Reader’s Links for July 30, 2020

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. June Tally: 31 Farm Attacks and 3 Murdered White Farmers in South Africa

Radical race-baiters in the US frequently claim there can be no such thing as racism against white people – a claim that Holocaust survivors, for example, obviously cannot share. In South Africa, violence against farmers, often on the ethnic group of the Boers, has become rampant.

  2. “When are we going to Florida?” asked the boy.

“I’m not sure, now. You’re father is looking into it. There may be complications this year,” replied his mother.

    “Even for dual citizens?”

“He’s gone to ask about it. He will be home soon.”

“I can’t wait. After August comes September. My friends say it’s the best place in the world,” he said.

“We’ll see.” she said. She didn’t want to dampen her son’s enthusiasm, yet, but she knew the prospects were dimming. She couldn’t believe how much her son had grown over the summer. He was a teenager, now, so big and strong. He was becoming a man before her eyes and she knew how much he yearned for great adventure. She also saw how the late July mornings were forcing the river to give back some of its heat in the early-morning mist that hung low over the water.

“Bernie’s dad says nothing makes sense anymore,” the boy continued. He says it’s like the Tower of Babel where people couldn’t understand each other so everything fell apart. He says finding a theory to fit everything that’s going on is making people crazy.” He took another bite of his lunch. He was a smart, inquisitive lad, which didn’t make his mother’s job easy, always.

“I can understand why he’d say that,” she said. “People seem as frustrated by what they don’t know as by what they do know.”

“I think stressed out more than frustrated,” said the boy. “Bernie’s dad says mystery is a weapon, too. He says not everything has to make perfect sense, because people try so hard to find the model that explains everything, the bad guys throw in weird things just to confuse us more. It makes us fight with ourselves.”

“Well, you certainly know what Bernard’s father has to say, don’t you? When did you hear all this?”

“I hear it all the time when we hang out. His dad is very political.” The boy took another bite of his lunch.

She knew Bernard’s family, and liked them. She knew the father was like-minded. He was a doctor of some sort. “What else does he have to say?”

“He says when you’re flying way up high you can see everything. –Things make more sense the higher up you go. You see how the land is laid out and you don’t get confused by all the little things on the ground. He says the tighter the model you try to put down, the harder it is to fit everything into it. This slows you down just when you should be mobilizing. But the more general your model the less you can do with it.”

The boy stopped talking. Something was wrong with his lunch. He was examining something that seemed foreign.

“Oh,” said his mother as she flicked something away. “Never mind that. It’s another one of those darn strange seeds. Maggie’s girl ate one and got sick for a week.”

It was then that the boy’s father arrived. “Hi, honey,” he said as he gave his wife a peck. She looked at him expectantly. “Yes. I got all the answers we needed,” he said with a tone of finality.

    “And?”

“Nobody’s going anywhere this year. –Border’s staying closed to all non-essential travel until further notice. Covid and more damned Covid. Pardon my language.”

“Not even dual citizens?” his wife asked.

    “Not even.”

“But this has never happened before,” she said.

“Maybe so, but that’s the way it is right now. Dear Leader has spoken.”

    “Will it change?”

“Who knows.” The wife saw her husband was grumpy. This meant he no longer wanted to talk about it.

The little Canada goose family ate their lunch in silence. The boy, however, was not giving up. In his imagination he was soaring high above the earth. He could see for miles. After eating he waddled down to the river bank for water. He would talk to Bernie. Maybe they could swim across the St. Lawrence at night. Or fly only at night until they got all the way to Florida. What a great adventure it would be. What wonderful things they would see.

    • Oh, Johnny, if only there were still literary magazines! This is quality stuff.
The Family, dual citizens. Keep me posted. Poor things, Magyar blood would give them options.

      • Thanks Yucki. I guess this is my magazine as long as I stay on point. But really, thanks.

    • That is my take on the Dollar, it is still the strongest currency on earth and if/when it goes we are back to the Gold and Sliver exchanges with the manipulators trying to gain and maintain control.

