Reader’s Links for November 3rd, 2020

This post was created in the early morning of October 19th 2020 for automatic posting now.. And here is hoping that we all made it safely to today. So much can happen between now and then. Let’s hope whatever happens in the following few days, assuming we are all ok now, that we all come out alive and well

and with our rights and freedoms intact.

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Jihadists Reportedly Claim Responsibility for Vienna Attack, in Retaliation for Anti-Daesh Operation (sputniknews, Nov 3, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/202011031080962105-jihadists-reportedly-claim-responsibility-for-vienna-attack-in-retaliation-for-anti-daesh-operation/

“Jihadists released a statement claiming responsibility for the terror attack in Vienna late Monday, according to SITE Intelligence Group – an American company that claims to monitor the information activity of extremists.

The Daesh* supporters, according to SITE, are “joyous” while describing perpetrators as “lions” and asserting that the Vienna attack is “part of the bill” Austria owes for its involvement in the US-led coalition fighting against the Daesh terrorist group…”

      Attentäter kaufte Waffe in Slowakei

    • DAILY MAIL – Vienna terrorist posed with weapons before killing four in gun rampage: Police probe social media images as it’s revealed killer was jailed for trying to join ISIS but freed early and deemed ‘incapable of attack’

Two women and two men were killed after shooting began outside a synagogue in central Vienna at 8pm

The gunman, armed with an automatic rifle, pistol and machete was ‘neutralised’ at 8.09pm, police chief said

Twenty-year-old killer Kujtim Fejzulai was jailed in April 2019 because he wanted to travel to Syria to join ISIS

He was granted early release in December under juvenile law. He was not deemed a threat, one report said

Shocking footage shows him wielding an assault rifle and sprinting through the streets firing shots at random

Seven of the terrorist’s 22 injured victims are in a critical, life-threatening condition in hospital

Manhunt had been carried out for much of the day but it has since emerged that Fejzulai was a ‘lone wolf’

Fourteen people linked to the attack were arrested as some 18 houses were raided across Austria on Tuesday

The Vienna terrorist posed with weapons before killing four in a ‘lone wolf’ gun rampage last night, officials have revealed.

Twenty-year-old Kujtim Fejzulai posted a photo on his Instagram account before the attack that showed him with two of the weapons he apparently used, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer announced.

Fejzulai began his attack at 8pm near a synagogue armed with an automatic rifle, pistol and machete.

The Islamist marauded through the streets wearing a fake explosives belt and injured 22 as he fired at random before he was ‘neutralised’ – shot dead by police at 8.09pm.

Fejzulai killed an elderly man and woman, a young male passer-by and a waitress.

A 28-year-old police officer was shot but is said to be in a stable condition, while seven civilians who were injured were said to be in a critical, life-threatening condition.

Austrian police have arrested 14 people in raids linked to the deadly attack and have found no evidence that a second shooter was involved, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said Tuesday.

‘There have been 18 raids in Vienna and Lower Austria and 14 people have been detained,’ Nehammer told a televised press conference.

The minister added that police believe that the attack in central Vienna was carried out by Fejzulai, who was killed by police on Monday night, on his own.

The video material evaluated by the police ‘does not at this time show any evidence of a second attacker,’ Nehammer said.

Fejzulai had been jailed in April 2019 for trying to join Islamic State but he was granted early release in December under juvenile law because he was 19-years-old at the time. He was not deemed capable of carrying out an attack, according to a report.

Fejzulai was born and raised in Vienna and was one of 90 Austrian Islamic radicals known to intelligence because they wanted to travel to Syria, one national newspaper editor tweeted this morning.

He had Albanian roots and his parents were originally from North Macedonia, Falter editor Florian Kenk wrote. Police thought he was not capable of planning an attack in Vienna, Klenk added.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer admitted the attacker had ‘fooled’ the judiciary’s de-radicalisation programme.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said this morning: ‘It is now confirmed that yesterday’s attack was clearly an Islamist terror attack. It was an attack out of hatred – hatred for our fundamental values, hatred for our way of life, hatred for our democracy in which all people have equal rights and dignity.’

His government on Tuesday ordered three days of official mourning, with flags on public buildings to be flown at half-mast until Thursday.

