injured.

Shocking video footage of the carnage shows debris blown across a street as thick smoke fills the skyline. The blast ripped through a multi-storey building adjoining a nursery in Calle de Toledo this afternoon. Spanish TV channel La Sexta said four people had died, citing government sources. The building belongs to the Catholic Church, local authorities said.

A Church official said one church volunteer was missing.

Emergency services have urged the public to avoid the Puerto de Toledo area in the centre of the city.

Madrid’s mayor, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, said children and staff in the nursery are not believed to be among the dead or injured.

He told ABC Madrid: “Firefighters are checking for structural damage.

“We have no records of casualties in the adjoining residence, except for some rubble.

“What is confirmed is that there have been at least two deaths from the explosion.”

Reports suggest the blast happened while two people were checking a boiler.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed a street littered with rubble while several floors of the building appear to have been badly damaged.

There have been unconfirmed reports that the explosion was caused by a gas leak.

A police spokesperson said: “There has been a big explosion in a building on Toledo street in Madrid.

“There are already agents working in the area.”

German MEP Manfred Weber expressed his condolences to the victims.

He said: “Shocking images coming from Madrid just now.

“Our thoughts are with the people affected by the explosion and the first responders at the scene.”

The blast was reported shortly before 3pm local time (2pm UK time).”

  7. ‘Institutional Racism’ to Blame for Vaccine Scepticism Among Ethnic Minorities, Claim UK Health Experts (breitbart, Jan 20, 2021)

“The British government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) has pointed to “structural and institutional racism and discrimination” for the reticence amongst some ethnic minorities to take the coronavirus vaccine.

Figures collected in November by the UK Household Longitudinal Study found that while the population at large is overwhelmingly in favour of taking the coronavirus vaccine, with 82 per cent expressing willingness, a surprising 72 per cent of the black population in the UK said that they were unlikely or very unlikely to take the jab.

The study, also found that Bangladeshi, Pakistani, and Eastern European people, alongside young people and women, are also less likely to take the coronavirus vaccine.

A report from SAGE, reported on by the Daily Mail, blamed supposed “institutional racism” for the unwillingness of the BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) communities in the UK to be vaccinated.

“Trust is particularly important for black communities that have low trust in healthcare organisations and research findings due to historical issues of unethical healthcare research,” the report said.

“Trust is also undermined by structural and institutional racism and discrimination. Minority ethnic groups have historically been underrepresented within health research, including vaccines trials, which can influence trust in a particular vaccine being perceived as appropriate and safe, and concerns that immunisation research is not ethnically heterogeneous,” SAGE surmised.

The chairman of the Royal College of GPs, Professor Martin Marshall, said: ‘We are concerned that recent reports show that people within BAME communities are not only more likely to be adversely affected by the virus but also less likely to accept the Covid vaccine when offered it.

“As such, where appropriate, we’re calling for public health communications to be tailored to patients in BAME communities, to reassure them about the efficacy and safety of the vaccine and ultimately encourage them to come forward for their vaccination when they are invited for it.”

The director of the NHS Race and Health Observatory, Dr Habib Naqvi, claimed that language and cultural barriers may be a factor in the disparity and that fake news spread about the vaccine within certain groups might play a role as well.

“We need to be clear to our communities that there is no meat or meat products in the vaccine. There is no pork, there is no alcohol and it has been endorsed by religious leaders and religious councils,” Dr Naqvi said.

“Organisations and officials are working with social Asian role models, community leaders, influencers, religious leaders, to help to debunk some of the myths that are out there,” he added.

In November, the left-wing mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, called for ethnic minorities to receive preferential access to the vaccine, claiming that BAME groups “disproportionately suffered during the main deaths we saw in March, April, May and June”.

“One of the things we have got to do is give Londoners the confidence it’s worth getting this vaccine, and also make sure that the most vulnerable – the most likely to catch the virus and, God forbid, die – get the vaccine first,” Khan said.”

  8. Just Three Per Cent of Jailed Jihadists Are Isolated to Stop Them Radicalising Other Inmates: Report (breitbart, Jan 20, 2021)

“Just three per cent of the fewer than 200 jihadists serving time for terror-related offences are being isolated from other prisoners to stop them radicalising inmates, a report claims.

The Sun also reports that only one of the three specialist jihadist units set up in British prisons, Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) Frankland in Durham, is open. Both centres at HMP Woodhill in Buckinghamshire and HMP Full Sutton in Yorkshire have been closed.

