Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    • Pelosi: Trump’s Inaction on Russia Is a ‘Dereliction of Duty’

[…]this bounty on our soldiers be treated so lightly, without investigation and the rest, is so inappropriate. It is dereliction of duty.

For him to ignore the facts in a presidential daily briefing as a matter of habit, is dereliction of duty. And the third point I would make is there’s enough reason for us to believe that this dereliction of duty cannot just be the course of action we take. We must institute sanctions against Russia, and we must do it right away.”

  4. Yesterday a man at a hardware store in Canada was denied the ability to pay for his purchase in cash. I wondered if this is legal:

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/globalnews.ca/news/6878824/legal-for-businesses-to-refuse-cash-canada/amp/

This is despite no evidence exists to suggest the digital keypad used for electronic transactions is any safer.

This will also mean that payment for any item, including a car or a house, should be permitted should two agreeable parties decide to transact in gold or silver or booze or bullets whence fiat currency becomes sufficiently devalued, rendering it untrustworthy or impractical.

    • Here is what it means.

The government can and will decide at any given moment what is allowed and not allowed as a medium of transaction. No deviation will be allowed. Remember how Winston Smith in 1984’s job was to constantly rewrite history every day to match the Party’s official history?

Let me bring you back to the great recession of I think it was the 1980s.

People were short of money in a big way. Bars and various businesses that were dependant on mostly working class people were in serious trouble and were closing.

Some of them decided to accept Canadian Tire money on par. After all, its better than bankruptcy and you can get a lot of what you need at Canadian Tire so why not.

People went into their sock drawers by the tens of thousands and hauled out their bank rolls of those bills with the Scotsman printed on them (Hey! Isn’t that racist? Using a Scotsman as a symbol of being tight with money?) and headed out to the bars. One in particular around Scott and Holland St. if memory serves, was on the news for allowing CT$.

The government, I think at the time it was Mulroney, but a fast stop to that.

Apparently by law, no one may make a competing currency with the government. Somehow, VISA, AMEX and Mastercard are exempt but I guess thats because inventing credit using Canadian money doesn’t count.

I agree with you though. Anyone should be able to choose any medium of exchange they want including gold, silver, beads, and exchange of services.

But that isn’t how it will go.

The government will decide at any moment that your entire lifetime of wealth, now represented as 0s and 1s on bank hard drives 100% controlled by the Trudeau government (Remember when Trudeau ordered all banks to fork over ALL translation records of all Canadians including cash withdrawals from ATMs WITH their names and addresses? So not a METADATA project) can be WIPED OUT in an instant. And that whatever else you have handy is worthless. Or if you try and use it, you are now a criminal.

      Welcome to communism.

  5. US Sanctions on Nord Stream 2 Terminate Trans-Atlantic Partnership – Germany’s Schroeder (sputniknews, Jul 1, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/202007011079764695-us-sanctions-on-nord-stream-2-terminate-trans-atlantic-partnership—germanys-schroeder/

“Former German Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Rosneft Gerhard Schroeder believes that the US sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 project are a deliberate termination of the transatlantic partnership, according to his position prepared for the public hearings of the Bundestag Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy.

“[Sanctions against the NATO ally during the economic downturn] are nothing but a deliberate termination of the transatlantic partnership,” Schroeder was quoted as saying by the Handelsblatt business newspaper.

The politician added that the sanctions were “an attack on the European economy, an unacceptable encroachment on the EU sovereignty and the energy security of Western Europe.”

According to the former chancellor, the financial consequences of the sanctions would be extremely serious, as they would jeopardize investments of 12 billion euros ($13.5 billion) in European infrastructure, and European consumers would face additional costs of four billion euros per year.

“More than 120 companies in the field of shipbuilding, engineering, environmental protection and security, which are involved or have been engaged in the Nord Stream 2 project, are directly affected … Each of these companies represent European jobs that are at risk,” Schroeder added.