    • Yep, they’ll keep trying to talk it down, so let ’em gnash their teeth waiting. We best use it while we can.

  3. London bloodbath: Man dies after brutal stabbing in Hounslow – police issue appeal (express, Jul 30, 2020)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1316320/london-news-london-stabbing-hounslow-stabbing-green-lane-met-police-uk-crime

The chairman of the Metropolice Federation, Ken Marsh praised the officer for his actions.

He said: “It was a routine stop and search operation, and the suspect stabbed the officer under his armpit, then ran off.

“Despite bleeding profusely, the officer gave chase with two colleagues and actually helped detain the suspect.

“The injured officer is OK now, thankfully.

“He’s obviously walking wounded but he’ll be fine.”

The Metropolitan Police Federation wrote on Twitter: “Thankfully injuries are not as bad as they could have been.

“Yet again shows the dangers Metropolitan Police officers face each and every every day.”

  4. Migrants pictured drying on Kent bench after dumping their stolen dinghy (telegraph, Jul 30, 2020)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/07/30/migrants-pictured-drying-kent-bench-dumping-stolen-dinghy/

“A group of five migrants have been pictured drying off on a bench on the Kent coast having dumped the stolen dinghy they used to cross The Channel.

The photographs were taken in Saint Margaret’s at Cliffe on Thursday morning.

More than 3,000 migrants have now made it across the Channel to the UK this year.

And with hot weather forecast for the next couple of days – it could mean another influx is imminent migrants typically opting to make the trip when the temperature is warmer.

Kent Police confirmed it was assisting the Border Force and HM Coastguard following reports of suspected migrants seen in the Deal area at around 8.30am.

Campaigners have said that evictions of migrants from camps in Calais are at their highest intensity for years and that attempts to cross the English Channel have risen as a result.

This was the scene in Kent this morning

Aid workers in northern France say police evictions are happening at the highest levels since the Jungle camp was cleared in 2016.

In one incident, more than 500 migrants were put onto buses and moved away ahead of a visit from UK Home Secretary Priti Patel earlier this month.

Clare Moseley, founder of the humanitarian charity Care4Calais, said conditions in the French city are as bad as she has seen since 2016 and criticised police tactics.

Calais MP Pierre-Henri Dumont said that he believes there is “no link” between the evictions and attempts to cross the Channel.

He said the huge number of migrants trying to reach the UK is down to “British law and way of life” and said migrants would rather live secretly in the UK than claim asylum in France.

More than 3,100 migrants have made it across the Channel to the UK in 2020, analysis by the Press Association shows.

Ms Moseley, who runs charity Care4Calais, said a safe, legal process for the people in Calais is essential to end what she says is a humanitarian crisis.

She also criticised police tactics – including the use of tear gas – and the forced evictions of migrants from the camps where they live.

Ms Moseley said: “This policy is cruel and it is counterproductive. It succeeds only in increasing the numbers of people desperate enough to make a dangerous attempt to cross the Channel.

“Priti Patel and the French authorities are only adding to the chaos in the Channel, they have no strategy to protect vulnerable refugees and get control of our borders long term.

“The people in Calais are normal people: doctors, builders, sons and fathers. Terrible things have happened to them, they’re fleeing wars, torture and persecution.

“The least we can do is give them a fair hearing and treat them with decency and dignity.”

She called on Ms Patel and her counterparts in France to “stop grandstanding” and tackle the root of the problem.

Calais MP Pierre-Henri Dumont said he too noticed a “huge dismantlement” of a migrant camp before Ms Patel’s visit.

However, he said that since then migrants have returned to the area in larger numbers.

He added: “To me, there is no link between the dismantlement and the crossings. The huge number of crossings is the result of the British law and way of life, making it easier for the migrants to live in clandestinity in the UK, to work and find a place to live, than in France.

“Actually, the migrants in Calais would rather live clandestinely in the UK than claiming asylum in France.”

He also defended police actions in the area.