The Frankland jihadist unit is home to Michael Adebolajo, who with Michael Adebowale beheaded Fusilier Lee Rigby near Woolwich Barracks, London, in 2014. A 2017 report revealed that before the unit was complete, Adebolajo had already corrupted dozens of fellow inmates with radical Islamist ideology, some whom swore allegiance to Islamic State and pledged to commit acts of terror on their release.

Sources told the tabloid that the fact that radical terrorists mix with other criminal inmates poses “a real and serious threat”.

Last week, Khairi Saadallah received a whole life sentence for stabbing three men to death and injuring three others during a terror attack at a Reading park last summer.

The court heard that the 26-year-old Libyan, who already had a long criminal history in the UK, had befriended the “prominent radical preacher” and Muslim convert Omar Brooks — a member of Anjem Choudary‘s banned al-Muhajiroun — while serving time for a non-terror-related crime at HMP Bullingdon. The pair were seen attending Friday prayers and going to the gym together.

The sentencing judge also heard that Saadallah, a failed asylum seeker, had avoided being deported for seven years before committing the attack, because of the UK government’s commitment to not sending criminals back to unstable countries. Instead, the migrant was given temporary leave to remain until 2023.

In November, analysis from the Henry Jackson Society revealed that in the past 20 years, the government has failed to deport 45 terrorists after they were released from prison. Amongst them were those who pledged allegiance to Islamic State, al-Qaeda, and al-Shabaab.

That same month, it was revealed that over 100 convicted terrorists were due for early release from prison. One of those is Britain’s youngest convicted terrorist, known only as RXG, who at 14 was found guilty of plotting to behead an Australian policeman. Sentenced to ‘life’ in prison in 2015, after serving barely five years, the parole board authorised this month the release of the terrorist, who now at 20, can enjoy life-long anonymity.”

  9. French TV Editors Offered Extra Cash to Talk About Europe More (breitbart, Jan 20, 2021)

“Editors at France’s public broadcaster France Télévisions will be offered a financial bonus to talk more on-air about European subjects after being accused of offering a lack of European Union coverage.

Editors of France Télévisions have been given a set of objectives in recent months, including an increase in diversity and coverage of Europe, with the objectives tied to the performance-linked part of their paycheque.

According to a report from French newspaper Le Monde, the financial incentives to cover Europe come after a study by the Jean-Jaurès Foundation from December 2019 revealed the broadcaster spent just 2.7 per cent of its time talking about the European Union.

In 2019, when former German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen was made European Commission President, the news programme 20 Hours on the channel France 2 spent only a total of a few seconds mentioning Von der Leyen’s inauguration.

Clément Beaune, the Secretary of State for European Affairs, backed measures to increase broadcaster coverage of Europe, last year saying the country needed to “strengthen the mechanisms that lead our public channels to talk more about Europe”. He added: “Let us look for all possible means of coercion or pressure to achieve this.”

According to Le Monde, the issue is a focus for President Emmanuel Macron as he assumes the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first six months of 2022, the year of the next French presidential election.

The move to increase press coverage of the European Union comes after former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker stated in 2018 that press freedom should “have limits”, specifically referencing the British press.

The European Union also released its own guidelines for journalists in 2017 telling reporters not to talk to “extremists” about mass migration and not to mention the ethnicity of migrant criminals in their work, either.”

  10. Czechs to make mandatory minimum of local food in stores (abcnews, Jan 20, 2021)

“The lower house of the Czech Parliament approved on Wednesday a requirement that supermarkets carry a minimum share of local food, a move to be less dependent on imports.

The share of Czech food in stores that are bigger than 400 sq. meters (4305 sq. feet) should be at least 55% in 2022 and increase to at least 73% in 2028, according to the bill.

It was drafted by the opposition populist Freedom and Direct Democracy party that pushed it through the house with the help from the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Andrej Babis.

The controversial move still needs to be approved by the upper house, the Senate, which is controlled by the opposition, and then by the president. The lower house can override a possible Senate or presidential veto by a simple majority.

Those who voted in favor of the bill argued that the coronavirus pandemic showed that it is important for the country to be self-sufficient in food production.

They said the move will also boost local agriculture. It applies to about 120 food products such as pork, beef, milk, honey and various vegetables already produced in the Czech Republic.

Eight European Union countries had protested against the bill, saying it would discriminate against imported products, which is illegal under EU rules.”

  11. 6 suspected militants killed in Russia’s Chechnya (abcnews, Jan 20, 2021)

“Chechnya’s Kremlin-backed leader said Wednesday that his forces have killed six suspected militants, including a warlord accused of organizing a 2011 suicide attack at a Moscow airport.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the regional leader of Chechnya, said that troops under his command had tracked down the suspects in the village of Katar-Yurt and killed all of them on the spot. Kadyrov claimed that the raid marked the elimination of the last group of militants that remained in the region.