Angela Merkel called Islamist terror the ‘common enemy,’ saying that ‘the fight against these assassins and those who instigate them is our common struggle.’

Authorities were still trying to determine whether further attackers may be on the run for much of Tuesday and people were ordered to stay and home and children did not have to go to school. Some 1,000 police officers were on duty in the city this morning.

The rampage came on the final evening before Austria went into lockdown amid rising coronavirus rates, with bars and restaurants in the country closed from midnight and people flocking to enjoy one last night of freedom.

The first shots were heard at around 8pm in the heart of city close to the central synagogue and the world famous opera house.

Up to 100 shots from an automatic rifle were heard by one witness.

A total of six crime scenes have been set up all in the Innere Stadt – a small area making up the old town of Vienna.

One of those cordons is in place at a well-known restaurant on Ruprechtsplatz 1 where the waitress was shot dead.

Another victim was killed at the Fleischmarkt (meat market) and another at Franz Josefs Kai close to the river.

Further down Franz Josefs Kai, the killer fired and seriously injured a 28-year-old police officer.

Fejzulai was shot dead nine minutes after his assault started close to the restaurant on Ruprechtsplatz 1 where he had killed the waitress.

Video footage showed the suspect, dressed in white coveralls, firing off bursts apparently at random as he ran down the Austrian capital’s cobblestone streets.

Other clips showed the man gunning down a person outside what appeared to be a bar with a long-barrelled weapon. He moved down the street before returning to the crumpled body of his victim and then fired at him again, this time with a handgun.

Oskar Deutsch, the head of the Jewish community in Vienna, said the shooting took place in the street where the city’s main synagogue is located but that it wasn’t clear whether the house of worship had been targeted.

The synagogue was already closed at the time of the shooting, Deutsch tweeted. A neighbouring restaurant was also closed.

Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister said he saw at least one person fire shots at people sitting outside bars in the street below his window.

‘They were shooting at least 100 rounds just outside our building,’ Hofmeister said. ‘All these bars have tables outside. This evening is the last evening before the lockdown. As of midnight, all bars and restaurants will be closed in Austria for the next month and a lot of people probably wanted to use that evening to be able to go out.’

A Turkish national, Recep Tayyip Gultekin, told how he barely escaped death when he heroically carried an injured woman and then the stricken police officer to safety during the attack.

Gultekin was out with a friend when they heard gunshots, he told Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency.

‘After I carried the woman to a nearby restaurant, the terrorist pointed his gun at me,’ Gultekin said.

He hurled himself onto the ground to avoid being hit by the rifle but was wounded.

Despite having shot embedded in his foot, he and his friend managed to get to a nearby police station where they said they saw the policeman who was wounded.

Gultekin and his friend helped carry the 28-year-old officer to an ambulance.

The shooter had ‘shot wildly with an automatic weapon’ before police arrived to intervene, witnesses said.

‘It sounded like firecrackers, then we realised it was shots,’ said one witness quoted by the public broadcaster ORF.

Footage believed to be taken near the scene showed people ducking and weaving as they ran for cover, with shots ringing out.

Police sealed off much of the historic centre of the city overnight, urging the public to shelter in place.

Many were forced to shelter inside hotels and restaurants as police patrolled the streets and warned people to stay inside for fear there were multiple gunmen on the loose.

Around 20 ended up inside the Hotel Wandl where a receptionist ‘acted unselfishly and without fear,’ in letting people hide inside, Der Standard reported.

Norbert Suchanek, managing director of the hotel, told the paper his receptionist ensured that panic didn’t spread when it became clear police were not going to let anyone leave.

The manager said other hotels had turned people away and the receptionist was commended by many guests for his actions at breakfast on Tuesday.

At the nearby Am Stephansplatz hotel, three rooms were opened up last night for people who had been forced to flee the streets in fear of their lives.

One waiter described how police told them: ‘You all have to stay inside because there’s a probably a dead man there.’

‘At the beginning, I thought to myself that maybe we were making an American film or that they had drunk too much,’ said waiter Jimmy Eroglu, 42.

Robert Schneider, who lives in central Vienna, went out and found two lasers trained on his chest.