Following their joint visit to Calais on July 12, Ms Patel and new French interior minister Gerald Darmanin agreed to create a Franco-British intelligence cell in an effort to reduce the numbers of small boats making it to the UK.

On the same day, a record number of migrants made it to the UK, with at least 180 making it across the Channel.”

  5. Germany: Two Syrian asylum seekers pushed a man in front of a train and attacked people who wanted to come to the aid of the victim

In connection with the attempted homicide at Waghäusel station last Tuesday, the Bruchsal Criminal Investigation Department was able to investigate two suspects and on Wednesday made a temporary arrest in a shared accommodation for asylum seekers. At the request of the public prosecutor’s office in Karlsruhe, they were brought before the judge on Thursday, who ordered both suspects – a Syrian-born pair of brothers aged 22 and 25 – to be imprisoned in pretrial detention. The 25-year-old is said to have brutally attacked and pulled the 54-year-old victim into the track bed for no apparent reason and subsequently prevented him from attempting to leave the track bed again. At the same time, the 22-year-old is said to have threatened people coming to the victim’s aid and thus facilitated the crime. The 54-year-old victim, who was hit by a train as a result of the attack, is now on the mend and can be questioned. The man claimed to have been attacked unexpectedly for no apparent reason.

  6. More than 130 crimes committed – Alleged underage Syrian refugee keeping German courts busy

After the knife attack in Gera in the street at the beginning of February 2020, the main accused, a Syrian “refugee” (15 years old) who had attacked two German men (29, 35 years old) with a cutter knife and seriously injured them, was sentenced to five years juvenile sentence for attempted manslaughter. The two other accomplices, 19-year-old Ramin N. from Iran and 21-year-old Ali Sina M. from Afghanistan, were given the new-citizen privilege – only suspended sentences for grievous bodily harm. The Syrian splendid specimen, who came to Germany with his mother a few years ago and was “obviously severely traumatized” by the war, is not a blank sheet. With more than 130 criminal offences, the person seeking protection resp. repeat offender immortalized himself in the statistics. Mohammad D. was sentenced to two years and eight months imprisonment by the Gera District Court, but miraculously the Syrian passport turned up, which was presumably considered lost until then, and according to the identity card, he was not yet 14 years old at the time of the crime and is incapable of crime.Numerous crimes including a serious knife attack in Gera, one may assume that this Syrian criminal will also continue to stay in Germany after serving his prison sentence, deportation is not an option, after all, he is a “person in need of protection” who may be threatened with persecution or even worse in Syria.

  7. Why Muslims despise the German police

The assumption that young Muslim men in general do not respect the police is of course wrong. In Algeria, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, their respect for police officers is very strong. Because if they do something wrong there in their interaction with the officer, he beats them with a rubber truncheon or shoots them in the leg. That is the language that Muslims understand. It is understood across borders without an interpreter. An understanding, communication-oriented German police officer, on the other hand, is taken note of as a laughing stock. This is how cultural misunderstandings arise, which have been escalating from time to time, not just since yesterday, as recently in Stuttgart and Frankfurt.Such insights can even be read in the newspapers in Germany, for example behind the paywall of the newspaper “Welt”. There the 79-year-old North Africa expert Samuel Schirmbeck shares his experiences with young Muslim men with us:

“The young Muslims participating in the riots do not see the public space as their own, not as part of the res publica, but as hostile territory belonging to the infidels. For this reason, relevant rules of public order have no meaning for them, and the police deserve no respect, especially as they do not use paramilitary brutality here, as in the authoritarian-dictatorial countries of origin of the migrants. Therefore the police are not taken seriously.”Irrespective of the question of violence, according to Schirmbeck, there is a basic attitude of contempt for non-Muslims in the Islamic cultural sphere that most Europeans cannot even imagine:

“In Germany, people have no idea how fundamental the distinction between ‘believers’ and ‘non-believers’, between ‘Islamic’ and ‘un-Islamic’, is for the Muslim world. It dominates behaviour and thinking. The high praise of the ‘believers’ and the hellish condemnation of the ‘unbelievers’ is the Qur’anic leitmotif. To be a ‘believer’ means first of all to be a Muslim, a member of the ‘best community’ of all times, no matter how devoutly the member of this community obeys the divine commands in everyday life.As a Muslim you are always superior to the ‘unbelievers’, even if you commit crimes, because you remain a Muslim even then. The German police has to stand back. The permanent condemnation of the ‘infidels’ by the Koran does the rest to make integration into Western society more difficult. All these attitudes have not disappeared in the Islamic world during the Age of Enlightenment, but are still alive.”These enlightening words should be carved into pieces of wood and nailed to the foreheads of all those do-gooders who still believe that a multi-cultural society is achievable and the best of all possible worlds.

  8. A time of racial justice drives new push to rename birds

This summer’s movement for racial justice and atonement finally spurred Mississippi to remove the Confederate symbol from its state flag, Washington’s NFL team to change its racist team name, NASCAR to ban the Confederate flag from its events, and statues of Confederates and other racist historical figures to be taken down. And those are just a few examples of changes we’ve seen in the realm of sports, corporate brands, and other institutions in the last two months.

Will the names we use for birds be next? The practice of naming species after people was common in the 1800s, when white naturalists honored their friends, family members, or colleagues (often other white naturalists) with eponyms — birds or other animals or plants named in their honor.

Today, many of those names are fraught with ethical problems.

McCown’s Longspur, for example, was named for an officer of the Confederacy who defended slavery and also battled multiple Native American tribes. Townsend’s Solitaire and Townsend’s Warbler bear the name of John Kirk Townsend, a naturalist who robbed the graves of Native Americans. John James Audubon, revered for his art, nevertheless also robbed Indigenous graves — a fact that casts a shadow over the oriole and shearwater named for him.

Reckoning with the Racist Past of Bird Names

Amid protests over racism and inequality over the last months, Confederate statues and similar markers across the U.S. have been removed — some quietly, in the middle of the night, and some toppled by crowds. A similar reckoning is happening in the bird world when it comes to eponymous and honorific English common bird names — human names placed on birds, either to honor or memorialize someone.

“They’re essentially verbal statues for birds and the bird community, because these mostly white men were part of a really dark time in our history,” said Jordan Rutter, who is helping lead an initiative with co-founder Gabriel Foley and others in the birding community, called Bird Names for Birds. Rutter has a Master’s degree in ornithology, and has been birding as long as she can remember.

“Twitter came under fire at Israel’s Knesset Wednesday for flagging President Donald Trump’s tweets while allowing those by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei calling for Israel’s destruction to remain untouched. 10. Police Sound Alarm on Scotland’s ‘Dangerous’ Hate Crime Bill (breitbart, Jul 30, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/07/30/police-alarm-scotland-dangerous-hate-crime-bill/

“The Scottish government’s hate crime proposals could “devastate” the public’s relationship with the police, officers have warned.

The proposed Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Bill allegedly “seeks to modernise and extend existing hate crime legislation”.

But the Scottish Police Federation (SPF) has warned that the proposed legislation would lead to the “policing of what people think or feel” and the “criminalisation of what is said in private”, The Scotsman reports.

In its consultation response to the bill, the SPF expressed concern over how the law — which criminalises even the likelihood of “stirring up hatred”, and does not require intent to be demonstrated in order to prosecute an alleged hate crime — is “too vague to be implemented” and would create much more work for officers.

Callum Steele, SPF general secretary, said: “We are firmly of the view this proposed legislation would see officers policing speech and would devastate the legitimacy of the police in the eyes of the public.

“That can never be an acceptable outcome – and we should never forget that the police in Scotland police only with the consent of the people.

“Police officers are all too aware that there are individuals in society who believe that to feel insulted or offended is a police matter.

“The Bill would move even further from policing and criminalising of deeds and acts to the potential policing of what people think or feel, as well as the criminalisation of what is said in private.”