“All underground bands in Chechnya have now been eliminated,” Kadyrov said on his blog. He added that the security sweep had been planned long ago and followed two previous unsuccessful attempts to hunt down the militants.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin called to congratulate Kadyrov, who personally took part in the security sweep…”

  12. UN: 43 Europe-bound migrants drown in shipwreck off Libya (abcnews, Jan 20, 2021)

“A boat carrying migrants bound for Europe capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the coat of Libya, drowning at least 43 people, the U.N. migration agency said Wednesday.

The International Organization for Migration said the “tragic” shipwreck that took place a day earlier was the first maritime disaster in 2021 involving migrants seeking better lives in Europe.

In recent years, the EU has partnered with Libya’s coast guard and other local groups to stem such dangerous sea crossings. Rights groups, however, say those policies leave migrants at the mercy of armed groups or confined in squalid detention centers rife with abuses.

The IOM said coastal security forces in Libya’s western town of Zuwara rescued 10 migrants from the shipwreck Tuesday and brought them to shore. It said the dead were all men from West African nations, according to survivors.

The migration agency said the boat left the western city of Zawiya early Tuesday and capsized a few hours later after its engine stopped working amid rough seas…”

Wearing his signature red tie and business suit, Donald Trump waved to well-wishers for one last time as president before boarding Marine One Wednesday morning. From there it was on to Joint Base Andrews, where another crowd of supporters waited for a last glimpse of Trump as president before he ascended the steps of Air Force One, which spirited him and the first lady to south Florida.

Among his final acts in the Oval Office were the issuance of 143 pardons and commutation of the sentence of his former top adviser Steve Bannon.

In his closing remarks as president, Trump reviewed some of his many accomplishments in his four years in office. At length, told the crowd:

Yes, I know. Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr., hasn’t yet taken the oath of office, much less delivered his sure-to-be rousing speech on he plans to unify a broken and bitterly divided America. So how am I predicting that he will fail at Job 1?

According to Politico founding editor John F. Harris the answer will be not in his words but his deeds. One area where Harris sees hope for getting “all Americans” to “raise our sights and lower our voices” is in the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. Harris writes:

  15. Radical Mosque near Montpellier Under Investigation by French Interior Minister (breitbart, Jan 20, 2021)

“A radical mosque in the commune of Lunel near the city of Montpellier is the focus of an investigation by the French Interior Ministry, having already been placed under surveillance in December.

The el Baraka mosque was under scrutiny five years ago after 20 local jihadists left France to join Islamic State in Syria and is again under investigation by Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

According to a report by Metropolitain, Darmamin’s office launched a large-scale operation to “eradicate Islamist separatism” which has included the seizure of documents for a tax audit and a separate judicial procedure against the el Baraka mosque.

Part of the investigation revolves around the expansion of the place of worship, which was proposed initially in 2019 when the imam and the mosque’s managers requested a building permit to extend it.

El Baraka is one of 76 mosques the French government placed under surveillance since December. However, it was not one of the nine mosques that the government closed last Friday. Some were shuttered because they violated safety standards, and others had been built illegally.

The move comes after French President Emmanuel Macron promised to crack down on radical Islamist ideologies following the murder of French teacher Samuel Paty in October.

A Chechen teen refugee killed and beheaded Mr Paty in the street after the teacher had shown cartoons of the Islamic prophet Mohammed to his class during a lesson on free speech. At least one mosque helped amplify a social media campaign against Paty before his death.

Since the murder, Macron and his government have shut down several associations linked to radical Islamist ideologies including the NGO Barakacity.

Following the group’s closure, its founder and former head Idriss Sihamedi took to social media to request asylum from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“I would like to request political asylum for myself and my team since I am not safe in France on behalf of our NGO,” he said.”

    The progressive weapon of choice.

In 1940, a German refugee named Richard Krebs published a memoir called Out of the Night, which was a Book-of-the Month Club selection for that year. He published it under the pseudonym Jan Valtin in fear of reprisals from the Nazis and Communists his memoir exposed.

Krebs had been a longshoreman during the 1930s, a union leader, and a trusted member of the German Communist Party. He was so trusted by the Party that it sent him on an undercover mission to Hamburg to spy on the Nazis. To equip him for the task the Communist Party provided him with a forged Nazi Party card that identified him as a member.

After Krebs returned from his mission, he became critical of the Communists because of their active collaboration with the Nazis in destroying the Weimar Republic. He had the indiscretion to make this opposition public. The Communists retaliated by accusing Krebs of being a Nazi, and “proving” it by publishing on the frontpage of one of Germany’s largest papers Krebs’ membership card in the Nazi Party that the Communists had forged for him, forcing him to flee for his life.