‘Hands up, take off your jacket,’ officers shouted at him, the 39-year-old told AFP. ‘We had seen nothing, heard nothing. We are in shock.’

Vienna police urged people to avoid all open spaces and public transport in the city. They also said trams and buses were not stopping and urged social media users not to post videos of the police operation, so as not to endanger officers.

Photos and videos from the scene show police officers searching restaurants, cars and people as part of the manhunt.

Czech police said they had started random checks on the country’s border with Austria following Monday’s attack.

‘Police are carrying out random checks of vehicles and passengers on border crossings with Austria as a preventive measure in relation to the terror attack in Vienna,’ the police tweeted.

Reacting to the attack, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: ‘I am deeply shocked by the terrible attacks in Vienna tonight. The UK’s thoughts are with the people of Austria – we stand united with you against terror.

Home Secretary Priti Patel tweeted: ‘Deeply shocked and saddened by the incident that has taken place in Vienna this evening. My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected and we stand ready to support in any way we can.’

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed Europe would not bow to terrorists following the shootings in Vienna on Monday in which at least two people including one attacker died and several more were injured.

‘We French share the shock and sorrow of the Austrian people following the attack in Vienna,’ Macron tweeted in both French and German.

‘After France, it is a friendly nation that has been attacked. This is our Europe. Our enemies must know who they’re dealing with. We will concede nothing.’

US President Donald Trump said in a tweet ‘our prayers are with the people of Vienna after yet another vile act of terrorism in Europe.’

‘These evil attacks against innocent people must stop. The U.S. stands with Austria, France, and all of Europe in the fight against terrorists, including radical Islamic terrorists.’

Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu wrote: ‘Israel condemns the brutal attack in Vienna and stands in total solidarity with Austria. Civilized peoples everywhere must unite to defeat the savagery of resurgent Islamist terrorism.’

    • DAILY MAIL – How jihadist duped officials into believing he was no danger: Vienna shooter said ‘attending the wrong mosque’ led him astray and insisted he renounced ISIS ideals during his terror trial

The Vienna gunman Kujtim Fejzulai, 20, was arrested in 2019 for joining ISIS
He was sentenced to 22 months in prison and granted early release in December
The terrorist said he joined because he wanted his ‘own apartment’ and income

The Vienna gunman Kujtim Fejzulai duped officials in a 2019 trial by saying he had been led astray by the ‘wrong mosque’ and had renounced his ISIS ideals.

Fejzulai, 20, was jailed in April 2019 because he wanted to travel to Syria to join ISIS but he was granted early release in December under juvenile law.

He was not deemed capable of carrying out an attack, according to a report.

At least one terrorist started shooting close to a synagogue in Vienna’s city centre as four were killed and 17 were injured at 8pm last night.

Armed with an automatic rifle, pistol and machete, Fejzulai was ‘neutralised’ at 8.09pm after marauding through the streets wearing a fake explosives belt.

Fejzulai made it all the way to an ISIS safe house on the Turkish border with Syria last year before he was stopped by local police.

It emerged in Fejzulai’s trial in April, 2019, during which he said that he had ‘got into the wrong mosque’ in 2016.

He said in the trial he did not feel disadvantaged growing up and began studying Islam in the middle of puberty.

Asked why he had tried to join IS, the Austrian-born terrorist told the judge: ‘I wanted to get away from home. I expected a better life.

‘My own apartment, my own income.’

But he had earned enough through his summer job in 2018 to buy plane tickets to Kabul where he had arranged to meet ISIS contacts.

It was only after buying the ticket that Fejzulai realised he needed a visa to travel to Afghanistan.

On September 1, 2019, Fejzulai arrived in Syria alone. He spent two days in a ‘rat hole,’ his lawyer told the court, with ‘no shower, no toilet, [and] no running water’.

He was captured by police after two days and detained in Turkey for four months before being extradited back to Austria where he went under trial.

His defence lawyer Rudolf Mayer told the court Fejzulai had denounced his IS ideals after his arrest.

He said: ‘How can I change the ideology of a suicide bomber? Not with high fines. You have to change your mind.

‘If [Fejzulai] had not attended a mosque but a Kung Fu school, [he] would have gone to Tibet and become Shaolin monks.’

