Reader’s Links for September 13, 2020

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

March falls on same day police given authority to fine anyone not wearing a mask

Several thousand people gathered Saturday in downtown Montreal to hear speeches from conspiracy theorists and anti-vaccine activists, in one of the largest demonstrations to date against the Quebec government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The march began outside Premier François Legault’s Montreal office, and at one point stretched more than six city blocks. It attracted people of all ages, and from a wide-variety of mindsets.

Hare Krishnas marched alongside Christian fundamentalists and supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump. Others held signs about the 5G internet network, or perceived corruption at the United Nations.

“I decided to come today to say ‘enough,'” said Montrealer Andrée David, 75. “We’ve been manipulated enough.”

The most popular symbols at the protest — be it on t-shirts, placards or flags — belonged to QAnon, a far-right conspiracy theory started in the United States that claims a satanic, pedophile cabal secretly controls the U.S. government, if not the entire world.

QAnon was labelled as a national security risk by the FBI in 2019 after individuals began committing acts of violence based on the mistaken belief the theory is true.

The march on Saturday culminated in a densely packed rally outside the Radio-Canada building. Speakers accused the government of over-reacting to the threat of COVID-19 and lying about the danger of the disease, which has killed nearly 5,800 in Quebec. Behind the stage, two men waved large QAnon flags.

“I accuse public health [officials] of manipulating the numbers since the beginning of the pandemic to justify bringing our economy to a halt,” Jean-Jacques Crèvecœur, an anti-vaccine activist well-known in Europe, told the crowd.

Other speakers included Stéphane Blais, who believes the pandemic is part of an “international coup” and Lucie Laurier, an actress best known for her minor roles in the Bon Cop/Bad Cop films. She has become the most recognizable spokesperson of Quebec’s anti-mask movement.

Geneviève Guilbault, Quebec’s deputy premier, urged the demonstrators to follow as many public-health guidelines as possible despite their opposition to them.

“When outside, we ask people to stay two metres apart, and when that isn’t possible, to wear a mask,” Guilbault told Radio-Canada Saturday afternoon.

“I understand it’s an anti-mask demonstration, but the rules are for everyone, so we ask people to obey them.”

      Little respect for health guidelines

But many in the protest openly flouted the distancing guidelines. One man, wearing a leopard-print costume, offered “free hugs” to other participants.

A 26-year-old man who travelled from the remote northern Quebec region of Abitibi-Témiscamingue said he refuses to wear the mask indoors because he is convinced a court will overturn any fine he receives.

“All humanity is in danger if we blindly obey these excessive rules,” said another woman.

Few who took part in the march were willing to be interviewed on the record, and those who did expressed open disdain for mainstream media outlets.

Marie-Josée Bernard, a Montrealer and mother of three, said she preferred getting her news from a website run by a well-known QAnon advocate in Quebec.

She said she followed government guidelines closely in the spring, but has since stopped listening to news conferences and does her own research about the disease instead.

“The threat is over,” Bernard said. “Now I’m worried about my liberties.”

Don’t blame your friends for eating out during the pandemic, blame the miserable system that drove the restaurant reopenings

    https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-dining-shaming-friends-directed-capitalism-economy-2020-8

The American obsession with stabilizing the economy instead of safeguarding human life is at fault as well. On Twitter, stand up comedian Kate Willet summed up the issue perfectly: “We are in this mess because capitalism is prioritized over human life on every level.”

    • Tama, this is pure socialist blather. It is propagandistic and utterly wrong-headed. Blaming capitalism for our woes is like blaming your wet clothes on the rain. Capitalism is the natural provider of wealth through human activity. It is the ONLY source of wealth creation, hence survival. Without it there wouldn’t even be a stupid socialism to keep collectivists like you satisfied, because socialist governments must borrow from free-markets to be sustained (Soviets).

The primary distinction that must not be overlooked when viewing capitalism is that crony capitalism is bad. Large politically-connected corporations are another fascist incarnation altogether, and must not be lumped in with family-run enterprises that are the backbone of western civ.

    • Thank you Tama, for this interesting dicotomy: Capitalism vs Socialism. Greed vs each according to their needs.