Current “hate speech” laws are already very strong in the liberal-run country, with police having recently investigated signs which appeared throughout Perth reading “it’s ok to be white”, which were branded “atrocious” by the Deputy First Minister of the Scottish Government.

Scottish YouTuber and comedian Count Dankula, who recently spoke out against the proposed bill, was found guilty in 2018 for committing the “hate crime” of filming his girlfriend’s dog doing a Nazi salute in what he described as a “joke video for a laugh”.

BBC Scotland editor Sarah Smith commented last week that it was “quite an achievement” for the globalist Scottish government “to have united the Catholic Church and the National Secular Society in opposition to the plans — along with academics, playwrights, and newspaper columnists who all say they fear the proposed legislation could pose a threat to their freedom of speech”.

The Free Church of Scotland has warned that “there is a real risk of Christians and others falling foul of this legislation” inadvertently, by preaching Biblical ethics and social teaching.

The church also said it was “deeply concerned” that Christian teaching materials, books, and even the Bible could be “confiscated and destroyed by the police” as a result of the bill, which would criminalise the mere possession of inflammatory material.

Breitbart London previously reported on the case of a Christian street preacher who was locked up and charged with a hate crime after quoting from the Book of Genesis in response to a teenager’s questions on the Biblical view on homosexuality.

University of Abertay senior lecturer in sociology and criminology, Dr Stuart Waiton, sounded the alarm on the bill. He described it as “profoundly dangerous” and “possibly… the most illiberal and intolerant piece of legislation in any liberal democracy, worldwide”, with wording that is “incredibly flexible and subjective”.

“Unlike the laws in the rest of the UK, where the crime of ‘stirring up’ hatred needs evidence that it is deliberate and also threatening, here we have a new law that potentially requires neither,” he said. The professor added that the legislation was so intrusive that it would open up “the possibility of comments at dinner parties becoming criminal offences”.

But the Scottish National Party (SNP) administration argues that the proposals “create a protection for, particularly minority groups and vulnerable groups in our society, against being targeted for hatred and being targets for hatred”.

Scotland’s justice secretary, Humza Yousaf, has dismissed criticisms of the bill, telling BBC Scotland: “I don’t accept that this curtails free speech at all. Free speech in itself is never an unfettered right.”

The private school-educated minister, who is a vocal mass migration enthusiast, recently also called on social media companies to do more to ban and censor what he called “hateful accounts” after backlash over a speech he gave denouncing the fact that in Scotland, which is 96 per cent white, the majority of top jobs are held by white people.”

  11. The Times: Coronavirus Economic Slump Pushing More Migrants to Europe (breitbart, Jul 30, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/07/30/the-times-coronavirus-economic-slump-pushing-more-migrants-to-europe/

“The knock-on effects of Coronavirus slowing economic activity is pushing migrants from countries that were already suffering towards Europe, a Times of London report claims.

Noting the surging number of arrivals coming to Europe in the first half of 2020, despite most global travel otherwise having halted or otherwise fallen dramatically, a co-authored report by Layli Foroudi in Tunisia and Philip Willan in Rome tracks the aspirations and progress of several migrants as they attempt to enter Europe.

Describing the trade of illegal people smugglers clandestinely bringing migrants across the Mediterranean to the European Union, the report claims the impact of the coronavirus outbreak has exacerbated several push factors already emptying Tunia of its people. After the civil war, and economic stagnation — now intensified by the coronavirus pandemic — the report states 100 or more people are now leaving Tunisian towns for Europe every day.

    The Times reports:

The number of crossings from Tunisia and Libya from January to June has doubled compared with last year, according to the UN high commissioner for refugees. In June the number of deaths was up by 20 per cent, with a shipwreck near the Tunisian port city of Sfax claiming 61 lives on June 4.

…The civil war in Libya has forced to many to leave and seek a new life, but analysts say the coronavirus outbreak is now a leading factor in driving people to risk the perilous journey.