Despite facing between one and ten years imprisonment for membership in a criminal organisation and a terrorist organisation, he was given a reduced sentence of 22 months was granted early release from prison in December.

Fejzulai was born and raised in Vienna and was one of 90 Austrian Islamic radicals known to intelligence because they wanted to travel to Syria, a national newspaper editor tweeted this morning.

He had Albanian roots and his parents were originally from North Macedonia, Falter editor Florian Kenk wrote.

Police thought he was not capable of planning an attack in Vienna, Klenk added.

Nehammer told APA that Fejzulai had posted a photo on his Instagram account before the attack that showed him with two of the weapons he apparently used.

‘(The suspect) was equipped with a fake explosive vest and and an automatic rifle, a handgun and a machete to carry out this repugnant attack on innocent citizens,’ Nehammer said.

In a Rosbalt interview titled “Turkey Openly Backs the Islamic Ummah of Europe”, Aleksey Kuchin interviewed Professor Alexander Tevdoy-Burmuli, an expert on ethnopolitical processes.

Tevdoy-Burmuli saw Turkish influence behind the recent acts of terror in France and claimed that a dangerous synergy is created “when the accumulated [Islamic] terrorist potential and the corresponding practice… receives institutional support from the Turkish authorities.”

Tevdoy-Burmuli believes that Russian Muslims are being drawn into this trend as could be seen at the anti-Macron demonstration in Moscow, where the demonstrators shouted “Allah Akhbar”. Tevdoy-Burmuli mildly criticized Russia’s law enforcement authorities for treating the Muslim demonstrators more leniently than at other unauthorized demonstrations.

      The interview with Tevdoy-Bumuli follows…

      [Questions + *Answers*]

      – Do you think the terrorist attacks in France can somehow be connected with the conflict between Erdogan and Macron?

      – To what extent were the last two incidents in France provoked by such support from Erdogan?

      – Meaning, in your opinion, those who say that Ankara is behind the European Muslim fundamentalists are right?

      – In this regard, let’s note the threats to the Russian TV presenter … who expressed solidarity with the French president…

      – Nevertheless, it seemed to me that Erdogan cannot be called an Islamist in the purest sense. Even [under his presidency], Turkey is at least partly a secular country …

“It is not about a dispute between Christians and Muslims or between Austrians and migrants. It is about a struggle between civilisation and barbarism,” Kurz added.

He also announced a nationwide minute of silence for the victims of the attack at 12 noon. Austria will be in state mourning for three days, the Chancellery said.

According to Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer, four people died and fourteen more were injured as a result of a terrorist attack in Vienna on Monday night.

“We continue to assume that there was at least one criminal. Search activities are ongoing so that we can rule out that there are other criminals,” the minister told the OE24.TV broadcaster.

“Children as young as eight are being investigated in France for supporting terrorism after several youths were reported to interrupt memorials to beheaded teacher Samuel Paty.

Two 12-year-olds are under investigation by French police on suspicion of supporting terrorism, over comments made during a homage to a teacher beheaded in a jihadist attack, officials said today.

Prosecutors in the eastern city of Strasbourg said the two school students made their comments during a nationwide minute of silence Monday for the teacher.

They added that two similar incidents were also reported involving children aged eight and nine, prompting a social welfare inquiry.

Prosecutors said the two youths apparently suggested during discussions in class that Paty deserved to die for showing the controversial cartoons that had been republished by the satirical weekly…”

  9. Danish Newspapers Agree to Publish Political Ads with Mohammed Cartoon (breitbart, Nov 3, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/11/03/danish-newspapers-agree-publish-political-ads-mohammed-cartoon/

“Two Danish newspapers have agreed to publish a political ad from the national-conservative party the New Right that will feature a depiction of the Islamic prophet Mohammed.

President and founder of New Right Pernille Vermund said she was pleased that the tabloid Berlingske and weekly newspaper Weekendavisen agreed to publish the political ads, saying: “I’m happy about that. Of course, I expected that most media would publish it and take advantage of the freedom of the press we have in Denmark.”

According to a report from Danish broadcaster Tv2, the New Right party announced it would be posting the ads with a cartoon of Mohammed on Friday, but were met with lukewarm response initially from the Danish press.