“They have to either keep themselves and their families afloat by going back to work and potentially expose themselves to COVID-19, or remain healthy but face financial ruin. It’s a moral failing of society that we’ve left them no other options.”

“Recently, Congress failed to extend the extra $600 per week federal unemployment benefit it had been paying out to unemployed Americans.”

“Acknowledging that our economic system is corrupt doesn’t absolve you from personal responsibility, though. If you do decide to skip dinner and drinks, blame capitalism as much as careless friends for spiking COVID-19 cases.”

From this article, there was no reference to Russia, China, North Korea, or any other Marxist country in dealing with the virus, and so we are left trying to imagine the rich bounty of Communism after destroying the Patriarchy, as much as Fundamental muslims are freely capapable to imagine the gender of their 72 virgins in heaven when they kill for their struggle of jihad.

Totalitarian ideologies are based on the dual-received ‘fear-of-harm and die-in-the-glorious-fight,’ of the brain, demanding they have the solution for today’s Mixed Economies in the Free World.

  3. Interest rates are the cost of money, and the reward for the risk associated with lending money. The greater the risk, the higher the rate of interest. This rate is supposed to be set by the open market. However, when a central bank dictates rates it meddles in a complex system. If the Fed decides to suppress long-term interest rates look out. In 1977(?) Paul Volker raised rates to combat inflation to 20% and it worked. Inflation was brought under control. If long-term bond rates are suppressed watch out for serious inflation. Precious metals will skyrocket as a result:

  4. Iran Warns Bahrain Could Face ‘Harsh Revenge’ Over Decision to Normalize Ties With Israel (sputniknews, Sep 13, 2020)

“Israel and Bahrain have agreed to establish diplomatic ties, less than a month after the United Arab Emirates did so under a peace deal brokered by the United States earlier in August. The move drew condemnation from Iran and the Palestinians.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that Bahrain could face “harsh revenge” from its own people along with the Palestinians, after the kingdom decided to normalize relations with Israel.

“The executioner ruler of Bahrain should await the harsh revenge of the Mujahideen (Islamic fighters) aiming to liberate Quds (Jerusalem) and the proud Muslim nation of this country”, the IRGC said in a statement, cited by Reuters.
The statement called the decision to establish peace with Israel “a great folly and lacks any legitimacy and will receive appropriate responses”, echoing a condemnation previously voiced by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, that labeled the deal as “a shameful act that sacrifices the cause of Palestine”.

The move was also rejected by the Palestinian Authority, which denounced Bahrain’s decision as a betrayal of the Palestinians.

Other countries, such as Egypt, the UAE and the EU, welcomed the move by Bahrain to recognize Israel, praising it as a contribution to establishing stability in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump touted the normalization between the two countries as a “historic breakthrough”.

Bahrain will normalize relations with Israel shortly after a similar move by Abu Dhabi, which has agreed to establish ties with Tel Aviv under a peace accord brokered by the United States earlier in August to be signed on 15 September.”

  6. New Migrant Camp Being Set Up on Lesbos, Greece After Major Fire – Video (sputniknews, Sep 13, 2020)

“The Moria migrant camp, the largest such facility in Europe, was destroyed by a major blaze on Wednesday, leaving nearly 13,000 migrants without shelter. At the moment, there is no official statement on the cause of the fire, but Greek media reported it could have been the result of arson.

A new refugee camp is being built near Kara Tepe on the Greek island of Lesbos after the last one was engulfed in flames earlier this week, forcing the evacuation of the migrants living there.

Last week, the Moria camp was placed under quarantine after an asylum seeker was diagnosed with COVID-19, which led to mass protests on Lesbos.”

  7. Boris Johnson set to opt out of human rights laws (msn, Sep 12, 2020)
    https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/boris-johnson-set-to-opt-out-of-human-rights-laws/ar-BB18Yglg

“Britain is preparing to opt out of major parts of European human rights laws, risking an explosive new row with the EU.

Boris Johnson’s aides and ministers are drawing up proposals to severely curb the use of human rights laws in areas in which judges have “overreached”.