In providing actual “evidence” – however deceptive – the German Communist Party had more respect for the intelligence of their target audiences than progressives in general and Democrats in particular do today, where “guilt by accusation” has become the standard for slandering and cancelling their political opponents, none more obviously than Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States and the recipient of more votes – over 74 million – than any previous president in American history.

The manufactured emergency is here. The power grab comes next.

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is an investigative journalist and writer focusing on the radical Left and Islamic terrorism.

During the election, Speaker Pelosi had railed against Republicans as “domestic enemies” and “enemies of the state.” Now, Pelosi can be seen addressing soldiers outside the U.S. Capitol.

Fascist theater is now as common an occupation for the D.C. elite as upscale cocktail bars.

Pelosi’s fascist state and its crackdown on enemies is here with a militarized occupation of D.C. by 25,000 troops whose politics had to be cleared by the political commissars at the FBI, a ban on protests, and political opponents being silenced, fired, and banned by corporate monopolies.

Scenes that Americans would have once associated with banana republics and fascist dictatorships are now playing out daily as media propaganda broadcasts warn of a grave threat that requires a military occupation of Washington D.C. and the total repression of the opposition.

The more they hate Trump, the more we like him.

The media lie. All the time. They lied about former President Barack Obama’s economy; they tried to make us believe the worst economy since the Great Depression was a great economy. Then they lied about President Donald Trump’s soaring economy. They tried to make us believe the best economy in 50 years, maybe the best economy ever for middle-class Americans, was a bad economy.

They lied about the Black Lives Matter riots. For months, we saw radical communists, Marxists and violent thugs riot, loot, burn, mug and murder while attacking police officers with bricks, pipes and Molotov cocktails. They burned entire downtown business districts to the ground, such as those in Minneapolis and Kenosha, Wisconsin. They burned police stations to the ground. They took over cities such as Portland and Seattle. They destroyed famous shopping districts such as Fifth Avenue in New York City and the Magnificent Mile in Chicago. They killed over 30 people. They caused over $2 billion in damage.

  19. They could have a video of Joe Biden raping the Pope and it wouldn’t make any difference because the media and the Justice Department and the FBI would choose to ignore that video completely and it would simply go away like the video of Biden extorting the Ukrainians. As we can now all see nothing matters if the media chooses to ignore it. That’s how dictatorships throughout time have survived regardless of the atrocities they commit. The bad guys, I’m afraid, have reached total knockdown and we are now in Nazi Germany and Castro’s Cuba and Mao’s China with no foreseeable way out of the jungle…

President Donald Trump didn’t campaign in 2016 on a promise to confront the global spread of communism, but his efforts over the past four years against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), its proxies, and other elements of the communist specter have become the centerpiece of his legacy.

Viewed through this lens, the “America First” slogan was a fitting one for a campaign against a communist adversary and a medley of the causes it has co-opted in a decades-long campaign to supplant the United States as the most powerful nation in the world.

The CCP has spent decades plundering American wealth through the theft of trade secrets, protectionist trade policies, and market distortion. The regime has used this wealth to fund a behemoth soft power campaign, undermining U.S. interests in every domain and gaining influence over multinational institutions.

Despite significant interference from within his own government, Trump confronted the menace head-on in China, around the world, and in the United States. When he campaigned for reelection in 2019, communism versus freedom was one of the key themes, but the economic disaster and global havoc caused by the CCP virus, forced other priorities to the forefront.

Nevertheless, and despite little fanfare, Trump’s efforts against communism continued.

  22. Trump Talks To Allies About Starting His Own Political Party
    Ryan Saavedra
    3-4 minutes

President Donald Trump has reportedly spoken to some of his associates in recent days about forming his own political party, although the idea is considered unlikely even if he is being serious.

“Trump discussed the matter with several aides and other people close to him last week, the people said,” The Wall Street Journal reported. “The president said he would want to call the new party the ‘Patriot Party,’ the people said.”

The report indicated that it was unknown how serious Trump was about the idea and noted that the investment of time and resources needed to make it a major player in American politics could be a deterrent to the president.

Top pro-Trump Republicans close to the Trump administration told The Daily Wire that they thought it was a “bad idea” and that it would split enough support away from the Republican Party that it would ensure Democrats stay in the majority for quite some time into the future. Online, Democrats and leftists in the media cheered the idea for that exact reason.