In early June, US senators introduced a bipartisan bill that would tighten sanctions on Nord Stream 2 to potentially hit numerous European companies providing insurance, port and licensing services, banks and governmental organizations that work for the project. According to media reports, Germany is putting together a set of countermeasures to mobilize a coordinated EU-wide response.

The Nord Stream 2 project aims to lay a 745-mile-long twin pipeline that will carry up to 55 billion cubic meters (1.942 trillion cubic feet) of gas per year from Russia to Germany, passing through the territorial waters or exclusive economic zones of Denmark, Finland, Germany, Russia and Sweden. On December 20, US President Donald Trump signed the 2020 defense budget, which included sanctions against the project, forcing Allseas, a Swiss company responsible for laying down the pipes, to withdraw from the project with just 100 miles left to lay. Russia is now finishing the pipeline on its own.”

  6. Pakistan Allegedly Moves 20,000 Soldiers to Gilgit-Baltistan Amid India-China Tensions (sputniknews, Jul 1, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/military/202007011079764004-pakistan-allegedly-moves-20000-soldiers-to-gilgit-baltistan-amid-india-china-tensions/

“India and Pakistan have been at loggerheads since August 2019 when New Delhi stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status. With the rise in border tensions between India and China, Pakistan is looking for an opportunity to open up a two-pronged attack on India, say intelligence sources.

Pakistan has moved two divisions of troops along the Line of Control on its side of Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan, the area that adjoins Ladakh on the north, intelligence sources have indicated. The development is being seen by Indian intelligence as part of Pakistan’s efforts to open up a two-front war with India.

As many as 20,000 Pakistani soldiers have been moved to the northern Ladakh region to match Chinese deployments, according to the sources. The level of troops Pakistan has deployed is greater than following the Balakot air strikes in 2019.

Sources have said there have been a series of meetings between Chinese and Pakistani officials in recent weeks, followed by the massing of troops in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Indian news website The Economic Times has quoted sources as saying that Chinese officials are holding talks with cadres of terror outfit Al Badr to incite violence in Jammu and Kashmir. Radars on the Pakistan-side are reportedly fully activated and on high alert.

China landed a refueller aircraft in Skardu in Pakistan-administered Kashmir earlier this week
The rise in Chinese air activity near to eastern Ladakh has raised the possibility of the Pakistan Air Force using airbases in Gilgit-Baltistan.

While India is holding talks with China on the disengagement of troops along the 4,057km Line of Actual Control, satellite images have shown a rise in troop deployments and armoured vehicles on both sides of the border.

The development comes just weeks after India and China engaged in violent clashes in Ladakh that left 20 Indian soldiers dead.”

  7. Terrorists Kill Indian Soldier and Civilian Bystander in Kashmir Attack (sputniknews, Jul 1, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/india/202007011079763241-terrorists-kill-indian-soldier-and-civilian-bystander-in-kashmir-attack/

“Last week, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir were placed on high alert after over 200 youths from the valley with Pakistani visas were reported missing. Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police Dilbag Singh has accused Pakistan of sending in trained terrorists through various areas of the valley.

At least one soldier and a civilian were killed and three other security personnel were injured after a group of terrorists attacked a convoy in the Sopore area of Kashmir on Wednesday morning.

According to a senior paramilitary forces official, the terrorists had attacked a road opening party held by the Central Reserve Police Force while they were placing a checkpoint along with Jammu and Kashmir police personnel on the Sopore Bypass highway.

“We lost one Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and a civilian. Three other CRPF personnel have been shifted to hospital for treatment. They are said to be in critical condition,” Director General of Police Dilbag Singh said.

The area has been sealed off and a search operation was launched soon after the attack, he added. Indian Army officials and police have also reached the spot.

“Our officials have rescued a three year old boy, whose lost his father (the civilian) in the attack. They had come out to fetch milk in the morning, when the attack took place,” Singh added.