“The lack of economic opportunities in the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis in Tunisia is pushing more people to cross the sea,” said Chiara Cavalcanti, from the UNHCR in Tunisia.

  12. French Mayor Viciously Beaten After Telling Youths to Stop Shooting Off Fireworks (breitbart, Jul 30, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/07/30/french-mayor-viciously-beaten-telling-youths-stop-shooting-off-fireworks/

“A group of youths brutally beat the mayor of a small town in the French department of Isère after he attempted to stop them from shooting off fireworks.

Williams Dufour, mayor of Miribel-Les-Échelles, was attacked at around 9 pm on Monday after he had gone to the church square where several youths were letting off fireworks.

According to a report from Actu 17, the youths attacked the 51-year-old mayor so badly he received hospital treatment. He was given seven days’ leave from work due to the extent of his injuries.

Dufour described his injuries to local media shortly after the attack, saying: “I have a dislocated finger, a burn on one hand, and stitches in my brow bone.”

He added that he was accompanied by two of his deputies when he confronted the youths, and despite identifying himself as mayor, the mob still attacked him.

“These are boys of around 16 to 18 years old, who are obviously not from the town,” Dufour said. He claimed there were at least six youths involved and they all fled on mopeds after the attack. A witness identified the licence plate of one scooter, but no one has been arrested as of Tuesday.

While attacks on elected officials in France are relatively rare, attacks by “youths” on police officers and firefighters have become increasingly common in various areas of the country.

In May, police in Strasbourg arrested 20 individuals after firefighters were attacked by a mob that threw various projectiles at them, including Molotov cocktails. Most of those arrested were aged between 13 and 16, with a smaller number of adults who are said to have directed the attack.

Earlier that month in the commune of Romans-sur-Isère there were several days of clashes between youths and police, despite the active Wuhan coronavirus lockdown measures at the time.”

  13. – BBC News – Trump-touted Covid-19 drug ineffective says Fauci

US President Donald Trump has again defended the use of hydroxychloroquine to ward off coronavirus, contradicting his own public health officials.

He said the malaria medication was only rejected as a Covid-19 treatment because he had recommended its use.

His remarks come after Twitter banned his eldest son for posting a clip promoting hydroxychloroquine.

There is no evidence the drug can fight the virus, and regulators warn it may cause heart problems.

Top US virus researcher Dr Anthony Fauci has called President Donald Trump’s sharing of a video which included claims masks are not needed to fight Covid-19 “not helpful”.

The video promotes a drug widely disproven to be effective in treating Covid-19.

“Bangladeshi police said they arrested three suspects in the bombing of a Dhaka police station and denied a claim of responsibility by the Islamic State group, saying the attackers were motivated by criminal intent.

Five people, including four police, were injured when a bomb hidden inside a weight machine-like object went off inside the Pallabi police station on Wednesday morning. The Islamic State group claimed credit for the blast in a statement the same day.

Three suspected hitmen were arrested Wednesday along with two loaded firearms and another weight machine-like object, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Krishna Pada Roy.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism and Transnational Crime Saiful Islam denied any links between the Islamic State group and the blast.

“IS made this kind of false claim in the past, too. This is also part of that process,” he said. “As per the information available so far, criminal intentions were behind the blast and we’re investigating the incident.”

He also described as baseless claims made by U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group’s founder Rita Katz.

Katz, in the tweet Wednesday, said the blast marked the first attack in Dhaka since last August and was part of a campaign in the lead-up to the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

  28. WSJ – Italy Lawmakers Strip Matteo Salvini of Immunity in Migrant Ship Case

The former interior minister faces a possible trial for refusing to let a ship carrying 150 migrants dock in Italy last year

MILAN—The Italian Senate voted to lift the immunity of Matteo Salvini, paving the way for the country’s former interior minister and the leader of the opposition to face a possible trial for refusing to let a ship carrying 150 migrants dock in Italy last year, and bringing the issue of migration to Europe back to the fore as the continent tries to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Prosecutors in Sicily are seeking to charge Mr. Salvini, who heads the far-right League, with illegally detaining the migrants

EUROPRAVDA – Matteo Salvini: Italy’s far-right leader loses his parliamentary immunity

Italian senators have backed stripping far-right leader Matteo Salvini of his parliamentary immunity.