Several newspapers stated that they would either not publish the ad at all or that there needed a period of time to think about publication.

Martin Krasnik, editor-in-chief of Weekendavisen, was there first to publicly state his newspaper would print the ad and was followed by Berlingske editor-in-chief Tom Jensen, who said his newspaper would also run the ad.

According to Miss Vermund, the newspaper Jyllands Posten, which became famous for printing cartoons of Mohammed in 2005, has so far refused to print it.

The political ad will feature two cartoons of Mohammed published by Charlie Hebdo, both of which were used by murdered French teacher Samuel Paty to teach his class on the subject of free expression before he was beheaded in the street by a Chechen radical Islamic terrorist.

The New Right party is not the first to publish the Charlie Hebdo cartoons in the wake of the murder of Mr Paty. Just days after his murder, the city of Montpellier projected various cover of Charlie Hebdo on a city building, including those of Mohammed.

The publishing of the cartoons, along with French President Macron’s vow to crack down on Islamist groups and organisations, has earned anger from many parts of the Islamic world and calls for boycotts of French goods.”

    • Seth Frantzman Thread:

So according to politico any country that wants to be secular and critique religion somehow deserves to be targeted? Odd. So one is allowed to have countries with extreme enforced religious theocracy… not “extreme secularism”…secularists don’t carry our attacks the other way

There is no such thing as “blasphemy”…the second you use this term you accept its terms. Some places used to burn people at the stake and carry out witch trials. Claiming that this is acceptable because of “blasphemy” means one accepts it

What if one day some religion claims smiling is “blasphemy” will we all have to stop smiling or we will be told it “offended” people and they have a “right to terror”?

On the one hand we are told religion is “tolerant” and then on the other we are told “blasphemy” somehow is an excuse for attacks. If there can be countries that are theocracies then there must be countries that are allowed not to be.

The only reason there was an attack in France was because media in Ankara, Tehran, Malaysia, Pakistan and a few places, distracting from economic failure at home, sought to leverage this non-story and create a fake “blasphemy” propaganda. It’s not about secularism, but propaganda

I understand some people get offended by what they perceive to be “blasphemy”….secular society has its own norms and forms of “blasphemy” if one doesn’t accept aspects; but traveling to a country to carry our attacks is not really due to “blasphemy” but rather incitement

  10. Bahrain convicts 51 people in mass trial amid crackdown (abcnews, Nov 3, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/bahrain-convicts-51-people-mass-trial-amid-crackdown-73990369

“Bahrain announced Tuesday it convicted 51 people, more than half of them abroad, on charges of belonging to a militant group. It was the latest mass trial conducted in this island kingdom amid a yearslong crackdown on all dissent.

Bahrain described those convicted as belonging to an unnamed militant group that received orders from Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. It alleged that the Guard supplied weapons and funding to aid the group in plans to potentially target “economic and vital installations, security patrol sites, the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior and (the) Bahrain Defense Force.”

However, Bahrain said some of those arrested had targeted a bank ATM and a transportation company, while others allegedly possessed gasoline bombs and other items. The arrests took place last year, the statement said.

Of those convicted, the kingdom described 27 as “fugitives abroad.” The suspects received sentences ranging from five years to life in prison, the statement said. One defendant was acquitted.

The statement named none of those convicted. The Associated Press could not immediately identify the lawyers who defended them in court.

Bahrain, a tiny Sunni-ruled island off the coast of Saudi Arabia that is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, has seen demonstrations, unrest and militant attacks on police since its 2011 Arab Spring protests. Those demonstrations saw the island’s Shiite majority and others demand more political freedom before Bahrain, with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, put down the protests.

Authorities have blamed the unrest on Iran, which has long denied any involvement.

Bahrain has targeted journalists, activists, Shiite religious leaders and political parties as part of its crackdown on dissent. Some activists have escaped into exile while others have been imprisoned. Bahrain has carried out a series of mass trials during this time.”

  16. CANADA – ‘Another layer of protection’: Feds now recommend three-layer masks with filters

TORONTO — The Public Health Agency of Canada has updated its recommendations on non-medical face masks with the country’s top doctor now suggesting Canadians wear coverings that are made of three layers including a filter.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam said adding what is called a filter layer to masks will provide Canadians with extra protection against COVID-19.