The plans under discussion include opt-outs from the Human Rights Act, which could prevent many migrants and asylum seekers from using the legislation to avoid deportation and protect British soldiers against claims relating to overseas operations. The Act allows British courts to apply the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

The move sets up a major new confrontation with the EU, which has been demanding that the UK commits to remaining signed up to the ECHR and keep the Human Rights Act in place as the price of future “law enforcement co-operation” between the bloc and Britain.

As Boris Johnson faced a major revolt over his decision to alter the EU divorce deal over its provisions on Northern Ireland (see video below), Sir Keir Starmer accused the Prime Minister of “reigniting old rows” over Brexit instead of focusing on the response to coronavirus.

Writing in The Telegraph, the Labour leader said: “We should be getting on with defeating this virus, not banging on about Europe. Get on with Brexit and defeat the virus. That should be the Government’s mantra.”

That suggests Sir Keir intends to court many of the voters won over by Mr Johnson’s “Global Britain” agenda in a sign of his determination to part from Jeremy Corbyn’s approach, and the Labour leader claimed the Prime Minister’s approach to the Withdrawal Agreement “risks holding Global Britain back”.

Work examining potential opt-outs from the Human Rights Act is being carried out in several Whitehall departments, including Number 10, the Ministry of Justice, the Home Office and the Ministry of Defence.

Dominic Cummings, the Prime Minister’s most senior adviser, has previously attacked the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg for judgments, based on the ECHR, blocking the deportation of “dangerous” foreign criminals. Mr Cummings has warned that voters would expect the jurisdiction of European judges to end in the UK as part of the Brexit process.

The ECHR, and its European Court of Human Rights, are part of a completely different legal system to the EU. They are both part of the Council of Europe, which has 47 member states including Russia and the UK.

The disclosure comes after The Telegraph revealed in February that Mr Johnson was refusing EU demands to guarantee that the UK would continue to be bound by the ECHR after the end of the transition period in December.

EU negotiators have been attempting to make future collaboration on law enforcement conditional on the UK retaining the existing Human Rights Act – a demand that British negotiators are understood to be continuing to resist in the talks.

The Conservatives’ 2019 election manifesto promised a review of the legislation, saying: “We will update the Human Rights Act and administrative law to ensure that there is a proper balance between the rights of individuals, our vital national security and effective government.”

The Government is expected to announce details of a formal review in the coming weeks. However, work is already under way to examine ways to curb the use of the legislation in asylum cases to avoid deportation as well as its use in legal claims against British soldiers.

One option is to amend the Human Rights Act or disapply its provisions from new laws, such as the Overseas Operations Bill, which is due to be brought back to the Commons next week. Other options include less radical changes designed to affect how judges interpret the law rather than changing the substance of the Act.

The Overseas Operations Bill creates a “presumption against prosecution” against service personnel after five years, which ministers have said “sets the legal bar for prosecution significantly”. It also amends the Human Rights Act to include a specific “duty to consider derogation” from the Convention in cases where soldiers are engaged in operations abroad.

However, several senior Tories are concerned that the clause fails to amount to a full opt-out because it simply relies on an emergency brake in the Convention that can only be triggered in a “public emergency threatening the life of the nation”.

Ministers are discussing ways to legislate for a firmer opt-out at a later date.

Senior Government figures want to roll back the influence of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, which several Cabinet ministers have accused of distorting the 67-year-old European Convention on Human Rights.

In March, Martin Howe, an influential Brexiteer QC, suggested that the Government could use its majority to declare that laws such as those providing safeguards to soldiers would apply “notwithstanding” the Human Rights Act.

Writing in The Telegraph, he set out the proposal as a possible temporary measure that could be used to curb the use of human rights laws in UK courts.

Senior Tories insist the ECHR was never intended to be used in the way it is now relied on in asylum cases, but that the Strasbourg court has effectively created new legislation that goes significantly further than the 1953 convention. The Human Rights Act enables British courts to apply the ECHR so cases do not need to be taken directly to Strasbourg.

The latest disclosures come after Mr Johnson accused the EU of threatening to impose a food “blockade” in the Irish Sea that would destroy the “economic and territorial integrity of the UK”.