It means Salvini could now face a trial for allegedly illegally detaining migrants at sea. It’s in relation to a case last year when he refused to let a rescue ship carrying scores of migrants dock at the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Thursday’s vote was close. 149 senators voted for, 141 against.

“I am proud to have defended Italy and I would do it again,” said Salvini, reacting to the vote.

Prosecutors in the Sicilian city of Palermo accuse Salvini of abusing his powers as then-interior minister in August 2019 to prevent the Spanish NGO Open Arms ship from docking in Lampedusa. The rescue vessel was marooned at sea for nearly three weeks with more than 150 migrants on board.

He insisted the decision to stop migrants from getting off the ship — until a deal was reached with EU countries to take them in — was reached collectively within the government.

That’s the same defence Salvini is using in another similar trial, in which he is accused of blocking migrants from disembarking from the Italian “Gregoretti” coast guard boat last July.

In February, the Senate voted to strip Salvini of his parliamentary immunity in that case. The preliminary hearing has been postponed three times due to the coronavirus pandemic and is now scheduled to take place in Sicily on October 3.

  29. Greece Begins Giving Asylum Seekers on Aegean Islands €2,000 to Go Home (breitbart, Jul 30, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/07/30/greece-begins-giving-asylum-seekers-aegean-islands-e2000-go-home/

“The Greek government has begun giving €2,000 to asylum seekers located on various Aegean islands to incentivise them to go back to their home countries.

The Voluntary Return & Reintegration Programme (AVRR), which is funded by the European Union (EU), looks to support asylum seekers who wish to return to their countries. At the same time, it helps the Aegean islands, many of which are overwhelmed with migrants.

The programme was initially rolled out in March but has remained largely inactive due to the border closures caused by the Wuhan coronavirus lockdowns, Greek newspaper Proto Thema reported on Wednesday.

The announcement also coincided with a surge of migrants attempting to cross over into Greece earlier this year after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an opened the gates to Europe for migrants in Turkey.

Greek officials estimated that well over 50,000 migrants attempted to cross into the country before Erdo?an was forced to close the borders due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Minister of Migration and Asylum, Notis Mitarakis, commented on the AVRR programme, saying: “Following the resumption of forced deportations, we aim in the coming weeks to make the first flights of voluntary returns. We are implementing a strict but fair immigration policy, and we aim to decongest both the islands and the whole country from the surge in migration flows in previous years.”

A total of 5,000 asylum seekers are eligible for the €2,000 (£1,800/$2,350) grants with the qualifications including having arrived on the islands of Leros, Samos, Lesbos, Kos, or Chios by the end of last year.

Many Greek islands continue to house migrant numbers far beyond the capacity of the reception centres located on them, particularly in Lesbos where the population of the notorious Moria camp was said to be at least 19,000 in March.

The overpopulation in Moria has also led to many conflicts in the camp, most recently the murder of a 21-year-old Afghani within the residential area of the facility last Sunday. Three Afghan nationals have so far been placed under arrest in connection with the murder.”

  31. Videographer stabbed at Portland protests ‘for being a conservative journalist’
By Daily Caller News Foundation July 30, 2020

A videographer was stabbed after confronting a man who he claims was following him while he covered the protests in Portland, Ore., The Oregonian reported.

Andrew Duncomb, 25, works under the name “Black Rebel” and was documenting the protests in Portland when he noticed a man was following the group he was with around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday. Duncomb passed his camera off to a friend before putting his arm around the man’s shoulder and asking him why he was following the group. The man did not verbally respond but stabbed Dumcomb in the back just missing his spinal cord.

“I was stabbed for being a conservative journalist,” Duncomb told the Oregonian. “My main goal was to show that it wasn’t just the feds creating the problems.”