Over the last few weeks, security forces and terrorists have been involved in several gun fights throughout Jammu and Kashmir. According to official data, more than 130 terrorists have been killed so far this year.

In another incident, one terrorist was killed in a failed infiltration bid in Keri Area along the Line of Control early in the morning. Sources said a group of terrorists was spotted 400 metres inside the Indian side of the Line of Control. “The group was fired upon, and one was killed. An AK-47 with two magazines was recovered,” army sources said.

India and Pakistan have been accusing each other of sponsoring terrorism – and both have denied these allegations. On Tuesday, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan accused India of being behind the Monday Karachi Stock Market attack, in which three people were killed. However, India categorically rejected the allegation and rejected the statement as “absurd”. “

“Transgender ideology is leaving a “corrosive impact” on society, according to a new study calling for the scrapping of gender recognition reforms.

The report by the Civitas think tank accuses public institutions of being captivated by an “ideology of transgenderism” that is unable to defend the sex-based rights of women.

The research by Dr Joanna Williams, former director of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Kent, calls on the Government to announce a moratorium on all reform of the Gender Recognition Act for at least the duration of parliament.

It also calls for a ban on the prescribing of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones to anyone under the age of 18 and for children “socially transitioning” at school without the permission of their parents to be prohibited….”

“The Government proposals for some pupils to focus on English and maths when they return to school in September could lead to “cultural apartheid”, an expert has warned as headteachers vow to ignore the Government’s advice.

Schools may teach a slimmed-down curriculum focusing on maths and English when children return in September, with the full syllabus not reappearing until next summer, according to draft government plans.

Some subjects may be put on hold until 2021 to allow time for pupils to catch up on the core subjects given insufficient attention during lockdown, under plans being considered by ministers.

Prof Lee Eliot Major, an expert in social mobility at Exeter University, said that he understands the importance of focussing on maths and English but added that the move could lead to a cultural gulf opening up between rich and poor children….”

  12. Sir Michael Palin backs calls to redesign Queen’s ‘racist’ knighthood honour showing St George crushing the devil – because it ‘looks like George Floyd’s murder’ as Jamaica’s governor refuses to wear it and 16,000 sign petition (dailymail, Jul 1, 2020)
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8478341/Michael-Palin-backs-calls-redesign-Order-St-Michael-St-George-medal-petition.html

“Monty Python star Sir Michael Palin has joined calls to redesign one of the Queen’s honours after a petition was launched claiming the insignia is ‘racist’ and ‘looks similar to George Floyd’s killing’.

The honour for the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George – one of the Queen’s highest honours – previously featured a picture of a white angel standing on the neck of a black man.

The image, which was changed in 2011 to feature a light-skinned devil, is actually a depiction of the Archangel Michael defeating Satan.

But a petition claims the image bears a resemblance to the death of George Floyd, who died in May after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for almost eight minutes as he was being arrested.

Sir Michael, who was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of St George and St Michael in 2019 for ‘services to travel, culture and geography’, has now backed calls to change the design, while the Governor General of Jamaica Sir Patrick Allen, has said he will no longer wear the insignia and called for it to be redesigned, reports the Telegraph.

The Cabinet Office says the premise of the petition is ‘inaccurate’ as the picture was redesigned nine years ago and now features a light-skinned devil.

And although Sir Michael said his medal features the updated drawing, the comedian and television presenter has backed calls for a redesign after seeing other examples.

He told the Telegraph: ‘Though the image on my award is of a white Satan being vanquished, I think that depicted is inappropriate and offensive and I would back the Governor-General of Jamaica’s call for it to be re-designed.’

On the decision to not wear the honour, a spokesperson for the Governor-General of Jamaica told the Telegraph: ‘This follows concerns raised by citizens over the image on the medal, and the growing global rejection of the use of objects that normalise the continued degradation of people of colour.’