“This is an additional recommendation, just to add another layer of protection,” Tam said.

As more research is conducted on the novel coronavirus, Tam said guidelines on how to best limit the spread of the virus has also evolved.

Tam said that masks with a filter will help trap small infectious particles and further protect against COVID-19. She said the degree of protection varies based on the construction, materials, and particularly the fit of non-medical masks.

“I keep emphasizing the fit is one of the most important things,” she said. “It fits around your mouth, on your nose, and it has to cover your mouth and nose. So that’s really important.”

Tam stressed that Canadians currently using two-layered masks do not need to throw them in the trash, but should instead purchase a disposable filter to insert between the layers.

“We’re not saying just throw out everything that you have. Nobody’s really [done a] study on non-medical masks in the past so there’s been actually more research into different materials,” Tam said.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, a non-medical mask should be made of at least three layers, two of which should be tightly woven material fabric, such as cotton or linen. The third, middle layer should be a filter-type fabric, such as non-woven polypropylene fabric.

Reusable masks with a non-woven filter layer already built in should be washed daily, and can be washed multiple times. Those with disposable filters should be changed daily or as directed by the manufacturer, according to the updated guidelines.

When buying new face masks in the future, Tam said Canadians should look for those made with these three layers.

“Adding another layer of protection, I think, is particularly important right now as we’re all moving inside,” Tam said.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Brian Conway told CTV News Channel that the updated recommendations will help deter Canadians from purchasing fashion-focused face masks that offer little protection.

“There are many fashion masks that are being made that don’t cover the nose and don’t cover the mouth, that don’t have a way of being fitted closely to the face,” Conway explained in an interview on Tuesday.

“This is more a reaction against that than against the very good two-layer mask we still have.”

Conway agreed with Tam that the extra layer of protection is critical as the weather turns colder and more Canadians spend their time indoors.

While there is limited studies on the effectiveness three-layered masks compared to those with two layers, Conway said face coverings with a filter will provide better protection against possible transmission through smaller, aerosol droplets.

“It’s really a call to action for all of us. If you buy a mask, if a three-layer mask is available, I think that’s probably preferable. But again, good two layer masks have served us so well over the past several months,” he said.

Despite the difference in layers, Conway said that Canadians do not have to disregard the masks they have been using until now. He stressed a two-layer mask is still effective if it fits as closely as possible against the face.

“Please wear them properly, please change them frequently and make sure that you have a mask on your person at all times,” Conway said.

The new recommendation on face masks comes on the heels of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warning that the window to control the second wave of the pandemic is “closing fast” as Canada’s cases continue to surge.

Trudeau again pleaded with Canadians on Tuesday to limit their contacts to what is “absolutely essential,” download the COVID-19 Alert app, wear a face mask and practice good hand hygiene to help control the rise in infections.

“We have to work together — right now — to beat the second wave. It won’t be easy, but I know we can do it,” Trudeau said.

  17. Iran: Newspaper Depicts Macron as Satan for Opposing Beheadings (breitbart, Nov 3, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/11/03/iran-newspaper-depicts-macron-satan-opposing-beheadings/

“Iranian state media celebrated Vatan-e Emrooz, an Iranian newspaper with ties to former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on Tuesday for publishing a cartoon of French President Emmanuel Macron titled “The Devil of Paris.”

The cartoon depicts Macron as Satan, with pointed ears, a red face, and an elongated nose. It is meant as revenge for Macron’s opposition to the beheading of Samuel Paty, a French schoolteacher, by a teen jihadist last month that occurred after Paty used cartoons of Muhammad in a class about free speech.

Macron has not responded to the cartoon’s publication at press time. He has repeatedly opposed criminalizing any cartoons in public and has not made any indication that his personal appearance in a cartoon would change his opinion.

PressTV noted that Macron’s stance of defending free expression despite potential offense to Muslims resulted in a wave of criticism in Iranian media, which the government tightly controls, even when it does not own the outlet.