  32. Italy’s Salvini to face new trial over migrant ship blockade (BBC, Jul 30, 2020)
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-53592852

“Italy’s Senate has voted to allow the prosecution of ex-interior minister Matteo Salvini for blocking a migrant ship off Italy’s coast last August.

More than 100 migrants were stuck on the Spanish rescue ship Open Arms for 19 days off the isle of Lampedusa.

Prosecutors in Sicily accuse Mr Salvini of illegal detention, which could bring a jail term of up to 15 years.

The anti-immigration, right-wing politician is already set to stand trial in a similar case.

The Senate voted 149 to 141 to strip him of his parliamentary immunity in the latest case, paving the way for prosecution.

Mr Salvini, 47, insists that preventing irregular migrants from disembarking in Italy was government policy at the time.

“Defending Italy is not a crime. I am proud of it, I would do it again, and I will do it again,” he said on Wednesday.

His blockade of the ship caused an outcry and a serious split in the coalition government at the time. His League party was in a coalition with the anti-establishment Five Star, but now he is an opposition MP.

Opinion polls suggest the League’s popularity has slumped during the coronavirus crisis, though a Demopolis poll this week showed it still the top party, on 25.4%, followed by the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) on 21%.

Coronavirus restrictions have prevented Mr Salvini holding rallies up and down the country or posing for selfies on the beach – campaign tactics which have endeared him to many Italians. His popularity is driven by prolific use of social media, in which he condemns the influx of migrants from North Africa.

In February, the Senate voted to strip him of his parliamentary immunity in a similar case, involving the Italian coastguard boat, Gregoretti.

The opening court hearing in that case has been postponed until 3 October because of coronavirus restrictions.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte had called Mr Salvini “obsessed” with keeping migrants out of Italian ports.

All the parties in his governing coalition voted on Thursday to lift Mr Salvini’s immunity.

Mr Salvini tweeted defiantly on Thursday: “By sending me for trial they’re giving me a big gift, but unlike the others I’m going there with my head held high and my back straight”.

Last summer Open Arms filed a legal complaint against Mr Salvini’s block on their ship and finally on 20 August the authorities allowed it to dock in Lampedusa, a tiny island off Tunisia that has struggled for years to cope with boatloads of migrants.

By that time, many of the migrants had already been allowed off the ship.”

  33. Over 100 police agencies refuse to provide security for DNC
By Rusty Weiss July 30, 2020

This time it’s personal. After two solid months of being dumped on daily by the Left, over 100 police agencies have backed out of providing security at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Milwaukee next month.

WTMJ reports that, according to Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales, this isn’t out of spite, though the men in blue would be justified if it were. Rather, the departments are concerned with new orders that restrict the ability to use tear gas, pepper spray, and other crowd control measures.

Earlier this month, the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission issued a series of directives to Morales, one of which ordered him to work with the commission to change department policy to discontinue the use of the aforementioned chemicals. They threatened him with firing if he did not comply.

Meantime, the DNC has been reduced to a mostly virtual event, with actual physical attendees ranging in only the hundreds. Still, police anticipate large protests from rioters dragging out racial grievances well after the death of George Floyd in Minnesota in May.

  34. Pro-Trump black pols asked in same week whether they’re being paid to back Trump
By Ben Bowles July 30, 2020

How much do black lives matter to the Left? Maybe the more salient question would be how much black votes matter to the Left.

That question was suggested by the kind of week Vernon Jones and Bruce LeVell have been having.

Jones, in case the name is unfamiliar, is a member of the Georgia House of Representatives. He is a Democrat. He is also black. And he supports Donald Trump.

That combination of factors led to his systematic harassment by the Democratic Party in April after Jones endorsed Trump for a second term. “I’m sick and tired of me and my family being attacked and harassed by the Democrat Party for putting my country before my party. I take pride in being an independent thinker. My first amendment right to freedom of speech is under siege,” he said in a statement announcing his intention to vacate his seat. A day later he recanted his resignation, noting his intention to keep fighting for his beliefs.