Sir Patrick received the award in 2009, meaning his honour would feature the old design…”

  13. Iran war threat: Tehran’s new deadly missile places Europe in range (express, Jul 1, 2020)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1303317/iran-war-news-missile-world-war-3-donald-trump-noor-satellite-qased

“IRAN has developed a new missile which puts large parts of Europe within range in a dramatic wake-up call for NATO, an expert has suggested.

Officially, Tehran says the maximum range of its ballistic missiles is limited to just over 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometres), enough to reach Israel and Saudi Arabia. However, writing for the Breaking Defence website, analyst Ralph Savelsberg suggests the Islamic republic has the capability to hit targets in Italy and even Germany using a previously unknown Satellite Launch Vehicle known as the Qased.

The new hardware was used by Iran to launch its Noor satellite in April in a move which surprised the international community.

Mr Savelsberg, an associate professor at the Netherlands Defence Academy, who specialises in missile defence, subsequently undertook a detailed analysis of the Qaseb, based on open sources and using computer simulations to calculate trajectories.

He found similarities to the Shahab-3 ballistic missile, which has a range of just over 700 miles, as well as the Safir SLV, as well as a number of unusual facilities.

Consequently, with certain modifications, Iran would be able to use it as weapon, Mr Savelsberg said.

He added: “With the heavier payload, much of Central and Eastern Europe is in range.

“With the smaller payload, the range is extended to include locations further to the west, including much of Germany and Italy, as well as parts of Northern Europe.

“While it is by no means certain that the Qased is indeed intended as step towards a ballistic missile with a longer range than Iran’s current arsenal, these results show that it could be.”

Mr Savelsberg’s analysis comes against a background of increasing tension between Tehran and the west, especially the United States, with Donald Trump having ordered the assassination of military commander Qassem Soleimani at the start of the year.

Iran responded by launching rocket attacks on Iraqi military bases where US soldiers were based – a move which Mr Savelsberg said had demonstrated Tehran had “made great leaps in improving the accuracy of its ballistic missiles”.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today urged the UN Security Council to extend an arms embargo on Iran before it expires in October, prompting Russia to slam Washington’s policy towards Tehran as like “putting a knee” to the country’s neck.

The United States has circulated a draft resolution to the 15-member council which would indefinitely extend the arms embargo on Tehran.

However, Russia and China, which both have the power to veto such a move, have already signalled their opposition.

Mr Pompeo told a virtual Security Council meeting: “Don’t just take it from the United States, listen to countries in the region.

“From Israel to the Gulf, countries in the Middle East who are most exposed to Iran’s predations are speaking with one voice: Extend the arms embargo.”

US President Donald Trump’s administration has long argued the arms embargo on Iran should not be lifted.

The arms embargo is set to end in mid-October in accordance with the Joint Plan of Comprehensive Action (JPOCA) nuclear deal signed in 2015 with Britain, Germany, France, China, Russia and the administration of Mr Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama.

Since Mr Trump took office in 2017, his administration has quit the JPCOA and ramped up sanctions on Iran.

Washington has described the approach as one of “maximum-pressure”.”

  14. China has ‘VIOLATED’ Hong Kong! Boris urges 3 million citizens to head to Britain (express, Jul 1, 2020)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1303601/China-news-Hong-Kong-anti-protest-law-boris-Johnson-UK-visa

“CHINA has VIOLATED Hong Kong with its new security law according to Boris Johnson who attacked Beijing during Prime Minister’s Questions.

Boris Johnson attacked the new law passed by Chinese officials that may threaten the freedoms granted Hong Kong citizens. During Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Johnson lashed out at China’s Government and insisted the citizens had been violated. Mr Johnson was asked by Tory MP James Sunderland what message the UK Government had for the people of Hong Kong

Mr Johnson replied: “We stand for rules and obligations and we think that is the soundest basis for our international relations and the enactment and imposition of this national security law constitutes a clear and serious breach of the Sino-British joint declaration.

“It violates Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy and is in direct conflict with Hong Kong basic law.

“The law also threatens the freedoms and rights protected by the Joint Declaration.