  23. Pelosi On Religious Americans: ‘Willing To Sell The Whole Democracy Down The River’ Over Abortion
    Tim Pearce
    4-5 minutes

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accused religious Americans who cast votes for President Donald Trump of selling out the United States over the issue of abortion.

Pelosi appeared on a special episode of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s podcast, “You and Me Both,” on Monday to discuss the Capitol riot and the incoming Biden administration. During the roughly 30-minute conversation, Clinton and Pelosi reflected on what brought Trump to the White House, casting blame on religious Americans and their opposition to abortion.

“Now, there’s one other element that I have been talking about for a long time that gives me great grief as a Catholic. I think that Donald Trump is president because of the issue of a woman’s right to choose,” Pelosi said. “When he signed that paper saying, “These are the judges that I will appoint,” that was the dog whistle to the Evangelicals, to the Catholics, and all the rest. A woman will not have the right to choose. And when you see the polls about impeachment now, 80 percent think what happened was wrong; 70-some percent said he’s responsible, but 40-some percent don’t think he should be impeached. Well, why? One issue: abortion.”

    4-5 minutes

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott (TX) on Monday night ripped into the so-called “loyalty” screening of tens of thousands of National Guards troops to secure the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.

Linking to a piece from The Washington Post concerning the excess screening of 25,000 National Guard troops, Abbott posted: “This is the most offensive thing I’ve ever heard. No one should ever question the loyalty or professionalism of the Texas National Guard.”

Notably, service members are already screened for ties to extremism or other potential flags. Thus, the latest screenings seem to be excessive and perhaps linked to suspicion directed at supporters of President Donald Trump after the Capitol riot. The Associated Press in a Monday report on the screening, for example, named supporters of the president as potential threats to a Biden inauguration.

President-elect Joe Biden is calling for the Justice Department to look into reinstating a controversial Obama-era practice that allowed prosecutors to make settlement agreements that resulted in defendants paying outside groups instead of victims or the government.

On the eve of his inauguration, Politico published an article that contains an anecdote that is actually quite disturbing.

For higher-profile remarks, [Biden would] obsessively rehearse portions until he committed them to memory. And at times through the various iterations of outlining remarks, Biden could grow downright ornery.

“I would never say this,” Biden once snapped at an aide, aghast over the prepared remarks he was reviewing, according to a person in the room during a speech prep session last year. “Where did you get this from?’”

The aide explained that Biden had just said it in a public speech a couple of weeks earlier.

Former President Donald Trump’s children Eric, Ivanka, and Donald Jr. were among those to share farewell messages.

“Without a doubt, the best is yet to come,” said Eric Trump in a statement before President Joe Biden was sworn into office at around noon on Wednesday.

“My hope for Americans is that we never tolerate the old norm” and “take what we have learned in the past four years and we continue to fight for the liberties and pride that allows us to be red, white, and blue,” he remarked.

Elaborating further, Eric Trump said that his family—because of the constant pressure campaign against Trump—”carried tremendous weight through unprecedented resistance and persecution.”

He added, “No president has sacrificed more. But he (and we) did it for the good and betterment of the nation.”

Twelve National Guardsmen, including two who had made “inappropriate” comments online or in text messages, have been removed from inauguration duty in Washington, D.C., military officials said.

National Guard Chief Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson in a press conference with Pentagon spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman on Tuesday confirmed that 12 National Guardsmen have been removed from duty “out of an abundance of caution” after being flagged during a vetting process of the more than 25,000 troops in the nation’s capital to provide protection for Wednesday’s inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.

Some British universities are now virtually Judenfrei: free of Jews. This is a chilling indictment not just of British academia but of a liberal democratic society that has tolerated, often through ignorance or complacency, a wave of discrimination against Jews that has swept through the universities over recent decades. “The goal is achieved! No more Jews at German universities,” the leading Nazi student newspaper, Die Bewegung, triumphantly proclaimed in 1938.

Gordon Chang, a China affairs expert and widely known for his book “The Coming Collapse of China,” said on Sunday that the Chinese regime’s challenge is existential and the United States should cut ties to it.

“Chinese leaders are both arrogant and insecure at the same time. And this, to me, is the worst possible combination of attributes. So what should we do?” Chang said in an online webinar held by the Florida Society for Middle East Studies. “In what to me looks like an emergency, we need to cut our ties to the Chinese regime.”

Chang explained that cutting ties is not just decoupling. To decouple, or end supply chain vulnerability, is now a majority view. But he thinks the U.S. government should bring its factories back from China, end technological cooperation partnerships, cut off cultural exchanges, get Chinese diplomats and journalists out of America, get China’s newspapers off newsstands, and get Chinese cable stations off of our airwaves, etc.
