Reader’s Links for October 15, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    video – 95 mins 2 secs
In this special episode the new encyclical “Fratelli Tutti” by Pope Francis is discussed. Is this encyclical setting the stage for what is to come? Is it getting rid of your individuality for the sake of the common good? Does it do away with private property for redistribution of wealth among the poor?

  4. Senate Judiciary Committee to Subpoena Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey Over Blocked Hunter Biden Posts
Committee to hold vote on issuing subpoena

The Senate Judiciary Committee will issue a subpoena to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey after the New York Post’s reports on Hunter Biden were blocked, saying that the act may constitute election interference with 19 days away from Nov. 3.

“This is election interference and we are 19 days out from an election,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) told reporters on Oct. 15, adding that the Judiciary Committee “will issue a subpoena to Jack Dorsey” to testify on Oct. 23. Cruz and Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said they will hold a vote on Oct. 20 on issuing a subpoena.

Cruz accused Dorsey and Twitter of “abusing their corporate power” to censor the Post’s reporting on purported Hunter Biden emails that detail lucrative deals involving China’s largest private energy company.

Both Cruz and Graham said they aren’t sure whether the Post’s reporting is true, but they stressed that it is about censorship. The Biden campaign has denied the allegations in the Post’s reports.

  5. China Demands French Museum Erase History of Mongols, Genghis Khan from Exhibit (breitbart, Oct 15, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/10/15/china-demands-french-museum-rewrites-history-removes-words-genghis-khan-mongol-exhibit/

“A French museum has postponed an exhibition on the 13th-century Mongol emperor Ghengis Khan, after accusing China of “censorship” and of trying to rewrite history.

The Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne history museum in Nantes was planning the exhibition in partnership with the Inner Mongolia Museum in Hohhot, China, when conflicts arose over certain historical facts that the Chinese Bureau of Cultural Heritage demanded be altered.

The Communist country’s culture department demanded complete control of all the texts and catalogue of the exhibition, including maps, legends, and brochures, which had to be sent to China for approval, according to Le Parisien.

Even after the contract was signed to agree to the loaning of the pieces to the museum, China demanded that words like “Genghis Khan”, “empire”, and “Mongol” be removed from the title, insisting it instead be called: “Chinese Steppe Culture of the World.”

China did not just want the removal of words, but a complete rewrite of history, with Nantes museum noting the new text sent from the communist state contained “elements of biased rewriting of Mongol culture in favour of a new national narrative”…”

    • For a visit by the Twisted-Ragheads, the French covered nude statues and refrained from serving wine. Ditto, the Italians.

ChiComs figure they’re entitled to make demands on the craven cultural elite that used to be so finicky about French-ness.

  6. UK Spy Chief Confirms ‘Tens of Thousands’ of Islamists are Biggest Terror Threat – But MSM Hypes ‘Far Right’ (breitbart, Oct 15, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/10/15/uk-spy-chief-confirms-tens-thousands-islamists-biggest-terror-threat-but-msm-hypes-far-right/

“New MI5 director-general Ken McCallum has confirmed that Islamist jihadists remain by far the biggest terror threat in Britain — but the mainstream media has chosen to hype his remarks on the comparatively minor threat from the far-right instead.

“Islamist extremist terrorism… by volume remains our largest threat,” the Glasgow born spy boss confirmed in his first public address since taking over Britain’s domestic intelligence agency.

“It is still the case that tens of thousands of individuals are committed to this ideology – and we must continually scan for the smaller numbers within that large group who at any given moment might be mobilising towards attacks,” he said.

“Having someone ‘on our radar’ is not the same as having them under detailed real-time scrutiny. Difficult judgements of prioritisation and risk must be made,” McCallum added — a warning which will come as little surprise to Britons familiar with learning than a given terrorist was “previously known” to the authorities, or in some cases even a convicted extremist out from prison on licence.

Despite McCallum clear admission that Islamist terrorism remains by far the number one threat to Britain, mainstream media outlets such as the BBC and CNN chose to emphasise and often lead on his comments about the “sadly rising” — but comparatively minor — threat of “right-wing extremism” instead.

“This threat is not, today, on the same scale as Islamist extremist terrorism,” McCallum had acknowledged, although he did say it was “growing” and that “of the 27 late-stage terrorist attack plots in Great Britain disrupted by MI5 and CT Policing since 2017, 8 have been right-wing extremist.”

This was all the encouragement some news outlets needed to sideline the far more pressing and, in terms of actual attacks, far more deadly Islamist threat, with the BBC not even mentioning it in the opening paragraph of its report:

Britain is facing a “nasty mix” of national security threats, from hostile state activity by Russia and China to fast-growing right-wing terrorism, the new director-general of MI5 has said.

The publicly-funded broadcaster did acknowledge in the second paragraph of its story that “Northern Irish and Islamist extremism [are] also a concern” — but it is not until paragraph twenty that it concedes that it admits that “jihadist plots form the bulk of UK investigations”.