Writing in The Telegraph, the Prime Minister made a passionate defence of his decision to alter the Withdrawal Agreement using the Internal Market Bill, on which MPs are due to vote this week (see Michael Gove discussing the Bill in the video below).

As party whips telephoned would-be rebels over the weekend, Tobias Ellwood, the Tory chairman of the defence select committee, said: “Unamended, I cannot support this Bill. Let’s secure Brexit – but remember what we stand for.

“Already this Bill is damaging brand UK, diminishing our role-model status as defender of global standards. As we go to the wire, let’s see more British statecraft, less Nixonian Madman Theory.”

In his article, Sir Keir confirmed that Labour intends to oppose the Internal Market Bill as it stands, writing: “If the Government fixes the substantial cross-party concerns that have been raised about the Internal Market Bill, then we are prepared to back it.

“But if they do not, and the talks collapse, then it is their failure and incompetence that will have let the British people down.”

In a joint intervention on Sunday, Sir John Major and Tony Blair will urge MPs to vote the Bill down if Mr Johnson fails to remove the provisions on Northern Ireland customs rules that Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland Secretary, admitted would “break international law in a very specific and limited way”.

They will say: “We both opposed Brexit. We both accept it is now happening. But this way of negotiating, with reason cast aside in pursuit of ideology and cavalier bombast posing as serious diplomacy, is irresponsible, wrong in principle and dangerous in practice.””

  8. Sadiq Khan facing defeat: Leaked internal polling shows shock change in Mayoral election (express, Sep 13, 2020)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1334980/Sadiq-Khan-facing-defeat-Mayor-leadership-race-tory-shaun-bailey-popularity-rise

“SADIQ Khan could be unseated as mayor of London after a spike in popularity for his Conservative rival Shaun Bailey, internal Tory polling has shown.

A new survey commissioned by Conservative Party headquarters sees Mr Bailey starting to close the gap on Mr Khan. The Sunday Telegraph has studied the leaked polling and revealed that Mr Bailey is trailing just seven percentage points behind Mr Khan. The survey places Mr Bailey on 35 percent and Mr Khan on 42 percent.

After news of the survey was shared amongst a select group of Conservative Party activists Mr Baily has decided to step up his campaign to become mayor of London.

The survey of 2,000 people was based upon first preference votes.

The poll found that for the second round of voting Mr Bailey was placed on 45 percent of the voter share, with Mr Khan leading at 55 percent.

Data from the poll shows that support for Mr Bailey has jumped 12 percentage points since a YouGov poll in March.

A recent YouGov poll suggested Londoners are becoming dissatisfied with Mr Khan’s handling of crime, overcrowding on public transport, and housing.

Mr Bailey has said he will be tough on crime if elected.

  10. EU Advocate-General Claims Flanders Halal Ban Illegal, Should Be Overturned (breitbart, Sep 13, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/09/13/eu-advocate-general-claims-flanders-halal-ban-illegal-should-be-overturned/

“European Court of Justice (ECJ) Advocate-General Gerard Hogan has stated that a ban on ritual Halal slaughter in the Belgian region of Flanders violates European Union law and should be overturned.

The non-binding opinion, which comes before the ECJ makes a full ruling on the issue, was announced earlier this week after Muslim and Jewish groups took the matter to court following the passing of the ban in 2017 and its implementation in January of 2019.

According to Advocate-General Hogan, the Flanders ban on ritual slaughter without stunning violates EU law allowing religious exemptions to slaughter animals without the use of any stunning prior to killing the animal, HLN reports.

Michel Vandenbosch, president of the animal rights association Global Action in the Interest of Animals (Gaia), said that he, and lawyer Anthony Godfoid, were both “perplexed” by the opinion and disappointed.

Godfroid, however, was optimistic about the case, saying: “It is frequent that the Court of Justice does not follow the opinion of the Advocate-General.”

“Everyone within the Court of Justice will be aware of the enormous repercussions associated with following the Advocate-General’s advice,” Godfroid said. Several other EU member states have banned ritual slaughter, including Denmark, Sweden, and Slovenia.