“We made clear that if China continued down this path we would introduce a new route for those with British national overseas status to enter the UK granting them limited leave to remain with the ability to live and work in the UK and thereafter to apply for citizenship and that is precisely what we will do now.”

China passed the law unanimously in China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee on Tuesday morning.

It has since come into force and proved controversial due to the implications of the law.

The legislation has made it a criminal act to challenge Beijing’s authority and arrests have already been, citing this new law.

After flying a Hong Kong independence flag a man and woman have both been arrested.

In addition to the questions surrounding the freedom of citizens, critics have claimed this new law may threaten the economic power and international standing of Hong Kong.

Former Governor of Hong Kong, Lord Chris Patten questioned whether Chinese President Xi Jinping cares at all about the ramifications of the new law.

Lord Pattern told Channel 4 News: “This really does pose a real threat to Hong Kong’s freedom and status as a great international financial hub.

“I don’t think Xi Jinping gives a damn.””

“A GIRL aged four has died and a woman is in a life-threatening condition following an incident in Mitcham, south London.

Police were called to an address on Monarch Parade in Mitcham at 4pm, Tuesday afternoon, with reports that two people were injured. The young girl and a woman, 35, were found inside and taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.

The girl died shortly afterwards. Police say that her family have been informed.

The Met said: “The woman, aged 35, has been taken to hospital where her injuries are deemed life-threatening.”

Further details into the incident are not yet known, but police have said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with it at this early stage.

No arrests have yet been made, and police enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

In a statement, the Met said: “A post-mortem examination will take place in due course. Officers remain in the area and a crime scene is in place.”

Photos posted to Twitter show a number of police cars and vans parked outside of properties, while others appear to show an air ambulance taking off from the area.

Gerry Campbell, Former Scotland Yard Detective Chief Superintendent, called the incident “dreadful news”.

Meanwhile, following a separate case last week that is not linked, detectives are still appealing for information after a man was shot in Mitcham on June 21…”

  22. Pope Francis: Media Should Help People ‘Distinguish Good from Evil’ (breitbart, Jul 1, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/the-media/2020/07/01/pope-francis-media-should-help-people-distinguish-good-from-evil/

“Pope Francis told members of the Catholic Press Association Tuesday that the media should build bridges, defend life, and help people, especially the young, “to distinguish good from evil.”

In their reporting, journalists should help people “to develop sound judgments based on a clear and unbiased presentation of the facts, and to understand the importance of working for justice, social concord and respect for our common home,” the pope told them.

The pope sent his message to participants in a virtual Catholic media conference sponsored by the Catholic Press Association and began by expressing his closeness “to those who have been affected by the virus and to those who, even at the risk of their lives, have worked and continue to work in assisting our brothers and sisters in need.”

The experience of the pandemic “has shown how essential is the mission of the communications media for bringing people together, shortening distances, providing necessary information, and opening minds and hearts to truth,” Francis said.

The communications media are called “to inform and to unite,” the pontiff said. “E pluribus unum – the ideal of unity amid diversity, reflected in the motto of the United States, must also inspire the service you offer to the common good.”

“How urgently is this needed today, in an age marked by conflicts and polarization from which the Catholic community itself is not immune,” he continued. “We need media capable of building bridges, defending life and breaking down the walls, visible and invisible, that prevent sincere dialogue and truthful communication between individuals and communities.”

“We need media that can help people, especially the young, to distinguish good from evil, to develop sound judgments based on a clear and unbiased presentation of the facts, and to understand the importance of working for justice, social concord and respect for our common home,” he said.

The pope also said that journalists should be men and women of conviction who “protect communication from all that would distort it or bend it to other purposes.”

Communication is not only a matter of professional competence, he said. “A true communicator dedicates himself or herself completely to the welfare of the others, at every level, from the life of each individual to the life of the entire human family.”