This is more remarkable for the fact that the Muslim population which serves as the most likely recruitment pool for jihadism is comparatively small at less than four million people.

The anti-Trump CNN network in America, similarly, led with the headline ‘30% of UK terror plots disrupted by MI5 were far right, says security chief’ — an interesting reframing of the fact that 70 per cent were not — and another opening paragraph making no mention of Islamist terrorism:

The new head of MI5, the UK’s domestic security service, has warned that nearly 30% of the major terror plots it has disrupted at a late stage since 2017 have been from far-right extremists.

Similar tactics were employed by other left-liberal outlets, such as the Independent:

The Guardian, perhaps surprisingly, appeared to go a different route, in its coverage of McCallum’s address, not leading on Islamist terrorism or the far right and instead emphasising “Russian and Chinese threats”.

Not mentioned by the newspaper on that score were McCallum’s comments on what Reuters called “Episodes of hack and leak” with respect to the 2016 vote on Britain’s membership of the EU, i.e. “we did not see any during the Brexit referendum.”

McCallum also confirmed, unhelpfully for anti-Brexit conspiracy theorists, that “In the case of the EU referendum, MI5 was indeed investigating at the time and with others has since investigated possible leads to individuals who potentially may have been seeking to interfere in the referendum. We did those investigations and nothing of great significance has emerged from them.”

The major news outlets did not make any mention of the threat from far-left extremists, such as Antifa and the more radical elements of the Black Lives Matter movement — but nor did McCallum.”

  7. In Dearborn, Michigan, Muslim Americans are mobilising to defeat Trump
    https://www.france24.com/en/americas/20201015-in-dearborn-michigan-muslim-americans-are-mobilising-to-defeat-trump

“In Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit where one-third of residents identify as Arab-American or are of Arab descent, Muslim voters lean decidedly towards the Democrats. And while Joe Biden wasn’t the first choice for many here, widespread opposition to President Donald Trump is bringing voters into his camp.

The last time Nada Al-Hanooti came to the Starbucks in the bustling downtown of Dearborn, Michigan, it was to meet another reporter. The activist, who serves as executive director for Michigan of the Muslim political action group Emgage, has spent most of her days working from home since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. And it’s been keeping her on her toes.

Al-Hanooti’s chief goal now is to mobilise Michigan voters for the presidential election.

“2020 is literally the most important election year for all of us as Americans, and all people of colour,” she told FRANCE 24.

Dearborn, which borders the city of Detroit, is known as the birthplace of industrialist Henry Ford, and to this day it hosts the automaker’s global headquarters. The city also has the largest US Muslim population in the United States per capita. Restaurants and businesses display signs in English and Arabic; on Ford Road, opposite Henry Ford College and the University of Michigan, sits the largest US mosque, the Islamic Center of America.

Along with Detroit, Dearborn is part of Michigan’s heavily gerrymandered Wayne County and, specifically, sits on the edge of the district that in 2018 sent Democrat Rashida Tlaib to Congress. Tlaib is one of the four members of the congressional group dubbed the “Squad” that is seen as pushing Democrats to the left and which stokes outrage among Republicans.

Dearborn was also one of the few bright spots for Bernie Sanders this year in a state that otherwise tipped decisively towards Joe Biden, after going to the democratic socialist in 2016. Sanders won the March Democratic primary in Dearborn with 62 percent of the vote, nearly double Biden’s tally.

“Dearborn loves Bernie. It’s ironic that a bunch of Muslims adore a Jewish man, breaking all Western stereotypes,” said Al-Hanooti, who is of Palestinian origin. “My Palestinian community (adores him), because he was the first person that validated the right to exist for Palestinians, which is so simple, but no politician has ever been brave enough to say so.”

A drop in enthusiasm after Sanders bowed out

Today, Al-Hanooti and her team are doing their best to convince fellow Muslims to show up for Biden, whom many see as “another establishment white man”. She said it’s been a struggle.

“We knew that there was going to be a lot of work to do,” she said. “Minority communities … feel so much distrust with the Democratic establishment, as they should, because the Democratic establishment has not served us, and a lot of times it has been racist towards our communities.”

With her favorite candidate out, Al-Hanooti adjusted her pitch to voters who are on the fence: “The real work comes when he’s elected, and that’s when we’re going to lobby and make sure we hold him accountable.” Whatever her reservations, she said, “the opposition is way, way worse”.

“Biden’s not so hot on Palestine, but Trump literally made Jerusalem the capital of Israel,” she said. “No establishment Dem would ever do that.”

On July 20, Biden addressed US Muslims in a virtual summit organised by Emgage, and Al-Hanooti was pleasantly surprised by what she heard.

“He said, ‘I’m going to repeal the Muslim ban on day one,’ and … he actually quoted the Prophet!” she said. “I think Bernie actually pushed Biden to do better.”