The Belgian region of Wallonia also banned the practice after Flanders, with the EU power centre and national capital region of Brussels being the only remaining area in the country that allows ritual slaughter.

Flemish Minister of Animal Welfare Ben Weyts, a member of the centre-right New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), said: “The Advocate-General says that non-stunned slaughter is at the heart of the religious practice, whereas in many Muslim countries there is widespread sedated slaughter.”

Weyts added that such a ruling would allow those of religious beliefs to have extra privileges compared to others and said, “For me, religious freedom never grants a license to kill.””

  11. Bosnian Regional PM Calls on Italy to Help Stop Migrant Surge (breitbart, Sep 13, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/09/13/bosnian-regional-pm-calls-on-italy-to-help-stop-migrant-surge/

“Mustafa Ružni?, Prime Minister of the canton of Una Sana in Bosnia-Herzegovina, has called on Italy to help stop the flow of migrants in the Balkans as tens of thousands continue to pass through.

Una Sana, located in the north-west of the non-EU country, is one of the areas most affected by mass migration as it lies on the border to Croatia, which as an EU member-state marks one of the bloc’s common external borders.

According to Prime Minister Ružni?, at least a hundred thousand migrants have passed through his region in the last two years alone.

In an interview with Italian newspaper Il Giornale, he warned that the “over 100,000 migrants are largely illegal and if we look at their journey to [the EU], 85 per cent have gone to Italy and only 15 per cent to Austria, Germany, and other EU countries.”

He added that the only way to stop the influx was to close the Bosnian eastern border with Serbia — another non-EU country — saying: “We can do this in two ways: the first is to mobilise the resources available to our police agencies by sending 2,000 agents to the border to seal it and block arrivals. The second is to employ the army, but it could create problems with Belgrade,” referring to the seat of the Serbian government.

Tensions in Bosnia are high as many locals are angered over the presence of the migrants. Ružni? said the tensions are due to a huge surge in crime.

“Due to the constant and increased influence of migrants, criminal activity has increased with over 4,000 crimes in the last three years including theft, private house fires, and even more serious crimes. That’s why citizens are reacting through street protests,” he said.

Of the 100,000 migrants that have passed through his area, Ružni? suspected that just ten per cent were legitimate refugees and that thirty per cent may have criminal or even terrorist backgrounds.

The call for help comes just months after Bosnian security minister Fahrudin Radoncic warned prior to the Chinese coronavirus outbreak that as many as 100,000 migrants could head into Western Europe from the Balkan region.”

  14. Houthi militia says Saudi-led coalition launches airstrikes on its military sites in Yemen’s capital (xinhuanet, Sep 13, 2020)
    http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2020-09/13/c_139365140.htm

“Yemen’s Houthi militia said on Sunday that the Saudi-led coalition in the country launched airstrikes on its military positions in Sanaa for the second straight day.

The militia’s al-Masirah TV reported about 14 airstrikes at dawn on Sunday on several military sites in and around the Yemeni capital.

Meanwhile, the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV said the coalition “destroyed four explosive drones in the Houthi-controlled al-Daylami Air Base and targeted other Houthi military positions in Sanaa.”

A day earlier, the coalition said it targeted depots of missiles and drones in eastern Sanaa.

The airstrikes came after the Houthi militia has intensified cross-border drone attacks on Saudi cities over the past days. All Houthi attacks had been intercepted, according to the coalition statements.

Yemen has been mired in civil war since late 2014, when the Iran-backed Houthi rebels seized control of much of the country’s north and forced the internationally-recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of Sanaa.”

    • If this is true it is a massive shift. It makes me wonder if the CCP virus, which was either accidentally or intentionally released, was a kick-off to this Chinese transformation. Perhaps Xi saw the economic writing on the wall, realized that China’s economic charade was doomed, and made the calculation to go full commie by dismantling the mixed economy.

      Private property goes first.

      • I haven’t caught TFI in any lies so far, they exaggerate things at time but so far no lies. This means there is probably a core of truth and the action fits with Xi other actions to bring back full Maoism.