With a nod to recent protests in the United States, the pope said everyone must work “to overcome the diseases of racism, injustice and indifference that disfigure the face of our common family.”

“Where the world sees conflicts and divisions, may you look to the suffering and the poor, and give voice to the plea of our brothers and sisters in need of mercy and understanding,” he said.

The pope ended his message by assuring Catholic journalists of his support and prayers, while urging them to remain “united in faith and resistant to fleeting cultural fads that lack the fragrance of evangelical truth.””

  25. France freezes role in NATO Libya force amid Turkey tensions (abcnews, Jul 1, 2020)

“France is suspending its involvement in a NATO naval operation off Libya’s coast after a standoff with a Turkish ship and amid growing tensions within the military alliance over Libya.

France’s Defense Ministry said Wednesday that France sent a letter Tuesday to NATO saying it is suspending its participation in Sea Guardian “temporarily.”

A ministry official said France wants NATO allies to “solemnly reaffirm their attachment” to the arms embargo on Libya.

France has accused Turkey of repeated violations of the U.N. arms embargo on conflict-torn Libya and branded the Turkish government in Ankara as an obstacle to securing a cease-fire in the North African nation, which Turkey firmly denies.

France is also calling for crisis mechanism to prevent a repeat of an incident earlier this month between Turkish warships and a French naval vessel in the Mediterranean. NATO is investigating what happened.

France says its frigate Courbet was “lit up” three times by Turkish naval targeting radar when it tried to approach a Turkish civilian ship suspected of involvement in arms trafficking. The ship was being escorted by three Turkish warships. The Courbet backed off after being targeted.

The French frigate was part of Sea Guardian, NATO’s naval operation in the Mediterranean, at the time of the June 10 incident. France claims that under the alliance’s rules of engagement such conduct is considered a hostile act.

Turkey has denied harassing the Courbet. Turkey’s ambassador to France was questioned in the French Senate on Wednesday and defended Turkey’s actions as peaceful and crucial to restoring stability to Libya.

Libya has been in turmoil since 2011, when a NATO-backed uprising toppled leader Moammar Gadhafi, who was later killed. The country has since been split between rival administrations in the east and the west, each backed by armed groups and different foreign governments.”

  26. Turkey: Up to 60 migrants feared dead in lake after sinking (abcnews, Jul 1, 2020)

“Up to 60 migrants may have been trapped in a boat that sank in an eastern lake last week, Turkey’s interior minister said Wednesday.

Turkey launched a search-and-rescue mission involving helicopters and boats after the boat carrying migrants across Lake Van was reported missing on June 27. So far, search teams have recovered six bodies.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, who traveled to Van to oversee the rescue operation, told reporters Wednesday that authorities estimated the boat was carrying between 55 and 60 migrants when it went down in stormy weather.

Eleven other people were detained in connection with the tragedy, he said. A village administrator has been removed from office for delaying reporting the incident, he added.

Soylu said experts think the sunken boat is under 110-120 meters (360-394 feet) of water. An underwater imaging system was dispatched from Ankara to locate the wreck, he added.

HaberTurk television said the migrants are believed to be from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran…”

  35. Worst virus fears are realized in poor or war-torn countries
For months, experts have warned of nightmare scenarios in which the coronavirus gains a foothold in poor or war-torn countries

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — For months, experts have warned of a potential nightmare scenario: After overwhelming health systems in some of the world’s wealthiest regions, the coronavirus gains a foothold in poor or war-torn countries ill-equipped to contain it and sweeps through the population.

Now some of those fears are being realized.

In southern Yemen, health workers are leaving their posts en masse because of a lack of protective equipment, and some hospitals are turning away patients struggling to breathe. In Sudan’s war-ravaged Darfur region, where there is little testing, a mysterious illness resembling COVID-19 is spreading through camps for the internally displaced.

Cases are soaring in India and Pakistan, together home to more than 1.5 billion people and where authorities say nationwide lockdowns are no longer an option because of high poverty.