    No room for error

Like so many Americans, Dearborn residents were hit hard by Covid-19, and the local economy is still recovering.

“A lot of people lost their jobs, including my own mother,” who worked in a mosque, Al-Hanooti said.

The pandemic has also complicated her work, ruling out door-to-door canvassing, which Al-Hanooti calls “the best way to get to people”. Instead, Emgage has been focusing on phone and social media outreach. Altogether this year, she said her team has sent out 1.3 million text messages and made 240,000 calls, including tens of thousands in the last month alone.

Al-Hanooti, who is 29, is leading a team of 19 people this election season, most of them younger. The outcome of this election, she said, is in the hands of her 16- to 25-year-old organisers – and “they’re killing it”.

As of October 14, polling compiled by Real Clear Politics puts Biden roughly 7 points ahead of Trump in Michigan. But Democrats know that’s no sure bet. Hillary Clinton was also leading the state in mid-October 2016, and ended up losing it by fewer than 11,000 votes. For Al-Hanooti, the key to not repeating the past can be summed up in one word: turnout.

“In Michigan right now, we have 270,000 registered Muslims. In Wayne County alone we have 125,000 registered Muslims,” she said. “With Michigan being a battleground state, the Muslim community has a huge opportunity to swing this election.”

Muslim turnout increased 19 points in 2018 relative to two years before, and Al-Hanooti is counting on that trend continuing. She cites election reforms passed in 2018 that made it easier to vote early and absentee in the state.

“If you give minority groups easy access to voting, they will go vote,” she said. She also expects Biden to do significantly better than Clinton among local Muslims, many of whom were wary of the Democrats’ 2016 candidate, in part because of her positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

    ‘There is no doubt anymore’

Imam Hassan Qazwini is on the same page. The imam, who immigrated to the US from Iraq in 1992, is the founder of the Islamic Institute of America in Dearborn Heights. While he can’t encourage his congregants to vote one way or the other, he is urging them to show up to the polls in large numbers. Personally, he supported Sanders in the primaries, but he has since rallied behind Biden.

“Hillary was not liked by Americans to begin with, including the Muslim community,” he said. “She did not project the image of a sincere candidate … With Biden, it’s a little bit different.”

Qazwini said Trump’s record has been bad enough that Muslims are “probably more motivated to go vote this time than any other previous election”.

“Knowing the stakes, knowing the impact that their vote can make, I think most Muslims are fully aware of the consequences of not voting,” he said.

For Qazwini, that means that even if Biden isn’t a “perfect choice”, he’s likely to win among Arab-Americans.

“Those who had a little doubt four years ago – who said, ‘Give him a chance’ – now they have no doubt that the man is a disaster, and if he continues to be president for another four years, God knows where he will be taking us to,” he said.

Among the imam’s acquaintances, a small sliver voted for the Republican in 2016. Qazwini is confident it won’t happen again.

“There is no doubt anymore,” the imam reiterated, after Trump “marginalised Muslims” and “supported white supremacy” as leader of “the most powerful country on earth”.

“He cost our economy a big deal, he cost our health,” Qazwini said, citing the more than 200,000 coronavirus deaths in the US. That was before Trump himself tested positive for the virus in early October.

Qazwini, who is Shiite, closely follows Washington’s policies towards Iran.

“The Iranian people – 85 million people – are suffering because of the unjustifiable sanctions the US is imposing on them,” he said. Trump “doesn’t care about human rights. He supports dictatorial regimes in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Middle East.”

Qazwini is eager for his adopted country to turn the page.

“I am not proud to be American under the presidency of a man like Donald Trump.””

  8. 20 security personnel martyred in Ormara, North Waziristan attacks
    https://tribune.com.pk/story/2268503/20-security-personnel-martyred-in-ormara-north-waziristan-attacks

“At least 20 security personnel were martyred in two separate terrorist attacks in Balochistan’s Gwadar and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan districts on Thursday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), at least six troops of Pakistan Army, including one officer, was martyred when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near a convoy of security forces in North Waziristan’s Razmak area.

Those embraced martyrdom included 24-year-old Captain Umar Farooq, 37-year-old Naib Subedar Riaz Ahmed, 44-year-old Naib Subedar Shakeel Azad, 36-year-old Havaldar Younas Khan, 37-year-old Naik Muhammad Nadeem and 30-year-old Lance Naik Asmat Ullah.

In the second incident, 14 security personnel also embraced martyrdom when terrorists opened fire on convoy of Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) at Makran Coastal Highway in Ormara.

“On 15 Oct 20, an encounter took place between security forces and large number of terrorists on Coastal Highway (Near Ormara), when a convoy of OGDCL was being escorted from Gwadar to Karachi. Security Forces responded effectively, ensured security of the OGDCL persons and managed their safe exit from the area,” an ISPR statement said.

The military’s media wing said that during the clash, substantial losses were also incurred to the terrorists…”