Think back a week or so and there were reports of mansions being seized and high ranking CCP members buying passports from Cyprus and moving money out of China. They were suppose to be political enemies of Xi who were being investigated for corruption but the same articles or others articles from the same source talked about Xi wanting to bring back full communism.

A few months ago you posted an article about how Xi had seen rpts about how the Chinese wouldn’t be able to stop the Wuhan Flu and would probably collapse because of it. Xi was then suppose to have made the decision to spread the Flu around the world to collapse the world to ensure that no nation remained strong enough to conquer China. This report came out around the time when we started hearing about Xi wanting to bring back Maoism. I don’t know if the two are related or not.

    • More and more people are starting to report on the evidence that it was man made, and many of the people who are now saying it was man made point out how the people and labs that say it couldn’t have been man made all have close ties to China.

    • BREITBART – Strzok: Russia Holds ‘Leverage’ over Trump — They Are Influencing His Actions

Former FBI agent Peter Strzok said Russia was holding leverage over President Donald Trump on Sunday’s broadcast of NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Strzok said, “I think it is clear, I believe at the time in 2016, and I continue to believe that Donald Trump is compromised by the Russians. When I say that, I mean that they hold leverage over him that makes him incapable of placing the national interest and national security ahead of his own.”

He continued, “I worked counterintelligence over 20 years. I recruited spies during that time, and I defended against those people who were being recruited in our government. One of the largest ways that foreign governments gained leverage, certainly in the case of the president, is through financial entanglement. If you look at the Trump financial enterprise, particularly with Russia, with Russian money and those related to organized crime and other elements that those interactions have placed him in a position where Russians have leverage over him and are able to influence his actions.”

  19. Chinese State Media: China Must Prepare for War

China must “be prepared” for war amid escalating territorial conflicts with neighboring countries that have increased the risk of military conflict in recent months, the Chinese Communist Party newspaper Global Times argued on Friday.

In an editorial titled “China must be militarily and morally prepared for war,” Global Times editor-in-chief Hu Xijin claimed that although the Chinese people do not want war, Beijing’s worsening territorial disputes with other countries, such as India, threaten to disrupt the status quo.

  20. TORONTO – Sunray Group making nearly $14 million from homeless COVID hotel in Scarborough

Since June, the Delta Toronto East hotel in Scarborough has been hosting 300 homeless youth and adults who get their own rooms with 42-inch flat screen TVs, meals delivered to their rooms and dedicated smoking areas outside the hotel, a Sunray Group insider tells the Toronto Sun.

The insider says the clients get “free WiFi” and King-sized beds or double queens — plus a full bathroom — as part of the city’s efforts to socially distance the homeless during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sunray is billing $114 per person, per room, per night and $33 per person, per day for meals, plus an extra 3% for a destination marketing fee (equating to $3.42 per room per day), which goes directly to the hotel group, the source says.

The homeless clients are provided three meals a day plus a bedtime snack, says the source, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution from Sunray.

And most of the clients are on the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), the source adds.

Like most of the other hotel leases, this one has not yet been posted online by City of Toronto real estate officials due to what a city spokesperson has described as a “short-staffing” situation during COVID-19.

However, if the duration of the lease is until next spring — as appears to be standard with other homeless hotels used by the city during the pandemic — the city will pay out $1.35 million per month to Sunray and $13.5 million for 10 months.

At an average per diem of $220 per client, that means this homeless hotel will cost taxpayers at minimum $1.98 million per month or $19.8 million for 10 months.

    “That’s insane,” the source says.

Sunray bought the hotel — at Kennedy Rd. and Hwy. 401 — in the summer of 2018 and prior to June booked in about 50 youth from Eva’s Initiatives and Kennedy House plus members of the Canadian Armed Forces who were investigating long-term care homes.

Once the military left in mid-June, 250 homeless were immediately moved in from tent cities and Scarborough shelters, the source says.

Homes First runs the program there.

Some 150 hotel staff have been laid off by Sunray, the source says, and even with a union contract, that can continue up to 18 months.

Those who are still there and prepare the meals take them to a central area where Homes First takes over and delivers them to the rooms, using people the agency hired specifically to do so, the insider said.

The source says there are more than 10 security guards per 12-hour shift.