“Other Iranian newspapers criticized Macron on the front page. Daily Kayhan demanded that the French ambassador be expelled from Iran in response to Macron’s insolence,” PressTV said.

State news outlets have vocally attacked Macron for his policies limiting the ability of violent jihadists to act in France, including the arrests of dozens of people in the aftermath of Paty’s beheading for publicly praising the killing. Mehr News Agency has published multiple attacks on Macron. In one article published this week, an alleged “human rights activist” called for Macron’s arrest and prosecution.

“Insulting divine religions is a hate crime and hate speech is not freedom of expression in any way. Everything in life has its rules and limits and especially when the repercussions are clearly causing a whole society to fall into divisions and destruction,” Firas Al Najim, the alleged human rights champion, told Mehr, quoting Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Macron should be arrested and prosecuted for hate crimes as he is more accountable than any citizen in France; president and leaders always have more responsibility and accountability than basic citizens.”

“Oh Macron, how much have your idiot reckless and undisciplined statements pushed in the direction of inciting hatred and discrimination in the world and within France?” an Islamic cleric, Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Ahmed Qassim of Bahrain, wrote in a letter to Macron that Mehr also published last week. “If you complain about terrorism, then your statements inflame and ignite the flame of terrorism. A little bit of terrorism is vicious, so why are you igniting it if you hate it?”

Qassim went on to argue that Macron, by refusing to prosecute cartoonists, has declared himself a greater prophet than Muhammad. He then questioned the concept of freedom of speech.

“Can Macron rationally or religiously prove or claim that the general human conscience is both in words and in deeds with freedom without any moral or legal restraints, and without any respect for the set of lofty values, human dignity, and public security?” the cleric asked. “Macron’s freedom opens the door wide to insults, to slander, to mockery, to unlawful crimes, to expose people’s concealed nature and to drop every sanctity.”

Paty was beheaded on October 16 after parents of Muslim students in his class, who Paty told in advance the cartoons would be displayed and allowed to not participate in the class if they were offended, launched a campaign to punish him. Police arrested an 18-year-old Muslim immigrant from Chechnya for the crime and shut down the mosque where the campaign against Paty began. Macron has also moved to empower police to shut down radical Islamist groups in the country and repeatedly vowed never to criminalize speech in the face of violence. He awarded Paty the Legion of Honor, France’s highest civilian award, posthumously.

“[T]here are groups [of] violent extremists who act in the name of Islam and by hijacking religion, who teach, within the framework of associations, using all the freedoms and rights that the [French] Republic offers, that our country offers, they teach that we must not respect France, that we must not respect our law, that we must somehow get out of our laws,” Macron told al-Jazeera in an interview published this weekend.

“They teach that women are not equal to men. They teach that little girls should not have the same rights as little boys. Not our values!” he declared. “I’m telling you very clearly: not our values!”

“We believe in the Enlightenment, and women have the same rights as men. It is vital. And so, I will never, never, never accept an association, even if it would be in the name of a religion, that would promote [the idea that] a little girl is not the equivalent of a little boy; she will not be given the same education, she will not be given the same opportunities — because it’s not our values,” he asserted. “People who think like that, let them do it somewhere else, but not on French soil.”

In addition to outrage in Iran, Bangladesh has experienced multiple waves of protests attracting tens of thousands of men burning Macron in effigy, threatening the French embassy in Dhaka, and calling for boycotts on French products. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, among others, have condemned any offense or possible offense to Muslims as outside of the realm of free speech. A video from Pakistan surfacing last week depicted a schoolteacher beheading an effigy of Macron in front of children.

“Macron is one of the few leaders who worship Satan,” Ataur Rahman, a senior leader of the Islami Andolan Bangladesh (Islamic Movement) party of Bangladesh, said at one of the several protests against Macron in Dhaka that have taken place.”

  18. Man arrested for planning attack on Pride Amsterdam
    https://nltimes.nl/2020/11/03/man-arrested-planning-attack-pride-amsterdam
The police arrested a man in August on suspicion of preparing to commit a terrorist attack in the Netherlands, NU.nl reported based on charges filed by the Public Prosecution Service (OM). One of suspect’s potential targets was Pride Amsterdam, the OM said.
According to the OM, 31-year-old Tashin E. searched online for information about chemicals that can be used to make explosives. He had one of those chemicals already in his possession. On Twitter he asked if anyone had an AK-47 for sale because he “needed it for the Gay Pride Parade”.
The Prosecutor believes that E. also wanted to target Jewish people and the police. On social media, he commented “Jew spotted” on a video game video showing someone getting shot. And on WhatsApp he said that police officers were skunks and needed a few bullets in their foreheads, and “that day will come”, the OM said.
On chat program Discord, the man spoke about the explosives he planned to make, also mentioning the chemicals he planned to use.
    E. will appear in court for a non-substantive hearing on Friday.
His lawyer told Dutch media that his client has an autistic disorder and had no concrete plans to carry out an attack.

  19. Two convicted in terrorist plot against Rotterdam police station
    https://nltimes.nl/2020/10/31/two-convicted-terrorist-plot-rotterdam-police-station
Two men suspected of plotting a terrorist attack against a police station in Rotterdam were convicted and sentenced to prison on Thursday. Ahmed B. was handed a prison term of eight years, and his alleged accomplice, Mouad M., was ordered to spend 7 years and 9 months behind bars.

Mouad M. was also convicted of vandalizing and damaging the prison in Vught where he was kept in pre-trial detention. Newswire ANP reported that he knocked down a treadmill in the gymnasium, and threw furniture while being egged on by Mohammed B., the man convicted of murdering filmmaker Theo van Gogh. This reportedly happened when M. was not allowed to contact his attorney. He was ordered to pay 33 thousand euros in restitution. The court also convicted B. of a violent street robbery where a gold chain was stolen, the sentencing document showed.

The two, originally from Morocco, were convicted on accusations that “they intended to use weapons and explosives to carry out attacks on arbitrary civilians and / or a police station,” the court said. “The suspects had traveled to the Netherlands especially for that purpose.”

Intelligence provided by the AIVD security service showed that at least one of the suspects also wanted to carry out an attack in France, and that in that country he had a source who could provide Kalashnikov rifles and bomb vests. The court said the evidence showed that their communications on Facebook indicated they wanted to “conquer Dutch security” with God’s permission, suggesting with a photo that a police station known as De Veranda was their target.

The defense in the case argued that this information was the result of an entrapment scheme by authorities. They argued that the “boasting” was meant to impress a person they were speaking with who was believed to be an ISIS supporter. The defense alleged this person was either an AIVD employee or a virtual persona operated by the AIVD and the FBI in the United States.

Preparations for the alleged attacks took place between April and mid-June, 2018, the prosecution argued, in the Netherlands, but also possibly in France and Germany. They were arrested on June 17 of that year in Rotterdam. “During their arrest and during a search of the house where they were staying in Rotterdam, (a total of) four mobile phones were seized and searched,” the court said.

Video shot on the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam were found on the phones. In the video, they said that nothing in their lives was more important than carrying out the attack and dying like a martyr, according to the court.

A search of the web browser histories on their phones turned up sites with jihadist videos, propaganda, and instruction manuals to create explosives. One phone had been used to visit 1,722 such web pages, the evidence showed.

“The administration of US Presidential candidate Joe Biden will reverse a number of President Donald Trump’s controversial policies on Palestine and the broader Middle East, according to Kamala Harris. The Democratic Party candidate for vice president made numerous pledges in an interview over the weekend with the Arab American News.

Responding to a question about US foreign policy in Palestine and the broader Middle East, Harris said: “Joe and I also believe in the worth and value of every Palestinian and every Israeli and we will work to ensure that Palestinians and Israelis enjoy equal measures of freedom, security, prosperity and democracy.”

Signalling a major shift from the Trump era, which saw the US depart from its traditional position to side with the ultra-right anti-Palestinian government of Benjamin Netanyahu, Harris added: “We are committed to a two-state solution, and we will oppose any unilateral steps that undermine that goal. We will also oppose annexation and settlement expansion.”

Harris also pledged to reverse Trump’s decision to defund organisations delivering critical relief and aid to the Palestinians. “Will take immediate steps to restore economic and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people, address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, reopen the U.S. consulate in East Jerusalem and work to reopen the PLO mission in Washington”…”