Despite this, the source claims rooms have been trashed and the police are there “all the time” for various incidents.

According to an email obtained by the Toronto Sun, a city asset management official in Shelter, Support and Housing Administration (SSHA) was very concerned there be “two smoking areas” for the homeless clients so that the youth and adults could be kept separate.

The youth smoke in front of the hotel and the adults have an area in the back parking lot to smoke and take their drugs, the source says.

Sunray Group President Kenny Gibson confirmed Friday evening that 300 of 377 rooms are occupied by the homeless and they are given a mix of kings, queens and rooms with two beds plus a flat screen TV.

He also confirmed the room charges and the meal per diem but said they’re only charging for what’s occupied and consumed.

The Sun obtained this Delta Toronto East invoice to the City of Toronto for rooms and meals provided to homless residents displaced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    https://smartcdn.prod.postmedia.digital/torontosun/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/invoice.png?quality=100&strip=all&w=564

Gibson said he wasn’t sure whether the 3% marketing fee was being charged but offered to check and get back to me. I never heard back, despite efforts to reach him Saturday.

“The city reached out to us and we wanted to be good citizens and make sure we support the city,” he said. “We want to keep as many people employed from our standpoint as we can … it provides jobs and we think we’re doing the right thing for the city.”

He added that they have another corporate contract — meaning other people are coming in, apparently not knowing homeless are staying there.

Asked about the issue of clients trashing the hotel, he said they’ve “had a couple of incidents” and it’s “not a problem” for them.

Gibson said they’ve had a couple of graffiti incidents but there is security (he confirmed 10 per 12-hour shift) plus city staff to take care of things at the hotel.

Thousands of anti-Shiite protesters marched through the streets of Karachi, on Saturday against the republishing of the Prophet Mohammed cartoons by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The protest was organised by the Sunni Muslim party ASWJ Ahle Sunnat Wal Jammat, which also demanded the Pakistani government to initiate measures against groups they deemed made blasphemous remarks.

    • Turkey: Protest in Istanbul condemns republishing of Prophet Muhammad cartoons

As many as 200 Muslim protesters gathered at Beyazit Square in Istanbul on Sunday against the republishing of the Prophet Mohammed cartoons by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The protest was organised by the Foundation of Intellectuals of Ehl-i Beyt (Ehl-i Beyt Alimleri Dernegi in Turkish) and Foundation of the Light of Hope (Umut Isigi Dernegi in Turkish) which condemned French government and President Emmanuel Macron for allowing the cartoons to be republished.

Protesters held banners reading ”We are the ummah of Muhammad, we do not submit to humiliation”,
”The hands impinging on the Quran are to be broken”
and ”France is a terrorist state” in Turkish and English.

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/driver-stabbed-german-town-police-probe-motive-72983896

“An assailant stabbed the driver of a car in western Germany early Sunday and investigators weren’t ruling out an Islamic extremist motive for the attack, police said. Two men, including the suspect, were arrested.

Shortly after midnight, the attacker opened the door of a car that was driving slowly through Stolberg, near Aachen and close to the Belgian border, police said on Twitter. He stabbed the driver, who sustained wounds to the arm and later underwent an operation. Police said the injuries weren’t life-threatening.

They said police in the regional hub of Cologne took over the case “because an Islamist background cannot be ruled out.”

They wouldn’t confirm or deny reports in the Bild and Aachener Zeitung newspapers that the assailant shouted “Allahu akbar,” or “God is great” in Arabic.

On Sunday evening, two men — the 21-year-old suspect and another man, age 26, who was in a car with him — were detained in Stolberg, a statement from police and prosecutors said. It added that both men as well as a police officer were injured during the arrest.”

The protestors condemned the desecration of Islam’s holy prophet by the French weekly magazine, calling it as an unforgivable act while demanding a serious response from the Pakistani government.

The protesters said that the government of Islamabad should take it as a duty to defend the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) and that Islamic countries should try to protect the Holy Prophet (PBUH) so that no individual or group would dare to Insult Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The move by the French magazine to publish insulting cartoons about the Holy Prophet (PBUH) has aroused the anger of Muslims worldwide.”
